really enjoyed a low key dinner at this place. Beef momos are really good and so is the spicy chicken curry (not too spicy but just right to be tasty. Roti also pairs really well with the curry heh

I really want to like Shimbu more than I did. I enjoyed the flavours of my tofu curry and fried/steamed momos, but I found it doesn't compare to other Tibetan food I've had in Melbourne. Don't get me wrong, everything was fine, but it wasn't great. While I've had better momos in Melbourne, perhaps it's through the other dishes that this venue can really shine, so I'm inclined to give it a second go.

Ambience is great, the fit out has has a really homey feel to it. Gets really busy 7pm onwards. Usually better to book ahead.

Would recommend the spicy chicken in coconut curry. Good portions. Their rotis are quite nice too. Good idea to buy a main dish and eat with roti instead of rice. Nice to see the venues finally upgraded to chairs aswell.

Great atmosphere, we came here just before the dinner rush and it was very peaceful. The tofu tacos with chapatis are incredible and the sauce they use in the tacos is addictive. The noodles with vegetables are also good. Will definitely be back!

Good ambiance and great food. Love the choice between traditional and modern cuisine.
Loved the roti, so flakey and buttery. It made the tacos something different but loveable. The fried dumplings where completely deep fried and that is different than traditional fried dumplings but really enjoyed how they made them this way. Definitely a memorable dinner, would definitely come again!

We weren't sure that we wanted to eat, so we wandered along this little strip of restaurants near to where we live.  We were very happy that we found this place and will be back.  The restaurant was quite full up the front, but we were greeted with a smile and quickly seated.  We had the beef Nyamo kyurmo lemon, honey tomatoes and herbs, which was really different and very tasty and the Tsel bedhai, coconut tofu curry, which was creamy and delicious, with coconut rice and a roti on the side.  They do a good mix of vegan, vegetarian and meat options, so you can come along in a mixed group of eaters and everyone should go away happy.  Its a great place and I would recommend it, it's a good price as well, so won't break the bank.  They do takeaway as well.

Our first experience with Tibetan cuisine in Melbourne and it is quite a pleasant one! Shimbu is a family owned business with the owner working in the kitchen and the mum as front of house staff. It is a modern, clean and beautiful restaurant/bar with some Tibetan themed mural wall and frames. We wanted to try the traditional Tibetan food so only looked at one side of the menu. The other side has a modern menu like tacos. We started with the vegetarian pan fried momos, chickpeas khatsa, lamb curry, roti, Tibetan bun and ended with deysee the traditional dessert. The food is very flavourful, full with spices, similar but not as strong as Indian food. Will return to try the food on the menu.

IPYou know life is all about journeys! This one is so out there that you need to absorb what I am about to say! My partner Ally brought me to this restaurant because I missed my time in Nepal! Your not going to believe the journey that was set in motion after that. So whilst dining at this restaurant, I met the restaurant owner (Dorje) daughter, Khando... What a beautiful family... It so happened they were part of a "Six degrees of Seperation"pilot film project that was funded from a Hollywood production company. After dining at this restaurant, I was contacted by the producer and a chain of events were set in motion... An entire film crew was chasing me accross the country to Jurien Bay Western Australia where I was working as a skydive instructor. The whole project started in a Hymalayan Village and the journey was to find someone who knows someone who knows someone etc etc to find Rob Lowe (Hollywood actor). Just so you know I also work in film and production, which might be the reason Khando picked me. Lucky for them and randomly I had a girlfriend also works in the industry living in L.A that knows the hair dresser who looks after Rob Lowe! That was my experience of eating amazing food at Shimbu Tibetan Restaurant!!!!! Namaste

We couldn't fault this delightful restaurant. The wait staff were attentive, knowledgeable, responsive and unobtrusive. We ordered the fried beef dumplings, lamb curry, Dahl, rice and roti. We had plenty of food for three people, although bigger eaters would be advised to order another curry. For us it was the perfect amount. The decor was modern and spoke of the fusion in the food. Looking at Tibet on the map, it is juxtaposed between China and north east India. The food had a delicious blend of these cuisines as well as something unique. The interior absorbed sound well, so that we could hear ourselves but not the tables beside us, except for light atmospheric hubbub. Nothing to fault here, it's sure to become more and more busy as word gets out.

