Review Spoon Deli Cafe New Farm - Brisbane

Their juices are awesome, especially Immune Booster.... The spaces in the Cafe is wide open and the staff is very helpful. Loved the burger too.

Very good service and great food and very reasonable prices considering its location. The staff were accommodating and friendly. When I asked them to remake my coffee as it had way too much syrup in it, the request was received graciously, followed by an apology and then a replacement cup as soon as possible. Great seating with huge windows that let you warm up on those cold mornings. The selection of tarts, quiches, and other pre made meals is varied, tasty and well priced. A place to visit for sure.

BIG OPEN SPACE! Fits well with the James Street vibe. Acceptable price and taste, however it did take awhile for the food to come out.

Good little breakfast spot! Service and food really hit the spot! Nice one! 🙂

Recent reviews have me wondering what went wrong, but I got what looked like a regurgitated salmon eggs Benedict on a plate with a side of slightly undercooked potato rosti. It was definitely in the top of worst breakfasts I actually paid for. Staff were uninspired and bored except for the cashier who at least tried to be cheerful. This place appears to lack pride with a lack of any sort of quality control. Can recommend the fresh juice, but diner beware.

Should have checked the reviews before ordering. A 3.3 average would have given it away. The menu and prices seemed ok, until it arrived. Plain an dry burger, but super salty, with raw onions. And the chicken turkish was disgusting, mayo spread over the avocado, and a fully dried out fillet. Never again.
john britton
Had eggs Benedict, terrible burnt bacon Turkish bread not toasted eggs one hard one med. Have been there so many time and enjoyed, today will be our last plus mentioned it to a server who said nothing disappointing we will be letting our friends know. If you have never been try King Authers up the road .

Easily the worst coffee in Brisbane my taste buds almost died... Menu with no prices? Underwhelming food… I really really wanted to enjoy it… so much potential.. it hurts to give a review like this

I ordered a double cheese burger. Was presented with bareley a single pattie, no cheese, small bit of lettuce and no flavour.

Amazing staff, good food, good value for money in the local area.

Finished a task early in the morning around the area so dropped in for a quick brekkie. Maybe it was too early at 7:30am, there were not many tables occupied.
I ordered a flat white to go with its homemade banana bread with butter. Remember it was not very impressive on my last two reviews but it was very good this morning. Both food and beverage were prepared in good standard. Coffee was strong, bold with good aroma. Homemade banana bread was soft in texture and sweet in taste.
Previous rating:
Mar 2019, 3/5; July 2015 3.5/5

Service was great with friendly staff and the coffee strong in the aroma. Many selections for breakfast from the menu and the fridge near the counter. We order the Spanish omelette, quiche from the fridge, eggs and toast, caffe latte, long black and daily fruit n veg juice. All the dish are well cooked and extra plates offered without asking. The cafe is open in space, clean, very child-friendly and easy access to free parking.

Good food, friendly staff and dog friendly

Not the best experience I’ve had, I had very high expectations for this place, setting and layout was good. But the let down was standing at the counter waiting nearly 5 minutes to be served, the girl who served us was unfriendly, rude and clearly didn’t want to be working. Sat down waited 30 minutes for our coffees to arrive and the coffees tasted burnt and cold so we complained and the girl said that’s how our coffees are made ( I’ve been a barista 8years and I know this is wrong), then waited over an hour to receive food which is not exceptable and to end this cretec off food was awful, I ordered the salmon eggs Benedict, my brother ordered the Spanish omelette also didn’t have anything nice to say about that.

Had probably my worst meal ever at spoon. Tasteless, and dissatisfying. Service was slow, the food came to the table in fits and starts and when it arrived tasteless. Won’t be back ever!!!

Paid $22 for a so called 'wake up burger'. The only thing that woke me up was the staggering price for what you got. A bun with a slice of bacon and egg and one lettuce leaf. What a complete rip off! Wont go back.

We came here and sat at a table and started looking at the menu. Ridiculous prices but hey we ordered anyway.

Then we had to line up just to get served. That took about 10 minutes. And then a 40 minute waiting game.

Food came out, we had smashed avo and 2 OJs. They came out with both smashed avos, cut into little slices? Toast with avocado literally smacked on. Boring. Disgusting. Looks like we were eating left over crust.

You also forgot one of the orange juices. So we waited for that. And then you say there is no glasses left so we got it in a plastic cup - which doesn’t bother me. But who runs out of glasses?

Anyway at least there was a cool breeze and good aircon I guess.

Ridiculously over priced! I ordered fruit and yoghurt for $16 and this is the size of the yoghurt. One tablespoon!!! I can’t believe how they can justify their pricing. Seriously disappointed.

Great coffee, food was very good and well priced, especially for this area. We all had icecreams for dessert that were special. Dark chocolate waffle cones and dripping in dark chocolate ganache. They even decorated the kids cones with stars and M&M's. They were all so nice there.

Fantastic lunch. The food was awesome and fast. Had a spicy chicken salad meal and a big fresh juice (recovery juice). Very friendly and much cheaper than any of the other places I've tried anywhere around here.

Had the best bacon benedict I've had for years. Coffee was perfect too, both of them. My partner had the big breakfast which he loved, but I had to help him finish it :).

The staff were lovely too. The price was great, especially for the quality of food and the service we got.

