Review Dami Japanese Restaurant - Brisbane

We ordered the nigiri and we were very disappointed. The cut of the fish weren’t proportion, the salmon was very thin and tuna was thick. The rice was too much, it can’t even be considered as one bite. The sushi rolls we ordered had too much sauce on it and it overpowers the flavour of the filling of the sushi. I would rather go to a generic sushi train than come back here.

Attentive and friendly service 4/5. California roll is salad sauce roll, rice is good 2/5 :( Okonomiyaki cooking techniques are excellent, crispy edges and photo friendly. But the mix has too much flour and not enough cabbage, which creates a thick and crispy texture, totally differ from the authentic soft texture with crisp from the cabbage, sauce topping could be more sour 3/5. Eel don tastes good, rice a bit too dry, it will be better to serve with cabbage thin salad or pickles to enhance texture 3/5. Serve size wise is very good value. Overall experience 3/5. No card sub charge.

Always add Damis number to my new phone. Can't live without Dami. I wonder how many people I've sent to this restaurant- It's such a fave honestly. Portions got a bit smaller over the years but still tastier and more affordable than many others places. 10/10 recommend.

Amazing service and food! We dinned in tonight and can’t believe how delicious everything was. The lady who served us was super nice and funny. Everything came out to us super quick. Will definitely be back for this delicious food!

This is our go-to family restaurant in the area. They treat us like family and our kids Iove the food. Eating in is always relaxing with super friendly staff. I always order the agedashi Tofu and chef makes it gluten- free for me. We’ve been regulars over past couple of years with the consistency and quality of food is always 10/10.

Ordered take away, food came out quickly and staff at the counter was very pleasant. Chicken was cooked beautifully, could just have a little more chicken and sauce. I will definitely go back.

The environment and atmosphere in the restaurant is good, customer service is great. The food however, leaves much to be desired. Much better seasoned foods at other cheaper restaurants.

Freshest sushi I have ever tasted, eo delicious. Always hits the spot and the staff are so friendly. Highly recommended this place.

Poor service, waited for table and then had to go up and ask for her to take our order. It was busy for takeaway with one girl out the front. Plastic cutlery if you believe it. Food served in plastic containers also. I’d recommend only takeaway or bring your own fork and glass.

Great food, great service, affordable price! Our favourite Japanese restaurant for a relaxed night out.

The staff were friendly but that’s the only good thing about this restaurant. The sushi was bland, sashimi bowl used a Korean sauce that did not compliment the fish and takoyaki was served with a frozen centre! Many dishes had iceberg lettuce which does not below in Japanese cuisine. This is well below the average Japanese restaurant in the Sunnybank area. I know the reviews are high but when there’s not a single asian in the restaurant on a Friday night, you have to consider who is writing the reviews.
Concerned Asian Girl
The restaurant is very cute and has a nice vibe, and for someone who is very familiar with Asian flavours, I was excited to try this place after seeing the high reviews. Unfortunately, I left hungry and disappointed :(
I was confused about some of the flavours. The sashimi bowl diverged for what a sashimi bowl is supposed to be. Perhaps I’m too traditional, but there were things like lettuce and gochujang which took away from the natural flavours of the fish. On the other hand, the other dishes we ordered did not have much flavour. There were also lots of flies that kept landing on our food and table. I hope this information will be useful for the future :)
Mmm With Friends
The staff were polite and welcoming, and were accommodating when our takoyaki were still frozen in the centre. However, the quality of the sushi “Alaska Roll” and the sashimi salad rice bowl were disappointing. The flavours were bland, and below the standard of mainstream Japanese food. I would ask the owners to reflect on their choice of chef - because whatever is coming out of that kitchen is simply not that great. Lettuce does not belong in Japanese cuisine. Good luck.

TL;DR: With the fine attention to detail for customer service all the way to the accessibility of the local Japanese eatery, Dami is a real treat that has been standing here for years and is not going away any time soon.

