Reviews Sols Breads

TL;DR: Anyone in Brisbane will know it, even if they are not aware of it. This Sol Breads has shown the way for many a year, with the healthier option in getting some bakery items. There is a hippy sort of image to West End, and this certainly will help that idea stay alive. The cafe does the next logical thing, and partner the fresh produce with equally fresh breakfasts. It is all in a calm, friendly, and relaxed environment that is essentially the West End vibe defined. A really good reason exists for why the Sol Cafe is still with us while many competitors went the way of the dodo.

You know it is an institution when the reputation of a place manages to go beyond its target audience. While the vegan diet has gotten more traction recently, the scene is not anything new. You could find a few places around this nape of the woods - Brisbane's West End.

Overall of these years, this has been present since I started so many years ago. That might not be so strange in itself, but this has been one of the big fixtures in West End which used to be my stomping grounds as well. Well, the case today is that I finally made it here - whether it was anywhere in my mind or not. We are talking none other than Sol Breads. Go to any fresh produce market around Brisbane, you are bound to see someone selling their products.

It was the usual business on Sunday, which is going out to get some breakfast. Also by the usual business, it meant one thing for my housemate. While I was essentially dead to the world, he walked into the room with the airhorn prepped and ready to blast. One big blast from the door and I was up and ready in less than five minutes.

He was shaking it up this week, trekking to West End this time around. You got to rotate it sometimes, to keep it fresh and not to run through all the places in one area. It wasn't in the main stretch but the back area. It came down to the usual razor edge of two places, and since it was way more welcoming Sol Bread's won out in the end.

A level of customer service that you know will be good from the get-go is when they first notice you at the door. What might be better yet is when you arrive just a bit early, since how they address that can and will make a degree of difference. Such was the case with the housemate and me.

There is both the cafe and the actual bakery at this location. The cafe opens just a bit earlier as opposed to the bakery. Neither of us was aware, and it was a great perp to the morning. As per usual, I was looking inside and perusing the menu. It was to gander whether or not to give it a go.

In a situation such as this, customer service presents a big opportunity for the waitstaff. One of the best aspects of good customer services is how they react when a client steps right through the door. It is even better if they catch you before that happens, beckoning you inside. This came about when I was giving the menu outside the bakery a little read, and the owner of the cafe noticed the two of us looking interested. Upon that, he went and beckoned us into the cafe which was enough to settle down for something to eat.

It only looks like a corner shop from the outside; walking into Sol Breads reveals a small coffee shop/cafe kind of setting. This is the sort of architecture that works wonders with hot environments from its spaciousness and the way that it held in the breeze from the outside. They had a wonderful choice in music, opting for a mixture of lounge music, jazz, and a general relaxing vibe. What was best about the setting was a hidden gem, the side door leading to a garden.

Saying that this is a vegan place might not be entirely correct. If you are a meat-eater or like the eggs, they are still present in a small way. Let's just say it is one of the easiest locations around town to score something healthy, and not struggle too much as a vegan. A lot of the menu is decidedly simple, focuses much on fresh produce and ensuring that it is healthy. They have got to go against that preconceived notion.

Much of the fare is hot, along with one or two colder treats. From what I can remember, they have a range of sweet treats in the cabinet, but if not they would certainly be available in the bakery section along with their famous variety of bread.

Getting onto their drinks menu, the main foot forward is both tea and coffee. Dedicated care is done with both - as we have Cleanskins coffee for their brew and beans, and loose-leaf tea from Mayde as the tea leaves, and a rare third dedication with chai tea from a company purely dedicated to chai. With the cold stuff, they have pressed juices, flavoured waters, cold coffee, milkshakes along with their ilk, and smoothies.

The coffee machine was ready to go first, with the kitchen soon to open. It was a hot day outside, so few things sounded as inviting as a cold coffee. Ergo, one of those black and unsweetened was the first deal of business. Some coffee blends go better with the cold-press variety than others, and Cleanskins easily falls into the good category. It is something to do with its cleaner flavour and smoother texture. Plus, if any chemist cares to explain why, the coffee tends to get more concentrated and come across stronger upon getting chilled. That in itself is a bonus.

When it came time for the meal, I decided on the cauliflower, feta, and herb fritter. The fritter is pan-fried, with some house-roasted capsicum, and an almond dip, along with garlic-infused kale. As an extra, I ordered some ham on the side.

