Reviews Tuckeria Fresh Mexican

Taking inspiration from San Francisco's active Mexican cuisine scene around the Mission District, Tuckeria - among several other joints - goes on to deliver something in the vein their famous burritos. This especially showcases that inspiration, having both of their outlets decidedly behind the scenes from the perspective of the main street. Nothing about Tuckeria is indicating that you are eating fancy fare, it is all about being in the back alley, among the cars, and with an aesthetic that will remind many of either the school-days tuckshop or some sort of canteen. In many ways, this has distinguished it to the point that it is as much its character, and many times when this is the character of the place, what you are in for is some pretty good fare. As is the case with Tuckeria, which is Brisbane's original McDaddy for how Mexican street food really works.

After quite a while, it was time to meet up with a good friend of mine again. The usual dinner out sometime during the week, and she had a specific hankering and knew of the place. That was more or less the long and short of it, and just as long as I could get something hot from there all was good. Flash forward to that day, and it is around evening time and there is a knock on the door, then off it was to the Valley for some good grub.

So when I mentioned earlier about Tuckeria's surroundings and aesthetic being rustic, that part is not joshing in any way. The bright colours are a contrast to the bare-bones outlay that represents the dreaded canteen of many workplaces. With the colours of the Mexican flag all around the walls, plus Spanish images it does a good job indicating the food that they serve. Much like the canteen or simple takeaway, the menu is right above on the board. To the side, water glasses are available to pick up as with a bottle of water to take outside.

Outside is very simple as well. It is a small balcony, with a few small tables around, a couple of big, communal ones, and a bench that goes around part of the perimeter. When I was there with my friend that night, one aspect I took a big notice to was a giant Jenga game. During the twilight part of the day, getting into the evening, all the city lights and the lights on the tree really added something that could only be at that moment in time. Heck, combine all these aspects and it might well show how Brisbane still has its aesthetic charms.

Moving along now, there is the service. It is pretty basic here, though still friendly enough. You walk up to the counter and place our order, which is followed by the transaction. I can't remember if a table number factored in, but regardless you go and find a table, then they arrive soon afterwards with your meal. That is it there, and doesn't need any modifications.

They keep it very simple with the menu here. This is Mexican street food, think of the burritos, think of the tacos (soft shell only), the nachos, plus plenty of corn chips and snacks to share around at the beginning. Other treats here include quesadillas, enchiladas and some sweet treats. Nothing that is really too out of the ordinary, as you choose your kind of meat plus how spicy you want the snack to be, and maybe some additions to it.

As far as the drinks go, there is a range of Mexican sodas, plenty of Mexican beers, some wines, and several of the Mexican staples - including tequilla, sangria and margarita. From what I remember, there is also iced teas available. If anything, after going over that I am reminded of a version of a craft beer bar that would be south of the border. So therefore, not bad at all with quality, the food is simple, and it is made to have a good time. The decidedly urban rustic outlay contributes a lot to this as well.

For what I had from the menu, it was none other than a burrito. The perfect and only real thing to have from one of these places. I went with the good old beef, and went crazy on the upgrades. First off there was "California style" which was the option of getting the rice replaced by fries, and then I added a bit more on and had it as "con tado". This meant to have it with the lot, which meant guacamole, corn, sour cream, cheese and jalapenos. To complete it all was the sauce, and I went spicy getting the smokey chipotle.

Adding in all the items made this one huge sucker. Might I also add in that it was quite filling as well? In a good way, because it was really tasty. The beef was tender, slowly cooked, and pulled very finely. While I will still give it credit for being a bit on the spicy side, it was still far from the spiciest thing that I have eaten. That was with a mixture of the chipotle sauce - which is more of a smokey flavour than spicy, though it still gives a chili hit now and again - and the jalapeno peppers - which are always a good addition, and can surprise you at times with a bite here and there. Those two different sorts of spiciness interacted well with one another. The avocado was solid, creamy and added its unique flavour into the mix, and the sour cream managed to cool down the spice of the chillies. When it comes to burrito, corn and beans are really just there and for more filling, and the one weakness might have been the fries. They seemed a tad undercooked to me. With only that issue there, wrapped in a warm and solid tortilla, this was enough of a meal to satisfy any kind of cravings.

Plus to share, we split a dirty nachos with pork. The dirty nachos had rice, beans, cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole alongside the choice of meat. This was piled high, it was huge and each item was fresh and good quality. The meat was hot and pulled well, each of the listed items was tasty and had its own distinct quality adding to the composition, and it was a perfect sharing food. It might have been a bit too much alongside the burritos, but I definitely could envision ordering it again.

Well, not too much more that has to be said. This is a Brisbane born and bred institution, Tuckeria does its job very well providing no-fuss street food from Mexico. Just take everything else being what it is, and enjoy. If this is indicative of the quality of the burritos in San Francisco, or at least its Mission District, then I am all the more excited to get over there at one time. For any Americans here who might say that these pale in comparison to what is available over there, then you just made me look forward to it a whole lot more.

TL;DR: All it is here is unpretentious Mexican street food.

