We had dinner here for my sons birthday and our food was very nice with big servings. In fact, we all took leftovers home with us. Enchiladas did lack a little taste though. The Margaritas were delicious but quite pricey. The left over makings of the margaritas were bought out to us in a glass, which was excellent. I have seen places where they won’t give you the extras or charge you for them.
The only annoying thing of the evening was a table of six came in after us and got served first.

Took 40 minutes to get our meals. The plates were hot but the food was cold. They don't add preservatives or additives and apparently no flavour either. The quality was very poor. Won't be coming back. Can make this better at home with Old El Paso.

Had dinner tonight with the family and the service was incredibly slow. Food took so long to come out and when I checked with one of the staff (old lady with white hair and glasses) 20 mins after ordering to see how much longer we had to wait for the first entree, got a non-answer respond of “it will come out when it’s ready” without even bothering to check with the kitchen. When it did finally came out after 25-30 mins, there wasn’t any apology or acknowledgement. The mains took another 15 mins to come out. It wasn’t that busy too. Of the times we dined here, this is the worst experience and definitely the last visit.

Nice Mexican food and beautiful decoration inside of the restaurant. Exotic and colourful.
There no so many people at lunch time on week days. So if you don't like crowded place or noisy place for many people . This restaurant is good for you.

I love Montezuma's. Great service, delicious food, lovely atmosphere. My partner has strict dietary requirements so our waitress was very helpful and knowledgeable with changes that could be made to the dish and he loved it! Thank you again for the wonderful service.
Recommendations: my partner had the California but with a few changes (left of pic) and I got the Sanan Andres (on the right). I highly reccomend them both as well as the Mole Poblano I got the last time I was here. Delicious!!
Update: Still love it here 2 years later ❤
The lady (owner i think?) is so lovely. Always a pleasure being served by her. The food is amazing - my partner and I have tried out many different dishes here and they have all been delicious. Service is great. I'm so glad we live so close by. See you again soon!

This place is 5/5 on all levels! On costumer service, food and atmosphere. Photos just dont do justice with how delicious the food was. Its a fun and nice place to take my partner every time :)

I ordered takeaway for it to be ready in 30 minutes, yet having to wait another 20 minutes when I got there.
I ordered the vegan enchiladas on the phone and also ordering the vegan date cake, I was not offered the vegan coconut cream instead of dairy ice cream - even though I ordered the vegan enchiladas. I could not properly enjoy my date cake which I would rate a 2.5. It was way too sweet and too much.
The enchiladas made me feel sick!!
They had cheese on top (which is how it’s supposed to be) but also cheese inside and it was way way too much. The vegan cheese was barely melted, I would suggest trying to find a vegan cheese that melts better. They gave me a side salad with the enchiladas which was just slaw and vegan cheese 🤮. I really struggled to taste the flavour even of the sauce, I just wish there wasn’t so much cheese. Maybe I would suggest also trying to use vegan beef and using more sauce in the enchilada dish, inside with the beef too, but take the cheese out and leave it just on top. Let it bake more.

TL;DR: An old favourite after all these years, what would usually come to mind with the words "Mexican" being uttered. Many have come and expanded the horizons in the meantime, but that does not mean Montezuma's should be passed by. There is still a plethora of charm when looking in the right places, with big filling meals aplenty.

Montezuma's is an old flame for many a Queenslander over the past several decades. With not a whole lot of Mexican options frequently in town, this was a unique gem for so long and you could be rest assured that somewhere nearby there was an outlet. It has always been vibrant, and been able to serve a hot and filling meal ever since. For this outlet, like something is not often seen around this part of town, right there it stands in its own block, having its own establishment, and a car park to itself. For the first time in ages, serendipity had led to trying it out for one more time - and truth be told, it is just as good as it was ever remembered to be.

It was time again to meet my good friend for a meal, and if it has not been stated yet the turns for choosing where to go are alternating. For me, I saw that it was coming up a certain day and thus left it a little longer than a month. That would pass it into May, and I went to specifically aim for the 5th - essentially making it apt for some Mexican. All that purely was, was happenstance and I went to take advantage of it. At the time of deciding to make it that date, there was a specific place I had in mind. In the meantime, life had a way of happening - I was called into volunteer work early, but still was determined to fit all of the schedule in. So my mind raced to what else there was open, and this was not too far away. It was all going to work out in the end, if a delicious is in the midst it is hard to argue with that.

