Review Anh Minh - Brunswick East

Phoebe M
My new favourite spot. The food is always so delicious, especially the Vietnamese vermicelli bowl with chicken or pork! The owners make you feel like you are in their home, they are so lovely.. The restaurant overlooks Lygon street so it is also a really good people watching spot. Thank you Anh Minh.
Elizabeth Howes
Lovely restaurant. The owners are so friendly and make you feel at home. The chicken pho is such perfect comfort food, and there's a great variety of other dishes too. A nice and heartwarming place ☺️

This place is a hidden Gem, if you are looking for good food, good price and friendly owners that is the place for you! Lovely food. My favourite plate are pork ribs with Peking Sauce and Beijing Pork dumplings. Food : 5 Stars Service: 5 Stars Price: 5 Stars

Incredibly well priced, delicious food, incredible range (100+ options) and friendly service. You can’t fault Anh Minh. No frills at its best

Great menue with beautiful food that was very tasty. Service was friendly relaxed and efficient.

Food is tasty and they have a vast menu. Long time family owned too which has become a rare sight. So good, still going during lockdown.
Ian Marks
Consistently delicious, fresh tasty food and extremely reasonably priced. Good service too. Have been to Anh Minh several times now over a few years and have not once been disappointed.

Ahhhh what can I say about Anh Minh!! Lovely family run business with authentic Vietnamese food! Service is attentive with great recommendations provided to help sieve through their extensive menu! Mongolian chicken on a sizzling hot plate 🔥, king prawns 🍤 with veggies all accompanied with a side of special fried rice. Yum! 😍 Huge portions but more importantly quite exquisite flavours. No complaints. Kinda like choosing between Rooney or Van Persie to lead your attack in their primes.... simply can’t go wrong! Will definitely be back 😊

I went to Anh Minh the other night for dinner, walking in there was a strong smell of stale cigarette smoke and a dead cockroach under the table I was seated at. I try not to be too critical so even with those things I was willing to give them a chance. I ordered beef and ginger noodles and my friend ordered crispy chicken and rice. The noodles were mediocre and flavourless, the same sort of basic stir fry I could make at home. The 'crispy chicken' was four dry, dessicated pieces of grey chicken that looked like they'd been cooked in a dehydrator. We complained to the staff that the food was basically inedible but they couldn't care less. It's a shame that this restaurant is clearly being run by people with absolutely no pride in their work. I will never go back and will recommend to my friends to avoid at all costs.

Reasonably priced, but wasn't very satisfying when we were craving some Viet.

This place was good for a quick lunch located in Lygon st, Brunswick. I ordered wonton & Bbq pork egg noodle soup ($12). It came quickly, and great amount of veggies which was very refreshing!

The food was OK
We waited almost 45 minutes just for the foods to come out, ordered char kuwtiaw and it doesn’t taste anything but spicy
The other foods were ok

This straight forward, laminex table restaurant is a good choice for cheap Vietnamese food. It's not up there with Victoria Street or Footscray for Viet food, but the food is tasty, cheap and quick (which is how wok food should be, doesn't mean it's not fresh). Service is good, beer cold and cheap, and this is my goto for a bowl of good pho.
Jng
Asian food good enough for a casual dinner, nothing fancy or spectacular. Prices are standard. Service prompt, sometimes too prompt it feels a lacks the ‘good’.
Belle Eats Melbourne
We live around the corner and had walked past this place often. We finally went there for dinner the other night. First up, it’s not a great place to eat in. The atmosphere is pretty non existent. But we could look past that if the food was good. Unfortunately it was very disappointing. Cheap cuts of glutinous meat swimming in salty thick sauce which tasted like it was from a jar of kantong. The place has an identity crisis, it’s meant to be Vietnamese but in reality, the dishes are a mish mash of Asian cuisine - Thai, Malaysian and Vietnamese. There are way too many options and the food comes out too quickly to be fresh. The only good thing was the price. Unfortunately we won’t be back.

We really wanted to like this place. However all the dishes we ordered tasted extremely frozen and completely lacked flavour. My partners rice dish was saturated in oil and my Tom yum dish had a hint of a old cloth smell and again all veggies tasted frozen. The noodles also tasted very rubbery and old. Hence why I may have spent the rest of the night in the bathroom. Although it is cheap it was not worth the stomach pain after. We will not visit again.

