Review Malaysia Makanan - Brisbane

ASHERN RAMBALEE
The restaurant is well located with ample parking. There are adequate tables and seating for dine in guests. You can dine inside the restaurant or the out door deck. The meals are well priced and the portions are large. There was a taste of uncooked or under cooked spices for the 2 dishes I had however the dish was tender and well plated. The staff although friendly and helpful seemed to lack in being able to attend to guests and take orders unless called upon. Additional plates and drinks out the fridge are selfserved which is not indicated when placing your order. All in all, apart from the minor shortfalls mentioned above, it was a good experience. Good enough for 3stars

Authentic Malaysian food. Our favourites are the Roti Canai with Rendang or Chicken Curry and the Hainan Chicken Rice. Fast service and reasonable prices.

Arrived at 2pm after driving a distance to get here for take away. The lady at the front rudely hand signals to say they are closed despite it saying they close at 2:30pm on Google Maps. She directed me to the door, in hindsight she literally threw me out. Used to be a regular at this place years ago before moving interstate, they used to have outstanding customer service.

Very average chicken curry. Chicken in curry sauce mostly dry chicken. No potatoes or carrot or any veg. Just plain chicken very oily sauce. Rice is extra. Small bowl dry rice not steaming fresh as should be. Super expensive $21 for lunch. Not worth it. This place has disappointed me at least 3 times. Won't be back.

This is a very nice Malaysian place for lunch or dinner, considering there’s such a lack of good Malaysian food around the area. Food is of good quality. For the few times I’ve eaten there, I’ve almost always been able to enjoy the food. It would have been better if they had Malaysian drinks, such as Teh Tarik, on their menu. A Malaysian restaurant cannot be truly authentic without Malaysian drinks, can it. The unenthusiastic service delivered by the younger and inexperience waiters was not too satisfying, but the expectation from the receiving end was not high anyway. Overall, it is a nice Malaysian restaurant to visit when craving for authentic Malaysian food.

Dropped in for takeaway for dinner. Special Fried Rice. Chicken Skewers. Calamari Balls and Spring Rolls. Service was good, food was good but the pricing is in the upper end for this area and this food.

bad customer service by staff name Donna. Very rude 😒 i reversed a table as for inside at 7pm. she said all good over the phone. When get there there was no table reversed and she denied that i requested for table inside. Staff like this should not be working there at all. She even argued with us not offering any help. So we had to walked out of the restaurant 😐

Great place for Malaysian food. Usually can’t go wrong with their Laksa and chicken rice. Had their chicken satay - Slight tough. But overall, nice place.

This popular Malaysian restaurant offers authentic food at reasonable prices. Phuong Tran’s Roti Canai with Beef Rendang is delicious. My Hainan Chicken Rice is a generous serve and very satisfying. An enjoyable lunch!

Had take away for the whole family today, tried 5 different curries with roti & everything was spectacular. Had no complaints about the food. Every curry was flavoursome. Priced very well. Thank you

A place for HUGE portions and cheap eats. Ordered Char Khaw Tiew, Roti Canai and Laksa, and requested them to be extra hot. Wowwww the chef made us so satisfied with the chili heat! Appreciated a straight forward service but cutleries should not have been left on each table during this pandemic; better give to customers after they have placed their orders.

Revisited this Malaysian restaurant last night. Correct me if I am wrong that the management has been changed since my last review. Vibe seems more energetic than last management.<br/>Well, we played it safe to order some signature dishes for testing water.<br/>Hainan chicken and rice is good with right juicy texture of boneless chicken and subtle fragrance from the rice (4.5/5), Ha Mee is good in terms of authentic broth and large king prawns (4.5/5). Kang Kong is a let down which lacks strong flavour of sauce but the spiciness is spot on.<br/>Overall, production keeps its consistency.<br/>Previous visits: Aug 2018 4.5/5; Sep 2015 4/5

We were big fans of them previous then change in ownership caused their food quality to drop. But they've definitely improved on the previous mishap and they're back in a big way.<br/><br/>I'll definitely return to give the old favourites another try.

The Cantonese ho fun here is always yummy, but the hainanese chicken here wasn’t as flavourful as I hoped it’d be. I’ve been eating here for a while and it seems like their service has finally improved.

