Review Simmer Huang - Brisbane

Vicky
Staff were helpful. 口水雞 was very tasty but was very disappointed with our beef tendon, tripe, omasum, tongue simmer pot. The beef tongue was missing and they used cubes of beef brisket instead. The simmer pot was very oily as they added a huge chunk of lard at the beginning. The thick sauce they used didn't go well with the ingredients and they put a lot of it in. It only tasted a bit better after they added some water so we could cook our extra veggies. The simmer pots are very pricey so would be good to provide what is written on the menu rather than using a cheaper substitution.

Food is delicious but on the expensive side probably due to the special sauce. Waiter's understanding and communication in english is below average. You really need to bring someone who can speak mandarin.

Always get either the Pork Belly or Duck, great portions, one pot can feed 2-3 people easily and could spend up to 1.5 hours here easy. Shame the service is sometimes hit and miss, I find myself having to put my hand up just to get staff's attention. Would be nicer if staff checked on tables a lot more frequently. Also noticed recently swapping in capsicum and celery into their veg mix, it was honestly better before, plus with more red dates to add sweetness, helps balance the salt and spice.

The restaurant must be the best one that I have never seen before!! There are three reasons that I have to recommend you guys. Firstly, yum yum yum! Actually assorted seafood and meat is my favorite. I love seafood and some red meat, so this one gives me the best choice. I love spicy food and the sauce help a simmer pot lock all flavour. Secondly, the serivice is amazing! All witresses and waiters are well rounded, polite hospitable, and careful. When they ask you they smile and give more details that we don't know. Thirdly, the environment is great! I love the restaurant's music and clealiness. I am a bit neat-freak, but I didn't find some dirty cups, plates or others. I think I will go to this place again!

Highly recommended. Friendly staff and atmosphere. Food is somewhat different when presented and they taste good too. Lots of parking available. Less hectic if you have dinner.

I went to Simmer Huang with my friends last night. The table was set neatly. Finely chopped condiments were arranged. Dinner started with cold appertizers (cucumber, pig ear and chicken), all of which were nice and punchy. Indeed, they were great 开口菜。We then had a hotpot. Serving was very generous. Floor staff members were attentive and friendly. It really was a great dining experience.

This restaurant offers the best services compared with other Sunnybank restaurants. Friendly staff. However, you must be patient because it will take a long time to get food ready to eat.

came here on Tuesday. They have special deal recently on every Tuesday. Most surprise thing is they were cooking in front of customers. Definitely unique in sunnybank area.

the food is served very well, the quality of beef tripe is so soft and easy to bite, the meat balls is so good 🤤. The pot that we order has come with a special sauce that’s make the pot different with others. The pot is cooked in front of the customers. (hot food, happy tummy)

Recommended for couples and group of friends and family. This is not a typical chinese food where you can find in other restaurants. Its special sauce is what makes the dishes taste incredibly good. I like the spicy sauce more than the not spicy one since i like spicy food. You can choose from not spicy to super hot one if you can handle it. It is served and cooked in your table, one thing i like about this restaurant is i can see the cooking process and at the same time smell the food while being cooked. Trust me it smells amazing, like it makes u even hungrier and cant wait to dig in. Oh and dont forget to order the handmade noodle. IT’S LIKE MY FAVOURITE. It is cooked after u finish half of the main pot and someone will add soup into the pot and pulled the noodle for you. You get to see how they pulled the noodle and dip in the pot. The handmade is like a great combo that u MUST try.

Love it here as you get to see them cook the food in front of you. So you will know what actually goes into your food. I'd recommend to bring a partner if you ever wanted to visit here as their portion is usually more suitable for at least two people and above. Their price is quite reasonable if you share it with a group of friends.

Not sure why people keep coming back to this place, I have been here twice with my friend, to be honest, food here are too salty. Everything taste pretty much the same. I don't recommend.

We come here regularly for lunch. Three cup chicken with double hand-made noodles, fantastic! You can get it pretty hot if you wish :) or mild just for awesome flavor.

Find out a nice place in sunnybank plaza, reasonable price , quite ambience and friendly staffs. I ordered a beef and seafood combination pot, the secret sauce very tasty with food together. Will come back again with family.

Our dinner was as delicious, we ordered the fish hot pot. The service was good, the staff were very helpful. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Like the pot full of chicken wings. Tasty. Staffs good, always around and help you. Food good. A little bit expensive but it's more like a fine dining so acceptable.