The thing to remember about Anh Minh is that it is very very cheap. There is no real atmosphere - bright cafeteria style lighting with no music and everything feels a little worn and dirty, so many may prefer to takeaway and I know I will be should I choose to eat from here again.
Service is quite friendly and very prompt. When asked about gluten free we were very surprised and happy to learn almost everything on the menu is! However this was backtracked a bit when we tried to order and were informed that one of our dishes had soy sauce in it and advised to order something else.
We ordered the quail entree and the pork with Chinese broccoli and garlic sauce. It is a whole quail for only $8! Extremely cheap although it did appear to be cooked from frozen being a little dry and the sauce it came with wasn't especially tasty. The pork was very tasty, a large portion size, tender and lots of greens. It really was very generous and I can't fault it.
Based on reading the other reviews here it seems important to order the right dishes, particularly those from the Chinese portion of the menu, and considering the difference in taste between the dishes I tried this seems accurate. I find this disappointing and it has definitely affecting my rating. If you're looking for some cheap eats and don't care about atmosphere or are looking for takeaway I would recommend Anh Minh but maybe avoid the Thai dishes!
Eucalyptus
Anh Minh is open at lunch time! Most other Thai restaurants aren't - based on my searches through Zomato.

I ordered takeaway which was ready for me when I got there.

Everyone enjoyed it, and remarked that each dish was noticeably different from the usual Thai fare.

I had the green chicken curry, which went down well.

Not just Vietnamese cuisine ....

Location wise, very handy on the food esplanade of Brunswick East. One of the few Asian cuisine, seems like the only Vietnamese restaurant judging by its name.

Not much in terms of set up, quite a pleasant service.

Food wise, not the most authentic Vietnamese cuisine, more like a compilation of South East Asian cuisines. Salt & pepper Calamari, Sweet & Sour Barramundi, Vietnamese Chilli Beef and Prawns Salad.

BYO wines as there aren't much option.

Average food, good value for money and quite enjoyable. This place has my favourite pho ever! I have tried so many places around the Brunswick area and always end up here cause it's so damn delicious, fresh and cheap! But don't overlook the other dishes on offer! The stir fries and noodle and rice dishes are equally tasty and very affordable. I usually get takeaway as there isn't a heap of ambiance in the place, but if you're after a cheap and easy feed it's fine - it's also BYO. 👍

Ordered the Beef Hot Pot. Beef was tough, inedible, full of fat. Not even really stewed - more like barely braised. Pretty sure they found the oldest possible. When I raised the issue they were unhelpful, wanted to charge me for a new dish and the female owner just argued. No refunds given for serving an endible dish.

Steamed rice was ok.

Save your money, there's better cheap eats around.
Food123
Not worth the $3 you might save on your meal. Food is crummy - chicken is cheap and fatty. Not to mention the 50 minute wait for our take away (told 15 minutes). Head 2 minutes up the street for much tastier options and way better service.
Mr. Sasquatch
Pretty average. Staff were friendly but food just OK - not a very good tom yum soup (though it isn't a Thai restaurant), satay dishes were a bit bland and pretty spicy despite this not being mentioned on the menu, as were the wontons strangely. Not bad altogether but plenty of better options around
Vegan Foodie Boss
As a regular here I just have to toot their horn as loud as possible. Tonight's feast was OUTSTANDING.
Amazing service
Amazing food
They cater to us, a family of vegans and everything is exceptionally tasty. Nothing left to photograph 👍
Sylverine
Wonderfully unpretentious, beautifully fresh and delicious. Genuine, warm feel to the place - really enjoyed it. Had light and tasty seafood noodle soup - fresh and tasty with choice seafood cuts. Lovely service.
Alcobon
With so many good restaurants around in this place, I honestly don't know how it continues to survive. The service is mediocre, the food is unremarkable, and the restaurant itself has a dirty feel. It's cheap for sure, but as other punters have said, I would prefer to spend a few extra dollars and go to the numerous restaurants surrounding this place and get better value for my money.
Bili Mckill
I ordered veggie Pad Thai & Roti with satay, unfortunately it was all unpleasant.. The Pad Thai was made with the incorrect noddles, it was extremely oily with zero flavour.. The roti was soggy with the taste of burning grill, and was also soaked in oil, and the satay sauce was like a KFC gravy textured goo sauce with a slight satay flavour..

It is fairly cheap I guess but personally I prefer to spend those extra few dollars for cleaner, fresher more satisfying experiences from Thaila Thai a little further up Lygon st👍🏼.. Or for something fancier and full power flavour Tom Phat on Sydney Road with Sth-east Asian cuisine meets west..

