Good and tasty food. Ok service. Value for money.
It's an Asian food place so don't be surprised with plenty of fried food options (as I was) :-)
Generous servings in a nice relaxed atmosphere. Food quality of the Nasi Goreng was superb. Very attentive staff helping enjoy our dining experience
I love Chow House! Was tossing up where to go for breakfast on my birthday so headed into James St for a look around. Thought I would visit after forgetting about this gem for 2 years. After looking over the extensive breakfast menu I could not go past bacon, poached eggs, waffles and hollandaise sauce. 4 of my favourite things in one dish, best birthday present ever. The bacon eggs Benedict waffle came out looking perfect. Couldn’t fault this place! Perfect start to my day.
After our meaty meal at Ribs n Rumps we came over here for coffee and dessert. Wait staff are friendly and the Barista has time for a chat. I eventually decide on my dessert and we place our orders.
Coffee is served and my large double shot Cafe Latte hits the spot! Hot, strong and flavoursome, this large mug of coffee keeps me drinking for 15 minutes. Paul Chan seems happy with his single shot Cafe Latte. No complaints from him. The Carrot Cake is unusually firm and dense but I quite like this cake. Thank you Chow House!
Thoroughly enjoyed lunch at Chowhouse. When I asked if they have gluten free options they brought me a separate gluten free menu. Plenty of dishes were already gf or could be modified. I had a chicken satay skewer to start and Nasi Goreng (modified with gf soy sauce) for main. Generous portions, good vibe, friendly and fast service, reasonably priced and food was delicious. My partner had the Nasi Goreng and a tortilla (not gf) to start.
Decent choices of mains, lovely taste and nicely garnished. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff made it a lovely catchup with friends. The only thing which made me a bit disappointed was the service, My food and drink been served at least 15min later than others although we all ordered at the same time. Would definitely return though....@Jonathan McCowen
Came in for breakfast with a group. I ordered the porridge which was delicious and I would definitely come back and order it again. The coffee was good too.
Had a Wednesday night dinner for my husband's birthday joined by our 4 adult sons and a partner. Food was nicely presented flavoursome and the servings were hearty which went down well with hungry men on a cold night. Staff were attentive and obliging and the street ambience was warm and welcoming. The only think that I would improve on was some heating but then it was one of Brisbane's first real winter nights.
Looking for a great breakfasr with an asian twist this is the place to be. Enjoyed every bite and husband wants to go back for dinner asap. Delish!
Had the salmon on potato cake which was delicious. My friend had the avocado on toast which had the most generous serving of avocado I honestly have ever seen. Seemed to be more than a whole avocado on the plate. Great service and meals were delivered quickly. Definitely will be back.
Sweet spot:
Good food and delicious smoothies and juices. I particularly enjoyed the Metaboliser. Nice kick with the chillies in it.
I was very excited to see pierogis on the menu. It was delicious but i still prefer the regular white flour and plain sour cream for the perogis.
The nasi goreang and the roast pork belly with green tea noodles were nice. I think the green tea noodles could do with a little less rice wine vinaigrette.
Nevertheless, me and my friends enjoyed our meal.
The crew are great...friendly and accomodating.
The cafe is open and and spacious.
Great place, you must try the fritters. Drinks amazing, my friend said the banana smoothie was the best he has ever tasted. Breakfast burritos where massive.
Beautiful service, lovely management and owners. M & I came here for a late breakfast and enjoyed it. Was fresh, tasted good with great presentation. Modern and tasteful - I'll have to return to try their lunch menu.
Came here for a team brekkie.
Good location that I believe is prob over looked. Staff were very attentive and were great at offering options.
Good was lovely. I can't fault it. Servings were also pretty good.
Interesting menu, with prices that end up being pretty reasonable for the quality of food and ingredients we received. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, but also professional. Very stylish!
Had a lovely work breakfast here this morning. The staff were really friendly and the food was delicious. The only bad thing is that it is very open and with all the work going on across the road it gets very dusty!
This place offers really good value for money and the service is great. Their portion sizes are very generous. The duck pancakes are delicious and you get so much duck in them. They come deep fried with a beautiful sauce. Will order again. Satay chicken was nice but needed a bit more of those pickled veggies. The pork belly had a great crackle on the top, unfortunately the layer of fat wasn't rendered enough so had to cut it off. Green prawn curry was phenomenal. Will be coming back to try their breakfast menu as well.
