This has to be some of the best food in Melbourne. We have been coming regularly for the last couple of years and have never had a meal that has been less than amazing. The service has always been friendly and welcoming, and we have always been made to feel at home. Very highly recommend.
4.5
I made another visit to this rustic, authentic Sicilian restaurant in the quiet East Brunswick end of Lygon Street and it never disappoints. It’s very close to a tram stop, thankfully.
The restaurant sits in between simple, cheery Italian food and fine dining. The pasta is hand made; there are many Sicilian dishes on the menu and always some interesting choices on the chef’s special board. It is a small restaurant playing uplifting Italian music. Good for couples or larger groups and not noisy. Great that everyone can see the cooking.
We were a group of two couples. We started with some grilled sardines for entree, which were perfectly cooked and a generous serve. My friend had the Zappa de Pesc, a bisque of fresh seafood in a light bisque. beautifully presented and delicate. I had the gnocchi lamb Ragu ( rich lamb shoulder) served with the pan it was cooked in; it was wonderfully fresh and tender.
The other two chose the pasta special of the day; Orecchiette with prawns, other seafood, broccoli and almonds. again, perfectly cooked and an unusual mix of fresh fish.
For dessert, two shared the Tiramisu which was lovely and light. The other couple shared the Sicilian Gelato: a vanilla gelato with roasted almonds and glazed cherries; flavoursome and light.
The compact wine list has significant variety. Four whites ( all different varieties); 2 roses and about 10 reds. A mix of good Australian and really interesting Italian wines from Veneto, Abruzzo and Tuscany. For the quality, reasonably priced. This restaurant also allows BYO at $10 per bottle.
So for a nice night out in a casual atmosphere and very good and interesting Sicilian food, I’d strongly recommend.
Nice Sicilian restaurant in Brunswick. Good food great service and atmosphere. The chef, being Catanese based knows and understands how the food goes together within the true cooking tradition.
A very warm and inviting genuine traditional Italian restaurant. The Sicilian food on offer is simply amazing. There is something to be said about eating food straight from the pan it was cooked in. Strongly recommend the Sardine Beccafico. The service is also excellent and owner is quite welcoming.
Not your typical Italian restaurant...rustic, authentic Sicilian food at its best! Salvatore (the owner) is warm and friendly and does an amazing job! Thoroughly recommend!!!!
Amazing fresh authentic Italian food! Great service- everything came out together. All nine of us ordered different dishes and were all equally impressed. Highly recommend!!
Couldn't wait to write a review on this place. I was there this Sunday and this is one of the best places to enjoy an authentic italian food. Delicious zuppa di pesce and linguine al cartoccio to dye for. The staf very friendly. I would suggest it to everyone, you won't be disappointed.
Thank you The Stone Mill 347, will be back again :)
One of the best places to get some pasta in Melbourne. Some people say the price is high but you can have a great meal for under forty bucks.
Loved the name for willl give it a go.. wasnt disappointed family were satisfied.. staff pleasant.. quality ingedients and great seating....
We went with low expectations- but the food was amazing. Nothing could be faulted. Exceptional quality and excellent service and the food was to die for. The mussels were incredible, the best sauce soaked up with crusty ciabatta. The freshly made ricotta cake was still warm. Highly recommend.
This is a little gem tucked away on the quieter Brunswick side of Lygon Street. Much better than any of the restaurants on the Carlton side. The pasta dishes are obviously fresh and that's quite rare. As others have said the pricing is on the expensive side but food and service are good.
Went out for my partners birthday and the staff were really nice and friendly. The food was amazing, me and my boyfriend both had the gnocchi and it was the best we had ever had. Everyone else was also super happy with what they got as well. The interior is really nice and quiet. Overall just a super place would recommend!
Hit this place up people! Husband and wife own it Italian of course and such lovely people with passion and knowledge on what they are selling. Pricing is on the higher side but when you taste the food it's worth it . Environment , service and food quality won't disappoint will be coming back regularly to try everything
For me, the best thing about this restaurant are the owners. They are friendly, attentive, and make you feel welcome and at home. Their hospitality makes this restaurant so memorable.
The food is nice, not mind blowing, but good enough for me to have visited the place a few times already. My favourite dish was the gnocchi with gorgonzola.
I think The Stone Mill is perfect for a mid week date night.
