Review Manor - Brisbane

Excellent. Real Cantonese taste. Hong Kong people will particularly like it. And most important is good price. We order 5 dishes, half BBQ duck, Chinese cabbage, Sweet and Sour Port, Crocodiles, and a very delicious steam fish. All so good!

Used to go there years ago but stopped coz the serving staffs give you a funny look. When we asked for fresh chillies they said they will have to charge us. Also we asked for the Chinese egg tarts and mango pudding and was told they were all sold out. When another table asked they went into the kitchen and got them some. Just doesn't make sense. Oh well, the restaurant has been closed.

Disappointing experience with an overall lazy vibe. The food was below average. We had to send the braised beef back because it was off and had an unpleasant sour taste. The meat in the ox tongue dish did not seem to be ox tongue. The duck wings seemed to have been microwaved and we had some that were slightly cold in the middle. For the tea: you self serve from a communal plastic jug and into the provided paper cups. I left with a slightly queasy stomach. The only good point was the deep fried soft shell crab and their offer of an alternate dish to replace the bad braised beef.

Came in for night yum cha - it was the worst yum cha I’ve eaten in my life. They need to consider hiring a new chef as we struggled to think of anything good to say about it. The prawn dumplings were straight out of a frozen supermarket box, the deep fried squid was extremely salty, the custard buns had really thick dough and very little custard, the meat in the dim sims tasted like they were mixed with flour, and the BBQ pork rice rolls were of a strange texture and came with the wrong sauce. A deeply unsatisfying way to spend $50.

Sadly to say, it was the worst yum cha I have ever eaten. Its a shame their quality has dropped so massively, and still pricey. Their yum cha menu is also alot smaller now. The steam beef ball (which is a primary dish for any yum cha) used to be my favourite dish but sadly they don't sell it anymore. The dim sum no longer has prawns in it. Dishes where they used prawns has very wierd texture which didn't taste fresh but processed or blended up. It didntd feel safe to eat. The prawn rice roll had the wrong sauce and did make me feel like I was eating out from a garbage bin, it was really quite disgusting. I cannot comment on their other food as I only had yum cha this time, but this will definitely be the last time I go back or recommend to anyone until they make improvements.

We got Bbq roast duck from this restaurant on Uber eat. No words can describe well enough how old and dry the duck is. The taste is also horrendous. We ended up hungry that night. Bad experience overall.

This place used to be good.. Terrible service... Ordered a coral trout for $128 which came out under cooked, we had to send it back to the kitchen. The rice was cold and dry... The glutinous dumplings were soggy and oily.. Very disappointed.. 2/10

Family Yum Cha lunch today and we decide to come here as there are no Sunnybank queues and plenty of parking spaces available. I order the dry fried Beef Ho Fun and ten Dim Sum dishes. In the meantime, we drink hot Iron Goddess Tea and chatter. <br/><br/>The Beef Ho Fun is served first while the Dim Sum are steaming. The noodles are nicely fried, beef is tender and it is a generous serving. Our run-of-the-mill Yum Cha meal is enjoyable. Service is very friendly and thank you to Chef Danny!<br/><br/>With Phuong Tran

Gave us little amount of noodles for the chow mein, which had no flavour <br/>Worst duck I’ve had so far, so dry<br/>$60 for three dishes definitely not worth it, won’t be returning.

We enjoyed our dinner here tonight. It's been a while since I last came. The staffs all changed but have to say they are very much better service. The food standard remains as good as the old time. Highly recommend for late yum cha dinner.