Very good Malaysian cuisine. Had lunch by myself here and got the Mee Goreng. Very flavourful meal that I thoroughly enjoyed.<br/><br/>FYI - They have $25 eftpos minimum and 3% cash discount.

my husband Rang to order takeaway (salted fish fried rice) told 20 min wait. 30 mins later still not ready. Not even started cooking. Wondering whether the young guy only put the order in when We arrived not when My husband rang. Bit disappointed as have been coming for yrs. cancelled order and left.

My partner and I had dinner at the Malaysia Makanan Restaurant last night as it is on our local area and have been wanting to try it for a while. We are glad we did because the food we got was beautiful and very well priced! We shared curry puffs, chicken skewers, chicken Hokkien noddles and a Beef Rendang (Roti Canai). The food was great but our favourite was the Hokkien noddles, the flavour the sauce held was strong and perfectly spread out over the noddles. The Beer Rendang was fantastic too! The rotis were cooked perfectly and the rendang was so flavoursome and beef tender.

Good value Malaysian<br/><br/>We had dinner with friends here on a busy Saturday night. We ordered roti canai with beef rendang, lamb curry with potato, seafood fried rice, seafood nasi goreng, char kway teow with beef, ikan bilis and green beans in garlic sauce. The curries were amazing, but we&#039;ve had better char kway teow and although the fried rice dishes were tasty, we thought that they were both a little soggy (maybe the seafood was issue). The portions are are very very generous (we couldn&#039;t eat it all) and the prices are reasonable - note that you get a 3% discount for paying cash. Even though it was incredibly busy - the service was fast and friendly!
Linna (Gluten Free)
unfortunately the waitress confused my laksa with my friends so i ended up having gluten contaminated food :(<br/><br/>ordered chicken laksa with vermicelli and no egg noodle. friend ordered a chicken laksa but with normal mixed noodles. waitress gave my friend my one and said it was the one with “normal noodles”, and i got the other one. i already started drinking the soup before i saw a yellow noodle poking out :( even tho the laksa was rly nice in terms of flavour, the gluten contamination gave me an upset tummy :/ this kind of mistake could’ve been easily prevented and yet they made such a basic mistake :/

I love this restaurant for malaysian food! Its always cooked on point and has really good value for money. Also, if you come on a weekday its generally not very busy so we never have to wait for a table. The atmosphere is also pretty chill and not noisy so you can have a great catch up with friends here too. Plenty of free parking right outside the restaurant. Another fun thing about the restaurant is the kitchen has a see-through glass window so you can watch the chefs cook up your dish! :)

Worst experience ever! Arrived this restaurant around 45minutes before it closed but one of the staffs (bald male with glasses) just gave us attitude and purposely made loud noises while moving all the table besides me. Me & my friends couldn’t even able to finish all our meals due to the stressful situation......

I’ve been here a few times before and I must say it’s consistently good. It’s a bit out of the way but I would say just as good as little Singapore or Malaya corner. Heads up the Tom yum is better than the laksa imo. Flavors are always good in 90% of dishes I’ve ordered, not too much msg but still a little bit oily. Perfect for a hangover or a cheap and cheerful. Would recommend, solid 4/5

Ordered hainam chicken rice from this place for my daughter who was sick on that day. The staff forgot to put the rice inside. She promised to replace the order next time I come in. Came in today, they said they couldn’t give the replacement. I even ordered one other dish today. Why promised they can replace when you can’t honour it?

*3.5 stars<br/><br/>I got the Hainan Chicken Rice and also tried the Mee Goreng. The chicken was nice; flavourful without being too heavily seasoned (which probably had more to do with the fact that the sauce came separately). It was also tender and had the right amount of skin/fat. 4.25/5<br/><br/>However, the Mee Goreng was far too heavily seasoned. The dish was dominated by the salty, vaguely spicy sauce, and was what I would expect from a 50c packet from Woolies, not a restaurant. Stay far away from it. 2/5

Service and product always consistent here. I've been here multiple times and both dining in person or ordering takeaway over the phone always goes well. 9 of us went to dine here tonight; food started arriving 5 minutes later and everyone had their food within 15 minutes. Pricing is very reasonable how tasty the food is, how big the portions are, and how consistent and quick the service is. Choosing to dine outside in the evening is quite comfortable. Their butter herbed chicken is beautifully deep fried, crispy and tasty. Their Hainan Chicken Rice is nice, and has no bones which some people find very convenient. Their Gado Gado is a deliciously spicy and appetising salad. Their Rotis are really nice as well. Can't wait to come back!

