Review The Grandview Hotel - Brunswick West

Lunch with grandson. Cosy place, very friendly owner. Great menu, very generous servings and reasonable prices. Will definitely come back again

The food and beer selection is pretty good. Some of the staff were friendly and helpful, others were extremely rude and angry. Totally bizarre. We booked some tables outside on the assurance that there were plenty of heaters - for some reason, when we asked for the heaters to be turned on we were told "none of the heaters work!" Only to watch a staff member replace the gas bottle in a heater beside another table for some other patrons. Not sure why we were treated as second class citizens - we were there through a quiet afternoon period in which we all ate and drank a reasonable amount. We definitely won't be rushing back!

I visit every couple of years for a meal, and this place never fails provide such great meals. Certainly very good value too. This time the excellent and attentive service was particularly evident. Thanks

Our local in Brunswick. Staff are awesome and great selection of food and drinks. The steaks here are really great! One thing, if you could organize to have Guiness on tap I’d be there everyday haha!

Some of the best pub food I think I've ever had, Grand View definitely punches above its weight as a local suburban pub. With a handful of delightful surprises on the menu, excellently executed pub classics, and a solid beer and wine list, this has quickly become one of my favorite pubs in all of Melbourne.

Great place to grab a beer and some lunch. Great service, clean and friendly. Highly recommend Grand View Hotel.

Been waiting to go here for ages. Excellent service and excellent food. Great country feel. Big servings and attentive friendly staff. Will be back. Tuesday night is burger night and Parma night is Wednesday.

Great meal and good wine list, good atmosphere best you book or get in early as it is back to the good old days.

Had a pub meal on a whim here last night. Went with my husband. The bistroe was empty so we were seated promptly. The waitress was lovely and very attentive. Chicken wings for starters, I ordered the snapper fish of the day and my husband went for his trusty Parma. The wings were delish but would have loved a dipping sauce to accompany them. My snapper was cooked to perfection and large in portion. At over $80 with two drinks, this is not a cheap pub meal but the quality was great.

UPDATE. Went for the Sunday roast a couple of weeks ago. Wow. It was a Pork belly with braised cabbage and taters. I like pork belly but was a bit wary of the braised cabbage UNTIL I tasted it. Sublime flavour. The crackling was perfect and the pork soft and juicy and the cabbage was a huge surprise it was so good. I asked the lovely waitress (service was good) to pass on my compliments to the chef. Will return again. <br/><br/>-----------------------------------------------------------------<br/> Its been some time since this place was reviewed so thought Id bring you up to date. Weve been here numerous times for dinner and been very pleased each time. Ive had the Sunday roast a couple of times and its cheap and of good quality. My most recent visit I had a steak and it was tremendous. Smokey and flavoursome from the grill yet soft and cooked perfectly. My dinner partner said the Parma was good and looked good size. The chips are top notch. The desserts are fine and the drinks are well priced. I prefer this pub to others in Brunswick as the foods better. Its a bit of a locals secret.

Nice pub. Food was good and waitress was lovely. However, service was extremely slow. We waited a very long time for our food. It was for a special occasion and we weren’t in a rush so all worked out ok.
Hello
Yes! The local. Amazing food, excellent pool table and great beer. The vegetarian options are crazy good, especially the Baked Eggplant. One of the only bars around that serves good IPA.

Just wanted to share my total disappointment with the food tonight! If the kitchen staff can't even cook steak or a chicken parma then there are real problems. I had the eye fillet steak ordered medium rare, but it turned out to be a small, shriveled, leathery tough piece of meat that even my steak knife was having problems with. The staff agreed with the feedback after I left the majority of my plate, and they offered to replace it with something, which was reasonable. I asked for a chicken parma, pretty simple. But once again, overcooked with a denatured, tough and half-crumbed mass of chicken sitting under the melted cheese and tomato. We didn't eat it, got up, paid the full bill and left...sorry guys, wow, what a shame. Won't be back and will make sure we let others know.

Great pub food and a relaxed vibe. I especially appreciate the range of vegetarian options which is a nice change from the usual pub choices. The desserts are also great

Good food and good atmosphere, friendly staff. A nice place to hang out, play some pool and have a few beers amongst having a very nice pub meal.