Getting a juice is like getting blood out of a stone. Had to order twice. Waiting long time. Was brought someone else's. Wouldn't come again. Too many choices in new farm to come back here.

Today while I was waiting for my acai bowl, my partner went to the store in front of it looking for a vegan snack.

When I got my bowl she was happily holding a bag with a vegan cheesecake inside.

The cheesecake was one slice of lemon cheesecake and one slice of blueberry cheesecake, both vegan and gluten free.

They were both okay, the blueberry cheesecake was a bit too sweet but the lemon one had a nice zestiness to it and I enjoyed it the most. The texture was quite different from what you would expect of a cheesecake, it was more like a caramel slice texture but still quite pleasant. Overall they were cheap and had nice flavour to it, would rate them between 3.5 and 4.

Overall, I didn't try the coffee or much of their food, but their cakes and snacks look interesting enough for a second visit.

Popular with shoppers walking the James St strip looking for a quick coffee or some easy food. The cabinets boast cakes, pies, filos, lasagne etc.
Plenty of drinks in cabinets along with coffees and a small menu of offerings.
We chose a slice of cake each with a coffee. Both were ok- not amazing and not all that fresh either. The usual stuff but one of us tried the gluten free strawberry cheesecake. I ate a raw cake slice.
Truly the worst breakfast I have ever had. Sour dough bread inedible, poached eggs like bullets. I would never recommend this place to anyone.

Our 2nd visit and very disappointed with the service from the young lady taking breakfast orders.
All I wanted was a simple bacon, eggs and toast and was told this would cost more than if I ordered the Big Spoon Breakfast which was bacon, eggs, chipolatas, chilli beans, mushrooms, Rosti and toast. Apparently I was building a meal. All up cost us $64.90 for 2 breakfasts and 2 flat whites.
Won't be visiting again. We'll find somewhere else when next we visit New Farm.
Tastytreat
I obviously didn't hate it as much as much as most of the other reviewers....
That being said, I think I know where they are coming from.
We were there very early, so could easily see how the wheels would come off, particularly with the service.
The food was actually pretty ok/decent.
I had mushroom Benedict. Hollandaise was tangy & really good & everything else was above passable, (except the eggs slightly overcooked).
Coffee was watery & pretty bad & service was not impressive at all. There was an underlying tinge of disdain from the staff & they seemed harassed & a little surly.
There are better options around.
Thomas McClifty
Thanks for my wilted spinach, cold toast and bacon that I could have used to sand wood, which could have been used to build an ark in the time it took to receive my awful meal. No point taking it back, just wanted to leave. Ashamed to have your pathetic, over-priced breakfast inside me.
Gina Anne
I love waiting 45 minutes for soggy scrambled eggs, one piece of underwhelming bread, and a raw tomato. I'm filled with rage/regret/hatred, and I would like to thank you for ruining my day off.
Dino Lo
terrible. just terrible. such a nice location and is wasted on a place like that. everything looks old and it taste old. and the coffe is not good either.
Nadine
Wow this was so incredibly bad. To start the avo on toast was alone $16.90 but I had high hopes that meant it was excellent and a generous portion.. I got two small slices of very overcooked toast with very thin spreads of an over ripe brown avocado. It was disgusting. I could not believe the girl wasn't embarrassed to hand me it.
Jenny
Chia tea is good. Staffs are fine. Salad is overly dressed with mayo. Too heavy for someone who want a salad as a healthy option. Tasty though.
The Food Oracle
Probably the best Spoon I've been to. The barista people were really lovely and service was prompt considering how many people were in the Cafe. Great spot and nice spacious set up. Some of the hot breakfasts were ridiculously overpriced but my bircher was well priced and tasty. Coffee was great

We enjoyed a very pleasant lunch at Spoon. Staff were friendly and helpful with my dietary requirements, food was good (with the crunchiest beer battered chips I've ever had), good coffee, and comfy seating next to the giant windows. We'll definitely be back.
Haras
Coffee was less than average. Service was unfriendly and I felt as though I was a burden. Shame. The space is nice. Can't say I'll be back though.
Indeahgrace
Terrible service the staff was very rude and rushed us to order when we hadn't even been verbally told there was a menu. Food was tasteless and disappointing, except the fries they were quite nice. Milkshakes and coffee were average. We have tried it twice and were disappointed both times.
The Hiding Foodster
The Spoon's hot chocolate - thoroughly chocolatey, with well made, steamed and frothy full cream milk, is just the job in these cooler winter months.
You have three size options - 8, 12 and 16oz - and there's a white hot chocolate option also.
Better still, you can add a marshmallow for an extra 30 cents, which really adds something grand while rekindling a childhood memory. Simplistic brilliance that could rise to yet another level with some added cream, if that sort of thing does it for ya. Get one...
Manimik
The pumpkin and amaretto risotto was really delicious. In the side, we ordered beer battered chips and that was also tasty. The paper menu was really confusing to understand in the first shot. Would recommend something digital for the menu.

Came here for brekky since we had some time to burn before work. Was fairly quiet for 10am in the morning! Their breakfast menu is pretty good. Covered quite a lot of items. From toast and eggs to crossiants to museli. They had it all.

I ordered their hearty breakfast. For $22, that was the most pricey thing on their menu. My friend ordered the museli and yogurt.