Inside is a mixed blessing. On one hand, they did do a good job of making the vibe Mexican due to all the bright colours and attention to detail with how Mexican architecture looks like. One another hand, this place could do with a bit of a touch-up. It might say that Montezuma's has been here since the 1970s, but that doesn't mean a refurbishment is not in order. Another toss up is with the lighting, they could allow either a little more natural light into the place, or give it some better lighting. There is potential to look unique and characteristic, with all the aesthetics around the place. Right here, you almost forget about the outside world which is a good touch to be honest.

The service was fine. Nothing really terrible about it, though nothing much stood out about it either. They took the orders fairly well, and delivered them within a reasonable time. Like with a lot of similar places, the efficiency as seen as key which they managed to handle well. Plates and such were cleared gradually, and they did occasionally come back to the table to check on how the food was.

Debates will always be happening about how to distinguish a Mexican place from something which is more Tex-Mex. Montezuma's is likely to be more the latter, though it will give the best of both worlds. You get all the usual Mexican style fare here - the burritos, the tacos, the nachos, enchiladas, fajitas, tostadas and whatnot. Vegetarians aren't quite excluded, though it is safe to say that it heavily favours the carnivores.

They start off the menu with meals that are smaller, and more based on street food. That and some dips with corn chips. Already though, those light meals still have a substantial quantity to them - you ain't seen nothing yet. The next section on the menu showcase some of the aforementioned Mexican favourites, plus several hearty stew-like meals, making something here for everyone. Most of these are served with a side of Spanish rice, and re-fried beans, plus the occasional one with tortillas. The combinations plates are the real shining star of Montezumas, which for the price of a regular meal clients are able to get a combination of their most popular meals. Most of them are enchiladas, and are something else to see.

All this is able to finished off with some light, sweet desserts. This is down Mexico way we are talking about, so expect a fair bit of chocolate here and there along with caramel. As for getting something to drink, they have a big range of beers from Mexico, as well as wines, sangria, and all the usual beverages to expect.

With perusing the menu, it becomes a bit tricky knowing what to have. Like it was mentioned beforehand, one of those reasons is due to the big plates that give you a bit of this, and a bit of that - they are always tempting when coming into this place. I was quite at the edge of considering and thus getting one of them, yet something in my mind changed it around the last minute. For a long time, I had wanted to try out the classic dish "chicken mole" at an actual Mexican restaurant - particularly after my dad had made it on several occasions. So that was the final choice.

Whether it was my dad's recipe from all those years ago, or this version of the dish, any gourmand or general fella who likes their food ought to try it out. For its strange and unusual flavour base, it earns itself a place in being on the world's fine dishes. Just reading any recipe from a web search, try to tell me another meal that is even remotely similar to it. The mole poblano dish took half a roast chicken, cooked the sucker really slowly - to the point the meat fell off the bone without much effort - and was smothered in a spicy nutty, chocolate sauce, that had nearly three dozen different herbs and spices. After that, it is garnisheed with several fruits - orange, pineapple, banana, and coconut - which is all served on a bed of Spanish rice. Let's just say, many reasons exist for why mole is such a a great and unique dish in the whole spread of world cuisine and the example right here managed to showcase that effectively.

The meat was as tender as it could be, falling right off the bones without much effort required. The sauce had definitely gotten infused into the flesh, which was also really juicy. It had a strange flavour that is really difficult to describe, and is not like anything else that exists on planet Earth. Chocolate is an apparent ingredient, yet it is not so sweet; they also have plenty of spices mixed together, yet it never feels so hot. Despite heaps of nuts being used in the sauce, unlike a satay sauce it does not become noticeable nor prominent. Regardless of that, one thing that it can be described as is scrumptious. The sauce was thick and plentiful, pouring itself right over the hot, well-seasoned rice. All the fruits on the side were sweet and juicy, contributing even more to the complex, intrinsic palate that is chicken mole. If you can rip yourself away from getting one of the combination meals, this is a good place to focus your eyes.