This was a delicious meal. I was having a hard time finishing it since the portion was so generous. That is not often that I say it, and even so, I don't like to mince words. Everything on the plate popped wonderfully. This is a visual treat to behold, and each bite is anything but bland. Even a big carnivore would be made to admit to that, side of ham on the plate or not.

You could easily detect what the vegetables were. The cooks also went for a slightly Indian approach in spicing them up a little bit. The cheese had melted somewhat, to the extent that feta can melt, plus the capsicum at that cooking stage where it was a little sweet. While I can't give any proper opinion about kale, what opinion I can give is that garlic will always liven up a dish. Rounding it all out, the portion of ham was generous and definitely tasted better than what could be brought from the store.

This cafe is not necessarily a scene that attracts me all that much, yet when credit due it ought to be due. A good start to any breakfast out is going to give some brownie points, to begin with, and that in turn, likely showcases care for other areas of quality. The garden vibe is lovely and relaxing, particularly from their choice of music playing. Being out in the open, having the quiet ambient noise plus the cool shade of the trees is a hard combination to beat. It essentially went out of its way to ensure good customer service, and that each client enjoys their stay to the fullest extent. When it comes to West End, there is a reason that some of their greatest hits have been around for decades - here is one of them.

Remember it was an impressive experience to have a cup of coffee here last time so made a trip for a brekkie.
Walked in and it was as busy as usual. I ordered a flat white and a plain croissant with jam & butter, then took a seat at the al fresco area.
It took a while for my orders presented on my table. Needless to say, the croissant did serve me well and so as the coffee. If the coffee came to the table quicker after it has been prepared, it would be much better and a full mark should be deserved.

Awesome feed at sol bakery and cafe this morning.

We got the pumpkin spiced waffles and the dukkah eggs. Packed full of flavour. Very nice presentation.

The staff we very friendly. Good service. Solid coffee. The only thing I would like to see is adding cold brew coffee to the menu.

This venue is a must for everyone!

One of the best meals I've had in Brisbane! The drinks are always good- chai latte, soy flat whites, & the special "Steve" (coco, espresso & chilis), the service is always friendly, & the worst thing about the place is how hard it is to decide from the delicious menu options. My friend and I split the Sol Benny with tofu scramble & the Greeny Nourish Bowl. The portions were so big & the flavors were even bigger! The Greeny Nourish Bowl was honestly one of the best meals I've had in Brisbane. The vegan benny sauce was also AMAZING. We can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu!

This is a great place for having a breakfast in the morning. The place is cozy and people are really nice.

I just took away a croissant and it tastes good (wish I can try more)

There are many other freshly baked breads and a breakfast menu. They should be worth a try!

Love Sol Breads vegan menu. So much variety- love the cheezeburger! The patty is fantastic, I bet you' wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you usually eat animal flesh! Delicious coffee too.

Best cafe in Brisbane. Generous portions and delicious food. So many original and creative vego/vegan options. Great service. They are now open Friday and Saturday nights for pizzas. Amazing!! About $20 each which is way too much for one person. So many great vego toppings and a really good base. They also have a gluten free base which I tasted and was really impressed with! Can sit in the back garden under the fairy lights and byo.

Went here for the vegan options and was VeRY pleased! I had the Vegan Benny.. absolutely delicous 🤤 With fluffy crispy croissant base, avo, kale, microherbs and the yummiest vegan holandaise-style sauce = Taste bud explosion of LOvE. My partner had the Tofu Scramble which he thoroughly enjoyed 👌🏽 I had a taste and flavours were amazing.. kind of maple 🍁.. very different, very delicious. Super chilled outdoor area down a pebbled walkway out back which was a great way to escape the crazy weekend crowd that was jam packed inside the shop.
Ohhh and I also had vegan Banana Bread = YUMMMMm!

The sit down food is fantastic in both the West End and Valley stores. Great place to grab a nutritious breaky. The staff are always lovely. The bread however.. I'm wondering what's changed. The chefs, recipe, ingredients? It's not the same.

I'm not usually one for organic products, but I've been a fan of SOL Breads since they partnered with Cherish Women's Cancer Foundation to raise money in support of cervical cancer research at the University of Queensland.

I popped in today to pick up a loaf of Pain De Campagne, but had to settle for an Organic Pugliese.  This crusty, rustic Italian loaf will go beautifully with pasta tonight and will make an excellent base (toasted of course) for Eggs Benedict in the morning.

