Review Sushi Station - Brisbane

Lea-Sophie U.
It's really not that bad as some people said before. I think it just depends what you expect. Yes they have very less sushi with 'real' fish but they have at least 8 vegetarian sushi variations (and other ones with tuna etc). It's no actual restaurant (you have to pay on a counter, no table service, plastic cutlery) but for the price it's still great. The papaya salad they had tasted amazing and they even had a miso soup, dessert and green tea. We're the only two guests but they refilled everything without asking for it.

Undoubtedly , it is cheap in price. I can say food hygiene is good and fresh, they just put a small portion outside and keep refilling the sushi time by time. But, don’t expect too much, as it is not the common type sushi. Some sushi’s ingredients are strange, like the egg sushi, it just taste like sandwiches, not a sushi. Majority of the sushis are not bad, if you are just looking for an all-you-can-eat meal with a cheap price, this place is a good choice for you. But, you would like to try the Japanese style sushi, I won’t suggest this shop. 1 star is for the food quality, although it’s not in my expectations, but still have something I like to eat. 1 star is for the price which is really valuable, $29 for 2 people on Groupon. 1 star is for the service, I really appreciate their efforts. They reply my comment on Google within an hour, so I decide to rewrite my comment. Suggestions to the shop: 1. Some seaweed of the sushi is too wet, it becomes too chewy. 2. The edamame bean is a bit bitter, not the taste I usually have.

Not the yummiest place I've been too. It is cheap but considering the amount of food I eat... I can pay an extra $5-10 and really enjoy my sushi elsewhere. The selection here is very limited with no raw fish sushi. The taste isn't there either for me. There is no ambience and so there isn't much to enjoy here but the service. The staff were lovely. This is just my opinion though. I don't eat much but do like to try different places and I don't like to "judge a book by its cover" as I've been to many places with awful service, limited menu but has fantastic food. A little offended by the owners comments, so edited my review to note that this is my personal opinion and in no way saying that the owner is dishonest.

Absolutely disgusting. The service is very poor, the walls are dirty, the tables are dirty, the high chairs are disgusting. Absolutely nothing like the photos. No wonder there wasn't many people in there. Toilets are like you're in a horror movie. Never again

There were bugs coming out of a freshly displayed sushi rack. Utterly disgusting. Very clear the one staff member who barley appeared did not want to be there. Very limited options and definitely not fresh, would never recommend.

For me was great! I ate two full plates of sushi. During the lunch time the price is 15 aud. Dinner time starts at 5:30 pm and the cost it's 20 p/p

For $15, you can get as much as you can, however, the food quality isn't good enough to persuade myself to get more. You can tell the food are not fresh. And when we were having lunch, a whole brunch of Chinese tour came in. The whole buffet session is stuffed with them and the food gone and no one even bothered to refill. The cooked food is cold and terrible. And guys, don't expect salmon :)

Feeling a bit under the weather these couple of days like there are blades in my throat or should I say GLASS in my sushi ;) Came in tonight (10th of August 2017) with a groupon ($29 for two, all you can eat), found a piece of glass in my sushi, after informing the staff, they simply responded "oh okay our fault" 1/10

The quality of food here has consistently dropped over the years esp the hot food. Sushi is marginally better. Last Sunday we went there for lunch only to be shoved by 2 groups of very loud tourists who didn't care if they bumped into your seat, or got in the way when we tried to get back to our table. This is the paradigm - always have groups of tourist whenever we dined there. One particular staff member (she seemed to be only one attending to customers through the door) was a long-faced, unfriendly girl with an attitude. Guess if she didn't like her job she should leave. Avoid going there

Doesn't deserve all of the really negative reviews. It isn't too bad if you prefer quantity over quality. Staff were friendly, the place was clean. The food wasn't fantastic but it's all you can eat for $15!! I left feeling really full and my wallet was happy too.

Went to this place to on Saturday. The location is very accessible by public transport, just next to the major bus stop. The food is average sushi rolls, nothing fancy. And you shouldn’t expect the sushi with raw fish etc, considering this is $15 AYCE. Also there can be a lot of tourists coming in as well. Overall, a reasonable place worth trying once in a while.