After 15 minutes of waiting, our food was brought out. My breakfast didnt really impress me. Ive had better big breakfasts elsewhere for cheaper than what they charged. The sourdough bread was a bit overly crunchy, the sausages were average. Tastes like something Woolies or Coles would sell. Egg was very soggy. Bacon was ok. Mushroom was lovely and their potato rosti was very bland.

The museli came out in a big gloop on the plate. They also gave you a little pitcher of milk to pour over the museli. Well. It wasnt very good. As you can tell in the 3rd pic... I got a bit bored and started playing with my friends' food :D.

All in all... Not a big fan. Probably wont come here for breakfast again!

Total dollars spent between 2: $45

Had a lovely b'fast here with the family on the weekend.
The staff seemed very pleasant and everyone in our party had a great time.
I had the field mushrooms which I enjoyed very much. My husband and his family mostly had B&E's or Egg's bene's which they all enjoyed.
The coffee was very good, and one of better ones I've received up here in Brisbane.
Will surely come back here with our whole group next time in town again.

20 minute wait for coffee, 50min wait for meals,
Pancakes were burnt, big breakfast was tiny, eggshell in eggs. This place is a joke. Will never go here again. Go to campos across the street even if you have to wait 45mins for a table.

Spoon...more like give me a knife so I can end this terrible suffering. Is it possible to give a rating lesser than 1.0? I feel 1.0 is a little generous in my case.

If you want an accurate summary of this 'cafe', here it is: worst service I have ever had the displeasure of receiving, expensive considering the meals are minuscule (not an exaggeration. Really), accompanied by rude and unwelcoming staff who have clearly learnt from their ill-mannered manager. I ordered two servings of calamari, one juice, and one coffee. Coffee came out after about ten minutes, juice was nowhere in sight. After around 20 minutes my daughter asked a staff member to check on it, and it was clear it had been forgotten. If she had not asked for it, I'm sure it would have never arrived. After waiting about 30+ minutes for my food I tried to cancel my order, however the cashier told me all diners are warned of a '40 minute waiting period due to the busyness of the joint'. Well, not even a quarter of the tables were occupied and there were most likely more staff than customers so ??? After a long 30 minute wait we received our food, however I felt I needed a telescope to accurately see what I was about to eat; it was so tiny. I actually only received four pieces of calamari and a few bits of salad, bear in mind I paid $18 for this. I ate the microscopic meal in front of me in about 10 minutes, and I was soon out of there as I had to pick my daughter up from work, and also wanted to leave the goddamn place.

So, I called the establishment, respectfully yet firmly stating in detail that the service was very poor. My hopes were that I would get an apology back, perhaps be refunded, but mostly I just wanted them to realise they could improve in many areas; I hoped to insight my personal experience to better help them handle their business. I understand it is difficult to run a business, but that is no excuse for the disgrace that is Spoon. During my phone call, the person I was dealing with said they would call me back sometime in the coming week. A week passed, and I had to call him to follow up. I was sent an email with a $20 gift voucher and no apology of substance. I replied back stating I did not want a gift voucher, because I do not wish to return back. What I got in return was a complete joke, a small novel discrediting me. Some guy whom I won't name, claimed to 'review surveillance footage and interview staff', accusing me of lying and saying I waited only 22 minutes for my meal. He also replied 'we are not McDonalds' and 22 minutes was more than a reasonable amount of time to be waiting at a busy intercity cafe. Ummm?? Well, at least a bunch of 15 year olds can properly run a business. AND I've been to plenty of busier cafes where the staff are still friendly and the food arrives in under 15 minutes (and is not overpriced) during their peak times. I went up to the cashier to try and cancel my meal, when the staff member told me, "everyone was told there was a 40 minute wait, your food is coming now." I was definitely not advised this, otherwise I would not have ordered in the first place. My feedback email also stated, "you got your food 3 minutes later, that's a pretty amazing response time if you ask me." Ummm hello??? We only got it 3 minutes later because I said something! The poor woman at the table next to us, ordered BEFORE us and received her meals AFTER us??? They just had food from the cabinet too which just needs to be heated up! The email I received was extremely unprofessional and he was responding with such a smartarse tone. He ended up cancelling my voucher too since he thought I was being ridiculous.

I have been to Spoon a couple of times before, with no problems but I can assure you I am never going back after this. Unwelcoming, rude, overpriced, poor service. Disappointing.
Ducked in here for a Sunday breakfast and it was average at best. Food had a 20 minute wait and coffees were upto an hour long wait...even though the cafe was half empty. When the food came out, the eggs were rubbery, and the poached eggs tasted of vinegar. The bacon on the big breakfast had been replaced with ham and nothing was mentioned about this substitute when ordering. For the price the food was not great. Service was the highlight of the trip, and the setting was rather peaceful.

Stopped in for a quick coffee. Menu is pretty pricey. These piccolos were $4 each. Coffee wasn't actually too bad. Service was relatively fast but felt like one of the masses didn't feel very welcome.

