We thought brisbane have only least asian food(especially indonesian) but lucky us whilst looking for laundromat, we found this restaurant few houses from laundry and were SO EXCITING! the food was exactly like food in indonesia, Great dessert we had - shaved iced durian drink. Good to know for you guys that when we came theres only one staff working at the floor so just saying it might not be quick, but if you not in a rush will be a great experience of having indonesian food! 👍
I haven't been to Indo but I imagine that if I went there, these are the types of dishes I would get. Succulent spicy chicken wings, banging satay chicken, Tasty tempeh, nasi goreng and mi goreng to tantalise the taste buds! Makanan? Take your nan! And all your friends! Now! Go!
We popped in to the restaurant last night and ordered deep fried fish (dine in) and oxtail soup (take away). I’m surprised that the food taste the same as in Indonesia and the staff were very friendly. This is the best Indonesian restaurant I’ve been so far in Brisbane. We will be back for sure 🙌🏻
I am an Indonesian but I had never eaten Indonesian food in restaurant in Brisbane until I went to this restaurant. My friend and I ordered ayam balado and nasi goreng ikan asin. Ayam balado was delicious. It was fried until it had crunchy texture. However the balado sauce was not as spicy as we imagined (we quite understood since they should adjust their level of spiciness). Nasi goreng ikan asin was also awesome. It was very similar to the one we had in Indonesia. The lady was also nice. We had talks. Even she gave us student discount. Yayyyy.. will come back here for sure. Ahh and the price of the food is not that expensive compared to the other restaurant. Awesome!!
Loved this place! I had a veggie laksa, boyf had mie goreng and we shared some veggie fritters. It was all so yummy I'll definitely be back and probably order the same thing :p
Staff were also really nice and it was lovely to sit outside with the evening breeze. A+
This place is understated and underrated. It exists in a busy row of popular restaurants, and comparatively it's the least fancy and decorated, but for my money, it offers one of the most unique experiences on Hardgrave.
It you're like me, you may have walked past dismissively on sight many times, but give it a go, I reckon you'll be surprised!
The staff are always super friendly, and I was recognised and treated like a regular after only a couple of visits.
The meals too appear slightly understated, but they're delicious. I can't go past the set meals; they're huge!
One of the best restaurants on Hargrave Rd, a secret gem! The set menus are absolutely the way to go. The vegetarian/vegan one is delicious and HUGE. DO NOT miss their marinated tempeh... mind blowing. And the live keyboard music on the weekends is pretty spesh :)

This is a lovely restaurant. Super friendly service from the family who run the place. The menu has heaps of Indonesian classics on there like gado gado, nasi goreng, several tempeh dishes and plenty of satay options. It's also a strong dinner option for vegetarians and vegans. Prices are fair and the decor is unpretentious.
It's in a strip, jammed in between some more popular restaurants, but if you're heading into West End to dine, please don't overlook it for the better patronised Trang's or Little Red Dumpling. Makanan is a surprise packet. I especially recommend Saturday evening when there's a guy there doing karaoke with a keyboard and a songbook of classic pop. Even though he looks super casual, I heard him doing a Roy Orbison tune the other week and he NAILED every note. Respect.
I came here with a friend on a warm summer night. Two staff members came out immediately with an ice bucket for our drinks and bought us menus. Our waitress was really sweet and our orders were taken promptly. I got the gado-gado which I really enjoyed. The flavours of the sauce were balanced really nicely, although there was a little bit too much of it but the serving was generous considering the meal only cost $12. The restaurant inside was a little old and unappealing but they've recently renovated so I'm hoping to make it back here and dine here again soon.
Enak bangetz! Great home style Indonesian cuisine with competitive West End prices. Delicious authentic flavours and great tofu. However, beware the chili tempe - it is for hard core chili fanboys only! Friendly staff and great service. A great place to bring a date or a group of friends. It is byo - which is fine because there is a bottle shop a few doors down. A must try.
Pretty damn good. Large servings, reasonably price. My favourite was the sweet, sour and spicy fish. Next fav was gado gado veges. Can't go past chicken satay or steamed chicken dim sum. Casual dining but I will return (so many more dishes to explore)....mmmmmmmm
keep coming back for the laksa. OMG LAKSA. the coconutty cury flavour laksa soup, a thick creamy one which i really love. and for traditional version of laksa, you got two kinds of noodles in the bowl, being egg noodles n thin rice vermicille, which you can have it here. but of course you can choose one kind of noodle for your style. the owner here is really cool, try to talk to him to know more about his store. =)
A wonderful experience. Everything about this restaurant is cool. The food is super yum, the owner is a darling, the decor is quirky and there is even a little poster with some Indonesian sayings. We should all support this little gem!
