I always tell my friends that we are lucky to live in Australia particularly in Brisbane because we have so many Malaysian eateries that serve authentic Malaysian food. This one is one of my favorite.
We made some take-away orders last month and could not find any sign of COVID-19 impact on its business.
It was as busy as usual and I have to wait for 10 minutes even though I placed the phone orders 20 minutes before arrival.
Well, it is worth for the waiting time because those food are superb.
Besides the Hainan Chicken rice and the roti that I have tasted before. The new trial of salmon fish head with vermicelli and the clay pot tofu rice are both tasteful and above average standard. No wonder it is so busy.

What’s new, pussycat? New menu at Malay House, actually. Well it’s not fresh off the press new as it’s been out for a few months now, but I haven’t been back since the first few visits last year after it first opened, so it’s new to me! They also have some newish lunch specials from $10.90 that includes soup and a drink. Couldn’t take advantage of that on this return visit as we were there for dinner, but it seems like a good option to keep in mind for another time.
Our order:
* N05 Maggie goreng, $12.90 - stir fried Maggie noodles with deep fried drumstick, fried tofu, onion and choy sum
* R02 nasi Pattaya, $13.90 - Malay House fried rice with omelette
* D05 cincao (grass jelly drink), $3.50
Portions were generous and taste was decent, though I wasn’t enough of a fan of the curry powder in my nasi Pattaya to want to put it on my repeat order list. And if I was given the choice between this Maggie goreng and the $10 mee goreng special at Lemak, I’d pick the latter. There’s lots of other stuff on the menu I wouldn’t mind trying though, and one of our friends had the dry pan mee dish (N11, $13.90) which he said tasted just like home so that’s a pretty good endorsement!
I think I may have found my favourite Malaysian restaurant in Brisbane! I have heard of Malay House but because it is located in Underwood, it is quite a travel for us to visit there. Sharing the meals between four adults, I chose some signature Malaysian dishes to share. Firstly, the chicken satay. The marinade of the chicken satay was quite close to home and feels almost like the ones from home. The chicken was tender and not dry at all. The dipping sauce - peanut sauce was good.
Helpful staff, huge portions and cheap eats. Could have improved a bit on flavour and served hot food rather than luke warm.
Walking into Malay House today, there were no vacant tables indoors. I had to sit in the outdoor dining area on this warm 35°c Autumn day. The Hainan Chicken Rice was sold out so I ordered a Char Kueh Teow ($13.90). The Rice Noodles were nicely fried, Prawns were fresh with plenty of Fish Balls and Fish Cake. Very tasty!
Delicious food, fast service, friendly service, food and drinks served quick did not wait long at all, electronic service bell on every table, i used the bell three times it was great, food is nice and tasted really good... see pics. Menu is easy and not extensive list of menu items so ordering is quick and simple no time wasting in making decisions. Will go back again. Price's are fair.
Recommend by a Malaysian friend of mine as pretty good. When we went wasn’t many people, order brown chicken rice n dry wanton noodles.
Both tasted better than it looks, especially char Siu as I thought may be dry, not so. Soon after heaps of people come in as well. Got a chance to look at other dishes as it pass by and all looked v good n healthy serving
Must try
Another little gem of an eatery, tucked away in Kuraby, very close to market square shopping centre and in amongst other quality Asian inspired restaurants, serving a decent selection of delicious Malaysian foods which is Well priced offering decent portions, friendly service and above all tasty food. With a better than expected vegetarian range. I have eaten here several times now and each time has been maintained at the same standard. This is great to see. Thanks. SARDS.

AMBIENCE 4.5/5
Feature wall on one side adds character, although opposite side wall is bland grey. Chinese KTV running on the TV provides background music. Marble tables feel nice and expensive.
SERVICE 4/5
No issues with service. Help yourself to tap water bottles and metal cups. Food came out timely within 15minutes of ordering. Also provided side chilli condiments complimentary which was nice.
PRESENTATION 4/5
Looks appealing but unexciting. Just no fuss food with pretty large portions
TASTE 4/5
Vermicelli fried sort of disentegrated a bit too much, but that might be expected as I’ve never ordered that as my crispy noodle before. However the smokiness of the noodles definitely made up for it.