This small stretch of road can sometimes bring up a real good find. Right in front of the car sales yard, a few business along with some fine eateries sit there, with Dami possibly being the most eye-catching of the lot. What is serves is somewhat basic Japanese fare, but that basic fare is made with a keen eye for details. It will fill you right up, so step on in.

Another month, and we have ourselves another PPV event on the WWE Network. This one was one of their more enjoyable and gimmicky events, the Elimination Chamber. How excited I was - even more than usual. That could only mean on thing: I needed to find something to eat while watching the event. It was back to scrolling through the UberEats app, it became a case of seeing what looked good and what would be open around the given time. Well, what do we have here? After seeing it adjacent to other places that did delivery in the past, I was stoked to see good old Dami open right up for business in the delivery sector. After that, a few orders were plugged in, the time and place were set, and Bob's your uncle.

At first. Let me explain. Upon a few years experience with delivery services, the customer service part is not one of the richest aspects of it. It has the general structure of them arrive at your house, maybe you get a friendly fellow or lass drop off your order, and fingers crossed that the food gets there in a timely manner. Maybe it has always been the case, but I reckon all these online delivery outlets have had restaurants up the game. Still, more often than not it still gets stuck at whether the food arrives on time and is good enough to eat.

Dami goes beyond that. Upon placing that order, it was not long before I got a phone call from them asking about the details. To me, this actually gives the restaurant credit from them showcasing attention to detail. It was also the first time they had an order be in such advance and were simply checking to make sure the details were correct. That maneuver comes in conjunction with another important aspect in customer service - how the waitstaff come across to their clients. The lady on the other end was polite, and very personable. I can tell from that small interaction that when dining in, clients are treated very well.

Also with the service, this is amongst the quickest that I have experienced. Proximity possibly helps, the preparations all the way to the food being at the doorstep took less than half an hour. In the meantime, the UberEats app has installed a tipping option for each delivery to the drive - he would have gotten a generous bonus from me if it were in place back then. It all creates a prelude of positivity that will boost enjoyment when eating the food. That was definitely the case.

Menus will differ slightly between eating in, and getting it via the delivery app. Among them though, a general gist can be analysed. This appears to be more of a social eatery still keeping a relatively casual atmosphere. Therefore, you have the usual donburi and noodles for an individual portion, as well as plenty of bits and pieces to share. These include the general gyozas, tempura bites et al, but it doesn't stop there. What possibly gives the menu most of its character would be the sushi, starting of modestly enough with your nigiris, shashimis and all that - party platters are available at short-term request - but you have got to check out the fusion rolls. These are both filled and topped with all kinds of goodies, enough to be filling and leave an impression.

If the memory serves me correctly, with any of the main meals via delivery (at least where UberEats is concerned) the price is bumped up a little to incorporate a default inclusion of some entree bites. These were two spring rolls and three takoyaki balls. This is a great idea, giving just a little extra for the clients as well as keeping up value for money. With there being a first time for everything, the takoyaki balls came dry - none of the sauce, nor the characteristic shavings that come along with. These suckers were still tasty, with the creamy filling being very hot, as well as the fact this might have had the biggest lot of octopus in the middle. The spring rolls were more or less spring rolls, still hot and with a great pastry coating. Whomever thought of putting in this ingrained upgrade, you sir are an ingenuous one.

So getting onto how the food was, it was exceptional. My house mate often isn't too finicky in general, and the Japanese style of chicken curry is sure to impress him every time. So it was that that went on the order first. Even in not getting a bite of it, an observation towards the way it was served gets Dami some more credit. The restaurant gave a generous amount of curry sauce that was served in its own tub. That amount was more than enough to mix with the bed of rice, and the several bits of crumbed chicken. When credit ought to be given, it will be given.