It’s redo week! The week we revisit a pub that has already been reviewed due to changes in the menu, recommendation that it has improved or gotten worse since our last review, or for pubs that we feel just didn’t get a fair shake the first time around. Brunswick’s Grandview Hotel has been on our redo list for quite some time – Pretty much since we walked out the door the first time we reviewed it.
CheeseAndCrackers
We we went for trivia night which was great, but the food was phenomenal and had a huge range for not only meat eaters, but Vegos, vegans and gluten free-ers as well. Tasty and delicious you could order small plates, or regular meals. The prices were on the higher side for a traditional pub, and the fit out is still a traditional pub with a paint job, but to be honest they're worth it. The chef is really pushing himself here, and I like it. Will definitely  be back.

Went for the first time tonight great food, really good gf options which were important to us, terrific service and just a nice ambience, love this local will be our regular
Parmasofmelbourne
Before the establishment of Parmas of Melbourne, we came down to the Grandview Hotel quite a few times. We loved the parma here. We just recently realised we had never reviewed the parma here, so off we went for a reviews sake.<br/>Walking in we straight away noticed the grand view had undergone some changes. New bar tables and decor. It was looking nice and shmick.<br/>Anyway to the parma.<br/>A 30 minute wait and the parmas had arrived.<br/>The parmas did look a tiny bit different. I think it was mainly because of the cheese but we will get to that later.<br/>The chicken breast had not been battered down one bit. Nice thick , fresh chicken breast just the way we like it.<br/>The crumbing was on point. Bit burnt around some edges but we love it nice and crunchy. To some the bird may have been over cooked, but as we said, thats the way we like it.<br/>The napoli was the good stuff. Fresh home made napoli which did good things for the bird.<br/>The smoked ham made its presence well known as it carried some good flavour.<br/>The cheese was standard mozzarella cheese. It could of gone a tad longer under the grill but i must admit the cheese was nice and creamy which gave the parma a distinct texture. If it were under the grill any longer, the edges would of turned to charcoal.<br/>The chips were thick beer battered chips done very well. They were nice and crunchy and seasoned well.<br/>The salad was also impressive. Fresh leaves dressed and seasoned well.<br/>The parma tasted just like we remembered it which was definitely a good thing. An awesome close go-to in the back streets of brunswick is what the grandview is to us. The parma is definitely not photo genic, but you should never judge a book by its cover. We promise the parma here is nice and tasty and a definite bang for your buck. <br/>7/10<br/>Price: $22
Parma Daze
Last night’s parma was an interesting one. A few weeks ago we were contacted by a group of Swinburne students who are making a documentary… about parmas! Seeing as the only thing I like more than talking about eating parmas is is actually eating them we jumped at the opportunity to have a chat with these guys, So last night we headed down to The Grand View Hotel in Brunswick West and experienced what life would be like if we turned Parma Daze into a reality TV show. We arrived and met up with the crew, along with Stephen and Riley who would be joining us for our parmas… When we visit pubs for review we do our best to remain anonymous – We want to get the same parma that everyone else does. For the most part we are pretty successful with this, we might get some strange loo

Safe bet. I frequent this pub quite often and I've never been disappointed. Its a cozy hotel where the locals can eat out and always get a decent meal and friendly service. Antonio is hands on and his staff are cheerful and dedicated. I enjoy the vibe this pub has and I must mention that the 'pie of the day' is certainly a safe bet any day of the week!

It's the basic bit*h of pub fare.. Really slow service (under staffed perhaps?) but verging on the ridicious, it was not a busy night but still it took 20-ish minutes for two glasses of soft drink followed by the 45-ish minute wait for seriously average, remarkably basic food.<br/>Food sits for an eternity at the pass in the kitchen before anyone can be bothered running it (makes me worry when the chef has such little regard for his finished dish that he's happy for it to sit, getting cold on a pass, while wait staff are nowhere to be found), so much so, I was tempted to go up myself and grab my own damn plate of over-priced, lukewarm food. Gross. <br/>Oh, and the atmosphere is practically non-existent. Wanted it to be my new local, but it looks like I'm just not that into you, grand view

Sliding. Tapas was great. Main meals very ordinary. Service as good as the meal. Definitely not as good as it used to be

Wonderful venue, location and staff.. Grand View hosted my daughter's 21st - have nothing but the highest praise for this hotel as a function venue. The food was wonderful, the setting perfect. My highest praise reserved for the staff and manager: helpful, friendly and professional. A great venue.