Planned to go to another restaurant which was closed so we ended up here randomly! The pots are delicious and there are so many options to pick from. We ended up with the beef one which was really yum. What a wonderful experience to watch the food cook infront of you!

One year has been passed since my first review so went for an exploration in a group of five last night. Business seems very quiet that may due to the low season of the industry. Ordered two pots, the Assorted meat & seafood and the beef brisket with some side dishes of different vegetables and noodles to go with the pots. Service is better than last time. Portions of the dishes are reasonable but side dishes seem pricey. Overall taste is good; however, I still picked up the feathers on the chicken wings of the assorted meat & seafood dish (What a consistent error!) as the same as on my first visit. Overall impression is average but better than last time!

Aug 5, 2018 Rating 2.5/5
I usually do not like to queue for a table and rather to pre-book my table in advance. Unfortunately, this restaurant employs a funny system of first come first serve so I have to wait till the cooling down of 'Grand Opening curiosity syndrome' then go for my exploration. Had my lunch yesterday and it was not that busy. Service was attentive but there were some wait-staff who are pretty green. Ordered their signature 'Assorted Meat & Seafood' and waited for the theatre. There were three waitress standing at our table with one senior and two novices. Raw meat and vegetables were all packed in containers and one of the novice staff started to wear a glove and distributed all the vegetables and meats on the pot and advised us that it would take around 15 minutes. Well, the whole process was quite disturbing because waitress approached to our tables at least three to four times and opened the cover of the pot to check if the readiness of the chicken wings. Eventually, I had to advise them not to check it anymore because all the chicken wings were nearly fallen apart by their repeated tests. In addition, we have no right to ask them to put our additional dishes (pork luncheon meat and black fungus) in the pot. We had to wait till their judgement of all the food from what they put in at the beginning were nearly finished then they agreed to put our additional dishes. Again, it is a funny system!
Honestly, sauce, taste, spiciness were all up to expectation which at least worth 3.5/5, particularly the passion from the wait-staff. However, the chicken feathers on the chicken wings (so obvious and you would not miss them, please refer to the photos) deserve a deduction of one mark and the chip on the tea cup (very dangerous to hurt your lip) worth for another half mark, soooo total score can only be 2.5/5! Wish the management pay attention to the training of how to mark time of preparation of food for diners at the table. Makes it practical and show your confident to the diners please!

Nothing to write home about, but it seems to be pretty popular with people that are in groups of four or above, because as we all know, hotpots make for easy crowd-pleasing. Still, it's nothing amazing, and it was a bit confusing because as I remember it, the wait staff cook for you and we were waiting on something else to be added and didn't know whether to prompt the wait staff, or wait, or...

Favorite chinese restaurant. Good service with good food.
All the pots worth a try. Can’t find anything better in Brisbane. It could even turn into hotpot at yhe end. Love it

The taste is really delicious, that's the reason why people are always full. It is very appetizing to see the stew in front of me. The raw material is brought to you and you can see how it is made. I left the last table when I went there, and before I could clean it up, I sat down quickly, or I would have to stand in line! It's worth to recommend!

tasty food, the service was amazing, fair price, I got 10 dollar voucher. I will come here with my family next time. I enjoyed that experience. Strongly recommend.

I have been to this restaurant many times. The food is always good. It is not expensive to eat with family. I will come again next time and hope you can try this restaurant

No waiting on a weekday night, service is good and friendly staff. I like the simmer pot, it is worth to try the handmade noodle, it's very delicious. we ordered a shallot pancake, it isn't long time to wait, it's very quick. besides, it's a good place to enjoy a great time with friends.

It is an amazing experience!! I love this flavor that makes my mouth watering😁 I enjoy eating simmer pot with my friends in this restaurant. I like this two kinds of eating style. I can have more choices like simmer and hotpot. Next time I must come back with my boyfriend💪
Hahaha
Simmer Huang makes me shock ! Will definitely come back again. Must try out the pancake and hand made noodle, you will never find another restaurant that serve better pancake or hand made noodle. Also this is a two eat style pot, first eating a simmer pot later a hot pot. In the hotpot, you can add in any of your favorite vegetables or meat. Must try if you ever visit simmer huang at sunnybank plaza!

Have to say the food was borderline average and below average. Long wait for the food. Still need to wait for the food to cook. Ran out of clean cutleries and cups for water. Not a place that I would come back just for the experience.