Very good tasty Vietnamese/Chinese and a stand out in Lygon St Brunswick East where anything not Thai is in short supply. Friendly sweet staff. Frequently get takeaway from here. Very good Chinese style food from a Vietnamese family business. Favourites include old school tasty chicken sweetcorn soup, Peking pork ribs, pan fried pork dumpling which are really good for a not dumpling specialty place and satay/curry stir fry type dishes.

Some constructive feedback, spring rolls should be Vietnamese style with iceberg lettuce and Vietnamese mint. Customers won't mind if they were a little more expensive or at least offer a choice. Also the combination seafood dishes are dollar more than pure prawn for instance but are just a two or three prawns, kinda chewy frozen pineapple scored squid and some cheap fish so a bit disappointing. Maybe some scallop?

They give free prawn chips with a decent takeaway order!
Queen Of Food
Lots of variety on the menu and serving size is perfect. The rice paper rolls are a nice starter. I've been a number of times to Anh Minh and never been disappointed.

Vegos pay attention. If you are vegan or vegetarian, DO NOT GO HERE. asked for veggies, served seafood. Send it back. The 'veggies' I was served tasted a bit off. I thought, I'm just being paranoid. At half and BAM I find a PRAWN.
Ask for an apology, receiving nothing.. lucky I'm not allergic.

Simple & hearty home cooking at its best - we had the mapo tofu and sweet & sour pork dish. It did not disappoint. Great for those craving momma's cooking at a decent price.
Brunny Girl
Quick & easy local.
The salt & chilli calamari and the seafood hotpot is pretty good. The Ma Fo Tofu is fantastic, I have it at least once a week. Chong ging chilli chicken full of smokey chilli. The staff are always super friendly and they are always happy to alter dishes to suit.
Tom Ryan
Ordered from the menu online. Price was different upon collection. Specified clearly for the szechuan sauce not to be too wet nor sweet but spicy was okay. It was sweet and wet and not spicy at all. Disappointing. Ordered the chicken and lemongrass as well which was fine although the portion sizes are small to just fair. I am sure others will do better, however for our first time, it leaves me happy to try other options.

Fantastic. Staff are on the ball and the food is consistently great
Lok Mac
Tasty vegetarian food. Egg plant and tofu curry especially. Most other veg dishes are simple but tasty. All veg mains are gluten free. Decent laksa (but ask for extra chilli if you're a chilli fiend. Friendly staff and homely atmosphere. Quite cheap at $10-$13 per main.
Coffeemonkey
Possibly the worst meal I have ever eaten. This is, hands down, the worst Vietnamese food I have ever eaten. The spring rolls were soggy and had hardly any filling. The vegetarian rice paper rolls just had vermicelli and about three juliennes of carrot. The worst is the chicken - weird and slimy pre sliced, pre packaged chicken in the coleslaw. The veges were not fresh. The chicken ribs were flavoursome enough but the actual chicken inside was greasy and stringy. Wish they would lift their game as would love some decent Vietnamese food in Brunswick.
@qqHsiao
Taste just OK. Overrated. Money sign should be two at least
Grant Baker
Stingy. Place charges an EXTRA $2.50 for some lettuce to accompany TWO serves of spring rolls (no basil or mint) - They whinge if you ask for takeaway cuttlery and the salt and pepper sauce (to go with the salt and pepper calamari) is ALSO EXTRA! ??? Was all very stodgy and tasteless too - wont go back.

Love the food here always fresh and tasty. Friendly staff. Cheap and cheerful love their beef pho and the prawn rice paper rolls yum!
Jenmcbain55
Yummy seafood laksa soup.
Inexpensive and quick friendly service.

Great food, quick friendly service, very well priced - a real Brunswick favourite. Char kway teow is fresh, robust and bursting with fresh ingredients. Great specials board too.

Best beef pho!. Love a beef pho for lunch from Anh Minh! Tasty flavours in the pho, always fresh ingredients, excellent value for money, topped off with great, friendly service.
Lightning Bolt
Food is always fantastic. Great service and very well priced!!

Best Asian food in Brunswick. It's delicious, cheap and they are super friendly.

I love this place! Clean, great food, great service, great prices! Absolutely a regular for me!