Had a great feed here tonight. Really wide range of cold sushi and hot food + miso soup, dessert and fruit. Has to be one of the best value buffets in Australia.
Jace Robinson
I had to ask for a refund, which was kindly given. The sushi was not fresh at all, not even close. I am not a squeamish person, but I have had sushi at gas stations that I felt safer about. Check the quality before you agree to pay.

Food is OK, but just OK. I think there is certainly a market for an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet in Brisbane, but this missed the mark for me. Sushi not of great quality, but it did fill a hole.
Hopefully they can improve the quality of the food.

Wobbly tables, not so clean walls, plastic cutlery.

A lil ok the shabby side however customer service was very friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome.

This is like the equivalent of a pub lunch to a restaurant as Japanese sushi train to this buffet.

No beef or salmon left for us as we were in the tail end of lunch, was pretty disappointed about that, however cost was super cheap so it kind of balances out. Kids didn't mind the quality but I certainly did as my taste buds were definately not in the mood for canned salmon! Yuck!

The inari, egg rolls, tuna, lobster rolls and chicken pieces were our favourite and my daughter loved the jelly.

I think your Groupon is a waste of time for anyone actually trying to save money as u would only save $2 from street price.

Amenities should be cleaned and checked at regular intervals, the we're quite unclean.

Only come here if you want to gorge on sushi & not too concerned about the quality. I think it is an all you can eat buffet for only $15. On first eyeing the sushi on arrival I knew it was not going to be sushi heaven for me! The rolls looked a tad dry & messy, as did the rice encircling them. On tasting they were very dry & the seaweed wraps were particularly hard to chew. Best to put the full roll into your mouth & swallow hoping for the best!! Which is what most of the clientele were doing. Seemed to be full of organized tourist groups coming straight in from the buses. The restaurant inside is a tad messy & has a canteen feel about it. I always say one gets what one pays for & this was the scenario for me here

This place is 100% terrible. I don't know how it is still running.
Went here on a living social deal. When we showed up we couldn't find any staff for about 10 minutes. Eventually we found a woman who had never heard of the deal and she took my phone into the back room for another 10 minutes before coming back and telling us to sit down.
The sushi had almost nothing in it. All the fried food was packaged. All the food was cold and the staff were non existent.
The dessert table consisted of cut up oranges and a grocery store tin of condensed milk with a spoon to scoop it out.
Laughably bad
We had a very pleasant experience dinning with west end sushi 😊 the food was delicious and the service was very friendly and welcoming we will definitely be back ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Brisbane Restaurant
I love this place! The service is quick, friendly and fast. The sushi is delicious. And it's well priced for what you get. We came here in a group of 3 on a Thursday night and staff were attentive. We loved the buffet style.

Thr all you can eat should be renamed all you can scavenge because the options are very limited and the popular salmon and tuna sushi rolls are quickly depleted. You get what you pay for really.
Michelle
Worse sushi I have even had tasted old could barely eat any thibg thought I would be poisoned. I will never return gross! Waste of money! There are better places down the street.

I LOVE sushi and I have enjoyed some "all you can eat" sushi buffets in NZ and USA in my time and I like the advertised options of sushi, hot dishes, noodles and soups the West End Sushi Buffet was offering.
Went in for the $15 lunch special and was greeted immediately. There were a lot of types of sushi on o@ffer, vegetarian, seafood and meat; as well as a small area of buffet trays of hot meal option and a miso soup station.
The restaurant was half full of customers and the selection of food looked rather depleted but we assumed that the sushi and hot options would be restocked soon enough.
The sushi was disappointing. Canned salmon and tuna, the only vegetable in the sushi rolls was cucumber, the rice was hard and slightly old, and overall very amateur. Looked good but didn't taste great.
Unfortunately the miso had run out and the staff did not top up the miso souo station and even after asking for some miso soup from the staff, we never got any.
As for the hot options; there was a sweet potato dish, teriyaki chicken nibbles, stir fried udon, deep fried tofu, deep fried sushi, deep fried spring rolls and curried potatoes. The only vegetables on offer (apart from the potatoes) was some steamed pak choy. Sadly all these meals were lackluster. Potatoes too salty, sweet potato too sweet and the rest tasted deep fried. The chicken was okay. Nice taste but extremely fatty. And, just like the miso station the food ran out and wasn't topped up.
So for a buffet style restaurant with "all you can eat" you are strictly limited to "all you can find to eat because we won't put much food out for you to eat". Which is fine since I wasn't to keen on eating more than more than one serving of each item.
Lots of sushi options on offer but maybe perfecting lesser options would be better. And keeping dishes topped up could be another thing to work on.