How hard can this be?? I was dining alone and never actually got my coffee to have with my breakfast, when I went to the counter to get my money back, I overhead a table near me say they had been waiting for 25 mins and couldn't wait any longer as they needed to go to work. Just as I thought that was just two incidences... I then went over to the fruit shop only to hear a couple arguing near the dairy section about their wait and who chose that venue in the first place!!!. SPOON, You need to do something about this...surely this can't be the hardest thing surely. For some reason the Eggs Benedict is now on one slice of bread...not happy with the change at all. The upside, staff were perfectly capable and friendly.
ToorakM
Would love to review positively - but this place took over 25 minutes to get served while holding about 4 drinks - got an ice cream for the little one that was liquid when paying. So much potential... but after waiting so long to get served we couldn't bother eating 😕
Anita Weiss Leone
Worst salads I've had and too pricey. Service is relatively quick although only a handful of staff are friendly. Only eat here for convenience and a casual bite but really it is a waste of money considering their small sizes.
Skye
Biggest rip off. $12 for two small eggs, smallest piece of toast and some avo. It would have been cheaper to buy a loaf of bread and a carton of eggs. Nice BBQ sauce though.
Jess Rocke
Poor service, food average (even after it was sent back once), coffee sub standard after waiting 15 minutes. Not sure they have run a cafe before...
DianaW
Was surprised to get a decent coffee here as I have had previous failures with the other Spoon chains in the area. Coffee came out hot & strong with a good crema. Also had a great muffin which tasted deliciously home made, soft, moist & fluffy. Impressed with the other sweet treats on offer too. You can get a cake & coffee deal for $10 & that includes all cakes on display. Cool deal!

Tasty but very small servings. The food was very tasty but $42 for 2 cups of tea, 2 serves of oatmeal each of a large tea cup size and 2 slices of fruit toast... Slightly too hipster and not enough value. Not coming back...

Since changing owner a great cafe. Highly recommend!. Since the cafe changed owner last year it is now an excellent cafe. The staff are very friendly and the owners lovely. Great service, I recieved my food quickly. The food was very nice and reasonably priced. Highly recommend!

At last!!. I'm glad that Spoons is under new management because a lot of people I know and myself had stopped going. Under the previous owners the service was terrible and the food average; which is such a shame because the location is lovely.

Let's see how the new management get on and hope they do well. We will go down for breakfast sometime and see. Hopefully than we will start making it a regular Sunday haunt as before.

Great location. Friendly staff. Yummy Eggs Benedict. Lovely new owners!. Spoon on James St has new owners...finally! and in a short time you can see they are bringing much needed LOVE into their food and service. I had Eggs Benedict with ham, and the hollandaise was delicious! perfect poached eggs and beautifully crafted coffee to compliment my meal. Further changes are in store with new decor and menu in sight! will come back to this old favourite...lovely helpful staff who seem to care about you to! I

Waited 10 minutes in line, and then couldn't order my choice which is displayed on the menu because it's apparently out of date. We had to find a clear table amongst the debris (which wasn't a concern for the wait staff) only to wait too long for bland big breakfast. Juice was a weird flavour combo. We won't be back.
Kookydesigner
No oil. A Mediterranean Deli Cafe serving dry toast with the mushrooms, asked for some olive oil to put on it, came back with butter as they "were out of oil". Plenty on the shelf. Weird. Won't be back.

Nice lunch but the counter blokes attitude!. We come pretty regularly and the counter food is good and the atmosphere is great. The guy at the counter though, what an attitude!
Phoenixruns
Excellent lunch. The coffees always great so often end up here for lunch during the week. Chilli chicken sanga with avocado & roasted tomato that was to die for and they toasted the bun for me too. Yum.
Staff were really friendly and it was pretty quick even though they were busy.
Tallyvalley
Nice meal. Relaxed. Good coffee.. Great eggs Benedict . Eggs cooked perfectly. Great coffee. Very relaxed comfortable atmosphere.

Don't invest your money here!. As a regular customer used to enjoy coming here for lunch or coffee, but as off Christmas '13 the service and goods took a turn for the worst. Impatient staff with long lines to order. Long waits for food or even just a coffee!! Over-milked cappuccino and sickly sweet caramel latte, left not even finishing half and $10 wasted. After consistently bad goods and service, will not be visiting again.
Lucky Ariyasena
Avoid at all Costs!!!. Spoon at James street provides consistently bad service. Staff have a poor attitude that must permeate from the top (gotten worse since Christmas). They need a cultural change where they treat customers better. Average wait time for a coffee is between 20 to 30 mins. The food is very average but the coffee is below average. I will never be going back.
WDW
This morning I was in at Spoon New Farm. So disappointing! The line was substantial, the kitchen looked to have 3 chefs in it and the coffee machine had 2 on. There was also a young girl running food etc. The staff called out to the manager for help (who seemed to be doing nothing in the retail corner), & she replied with no..,you should be doing this all your selves !!!!! What a cow.,.what a bad manager. She should have got in there and helped with the rush. Poor customer service.
Rfassett
Why does anyone go there?. This cafe provides the worst service I have ever experienced. Stupidly I have been back there several times so I can at least say they are consistent. Basil Fawlty would be very impressed. The food is average but the coffee good. They only have one high chair which is silly as there are many families there with small children. I don't know how the place survives.
Caroline Shelverton
I was treated appallingly by the owner of spoon James Street... She reduced me to tears after i left the counter and told me not to get 'snippety' with her when I was politely ordering breakfast meals. She basically argued with me in front of other customers!
Then she gave me several glaring looks while I was sitting there waiting for the wrong meals to arrive over 30 minutes later.

I have never experienced such revolting service in my life!

NEVER going back.

Where to even begin. When.... Where to even begin.