Having made so many trips to this place I have never been disappointed- the food is great & the service amazing. <br/><br/>My personal favorites are CKT Combination & the Chicken Ro Canai 👌🏿

Hainan Chicken! This is the place to be. Tucked away from busy Brisbane and Sunnybank this Malaysian restaurant has got one of the best Hainan in town. <br/><br/>Service size ✔️<br/>Taste ✔️<br/>Value for money ✔️<br/><br/>It’s a bit of mission for those who don’t live this side of town to experience to glory of great chicken but it’s worth the trip

One of my favourite restaurants in South Brisbane! Service is always very good and the food portions are very large. Great value for money!!

The food here is a hit and miss. Their nasi lemak, hokkien mee and butter herbal chicken are delicious!! The meat is soft and tasty! But their singapore (fried) noodle looks and taste completely different from the normal singapore (fried) noodle. The worst is their man fan (cantonese fried noodle / wan tan hor gravy mixed with rice). I ordered the man fan for take away and guess what? They didn't separate the rice & gravy into different containers/bags so when I got home, it was all soaking in gravy. Normally in Malaysia, hawkers would always know to separate the noodles/rice from mixing with the gravy so that it doesn't soak & spoil the food as fast & it could be kept longer and be eaten whenever we want. It's common sense. The taste of the man fan is below par.<br/><br/>Would definitely come and eat again and try my luck. Like I wrote it's a hit and miss. Pretty exciting! Feels like playing the lottery! Haha.

I liked this place quite a lot.<br/><br/>Apparently they changed the recipe for the curry beef very recently. <br/><br/>Food was basic but we'll executed. <br/><br/>Service is right but quick <br/><br/>Value for money: pretty good!!

My bad experiences with them are many, but I'll talk about the most recent, most appalling one. The order taker on the phone stuffed up my order. But in a baaaad way. Her English wasn't great so I'll guess that she is from a country who's primary language is not English. One wonders why a person with language barriers is given the on the phone order taking job in the first place. So she stuffed my order up, which I expected given she couldn't even read them back to me properly when I asked over the phone. She's ordered me one extra dish I did not ask for and had to pay for. Upon realising this at home, I called them immediately telling them, and the boss was apologetic enough, offering me a refund for my inconvenience. Funnily and most peculiarly, this same boss called me 2 hours later, after obviously hearing his inept order taker staff's version of the story, and gave me a condition that I was to return the extra food I didn't order, in order to get my refund. To top it off, he knew I couldn't return the food until I was available 2 days later because of work etc. This was just laughable at this stage, so I of course, couldn't be bothered returning food that would have been 2 days old by then, for petty, cheap, and less than courteous bunch of people who can't even be sincere about fixing their OWN stuff up. The other bad incident occurs regularly there, particularly when they were caught lying to my mother when they said minimum eftpos was $25 but after my mother left, they let other patrons who weren't foreign-looking, pay with card with no minimum amount. Go figure.

Fast service and great food. Everything was served fresh and came out very quickly! Could be because we had dinner a bit before 6pm so we may have beat the rush. We ordered a beef char kway teow, chicken massaman curry and salt and pepper calamari. We had coconut rice with everything. Please be aware that a large in their rices is massive and could feed a family of 4-6 people!<br/><br/>Update: May 2019<br/>Came here on a weeknight and it was nice and quiet. We were the only customers in the restaurant. Was able to order a char kway teow, chicken laksa and hainanese chicken for a total of 30 bucks due to a promo they had going! Buy 2 dishes and get a laksa for half price. Super good value for money! Portions were huge and the laksa was amazing, the soup was really tasty. Highly recommended!
Kan Do
Mrs Kan Do and I joined the ever affable Joe K for lunch here.  We arrived early for our lunch appointment but to our surprise Joe had already arrived and had perused the menu. <br/>As at Falalalah, we had a wonderful time chatting to Joe and took our time to order our meals.<br/>Joe and I had our minds set on the nasi lemak (coconut rice with beef rendang, chicken curry, ikan bilis and boiled egg with sambal), which is a good general test of the food at a Malaysian restaurant. Mrs Kan Do ordered a seafood mee goreng (fried noodles). <br/>We ordered curry puffs and satay chicken skewers to share. <br/>The curry puffs and satay chicken arrived first. Both dishes were poor. <br/>The curry puffs were super oily and the filling was insubstantial and flavourless, and rated a 1. <br/>The chicken on the skewers was at least cooked reasonably (despite not being grilled) but the sauce was sweet and thin without peanuts. This rated a 2-2.5. <br/>The nasi lemak was okay, considering how poor Malaysian food in Brisbane is. I did not like the rice which seemed to be a bit old, and did not really have coconut rice flavour. The chicken curry was bland, although the chicken was cooked reasonably well. The beef rendang was the best part of the meal for me with reasonably good flavour and it was complemented well with the ikan bilis (anchovies and peanuts) and sambal egg. Overall this dish rated a 3-3.5. <br/>Mrs Kan Do's mee goreng was bland and certainly lacked saltiness and a bit of chilli heat. The noodles, prawns and seafood in the dish were otherwise cooked reasonably well. This dish rated a 2.5. <br/>Overall, a very average meal, thankfully salvaged by delightful company (although we did miss you too Meatballs And Beef Cheeks!).