Needing a quick snack I walk in to Simmer Huang ordering two entrees and hot rice. Service is quick and I am eating within 10 minutes. The steamed cold spicy chicken ($5.80) is fresh, appetising and quite hot! And the sliced Braised Pig Ears ($5.80) is a surprising huge serve. Crunchy and very enjoyable. Thank you Simmer Huang.

Simmer Huang is a relatively new Chinese restaurant that opened in Sunnybank Plaza. They were originated from China and also have a couple of branches around Australia. Jacky and I decided to try this place as it looked interesting and we felt like hot pot at the time. When you are seated, there is a piece of paper for you to order and select the ingredients that you want in your dish. They had a wide selection of vegetables as well as meat to choose from. You can also select the spiciness level to your liking. I was really craving for something spicy but Jacky can’t really take spicy food so we settled for the mild level.

It’s probably not my kinda of food..was a busy place & lack of staffs to serve. Definetely not a family restaurant , not sure if kids will keen on the herb-ie smells of the food

Second time customer, last time returning.

We had the Pigs ears dressed in sauce for a entree, very very salty this time, previous visit the pigs ears was one of the best I’ve tried.
Had the main simmer pots Braised Beef with a few add ons which really lacked in flavour and a little bland which was agreed on by everyone. Not sure if the salty entree had affected our taste buds.

Although the service is fairly good there are far more places to explore, for value for money in the area.

Food 5/10
Price $$ average
Service 7/10 good service
*** This restaurant has the wow factor when it first open. However, the food is basically asian homemade style. Not bad to dine in with close friends or family. Too much for two people. You won’t finish it.
Recommend to try at least once.

Overpriced and overrated. We ordered the three cup chicken hotpot and the flavours were nice enough but far too salty, so as the meal progressed it became less and less enjoyable. As another reviewer mentioned, it's also very spicy so choose your spice levels carefully. Service was okay; our waiter was friendly and cooked the food well, but the mediocre food for such a high price left us feeling very disppointed. Definitely won't be returning anytime soon.

Really salty but service is good. This is my second time to try this restaurant, all food are not fresh and really really salty. The price is a little bit expensive but it did not worth this price.

So it's understandable that when everything is written in Chinese and you don't understand the menu, you would usually not choose this place to eat, BUT you would be missing out majorly. Thought I'd give it a try and I was tastefully surprised. We had to ask a staff how to order because the menu was super confusing haha. The staff here were very helpful and friendly too btw. So the method is: you choose a braise pot and then add in anything you might want extra into the pot. You only get to choose either salty or increasing spicy as a flavour. We chose spicy which was in the low range and boy did it hit hard, be warned. We got the braised assorted mushroom pot with chicken wings. Everything gets bought out in containers including the braise sauce, then they layer everything into the pot and cook it right in front of you. The pot has a mix of vegetables, the main braise ingredient which is what you chose (mushrooms) and anything extra on top (chicken wings). There was only two of us so this was a lot of food. I'd recommend eating here with 3+persons. Then after you get bored or finish off the braised food, stock soup and hot water is added to make a hot pot. You can order other foods like meat or vegetables to eat with the hot pot. We got their special handmade noodles and it was delicious. I thought it was going to turn soggy and soft in the pot but it stayed chewy and yummy the whole time. Super recommend eating here for outing with groups of friends and family. The interior and atmosphere is friendly and relaxing too.

Heard from the birthday boy who wanted to celebrate his BD at Simmer Huang that the restaurant didn't accept bookings. I personally wasn't happy with it and kept complaining with my friends all the time we were standing in a long queue for our table. I was pretty sure there were other ways to manage it better.

Since I had no idea of how it worked here, so I left the BD boy with our ordering. We had, for entrees, pig ears dressed with sauce and steam chicken with chilli sauce. I wasn't familiar with the pig ears, but my 3 friends mentioned they were nice and crunch. The chicken was served super fresh tender though the sauce was slightly salty.

For the hot pot, i was interested by how it was served. We first had to choose a main pot (meat), and we chose assorted meat and seafood one. Then we added up handmade noodle and tofu. All ingredients were prepared and packed in containers. For the first round, a staff managed to put meat, seafood and sauce in the pot, and covered with a lid. We didn't need to do anything; just waited approximately 10-15 mins for food to be ready. After we had ate the meat half way, a staff came to add vegetables. Then again came to add soup. Impressively a staff brought fresh noodle dough and showed us how to make handmade noodle at our table. What an art! We were so entertaining. The fresh noodles were nice and chewy. Overall food tasted not too bad though the sauces could have been less salty. Food itself wasn't outstanding, but loved the idea of fresh ingredient and cooking at the table.