Randomly went to Chow house today for brunch. Ordered some pancakes for my daughter they where very nice , as well as the corn fritters . Everything was delish. The service was very good . Will go back again for dinner :)
A nice little place in Fortitude Valley. The breakfast had a nice little fusion twist with a hint of wasabi in the sauce. I think I will be back to try the dinner menu
The mini pork bun xeo was good but the pork was somewhat ruined by too much salt. Chicken satay was nice but I would have preferred it served with rice instead of bread. Peeling duck pancakes were great and salt & pepper calamari was amazing! I'd come again.
Randomly walked in for dinner on a busy Saturday night. Tried the peking duck pancakes, salted fried squid, and mini pork banh xeo. All three dishes were delicious with complex flavours, particularly the pork was really yummy! I'd definitely go back.
Chow house is a great place to come with friends for dinner and cocktails. I came here with three other friends and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The duck pancakes and Pork rice pancakes were a favourite! Between the four of use we ordered 4 small bites and 2 mains which we felt was enough food. The cocktails were also delicious and it was just a really nice atmosphere eating outside on James street.
Enjoyed a lovely lunch at Chow House today with some friends. Such a great menu. We all decided on something from the street food section. The waiter happily told us that the duck pancakes were the best so a couple of us took his advice and were not disappointed. Chow House has excellent staff, a great location, a tasty menu and good price point. I know I'll be back.
Great cafe. The breakfast burger was delicious. The brioche bun was sweet, fluffy and buttery. Haloumi and bacon was nice and crispy. Would definitely return.
The best restaurant in Brisbane. Not only because the food is always impossibly divine but also because the staff are friendly and go above and beyond for their customers. We went to Chow House a few weeks ago for a Christmas lunch and were all so impressed by the way in which the staff catered to our every need, and with such a welcoming attitude no matter what the request. We have been raving about the food and service for weeks. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a beautiful place to host a luncheon as I have never dealt with such a fantastic business who really care about their customers. Oh and did I mention the food is TO DIE FOR! Thank you for a wonderful experience Chow House x
Quick efficient service. All delivered in 20 mins with entire restaurant full! Fantastic coffee and food. Wonderful vibe about the place with pleasant music. Love watching the people walk by along James street.
Food and staff were fantastic when we arrived mid morning on Sunday. Only thing is the food took about 1 hour to arrive at the table! Otherwise a very pleasant experience
Im pretty much obsessed with Chow House From the first glance of their menu I knew I would love it – healthy, wholesome options available for all tastes and appetites (especially my own). blackbean, tomato + eschallot fricassee on avocado, topped w. soft herbs + sour cream, served w. poached eggs [v]
It's an Asian twist cuisine but I didn't get to order their Asian dish. It's actually really good compare to other average restaurant. I would definitely make a return to try their Asian dish! Looks good from what other people have ordered.
If you like something different for breakfast with an Asian twist this is your place. A little hit and miss in terms of consistency & you may find pricing vs size of portion is a little on the + vs - side. The place may look packing from the street however there is inside as well! A staple along James St for a good chow!
Waking up a little later today to the most gorgeous sunshine outside, had me wanting to head somewhere a bit lively for a late brunch, so we decided James St would fit the bill. We decided to wing it and just go for a walk and see where appealed and so we ended up at ChowHouse ... pretty much because it looked nice from outside!
We were a little too late for the breakfast menu - so we will go back and try that sometime - so we chose from the lunch menu. I went with the lemongrass chicken baguette and hubby was keen for a steak sandwich - washed down with a passionfruit mule (hey it was after noon, a cocktail on a sunny Sunday just seemed right).
Firstly I have to say the fitout of the place is great - obviously very inviting - and service was prompt and friendly. The place was fairly busy with most tables taken. The mules were out in good time - we first discovered these in an amazing japanese restaurant in Bangkok called "In the Mood for Love" ... still makes us smile to think that a name like that could cause issues on credit card bills lol ... and these mules were pretty good. Fresh and juicy with plenty of passionfruit.
All the food going out around us looked and smelt amazing, so my mouth was watering by the time our meals arrived. Well wow! Hubby enjoyed his streak sandwich which came with haloumi on it, but said it could have used some sauce as he found it a little dry - he said he would have perhaps like the pickled onions that were in the side salad, on the actual burger - why he didn't just do this himself I have no idea. I also don't know why he didn't just add some sauce - he had requested some to go with the shoestring fries - who can figure men out sometimes.
My lunch was definately the pick of the day - a lovely crunchy baguette loades with salad, plump perfectly cooked chicken, peanut satay sauce and corriander. Seriously seriously good - don't forget to remove the lemongrass skewers before you dig in though. This would have to be one of the best sandwiches I've had in quite a while and perfect for a warm sunday lunch.
