Have not be back nearly two years so checked it out on last Monday night. Maybe it was too early before 6:00pm, it was not busy at all. We comfortably took the time to place our orders and select the seats this time. We noticed that the head chef was not working on the night but production is satisfied. We ordered the raman with spicy Guokai soup with half serving of noodle + extra soft shell crab & bamboo shoot. The other raman with Miso to go with gyoza.
As we mentioned, both raman were tasteful and so as the side dishes. Production rate and service are both consistently good. This raman den should be our most favorite one.

My favourite ramen in Brisbane. Very authentic, not just food wise but service wise.

Seating is tight in their Runcorn location, however that is true Japanese style. All broth flavours delicious. Definite value for money when compared to other ramen stores and chains.

A cosy little establishment with lots of choices for your ramen adventure.

The black garlic salt variant was a new taste for me, having only had standard salt ramen before. The broth certainly packed a punch. Such depth of flavour; I haven't had better in Brisbane.

The noodles were not as juicy as I would like, and I didn't enjoy the pork gyozas. However these are not enough to deter me from coming back. I will highly recommend.

The staff were pleasant and helpful when ordering.

Love it!
The spicy ramen is ACTUALLY SPICY.. although most of the time I go for the tsukemen! I appreciate how they have so much choices when it comes toppings!
Second favorite would be the black garlic variety..
4 because the place is so tiny! I know I'm a big person, but damn.. i think they only sit 15?

Great bowl of ramen. Tasty deep flavoured broth pair with a light textured ramen. However the size of the meal was on the smaller side.

Really delicious ramen!!! I got the gyokai, which was really flavourful. I love how you can get free noodles as well! Service was amazing. The cashier was so friendly and attentive. She even gave us a Christmas gift, a voucher for a free drink on our next visit. I'm definitely coming back.

People say that this is one of the best ramen in Brisbane, i seriously confirm that it’s true hehe ! i love love love ramen and actually my goal is to try out all the ramen shops in Brisbane. If you have any recommendations pls let the comment down below. Service was fast, the broth was so nice , little bit salty than i expected 👍 i ordered Salt and my friend ordered Soy! Actually both broth taste pretty similar and delicious. Price is acceptable for dinner ☺️ We also ordered extra chasiu and marinated egg. The table next to us order takoyaki which is octopus ball and it looks (and smells) supper good too, i def will try takoyaki next time!

One downside is that the shop in Runcorn is really small! I think it can make up maximum only 15 people. That’s very inconvenient because you just eat quickly (you won’t have time to chitchat) and then give up the seat for other people.

Very small and busy venue! I love Ramen, so i popped in on Sunday evening with some friends for a fix!
The service was prompt, I got the Shio Karamen, which is salty and spicy, and the flavour was delicious, my friends got the Soy Karamen, and the Soy Black Garlic, which i got to try. Both were tasty, but i think i chose wisely, as my Ramen was my favourite. :D Win

I got some pork gyoza to go along with it as i usually do. I added more noodles into my broth, and after my 2nd serve combined with the gyoza, i was pleasantly stuffed!

First time Trying Genkotsu, and i loved it!

I love the broth here!!  Tastes very rich and flavourful.  They have quite a few variations of soups (salt, soy, miso, fish) but nothing will disappoints you :)  I personally like to add black garlic to my serve.  I would find them more authentic if their soup was hotter and the noodles boiled harder.  Said that, I love this place overall and recommend to ramen lovers.

TL;DR: Pretty much what would be wanted from a ramen bar. This is a step back to basics, without any flash or flamboyance, and just simply going for a good quality, warming bowl of the famous noodle soup. Service is pretty good as well.

Within Runcorn Plaza, among the places that simply shout out that they are the place to be, like the meek, introverted goth kid on the playground, there is one other outlet here that is a contrast from the rest of them in a number of ways. Going right inside the doorway, diners are invited to a cosy, very warm interior were what they see is what they get. Comfort food in the form of ramen, done to its most efficient and effective best.

Getting to end of the working year, it was all a case of what to do on the final day - especially since that final day more or less acted as a half-day of work. Going around the workplace, it was all a matter of what people were planning to do, and it started off as a bit of an in-joke not being a drinker that I would hit the bar - a ramen bar to be exact. Eventually, that eventuated into searching through the best places to get a bowl of ramen, and while a few were in the nearby streets, to get the best kind of experience, going out a ways into the Styx was the go. All that mattered was getting there afterwards, and here we are.