Love the Stonemill - the pasta dishes are delicious, particularly the gnocchi and lasagne and their tiramisu is one of the best I have had. Recommend a visit (book first as it is very popular)
My sister and I came to The Stone Meal after having a hard day. We were cared for by the staff, who were attentive, without being pushy. We came for a comforting meal and received more than expected. The meals were quite flavoursome. We had the grilled prawns for entree and goat for main course. Thank you to the owners for the memorable evening. We will definitely be back and will be bringing more along with us.
The food is excellent and always consistently good. Very close to being the best Italian on Lygon, if it isn't already! Gnocchi Gorgonzola is amazing.
Caught up with two friends at Stone Mill last night. Lovely warm friendly atmosphere, very traditionally Italian. It's an ideal place for slow meal and a long chat. I had the risotto which came served in the pan it had been cooking in. It had a nice nutty flavour but lacked that rich earthy taste that you sometimes get with porcini mushrooms. On the other hand one of my friends had the best, softest, fluffiest gnocchi I've ever tasted. I know what I'll be ordering next time.
Truely smelt good. Lovely atmosphere. Lovely decor. Good vibe . Cannelloni was perfect, fresh, spectacular flavours and rare to find restaurant whom makes freshly made pasta. You got my attention. Pizza was also quite tasty . Also made home made dessert gelato ;) delicious flavour.
This is one of the best Italian places on Lygon St, the staff are great, the food is excellent and it's good value. Have been a few times and the meals have always been top notch. Staff are Italian but don't shove it in your faces like the places further south on Lygon.
Great food, a bit costly but well worth a visit.
Staff get a bit anxious as the place begins to fill-up - with the exception of the younger wait staff - she was calm throughout.
I had one of the secondi specials... a seafood bisque which has a wonderfully tasty sauce, with fish, calamari and a mix of shellfish - it was let-down by the inclusion of cheap, and rubbery, prawns - please use Australian...happy to peel them myself rather than have those cheap things...sorry; oh and some bread to mop-up the juices would be good - I had to ask and it came back toasted... not ideal. I'd still recommend it though even if it was costly at $34. My partner and I shared two entree dishes the jalapeno with the scallops both of which were delicious - but my...those chilies are hot...YUM! And I do wish we could have an even number of scallops would have 33% more to get a serve of four. My partner had the gnocchi Gorgonzola as a main - delicious she said.
Overall, not bad - I think they need to calm down a bit more haste, less speed - then they will be able to give smile a little more often and maybe - notice that more bread is needed for those hot jalapenos - before we have to ask for it. o:)
My partner and I went here after wanting to go for agggggges. It met all our expectations. The food was simple yet delicious. We had the saffron prawns to begin which were amazing. My partner had the Gorgonzola gnocchi and I had the special cannelloni. Both were cooked with love and the chef even watched us take our first bites as he was so proud of the meal he has made. It was gorgeous. The wine was lovely and the atmosphere friendly and authentic. A little on the expensive side but I'm a big believer in "you get what you pay for" and these were top of the range ingredients cooked to perfection.
Such a lovely restaurant. The food was authentic, hearty and delicious and the staff so friendly and warm. Will definitely return on a regular basis.
By far the best of the best! My sister lives right next door, so we thought we'd give it a shot on her first night moving in, we expected to get fed, what we didn't expect was to be so well served- the staff here are like any where else, and the food is by far one of the best Italians I have ever eaten. I'm not much of a lover of Italian food, I think it's well, boring, but what I got served completely changed my opinion! The food is by far one of the best on a street renowned for its Italian food, and the staff are by far the best I've ever seen, the service was flawless, the taste of the food is limitless and I highly recommend visiting this hidden gem when on lygon!
We couldn't believe we found this place, and so close to home!
This is a lovely restaurant that has great service and serves delicious Italian food. It's beautifully executed classical Italian food with great ingredients. I used to live around the corner and liked the breakfasts but mostly went in for takeaway pasta or pizza. Only once did I eat in properly which was a little pricier than I'm used to but definitely good value for money with the quality of the produce and the atmosphere. Keep an eye on the specials board for some seasonal and interesting dishes.
Was here for a nice brunch with my family a few months ago. I was impressed as I'd only ever had coffee and their lovely donuts here. Really nice food and the servers are very attentive and polite! The owner is a lovely man who my mother had a great chat too. I will be back here if in the mood for some good food and likeable service.
We love Stone Mill!
My husband and I have been here a number of times and every dish we have tried is delicious. Great service too.
Try the stuffed sardines, seafood linguine, the mussels, they are a few of our fav's!
Great food. Last night was absolutely amazing. Authentic italian food. Excellent service. Thanks to all the staff. we'll be back.