This restaurant is awesome if you're feeding a family of five, the food is tasty with a great hint of Asian spices and aromatic. Always stick to the chef's special, however the salt and pepper calamari is a big let down, mine were too salty and inedible. Best dishes are nasi lemak, beef rendang and chicken laksa.
Jackson Ngo
ordered a take away hokkien noodles this avo, it's so oily!!! omg... it's just like soaking the noodles in the Oil !_! last month i had a takeaway of nasi lemak frm here as well, asked them to swap the beef rendang to chicken curry, on the phone they said okay, but end up with both of them are Beef rendang!!!

Portion sizes are huge and cheap. Great for anyone with large appetites! Food is average and the majority of the dishes that we ordered was quite bland. The roti canai was oily and quite crunchy and accompanied by a mildly spicy but tasty dipping sauce. Would be back to try other dishes.

After a couple of months of absence, we re-visited this place twice during the last 2 weeks. The nasi lemak and mee goreng were great. The Hor Fun and Chicken Rice were not like what it used to be. Unfortunately the portions are smaller but the prices have increased. Remember to carry enough cash with you as they have removed their credit card facilities but interestingly when you go to the counter to pay, there is still a big logo of MASTERCARD. I asked the cashier and he said they have just left it there.

Went on a Monday lunchtime - was a ghost town (a right contrast to Friday nights & weekends!). Had the Hainan chicken & rice and loved it! Portion size on the chicken was like for 2 people - heaps generous; couldn't finish it. Also rate the Ho Fun - always has that breath-of-the-wok taste which I adore *drool*. This place is no-frills; bit hectic during peak times but excellent value for money & there's some real winners on the menu.
The Quiet Critic
It's hit and miss with this place. I've settled on getting the vegetarian soup most times and it's rather nice. Lots of veggies and the separate the soup / noodles & veggies when you take away ( a big positive for me ) <br/>I do ask for extra veggies at times and feel they don't do that but still charge the extra. Next time I will mention something if I'm not satisfied. <br/>Just on a side note, their minimum is $25 on eftpos. That's way too high ( I'm pretty sure there is no minimum for eftpos, just a cash grab I'm assuming ) <br/>Eftpos is legal tender even if it's under $25 so unfortunately when I know my order won't come to $25 I go to another restaurant.

Staff are welcoming and friendly, however there are far better choices for authentic Malaysian cuisine. As a Malaysian I was disappointed in the dishes. Nasi Lemak while relatively tasty, was lacking in technique. There was barely any meat, and the little meat there was, was tough. <br/>The Char Kuey Teow, a easy Malaysian classic was bland and lacked all the essential ingredients. The dish consisted of just noodles and chicken - no fishball or fish cake or anything that would add flavour.<br/>

Extremely disappointing experience ordering takeaway from this restaurant.<br/>1) No one knew what was meant by "gluten free". Once explained, they assured the Hainan chicken rice would be gluten free even though I explained multiple times that soy sauce contains gluten. They said just the steamed chicken would be prepared - however when we got the takeaway - the chicken was covered in soy sauce.<br/>2) They DEFINITELY add MSG and confirmed this to us verbally. They actually asked blatantly "can MSG be added if gluten free"? Which means they add MSG to all of their dishes.<br/>3) We ordered a 'chinese veges with garlic sauce' which costs a whopping $12 - and when we picked up our takeaway - the container was only one-third full. It was just poor form and very sneaky, and embarrassing for us as we had invited guests over for dinner.<br/>4) All of the food was salty / overcooked. <br/><br/>A very expensive meal ($138 for 8 people) for the amount and quality we got.
JJ
We come here fairly often for the Cantonese Hor Fun, which we think is pretty authentic. The other food on the menu (e.g. Chicken rice - only thing missing is a free bowl of soup) is generally delicious, but authenticity is another thing. Service is decent and fast. Quantity is also quite large so small eaters should share. Seating options are pretty good and the ambiance is simple and comfortable.<br/>Problem is, last time we were there (only a few days ago) all the food we ordered made us REALLY thirsty after, meaning they added MSG to the food. This wasn't the case the previous times we were there.<br/><br/>FYI: they accept EFTPOS if you spend a min. order of $25. We didn't know that at first.