From the size of the place, especially sandwiched in between a number of other giants, it would be fairly easy to miss this one even if a keen eye was being kept out for it. I would not be surprised if this was a janitor's closet in a past life. Seating inside can be pretty tight - there is not a large amount of seats here - when it gets busy, as with all ramen bars that are worth their salt in peak times. This was, however, not a peak time, with a couple of people already lapping up their soup. Among the benches there, one right at the edge of the small kitchen, about everything that is needed for enjoying the meal is right there for clients to collection - the spoons, the chopsticks, toothpicks, and various seasonings. All around is a red hue on the walls, and some low hanging light give it a small bit of ambiance.

What little service there is here is still polite, though it come with a touch of it being impersonal. Given the atmosphere and the set up of the place, that in itself is a bit of a given. Walk in the door, take the order, and they give you a number (sometimes with words written on them for a bit of a laugh) so you can be seated and await the meal. Even with all of that being said, they win many brownie points out for the sheer efficiency and lightning speed in which clients are served. Also though, I will give a shout out to the small gesture where I had the number given next to me, and the guy behind the counter put it on the top counter so he could see - made sense, and thanks for the correction.

As it can be told by the name, the offerings more or less being and end with a range of ramen. That, and some little side nibbles to compliment the order. The selection that they have is slightly bigger than average, plus the concoctions go beyond the general pork options. First up there is the classical versions - miso, shio, and shoyu with a fish one added on - then there are some other classic ones with the choice of base as follows, and various twists on the menu to behold, finally rounding up the ramen selection a bunch of special ones with different sorts of meat and whatnot.

It doesn't end there, with a small selection each of extra items to customise the ramen soup even further, and a few bits of izakaya for a little nibble on the side. That, and a few mini rice bowls for on the side, and to drink there is the general range of sodas and iced teas from the can.

Always liking to go something a bit different when I can, it was after juggling a few in the back of my head, with the one that eventually won out being the soft shell crab ramen, and an extra of some dried seaweed. This was well worth the wait after so many days, as it hit all of the right notes. The broth was rich, thick and slightly salty, the noodles cooked in the soup were done to the right consistency, slightly chewy and still retaining their texture. There were some mushrooms from memory within the broth, absorbing the soup effectively, plus the usual garnish of an egg was nice as always - the yolk just beginning to harden, it was moreish. However, it has not been forgotten the centerpiece of it all - the soft-shell crab. This rarely ever goes down poorly, and here was no exception. It was like eating smooth butter, sweet and moreish going down a treat. The flesh was soft and tender, the batter around it was thin and flavourome, and it just got better by soaking in the soup. Add onto that, the seaweed in which - for a reason that is hard to exactly explain - was the cherry on top of it all.

Plus, to give it that much more of a review, a little side went on as well. Having to choose between several gyozas, plus a couple of other bona fide hits with Japanese eating (notably takoyaki and chicken karage) was bit of a tricky choice. In the end though, the one that wins out by a mere head was the octopus balls. Duly noted, what might have given it that edge was the cheese variety - naturally the ultimate choice. As usual, there was the distinct deep flavour from the sauce, along with the hot and chewy octopus meat, and a creamy center to round it all up. On top of it, the cheese had a bit of bite to it, and it went fairly well with the sauce.

For the 4.0 score that is here, from this showing I like to indicate here that it might not be the best, and highest quality ramen that is around town, though it still manages to do quite well. If there was anything that made Genkotsu Ramen win over the solid 4.0 score, it all had to do with the way it was set up - ironically docking it points as well as giving it its character. The soup was first and foremost the focus, allowing the cooks to really hone in on making a tasty and filling entry that is worth a-steal (way cheaper than inner city outlets, a big advantage there), but it had to do with the setting. Going for the rustic and cosy aesthetics, it got the right atmosphere done pat. Admittedly, it is slightly shitty since it is easy to bump your neighbour's elbow, but more or less that is part of its charm - how straightforward the ordeal is, and nothing else matters when the soup is this good.

this is the best ramen in brisbane! we are visiting once a week! soup base is so good!! Not too heavy, and just right for the noodle. The shop is quite small for a dine in though, not kids friendly.