Come here with my girlfriend almost fortnightly since we found Shimbu. Didn't really know what to expect when we first went in having never eaten tibetan.

The soft shell crab and pork belly tacos are amazing! The roti they use is so flaky and crispy and the fillings  are delicious. we cannot get enough of them.

The curries are also nice - love the lemon honey chicken curry. Can also recommend the fried chicken.

Got the pack for two off UberEATS. Considering it was delivered on a bicycle, was surprised that the curry didn't spill more - it had slightly spilt, covering one tub entirely. The dumplings were delicious in their dipping sauce, however the meat ones were a little dry inside. The curries both had plenty of meats, and whilst different, were good - however a little bland. Ordered roti as well which were unfortunately cold by the time they had gotten to us. Would recommend.

Aptly named Shimbu (translated to "delicious") is a family run eatery with dishes hailing from Tibet. The second restaurant from the team previously behind popular Northcote venue Wild Yak, their latest venture, Shimbu, is vibrant and delivers an impeccable menu of both contemporary and traditional Tibetan cuisine - The first half representing traditional Tibetan food with dishes such as sha momos, solo and chasa bedhai while the second half featuring Shimbu's spin on traditional dishes - Think spicy or mild pork belly soft tacos (served on roti instead of a tortilla) or cumin infused lamb ribs with a side of spicy apple and orange salad.

Came here for dinner with a group of 9 friends and we reasonably enjoyed ourselves. The food was good, we particularly loved the soft shell crab tacos and the roti bread.

Service was friendly, however a tad slow; our food came out one dish at a time and wasn't coordinated well- the roti bread came out two dishes after our curry...

Overall, a nice place to try something different.

The quality of the food served, given the price, is simply unbeatable. Along with their ever-evolving modern menu, I’d definitely be back for more of Tenzin’s creations.
Overall an excellent meal with the roti disguised as a taco the highlight of the evening. I’d have to say this is undoubtedly the best rendition of a roti I’ve had, irregardless of culture and cuisine, and locale.

When ordering, Tenzin told us to go nuts, and being the gluttons that we are, we sampled a huge variety of dishes that offered up extremely unique flavours and textures.

We left carrying our bellies barely able to walk, mostly due to the variety of delicious food but also due to the generous portion sizes.

HOLY YAK! LOOK AT THOSE SHA MOMOS!
And by sha momos, I mean beef dumplings. The Tibetan kitchen is a unique experience, with influences from both India and Nepal. Culinary traditions reflect the mountainous Himalayan landscape with typical dishes using noodles, goat, dumplings, soups, cheese and yak.

Recently opened in Brunny East, Shimbu is a small family-owned restaurant presenting the finest Tibet has to offer. Following on from their previous project, Wild Yak, in Northcote, owner Dorje Wolokh and his fam decided to shake up Lygon street, Tibetan style.

Shimbu features a mix of traditional and modern Tibetan dishes. From curries to cumin-infused lamb ribs, the variety appeals to all tastes, both classic and contemporary. The reasonably priced cocktails and beers are also crowd-pleasers, with a range of mouth-watering concoctions topped with fresh fruit.

We dabbled in both the traditional and modern menus, starting with the popular fried sha momos - fried beef dumplings. Now these ain't your ordinary dumplings. These are like a cross between deep fried, thick-skinned dim sims and gyoza. Paired with fresh chilli and hot sauce, these bad boys went down a treat! For a contemporary contrast, we also ordered the spicy pork belly soft tacos with avocado, served on crispy roti instead of the usual tortilla. SO. GOOD. They were an ideal kicker for the feast to come.

Our mains included the solo, a spicy stir fry with meat and fresh chilli, and the chasa bedhai, a mild chicken curry made with coconut milk. Both servings were overwhelmingly generous, with a distinctive bite in each mouthful. Spice lovers will appreciate these authentic recipes!
We finished on a sweet note with coconut ice cream sprinkled with coconut shavings. Satisfied to say the least, we left feeling content and perhaps a little tipsy, but that's okay. Tenzin, who is also part of the Terrific Tibetan Team (TTT) as I lovingly call them, made sure we were well fed piglets, even giving us leftovers to take home! I'm eager to return and try the other tantalizing dishes on the menu, including the fried chicken and spiced pork belly!