Menu. Do yourself a favour and order the calamari salad spectacular!

Fantastic place for a function. I couldn't speak highly enough of the service provided when you use the upstairs function room. Nothing was too much trouble and Mel delivered outstanding service. The food was fantastic and the space is well set out. There is also a jukebox which you can use your I pod to play your music at no extra charge. I would highly recommend for your next function as you won't be disappointed. On a side note the food in the main bistro is always good.
Mrs Reynolds
The best service - friendly, attentive staff. Excellent food with good sized servings of tapas, and the Parma special was huge.

Upstairs Function Area - Recommended. We held a family function in the upstairs area of the Grand View on a Sunday afternoon in January. Everything went smoothly, the food was plentiful - delicious tappas, dessert and fruit platters. Antonio the owner and Mel who looked after the bar were friendly and professional. Everyone enjoyed themselves, the prices were reasonable - highly recommended.

This pub has a great vibe, and the staff are extremely friendly. There is a great selection of food on the menu, and can be enjoyed in either the relaxed bistro area or in the front bar. Highly recommended.
Cabsav
The best pub in Melbourne. <br/>The staff and owners are extremely friendly and all the food is sensational. I'm a local and I love this place.<br/>If you want fancy pants food, go to an over priced restaurant at Southbank, but if you want great pub food at great prices and with generous portion sizes this place it the place to go. <br/>There's a pool table, beer garden, public bar and a bistro that is family friendly.

Heard a review for this old fashioned pub tucked away in Brunswick West and gave it a go on Saturday night.<br/><br/>A table for two in the relaxed bistro was perfect - could hear each other talk and my girlfriend didn't complain once about the temperature. <br/><br/>Started with a tapas board of four dishes - perfect prawns, tasty chicken wings, lamb and pork belly - for $29. Could have tried another four different dishes on the night and doubt we would have been disappointed. All were at least 8/10 dishes with the prawns rated a 10 by the seafood expert.<br/><br/>We took up the offer of a 15-minute break before main meals were served.<br/><br/>The beef pie - complete pastry shell, not in a bowl - was tasty and filling. The meat inside was very good. Served with a simple salad and perfect hand-cut chips. <br/><br/>The calamari salad was too big to finish but very good. The seafood expert reckons those in the kitchen have nailed their marine-life meals.<br/><br/>All in all a great local pub feel with top food and attentive, friendly staff. No hipsters but I'm sure they'll find it soon enough!

Okayish. Most of the food is pre cooked and reheated. I wouldn't re-heat fish that I had already fried and kept in a drawer for my son and nor should they. How do I know this? I saw them prepare his meal. That said, I am sure many restaurants and pubs do this. It is ok food that is quite expensive. Try it if it is local but don't expect much and be aware that most of the food is pre prepared.

Great Local. I love the Grand View!<br/>Finally Brunswick West locals have a place to go.<br/><br/>The staff are fantastic, always going out of their way to help and accomodate you, ensuring you are happy with your meal and to fulfill any requests you may have.
Brunswick West Local
Consistently disappointing. I really want this place to serve a decent meal because it's just blocks from my house and I am a lazy person with money to spend on food. I'm not upset about the prices, food is expensive everywhere. The nasty part is the food itself. Over the past year I have attempted to like this place several times. All attempts failed. Tonight I had the weirdest pizza I have ever eaten. The base looked kind of raw but when pulled apart, it was dry like a cracker. I'm not sure what flour they use, hopefully I accidently got the gluten free base because nothing else could explain why tasted so wrong and biscuity. It was about 10 inches (super small) and cost $14 (the same size gluten free costs $17). Go for a beer but don't touch the food!! Oh, but the staff are always nice.