After I read so many negative reviews as shown below, I felt very sorry to this restaurant. Indeed, it was one of the Chinese restaurant trading under the same management in Eight Mile Plains over 30 years. Since the relocation to the current address from the Eight Mile Plain shopping centre, its strategy of serving authentic Cantonese cuisine did gain its glory for a long period of time. However, due to the rush of over-branching of other types of eateries in Brisbane, the management could not keep the eyes on every food outlets, then service went down with negative feedback followed. I have not been back for a while but tried to re-visit last Sunday. The first thing I felt was the improvement in service. Obviously, most of the wait-staff are not green but perform well in serving the diners. We went in group of four so ordered a Chinese banquet for 4-6 people. The first thing came was the house-made Chinese soup, which was bland under my standard as compared to what I have in Sunnybank Oriental or Zen Flavour. Next came the lobster with ginger and shallot. Standard was average and it could gain more mark if there was more strong flavour in the dish. Then came my flavourite Steamed chicken which was prepared as the same standard as other Chinese restaurants such as Haoke or Golden Lane but no one can bit the one that I had at the previous Big Gun (that management had closed down). Then the braised Chinese vegetable gained back marks with its "wok qi", thumb-up. The next dish of Mud Crab in Singapore style was a good dish again. it was so authentic that recalled the episode when I tasted the same dish in Singapore. Hero of the night was the sweet & sour pork rib which was freshly prepared in the kitchen, crispy outside and juicy texture that earned my appreciation. I admitted that I have not had such nice dish of the same kind for many years. Having said that the last dish was a let down, I think it will be better if they used flounder instead of frozen lemon sole for steamed fish dish partly because the sole fish does not have much meat and partly because the sole fish definitely was a frozen product which was a negative for a steamed seafood dish (a version of deep fried in pepper salt would be better). Overall, I am much appreciated with the improvement of the manor and wish them regain their glory and all the best in the future trading.

Used to be a favourite. After today's visit will never be back. Menu has changed, with many of my favourites removed, items that are still on the menu have not been available for the last three visits (spanning 3 months), and to top it all off, there was a cockroach discovered in a steamer basket after we had finished the meal. When brought to their attention, no apology was given, it was simply removed from the bill. Very sad to say goodbye to my favourite yum cha venue.

Shanghai steamed meat dumpling was bad. The meat was very rough and minced. Dishes were a bit oily. The pot of hot tea was not strong enough.

I am absolutely disappointed with experience today. I have been a frequent come back local customer whenever i crave yumcha. tho service was not always great but foods were pretty good made me come back. However Today me and my friends visited and we all noticed that food taste has been significantly depreived and it was actually the most horrible food i have tasted in Brisbane. I have asked staff member whether owner has changed but he said onwer is same but chef has changed. There you go. Until they find new chef who can cook, I will never go back.

Good food but spoilt by other factors on my last visit a few years ago. On entering the restaurant, the manager saw us (an Indian family) and made rude monkey gestures to the kitchen staff while he greeted us. Felt like leaving then and there, but it was my brother's birthday dinner. We were also charged a public holiday surcharge, when there was no holiday. Can only hope this guy (thin face) is not working there anymore. Have had other good late night meals before.

I've actually been putting off writing this blog post, because I think The Manor is so good, I don't want to tell anyone about it! I certainly don't want to turn up next weekend and have to wait in line for an hour or two.So, if you have a hankering for awesome yum-cha, and you decide to visit The Manor, keep it on the down low and don't go bragging to all your friends ok.!?!..... P.S The Manor also do late night Yum Cha so I will be visiting soon for that!
Ch3ung_thach
This place was a joke. The waiter / manager or whoever it was , was such a prick the service put me off my food I honestly will never go back and hope no one else will experience it too. 0/10 for me.

The manor. I had the special fried rice and homemade spring rolls .. it was so delicous ..i only waited 5 mins for my order .. and the best thing about the restraunt is that it closes late .. like 2nyt was 1am .. so happy

Great chinese food. Wen there and had peking duck, stir fried spinach with garlic and salty fish fried rice - food tasted great - The Manor is one of the few reliable chinese restaurants in Brisbane where the food quality is always of a high standard - fresh and clean. Staff were friendly and price reasonable for the quality.

Yum Cha. If you go for the night time yum cha don't go til 8.30. We got there too early as we found it hard to find out what time it started.

GREAT. Had booked long before I read all the negative reviews, was thinking of not going.<br/>Eight of us at our table. From the moment we walked in we were looked after better<br/>than most other places we have been this year. Food was excellent and prices very<br/>reasonable. Would not hesitate to go again.

Food was dry, below average customer service, waitress seemed like she didn't want to be there.. Won't be back in a hurry that's for sure.

