Review New Shanghai - Brisbane

Terry Donaldson
Only ever been there once , waiting most of my half hour lunch break to get funky suspect tasting dumplings I threw away, would not waste time or money again , lots of cheaper , friendlier and tastier dumpling joints in Brisbane to choose from.

FFS, I ordered spicy and sour noodle soup, it's neither spicy nor sour. Taste was awful except pan fried buns, which is yum.

Freshly made dumplings on demand. Tastes great. But the fried rice is a bit too oily.

Wow the Myer Centre Food Court has come a long way over the past few years! Food is fresh and made to order, so be patient during busy periods.

The customer service was very very poor. I just went to the shop today (30/04/2020 at11.30am) and the lady at the shop who do the casher she got such a very bad face without any smile at all to client. The situation was I asked her that my meal include rice or not and she just answer me “what do you want fried rice or normal rice” with a bad voice and face (keep repeating) I was like yes lovely I know what you were asking but I wanted to know that the rice include with meal or not because I don't want the rice and that is it. I am absolutely not going to this shop at Myer centre anymore and I am going to tell all my friends about this such a poor customer service training. Used to often buy meals from this lovely restaurant but never thought this going to happen. Not even say thank you for customer. NEVER AGAIN new shanghai. Thank you for a very very bad experience.

Ordered Uber eats yesterday. The steam vegetarian dumplings are disgusting. The dumpling skin is thick and hard like a crust and it tastes horrible. I have never have dumplings like these before.

Used to be good. But today the pan fried pork buns that I purchased were not nice at all. The texture and tastes like the buns have been cooked a day ago.

I’ve been to New Shanghai many times now, both eating in and getting takeaway and they’re always supplying delicious food. Every time I’ve been the food has been amazing and very fresh. You can see them making the dumplings from scratch when you walk in and the atmosphere is very nice. Staff aren’t the most attentive, I’ve had to call for their attention every time I’ve been which sort of gets annoying but the food makes up for it.

Dumplings

This outlet in the Myer Centre food court gets mixed reviews, but it's a really great option if you need a quick lunch and want to skip the queue at the Queen's Plaza location. The first time I visited I could see the lady in the window making the Shepherd's Purse Wontons, so I opted to have those - I chose the version with chilli oil, peanut and sesame sauce. The second time, I tried there the Xia Long Bao and the Hot & Sour Soup. The dumplings are very tasty and fresh, but I didn't think that the soup was hot or sour enough. Luckily there is vinegar and chilli in the condiment station and once I adjusted the soup it was great. This is a good quick, cheap option for lunch - perfect if you are dining alone or in a hurry.

Ordered xiao long baos and pan fried dumplings to share with a work colleague and we were pleasingly surprised at how delicious they were for a food court meal. The dumplings were made fresh on premises (watched the chef made them while we were waiting) despite other low reviews, we had a very pleasant meal and will definitely be back.

This is seriously one of the worst place ive dined at, even for food court standard. There are alot of cheap options in foodcourts around the cbd. Fried rice were not even woked properly, barely any ingredients. It was just disapointing.

Super fast service. The place is clean. You have to arrive early because the place fills super quickly!
The food was good. There’s too much on the plate!

$8.50 for a quick lunch hot & sour soup and 4 dumplings wasn’t too bad. The soup lacked a bit of flavour and the dumplings were a little too dry but tasted nice. Didn’t expect much for a service in a food court.

Food here is not bad but service is TERRIBLE and absolutely not family friendly. I came here with my toddler and mother. There were plenty of tables available and we were even happy to share a table. We asked to be sat on this one table because it was roomy enough to put a high chair there. The waiter just said no and took us to a cramped table (when there were plenty of free tables available)and put the high hair right in front of a door which the service staff opened and closed throughout the night. We asked to be moved multiple times but he ignored our request. By that time, my toddler was very hungry so we just stayed there but I would’ve left in any other circumstance. At the end of the night, we made a complaint however no apology was given.

We will never come here again and I would definitely not recommend the restaurant to families!!

Since this is the food court version of the restaurant, it really isn't too bad if you're on the go and wanting some food. I tried the soup dumplings (XLB) and pan fried dumplings here and both were quite good, although it was incomparable to the dining experience at the actual restaurant. The recipe is definitely unchanged, and the prices I noticed were slightly cheaper than at the restaurant.

I really liked this branch down in Sydney, but this place did not compare to its companion over the border. Dumplings and buns are quite expensive in comparison to some other places, and service is somewhat abrupt.

Positives: Pork buns are really tasty, and its great seeing the chefs make these in front of you.

I really don't enjoy writing negative reviews, but the Pan Fried Pork Buns and Pan Fried Pork Dumplings at New Shanghai were terrible. This was compounded by the fact that the minimum respective orders were 3 Buns and 4 Dumplings.

The Dumplings were crunchy and dry - they must have been sitting in the warmer for hours to achieve this state. Sadly, the Buns were even worse. I struggled through the first one and tried a bite of the second hoping it would be better, but couldn't even bring myself to swallow it. Everything ended up in the bin.

I politely informed the staff that the food was inedible and she just said "sorry". I recommend that you avoid New Shanghai!

Haven't been here in years, probably 3 years ago. Their food quality has dropped. Xiao long bao isn't as good as before. The quantity has also decreased. The crispy chicken rice and pork noodles had more on the plate in the past. Not impressed.

One of the key dish 201 on your menu is not even cooked(see the photo I uploaded). Poor cleanness for some of your soup spoon. Rating 2/10.
Id say this place offers the best dumplings in Brisbane. Never disappointed. I always come here whenever m in cbd. Worth your time and money!!

Never come to this restaurant again!!!

The taste of the dumplings was really disappointing. The flour dough was so thick and the filling did not taste nice either. Plus, the service was the worse of all. Why were there people lining up!?
(・・?)

New Shanghai is my weakness and I don't care what other people say about this place. The only reason I'm not giving this place a 5/5 is owing to its hit and miss service. Our top favourites are the prawn wontons in peanut chilli sauce (pictured), pan fried pork buns (a must) and their Xiao long baos!
The Tasty Plate
New Shanghai in The Myer Centre is the perfect place for a take away dumpling lunch and it's not as busy as their Queens Plaza store. I have been to New Shanghai a number of times now and I have enjoy the food every time. But hands down my favorite dish is the Shepherds Purse and pork wontons with red chilli oil and peanut sesame oil, delicious!

If you're after good Northern Chinese food in Brisbane, this is the place to go. I've had countless dates here along with many groups of friends for lunch and dinner. It's a safe choice for those who want to start exploring Northern Chinese food as they are known for their dumplings and fried foods with chilli. We always order the Pan fried pork buns and chili wontons, it's always packed out at lunch and dinner - for a reason! This is probably the only good northern chinese restaurant in Brisbane.

Very very busy at lunch time, but even so our orders were taken quickly and food was delivered very quickly so we weren't left waiting. The dishes we ordered were very tasty. It gets a bit loud inside from the amount of people, but that's my only negative.

New Shanghai is one of the few places in Brisbane that has fresh and authentic dumplings. The pan fried dumplings can be a bit difficult to eat though, because they're so big but it's worth the brilliant flavour. Been here twice this week so far and will definitely become a regular.

Authentic shanghai food. Nice xiao long bao. Would like the pan-fried buns with less baking soda in the dough. Yes, they're fluffy but would trade puffiness for tastier (less bitter) buns any day. Found other dishes off the beaten bun track, such as deep fried tofu with salted egg yolks, stir-fried pea shoots, and stir-fried rice cake all delicious. Service also gets a thumbs up.