Food is a hit and miss at Malaysia Makanan. I've been here a few times and generally order safe dishes like the Chicken and Salty Fish Fried Rice and the Hor Fun as these 2 seem to work well. Ordered the Sambal Prawns and what a real disappointment. I am originally from Malaysia and can say the Sambal Prawns is not authentic at all. Yet to find a place that makes decent Sambal Prawns and not some sweet, watered down nonsense. Also, I can vouch for Nicole's comments below. I was there when the incident happened. Nicole was assertive (not rude) but I can understand having to wait that long and constantly being told "not too long now". The manager didn't handle the situation properly. It was an extremely busy night and what the manager could have done was apologise, throw in a bag of prawn crackers and move on. It was a clear mistake from the restaurant which displayed a lack of communication with their customers and this shows poor management skills. Especially telling a customer "don't be silly one... other people are waiting too...". It also looks poorly on your restaurant when you tell your staff of in front of customers. I run a business too and if there was a clear mistake or poor communication I would apologise and move on to maintain good business with customers. This is a tough industry to be in and it is a shame the way your business handled itself. I honestly hope you can learn to improve your service, you are after all in the hospitality industry.

Thought we would try takeaway from here tonight. I called order through 45 mins prior and arrived to be told pay now and then waited another 1 hour for it and when told 5 mins away four times and after a total of 1.45mins left and had to ask for a refund!!!! Have been told it's good food but not worth a 2 hr wait when seeing others arrive and collect before me also! People waiting everywhere - why not tell me when I ordered there was a wait - they even called me back to confirm order 5 mins after placing it. <br/><br/>Went to subway in same block - in & out in 10 for half the price.
Fungus
I quite liked this place. It was cheap but very tasty and their sambal was authentic. Their butter chicken was amazing and they were definitely generous portion sizes. Great for groups. Definitely worth the drive out to the burbs

This is the 2nd time my hubby has accidentally" Came at the wrong time" when they were shut. Today is australia day the 26/1/16 Tuesday. I asked my hubby if he could try and see if this restaurant was open and get me a chicken and corn soup as a supper snack. He was there at 8.30pm and he rang me back and said the man told him " WE ARE NOT COOKING, IT IS 8.30PM MATE!!". This man is skinny and wear glasses and seems like he is in charge. Of course, if you are not cooking, at least politely say " Sorry, we are closing and we wont be cooking". I assumed this is the attitudes of malaysians or asian culture? It is only 8.30pm and from my memory I remembered they closed a lot later than 8.30pm and all he wanted to order for me was a soup. My hubby said there was still alot of people in the restaurant eating , so it didnt appear that they are in a rush to close the shop. This rating is only for the poor attitude of that man and it happened twice now.

I have absolutely nothing good to say about the food . We ordered 4 dishes and none was restaurant quality . I would honestly make it better at home . One of the dish was noodles and I'm pretty sure that they used ketchup as sauce , other was was broth with a blob of packet noodles in it and very chewy squid . kids enjoyed the ketchup :( I won't be back

We go to this restaurant regularly. Love the food and the service. could not flaw it for anything. The service is great the food is great and find it good value. Highly recommended based on our experience.

You can tell it's going to be good based on the sheer number of people here on most nights. Service is swift, portions are generous and flavours are authentic. Lucky to have this casual eatery in the suburb!!
Mike
What's funny is this place has been here so long and it's just as good as the first day I've been there. Solid prices, portions are enormous. The laksa is actually the best, better than the ones I've had in Malaysia. Will always recommend.