Simply oishii! Big bowl of tummy filling lip smacking ramen. Love the wide array of choices and extras. Free extra noodles are bomb! However, the manner of seating is almost claustrophobic. I know this is a small establishment and ramen joints are often packed tight and close knit, but hey I don't wanna clack elbows with the diner next to me. Overall, tasty tasty stuff. I left with a contented sigh of satisfaction, and only a mild bout of claustrophobia.

Genkotsu Ramen is rare place if would like to re-experience traditional Ramen culture just like what you have had in Japan. Lots of people easily found Japan Ramen's soup over-salted, we should say it's not salty but Over-Rich soup. Only because it's been cook long-time and to enhance taste of noodle.

Lot's of Ramen restaurant in Brisbane usually will turn the flavour a bit less-Rich (salty). But than it is not original flavour any.

Genkotsu Ramen is the one of few that keep faith and keep the traditional recipe and that is why I welling drive from Newstead to Runcorn for a bowl of noodle soup. (Please allow 15-20 mins for a seat... they are normally very busy.)Alternately, You can ask less salty (less rich) soup while you order your noodle.

Hope this helps.

I have been here many times and it is one of my favourite ramen restaurant.
It is a very small restaurant with only few seats and accepts cash only.
The ramen is very similar to the ones in Japan (Salty and oily) but very rich in flavour. I sometimes do scoop out the oil and add a little water to the bowl when the staff is not looking :p
Price wise it is very reasonable and extra noodles is free for big eaters.

Normally eat at Hakataya Ramen but decided to give them a try. A lot more choices available at this ramen place, but I think it over complicates the decision process. Ramen was alright but the broth was no where as good as Hakataya. It was very filling though due to the free extra noodles. Soft shell crab was wonderfully cooked and crispy. Would go back just for the crab.

Had ramen cravings last night and wanted something different to Hakataya (don't get me wrong, i love that place too!) When we walked in, the actual seating area itself is small with a counter area as well as table seating, VERY traditional Japanese style store as I am part Japanese and have frequented many ramen shops over there. To order you line up and pay, then find a seat, again, during peak hours, good luck! I have seen in the past a lineup outside the door before.

Food came very quick and looked very similar to the menu photo's

I ordered the miso ramen and my friend got the kara (spicy) ramen in miso flavour. We also ordered additional sides of karaage and chuka wakame.

My miso ramen did not disappoint! very strong flavors and noodles were cooked perfect with a chewy texture. One thing people may find a bit different with the ramen broth here is that the soup is a little thick and oily, again, personal preference, and for me I did enjoy it.

My friend said his ramen was the same but for him it was not spicy enough, even after adding the chili oil and flakes, but he does love spicy.

The karaage was freshly cooked hot and juicy, honestly was delicious!!

total cost of our meal was $32.50, you can pay either cash or card.

Staff were Japanese and very friendly and polite

Overall will definitely alternate with this place and Hakataya, my top 2 ramen joints :)

Stinking hot day & very jet lagged...what to do to satisfy a hungry (&angry) stomach? RAMEN!

This is my third visit to Genkotsu Ramen and the bowl of happiness suitable for a >30 degree day is Goma Ramen: a sesame vinegar based cold noodle ramen with chopped cha shu, sweet corn, green shallot, 1/2 egg, crab sticks & seaweed.

Flavor is well balanced with a refreshing hint of sourness from the rice vinegar sesame sauce. The chopped cha shu simply melts in your mouth with no dodgy porky "stink" what so ever. Noodle texture was just right with good amount of chewiness and egg flavor. For the hungry boys & girls don't forget the free bowl of add on (cold) noodle!

Love a good summer day Ramen! You wont regret trying it!

I consider this the best Ramen to be had around the Sunnybank area. Authentic little restaurant. Though it's more a diner than a restaurant to sit around in. This is a noodle bar for a quick stop and eat. The other Ramen chain the area doesn't hold a candle to this place

One of the best ramen I've had in Brisbane, better than Hakataya (though they are different styles of ramen so this could just be a preference). Had the black garlic and it is as good as everyone says! However, I do also have to agree that the broth is particularly salty.