For mine, I went back and forth on the selection, ending up eventually with Teriyaki beef. Essentially, this was the classic dish with a combination of meat and vegetables on top of rice. Both this meal, and the chicken curry, were generously portioned and filling. Many a Japanese takeaway have I frequented, and the portions here are up at the higher end of the scale. Each piece of beef was just as tender as the last, which meant they had a good cut in the kitchen. They were soaked in the teriyaki sauce to the extent you get the taste, but it is not overwhelming. Various vegetables including broccoli, carrot, and onion were mixed through, creating a colourful aesthetic which gave off plenty of crunch. Mixing it all in, there was just enough sauce to compliment the rice preventing anything from going dry.

In addition to the two meals, I threw in an entree platter. These platters are chef's choice, giving clients three random entree bites. I got platter B, which gave us some dim sims in the flavour of choice (it was prawn), crab cream croquettes, and tori karage. Between this, the bonus extras with each main meal, and some delicious main meals, about the only thing which would have rounded it off perfectly might have been a Ramune. Other than that, no complaints.

When the word entree platter comes to mind, it possibly is either a big selection of all they got or they select the greatest hits, and choose a couple of pieces from that lot. They use neither of those options, instead getting the full order of each concerned bite. The dumplings were that standard variety that was still hard to fault. They appeared to have been steamed, giving off that fluffy outer layer. That then gives the filling - prawn this time - a unique flavour and texture combination that brings out aromas that are hard to do otherwise. Those crab cream croquettes were even better, with a delicious mild, creamy center that went well with a robust crunchy outside.

However, the best of the best came with the tori karage chicken. They served big pieces of chicken karage, which had been cooked twice to give off the best crunch that they could conjure up. Inside this double cooking, the chicken became some of the most tender, most moist meat that you could ever want to come across and it only got better from there. A fusion of sauces, one being mayonnaise and the other teriyaki, gives of a distinct flavour in conjunction to a creamy texture, then is spread around every single piece. Almost smothered in fact, and this is so delicious and moreish - certainly a must to order when you are here.

Dami is several cuts above average, which means considering that we are talking about Japanese cuisine, that it is higher than originally anticipated. Serving sizes are generous and filling, each morsel of food is given the due attention and treatment to ensure both quality and taste is at a consistently high level. It is almost as good as it could get, just that bit shy of the perfect score of 5.0. I'm sure the sweets they got in store will be just as delicious, and could blow your socks off. It will be difficult to find Japanese eats that are both high quality, and as accessible as Dami. You have a real diamond on your hands.

Japanese restaurant owns by Korean owner that sells Shumai. I guess it makes sense in a less Asian populated neighbourhood. The food was not too bad just too much mayonnaise which makes everything bit over cheesy.
Manz
We got there half another before closing time, they were very accommodating and still let us order from the full menu. The food came out pretty quick and service was swift. It's probably more Korean Japanese with flavours such Kim chi spicy udon and yellow cheese sauce on the sushi. I wasn't much of a fan of the yellow cheese sauce, the sushi would've tasted pretty great without it. Overall the food was good.

This place serves AMAZING and DELICIOUS food!!!! I really need to emphasise this because the food was so and really filling! The serving sizes were huge. I dare say the sushi rolls are probably the biggest I've ever seen in Brisbane. The okonomiyaki was really crispy, chewy and delicious. They were really generous with their sauces, which makes the food so tasty.

Love this place!! Never let down, food is always fresh and amazing. Staff are super lovely. Can do dine in or take away and quality is the same. My favorite is the crunchy roll and okonomoyaki

Since when could a place that served weird tempura like 3 year old kid's work rated above 4.0? Tbh the dishes were elementary level of Japanese cuisine. You call that sushi?seriously?
Tomcat
Dami has been talked about by Mrs Tomcat for months. The dark and moody Japanese eatery specializes in a variety of Japanese sushi, noodle soup and rice bowls. We were there for weekday lunch and after reviewing their extensive menu and premade sushi offerings, ordered: Teriyaki chicken rice ($11), chicken katsu rice ($12), salmon avocado sushi ($4) and California roll ($3.70).

