Aussie burger as large as Australia itself!. Wow! I have never seen a burger so big! It contained all of the four food groups… and then some! So delicious and so filling! I didn’t need to eat breakfast the next day!
It was a Wednesday evening when my partner and I happened to be downtown and after a while, were in need of somewhere to eat. With our ever trusty coupon book with us, we found a 2-for-1 voucher on any mains at the Beach House Bar & Grill. Since we were close to the Myer Centre, we didn’t have far to go.
Getting into the restaurant was a bit of an effort. Lots of stairs, very crowded and you have to pick up your own order, makes this place not accessible for people in wheelchairs or with mobility devices.
The Beach House has a nice patio overlooking Elizabeth Street, that is, if you’re lucky to get a table by the edge. As they were all taken, we had the limited choice of sitting at cafeteria-style seating or sharing a higher up table with bar stools. We decided on the cafeteria-style tables as this would give us a bit more privacy. The music playing was so loud that it was hard to hear anything and finding a quieter table was impossible to do. (Not a good place for those wearing hearing aids!)
After my partner and I yelled at each other for a while – it wasn’t in a bad way – we both chose the same menu item. Beach House has a great selection of food and a decent range of prices: Their Light Meals (burgers, wraps, sandwiches) ranged from $13.90-17.90, Main Meals (rice, pasta, fish, chicken) from $18.90–23.90 and Flame Grill (steak, chicken) from $22.90–29.90, with an array of seafood choices as well.
In that my partner and I don’t often share dishes as this tends to lead to yelling – not in a good way – we both ordered the Maroochy Works Burger ($15.90), which I would call an “Aussie burger”.
My partner went up to order and returned with a noise/vibrating device that would go off when our meal was ready to be picked up. It was at that time we noticed that our cafeteria table was poorly marked with tiny reserved signs. As the seating was sparse we frantically started looking for another spot that was not directly under a speaker. Contemplating if we should just cancel our order and go elsewhere, a waitress walked by and we explained our dilemma. She said she’d help us find something and eventually she did. It was a high table with 6 seats, 3 of which were already preoccupied, and although the waitress had asked them, the patrons were definitely not happy to have us there. Well, that’s okay, as it works both ways.
While all of this was going on, our device went off and in all of the mass confusion, our waitress went and got our food for us! This was such a nice gesture and we greatly appreciated it!
Although we had ordered our burgers from the light meals section, there was no way this was a light meal! “Light” on the wallet maybe, but not “light” on the calories! This burger was massive! It was so big that I could only bite into its height by about half way, then I had to turn it upside down to complete getting all the way through it! There were so many generous toppings like egg, bacon, cheese, beets, tomatoes, lettuce, fried onion, etc. – and I’m sure I’m missing a few ingredients! Everything was fresh and flavourful! The burger pattie was 100% Wagyu beef and was definitely a homemade pattie. I was so impressed with this burger as this is how an Aussie burger should be, that I told my partner any time we have visitors from overseas we will be bringing them here!
If the size of the burger wasn’t enough, it came with chips, too! These chips were cut thicker and had a nice gold crispness on the outside and covered with the right amount of course salt! A must have if ever visiting this restaurant!
Quite surprisingly, I managed to eat the entire meal! The Maroochy Works Burger certainly is one that you can’t put down after picking up, so I just kept eating! It was truly fantastic and I’m so glad we chose the Beach House to eat at!
While we were there, a live singer with a guitar performed and this helped bring the volume down, but only slightly. I don’t know why restaurants feel the need to play music to the point it’s almost painful. The entire experience had been very enjoyable, but if I have one complaint, it’s that the music is too loud! Turn it down and let your patrons enjoy their conversations!
All in all, I found the Beach House was of great value and their food was wonderful! A vast range of dishes, there is certainly something for everybody! I also like the live music as it supports Brisbane’s local talent! I would recommend this restaurant for those who are big meat eaters as, after all, this is a grill place. I look forward to returning to this restaurant again especially when I’m significantly hungry and will arrive with a pair of earplugs!!