Sambal beans and prawns stirfry was very flavoursome and delicious.
Dry panmee was also yummy and delicious.
OVERALL 4/5
Reasonably priced, tasty with portions on the larger side. Would definitely recommend to others and come back to try different dishes.
We ordered a nasi lemak, laksa and a wa tan ho (fried hofun with the running egg sauce) they are all pretty nice! the laksa was mild spicy, and you gotta choose the types of noodles, I personally love both kinds (i.e. the vermicelli and the egg noodle). lovely soup base for the laksa.
Tried this restaurant for the first time. The food was pretty good. It had all the classic Malaysian dishes but I wanted to try something different. I had the dry noodle with wantan soup and it was a very generous serving. My husband had the Maggie goreng which he enjoyed. The crispy pork roll was like a deep fried sausage...probably not something I would order again. I’m looking forward to going back to try other dishes.
Their new menu is amazing. Best Malaysian food I’ve had in Brisbane. Specially recommend the butter kaya toast and sambal fried rice ! The Service is excellent and restaurant is very clean. Will definitely be back again.
Been seeing quite a few photos on insta about the newly opened Malay House, over in the increasingly bustling shopping hub that is Underwood Marketplace. Having read Brisvegustation's detailed post about the restaurant, I decided to go for an early lunch while their opening specials were still on. Arriving just past 11.30am on a Saturday, I was pleased to get a table without waiting, especially as a queue formed roughly 15 minutes after we were seated. Having said that, the restaurant was definitely quite small and could probably not accommodate more than 30~40 people.
Visited brand new restaurant Malay House on a Thursday for lunch. Having only recently opened business was good - all the tables inside were taken and some tables outside were used. As an opening special (until end of June), a free complimentary drink is provided with each main meal purchased (any drink from the drink menu). The prices are quite average for Malaysian cuisine (between $11-$13) and the food is quite good. It isn't the best Malaysian food we've tried but we will still be returning to try other dishes. We were also advised that the chef is also from Malaysia which is great!
The service is quite muddled at the moment, staff are attentive but are not completely sure on some questions asked. Undoubtedly, the service will improve with time.
The first dish we ordered was the 'char keow teow'. The portion was not very large but was substantial enough for one person without any leftovers. The flavour was quite nice but definitely could be better with more wok hei flavour. The prawns used were very fresh - they were not the frozen ones that can be bought at the supermarket. All the ingredients were very fresh however could do with more of the actual ingredients. Majority of the dish was jus the noodles so it would be a bit nicer with maybe some chicken or beef in there.
The next dish we ordered was the 'Hai Nan chicken rice'. This chicken rice had some good aspects to it and some that could be improved on. Personally, I think that the chicken was a little bland and could definitely do with more flavour to be infused into the meat. However, the rice was some of the best rice served with Hainan chicken rice I've ever tried. There was bursting flavour in the rice - the ginger was evident and the rice had a nice slight yellow pigmentation. The chicken was served with several slices of cucumber, bean sprouts and ginger and chilli. This dish was nice however, I will not be reordering it.
The last dish we ordered was the 'Hokkien noodle'. When this dish was served the first thing I noticed was how much liquid/gravy it was sitting in. This personally was quite off-putting to me as I prefer this dish with not as much gravy. This dish was served with the same ingredients as the char keow teow - fish cake, prawn and vegetables. Once again, the prawns were very fresh. There was a lot of lard in this dish (which I understand is needed to get the particular taste for this dish) however, there was so much lard that hadnt' been dissolved yet. The flavour of this dish was nice however, the gravy was too much and there was way too much lard.
The free complimentary drinks for the opening special definitely made the trip to this restaurant much more worthwhile. We ordered a white coffee which was quite small. The taste was nothing special - it was a basic white coffee that was nice. We then ordered 2 soya cincau drinks (soy milk with grass jelly). This drink was very nice! The soy milk was not too sweet at all however, next time I would order it with no ice as there was so much ice in the drink and near the end of my meal the soy milk was very watered down due to the ice melting. The grass jelly was very generously heaped into the drink which was very delicious.
Overall, this restaurant has some nice Malaysian food - not the best we've tried but it is only the opening week. We will be returning soon to try some other dishes on the menu.
Too bad the place is now shut down.