Went there for lunch 20 October 2015, all the dishes we had were very salty. Ordered Assam squid doesn't taste like Assam at all. Ho fan was ok but very salty so was the beef radang so was the tom yum soup. The only positive satay stick was ok

My boyfriend and I have been here quite a few times recently since we moved to the area. This place seems to get a ton of business and is almost always busy if you don't get here early enough. <br/>The service has always been great when I arrive early and we're usually served in a decent amount of time. They do have to cook after all! <br/>When they get busy, the service can take much longer and that shouldn't come as a surprise so I'm not going to judge too harshly on it.<br/>As for the food, most of the things on here are not things I'd eat but I do love me some short noodle soup. It's always very hot when given to me and very delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I've also had the sweet and sour chicken with no complaints as well. Prices seem to be a bit expensive but maybe that's because where I'm from, you can get all you can eat for 9USD. <br/>I don't really have any complaints other than the waiting times can sometimes be very long, and it's a little on the pricier side compared to other places around this one.
Frenchfrygirl
This place is inconsistently good. I have been a few times, having tried the laksa and the nasi goreng with 4/10 times being good times. Decor is very minimal...they use plastic, cheap chairs for outdoors and it gives it a very, "cheap asian restaurant" feel. There are better malaysian restaurants out there.

We always really enjoy our meals here at Calamvale.  The service is lovely and friendly.  The quality of the beef used in their dry curry is a question, however the flavours are just lovely, so we just cut around the bits that are a bit fatty, and we enjoy the rest!  Gorgeous break away from the mayhem that is Sunnybank!
Dinplug Brown
Very friendly service, loads of smiles !<br/><br/>Food was delivered quickly and as expected was tasty and spicy in the right places.<br/><br/>I did not enjoy the texture of the beef curry with it's tenderised thin beef and 'par' cooked potato, the flavour however was beautiful.<br/><br/>Pricing is reasonable. Cafe environment.<br/><br/>Would I go again ? Yes but only if I was in the area or maybe as a quick lunch spot  ???

After turning into a bit of a hermit over the past few weeks and staying at home and getting takeaway, we were long due a night out.  I didn't know what I felt like - such a dilemma - but hubby had had his eye on Malaysia Makanan at Calamvale for a while, so that's where we ended up this evening.<br/><br/>Excellent choice I have to say.  With the Calamvale Carnival on, we were a little worried they might be busy and they were, but I get the feeling that was just because it's such a good place and I'm sure it's that busy every Saturday night.  However we snagged a table right under a heater and that was good enough for me.<br/><br/>The menu was the usual malaysian suspects and we went with a serve of the vegetarian spring rolls, seafood mee goreng and the Mussaman Beef. - standard ordering for us at a malaysian joint.  Wellf both of us were super impressed with our choices - the spring rolls were really fresh and delicious - just a step above the normal spring roll and I can't quite put my finger on why, but they were seriously good.  The Mee Gorgeng was probably one of the best we've had to be honest - it was really spicy which we both really loved.  The Mussaman was also great in flavour, but we were a little surprised to find the beef thin sliced (I personally love this, hubby wasn't quite so sure) and it was obvious the potatoes had been cooked separate from the sauce, again it didn't make a huge difference to the dish but it was noticeable.<br/><br/>There have been a few reviews about the service not being up to par but I completely disagree - service was friendly and efficient and it was great to see the owner (I assume) checking up on everyone.  In all a really good dinner and I will definately return to give the laksa a whirl at some stage (I looooove laksa). Great food in the burbs!

No thanks...but there are better!. VERY VERY RUDE take it or leave it service, utter misrepresentation of Malaysian Food. The sambal (normally a dhal or curry) that came with the Roti tasted just like the Laksa gravy my friend had. Oh dear ???? something must be very very wrong!

This is Australia - we are NOT halal. Went here for lunch (6 adults, 3 children) and 2 of the children do not eat Malaysian food. They opted for Subway - healthy meat and salad rolls. The waiter at Makanan was ready to let them eat their Subway with us, but one of the kids had ham and the other had chicken on their rolls. The chicken was allowed, but ham not allowed in the restaurant because restaurant is halal! Kids were forced to eat outside restaurant area, sitting on the concrete walkway. Disgusting! Excuse me,THIS IS AUSTRALIA AND WE ARE NOT HALAL. If you choose to live in our country, then you should live by our rules. If you want halal, then stay in your own country!! This is a beautiful, peaceful country to live in and that's obviously why you chose to come here and live, so eat and live like an Australian. We WERE regular customers at Malaysian Makanan, but we'll never ever go there again.