When 2 friends and myself walked into the cafe today we stood at the counter for about 5 minutes before one of ur rude waitress' decided to serve us.

I ordered a simple Filo and chips. My friends ordered similar things. (This is my review so I won't speak on their behalf)
I went to pick up the drink that I purchased aswell to find the fridge wasn't even working, when I consulted the waitress again she stated "yeah someone's to stinge to get it fixed" and handed me a glass of ice.

Firstly that's ur employer who puts food on your table, I'm sure he would love to hear his/her staff say that to their face.
Once we sat down our table was a little
Dirty, not a huge issue to me but nether the less adds to the dramatic flare of this site.
I noticed our food was taking a while and that customers who ordered well after us had got their food first. I sat in
Silence waiting, as I ordered first is assumed I would be served first but no, I was last, not only was I last I was also served the comeplete wrong thing along with my friends food being wrong. However we did recieve a complementary side dish or sarcasm and rudeness from the waitress.

She arranged for the food to be remade. I noticed my FILO this time was microwaved... Didn't realize I was paying rediculous money for a 30 second zap when there was 3 chefs on.

When my pastry finally came out, I received another side of attitude from your staff aswell as a complimentary cola, still hot but none the less a nice remark.
I also noticed how there was no real manager on duty, how I noticed was ur chefs blatantly stole out of your fridges drinks to quench there thirst, didn't realize you were giving out free 1 ltr bottles of Aqua Pana, which costs quite a bit to stock.

Overall I have never in my life been so embarased to eat with friends in an "upmarket" place like James street.
You staff and single handedly turning this once flourishing street of culture and class into a crappy corner store.

On a side note my chips were amazing once they finally came out. And the young waitress who had just come back from her break really made experience a little bit better, say from a 0 to a 1 out of 10.
Hopefully this review is helpful to your store and you actually pay attention to it. I wasn't the only one complaining.
Gary.davies
Hopeless. Poor service and poor quality food.
Went to Spoon for breakfast.Wait staff took 15 minutes to clear the previous customer's order from our table. Bacon wasn't cooked at all - virtually raw. One tiny piece of un-toasted toast and two wet poached eggs - all this for $16. Wouldn't recommend Spoon for anything - over-priced and poor quality.

Worst Dining Experience Ever. Upon returning to James street, we decided we would re-visit Spoon again as Campos had a 40 minute wait. Our previous encounters with spoon had been less than pleasing, but we thought we would give it one last shot.

Upon arrival a waiter walked pasted and gave us an overly nasty look as we walked inside, no welcome or anything. We took seats on the high bar and browsed through the menu. As we got up to order a couple slotted in front of us, splitting my partner and I in two. This did not phase me as it was going to be easier paying separately. My partner almost aways orders the same thing from wherever we go for brekky - French Toast and and iced coffee. After being at the counter for about five minutes, the cashier finally managed to compute such a simple order. I waited whilst the order for the orderer of the people infront of me was put into the sales system again, taking an unnecessary amount of time. After the same cashier, she repeated the order to the couple and they too shook their heads and had to reiterate that they wanted two breakfasts and two coffees, not just one of each. This took another 2 minutes for her to fix. Finally it was my turn to order; Bacon & Eggs with a side of Haloumi & tomato relish and a chocolate malted milkshake. This took the cashier easily 4 minutes to put into the sales system, then reasking me what drink I had ordered. By the time I got back to my partner waiting at the bar, he had received his drink and within a few minutes also received his breakfast - prompt service for this meal was the only upside of our experience -. It was another 10 minutes until I received my milkshake, in which was plain chocolate with two malteesers in the bottom, far from a propper malted milkshake. Another 10 minutes passed and a waitress brought me a plate of food which was far from what I ordered. On my plate was one piece of toast, two poached eggs, a tomato and haloumi; no bacon or relish. I alerted the waitress that this wasn't what I ordered and her response was simply that my order had been put through wrong - no effort was made to correct this or return my meal for what I actually ordered. I continued to eat the meal in front of me which was far worthy of what I paid; Two overly hard poached eggs, haloumi that had been left for far too long before being plated up and had turned to a plastic rubbery consistency and one piece of hard as rock, cold toast.
Easily the worst dining experience I have never encountered, would recommend the extra 5-10 minute drive to either Tenneriffe or New Farm for a edible brekky and some sufficient service.

Worst service ever, being located in one of the best brisbane spot doesn't allow you to be rude and arrogant! I used to love the pastry but I will never return! To the staff and manager : Go back to hospitality school and learn manners!
Chris Richards
Food was ok (could have made better my self) but counter service was crap! Rude when taking order and walked away 3 time while we were placing the order.

It's the little things, unpolished cutlery which had streak marks, when the waiter set my table he handled both knife and fork by the ends you eat with, I had to sit at an uncleared table which took a long time to be rectified. One waiter walked past me and another uncleared table TWICE without such as a hint of interest at my presence. I will not be back.