BAD! if you know good chinese or vietnamese food you will be disappointed. The food is no good. seems cheap but it isn't if you byo and add rice and entrees. no attention to the flavours of the food. really bland and cheap food. seems like little to no care is taken. i ordered a dish with chinese broccoli and it was drowning in oil and bland. the rice paper rolls only had prawn and vermicelli - with no nice mint flavour. just no good. not worth your time or money. it was the second time i'd been there. first time i had a laksa and it was no good but i thought maybe i just ordered the wrong thing. staff were ok though but i think they are more focused on getting the cash money than making good food. i won't be going back.

Absolutely brilliant food. My wife & I had a total of 6 dishes and, honestly, every dish was perfect. There simply were no faults. Every dish was bold, confident, fresh, generous & irresistibly tasty and the service was friendly & efficient. Sensational little eatery. Definitely going back regularly from now on.

Always tasty. I have visited Anh Minh on several occasions now and have never been let down with the taste and standard of food. (I would highly recommend the Salt and Pepper Chicken Ribs and the Pork and Eggplant hotpot)
It's great value for money, has a great selection to choose from and the staff are always friendly and helpful. If you visit when the place is full you may have to wait a bit for meals but it will be totally worth it. I would suggest at these times ordering food to share rather than individual meals so if one of the meals takes a little longer it doesn't matter.
Will keep visiting this place as I never feel let down.

This place is the bomb. Don't know why others who dislike it because it takes "half and hour", eat at home you stains (doesn't say fast food on the sign). But the place is cheap, nice, staff are friendly and everything on the menu is awesome. Highly recommend :)

Wide variety of Asian dishes. I love cheap Asian food so enjoyed my meal. The people I was with though only like authentic high quality Asian food so they didn't like it very much. It's a mix between Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese food, but wouldn't class it as authentic. Will be back for a cheap lunch though.

The best value food I've experienced in melbourne after living here for just over two years. Friendly staff, really quick service and delicious food. They have an 8 dollar lunch special, I think it's between 12 and 3. Unreal
Rockabetty
Cheap delicious eats! Friendly staff and so crazy cheap. Entrees start at $4! The food is delicious and there is so much variety!! We eat take away from there too which is always prompt service.
Steven Joshua-James
Pho sure!. These guys reinstated my faith in a good quality Vietnamese Pho.

Friendly staff too.
GregT
Good, cheap food.
EatlikeaCorgi
Quality cheap eat. We enjoyed our dishes of steamed wontons for entree and the tom yum soup with bean curd was spicy hot and 'hot' hot!! (you don' always get 'piping' hot soup, but you do here).
Our pork and eggplant hot pot was the highlight dish. Next time I will try other hot pots from this restaurant. The chicken stir fry with lemon grass and chilli was a bit of a let down. The chicken itself was excellent, but we couldn't taste any lemon grass. The serving of rice was generous.
The decor could be improved somewhat-not a particularly cosy feel to the place, but service was excellent. And, its BYO beer or wine!!
Rebecca
Delicious!. I do not live anywhere near this restaurant, but make the trip on a regular basis because I love the food and the service. The staff are really friendly and helpful. The meals are large servings and very cheap. It may not be the best in terms of 'authentic' Vietnamese food, but the food they serve is delicious. Our favourites are pork spring rolls, steamed wontons, salt and chilli calamari, crispy beef with sweet chilli and grilled chicken with lemongrass and chilli. There is no questioning the value for money here - it is fantastic! If I lived closer, I would be there every night!!!
Lindsay
Great Value quick service. Great for quick easy cheap dinner. Try the Szechaun chilli dumplings and the pork dumplings too. The other dishes i've had so far are all pretty good too.
Kathleen Mitakakis
This is a bit of a fav when hungry and not interested in cooking. Love the hotpot eggplant dish!!!
Ted
Well worth a visit. Good food at a decent price, all the dishes we've tried have been well prepared and delicious. The staff are courteous and efficient. My wife and I enjoyed our first visit so much that we have since been back twice without being disappointed.
Frank Servello
Good honest food. Pork ribs and lemon chicken to die for. Takes me back to Vietnamese & Chinese restaurants of old. Shall be back!