The salmon avocado contains raw salmon, cucumber, avocado, shredded cabbage, mayo and nori. The salmon was fresh and flavourful, rice cooked to perfection with good chewiness and fragrant rice vinegar flavours. Each ingredient complemented the salmon and worked brilliantly together. 4/5

California roll was up next with crab sticks, avocado, fly fish roe, nori and mayo. First impression: lacked fly fish roe. A taste of the sushi roll however made the roe a minor issue. The sushi presented strong crab stick and avocado flavours with enhanced creaminess from the mayo. Paired with perfectly cooked rice, you have a sushi roll that excites the palate. No wonder this is Mrs Tomcat’s fav dish. 4/5

Teriyaki chicken rice arrived within 10min. The fragrant bowl of goodies contains sliced thigh meat with mixed veggies and white rice. A taste of the meat and I was blown away by the tender & juicy mouthfeel followed by “wok burn” taste (in a good way). The teriyaki sauce was perfectly balanced with right amount of sweet vs salty. The veggies were crunchy with each piece covered by the fragrant black sauce. Paired with very well cooked rice, one’s palate was taken to Japan. Oishii! 5/5

Chicken katsu was the last dish to arrive with crumbed chicken breast covered with a special brown sauce, finely chopped cabbage and steamed white rice. The chicken was crunchy, juicy and full of flavour. The brown drizzles showed strong Worcestershire sauce, soy, vinegar, ginger, BBQ and hints of spice. The dish was complemented again with perfectly cooked rice. As an overall package, it’s a tad on the salty side. 3.5/5

The restaurant encourages self-service where all cutleries and sauces are provided near the counter. The lady taking our order was polite, patient and keen to recommend menu items based on preferred taste. For a busy weekday lunch, it’s a 4/5

Hint: their lunch special items and sushi varieties is an average 4/5. I rarely give 5/5 scoring but their Teriyaki chicken rice is perfect from my humble opinion.

Dami sushi has very tasty sushi, wakame and beef salad. Looking forward to trying more things from their menu, as they seem to have quite an impressive variety.

Not Good! Service was fine but we were the only ones in the restaurant so hard to muck that up I guess. Food was not nice, tempura batter was too thick like fish and chips rather than the almost translucent light batter that it should be. Okonomiyaki appeared like a freshly heated frozen version - not nice. Sushi mildly ok, won't be back.

Was once good. Not so now. Portions are tight and there are better options elsewhere.

The rice is ok. However, I'm no longer excited by Dami

We had the tempura udon (batter was a bit heavy and too oily) and chicken curry udon which tasted like it came out of a store bought packet. Food wasn't value for money either, we reckon Sushi Edo or Ginga has more bang for your buck!
The Invisible Food Critic
Been a while since Ive been here but recall it was still quite good and the sashimi was fresh. However the prices could get little steep... Well it Japanese and depends what you order I guess. Good place for sashimi cravings!

Favorite local restaurant. My wife and I have been coming here for years.

Wonderful food, and great service.

Fantastic Japanese food; highly recommend it.

Best sushi in Brisbane. Great service and delicious food. Reccommend the Big Chicken and Philadelphia sushi.

Not worth the trouble. The first time I went there with my partner after we moved to the area. We walked in and awkwardly stood there waiting to be greeted about 8-10 minutes pass being ignored, being in such a small place means they walked past us without acknowledgment finally told us they were full despite the front having tables clear without any indication of being reserved. The second time I went was for lunch while sitting at the laundromat nearby. I just ordered takoyaki which was expensive compared to most other places but it was soggy and drowned in mayo no takoyaki sauce and really disappointing.

I was looking forward to having a Japanese place nearby but they're not really worth it.

VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!! VERY RUDE!!!. Those two Asian ladies that work there were SO RUDE!!! I have never experienced such rudeness in a business environment and it was totally uncalled for. I had my cousin order me crunch roll #2 on my way to meet up with them and when I got there it was the wrong order, I stopped the lady and she got mad and said raising her voice that my cousin said veggie rolls and she that she asked her couple times to make sure and our friend who was with my cousin at the time of the order backed her up saying that she clearly heard her say crunch rolls #2, that Asian lady that works there stormed off. they eventually gave my correct order but they didnt' even offer to give me the soup and salad that was supposed to go with my order until we asked for it. SO TOTALLY RUDE!!! I WILL NOT RECOMMEND ANYBODY TO EVER EAT THERE AGAIN!!!