This is by far my favourite ramen place, I love the chewiness of the noodle and a thick broth which give so much flavour. Have tasted all the basic flavour but still love the Gyokai (fish broth) flavour the most, full of umami flavour with the extra bonito flakes on it. They gave extra noodle free, normally I would order it and add in at the start when I start eating as the extra noodle has no flavour so best to add it in while the soup is still hot and still at a soakable level 😁 Shop is a bit small but cozy, just give some times to wait incase there is a queue as ramen doesn't take too long to finish. Remember to get the card stamped and they are giving out double points on Mon-Thurs :)

Been here on several occasions and food has always been good and pretty consistent. However the broths seem to be a little salty. Had the black garlic ramen nice and garlicky but too salty same with the dipping style ramen, tsukemen. And no, I'm not just salty AF.

Have tried coming here in the past but due to being too many people decided to go elsewhere. Finally came at a reasonable time prior to getting too busy. It is a pretty small restaurant seating probably less than 20 ppl, even having come as a group of 10 we sat in two groups. Had the black garlic gyokai and I have to say I really enjoyed the flavours of this ramen! Ordered it because i thought it was different and loved it a lot. Bonus here is can order free extra noodles but it was enough for me just for the one bowl. Friends had two.

This is one of my go-to places when I don't have my kid. This place is yummy but in true Ramen place style, it is pretty squishy. They did manage to squeeze our pram in once in off-peak time but we do have the smallest pram (almost a stroller really) on the market. There's probably only one spot for it and once its there, others can't get out of their seats.

I like ordering their Fish-based broth since I don't know anywhere else that does it. Also recommend the Black Garlic flavour Ramen. Really flavoursome and affordable! A lot more flavours than Hakataya (not as cheap of course). Parking is not too hard inside Runcorn Plaza. As usual don't forget the free ramen refill to make the most of the complex broth :)

Highly recommend if you're in the area. Love the interior and cosy style of this place.

There was a bit of a wait for a table seeing that the restaurant is quite small, however the friendly staff take your order as soon as you arrive therefore once seated, you meal is ready very quickly which was impressive. We ordered the Charshu Ramen with Soy broth, however their most popular appeared to be the Soft Shell Crab Ramen with everyone around us ordering that. Will definitely return!

You can choose if you want Shio, soy, fish or miso base with each ramen. They have a good selection of side dishes too like gyoza, karaage, soft shell crab and more if you are feeling extra hungry. Genkotsu Runcorn is my favorite ramen in Brisbane and is comparable to some of the great ramen I've eaten throughout Japan over the years. Authentic Japanese flavors by Japanese staff in a cosy Japanese-style atmosphere, the thick Shoyu soup is my go-to, loaded with charsui pork on top is unbeatable. A free noodle refill (kaedama) is available if the mountain of egg noodles isn't already enough.

Great value.

A very good Ramen restaurant and probably the best in Brisbane, Genkotsu really delivers. Simple, cheap and great decor, you can't really ask for more.

Went here for lunch today and the service and ambiance was great. I ordered the charshu miso ramen. It was filled to the brim with charshu - which melted in your mouth however the noodles were a bit too thin. And I found the broth to be a little too salty and thick as well for my liking. Overall, it was a ok experience. I think I'll stick to my beloved Hakataya ramen for now.

Fine dining is fine and nice but there's always the comfort staples that one refers back to--after all, fine dining is only fine because it's a treat. There's nothing like a hot bowl of ramen filled to the brim with umami, rich broth and topped with goodies like an egg with a gooey centre and fatty chewy pork. Best of all it's fast, its cheap and there's no decorum or waiting to be had. There's no insecurity with eating alone either though I rarely do now, but hubby did point out--it's perfectly acceptable to be eating a bowl of ramen by yourself (earphones in ) elbow to elbow with a stranger. Maybe that's a key to why there seems to be an increase in popularity for ramen places--lots of singles needing a place to eat out by themselves.

[Updated 25/1/16] They have changed their noodles somewhat recently and it certainly lifts the quality of the dish. I should note that the texture of this new noodle is chewier and just tastes even better. Had Cold Noodles with Sesame Dressing, and Miso Black Garlic Charsiu men. Both were brilliant and extremely satisfying. They also now offer free extra noodles. Great job. We feel that they deserve +0.5.