Great pub. Went to the Grand View last night for the first time with 17 family members for a birthday dinner. I must confess I was a bit hesitant as to whether the pub could cater for such a large group, well there was no need to worry, Antonio the owner who I met, and his staff were fantastic. Now for the food, I ordered the Flathead tails which were very good and plenty of them I think around 6 pieces with excellent chips with aioli, My wife ordered the hamburger which was up there with Neil Perry's Rock pool burger. All meals came out hot and nice timing, not too fast. The mixed tapas was a great starter with a good variety of produce. Prices were reasonable, good servings, fantastic staff and something you don't see too often in local pubs was table service for both the food and the drinks. As a group of discerning wine drinkers we liked the choices of wines which whilst small, was all vineyards from respected regions with little or none of the big boys on the list and to that I will say the wine glasses were what I would expect from a five star restaurant which some pubs don't get so well done. The only observation would be that the wine selection on the website did not match the wine list on the night. It is good to get away from highly commercial wines these days with so many small producers out there, its good to explore our great wines of Australia.

Average over priced small serving meals. Went about a month ago and was great. Took friends tonight and was very disappointed with the change of menu and staff. Also found a piece of a broken plastic container in the apple crumble, which was also very average.
Mikep
Great menu.. Very reasonable prices for the great range of meals on offer. Good quality healthier options as well as standard pub fare (including awesome american style ribs). Nicest customer service around, and also nice low noise levels. All round great local.

You have to go !!! Best ever risotto with smoke salmon ! I have never eaten a better risotto and have eaten a fair few. I never expected this treat at a local pub. Great service too.<br/>Brunswick bitter and smoke salmon risotto best ever combo, I will be back !

Pleasantly surprised. A friend and I went for dinner on a whim and were pleasantly surprised by the variety of food on the menu, the good range of wines by the glass, the efficient service and the quality of what we ate. Yum. Will go back

$9 pizzas, cheap beer... SOLD!. The Grandview is just the best pub around. Cheap $9 pizzas, always have beer specials and the staff are so friendly and helpful. Always happy to visit the Grandview (Ski-lodge).

I was impressed when this place came under new management. It was a dive before. The beer selection is a lot better now, and the food is good, although a bit pricey.

Celebrated my sons 21st, fantastic venue, staff great very accommodating to all our needs. Finger food was delicious, overall a great night. Highly recommend for any function

5 stars food * 6 stars service!!!. Food and service evidently with heart in it! Dinner last night was decidedly Grand View will be our regular, and will be "the show off" to friends and visitors!

Amaaaaazing!. To say that we love the new revamped Grand View Hotel is an understatement. Our new local has become our weekly weekend breakfast bar with 2 for 1 breakfasts on Sat AND Sun til 4pm...which is awesome for our hangovers! The service is amazing and all the staff have great characters. Antonio (the owner) is always there to greet you when you walk in the door and bring our hungover sore heads ice cold water as soon as we sit down. <br/><br/>The food is great, they are happy to cater to any food needs and everything is fresh. The bacon and eggs are awesome. <br/><br/>The pub has definitely become our second home on Saturday and Sunday mornings/afternoons/whenever we're alive from the night before
Adrian
Have to say, the best Parma I've had in some time & I've had many. $22.50, good price for a good Parma. Try it & tell me I'm wrong.