Highly disappointed. Went to Dami because of the rate of 86, after dinner I believe it only deserve 68. Can't imagine a proper Japanese restaurant give you package wasabi and you have to ask for it. Sushi is average, tempura is terrible, udon noodle soup is too far sweet, we drank a lot of water after the meal. We ordered 2 green tea, they brought T2 tea package for us and charged $6 each person. I will not even drink it if it is complimentary. We are surprised it is Korean runs restaurant, not Japanese.

Amazing pork katsu & tasty sushi. This place serves the best pork katsu in Brisbane. I recommend ordering the pork katsu over the katsu curry. We accidentally ordered the katsu instead of the curry version one night and have never looked back! The pork cutlet is huge. I always buy 2 x serves of salmon avocado maki sushi and pinch a few pieces of pork cutlet from my partner. The sushi is approx $3.50-$3.70 for a serve (1 roll or 4 maki pieces). Don't forget to pick up some wasabi and soy sauce - mix the two together for a delicious sushi dipping sauce. I could eat Japanese for dinner every night. Open at lunch time and dinner until late. Closed Sundays. Dine in or takeaway options. Friendly and prompt service.

Great little Japanese restauraunt that offers great food with incredible value. Our group of four was able to get the $45 platter as an entree between the four of us, and then a main each on top of that. It was almost too much for us to eat, all for the around $20 each. Quality was excellant. A must visit for anyone looking for good value japanese in the southside.
Eekimus
Not sure why reviews are so good. Ordered the salmon roll and 2 eel rice dishes only to have them being our trable the wrong order (chicken?) then tell us they could only make 1 eel rice dish. At least they apologized. Portion sizes were small, service was ok, but still had to ask for water and wasabi- which disappointingly came out of small takeaway packets. I guess for most 'Australians' the restaurant is fine but there are other much better places on the south side for Japanese food at affordable prices. One visit is enough. Thanks.
Urban Taster
Tasty well priced Japanese. I'm a big fan of the sushi here- especially the crispy chicken with cabbage (I'm sure I got the name of that wrong but it's very tasty!). Never too packed to get a table/ fast service/ yet a nice quiet, enjoyable dinner. I quite like the decor. Will definitely be back.
Fiona
Food is as good as any Japanese restaurant in Brisbane. Price is reasonable and I think is the main reason I go back.
Timbo
Excellent, a little-known gem.. Our group of 9 thoroughly enjoyed their meals, great decor, nice casual atmosphere. Fusion sushi rolls were outstanding, in particular the spider roll and double prawn. The karaage was the best I've ever had (even in Japan), very flavoursome and cooked perfectly. Also the Japanese chicken curries are excellent, much more flavoursome than the usual takeaway/food court curries. Will definitely be going back.
Anh Nguyen
Nice decor. Their Green tea icecream is fantastic :) okonomiyaki is pretty good. The dragon roll is OK, although tuna was a tad soggy and the eel was a little fatty. I love the decor
Billnu
Great food. Nice warm atmosphere. My family visited this restaurant a few weeks age, on the great reviews they had on here and also a friends recommendation. The moment we walked into this tiny restaurant, we thought the feeling was warm and inviting.

It is a mum and dad operation by the looks of things, and we thought that maybe the service would be a little slow. Not so. Our order was taken fairly quickly.

We ordered a variety of entrée and main courses. They came out promptly and all tasted wonderful. I would recommend the curry. Not too over spiced, yet incredibly tasty.