Great place to experience Indonesian cuisine. Enak!! This little restaurant offers an extensive menu with all the authentic Indonesian flavours I fell in love with on my trip. The service was top notch, as well as the fact it's BYO and there is live music on Saturday nights. Definitely a new Hardgrave Road favorite. Mmmmmm Yum!
Thanks for the lovely meal/night
Great food in great location. My partner's relatives never tried Indonesian food before, so I took them here. Needless to say, they were very impressed! The chicken satay and peanut sauce are simply delicious, so with the beef rendang and the stir fry kangkoong. You can ask the food to be as spicy as you want it to be. Will definitely return on our next visit to Brisbane.
Makanan Indonesia. Had a really nice lunch there yesterday.Great Service,Friendly Staff,Very tasty meals well presented and family friendly
looking forward to going again
The food was really good. Make sure you ask them to make it spicy if you want it, otherwise they'll make it mild. Mains were $12-17. You have to order rice separately.
Amazing menu amazing food
Great prices
Staff are amazing
It feels like I'm back in Indonesia when ever I come here .
Birthday dinner. We had a fantastic evening at Makanan. We ordered six dishes and all were good. The yellow chicken curry was the pick. The manager is very friendly and generally a great bloke. We really enjoyed the live music on Saturday night. They even gave us cake for my son't birthday and sang happy birthday. Corny but lots of fun.
One of our favs. Cheap, yummy and always good for a surprise! One of our fav restaurants in Brisbane. Friendly staff (take your kids for some magic tricks)
I love this place. Great food, great prices, great atmosphere, great staff and great music on the nights with the dude on keyboard!
Quick friendly service, delicious cheap food. What can I say, fantastic food, huge potions for really cheap.
All the staff are friendly and the food comes out quick, even on the weekends.
Great food, terrific service, funny night. We went there with the family and grandparents. After ordering some quite nice entrees, we ended up ordering 4 mains for the 6 of us with rice (loads of rice) which were delicious. The best part though was the service, a family run business where the old man was telling some cracker jokes!! Great food, great service, great time. We'll definitely go back!!
Love this place. Laksa is where its at here. The food is great, good value, the decor is so indo; totally authentic, the mangers and staff are lovely. And the keyboard player is great wkd entertainment if youre lucky to catch him. And its BYO, theres a bottle shop just next door.
Tip - dont go there with 20 people and expect them not to cock up your order - the kitchen is small. Either be aware of this or go there in a small group instead.
Surprising. The funky atomosphere with the keyboard guy in the corner is all a part of this experience. Excellent food. Loved every single thing we ordered. Good value.
Really enjoyed it! Well worth it. Had a great time with my husband. He ordered the fried chili chicken - cooked hot. Wow. Amazing! I ordered the satay and gado gado and durian smoothie. Loved the food. Decent prices - full 3 course meals for two cost around $55.00. The atmosphere was pretty funny - not so keen on the keyboard music but it really reminded me of being in South East Asia. But the staff were super friendly and helpful. It really added to the experience. I will definitely be going back.
We have been coming to Makanan for about 3 and a half years now.. We absolutely love it. It's sad to see the negative comments, because we truly have enjoyed every aspect of this restaurant. Beautiful food, family friendly, well priced and comfortable and friendly atmosphere. We will deffinately be back again and again.
Very friendly and cater for all foodies, totally surprising with the services and food! Batagor is my favourite! Dinner for two for less then $20 where can you this day!
International standard Asian food. Excellent consistently high standard - easily my fave in Brisbane. Assam fish is a highlight. Brought the fussy in laws from Singapore and they loved it - couldn't wait to come back. People are always lovely as well. Overall great dining experience.
We eat here about once a week and it's consistently superb. Fresh food, quick and cheap too. No need to visit Indo when you have this.
My lips tingled!. I tried this place today simply because Trang's was full. I'm now glad it was because my vegetarian laksa was fantastic. My order was taken as soon as I put down the menu. I was a bit vague with the waiter about how hot I wanted it. After the first mouthful I thought it was quite mild. Then, suddenly the heat hit me and my nose started running. Fantastic! Very basic decor which made it seem even more authentic and at $11.50 for a massive bowl it was good value for money. The service was very attentive and friendly. Seeing that I was on my own the waiter (or maybe owner) offered me a newspaper. Overall, great service, food and prices in a casual atmosphere. I'd recommend it.