Terrible food and service, will never come visit again.

Don't waste your time. Poor choice. Waiters were rude and abrupt, received attitude when I queried what's in the chefs special fried rice. Waitress couldn't understand what I was asking. Waited half hour for my main to come out. Friends main didn't come, had to ask twice what's happening with it, was told 3rd time for us to start on my main, that second was still coming, had to explain we ordered separately because I couldn't eat what my friend chose, then miraculously it came out in no time after 1 hr of waiting. $2 steamed rice is literally 4table spoons of cooked rice. Too expensive. Received suck up compliments after paying the bill. Not coming back again, neither is my friend

Average fare. The Manor's decor is tired and in need of a facelift. The fish tanks were very dirty and the staff lacked enthusiasm for the job. The manager was quirky and the advertised four courses were served in record time - a variation on the theme of fast food. The entree was sticky and small and the calamari very chewy. The food was palatable but lacked the sparkle that previous bloggers raved about. I would not return.

Excellent Peeking Duck. We were not expecting great things after reading some of the reviews on here, because we had also bought a voucher. We were however very impressed. The food came out quickly, there was more than enough for two and it was great.<br/>We will definitely be going back.

The Manor Chinese. Best Chinese I have had in a long time. We went with a LivingSocial voucher which was for 3 coarse Peeking duck - one of my all time favourites. Because we were a group of 5, we also ordered some extra dishes not included in the voucher. The dumplings were perfect! The calamari with salt and chilli was light and delicious and the Szechuan chicken - another of my favourite Chinese dishes, was among the best I have had. After such a huge meal I was too full for desert, but I had a taste of my son's home made mango ice cream which was superb. The service was typical Chinese, but the food excellent. It was our fist time. It we will definitely be back!

Livingsocial at Manor Chinese. Went to the manor chinese for dinner on a livingsocial voucher. It was a very authentic experience. However, I felt like they were trying to rip us off. We had to keep asking for food from the voucher, which they forgot.<br/>Not enough duck to fill 12 pancakes provided, enough for 6. Quite tasty but small portions. The next dish san choy bow was greasy. It was okay but nothing special. The noodle dish was a joke. It was slimy. Really foul. Felt sick afterwards.
Joe
Very average food and we had a real d*ck head of a waiter who was trying hard to be funny but was just plain rude and annoying we were clearly ready to order andbhe knew it but would keep walking past the table telling us to keep waiting in a loud obnoxious voice I was ready to walk, then when we ordered I tried to refer back to the menu he snatched it off me. When he was pouring our wine he asked if he could try some?? Seriously! Then when we said we were done with the wine he asked again if he could have the rest of the bottle so we left it with him thinking we would never return

Dishonest - I don't want to patronize this business again!. I bought the Living Social voucher and went just days after it was initially listed. We had a fantastic experience. They brought the whole Peking Duck out and carved it in front of us, I got them to just carve the skin (with no meat - which is how authentic Peking duck should be) which they served that with 12 pancakes. The then brought out the San Choy Pow and that was tasty and then a good-sized noodle dish which was prepared with the left over duck meat. I loved it so much I went and bought more vouchers (for myself and as gifts for friends).<br/><br/>When we went back about a month later, they had pre-sliced the duck and it was only about half a duck. When I confronted the manager, he said that they were changing the way there were doing the deal. He said he was just obliged to provide 12 pieces of pancakes with duck. When I counted out the number of pieces of duck, I counted 8 (because I had put two smaller pieces - the size of 50 cent coins together), but the manager each piece should be counted separately, so that's how he was able to stretch it out get 12 pieces of duck. The San Choy Pow had less meat and noodle dish was also 1/4 the size of the dish we had the first time - of course, they were only using half a duck now! DISHONEST!!!<br/><br/>All Living Social voucher buyers should call Living Social on 1800548762 and complain (just need your email and name for identification). If enough people complain, Living Social will be forced to do something.

Went there after buying the living social evoucher but <br/>The manager needs to get an attitude fix, bullied my partner cause she didn't print the evoucher even though it clearly states that you can show the voucher on the smartphone. Duck was cold, the noodles were salty. Worst dining experience I've had for a long time, will not ever go back. WARNING!!!!!