Would recommend whole heatedly

We have now been there 3 times. Each time has been great.
Rob
Okonomiyaki - Yumm!. Cute, quirky, tiny, local restaurant selling great Okonomiyaki! Good service. No stress experience.
Craig Leonard
Really good. Unassuming from outside, yet really cute and quirkily decorated. The food was superb especially the Lion King and the Karaage. Baked sushi? Who'd of thought? Totally awesome.
BigCarrot
You'll be saying 'Damit'!. Large portions and maybe that's why it's so over-priced. The strangest sushi I have ever had including the cheaps ones they sell at foodcourts. The rice was gluggy, the fish was very VERY thinly sliced and drenched in a creamy, sweet, bright yellow sauce! Have never walked away from a meal of sushi feeling so unsatisfied.
ElsewhereBriefly
As previous reviews have said, generous portions, and well-priced. The purists might say, however, that the nigiri pieces are too big. Too much rice topped by overly large slices of fish meant that one would not be able to fit the piece into one's mouth..unless one were an anomalous giant.
The fusion rolls were a nice enough combination of flavours, but a bit loosely rolled, so they tended to fall apart as one bit into them. The lion king and spider rolls are the ones to try.
No problems with service.
The decor is simple, but suits.
The music, however was incongruous. Techno music, even if played at low level, still doesn't suit for people trying to enjoy a meal.
All in all, alright enough as a value for money proposition.
Miss Maple
Dami, you have done it again :). We come here because of the great food. The generous portion sizes and the prices give you excellent value for your meal. We have a special dish we always order which is the Tori Karaage Don but with extra curry sauce on top, so good!!! Its a cute little place so if you are planning to come during peak hours it is recommendable to make a reservation.
Carol CH
Not so good. We just had soft shell crab sushi and teriyaki noodles today.
It was just average. The customer service wasnt that nice. I wouldnt go there again.
Georgia
Friendly staff, the sushi is always fresh! One if my favorites :)

DONT GO THERE. Just got back from Dami... DAMB idea going there. Horrible tasting sushi, over-use of crab stick, just plain shopping-center-food-court-grade-badness. Please avoid at all costs, dont believe the hype. Its owned and run by koreans, it never works, Japanese are the masters at creating their own food.

Yum yum! Authentic service, food and style. Definitely worth a visit!! :)

Freidnly service, not so great food. My partner and I went here after reading positive reviews on Urbanspoon. I ordered springrolls and pork katsu and my partner ordered sushi and a vegetable pancake-like dish. The springrolls were yummy but very, very oily so it your first bite was really yummy then all you could taste with all.

The pork katsu was alright, nice and crispy but the sauce was very disappointing! I'm pretty sure it was tomatoe sauce with a bit of soy sauce in it. :( the rice we had was really dry as well.

we ordered the cheesecake and green tea icecream. they first slice of cheescake we had was stale/off. the second one wasn't fresh but was better.

the waitress was very sweet and polite i think it was more the chef was having a really bad night. probably wont bother to go back after this experience but the service and atmosphere are quite nice.

Great little restaurant. Fancy interior decorations and very Japanese tradition. The menu was well described. The price is okay.. The portion was decent amount. Customer service Id give a 6/10 but I guess that's the Japanese tradition. I would recommend this restaurant- good local restaurant
Jaymeguts
Satisfying. Very cute, little hole-in-the-wall restaurant. The food is always delicious and well-priced. Service is a little lacking at times, but in general a satisfying meal out!

Great night out. Read the reviews on urbanspoon and thought we'd try this out for our 9y.o. son's birthday - found the food great, excellent value, decor was nice and service good. Would definitely go here again. We all had more food than we could eat (starters, main and dessert) and with BYO it came in at about $25 a head for everything - excellent value for a week night out. Octopus balls were scrumptious and the sizzling teriyaki salmon was very generous :) There was steady T/A traffic all night too (always a good sign). Only wish we lived closer and we could get T/A Japanese too - there isn't enough of this around.