We arrived at 11:30 on a Saturday and received great services from the staff. The food are just yummy and fresh. Love their traditional Japanese miso soup. This is the second time we have been here and will be regulars in the future !

Good quality fresh food. Been there several times and always enjoyed! Sometimes I had a late meal the table is almost empty, but the staff are happy to take your orders and make fresh sushi for you! Thanks sushi buffet, your service and food are fantastic, good work!
OMG this restaurant is so bad. Sushi are not fresh at all, avocados are black in many sushi rolls. Prawn nigiri tasted absolutely disgusting, fish roll was even worse. The inari they put inside one of their rolls was black and tasted bitter.
And guess what they put in the hot box food area, DEEP FRY SUSHI! They tasted gross and I'm sure they are all over-night sushi. The miso soup was cold and the pork bun tasted funny. Please don't go to this restaurant.
Luke
Not a bad place to try out mixture "Asian food". They call it Japanese sushi restaurant but in the hot food section they have lots of Chinese dishes as well. Most of them taste really nice. I love the dumplings and fried chicken wings. Some of them not sure what they were. I asked the staff and she explained to me quite well.
I think it's not 100% authentic but it is cheap and u can definitely full your tummy.
Anyway, I recommend this is a good place to come with your foodie friends.
James
Just went to this place with friends for dinner. It was quite good! $20 for all you can eat. Not only sushi but also hot foods !!! We ate a lot. I love the dumplings and salmon sushi best ! My friend is vegetarian. She was a bit worried cause she though may not have much to eat. But, they also got lots vegi options ! The staff are very friendly. We will definitely come back next time !
Worst sushi I have ever had in my life, it was disgusting. The ingredients weren't fresh at all. The prawn's on the sushi rolls most definitely came out of the freezer as they were watery and gross, I wouldn't doubt they'd been in the freezer for months. Another thing which made this place just that extra bit of a horrific experience was the fact that I asked the staff specifically if any of the foods on the buffet had peanuts because I am allergic. Absolute lies, I had a terrible allergic reaction to something peanut-related that was in one of the hot dishes they served. I ended up having to go to the bathroom and I threw up because I felt so bad. DO NOT GO HERE, stay far away from this place.
Nomnom
The worst sushi in Brisbane. The selection was limited, no signage so you don't know what you're eating and ingredients are not fresh. I guess there isn't much you should expect at $15 per head but I would have been belly off putting that money towards one of the fast sushi outlets in the city.

Agreeable with the review below, the water was off tasting with a heavy metal aftertaste. In conclusion, I wouldn't come here even if it were $5 a head. I'm better off putting that money towards a banh mi from Kim Thanh down the road.

Years ago, this used to be my favourite place. However, over the years the quality of the food has seemed to have decreased. :( Went there last time and restaurant was nearly empty. However, a good price for all-you-can-eat sushi.
-16/04/16

My daughter remembered this place two years ago and really wanted to go again to lunch.

I should have just walked out!
It took almost 8 minutes for someone to take our money and at $15 head + $9 for my daughter it was not a cheap meal.

What did we experience for our $24.00?

Water Bottle
- Was dirty
- Normal temperature tap was broken and had dirty masking tap over it
- The water tasted funny, no actually it was foul.

SUSHI

The crab sushi tasted like rubber

The Egg sushi smelt funny

The staff hardly came out to refresh the plates

HOT BOX FOOD

A honey covered potato
A potato curry with a little bony chicken
Steamed vegetables were over cooked & brown

The noodles
were mushy and almost looked like vomit

MISO SOUP

Tasted like packet mix

ASIAN BUS GROUP

The place went from empty to full.
Hardly any room between tables to get from your seat to the buffet without asking people to get out of their seats to allow you to pass by.
Many of the group tasted, shook their heads and left within 10 minutes from that group.

BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL

You need to visit this filthy place, the Biloela pig farm is more hygienic and the food they fed the pigs better than this place.
Nina
Just went to this sushi buffet restaurant with my friends. I can't believe that $15 for all you can eat!
They are not just have sushi. They also have a lot hot food choices as well! I love love love the radish cake which looks like tofu. The staffs are very nice. Explained to us what is what. Unfortunately They don't have much eel choices. I love eel . But I totally understand . Otherwise for $15 they gonna lose a lot of money . Anyway! I think this place is fantastic ! I'll definitely come again!

This place used to offer a good variety of sushi, as well as fresh, hot buffet (Taiwanese style Asian food). I haven't been there for a few years and revisited them last night with family. We noticed a change of owner straight away, as well as the empty, run-down state of the setting. At least two dishes of food were OFF, I mean really "off" and not just " not fresh". I literally had to spat the food out it was that foul! We were lucky none suffered food poisoning. Do not go there!

All You Can Eat Sushi. Sounds like heaven right? I thought so, so I took myself, my husband and two kids there for lunch today, paid my $48 (2 adult/2 kids lunch buffet plus 1 can of Coke Zero), grabbed a plate and looked expectantly at the buffet... Ehh. To be honest my first thought was "how long will it take for the food poisoning to kick in?" I took the risk (no refunds) and choked down some fairly dry and unimaginative nori rolls. Four hours later I don't have food poisoning, just a lingering disappointment.
Ronnielui2003
I could not criticise this sushi buffet through the lens of cost-effective from a diner's perspective. The price is cheap to have all-you-can-eat on sushi and many different hot foods. It is definitely perfect to feed a big eater who is sushi-lover. However, should you like to have authentic taste of sushi, you should have a lot of choices due to the strong competition among sushi places. I am sure that you can have quite quaility sushi at the rate of $3.50 in many places now. Certainy, there is a demand for sushi buffet, otherwise, this restaurant should have been closed down a long time ago.
Tastes Like Regret
Went to West End Sushi Station Buffet, located at West End on Saturday night for dinner around 6pm. It was very quiet and we were the ONLY ones in. (Probably because 6 o'clock dinner is so early) but during the night there were 2 other groups. . The seating areas and decor were very simplistic. The buffet area itself was kind of small. All the sushis were displayed nicely. ALL YOU CAN EAT, are 4 words to excite me.
Tastes Like Regret
My first dish consisted of salmon sushi, Inarizushi (sushi in a bean bag) which is like a sweet tofu skin and rice, this one had seaweed. And chicken, and some other.. seafood salad thing...
My second dish consisted of a gyoza, salmon, tempura prawn and a fried chicken. The gyoza tasted like cream cheese for some reason even though it was mince. The tempura crumb was not crunchy probably because it has been out for a bit. And the fried chicken was the absolute bomb. Nice and crisp, beautifully flavoured, a little fatty that I like...
Not very good. It tasted cheap, it looked cheap and for $15 more you probably could go to a sushi train (or whateva they are called/ the equivalent) and get heaps better quality. customer service was ok, just the food was terrible
Tracey.leguier64
Thumbs down. Worst food I've ever eaten. Stale, dried up sushi, no value for money, very disappointed. I honestly don't understand how they are still operating. Yuck! !

Disappointing!. Having recently discovered sushi, it has fast become one of my favourite foods. I love most of the sushi train type restaurants with the moving conveyers. Anyway my partner and I thought we'de try somewhere we'd not been before so went to this place. The place was packed (usually a good sign) with asian people (usually a great sign). When we got there at around 1pm, there were about 5 different types of sushi, sparsely spread over the plates at the buffet station. We were "welcomed" by a smileless miserey who just stood there looking at us. We asked if there were any free tables to which she bluntly replied "You pay first".... $15 each... sounded like good value, but the food was not great. I recognised egg, and tuna, but other than that there were about 3 other un-named rice/california roles. It seemed liked they had put out the cheapest blandest selection possible. A very disappointing rage. In addition there was some (greasy) noodles, some stodgy fried potato like things and some pretty awful miso soup.
To me it felt like we'de got caught gate-crashing a sh*t asian party late so there was barely any food left, and fined $15 for the pleasure.
Wont be returning... ever!