Below average. Overpriced and meat in curry was very dry. will not be going back

Great menu, best Laksa in this side of town, great sweet& sour dishes, great food. Customer service prob needs to be a bit friendlier.

Meh.... Consistency is bit of an issue here, although I would say it's gone down hill over my last few visits <br/>(eg. laksa tastes watered down, very bland and the deep fried tofu tasted bit funny)<br/>Also worth pointing out, they over charged us on two separate occassions, lunch special menu prices billed at normal prices... very unfortunate.

Food is great Except Deep fried ice cream

Chicken laksa. Huge servings at a cheap price. would definitely come back when I'm feeling like Malaysian.

Rude and racist staff. We used to dine in this restaurant considering we live at Northside of brisbane but recently I noticed that their staff are rude and racist; asked the staff if we can get a bottle of water I was told that I need to get the water from the fridge, but then I noticed that the costumer next to us was served by their staff with water..won't recommend this place.

Drop in standards. We used to order take away very regularly from this restaurant but have noticed a distinct drop in food quality over the last few months. A few very ordinary dishes lately and a right shocker last night. The chicken curry with egg noodles was disgusting. Tasted bad, full of chicken skin and bone fragments, not much chicken in it either. Tasted like it came out of the rubbish bin.

Rude service. Came early for dinner at 5:30 and went to sit inside. Was greeted by one of the staff with 'how many people'. I said 5 of us. He then asked how long we will be. I thought I misunderstood his question but no he wanted to know how long we will take to eat. Wow! Needless to say we said not long at all as we decided to take our business elsewhere. Really who in their right mind that has a restaurant business would ask a stupid question like that? My family and friends eat there quite a bit but I will tell them of my experience. We will not eat there again.

Decent Laksa. Really consistent with quality of laksa. We always order the Chicken Laksa and Hainan Chicken rice.<br/><br/>The Chicken Laksa has a lot of chicken in it so thats a plus...<br/><br/>Only wished this place served some authentic Malaysian Beverages, like Teh O or something....

Service was not too good. Ordered Chicken Curry Laska and HoFun Beef. Taste wise pretty average, asked for sambal but wasn't told abt extra charge of 50cents, knew only when paying. Bad attitude and not honest to customer. Beef in the HoFun taste not fresh. Laska as expected more like curry (expected as the name said so). Wouldn't go back again, unless u looking for big portion meals.

Great service, quick turn around. Ordered and ready in 15mins on a Friday night and the restaurant was quiet busy. However the food wasn't to my taste, I love Asian food. But it resembled typical Chinese takeaway in Malaysian style. Nothing special, but not bad.

Great food poor customer service.. Love the food. Customer service is very poor and rude. Favourite dish Laksa, char keow teow and Special fried rice. Price is reasonable.

I use to always come here and it's reasonably priced and somewhat pleasant. Food is nice but not outstanding, my kids love it so therefore I go anyway. But the last 3 times I've been there to dine in, every single time the customer service has been very poor and at times just rude. As if they have no time for you especially tonight when what look like a supervisor slammed my plate onto my table in a hurry to serve another. <br/>Well I don't come here for customer service obviously, as I said, the food is nice enough for me to come back. Pity tho lol

Tasty Hainan Chicken Rice. Been here several times and love the Hainan Chicken Rice. Hainan Chicken Rice is one of those bench mark dishes which can tell you a lot about a restaurant, anyhow I think next time I should venture out and try a few of the other dishes.. but the Hainan Chicken Rice is just so good here!

I went to the restaurant today because I was craving the Chicken Rice. We'll, the waiter was rude, he took my order. A waitress cleaned the tables and she seemed nice. The chicken rice was tasteless, the ginger dip was so old it tastes bitter, there was no soup, no shallots in the chicken only cucumber. Some cucumber in the chicken. Rice was huge and it seems a waste because j could only eat a-third. Don't think I'll go back in a hurry.

Great Laksa. Laska is huge and very good. I've noticed some complaints about the service. I was there nice and early at 4:30, so not busy. They seemed nice enough but with Laksa like that I don't care about the service lol.

Good food..worst service ever. I am not sure how to rate this place. The food is something special. Very yummy! Service is dreadful. I am used to bad service from cheap eats asian restaurant. But consider yourself lucky if thhey remember to bring all your dishes without forgetting. Also don't even expect to get all the mains at the same time. Most of the time one of us would finish our meal and then the secon one would come. The waiters are rude and do not understand the first thing about service.<br/>We have decided that if we crave the food, we will order a takeaway. It is too stressful to eat there.