Not my favourite. We went to Dami Japanese Restaurant last night after we read great reviews here.
We had karaage, pork curry and lion king sushi rolls.
All we could taste from super small karaage and sushi were the heavy sauces. I do enjoy sushi with the sauces like mayonaise or BBQ sauce as well as traditional Japanese sushi but definitely not this one. Also according to their menu sushi rolls are supposed to have crab meat but that was seafood stick.
They were quite busy so obviously they are popular though. I'm Japanese and my husband has a tongue of Japanese and we are not going back.
FoodBlah
Curry Sauce!. I've been here 2 times with mates, both times I ordered the same thing. If you like curry sauce, and if you like karaage, do yourself and favour and order the Tori Karaage Don with curry sauce. If normally doesn't come with it, but its a dollar extra well spent!
Nikky Cassidy
Yum. I had the Curry Noodle (Chicken) it was very yummy but the menu said vegitables. I don't really classify a tiny sprinkle of frozen peas and corn. But hey it only cost $9.00. $9.00!! for dinner!! It would have been a awesome meal if it had some real veggies.
Jim
So glad i discovered it!. I live about two minutes' walk from Dami. Great, because it meant I was blown away when I discovered it's casual charm and cheap menu options. Terrible, because now I go there all the time. Too often, really. But it's just so delicious, and cheap and consistent. And they do takeaway. And it's BYO. Love everything about it.
Dkerle
Not bad but not authentic Japanese. I read a review on here that said their chirashi sushi was more of a Korean dish. Well, probably because the place run by Koreans, not Japanese. Service friendly, decor nice. Two out of our three dishes weren't the ones we ordered, not completely wrong but not right. I didn't try the sashimi, that may be good.

I lived in Japan a long time and have eaten at many Japanese restaurants since being back, sadly this does not rate highly compared to authentic Japanese run places.

Great place if you are after somewhere cozy and reasonably priced.

Chicken and cream cheese sushi, who would have thought. Surprisingly tasty. And can't go past the sizzles!! Delicious!! The seafood pancake is a great dish too :)

Really good. This is a great little place for dining in or take away.
Love the omelette and soft shell crab

After reading positive reviews about this place I decided to go there for my birthday dinner with my family. It was quite busy and lucky we booked a table. The service was slow in the beginning but once you ordered, the food came reasonably quickly. There were only 2 staff and one was constantly stuck behind the counter from take away orders. The assorted sashimi was great and not too expensive. The fried noodles were quite yum too but nothing special while the curry was the same. The spider was good. This place has a very nice decor and it's such a cosy little environment. Overall, it was very lovely and nothing special but it's all good. Only thing is to make sure you are patient when ordering and the food will come out. Definitely going back sometime :)
Tim
Sooooo good. Reviews in the website helped us to find this restaurant. Never seen such a small restaurant that busy but it was worth waiting until we could grab a table. Want to find out if they have secret ingredient for the curry with rice. It looked usual curry but I could taste something different ....and I loved it...
Jonathan King
Sat for 20 minutes and never received a menu or got service so we walked out. The place was not even busy. Will not be going back even if the food is supposed to be tasty

Give it a miss. The restaurant is pleasantly set out and thankfully we made a booking as the tables filled quickly.

I ordered a chicken katsu and my husband ordered the chirashi sushi.

My chicken katsu was disappointing - it was thin and I could taste the oil used to try the katsu (not sure why they didn't use panko crumbs, but anyway). It reminded me of the fast food katsu's you can get in a food court.

My husband's chirashi sushi had fresh sashimi in it, which was nice. However it was served on a bed of lettuce with rice. This is not chiashi sushi - this is more of a Korean dish. Cold shredded lettuce doesn't go with sushi rice.

The food was not memorable. I will not return and would rather travel a bit further for better Japanese food.
Tj
Yum!. This has become our go to place on a Friday night, everything is beautiful and fresh and the service is wonderful!

Great Experience. We recently dined at this small but quaint Japanese restaurant. I am a fan of the Chicken Katsu Curry at Wagamama and this dish at $9 a bowl ($18+ at Wagamama) was every bit as tasty. The service was friendly , fast and exceptional value for money. Will definately be back!