The sushi was good, the beans on the buffet were pretty tasty. I'm a coeliac so I didn't have anything else, but to be honest, there didn't look to be anything to get excited about. Note that I am no expert on sushi, but in my lay opinion, it was great l, especially as it is all you can eat.
Josh Browne
Save the journey. Go to sushi train. Order what you want, pay $15 and the go eat at home. Good idea, poor execution and variety.
Rob
Firstly, I'm no Sushi Connoisseur. I found this to be perfect!! Great price, great food and great variety. Everyone who doesn't like it is just too fussy.

Stomach filler. I've been to SSB a number of times whilst I was a student and as a few reviewers have noted, the sushi items are of under par standard; however, you have to adjust your expectations to the offering. If you go at lunchtime, the price is quite reasonable for what you're getting. This is no pretentious foodie hangout: you go there to fill up - and as one other reviewer said, "you get what you pay for".

The staff are Chinese (as well as almost half of the buffet selection) - efficient and (some of them) quite friendly. I recognised some of them as used to having worked in other establishments of cheep and cheerful Chinese takeaways...

With a few judicious choices and a shrewd outlook on the offering one can always have a hearty meal here; if you don't like something you can set it aside and not eat it - just go and pick something else. Despite the signs for charging for left overs on your plate, it's never been enforced on me.

Disclosure: I haven't been to SSB since 2008 so I accept that things may have changed a bit.

Sushit. The food was tepanyucky and didn't Japanplease me. Miso disappointed.

Great for birthdays (for poor students). We had a birthday party for a friend here and the restaurant easily fit the 18 of us.

Amazing value- we paid $15 for all you can eat! They had quite a variety of food besides sushi as well- such as vegies and fried Chinese food.

Great place and would highly recommend for parties or group dinners with friends. Not a place to go to impress though.

Treasure. We kept passing this place on the way to another favourite food haunt of ours, simply had to try it. So glad we did, the food was better than expected.

For $20, you couldn't go wrong. I was quite astounded at just how empty the place was, yet they offer quite a good variety of food.

Will definitely be seeing our business there again.
LisaEats
Try it. We went on a Tuesday night and there were only 2 other tables occupied so there was definitely lots of food for everyone that night. There is a wide variety of sushi and the few chinese dishes were alright just a little dry. For $20 each we will come back. The old man at the till was very nice and smiley and the staff in general were friendly
Frenchfrygirl
So very, disappointing. I basically created my urbanspoon account so I could write my review and voice my opinion on this restaurant. We entered this restaurant on a whim. $25 for all you can eat sushi? why not?

First of all, layout of the restaurant is quite nice. I can't negate this. Japanese theme to match the food, nice. Secondly and most importantly the sushi is so poor quality and the quantity of the sushi laid out was very minimal, considering this is advertised as a "sushi buffet". Sushi was only a minor component of the food selection, with items like fried chicken wings, spring rolls and other typical asian buffet food was offered. I would definitely not recommend this place unless you are the sushi-naive.
Clancy M.
What's not to like?. Some people will turn their nose up at this place, citing the food as inauthentic, or "not that great" as far as sushi goes.

To be honest, compared to more serious sushi restaurants, it technically isn't all that great. But being great was never the point. The point is ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT SUSHI!!!

Anybody who doesn't immediately realize the value of that, is beyond saving...or they just have a stomach the size of a tennis ball. I have an average of 5 platefuls of food every time I go, for $15 (at lunch), and would eat here every day if I could...

In a world of steadily rising prices and perpetually smaller servings, one restaurant shines through the din as a holy beacon of almighty, hunger-crushing glory. Sushi Station in West End is that restaurant.

But hey, keep hating on it...more sushi for me. (And I will challenge anybody who gets between me and the sushi to sumo-combat).
Madeleine W
You get what you pay for.. I feel like there's too much criticism surrounding the Sushi Station Buffet in West End, for the mere price of $20 i think it's a great option. Not to mention it takes away the stress of frantically adding up your plates at the end of any sushi station trip which is a pain i'm sure we all know too well. Your $20 includes a variety of 7-8 different types of sushi, miso soup, spring rolls, gyoza, meatballs, fish, chicken wings and other assorted fried food. Not to mention the free refills of green tea and a choice from 2-3 desserts.

I found the staff to be super friendly and i didn't have to pay extra for condiments which was good.