My friend did opt for one of those nation-famous plates - getting the Gringo which had a whole lot of beef. That was beef in a burrito, and beef in an enchilada, which then was served with a big bed of Spanish rice. It has been the lore of the land for so many years that I am a big hoover, and will make room to finish off the meals if need be. She knows it, I know it, and that became the case this time around. The enchilada got finished off, with only a quarter of the beef burrito remaining along with a good amount of the rice. I don't know how to explain it, but I have always loved the mouth-feel texture of beef that is slow cooked like it is here. Something about it is so tender, and the way it infuses the flavours of the sauce, then gets combined with the other ingredients in the burritos will be a lot like what they must serve up in heaven. The cheese is melted beautifully, and the tortillas are definitely given a buttery finish before getting cooked making them that much more delightful. Sometimes simplicity is the way to go. If the mole weren't so good, there would be order envy here.

With this friend, she always has the idea and the negotiating skills to weasel in dessert and/or coffee of some sort. Or it cold also be me. Nevertheless, she still reserves room for dessert afterwards and seeing that this place had churros, she just had to get some to finish off the lunch. An order of those was gotten, with the dipping sauce being good old chocolate. The coffee that they did was more in the vein of old-style brewing, hence it was a plain old black coffee for me. That coffee was great, with the brew allowing an initially smooth and mild texture for the drink, seeping that hit of strength throw bit by bit - not unlike how coffee gets brewed itself. The doughnuts were slightly crispy on the outside, but once you got into the middle they were soft like a cloud. Dipping them in dark chocolate is as good as it could get, the vanilla ice cream notwithstanding - though still a nice addition in its own right.

Like a lot of these old institutions that are somehow still around, it does pay to give Montezumas a go just for old times sake. It really does seem like a relic from another time when it was about the pinnacle of what Australians used to know about Mexican cuisine and how it works. Times have changed, and a bit more variety is at the finger tips - though it will still feel sparse to many North Americans accustomed to it all. For what it is worth, Montezumas is not anything that is mind-blowing and is far from the best place to get that Mexican experience. Nonetheless, on its own merits they serve a wholesome, and filling meal which is hot as the sun, and prove well as a place to saunter into at a moments notice. Maybe it is because I had it a lot as a kid, but this still does it for me.

4/5

Ambience:
The restaurant was very decorated, and the inclusions of its logos, as well as Mexican related symbols added to the authenticity of the restaurant, and establishes itself as a Mexican restaurant

Service:
The waiters were very nice, checking on us and asking if we required anything else

Food:
the tortillas were kept warm, and they were soft, which I enjoyed. The sauces were flavoursome, except for the salsa which was a bit watery. The meat was well marinated, however some pieces were a bit hard and not as tender. The churros were slightly crunchy, and the addition of ice cream and chocolate sauce really added to the flavour, making it sweet and delicious.
Came to Montezuma's for lunch on a Friday for lunch. Was seated immediately by some lovely waiters who also brought out cold and icy table water. The seating in the restaurant is very spacious with a mixture of booths and regular tables. The booths are very private but the seats get a little uncomfortable after a while of sitting. The lighting during the day is mostly natural so it was quite dark in there.

I ordered the shredded beef enchiladas which I really liked! The beef despite being advertised as shredded still had some chunks of beef which I actually really enjoyed. The entire dish was perfectly flavoured - not too salty and not too spicy but the perfect amount of spices. The frijoles were very well done - they were smooth and almost melted in your mouth, perfectly complementing the other components of the dish. The rice was very tasty but was a little overcooked. Some sections of the rice were a bit hard and could not be chewed through. Still, the dish was really delicious!

Overall, the food served was quite authentic to its Mexican roots as well as the authentic decorations around the restaurant. Will be returning for more delicious Mexican foods!