WOULD YOU LIKE A BAD ATTITUDE WITH THAT?. My daughter and I were having lunch at Spoon Newfarm recently (James Street) and ordered the "Saffron Scented Paella" from the menu board. A more accurate description would be "Saffron Scented Paella WITH SEAFOOD," in which case, as my daughter is anaphylactic to seafood, we would not have ordered it. When the dish came out, full of prawns and mussels, we were both shocked. We informed our waiter of the problem, who spoke to the head chef, who spoke to the manager (Joy) who offered us a sandwich in exchange. As my daughter also has Coeliac Disease, she couldn't have a sandwich, so she offered us a Fish Cake (interesting suggestion for someone who is allergic to seafood!). She then offered a green salad. I asked for a refund of our $23, which she refused. I then asked if we could have $23 worth of something else (GF cake, coffee etc) which she also refused. Her argument was that the table menu states the seafood content of the paella, however, as there is not table service at this store, we had only seen the menu board located immediately behind the register where orders are placed, which, as stated, describes the dish as Saffron Infused Paella. The manager even said that this has happened before _ and yet no-one has thought to fix the problem???!! Needless to say, we left the store very unhappy - $23 less in my purse and no food in her stomach. I am absolutely shocked at how poorly this was handled by the manager, who obviously has no concept of providing customer service. Her wait staff, on the other hand, were very apologetic.
You know the old saying – happy customers tell 1 of their friends, unhappy customers tell 10!!! The problem would have been easily handled by simply refunding our money. We were intending to buy coffees and cakes to take with us anyway. In 18 years of dealing with a child with food allergies I have never had such a dreadful experience. Joy ( who is anything but joyful ) is obviously in the wrong line of work and I shudder to think what poor customer service values she is instilling in her staff. After contacting the Director of the company, I visited today to obtain my refund. Sad to say, neither the misleading sign nor the Manager's bad attitude had changed. She offered no apology for her previous mistake, and simply muttered to me "You can have it." Well, you know what Spoon Deli, by the looks of all of the poor service reviews you have on this forum, you should be called "Wooden Spoon Deli," because you certainly come last in the service department!

I visited Spoon in Fortitude Valley on Friday for breakfast. I was subjected to the worst customer service I have ever encountered.

I attempted to order the Devonshire tea special and was told very abruptly by the blonde lady at the counter that 'scones won't be ready for another hour'. I tried to be understanding because because I knew this was a slightly unusual request at 7.50am, however a blackboard next to the counter advertised this special so I thought it was available. The lady serving us seemed harassed and cross so I glanced up quickly at the menu above and tried to order the muffin. She immediately snapped 'which one?' and, being unaware that there would be more than one option as the board didn't suggest this, I asked her what types they had. I was informed that the muffins of the day were advertised on a blackboard around the other side of the glass cabinets. Taken aback by her rudeness I asked again what muffins I could choose from and was told very rudely 'I don't know, you'll have to look'. I walked away to check the board and the blonde woman muttered 'For God's sake!' loudly enough for my friend to hear.
After this ordeal we sat down and realised we had not asked for water. My friend got up to find a bottle and asked a red haired waitress where she might find it. The waitress snapped 'cant you see I'm too busy to help you?' and walked away.
Our experience only became worse when the coffee and food arrived, or rather, did not. We waited 20 minutes for two coffees, one of which arrived cold and an undercooked, doughy muffin. My friend's cheese and leek pie was forgotten and she had to go inside to remind them 10 minutes after everything else arrived. The waitress (not the red haired one) to her credit was apologetic however she informed us the mistake was because they were so busy.
The tables were barely half occupied.
Not impressed. Rude staff, disorganised service and poor food and coffee.

Old stale food and terrible service. I ordered the corn fritters for lunch and when they arrived they did not look very appealing. The taste was worse. The fritters were obviously old as they were hard, dry and stale. When I told the staff they just took the plate away without apology or a word. I will never eat here again.

Spoon James Street. Quick to be served, however that is the only positive. My eggs Benedict was served cold. Poached eggs had hard centres. Salmon was not very attractive and the whole dish was too salty. It is unlikely that I will be back to this local cafe after too many substandard visits.

Market Fresh. Good location and interesting style. Coffee was only ok. Food was nice and homemade. I had a single vegetarian risotto ball @ $9. Think they may be needing a revamp if they hope to keep their status as a leader in the Brisbane Deli Cafe scene.
Katherine
I am a little confused here, price is $$ for what you get. I guess because it's in James Street. This would seriously be empty if it was in the burbs.

15 mins to heat up a pie and make a milkshake. 5 staff, 2 customers. And $15 too. Seriously? The 28% doesn't surprise me.

I have been to Spoon quite a few times because because of the decent coffee but every single time I have been, the service has always been bad.
The waiters and waitresses are slow and forget the little things I ask for and it is always disappointing when such a nice place with decent food and drinks has such bad service.
I hope all the workers picks up their game!!!

Suprisingly good.. Despite all the negative reviews, I've only ever had good experiences with Spoon. Don't expect super quick service if it's 1pm and everyone's out for lunch! The coffee is on the better side of average but that's acceptable. The salads are fresh and yummy and I've found the service to be friendly and accomodating. If you just want something to eat and a quick coffee, it's great.

Good Food & Coffee. Quite surprised by all of the negative reviews. I notice that most are regarding poor service.

I found the food to be top notch and quite reasonable for the portion size. The long black I had was just right and served within a reasonable time frame.

However, I would say I found the staff a bit abrupt.