Very impressed with ChowHouse and no doubt we will return again - I want to give that breakfast menu a whirl.
Kat - Oats And Cheesecake
+4
After discovering this gem during the Marie Claire Up Late event this year, it's safe to say we've been making up for lost time! I've visited more times than I can remember and the food has been outstanding every time, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A clear stand out for me though has been the duck pancake. Good grief, it's incredible!
Delish food that you can share. The chicken satay skewers were amazing. I'd give it a five but staff need to pop a smile on their faces.
Wasn't overly impressed.. The coffee was great but wasn't a fan of the food. We weren't there at a particularly busy time, but ordered a second round of coffee that never came yet we were charged for it. Food took forever to get to us and when it did, it was the wrong order. I'm sure they were just having an off day as the friend who I was with had been before and loved it.
Yes. Super impressed, my tastebuds were very satisfied, every bite was dancing on the tongue, will definitely be back
Casual, friendly dining experience. Food was fresh, flavoursome and very affordable. 8/10
Amazing breakfast and coffee
Highly recommend! The Yellow lamb curry is delicious, the service really good and the atmosphere is lovely. I will be back
Visited twice over the Easter weekend, once for breakfast and then again for lunch. Both occasions were fantastic - food and service.
Breakfast - I ordered the authentic Thai chicken omlette while my partner ordered the more traditional eggs Benedict. We were both very pleased and my omlette was extremely flavoursome. We also shared the coconut crumpets with (insane!!) lemon curd which were so delicious we had to order another serve - although they had switched to the lunch menu by then but the wait staff and kitchen were more than happy to accommodate our request. All the boys on the floor this day were really lovely and attentive. The coffees were great too.
Lunch - went with the family for Easter lunch and everyone loved their meals ranging from the poached chicken salad, rice paper rolls, duck pancake, chicken baguette and more. We also had a great male waiter who helped me custom make a few of their delicious cocktails to suit my dietary requirements - they were so good!!! We were so happy that we stayed for dessert and again we were not disappointed. The chocolate crepe and affogatto were really yummy.
We look forward to our next visit as there is so much to explore on the menu. Thanks for a memorable Easter Chow House.
I've had two great breakfasts here now. Coconut yogurt was great with the black beans.
Some of the best breakfasts on the planet. Perfect steak. Perfect bacon. Perfect poached eggs. Wait was short. Flavours awesome. Staff friendly.
Phenomenal. Delicious, fresh food + amazing service + easy-to-find location + great prices = A phenomenal dining experience!!
Good. Keep going guys well done something different for a change is all good.
Thanks for a lovely night.
Great Gluten-Free Breakkie Choices. Chowhouse has a good range of GF breakfast choices and moreover, the waitstaff appreciate GF requirements and were very helpful in suggesting other dishes with ingredients changed out to make GF. Staff for mid week Breakkie service were helpful and cheerful. Food fresh with many choices and interesting combinations. Just loved my mushroom dish. Coffee that day was awesome, just had to have three! I will be back for lunch!
ChowHouse - Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. Not many places put the emphasis so much on casual dining, even when they are very much so. With this idea in mind, ChowHouse allows itself to not only work but be high-quality in its aim. It is one of the most stylishly casual places that I can remember being to. The service here is well-organised and lovely, they have a massive amount of space for dining. From a simple glance, it is an inference that they use a tablet to plan out seating arrangements; if it was a tablet, it was not needed at that time due to the less hectic workload at the time.
After a rush to Brisbane from the northern coast, I met my old friend in the city to head off elsewhere for some brunch. Heading for Fortitude Valley, the two of us were walking about the main road in search of somewhere to go. With most places invariably not open, this place was - and busy as a result - thus thinking "good enough" this was chosen. The meal here was pretty darn good, as was the coffee.
One of the benefits of location, is the adjacent view towards the cinema. It is certainly in the happening hub, where a good night out can be done with safety (i.e. dinner and a movie). Also, if anyone needs to go ....... fill in the blank. Some great urban planning went into this area of the city in recent times.
It was around brunch time, which meant the breakfast menu was the current one to order from. With a keen eye and wanting to expand tastes as far as possible, I looked at the specialties menu. Two items there were taking my fancy and it came down to a coin-flip to decide. The Breakfast Burrito won. Inside was slow-cooked braised beef, which was delicious and tender. It had been infused in its own juices for quite sometime and made for a fantastic filling all wrapped in a house-made flour tortilla. For a while I thought it was more of a chimichanga. On top there was a tomato salsa and some avocado, both freshly made and healthy. Odd, but they serve a poached egg on the side and I ordered a potato rosti to go with. The potato rostis were finger shaped and really crispy, almost to the extent that they probably were made to be finger food. As usual, with a runny yolk the poached egg was really delicious and the tortilla did a good job mopping up the yolk. It was a substantial breakfast.