Last night went to above in Upper MT Gravatt table for 4 one being well behaved child of 3.
Was husbands birthday and we booked in ahead of time. First they got the time and day wrong and rang us up wondering were we were told them once again you have got it wrong it's Thurs night at 7pm. We arrived last night and walked into a stinking hot restaurant on a very very hot Brisbane night NO AIRCONDITIONING.
It was absolutely awful we were dripping with sweat ,had to go to toilets and put water over us to cool off and get rid of sweat and I felt faint.
Staff were told to make up an excuse and I felt for them in the heat.
A terrible night out spoilt . Do not go there without asking about air conditioner. working. Work place health and safety in kitchen as temperature was high. Hardly any one there as they must have walked out. Dreadful.

My first restaurant while visiting my sister andwe should have stayed home. The only saving grace was that their hot salsa was smoking hot. Only my grandniece abd I could handle it. The rest of the meal was bland and quite unremarkable fare. I am back from my visit and to be honest can't remember what I ate.
Foodie
Alright I guess. Nothing wrong with the food, nothing amazing with the food.

Would definitely go back there if I was craving a burrito, nachos or anything Mexican. Price is decent but a bit overpriced for some items.

Lighting in the restaurant is horrible - it’s too dark you can’t even see the food in front of you.
Randall Stallard
This may be Mexican food for Australians, but it not for me. We ate here while visiting my sister and I found it bland. The mole sauce had no undertones of any flavors. I could not see eating here again when I can prepare better.

Not bad, it's a place we've been to before several times. Food was tasty but I get the feeling a lot of stuff is reheated because when I went to the bar to buy us drinks (which were overpriced), I noticed 6 microwaves in the kitchen.... probably something that shouldnt be visible by customers. I think the hot plates you recieve are because of the cheese they melt over everything in the oven before serving? Not necessarily cooked in there?? We had to ask for water. Whenever I have the enchilladas, rice & refried beans dish, the enchilada gets smaller and the rice often has some hard uncooked bits.
The young waitress was very organised and on the ball, but the cooking staff looked frazzled and it seems like Deliveroo is becoming priority on these restaurants over dine in customers!?

Have been going here for decades (even before it was Montezuma's), and have never had a bad experience. Totally fresh, delicious and prompt meals with genuine Mexican flavours and decor. We even took some Mexican friends there to get their opinion, and they said it was very much like something from Mexico City - but as they were from a quiet country region it was a little bit over the top for them, and can definitely become a little bit noisy, at times
Andy R
This is within walking distance from my house. Have not been here for ages with good reason. Overrated and must be one of a few left in this franchise?!! Saw one up in Noosa recently. Much better/fresher options for Mexican these days.

First time at Montezumas tonight, great atmosphere even though the decor was very...well it had a lot going on. Quick service, food was served quick as well. It was all delicious and didn't leave us feeling heavy or oily. Price was decent too!
Overall a good experience and we will be back :)
Emma Hansford
Such poor service. After waiting 40 minutes for our meal, we flagged a waitress and told her our meals were taking so long, and asked for some corn chips to tie us over. After another half hour we asked how much longer we would need to wait, only to be told they never placed our order!!! We had staff walk passed us the entire time, including the manager, and none of them ever thought to wonder why we'd been there so long without getting any food. We left and went to McDonald's! Montezuma's has a lot to learn from McDonalds because there we got our meals within 3 minutes.

Pretty average tasting sort of food. There are nowadays a lot more and better options for decent Mexican fare around Brisbane, whether you're looking for fast food like Guzman y Gomez or places like El Torito in West End.
Molly Shishka
A family favourite for over a decade. Great atmosphere and interior design. Authentic and delicious, fresh and fast food. Lots of options for special dietary requirements. Friendly staff who are helpful and knowledgeable. The menu has recently changed and it is a bit more expensive and a bit harder to read, so might just make it for special occasions now.
Patrick
Great traditional restaurant if you're after a hearty Mexican meal. Can be a little pricey once you add drinks for what you get but certainly tasty food that fills your belly! I'm undecided on if I like the decor as it hasn't really changed since I was a kid but makes it feel a little rustic. Its become a go-to place when we have burrito cravings!