Yes the sushi isn't the finest quality but i think the place emphasises quantity over quality which really is to be expected from any buffet restaurant under $30. Also the venue is BYO, which i personally think adds to it.

Sushi Station Buffet - West End, Brisbane. For years Sushi Station , often nicknamed "the Sushi train" has been popular and provided a formerly new type of food. Usually though, this costs a fair bit if you are a bigger eater. Sushi tends to be filling, so this may not be too much of an issue. However, a different idea was done in part - have it as a buffet. That was essentially the sushi train but it was dependant on if you could afford it. It is really a great idea and different from many other types of buffets.

The Sushi Station buffet is layed out very efficiently, allowing a natural flow for patrons to get their choices of food. They have the sushi in one section, the drinks and miso soup in another, with the hot food off to the side and an island for the desserts. It is almost as simple as it can get in aesthetics while still having a presentable vibe.

For a small price, you can easily eat very well here feeling full at the end of the end of the meal but not have that bloated sensation in your stomach. It is known that Japanese cuisine is like that due to the cultural perspectives back in the homeland (it is actually illegal to be overweight in Japan) and it still manages to have good flavours.

The selection of sushi is nothing so fancy, many of the basics such as tuna, seaweed and inari (a.k.a. beancurd pockets - one of my favourites) are there. They all taste very fresh and the rice does not have the dry sensation too many places with take-away sushi tend to have. Often you will see the waitress bring numerous kinds of sushi out thus guaranteeing freshness and quality; the sushi types are all put on individual mini-platters and have such a respectable yet cute presentation.
At the end of the selection, there is the usual wasabi and ginger to put into a little dish for dipping (soy sauce is at the table). If you like sushi or want to try it for itself, this is a must to attempt. Wasabi is not for everybody but enough tries of it can make you accustomed to its unique flavour.

There are some other options for eating available. Most are Japanese with the odd odd inclusion of something not traditionally Japanese.

Of course, you got to have the miso soup (no spoon per se but there are plastic spoons available alongside the chopsticks - not for the miso soup really but if you feel inclined ....). It is not the best miso soup I tried - a little on the bland side - and it has little bits of tofu floating in it.

There was also this odd crab stick-egg white snack that I did not go for particularly, I gave it a few attempts but the taste was too eggy for me (mind you I do not dislike eggs but the yolks - runny of course - are needed for me). Sounds a little silly, I know.

Then there is the hot section. In there are a reasonable selection of items. The best are the gyozas (always a delicious little snack, filling and light) which I had a fair few of them. Also, there are spring rolls - same old really.
A few main dishes are there, some honey chicken and a stir-fry of some sort. Both were passable, with the stir-fry being a bit indistinguishable in what is was and the honey chicken being a bit heavy on the battering making the appearence of meat in it vague at best. One other one there (I did not have it) looked a little on the industrial side with huge chunks of boney meat (I assume it was beef but I did not quite feel game enough to tackle it on that night).

There were a bunch of sides available; steamed broccoli - quite good, stir fried beans - in which they were infused with garlic and other flavours which makes for a delicious vegetable dish (one way to get kids to eat their vegetables). Then, in making the illussion that they go with everything there was wedges available. I will confess I had a few and they were not bad. Guess it is to shut the kids up.

Finally, there is dessert. It was okay, the thing I had was a little on the weird side. It looked a bit like a chocolate cake but was as far different from it as could be possible. It was a gelatine-like substance that had vague tastes of green tea. If I return, I might give it another go granted it is there. On the side I had an orange wedge, a good finisher to a meal - I have constantly thought there is something about fruit (particularly citrus) that makes you feel less full after a big meal where you feel very full.

I do think maybe - with an extra cost perhaps - they can give the option of having a small bowl of green tea ice cream. It worked at the sushi trains - so why not here?

This is value for money without the guilt. Keep to the sushi (and gyozas) and you have a fantastic selection of goodies. It is simple, but ultimately delicious. This is worthy of returns.

Great value and the kids love it

... meh, its a buffet with not a lot of people in it. Although I think my Boyfriend would say it was worse because of the old guy who was glaring at everyone he said.
Food: 5, I wouldn't go here again but it gets a 5 because I didn't get food poisoning and liked the fried chicken and the yellow bean pastries. You honestly get what you pay for an $15 for all you can eat fried chicken