I got the usual double cappuccino to drink. They make quite nice coffee here. It had a moderate strength to it and a pleasant flavour without any bitterness. The cappuccino was done in the traditional manner without any chocolate powder on top.
How this place has been arranged shows astute planning. It is central in location, there is the laid-back vibe of dining and they do not compromise for quality in food and service. Giving the best of both worlds, you have the familiar variety for diners and those who like a bit of something different are also covered. The post-breakfast menu definitely looks worth trying out. This place is totally worth trying out, movie or no movie.
Pretty good.. After reading the reviews on here I wasn't expecting much when my wife asked me to take her to chowhouse for a Thursday morning breakfast but I was pleasantly surprised on the friendly and efficient staff.
I enjoyed my duck omelet and my wife was impressed with her eggs benedict, but I would have to agree with some of the reviews on here about the lack of salmon and spinach on the eggs benedict. Overall I would definitely recommend chowhouse and I will return.
Yum. Went for lunch last week. The lemongrass chicken skewers with peanut sauce were large, tender and tasty. Paw paw salad fresh and light. Salt and pepper calamari tasty and tender. Peking duck pancake delicious. We chose all the "street foods" and shared. We also had the spring rolls that were generous in size and delicious. Along with a bottle of white and sparkling mineral water, cost was $110 which was excellent. We were completely full. Service was good and friendly. We did sit towards the back, opposite the kitchen which was great to see the meals coming out but it did start to warm up mid afternoon. Good value. This is the second time I have been here. We will be back.
Wow!. After reading the Courier Mail review last weekend, we decided to try the ChowHouse for ourselves...and so glad we did! Food, service, and overall ambiance was amazing. Our table of 6 were all brought our dishes promptly, and no one left unsatisfied. Fully recommend the Pork Belly as it was out of this world. Starters included a mixed selection of dumplings, duck pancakes and chicken satay skewers, and again, all delicious.
We will definitely be back :-)
3.75 stars - restaurant has great atmosphere and friendly staff. Some dishes were a hit and miss. Prices are reasonable for some too. We tried the:
》pecking duck & shallot pancake - substantial size, very salty tho
》Honey sriracha pork belly - my favourite dish! The meat was nice and soft and the skin was super crunchy. Amazing flavours
》 Sticky glazed beef short rib - also another favourite. Meat fell off the bone easily, had good smokey flavours
》Teriyaki Salmon - fish was cooked well however the sauce was average. The mixture with orange was strange
》 Chicken, green mango & lychee salad - interesting fusion. Very refreshing however chicken is quite bland
》 Pork bao - also another interesting fusion. Bit dry and the combinations of flavours didn't work very well together
I like the atmosphere and the the decor. It felt cozy and relaxing. The coffee was quite good and it has your main breakfast staples on the menu, haven't seen lunch or dinner menu. The breakfast beef burrito was pretty good, didn't let me down. Overall good place, solid but not a standout. Would I return? Yes, but not go out of my way.
Price: ★★★★☆ (reasonable)
Portion: ★★★★☆ (quite large and generous)
Taste: ★★★☆☆ (the dishes are hits and misses. My Nasi Goreng was very tasty but coconut chicken salad was only ok)
Ambiance: ★★★☆☆ (modern Australian and seat are spacious)
Service: ★★★★☆ (friendly and fast)
Hit and miss here but I love how experimental the menu is! I had some very disappointing ricotta French toast here one time so have stuck to savoury ever since. I absolutely love one particular dish - smoked salmon on hash potato cake with avocado, poached egg and horse radish creme fraiche! I get it every time now and it is the perfect indulgent breakfast for weekends!
During a brief visit to Brisbane over the weekend a friend who lives in Fortitude Valley recommended this restaurant. Three of us ordered the ‘special’ for the evening, ‘snapper fillet on a taro rösti’. The fish was perfectly cooked and the taro rösti crisp and delicious. The broccoli and sauce were a perfect accompaniment. The Pork Belly (smelt and looked divine) and chicken satay ordered by others were apparently very good as well. An easy 5 star for the food this evening. We found the seating awkward - 2 round tables together in the central inside area where we moved to after changing from an outdoor table in a high traffic area. The service and setting just ok so overall 4 stars from me. I’d like to go back just to try the pork belly!