DON"T TOUCH THE PLATE!!!!. My Partner and I came here for dinner one nigh and the place was busy. Despite this we were seated quickly. After making out menu selection and getting drinks from the bar we looked around for a waitress to place our order, who were nowhere to be found.... They looked a bit understaffed that night and since this was our first visit maybe it was a one off, it happens. However, the waitress never came. After some time i did spot the FOH staff member and asked her to take our order which she did and apologised for the lack of service. When the food arrived the waitress bringing it looked really angry, she plopped the plates in front of us without a word and in the process burned my arm! apparently the food gets cooked on the serving plate... The food it self wasn't too bad but I've had much better elsewhere and paid a lot less. The decor in the restaurant was outdated and a bit creepy. I would not recommend this place, If you want Mexican food try Guzman Y Gomez.
Sherita_t
My go to place. Went here in the 90s as a kid a few times, then discovered I like it again in the 00's and haven't stopped going since! I go here on dates, with friends and with my parents almost once a month. Sure, the food is kinda greasy and not the best quality. If you are looking for fine dining, pass this one. However, if you want a moderately priced feed, good taste and a fun vibe, this is the place to go.

The atmosphere is the best part. Its usually packed on Fridays and weekends, there is always someone having a birthday and being sung to, the wait staff are super friendly and obliging (some of them have been around for years and I still recognize them as they have grown up!) and there are drinks!!

This is also the only place I consistently order the same dish and haven't got sick of it yet. LOVE the Durango. My vegetarian friends also have plenty of options.
Ari Katie Fisher
I enjoyed it! Food was yummy and service was good but a little pricey but would eat here again
Rachel Ryan
Food was good, excellent customer service.
But when receiving the food, the lady mentions that the plates came right out of the oven, and were EXTREMELY hot. This wasnt such an issue for us, but we also had a child who burnt her hand on the plate.
Probably wont return.

A favourite.. My boyfriend and I are regulars are Montezuma's in Mt Gravatt. I've had the pleasure of trying the Montezuma's delight, vegetarian burrito, vegetarian enchilada as well as some of the vegetarian larger dishes. They are always delicious.
My boyfriend is a fan of the Sanan Andres as well as the Verde Burrito.
Ken
Today was the first time I went to this restaurant and I ordered a quesadilla appetiser, montezuma's special, and a burrito. And I can honestly say it was the worst restauraunt experience I have ever had. They serve the rice hard, over cooked, and burnt with no flavor. The montezuma's special seemed like it was just a bunch of vegetables, and a ton of apple pieces shoved on a soggy tortilla with the chicken tasting like dog food. I would never recommend this restaurant to anybody. I've had a lot of experience in Mexican food living in Southern California all my life until Moving to Brisbane.
Jules
Don't Try The Takeout. Have been to Montezuma's a few times over the last 2 years, originally we thought the price was a little stiff for the quality of the food but the atmosphere was good and it was very family friendly. Unfortunatley we have noticed the service time and food quality have drastically reduced over the last little while. The last time we ate in, we waited over an hour for 2 standard meals to be delivered so we opted for "take out" the next time, so we could call ahead and not have to wait. Unfortunately, the size of the "takeout" meals were considerable smaller than what you normally received on a plate and the food was burned to a crisp in some places and cold in others. Wouldn't consider going back.
D Kircher
I like the food and the service is ok. I like the shredded beef and their corn chips are tasty. Great proportion. I find that a lot of the menu items are pretty similar though.
Lammeister
Great Tex Mex, but restaurant needs update. We enjoy our texmex from Montezuma's, but the restaurant really needs an overhaul. As soon as you enter you get the musty smell of a place that's been around 20+ years. The decor is great, but perhaps it all needs a good steam clean!
Hail83
Never returning. The table and the menus have clearly been wiped by a dirty rag. We ordered the "hot sauce" corn chips, I was not sure whether it was meant to be hot in temperature or hot in spicy...since the sauce was cold and not spicy at all. The enchalada's were horrible, way too much sauce and cheese to hide the poor quality of meat and tortilla.
Elliott
Always good, same reliable food and service, I've been coming here for years one of our favourite places to eat. :)
Jake
Love it, its always great :) time and time again just gets better, a good feed.
Tanya Allen
One of our favourite eating places. Restaurant is colourful, staff are bubbly & attentive, & food is delicious with very large portions. Big like!