Pretty Happy. I moved to Carlton North a year and a half ago and love it but the only thing I found difficult was to find was a good, decently priced Chinese Takeaway restaurant. I've tried several in the area and in Brunswick and they're either good but very overpriced or cheap but you know why. It wasn't until recently that I noticed Anh Minh tucked away at the beginning of the East Brunswick end of Lygon St. I have to say, I haven't tried a lot on the menu - when it comes to Chinese takeaway for me, I usually crave it when I'm either tired & emotional or hungover or both, so I tend to go for the usual comfort foods. I measure a good Chinese restaurant by how good their Lemon Chicken is - and I can happily say that their Lemon Chicken is excellent. So is their Short Soup, Fried Wontons & Special Fried Rice. My fiancé tried the Pad Thai noodles & Rice Paper Rolls and found them to be below average but I guess when you choose Thai & Vietnamese food items from a Chinese restaurant it is to be expected. I have ordered from here several times now and have yet to be disappointed. Very consistent. Price is good too - for my usual 4 dishes it comes to around $26 (enough food to feed at least 2 hungry people) - and you get free Prawn Crackers if your meal is over a certain amount (can't remember how much exactly, around $40 I think). And finally the added bonus is they have Eftpos. All in all, very happy with them. Totally worth it as my takeaway option when I feel like breaking the diet.

Good for price. Since we are brunswick locals we eat here from time to time as there are absolutely no good asian restaurants in brunswick! ...Anh Minh is ok ....just ok.
Far from traditional food and most of what is on the menu is just made for western mouths and would struggle to find the majority of what is on the menu on menus in other asian countries so dont come here expecting traditional food.

BUT.... what they do ,they do well and reasonably cheap to boot with what i feel are generous portions. My only wish is the beer would be cheaper then I would buy it.
Ive had very bad guts from here 1 time and I mean BAD! but ...i still end up coming back here as there is just not anything else around brunswick and I cant be botherd battling traffic to go to footscray richmond.

cheap ,good portions ,western style asian food this place i can recommend ....STAY AWAY FROM BROWN SUGAR THAI NEXT DOOR!!!!
CR
Disappointing. Didn't have a very good experience at all. After waiting for over half an hour, we cancelled our order. When we complained, they weren't the least bit apologetic and told us that half an hour is normal, and if we don't like it, we shouldn't come back. We certainly won't.
Libby Rule
Tasty, inexpensive and fresh. I love dropping in for a cheap dinner that is none the less healthy. My favorites include the rice dish beef satay which has just the right amount of chilli to make it interesting and has plenty of beef and crisp vegetables. A steal for $8.50! Another favourite is the pork with eggplant in spicy sauce. For entree I love the rice paper rolls.
Food In My Tummy
Really lovely staff. Good food and wonderful hospitality, feels like eating in a home away from home : )
Green Frog
Amazing dishes. I've been here for a few time and really enjoy the food. i agree that there are more Chinese than Vietnamese dishes but i love them all. i reckon the crispy beef, the chongqing chicken, spicy quail are the best. and dont forget the coleslaw, its delicious. enough' bout the food, the owner and staffs are also friendly and helpful. i definitely recommend this place to everyone i know.
LiRo
Very impressed by the meals we enjoyed here this evening. Very fresh & flavoursome. Though the menu is quite broad, our meals of chicken pho & combination noodles were great. We're locals & we'll be back.
Crave
Greener pastures elsewhere. It's not hard to fake reasonable Vietnamese food, so how does Anh Minh manage to get it so wrong? Perhaps it's the lack of attention to detail that results in the absence of flavor. Although the omission of fresh herbs, lime juice, lemongrass and chillies suggests no-one has bothered to buy a VN cookbook. Insulting the food by overcooking the vegetables and skipping on decent dressings and garnishes suggests no-one cares.

Perhaps they should just settle on dishing up average Chinese food. Would not survive amongst real VN competition in Richmond.
Joss
Friendly service! Clean and delicious food.
Boiled_eggs
Great Spot. Love this place, food is great, fresh and well priced. Always enjoy our visits to Anh Minh.
Seamus Patrick Curtain-Magee
Cheap, fast, friendly and delicious. Hard to fault this place.
Omnomnom
Cheap Easy Delicious. Anh Minh is a fantastic addition to the collection of restaurants on Lygon Street Brunswick with its friendly staff, cheap meals, generous serves and tasty dishes. Also great for an easy dining option of takeaway!
Ed
More Chinese cuisine than Vietnamese, I reckon. The dishes though mostly simple classics are competent, satisfying and reasonably priced with many under $10. A welcome addition to the array of international cuisines on the Brunswick East strip and an inexpensive option for a casual meal or takeaway.
Addy
Also, everything is fairly cheap here, most dishes comes in big servings and are mostly around the $10 range.