My rating for SOL Breads is based on the bread alone - the menu at SOL Breads Cafe doesn't really excite me and is a bit overpriced.  The bread rates a 4, but the value is a 3.  Thus, 3.5 overall.

Lovely staff, lively but relaxed inside seating, delicious organic fare, which includes quite a few inventive, filling, vegetarian options  -  not just the horrid savoury muffin usually dedicated to that category.  Haven't tried the coffee yet.

Visited this cafe for lunch today and I had a wonderful experience. We ordered the veggie lasagne, olive & feta quiche and acai bowl. The prices were reasonable and the serving size was just right. The acai bowl tasted great! The fresh fruits and coconut yoghurt that came with it complemented it so well! The veggie lasagne was tomato based and hence, wasn't too rich. It was generously stuffed with vegetables. My only gripe is that it could do with a little more cheese, but apart from that, it was great.

I've been to this cafe a number of times and the food is fantastic. The avocado on toast is delicious- generous servings including almost a whole avocado, heaps of hummus and haloumi. Coffee is always great. Service at times can be a little slow- surprisingly once when it was quiet we waited for over an hour. I will continue to come here as the food is delicious.

The food was fantastic very rustic with plenty to choose from, just a little complaint that there were no high chairs for the kids. Other than that a fantastic meal.

I have always loved Sol Breads they do lots of great gluten free and spelt loaves. Although, I have never been to either of their cafes. I was meeting a friend and we were looking for a healthy cafe brekky so popped in and I was not disappointed. After a lot of deliberation I opted for the Acai Bowl with Coyo and Housemade Granola $14.50. This was quite expensive for an acai bowl but it arrived and it was huge! The acai was the perfect consistency and the granola was delicious. A little bit more fruit would have been appreciated...

Ok if you feel like feeding your inner hippy this is your world. Rubbish décor and limited menu but the food is good - fresh, simple and generous. I reckon their bread is wildly over-rated however..Coffee tends to weak however the smoothies are super.A good choice if you have slipped on your yoga pants and want to mix with the indi crowd.

Best GlutenFree bread in the World!. Having lived in and visited many countries - and being gluten and yeast free - I have tried many but have never found a decent ready made bread to suit my dietary needs. Usually they're too dry, too bland and generally pretty disgusting without being toasted with a yummy topping that overpowers the bread taste 'o) So for years I've made my own - which wasn't bad. And did the trick adequately. Until....! I came to Brissy and discovered Sol's Sourdough Multigrain Rice bread!! Absolutely unbelievably delicious and filling!! Fresh or toasted! Sol's other GF breads are good - this one is PHENOMENAL!! Thank you Sol!!! :o)

Chicken in an omelette was a winner despite my preconceived notions. The garden area looked a little like a crack den, it made us wonder why the staff kept wanting to walk that way. Not only did we have a positive breakfast experience but lunch was also catered for from select choices from the fresh bread on offer.

Went here with a friend for the first time on a busy Saturday morning. The place had a great vibe and on one look at the beautiful display of breads and pastries at the counter, we were instantly excited to dine here. The breakfast menu was simply beautiful. It was so hard to make a decision and I wanted everything at once! We settled on the avocado and tomato grain toast with fresh lemon; and my friend had the sautéed mushrooms with wilted spinach and poached egg. When it came out we were frothing at the mouth. It looked amazing! And tasted equally as good. The coffee was amongst the best (if not the best) I've ever had. Will definitely be back again..and again! Love it!

Bread and Breakfast. This is a great establishment for hearty sourdough breads and healthy breakfast and lunch. Beware though, the breakfast portions are quite large so come hungry or share (especially the omelette!) I thoroughly enjoyed my Sol Breakfast (I think that's what it's called) as the scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked, and the bread was divine. Have had a quick lunch here too with a simple quiche and side salad. It's a great atmosphere for catching up with friends.

I love the food in this place. It is always fresh (made on the premises) and healthy. It is real food not like the mass produced rubbish the chain cafes serve up. The environment is relaxed, the staff are friendly, prices are reasonable. What more could you want? Be sure to go to Mick's Nuts across the road too for fresh, cheap nuts, chocolate and other items.

Vegan benny on a vegan croissant with herbed mushrooms was the best brekky I've had in a long time. And I am a meat eater. Thanks guys for an amazing time and great atmosphere, definitely worth the Sunday morning cycle up the hill! Masala chai also delicious.