Pretty Average. I love Mexican. But when ordering the food you can tell that Montezuma's is a change restaurant. We waited an hour for our first course which was nachos. It was allright but nothing to write home about. The burrito we had for the next course was nice I really liked it. But it repeated on us later. I had a cocktail. The cocktail explanation explained that it has tropical fruits in it I got the drink and it tasted so so so sour. I would of expected this if it was a Margarita but it was a labeled as a cocktail. Wouldnt go back again.
Bamboo
On ordering the food and then spying who was making it, I thought that they were on jail release, and the food was what I expected. Long wait and overcooked.
Marina
Don't eat here!!. Service is disgraceful and the food isn't much better. The first hiccup was when I asked could chorizo be added to my seafood enchilada and was told no because of different cooking times - isn't that what a restaurant is all about?
We were told that we needed to order any drinks from the bar, which is fine. I ordered a margarita. A few minutes later the waitress came over to tell me that my drink was ready for me at the bar. Not that I'm used to people waiting on me, but I was a bit shocked that she would come to my table to tell me my drink was ready and not bring it over to me. To top it off, the margarita had been made with sugar instead of salt, in a Mexican restaurant?? I was shocked.
Our food was very average. The presentation was poor and tasted quite bland, lacking the flavor that Mexican foods usually possess. It looked like the plate had been left under a grill or oven for a few minutes, the rice was burned and enchilada was stuck to the plate.
My friend ordered a chorizo enchilada. What she got was nothing like chorizo, it was beef based. With our incredulity rising, we ate quickly and left as soon as we could. As we paid we waited to be asked how our meal was to relay our complaints, but we weren't asked. At this stage we just wanted to leave so got out of there as fast as we could. On paper it looks like good value, but the experience wasn't worth nearly what we paid. If you're looking for a true Mexican experience, bypass Montezuma's.
Emma
Good but not spectacular. We had a dinner there once. it"s fun to try for the first time, colourful and exotic inside ambience. Have to say food was...ok...
Because those foods are simple and nothing very stands out and we thought we can make them at home..
But potion for the main meal was great.

Just is that meal are not so authentic we thought...
Cherie Mitchell
Busy, Noisy, Colourful. This restaurant is always packed, but after eating there I'm not sure why. The servings are quite big, if you like that kind of thing, but everything looks the same and you don't need teeth to eat it - all meals are soft and mushy and can basically just be inhaled. It was interesting to try, but if you want to go somewhere to eat a nice meal that looks good on the plate and talk without shouting above the kids yelling from their highchairs and loud teens, this is probably not the place.
Mel B
Great food, and amazing cocktails! Lunch is a great time to go because it is table service!
Go_girl
Love the food! Restaurant was packed out and all tables reserved by the time we arrived at 6pm. Main thing to note is it is a cash bar ONLY. Large menu, lots of options and we loved the mocktails. Staff really friendly.
David Spolc
Could do a lot better. Got a take away carne Tosdada. The aluminium container was boiling hot, but the food inside was luke warm. The 'crunchy' Tosdada was shoved under the food and disappeared into a soggy mess. The side of rice was unencumbered with taste. The rest was similarly bland. The meat was like mushy cat food. The staff are pleasant and the service is fairly quick. The price is reasonable and the atmosphere is typically warm and fun - its for families and know-nothing teens on a budget. So, if you don't care about crappy, bland food, its a fair night out. (P.S. I used to be a Tex-Mex a la carte cook, so I know a bit about this game)
Chad Glover
Great cost effective reasturant, decent food, good service, great atmosphere, fantastic sangria!
Louise.l_90
Good but not great. The menu was too big for the table and was very hard to read. Difficult to choose a dish since there were no photos to look at. Serving size was decent and very filling. Good service.
Adam
FANTASTIC. My favourite place to go for a meal, good place for environment. I'd rather go at lunchtime though when it's quieter, because its booked out almost every night and very busy !! Because they're so good !!
Steven Dudley
Great food. The service is pretty efficient considering they are generally booked out every night. As per all Montezumas, the menu is the same, my favorite is the Mole Poblano.
Cora Chen
Montezumas makes for great comfort food, party food or hangover food. It doesn’t pretend to be gourmet and the individual items are quite reasonably priced. You don’t go there for subtle flavours that showcase different ingredients. You go when you’re hun