I came here midweek with a couple of friends and ended up ordering  almost the whole menu which the friendly staff helped us navigate. The chilli chicken wings at Shimbu are the standout, the veggie momos (get them fried) are a good starter and the veggie stir fry was generous in size but also super tasty and fresh. Vibe is cool and contemporary but at takeaway prices. Highly recommended!

Came here for dinner before heading to the pub up the road. It was busy for a Wednesday night, food came out relatively fast considering the amount of people dining in.

Mains took a while but it was clearly made fresh to order so no fuss there. quality > speed. Had the spicy pork belly tacos with avocado as recommended by the waitress and was pleasantly surprised, I must say I've never had anything similar to it, very unique.. I think it was the roti that made it so one of a kind.

For mains we opted for the Shoko Tema Curry (potato and chickpea curry) and the spicy chicken curry dish (forgot the name) 2 butter rotis and brown rice. We left absolutely stuffed. Total bill was just under $47.

The whole restaurant seems to have stools and no proper chairs which made it uncomfortable after a while.

Shimbu's is an overall nice and affordable place to eat. Tibetan food can be bland, but it's hearty and filling. Perfect for a winters night. We had the vegetarian dumplings which I felt were a little dry and the curried potatoes which were more flavoursome compared to the other dishes. For mains we ordered the Tibetan bun with the veggies in coconut curry along with brown rice. The mains were okay, not bad but nothing extraordinary either. Holistically, a pleasant experience.

We were recently invited by the lovely Tenzin to dine at his restaurant Shimbu, a Tibetan restaurant which recently opened in Brunswick East. So before we go into the finer details, thank you heaps Tenzin for your very generous and warm hospitality!

Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by Tenzin and straight away loved the vibe of the place. It had a casual yet very modern feel. We loved the large ‘Shimbu’ feature sign on the wall and it was buzzing with people. Davin was also very interested in the cool stools. For me personally because I have a bad back I always prefer proper chairs with the backing support but I have to admit that they did suit the decor of the place.

The menu is very cool as it had a list of traditional dishes on one side and on the other side of the menu it had options with a modern twist. We settled on some of Tenzin’s recommendations plus some other dishes we found interesting. We found the prices very reasonable with entrees on the traditional menu averaging $5-$6 and mains about $15. Set menus are available on the modern menu if you are not sure what to order and are priced at $34.90 per person and $24.90 for the vegetarian option.

From the traditional menu we ordered the shoko khatsu which consisted of potatoes with fresh tomatoes, ginger and spices. This was a really nice dish and I loved that they left the skin on the potatoes. We also ordered the steamed beef dumplings. The outer dough of the dumplings was quite thick compared to the dumplings we were used to however the beef itself was full of flavour. We ordered the chicken bedhai curry with coconut milk and vege and the sarsha tema under the vegetarian section which had mushroom and snow peas with garlic and ginger. I loved the sarsha tema dish! It was full of flavour and the vegetables were not overcooked, the snow peas still had that lovely crunch to it.

From the modern menu we got the pork belly soft tacos with white radish, carrot, tomato and kewpie mayo served on pan fried roti. There was an option to add avocado which we did. Oh my gosh this dish was so tasty! The roti was so light and crispy, it was probably the best roti I’ve had to date. And the pork belly with the other ingredients and their special mayo was a match made in heaven. We scoffed them pretty quickly!

We also ordered their bao buns which were freshly steamed with soft shell crab, white radish, carrot, coriander and kewpie mayo. This too was also really nice, the soft shell crab had that crunch and the bun itself was light and fluffy. We ALSO got the shimbu fried chicken. By the time this came out I could only eat one piece because I was so full so Davin pretty much cleaned it up.

For dessert we ordered at Tenzin’s recommendation the deysee which was sweet rice with sultanas and nuts. It also came with some coconut ice cream which balanced out the sweet rice well. A really nice end to such a feast.