Not impressed. We purchased 2 of the recently offered living social deals, the first voucher we used within a day or so of purchasing. My husband and I went alone the first time despite the voucher stating that it was for 2 - 4 persons, we were pleasantly surprised the first time we went, the duck for peking duck was carved in front of us and the serves were generous. We then had 6 substantial serves of duck san choi boy and finished with a duck and fried noodle dish that was quite large and which we could not finish. We returned tonight with 4 people believing after our first visit that sharing between 4 and then ordering a couple of mains and rice was a better option. We were extremely disappointed. The duck was not carved in front of us - the first time the peking duck pieces came from all of the duck what we received tonight would be lucky to come from 1/2 a duck. We asked when we arrived if we could forego the 3rd course instead to receive 8 san choi bou rather than the stated 6 - what we received was mostly onion with a small amount of duck, substantially less than what we received previously in 6 pieces. we ordered 2 other mains - average - plus a special fried rice which arrived 5 minutes prior to mains and cold when it arrived. We were so hungry by this stage we ate all the fried rice before the mains arrived and then had to order steamed rice also. The female waitress was unable to speak english but was rude/abrupt in her manner. All in all considering we have been to this restaurant many times over the years I would not go back!

So so tasty, if I see the voucher I'm buying it again!. Went there on a voucher, had a few duck dishes. The pancake wraps, a noodle dish and san choi bao. Will go back again and try the hotpot, looked amazing. Went again 16/12 service was wonderful, smiles from everybody, everything was great like last time, and the noodles were AMAZING yummy.

Average food Bad service. The food is still OK but the quality has dropped since 1 or 2 years ago.And don't expect service when you dine in the Manor. Manager Ben is very impolite as well as one of the waitresses. Both with a attitude. We had been a customer for 10 years since we were students, and now we will not come back.

Fabulous meal. Had great food last time so trotted off there again, this time on cudo voucher. No problems with the reservations at either end. We had the 4 course deal and it was all good- little steamed dim sum, a stir fried chicken dish with the yummiest deep fried broccoli greens (served with rice but couldn't stop picking at them) and finished with mango icecream that looked and tasted suspiciously like home made (I was expecting vanilla with a dollop of Mango syrup) all of this was served up with the owners great sense of humour. Only drawback is because of its popularity it was hard to chat over the noise so.......go there when you want bloody good Chinese not to chat :)<br/><br/><br/>-----27 Jun, 2013-----<br/><br/>Great Peking Duck. Great little find. My friend had never had Peking Duck so really enjoyed it. We went on a voucher so it was incredibly great value for money. after the pancakes there was Sang Choy Bow and then a stirfry noodle dish with the rest of the duck - very very nice but still room for some deep fried ice cream balls. Only fly in the ointment was the non communicative waitress who frowned through the whole service - I don't think she could speak English, annoying ALL the time, but the owner/manager had a bit of a sense of humour so made up for her. Also seeing a docket would have been nice for the extras instead of an amount scrawled on a piece of paper - you shouldn't have to ask prices for what you ordered to check ie wine, soft drink, ice cream etc. - just sayin............... but 10 out of 10 for the food and as it was crowded with chinese I don't think you get a better recommendation than that.