Good fresh Mexican food. This place is lovely, serves good healthy Mexican food that is served in a timely manner. Also has friendly staff and a lovely outside seating area. The buritos are huge as well. Big enough for 2 and washed down with a great Mexican beer too.

I am SO impressed with the service we received tonight. Dining out with toddlers can be tough-kids meals are excessive in $ and size for their tiny tummies. When I asked the staff member if he could put together something smaller for my girl, he not only obliged but gave it on the house. I'd have been more than willing to pay, but this totally made my night. I heartily recommend Tuckeria- the food is tasty and quite generous, with good variety. It's great for casual night's out/date night, a little on the spendy side but I'm happy. Quite family friendly, though no highchairs (not quite the crowd they're pitching to in the Valley!)

Yum margaritas- shame about the 'chilli cheese fries'. We went to Tuckeria on a Thursday night for some nibbles and margaritas. The Margarita mix was good and not watered down like you get at other places. We saw some specials going for the 4th of July- one of which was 'chilli cheese fries'. I ordered these thinking they would have fries with chilli con carne and melted cheese over the top. But to my suprise these was normal hot chips with chilli powder and one slice of plastic melted cheese over the top. I was a little disappointed but i can;t be that mad as they were only $4 and the guc and corn chips made up for it. I've heard they do other menu items really well and judging by the popularity of the line up at the counter ffor a thursday night, i think i might have to go back and try something else. all in all not a bad experience.

Good food, can't complain... Burritos are really good, haven't tried GyG so can't compare. The margaritas a good, and they aren't really badly watered down like you can get elsewhere so worth the $8.50.

Tasty. This is my go-to place for pre-palace centro food. It doesn't look like much (especially compared with the flashy interiors of other mexican places around Brisbane) but I much prefer it to every other place. I always get the pork burrito. It can be a little bit pricey (especially if you're after a frozen margarita to go with your meal) but adding coriander is free and jalapeños are only 30c extra (the free jalapeños at Guzman Y Gomez are the only thing about them I prefer). The nachos are alright too. They should really offer a smaller sized burrito though, the one size they sell (at $11) is huge.
It's also really nice being able to get mexican, and have your friends get Grill'd, and still be able to all eat together. :)

Great burritos and decent price. A lot of other options as well, but I can't make myself choose anything else. This isn't gourmet, but for what they are trying to do here it's excellent.

Ok.... Went here for a quick cheap meal on a Saturday night with hopes of the food being as good (if not better than GyG). Would've enjoyed the experience more if not for the surly girl taking orders at the counter (smile once in a while!). Anyway we had a dirty chicken nachos with guacamole and beef enchildas which were good, but I think I'll go to the emporium again next time I need a quick Mexican meal.

ALWAYS RELIABLE! Yeh so mission style Mexican is all the rage at the moment, but it is soooo good, especially at Tuckeria. Every mission style Mexican joint has one Dish that they do really well, whether it be burritos, tostadas, quesadillas or nachos. Well Tuckeria is pretty good across the board BUT the burritos stand out here! Flavours are always fresh and they manage to recreate that good old US-Mexi flavour! 3-4*Stars (4 @ less busy times)

Better than Guzman y Gomez. I think this has cleaner & more authentic flavours than its very similar competitor Guzman y Gomez. The location is quite ordinary - handy to the Valley, but makes takeaway more likely than eating in. Best tasting Mexican I've had so far in Brisbane, but that's not really very hard.

Lot's of options!. Great to see an almost carb free option of having the burrito filling as a salad with a small taco on the side. Great for a casual meal on the run with a choice of beers to wash it down!

Initially excited about the prospect of a Mexican breakfast, I took the family down to the valley to try out Tuckeria one Saturday morning.

The apparently open at 9AM, which was a bit confusing since their website, receipt dockets and sign outside all say conflicting information, but oh well.

Breakfast was cheap and tasty. Perhaps on the small side, but it was a decent attempt I believe - the wavos rancheos perhaps not the best I've tasted, but then again it is hard to compete with my experiences from the States, along with their large hispanic population.

I intend to try Tuckeria out again for their main trade (burritos etc) because I think the breakfast menu is relatively new and they might be still finding their feet.

My second home. My partner and I go to Tuckeria 2 - 3 times a week as we simply cannot get enough! I always get the steak burrito which is perfect every time, but my partner gets something new every time and has so far liked everything!

The service is great, the food comes out very quickly and it takes absolutely fantastic (coming from someone who has been to mexico). Of the 30 odd times I've been to Tuckeria, I've always been very very happy.

Do yourself a favour and try a burrito with a mandarin jarritos and the chips and guacamole, sooo gooood!!

Pretty Good. Given the fact that I'm from San Francisco and they make a big deal about this being SF style Mexican, had to give it a try. The verdict: not bad. I've been there twice now - a couple of months apart. The food is pretty good, although inconsistent. Must be hard to train people to cook and serve food they've never eaten before in their lives!

Decent food, dont expect amazing. I've noticed this place across from Grill'd a few times and it's always been fairly busy so decided to give it a go. I looked at the menu at home on the internet first so I didnt have the problem of a confusing menu (although I can see how it could be confusing at first).