Apart from the non booking system, we were happy with the prompt and efficient service. Staff knew exactly what they needed to do and worked well in a team. We were served by different staff but their team communication was excellent.

Very nice, good service and I love this pot! I heard about this restaurant from my friend, and tried yesterday, really enjoy it! ( the sounds, the light also the food!)

Food tasted good however it is very spicy 🌶 so warning in advance. Service is very poor and food is a bit pricy but if you're down to try something new in town then this is the place if you like spicy.

The concept is pretty unique with a cook preparing your simmer pot at your table, but the food was pretty average. We got the Assorted Meats with Seafood mains simmer pot, the portion size was quite large with good mix of various fresh vegetables, however the flavours added on to the pot wasn't anything to rave about. We added the handmade noodles on which were cooked in the simmer pot after we had finished the meats. I do recommend trying these noodles as they were quite delicious. Although the portion size was quite large for a table of two, the price was fairly steep and not really a good value.

A bit disappointed with their service. Although quick to be seated, our hostess seemed to be in a rush and we were left on our own. It was quite difficult to get the staff's attention so it took a while for us to decipher how to order. Then it took us almost over 15 mins to get one of the staff's attention so we could place our order.

Trendy.

Chic Asian fit out.

A hive of activity.

Over hyped.

You already know about the queues for this multinational chain of Taiwanese simmer pot foods so I don't need to canvass this any further.

Ambience: abuzz. Big lineup. Noisy music. People everywhere!

Service: quite good. The staff were generally quite friendly and helpful with the menu, which itself was a little confusing.

The experience as a whole was to tick your food items on an A4 piece of paper.... Then they bring it out to you and assemble a bunch of indgredients and put it to work at your table.

Food: spicy pigs ear had a softer than usual texture, the flavour was ok but too salty and (for my taste) a little too spicy. Our main course was the pork rib braise with pig intestine and beef balls. Intestine was interesting and the beef balls were ok (seemed to be out of a packet). The mystery braising stock was quite flavoursome and the braise contained A LOT of garlic; however, the garlic itself has next to no flavour.

All the meat ingredients in the braise were precooked so there was no concern with anything being undercooked; however the pork rib really needed an extra hour. There was quite a bit left over so I took it home and made a second braise out of it... Much better: but, this defeats the whole notion of hospitality. The braising sauce had a strong herby taste that I couldn't identify but worked for me.

Verdict: nice place for a loud evening out. But definitely don't be shy asking for a doggy bag. Might go again if I need some casserole base, would order chicken next time.

This place doesn't give me good experience at all in terms of customer services and communication. The music they play is also way too loud making it like a disco (I think they actually kept turning up the volume when the customers had to then yell at each other even louder because of the noisy music). Simply couldn't carry out a conversation properly with my friends while dining there. Staff is very inflexible and would not bother fulfilling customers' reasonable requests until the customers lose their temper. Overpriced food as well. In addition we were told that their EFTPOS was not working only at the end, when we finished the meal and paid (I think it probably is tax evasion by intention). This is definitely a once-only restaurant, i.e. we won't come back again. p.s. on the way out we saw someone's resume with all personal information sitting on the cashier's counter for anybody to see as well. Privacy commissioner may like to investigate it.

Being a Sunnybank regular, I've watched as Simmer Huang was gradually constructed at Sunnybank Plaza. Doing a bit of research online, I gleamed that they were a nation wide chain, with stores in Sydney and Melbourne, specialising in Simmer Pots. Although it managed to pique my curiosity, it proved amazingly difficult to get a table. On the opening weekend, I showed up at around 7.30pm to be told that they were full up and not to bother waiting for a table, so after a couple of days, I opted to call in and try to book a table, but was instead told that they don't accept table bookings, but did open at 5pm. Not wanting to eat dinner before 6pm, we headed there at 5.45pm to find a huge line, which turned out to be the line to merely grab a number to get a table (i.e. a line to join the queue). At the point of getting a number, I asked the waitress how long the wait would be, and was told one hour. We ended up finally getting a table at NINE O'CLOCK, despite the waitress assuring us multiple times that we would get a seat soon. Unfortunately for us though, at that hour, half the menu was already sold out. Dejected as well as annoyed at their poor time estimation skills, we left. After that time, my companion, although very frustrated, also had her interest piqued, and decided to line up at 3.30pm on Friday to make sure we did actually get a table. Heading there after work, I met her at the door at 5.20pm just as she was going in.