Long time eater, first time writer. First of all, everyone on here saying bad things, are wrong. As a frequent visitor of Yum Cha venues, The Manor is certainly one of the best. The food is delicious and the service is prompt. They go to extreme lengths to ensure anyone with seafood allergies is well catered for. David, the manager, is very welcoming and ensures a positive dining experience. If you are a yum cha fan, The Manor is a must.
The Invisible Food Critic
Disappointed & Greedy. Tonight we decide to have hotpot with a few good friends. All you can eat with 1 free abalone per person and 1 mud crab for the table, we thought it was going to be good. They first took out a small plate of abalones for six of us shortly after we made our order. We waited for the water to boil then placed all the abalones in because they take some time to cook. Approximately 5 mins into the boil, a lady staff jumped in without saying a word and scooped up one half cooked abalone and mumbled "there's one extra" then took it back inside the kitchen. We were shocked; apparently they accidentally gave us 7 instead of 6... Very unprofessional, without apologies and without excusing herself before fishing into customer's hotpot during cooking.<br/><br/>However we continued on because other staff were friendly & helpful. The food wasn't too bad, some were quite nice but some prepared dim sims were slightly undercooked. No warning was given after 2hr time limit, and when time to pay the bill, the girl going charged us for "tea money". We responded we only had hot water and not tea, hence how can you charge us $2 extra per person for "tea money"? The waitress apologized and was about to recalculate the order until the same lady who scooped up the abalone came up to her and said there's a teapot on the table, hence "tea money" is to be charged. Even the waitress told her we only had hot water + many other "paid drinks", but the lady responded $2 per person is for the "teapot"! We were all shocked (including the waitress). In the end I said never mind and left. <br/><br/>Every one of our families are long term customers of the Manor ever since it opened. Today you're being greedy to take my $2, no need for tomorrow, because you'll never see me again. Tonight Manors just had its 3rd strike. I rate it 3/10.

Conned, Cheated, and will never go again!. Yesterday night I and a bunch of my 14 friends went to Yum cha at the Manor; boy was it an experience that we would never forget. <br/>To cut the long story short, we were cheated of our money by the ruthless and dishonest wait staff. Usually at this yum cha you had to write down what you wanted to on a piece of paper, with quantities like 1,2,3,.... etc....<br/>When much more food came out than we ordered, we were shocked - like we didnt order this? why is the food coming out when we never ordered it? We checked our paper to realize that the wait staff had changed our order, adding more quantities to our order.!!!! RUTHLESS!!!<br/><br/>I seriously cant believe this restaurant which i have been to for yum cha for the past 5 years have pulled off such a disgraceful act. we complained and asked if we could check the bill.. The wait staff glared at us as we checked and we were 100% certain we did not order so many of each dish! <br/><br/>In my mind I was thinking are they seriously doing that bad to cheat customers of their money? What happened to customers' rights? We ended up paying a whopping $60 extra for the meal; and i vow to never return to this place ever again. It is very disheartening to see this happen; we were out for a birthday celebration; instead this celebration turned ugly and foul. <br/><br/>When we questioned the staff into why our bill added up to be so much; they said we didn't have proof, and gave many many excuses. Why should we need PROOF? Are they trying to proclaim that we need to take a photo of the bill before we order? Why should we have to do that when we were the ones cheated? Its just a pathetic excuse to get more money from us.<br/><br/>I strongly DISCOURAGE ANY ONE who wants to go there - WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND CHANGES YOUR ORDER?! Desperate people who want money do that. This restaurant is not reputable and really should be shut down. Words fail to describe how utterly disappointed and angry I and my 14 friends are. A celebration turned wrong.<br/><br/>Definitely do not recommend this place to ANYONE. (Unless you want to get cheated for your money!)

Tasty just pricey

Average food, Lousy service. If it wasn't because me and my friends were craving for dim sum for a long time, we would not end up eating here.<br/>when we arrived at 8.15pm and ask for dim sum, they said the food can only arrive in 15 minutes time. and so we sat and started picking our food and then they said the food will arrive in 10 minutes.<br/>the egg tart and char siew sow arrived shortly, cold.<br/>then the others arrived slowly.. all our food was served single handed with a frown on the face. It was hard for us to ask them to refill our pot of tea as well and to order extra food as they were busy washing dishes and moving things behind counter.<br/>porridge was only available at 9pm. verity of food was limited as well. <br/>Steam Dim Sum are supposed to be served first, then the fried all in one go. if this is not the way of Service, it's not dim sum.<br/>Not to mention, 3 girls ate $69.60.