[Original] I personally find ramens here are the closest to what I had in Japan. Each dish has its own characteristics; different combinations of soup, noodles, and toppings. A lot of people prefer Hakataya to this place. I do like them both but skills-wise and authenticity-wise I have to give special credit to Genkotsu. They offer wider options, soups are richer, toppings are much more sophisticated than Hakataya's. If Hakataya's menu takes you 4 days to try everything, you will probably need more than 3 weeks to try Genkotsu's whole menu.

Definitely one of the better Ramen joints in Brisbane at the moment. It's a really small restaurant though, so maybe only holds around 16 people at time. This means you may have to wait a little to get a table at busy periods. But the wait is usually pretty quick as the service is fast. The broth is fantastic, has a nice breadth of flavor. The noodles are softer than the ones at Hakataya Ramen, which I prefer. Pork is delicious, and thicker cut (which some may like or not). Loved the bamboo and the egg, and its well priced.

Ramen is one of the favorite food I would like to have in winter. Have to say, Genkotsu Ramen is really doing a good job. Compare with their major competitor, the soup base is much more full-bodied, and the taste for me is more authentic than other ramen shop in town. They use typical ramen noodle which has a wheat flavor when you taste it slowly and deeply. Plenty of side dishes you could chose, from deep fried chicken, Gyoza to some Japanese cold dishes. It is really hard to imagine they are all from this tiny kitchen. Could be squishy as it is a small shop and they only provide less than 20 seats, but who cares, right? We are all lining up for those beautiful things in our life, isn't it?

I absolutely loved the ramen at Genkotsu Ramen. Since my first visit, I've been planning another trip with either Marc or my mum and dad. I just wish it wasn't so far away. The ramen is inexpensive, filling and so, so delicious. Although it's a popular eatery, don't be discouraged by the queue because it moves relatively quickly. As winter hits, I hope I'll be eating ramen regularly. It truly is soul-warming food.

Finally a decent ramen shop in Brisbane!. I had a Black Garlic Ramen with salt flavor and it was great! I wouldn't say that it's as good as the ramen shops in Japan, but I'm glad that the standard is getting higher in Brisbane. Authentic noodles at a great price, lots of options, generous toppings. It'd be nice if they have options for hardness of noodles as well.

Good ramen! Enjoyed!. Love their ramen. Noodles cooked just right, not too hard, not too soft! I like their consistency, went there 2 days in a row and quality stays the same. If you don't enjoy salty food, don't order soy base soup. I like the Miso Genkotsu, very rich flavour soup. Karaage is nice and crunchy but can use a bit more flavor.

I personally prefer Genkotsu over Hakataya, because is better, good service, cheaper, more choices, more sides with the noodles and is indoor (no fly disturbance). Will definitely recommend to others.

Authentic ramen.. Authentic noodles at a great price. This is how a ramen restaurant should be. Good consistent noodles, hot rich soup, tasty egg cooked with a yellow orange yolk, soft generous pork slices served quick as it should be with right pricing. Other ramen places should learn from this place.

Last week, we went to Genkotsu Ramen in Runcorn. It took us a while to find the place as it is actually quite a small shop hidden at the end of the parking lot.

With most new restaurants, we usually prepare ourselves by setting low expectations. This way we do not become too disappointed if it does not meet our standards. However with this Ramen place, we were pleasantly surprised, and it far exceeded our expectations. Upon arrival for lunch, we noticed a line already forming outside. This line did not last very long as we noticed that each customer was served quickly – definitely a sign of a good ramen place. Ramen is a fast food in Japan and therefore service should be fast!

One of the best japanese ramen I've tried in Brisbane - looks like Taro's Ramen finally has a worthy opponent. Furnished like a traditional japanese ramen shop, the ramen here tastes as authentic as it looks. Unfortunately, it is also quite small and cozy like the ramen shops found in Japan alleyways.

The highlight of the dish of course, was its soup, for soup is the soul of a bowl of ramen. The shoyu soup was strong, and rich and creamy. I could definitely taste difference in the soup being cooked for an extended period of time, and it definitely sets it apart from other ramen shops, making it one of the best in Brisbane.