I had the eggs Benedict this morning. I had tried them here before and been pretty happy, but today was atrocious. The sauce was split with no flavour.
I won't be coming here again

WORST SERVICE I have ever experienced!!!!!!!!. I have never experienced such bad customer service in my life since I went to Spoon at James street. After being a loyal customer of Spoon East Brisbane, I tried James street today for breakfast.
My meal came with two eggs, two rashes of bacon, side salad and one skinny tiny piece of sourdough toast.
I asked for another piece of toast as its usually what I get at east Brisbane. When I asked I was told "this is how it comes" and if I wanted more toast I would have to pay and extra $3.50, guys its the cheapest ingredient on the plate!!!
I was told every franchise if different. I felt like I wasn't asking for much considering we had to ask for our coffees 3 times after waiting at least 30 mins and then re tell the staff what we ordered.
We ended up paying the ridiculous $3.50 for extra toast, but once it finally arrived all my food was stone cold, so what was the point? I was so frustrated and felt like the manager was extremely belittling to myself and my friend. I explained to her I wasn't happy and I was going tell people about my experience and never come back she seemed not too worried.
For the measly cost of a slice of bread, they have lost a customer. I feel sorry for the other franchise owners of Spoon as their hard work and impeccable reputation is being ruined by the James Street cafe.

Spoon.... Perhaps rusty spoon? This place has been around since the James st precinct started... And back then the place was great.... But now 10 plus years on the place looks dirty... The staff all have dirty uniforms and the 15min wait for a take away coffee ... Not so good..... Spoon.... Time for a revamp? New staff? ... There is so much better out there now!

Average. These guys seriously have no concept of time. EVERY time I go (and I only go because I work near by) they take FOREVER! I have honestly not been somewhere where the staff seem to be living in their own time zone. Its a lovely venue but the food is pretty over priced.
K
Overpriced and average service. This place should work on their cafe / restaurant quality as the deli is very well set up, nice and open and interesting gourmet foods (and not as ridiculously priced as the market next door). I looked around at the deli first and wondered what all the negative reviews were about. But when it came time for actual eating, it made more sense. The waitstaff seem like they have better things to do (no cutlery etc). I ordered a muffin and friend an open omelette (obviously different cooking/heating times involved) but it's just bad practice to have meals come out that far apart. I had to finish my muffin before it got cold then we just sat there for about 10 minutes at least waiting for the rest of the food. Wasn't even that good, for $20 an omelette one would expect something special. While it tasted good, I could whip up something of that quality at home in 10 minutes for a fraction of the price.
Rob
It's OK. The deli part of spoon is always interesting to walk around and have a look the restaurant part is just OK i can't decide if there lack of pre made food is good or not on one hand it means everything is made fresh on the other it means there's nothing quick to buy if you in a hurry
the staff at spoon are not fast on there feet at all there is a bit of a wait for food so your grateful when the food gets there
chips and aioli are just yummy and spoon does them well in fact this spoon was the restaurant that introduced me to aioli and im thankful to them for that i found the menu is a little too trendy trying a little too hard if this was my restaurant i would make some simpler choices on the menu the best part about spoon it is literally meters from the best gelato in Brisbane go to spoon for lunch and enjoy a gelato from quench afterward

A shocker!. A pot of tea, $4, consists of a large open topped glass of hot water with half a teaspoon of tea leaves in a strainer at the side. Are they kidding?

Poor service, mediocre food and limited selections. Waited for at least twenty minutes for the food. I would've been happy to have waited if it were busy..except it wasn't. Others who ordered after received their foods first! Finally had to ask one of the waiters to check our food. Not only that, our table was still dirty! No apologies, no smile, just 'oh' and 'cleaned' our table. Food was basically just reheating and toasting. Don't waste your time in going. People probably eat there just based on convenience and location.

Horrible Service. As a customer who frequented Spoon for the nice coffee, I was appalled by the service and attitude of the staff that happened on a regular basis. From waiting at the counter to order for minutes while the staff had conversations and blatantly ignored the customers to being talked back to when simply requesting good clean service. I will make a point to never return to spoon.
Georgia
I come here on a regular basis mainly for the great coffee. Today we came for food and it was atrocious. The service was appalling, waited 30 minutes for a sandwich and the scones that I ordered arrived promptly but were hard as rocks. I could've thrown them at someone and knocked them out. Please pick up your game or you'll lose a very valuable customers.

Nice food, poor service. Had some lovely eggs benedict (with mushrooms) for breakfast on Tuesday morning, which was quite nice. The experience was spoiled by the service - waitress and cashier were both quite rude. Great location, nice decor. Poor choice of staff.

Valentine's Day Shocker. My husband and I went to Spoon at James St Markets for breakfast this morning to celebrate Valentine's Day. What a mistake! Not a place to take a loved one. To start with, my husband's breakfast came out on its own, a good 10 minutes before the coffee that we ordered. After he had finished his overpriced Eggs Benedict, we waited for another 15 minutes for my breakfast (a Mango Smoothie) but it never came at all. During this period, we did try to get the attention of the waitress, but she was clearly incompetent and confused. By this time, we had to leave for work. On the way out we politely requested our money back for the smoothie we never got. To our absolute amazement and horror, we were completely berated by the cashier who said she was too busy and that she didn't bring dishes out in any particular order (or at all, it would seem). Shamed by the crowd, now amused at the cashiers abhorrent manner, the cashier finally refunded us the price of the smoothie, stating "I won't do it next time." Her manner was disgraceful and embarrassing. There will not be a next time.