Excellent. Very expensive, but the food was exceptional, and the service first rate.
Eugene Wee
Bad to worse. Very disappointed with the quality of their dim sums. Seem to be getting worse with every visit. Most likely the chef has changed. Ordered liu sar pau. but some custard bun came. complained and the excuse was the chef made the wrong order. so we requested a replacement but they said it was sold out. WTH?! we were the first customers for the evening yum cha! We also ordered some xiao long bao. All 10 dumplings that came were broken. And if you knew about xiao long bao, this is a mega fail. And in some places, you get a full refund if you are served such poor quality dumplings. We politely told the manager on duty but we given a dirty look as if we were purposely picking on them. I recommend traveling another 10min down Logan Road to another evening yum cha place for cheaper, better quality dim sums.

Food is great, service could be better. Felt a little intimidated by not knowing what everything was and the staff not being overly helpful in providing descriptions... They seemed frustrated that you were asking things. Learning curve I guess.

The Manor was my favorite yum Cha restaurant up until end of 2011. The food taste and quality had changed (almost appears like the chef had changed) and the quantity had decreased! I'm so dissapointed as they used to offer one of the best yum Cha in Brisbane.
Michael Kakellou
Never got to taste the food. After standing with my partner at the counter for over 10minutes in full view of numerous staff without any acknowledgment .Walked out.We were the only people there.Half hr after opening with a empty house &can't acknowledge yr only customers ??

7/10. The yum cha here is quite good, although not as good as it used to be. The prices have also gone up which is a bummer, but the food is still quite good. The owner is really sweet and remembers my friend and I whenever we go in and service is quick.
Maxi
Avoid at all cost. The dim sum yum cha is terribly poor. It's gone from bad to worse in a span of a few years. Used to be a local favourite, now it's a place you would want to avoid even if all the other places have closed. The table service is non-existance, the mid-age waitress are so rude and seem to avoid eye contact with patrons. It's the biggest turn-off. It's either too salty, no taste, hot dim sum serve cold, or even worse ---> Read here:<br/><br/>http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/brisbane-food-businesses-prosecuted-since-november-2010-20110810-1impw.html#ixzz1UgIAWqw6

Honestly, if you're craving a bite to eat post-10pm, think twice before grabbing a kebab or maccas and stop by the manor- they make some of the best yumcha in Brissy. The service may not be great and it's not all that cheap, but who cares at 1 in the morning? Order the steamed egg buns and shark fin soup dumplings. Their Peking duck isn't all that bad either. We love the manor!
Lookabookworm
Observe the yum cha times!. Just be careful when choosing Manor Chinese Restaurant as an evening yum cha destination; the yum cha menu doesn't actually start until about 9PM!<br/><br/>I made that mistake once, turning up at 7PM for dinner. I ended up having the regular a la carte, but still psychologically disappointing. Regardless, I've been twice and I enjoyed both times. There are a lot of Asians dining there, so it further proves its authenticity and quality.<br/><br/>The ambiance is alright. The food is very good. Can't comment on value; mum paid ;)
Carol
Food is great but service is the terrible. The food at manors always meets expectations and are priced reasonably. The yum cha served at night is authentic. <br/><br/>However, the biggest disappointment is the service, especially from the mid-aged waitress. She seems to be the leader of the service team, but she's extremely unprofessional and rude. She basically throws menu on the table, impatient in taking orders, ignores our indication for services, and slow in filling teapots, etc. This puts me off every time despite the authentic food and welcoming services from the restuarant manage and the rest of the service team.

DISAPPOINTED. Disappointed. some of the dim sim were not fresh.

Lovely. We went for Chinese New Year. Booked a liitle late and missed the Lion dance but the food was exquisite and very reasonable. Maitre d' was reallly attentive, service was great. Very child friendly as well. As westerners we all eat with chopsticks and crave authentic cuisine so we had to ask for the Chinese menu otherwise we may have been limited to nice, but western- style chinese.

One of the many late night yum cha joints popping up around Brisbane. Fantasic for midnight munchies. Try the egg custard buns .. Lai Wong bao ( to die for).
Linda E
The lobster was cooked in a smooth ginger and shallot sauce and it was perfectly fresh. The $300 meal was 'worth every dollar and cent I worked for'.
JV
The Manor is good ol reliable, an institution perhaps - one of the first to have midnight yumcha - the one we always expect to see open and can count on for quick service.