Food (I had a chicken burrito) was decent enough. Have to agree the flavour was a bit bland, and that for the size of the meal, it is overpriced for takeaway. At least when I pay for top price takeaway at Grill'd, I'm going to be stuffed by the end of it. Will give it a few more shots with other things on the menu to see if anything is better. Still undecided about this place.

Consistently yummy!. Fresh, friendly, clean. I've had dine in Tacos, take home Burritos & quesedillas and its always easy to pop in after picking up a dvd. Every time I go I've been asking when they will get licensed and finally there's an liquor application on the window! The prices are a bit on the high side - I agree that guacamole should be included.
Always a favourite

Really Good. I would be happy to recommend it to anyone, I think you have to take it for what it is. A touch of mexican SF style nothing to fancy just good food. Give it a go you may be surprised. If you have travelled through the USA particularly in the San Fran area you will know what to expect. Its like Chipotle Aussie style.

Best of its kind in Brisbane. Tuckeria has a good selection of Mexican and cal-mex (americanised Mexican) take-away style dishes. The flavours are fresh and simple, closer to what traditional Mexican should be. The food is tasty and despite being the only taqueria style place in Brisbane they haven't slacked off and compromised on quality.
My pick at the moment: fish tacos with guacamole.

Better than SF Mexican. Being a native San Franciscan and a bit of a Mexican food groupie, I was extremely excited to try Tuckeria and it's Australian take on fresh Mexican food. I am now at the end of my two week trip to Brisbane and have been to Tuckeria three times. I am hooked. I am not joking when I say that each menu item I order is better than the last (Chicken Taco Salad, Steak Burritto, and Chicken Nachos). California has some of the best Mexican food in the US, but Tuckeria takes the cake. Everything is fresh. Everything is delicious. The chicken nachos are perfection.

Way to go Jordo- you took SF Mexican food and improved it! I will miss it back in the states and can't wait to come back and try everything else on the menu!

Ohhhhhhhhh, the Joy. I have been living in Brisbane for just over two years now and there are very few things that I miss from the States. One of the things that I have missed most is a nice good Mexican restaraunt. FINALLY, Tuckeria has made my YEAR!!! The freshness of the food, the authentic manner in which the pork is cooked, generous portions, and very affordable. Can you get a better place to pop in? Once there are Mexican beers, I may never leave!!!! Thank you Jordan

The Best Mexican restaurant in Brisbane!!! having grown up eating and preparing authentic Mexican food, eating out in Australia has ALWAYS been a sure dissapointment as it is hard to get the basic ingredients and people running these establishements have little clue if any of real Mexican cuisine!!! I was greeted by the owner who had lived in San Francisco, great idea to bring what is our equivalent to macdonalds into Qld!!! The good is the closest to Mexican home cooking . The staff are obviously relaxed enough now to speed out the orders ..(I went when it was very busy and it took no time at all) I'm keeping this place as one to keep trying.... I look forward to see their evolment in the next few months

Brisbane's Best Mexican. Taquerias are a dime-a-dozen in San Francisco's Mission District. It's the true home of Californian Mexican (CalMex) food. The tacos are great, the burritos are yummy and the atmosphere is always buzzing. Unfortunately San Francisco taquerias aren't always, well, clean.

Tuckeria has taken all the good bits of Mission District Mexican food and raised it up a notch. The restaurant is shiny new and super clean. The dining space is cozy but not crowded and the fittings are edgy - check out the recycled timber boards and the funky lights.

The staff are great. Friendly and relaxed they're more than happy to serve up your order with a smile.

Ordering is fun and interesting with a menu to explore and lots of choices to get your meal just the way you want. My favourite burrito is the carnitas (pork) but chicken seemed to be popular on the day.

I love the presentation of the food and the most important aspect - taste - hit the nail right on the head.

All in all Tuckeria sets new standards for Mexican food in Brisbane. Gone are the heavy refried beans and deep-fried meals from "old" Tex-Mex restaurants, replaced by the fresh and tasty Cal-Tex burritos, tacos and more.

Check this place out and enjoy a burrito. Burgers are so 2009.

The food was fresh and tasty and the price was good. The joint only opened 8 days ago so they are still ironing out wrinkles in the service, buy I'm happy to find some decent Mexican food in Brisbane. The steak burrito was good but the steak could be more tender and flavorful. The corn tortilla chips were great, but at 3.50 for about 10 chips, this is the most expensive item on the menu (in the US they are included with your meal!). The salsa were a little watery, but the flavor was nice. It's Mango season here in Queensland, so some mango salsa to go with the fish tacos would be excellent. Keep up the good work!

This meal is the perfect mid-weeker meal – quick, easy, fresh and won’t break the bank. Located in the heart of the valley on Brunswick street, Tuckeria is a great meeting place before a night out and a few tummy filling meals before a few too many margaritas. Your meal is assembled right in front of you while you pick how you want your taco/salad/burrito/nachos assembled – beans, no beans, sour cream, guacamole and a variety of tender marinated meats and a spread of spicy salsas (or mild if you’re so inclined). My hot tip – the beef taco salad and a side of spicy cheese fries.