Food is uninspiring and overpriced, service is rude, the only redeeming feature is the location. Not recommended

I went for breakfast this morning and I couldn't be happier to see somewhere like spoon open today. The lady at the till was very helpful with my order and the food and coffee came promptly. The staff were very friendly and I will certainly be back!

Orgasmic eggs benedict. A Sunday morning delight with great coffee. I have to recommend to my friends the eggs benedict from soon deli cafe. spinach and florentine mushrooms cooked just so... With waitress ground pepper (too fine) just a lovely taste to start my Sunday thank you spoon deli... You got one absolutely right

Luvly lunch plus eye candy. I really enjoyed my risotto plus i got to see new farms finest looking people ...what a treat. Spoon deli is a very casual place but seems to attract some of the hottest people around here. I recommend it

Absolutely Terrible - no customer service at all. Overpriced coffees that never arrived!! When ordering coffees I questioned the price of 2 coffees which came to $9.70. Rudely the blonde girl serving us stated that we asked for 1 coffee in a mug - we did not ask for any coffees in mugs. Her tone and rudeness to us was unacceptable. After questioning her she changed the order and 2 small coffees to have there then came to $9.20. We sat down waited for our coffees, (that is all we ordered) at 9.15am on a Wednesday morning and 15 minutes later, our coffees had not arrived. When we questioned the rude girl who originally served us, that we had been waiting some time for our coffees, she rudely stated that coffees this time of morning can take longer than 15 minutes. We waited another 5 minutes and then we simply left without having any coffees that we paid for....I cannot recommend this place to anyone. If you want great coffee in this area go to Bellissimo across the road in Wandoo Street, or Harveys in James Street. Both of these other 2 places are far superior and treat people well, with curiosity and respect. Obviously after reading the many reviews on this web site the management of Spoon in the valley are not addressing the issues of the staff who don't know what customer service is, and who clearly are not interested in customer service.

Delicious from the first bite. My lunchtime encounter with spoon deli was a surprising delight. From the first mouthful my woodland mushroom risotto was stunning. As risotto is my favourite meal it is quite difficult to please me. This risotto is the perfect moisture content with full tastes of peas mushrooms and that truffle oil. The asparagus and tomato adds the visual and textural delight to the meal. I couldn't be happier $23 spent for the best experience of my day

Enjoyed It. It was a Tuesday lunch, with my friend Sally. I went for the Barramundi, perfectly cooked fish on this hot day... served with cous cous. I have a love of cous cous and this meal didn’t let me down. Sally went for the calamari. She enjoyed it – not tough, but tender; not salty, just right.

Someone recommended Spoon Deli and I finally made it there - fantastic , friendly and most of all prompt service. Great coffee, good food served in modern deli shop cafe. Lots to look at after lunch. Sally bought some T2 gift packs.

The Wooden spoon achievement. After todays dining experience they have truly earnt The Wooden Spoon. My wife and I walked away from our meals today almost untouched. I couldn't believe my eyes...I never thought I'd see the day my wife could walk away with food still on her plate...she usually licks it clean! I ordered salt and pepper squid on thai salad. Dear lord! the squid was so salty it made my face squint like there was lemon juice in my eyes. I hoped the thai salad would balance out the saltiness but to my dismay it was ALSO SALTY!!! I tried to eat more because I paid so much and I had to wait so long for my meal but the saltiness was too overbearing. TOO PRICEY...TOO SALTY...TOO LONG. We told the waiter that we could not finish our meals as it was too salty. All he could do was say sorry and he let us walk. Poor service...super slow and awful food that could not be finished! Be warned

Slow, slow slow. Greasy cold food and poorly cooked beans for breakfast. Meh.

It was the only place open... Otherwise, I'd never go there.

Very slow coffee service when the place only had 6 or so customers. They seemed to have run out of coffee cups too and served in takeaway cups. They also told me that they had run out of forks for my apple pie, so they gave me a teaspoon instead. Wtf.

Reading the other reviews, I wonder if the owners are on urbanspoon - I hope so because there is so much room for improvement...

TERRIBLE!. I always go to the Spoon in the city..this cafe is not comparable AT ALL! I visited over the weekend and the staff are all moping around and unfriendly. I was depressed on entry. Opposite to what i get in the city. The staff in the city are always happy and very friendly. It's sad as the fortitude valley store brings the reputation down. Im not reviewing the food because its not worth reviewing. An absolute disappointment and a waste of money.
Honcho
Sooo average. I really don't get the hype. Overpriced to the max, average food, huge wait times. Only busy due to it's premium location, not due to the food / service / pricing.
Duco 65
Just not good enough - just listen to your customers or you will not have any
Jaydeecee
Slow rude service everytime I've given it another chance even though there seems to be oodles of staff. Pick up your game and then your prices won't seem too pricey then.
Mossimo.downunder
French toast overpriced. The french toast was close to $20 it was supposed to come with 'pineapple' and 'drunken rasins'. Toast took over half an hour and was served without pineapple and rasins. Needless to say I was disapointed. It was a pretty average breakfast that didn't come close to the menu description and was very expensive. My friend ordered the overcooked poached eggs with too little toast. Another craptacula effort.
Brizme
Terrible. I expected the same as the city, just like the previous review - completely opposite. Staff plonked our food without a word and seemed so miserable. Such a let down for the franchise.
