Reviews Rock N Roll Kebab-pizza

TL;DR: No real need to go about a place like this. You know the late night kebab haunt, and it often serves some of the most random bits of food. That is what Rock n Roll Kebabs did, and most people would stumble upon it in real life. I stumbled upon it on UberEats.

Upon the busy mid-way stretch of George Street, around the pubs and clubs, with the cab rank just outside its doors, this is the place open when everything else has died down (aside from some other fast food joints). In that regard, at the very least you could call it the reliable source for a quick, cheap and simple bite, just don't go expecting a culinary experience. Keep all this in mind, and Rock n Roll Kebabs could well win you over.

During the Chaplaincy that takes place on Wednesdays near my work, how the meetings go varies with schedules and the ilk. More often than not, someone provides a bite to eat - often homemade, or bought from the store quickly. On the odd occasion, I make sure to put my contribution forward; by that, what I mean is I get onto the UberEats app quickly and seeing what I could conjure up. In these situations, that often defaults to pizza.

With making another stop first during the mid-morning, the ordering was done on the fly. Not counting for the weather at the time, there was the attempt to meet them half-way when it was done. Nevertheless, onto the app it was and through the options for pizza the desired one was a place that would be fairly quick if possible, plus I could get a couple at least without breaking too much of the bank. Well, it was this one that fitted the meal then and there. Press a few orders into the app, then just wait around the designated area when he gets close.

With the delivery service, still without giving the location way as much as I can, I have come to realise around this area can be a labyrinth for many of the Uber drivers. So I won't go too hard on them, pacing back and forth trying to figure it out. Also, at time it was raining and it was the erratic part of the year regarding when rainfall happens or not, and when it does it is still erratic how much. That is unpredictable, and was hard to account for. Nevertheless, the food got here in the end - still hot - and the man delivering it was nice enough.

Also, it is usually hard to critique the decor of a place when it has been done on delivery, except in retrospect. There have been one or two places in mind personally that that could be attributed, but this one is right here in the now of writing it up. Many, many, many times - practically daily, I have passed by this place at the end of the day. Kebabs shops often aren't much to write home about this their decor, seeing as they are fitting a mold not in that vein.

Nevertheless, this still gets something of a prop. Many will have barley any standing room for five or so people looking at the hot box; Rock n Roll can easily fit that many people. The other prop that is giving is the spacious upstairs area. While plain, that at least allows some clients to have a more relaxed place while having a bite, and this is one of the few places open in the wee hours of the morning.

They serve all that would be expected at the kebab shop right here, and sorry fellow Brits - yours have you spoiled for choice over there. This is kept even more simple, and still have that bizarrely charming mentality with the girth of options at hand. Aside from the usual late night kebabs (choice of meat, salads, sauces, and an abundance of extras), they also have them as kebab plates, and rice plates. However, it won't be a kebab shop in this day and age without an HSP on hand - that is one snack that I feel no guilt in liking as much as I do. Several other snacks are here, including fish and chips, the odd hamburger, gozlemes and - getting to what the whole review is about - pizza.

For something to drink, it is merely what they got in the fridge. Sodas, sports drinks, Mothers, bottled water and the ilk. Nothing fancy here.

A bit this, that I justify being a generous individual to allow enough for any hungry patron abound, a bit of that, having enough items to justify giving a review, it was two kinds of pizza plus a gozleme as something else and something a bit different that went into my order. Not enough as a pizza party, though it did suit the few people at Chaplaincy well.

The pizzas were the diplomatic pepperoni, and their own house special. Also, another reason in getting the gozleme was because it was something without cheese - and that was just in case one particular guy was there, whom is fatally allergic to cheese.

One thing is for certain, the pizzas here are a decent size, and the slices are huge. For me, that is no real sweat, but others around aren't such big eaters - this was easily helped by cutting the quarters down even more. The bases with the pizza are fairly thin, not so well with folding though. Overall, they are fine if a bit on the bland side. The pepperoni pizza was exactly that - pepperoni, with heaps of cheese and a sprinkling of herbs here and there. It tasted alright, with the meat being a milder kind, and plenty of olive oil all over it.

For the house special, the combination of ingredients was akin to a cross between the supreme and a Middle Eastern take on pizza. That means not a whole lot of cheese firstly, other ingredients on top were some onion, some salami, capsicum, and olives. Pretty standard, could have been spiced up with some herbs or something else, and it does okay for what it is.

As for the gozleme, they can be tasty but this one wasn't really. It was a bit squashed down and thus burnt, which was much to the detriment of the filling, which should have been a good amount of spicy Turkish sausage. For the serving size, there was enough to be shared around and it proved to be a good party food again.

Rock n Roll, being one of the late night kebab shops, has that special place which is sort of off the ratings scale in many ways. Of course, it if is hot and moreish, that is preferable, but if any sort of gourmand is considering looking for a fine dining experience, this is the furthest thing from that possible. In no way, even deep down being an ardent fan, can anyone pretend it is anything that is "must have", "an attraction", or any of those hyperboles thrown around the foodie world. However, in that same thought process because they exist to fulfill their own raison d'etre, it would be unkind to belittle them too much about it. Being the kind man that I am, while the score that shows in pastel is a 3.0 the real one is 3.5 in meaning that Rock n Roll does not suck.

Rock'n Roll is a 24 hour kebab shop that busier at 2 am than at noon. The food is the usual kebab and pizza shop faire. Nothing special but not bad either. Probably tastes better at 2am when you've had a few and your judgement is not so discerning.

I came here for a mixed kebab late at night (around 23:00 on a wednesday). The staff were friendly and patient even at a busy time, and prompt with the food too. I had a mixed kebab, large size ($12.50), although there is a size smaller and a size bigger as well. The kebab was good for a random late night kebab stop, and the convenience alone was worth it. Not a 5 star kebab, but good, fast service, convenience and decent enough quality food brought it up to make a worthwhile visit.

Update: price jumped up $2 since 2 weeks ago. It was a bit dear at $18 for a large HSP, +$1 for cheese, now it’s $20+1. Can’t really justify having it often very often at that cost, even though it is very tasty - Best Snack Pack is the best I’ve had in years. I’ve been to a dozen or more other places, and this is the cream of the crop. You might find one equally as good if your are lucky, unlikely to find one better. Unfortunately location isn’t good, smelt like garbage outside, so I ate it back at the food court.

Fantastic to grab a bite to eat after having a few drinks on the town. Perfect position right near the queens park, so we sat on the grass and had a snack before watching the fireworks on New Year’s Eve. I thought the chicken kebab on a stick was going to be dry but it was delicious! Loved the pepperoni pizza. Very friendly staff with quick service!