Tasty Japanese Dining with Value. After an awkward start to the evening, when we walked in for our reservation at 7pm on the dot and found all the tables full, we still managed to knock back a three course meal in under an hour. And all the food was cooked to a high level that belied the extremely economical prices on offer.
We started with the Gyoza and, although the oil might have been slightly on the hot side when cooked, we couldn't complain about the four tasty morsels for the $4.50 price.
Before we had managed to get through these the pleasant young waiter lad was back with a huge plate of Salmon Sashimi. The salmon was well cut and had the melt in your mouth aspect you expect from sashimi when done properly. The only fault was the packet wasabi, which never compares to a good home made version.
The dishes kept coming fast and furious, although the Spicy Beef Fusion Roll was not as furious as it could have been. The beef was definitely tasty but it didn't have the spicy hit that was expected based on its name.
By the time our fourth and final dish arrived we still had parts of the other three left, which is testament to the fabulous service in the completely full restaurant. The Tori Karaage Don didn't have as much of the sweet soy based sauce I am used to from this dish, but the chicken itself was cooked to perfection and the Japanese mayo was a great addition that added that sweetness I expected from Karaage Don I have had previously.
Although all the meals were of a generous size compared to many Japanese restaurants we still managed to find a little bit of room to squeeze in some Black Sesame Seed Ice Cream, which had great flavour but texturally wasn't as creamy as it could have been.
We will definitely be back to try more of the vast and well priced menu on offer at Dami, but we will be sure to book, as the place was full to the brim the whole time we were there.

Fab Japanese Cheap Eat. Discovered this place by accident. I don't write reviews on all places visited but this one is such value for money it deserves accolades. Cute and simple decor with a limited but satisfying menu that surprises. Don't expect exotic presentation and is not for fastidious Japanese dining tastes but wow they provide very tasty wholesome foods at great prices. Has become our "local" cheap eat. Spicy beef roll entree and barbecue spicy pork main my favourites.

Cute little place. Been here twice and what a blessing for the area! This part of the south-side lacks places like this, a cute, cosy, welcoming place with modern class and a decent offering of an ethnic cuisine to go with it.

Personally, I think the sushi is pretty good, not really top-notch presentation compared to other established places, but their flavour and filling combinations are interesting and sometimes a little left-field (take their cream cheese sushi rolls), which keeps things interesting.

However, some of their other dishes are rather plain and ordinary, like their unagi don and other rice or noodle offerings. Presentation of these meals aren't brilliant and rather disappointing given the feel this place gives. I think this is where improvement should be made.

Overall, stick to their sushi and you'll be leaving happy. Their service is brilliant (the lady remembered me by my second visit) and the place since it has opened has been busy pretty much every time I go past.

Excellent. This place is a little gem. The food is exceptional. Best sushi i've had in Brisbane, especially given how cheap it is. The Chicken Katsu Curry is delicious and what a bargain for only $9! My partner and I ate in and we ordered 2 entrees, 2 mains and 2 desserts and it came to $41!

Fresh - Authentic Japanese Food. Have been a couple of times and the food is absolutely beautiful - so fresh. Definitely recommend - we love this place - great service so glad it is a local. My son's favourite is the green tea icecream...

Dami is a little Japanese place that fits under the category of the humble and authentic Japanese restaurant. The menu wasn’t pages long, but what they offered was unique and a change from the everyday variations provided around the Sunnybank area.

The service is very friendly and warm, which is quite common through Japanese restaurants. The food came out quite quickly, and it was clear that everything was made to order. The unagi that sat atop the dragon roll was nice and hot when served, and the chicken roll was too, which was masked in a crunchy topping that was drizzled with teriyaki sauce. The double prawn roll was delicious too, with different textures present throughout all three sushi plates we ordered.

My pork katsu ($11.00) came out quickly as well and was presented with a large serving of BBQ sauce, rice, and mayonnaise dressed cabbage. It was slightly overcooked and the pork inside was thin but fortunately not dry.