Overall, it was a great experience. The food was fantastic and great value, service was really good and we loved the vibe of the place. We would highly recommend you check it out. Thanks again to Tenzin and the staff at Shimbu for your hospitality!

I think this place is okay, but I think with a few simply changes it could be something special. The chairs need backs; stools are not okay for a meal any longer than 5 minutes or a price higher than food court. We were sitting on a sloping table which is again not great for stools. Lighting could be better with candles on each table. Need to be more flexible with menu items- pork and chicken could be interchangeable in the roti dish?Food wise; yummixed dishes throughout the table- see pictures. all delicious. I had the salad and roti with yoghurt. yoghurt was boring but probably good with a curry. wish the waitstaff had let me know it was too benign for roti dipping (there were both expensive compared to the other food also).

Before eating here I'd never tried Tibetian food. This place has a lovely decor and yummy food. Most of the food is fairly cheap at about $15 for a main, but the roti in particular is expensive at $2.50 a pop. Service was friendly but the food came out all over the place with some people eating whilst others waited and waited for food. I feel this may have been because of the large group so would be keen to try again in a smaller group.
Another good thing is 5% off for cash payment.

Shimbu is East Brunswick’s newest Tibetan inspired eatery. On the Italian dominated street, the Sha Momos and Sha Khatsa are conspicuous against the margheritas and carbonaras. Plenty of warmth from aromatic curries, steam rising from hot dumplings and the comfort of carbs to hug the soul.  Shimbu is a family owned business, with plenty of heart and warmth to make you smile. The family have created a modernised interpretation of Tibetan food. There’s still the traditional momos, but heck, I

Our favourite dish was the Shimbu fried chicken served with sweet chilli mayo and chilli sauce. Crispy & flavoursome!

The chicken curry with coconut milk and vegetables from the traditional menu is also very tasty.

We would love to go back and try the pork belly soft tacos and Bao!

The cocktails are very reasonably priced however, we found them to be quite sweet.

The milkshakes are a great addition to the menu - great flavours including Golden Gaytime & Reese's Peanut Butter.

Been a regular customer for the restaurants on lygon street, brunswick. Saw this modern new restaurant which just opened, thought we'd go for dinner and some drinks. Food was very good, great selection of modern and tradition tibetan food. Was quiet surprised by the good selection of drinks which were also available. Service and atmosphere was outstanding, Pricing was extremely fair. Would highly recommend.

Newly opened place in Brunswick East. Was recommended to me by friends who know I love a good dumpling. Was not disappointed! Staff were very friendly and courteous. Had the fried chicken and some dumplings. Was very impressed with the quality of food and general setup of the place. I have no choice but to come back here again as there is so much choice on the menu and my stomach can only handle so much goodness!

I work opposite this new restaurant, so had to try it out. It's family run from what the waiter told me. Has some really cool
decorations and paintings.

Sat at the bar with my wife. Great range of beers and they've even got my favourite beer mountain goat :) my wife enjoyed the berry cocktail (forgot the name) which she loved. Had the vegetarian dumplings fried, they were amazing and the chilli sauce was extra spicy as requested. For mains has chicken with mushrooms and pork belly tacos (these were the highlight of the night) glad to see these guys are doing something right, I've already booked in dinner for me and my wife again for next week. Overall 9/10

Delicious clean food. The beef momos were plump and juicy. The layered Tibetan steamed buns are a must try and an instant favorite for me. I had them with Sarsha and they went beautifully together. Also tried the thukpa. The noodles have a nice bite to them and they are served with just the right amount of soup.

First time try of Tibetan flavour. I may say that the restuarant met my expectation by delivering a unqiue taste in cuisines. The dishes were light, perfectly cooked to taste and delicacy. Good job guys..:)

Outstanding food. They have mixed Tibetan ingredients with a variety of styles and the end result is absolutely fantastic. The fusion tacos are a great choice. The spicy pork is a must try. Coconut rice with one of the mains is a great combination, absolute winner every time we come here. Interesting for a date night, fun for a friends' night out, and you have interesting dessert options nearby as well. Totally recommended.