Beautiful food and awesome atmosphere .... The food is amazing. The sardines were beautiful and we had the best gnocchi in melbourne, so fluffy and tasty. The owner is very friendly and you feel like being at home. We definitely will come back and we reccomend it.
Beautiful food. HOWEVER!. This place is really beautiful for its food, nothing better than fresh and enjoyable.
Had a function on the weekend and everyone enjoyed it, HOWEVER! make sure you confirm prices before you have your function. We had 14 people, and were charged $400.00 for entrees only which consisted of two 15" plates of cured meats, 14 bruschetta and 14 pieces of sardines. We had booked for 7.30 and our meals were not bought out till 8.45pm. Was not very happy when I received the bill. Other than that I would highly recommend it.
Super honest food and service. The food is decadent and high quality!
Great service! Tasty authentic Italian cuisine served in a quaint atmosphere. We'll be back ;)
Beautiful. I don't write reviews often.
The gnocchi is beautiful. So soft. The service is equally beautiful. Roberta and the gentleman with the glasses and another lady were just so friendly and welcoming. Living just around the corner means I will be back all the time!
Gorgeous food, lovely customer service!. A friend and I walked into Stone Mill by accident for a late lunch yesterday, it was so good that we came back for dinner the same night. Amazing food and even better customer service! Will definitely be back again, loved it!
Quality food, more than meets the eye. Looks a little drab from the outside, but the interior is nice. The service was pleasant, and the food was great.
Great food, great service. The food is always great, and the service friendly and helpful. A fantastic little Italian gem in Brunswick East.
This will now be a regular breakfast spot. They have gluten free for those in need and soy milk. Despite my first impressions the atmosphere once I was seated was relaxing and the staff can only be described as charming. This cafe was recommended to me by a colleague. My only regret? I didn't come sooner. I had a simple spinach, eggs on toast with a hash brown. I will be back for dinner for sure. This is rustic Italian at its finest. Sick of Lygon St, Carlton? Keep driving and try this. Warning: The coffee is nice, not spectacular. I had mine with soy milk, a colleague has been here and said that he loved it. The food is organic, pescatarians are catered for, as are vegos and people with gluten/dairy intolerances.
This place is amazing! The authentic fresh quality of the food is the best this side of the city..so fresh & tasty a must try! and the service is delightful friendly layed back & fun. The owner is soo helpful & makes sure you are happy. He has a great personality. We have been coming here for months and will definetly keep coming back! We have brought friends here and recommeded it to everyone! It never disappoints! Finally a quality restaurant in the area!
Outstanding food and service. We have walked passed many times and thought we should try this place out.
Well today was the day and we weren't disappointed. The service was outstanding - friendly with lots of advice on what the menu offered.
We started with the calamari which was lightly dusted and beautifully tender. It was served atop balsamic drizzled rocket and was a good size to share. Next came the diavola pizza (hot salami, tomato base, mozzarella) and rocket and pear salad. The pizza was one of the best I've had in Melbourne - and I've eaten at all the big name places. The dough was thin and light, the tomato sauce was perfect and the toppings were high quality. It was a good size to share between 2 people. The rocket and pear salad nicely balanced the pizza and was fresh and tasty. Almost forgot to mention the pan fried fresh ricotta with rosemary - this was a really lovely dish. It was nicely browned all over and had a mild rosemary flavour. A nice light addition to the meal and not overly salty like haloumi.
Our host tempted us with dessert - a rolled pancake filled with lemon curd and mascarpone. We were pretty full but couldn't resist. The pancake was amazingly light, topped with crumbled toffee pieces and was filled with the tastiest mix of curd and cheese. It was served with a small bowl of ice-cream and strawberry. Absolutely unbelievable. We wished we didn't have to share.
The menu was a good size with many things we will start to try on our next visit - which will be very soon.
I highly recommend the Stone Mill for fabulous service and beautiful food. It is a great addition to this part of Lygon Street.
Great Service. Loved this restaurant. The service we received was excellent and the food even better!
We ordered the bruschetta of the day, which was ricotta and artichoke, and the veal and pork meatballs with tomato ragu to start from the tapas menu. This came out very quickly and was delicious. Then we were going to share the pappardelle al amatriciana off the specials board and the chef divided it into the bowls for us which was a great help. Then we shared a tiramisu. All 3 staff helped us at certain points of the evening and were very accommodating, the waitress even pulled up an extra table when we ordered so much food!
We didnt order the affogato but another table did and it looked amazing! Will definitely be returning to try this.
The decor was rustic and the lighting was perfectly ambient.
Definitely worth a visit!