Unhappy 2nd visit. Went back for the taohu goreng, taste not as good as the first time. Fried noodles was gd though. Regretted ordering the vegetarian Char Kway Teow, tasted nothing like CKT at all!! Waitress told us we can order the canned drink at $1 cos of lunch special. I choose a soya drink and asked her if that's $1 as well, she nodded her head n sd yes. During payment, the male manager/cashier charged us $2.50 for the drink instead. Told him what happened and he replied that my vegetarian ckt is not under lunch special and the soya drink is more expensive, he also claimed that the waitress is new. He was firm and has no intention to honour the mistake. Nvm, I paid n left, might skip this place next time....

Yum. Looking to reminisce over a rendang about our recent holiday in KL and Borneo we chose the suburban Malaysia Makanan Restaurant. There were a few tables remaining on this Saturday night and we were seated immediately. The roti canai with curry sauce for entrée was deliciously coconut-creamy with a hint of heat. The three pieces of crispy straight-from-the-pan roti was perfectly portioned for the two of us to share the mopping up of the curry sauce. The dry beef curry was the standout. The deep brown-black sauce coated succulent bite-sized pieces of beef, the richness of which married perfectly with the pillow of white steamed rice. <br/>There were some downsides. The room temperature water in paper cups was better than nothing, but chilled would be better. The salt and pepper squid was acceptable, saved mostly by the large pieces of succulent squid. There was a slight stodginess to the batter and a lack of pepper. These shortcomings are forgivable and will not stop us from returning. For the very reasonable prices, generous portions, and the remaining menu items we want to taste we will come back again when a bit of nostalgia for our Malaysian adventure grips us again.

This place never fails to satisfy my craving for malaysia food. Does the word hainan chicken means anything other than double portion with extra obesity? Well, here it does. Those bastards are making me far with their tasty food. The CKT is a bit of a hit and miss ...

Absolutely delicious! I ordered the char kwey teow and my boyfriend had the curry chicken with egg noodles. It was so good!

Yummy. Nice hawker style food. Love their Char Kway Teow and Tofu goreng. The chicken rice isn't too bad either. Place used to be good but has gone downhill.

Hainan Chiken Rice!!!. Don't expect much on their service. Just enjoy their awesome Malaysian dishes.<br/><br/>This time, we tried Hainan Chicken Rice, one of the most famous dish in that country. It was really really!!

Great Laksa & CKT. Was delishes! However the satay and roti canai and kam heong chicken wasn't fantastic. The chicken rice was disappointing. Too soft / gooey / mashed up and wasn't fragrant enough.

Awesome Food. Malaysia Makanan never fails to please. We have had several dishes and all devine. HUGE meals and the flavours are wonderful. Our favourite is the sweet & sour chicken but all of their dishes are great. We have been going to this restaurant for years & will continue for years to come. Keep up the good work guys :)

Hainanese Chicken Rice. Simply the best! Terrific portions. I make this dish a once weekly event.

The hainanese chicken and rice is excellent. Large serving of seafood and chicken laksa, which are really fantastic and worthy. Quick service. Wonderful!

Malaysia Makanan is pretty much like your average asian restaurant where it's cheap, big portions and pretty similar in flavour to all other restaurants. We all agreed that Malaysia Makanan is more on the better Asian restaurants scale. Service wasn't too bad considering my girlfriends rated the service as horrible.  Even though this was called chicken with fried noodles, it's just your typical chicken chow mein.  Dang it! I forgot what this was. D: But this was good. It had a hint of spice and really really flavoursome.  Chicken green curry with coconut rice... maaaa favourite. It was good. Spicy but good. ♥

I didn't really like the food here to be honest. The portions were plentiful but the flavours weren't too my liking. Initially I wanted to come back to try more dishes, but now I don't think I would.

The servings for both meals were huge! The mee goreng feels quite authentic, with the tofu pieces, tomato and curry leaves?
YunYun Xu
The coconut rice was cooked perfectly with a subtle coconut aroma and taste, the chicken was meaty and tender, the fried eggs were delicious with the sambal and the pickled vegetables were not too sweet.

A hidden gem in Calamvale, Malaysia Makanan has become a regular of ours when we’re hankering for some authentic Malaysian fare.