Money. Try the ikan kari (fish curry) it's amazing
satay is really good as well
I like the rendang too
great food
Good food - laksa is so good, ayam goreng mentega is yum, bakso is nice, cumi-cumi pedas is not for the faint hearted but still good!! Staffs are friendly - highly recommended
Really YUMMY. Really enjoyed the food here. Very tasty and authentic. The live music was really good as well. Will definitely be back again soon.
Bambang. I love music. I have great pleasure to sing and play intrument. I have dicovered others enjoy it too, when I play at Makanan Indonesia Restaurant.
Of course there're many genre of music, and particular person may not like my style/genre. I am not begging a symphaty, if you don't find my music please you, please move on.
I'm trying my best to share my talent with you, so you would enjoy the experience dining in and enjoy the authentic Indonesian dishes.
This place is the beez neez, best restaurant in Oz!. Well,
For beginners the entertainment couldn't be better, you will enjoy the beats from the Indonesian keyboardist as well as his singing, it's unbelievable! Especially when he closes with Star Wars. He's there on weekends but is getting big these days so have to verify he's there.
The service is great, the owners and staff are more than accommodating for size and attitude of it's customers. It's nice that it's off the main drag and in hippie ville as all the boners are not coming here from the Valley.
And the food is unbelievable, the Nasi Goreng is a go to for me. The portions are ridiculously large as well.
Thanks for all the great meals guys!
Indonesian in Brissie.. yay!. Arguably yummier than Java in Sydney, but it's still fantastic with a friendly atmosphere and a great menu! Glad to know there's a hangout Indo restaurant that I can pig at in Brissie!
Cheap Tastyness. Get the spicy fish curry and the Nasi Goreng Kampur. Soo good
Good food at a reasonable price. The satays are fantastic and the curry is very good as well. I was a little surprised at the cost but overall value for money.
Atmosphere is a bit kitchy but very friendly and inviting. There was an AWESOME keyboardist playing all the hits from the 80s and 90s! The food was extremely delicious & excellent value for money. Were able to accommodate our large group (8) and very kid-friendly. Will go again.
Seriously the best most authentic Javanese food in Brissy. Their sambal has the right flavours & intensity. Finally!
Best nasi goreng we've ever had. Soup was also divine. Service was swift and friendly. Excellent value. We will be back.
There were bits of tofu, chicken, bean sprouts, slippery egg and rice noodles throughout the dish, although it did say vermicilli but I think these noodles were too thick to be considered that.
Our food at Makanan Indonesia was hit and miss. Overall it wasn't bad for simple, SE-Asian style street fare. The prices were fairly reasonable for the amount of food you get. The place isn't flash and fancy but it's BYO so I think it's nice for hanging out with friends at night.
Amazing food that hits the spot for those who have been to Indonesia and searching for that local flavour. Best to ring up and order before hand and specify how spicy you like the dish to be.
Very tasty food. The Rendang is probably the best I have had in a restaurant. Dishes could have had some more spice.
Newly renovated, new Management, and now new menu. The most authentic Indonesian Restaurant in Brisbane and Queensland.
I rarely like to venture outside of my known restaurants but I am so happy I walked into this restaurant. I can honestly say that this is my new favorite place to eat! If your a chilli lover then you will LOVE the spice here! Just thinking of the food makes my mouth water. Not only is the food amazing but the family who own and run Makanan Indonesia are super friendly and attentive. I love supporting small family businesses who take pride in their work. Great place to eat!
First time visit. Love the pempek. Delicious sauce, tastes authentic. Balinese fried chicken was yummy too! Batagor could have been improved. Friendly staff. The only downside was there was a window cleaner doing cleaning at lunch time and he was so loud. Thanks for cleaning!
A must try for lovers of Asian food, Indonesian cuisine and a legit experience.
The owner sports a Hawaiian shirt that matches the no-frills attitude of the place.
Food is great value and always tastes good, though as an Indian I prefer slightly spicier food
Surrounded by bigger, more popular restaurants, this place is a real find.

Although one or two of the wait staff were a bit slack, it was great to be able to converse in Indonesian with the owner. My non-spicy food loving family were overwhelmed by the atmosphere and the new palate of flavours. My family were all pleasantly surprised to find how good the food tasted and that not all Indonesian food need be spicy. We'll definitely be returning
Good authentic food and experience. Consistency can be an issue some times, but that's normal with Asian cuisine. Disappointed they're not open for lunch from Monday to Thursday. Brisbane needs more like these, hidden gem.