Best In Brunswick!. I have visted all pubs in the area. However, finally a pub with great service, a selection of wines, good quality food! the place offers something differnt than other pubs in the area, and that is SERVICE!! Keep up the good work!
Peter Evans
I thought the staff were really friendly and helpful. Unfortunately its so overpriced as previous reviews have stated. A pint of beer in a suburban pub should never be over 9 dollars as it is here. I pay less than that for beer on Southbank with nice views of the city and river. The food looks good but once again is expensive. It seems happy hour times are the best times to visit and they advertise a 2 for 1 breakfast at the weekend. I really want this place to be a success because its so close to be but pricing really needs to be reviewed.
SJ
Never again. Over priced, poorservice. Some guy with a big attitude served us, mate its just a pub. Food ok but expensive for what you got. Better places in the area
Guy
Guy. Great to see the Grandview reopened, bu I have some concerns. Sure, the food is great but overpriced for a pub meal. My biggest gripe however is being asked to hand over $5.50 for a pot of Coopers. Slapping a coat of paint on the walls and reinventing the menu does not give you the right to raise tap beer prices. Go down the road to the Union and Coopers pots are $4.50. And guess what - the pub is always full...
Robert Rompante
Thank god this place is in better hands. The grand view is by far one of the top pub restaurants in Brunswick. Service and food was outstanding. Hats off to Antonio and his staff. Hope more people frequent this little (big) hideaway venue. Will be back with family.
Goldie
Doesnt work for me, expensive!!!. Dont come here expecting pub meals ..the parma is the only classic pub dish and it looked small. all the prices are very high and the beer is very expensive for a local corner brunswick pub, They have ditched the pub food vibe and tried to go a restaurant with a dingy pub bar attached and it just doesnt work for me.<br/>Inside the restaurant is big but looks very sparce and just feels emptyish ..needs decorating ..pictures on the walls atleast. <br/>the service is very pushy and hadnt even finished my beer and the waitress is asking me for another ..and they WONT just leave you alone ,to ask them for a drink when you are good and ready so be prepared to be hounded like a restaurant. <br/>im afraid i will not return here why? food and beer too expensive ,small serves nothing flash , vibe feels weird and your always hounded to by more drinks.<br/><br/>a shame really as this is next to my house and i could have benefited by having a good ol pub meal and a pub priced beer frequently but I feel theyve tried to make this into something that doesnt fit the "local" decor if you know what i mean ..2 thumbs down!
The Famished Fork
HUGE improvement!. My husband and two young children dined at the Grandview and were pleasantly surprised. The service was brilliant - very attentive and friendly. The food was delicious and the selection and price was great. The steak was lovely and big and juicy. The bruschetta for starter was a bit overrated but tasty enough. The kids menu is also great. Ambience still needs a bit of work with it feeling a little sparse and sterile, but its very clean and modern. All in all a great update to what was a dodgy old corner pub. Looking forward to taking advantage of the sunny beer garden for happy hour on a Saturday.<br/>PS. There were no highchairs, but apparently they are on the way. The entrance to the restautant is a little confusing with the restaurant door being closed so had to walk throught the bar with the kids which was strange

Great Service. My newly reopened local within walking distance from home, great service and friendly staff, agree with Rod, food is a little pricey but of reasonable quality, now thinking about it perhaps better than your average pub grub standard! Would love to see a summer menu, most of the mains appeared to be heavier.

Great Pub, Great Food, Great Service. I have to start by complimenting the excellent & friendly table service at this place.... even in the beer garden. Secondly I have to compliment the food, the menu is great & very modestly priced. The tapas were a very generous serving, the mains were also a decent portion of food & it was of an excellent quality.<br/><br/>It has a great beer garden - in the sun!! & the table service was regular out there too, we never ran out of drinks!! <br/><br/>The interior has been nicely renovated and makes for a great, relaxed dining atmosphere- without the stale beer smell that a lot of pubs have!! Street parking out the front is not a problem and only a block away from the tram line. Excellent little pub close to home that I will definitely go back to!! Im glad I discovered it & definitely recommend it!!
Rod
Slightly overpriced for food compared to other suburban pubs, however I do feel the produce is better than most and the service is top notch.
Tash Wagner
I've just moved into the area and this is my new local. I hear that the Pub was run into the ground by the previous owners however the new management seem to have turned the place around. The people are lovely, the service is great, the food was really good and the beer garden is nice in the sun. Definitely recommend it :)
Aaron Restin
Best Parma in town - good service too. Nice to see Grandview has re-opened - I kind of feel for the new owners as they have a bit of work to do to change<br/>history that was left behind with the previous owners. Although the Hotel is still a work in process - I was rapt with the Chicken Parma... as sad as it is I eat them wherever I go... and this is certainly in my top 3! <br/>It wasn't over the top with size... and it was swimming in chips... it was the perfect size, packed with flavour and the right balance of sides! <br/>I'll be back over time to try a couple different dishes and after speaking to the new owner... he is young and seems very passionate to get the place<br/>back on track - it's nice to see he actually understands the industry... so I can only imagine it's on the way up from here! Service was spot on too
Kristian Gunn
Now Open. A great fresh menu that is complimented by the spot on service. I had an amazing Portahouse and my partner had an equally as tasty serving of the Chili Con Carne. Will definatly be back for second servings.

So close but so far. We were very excited to see the old pub had re opened and was desperately hoping to see an improvement in the food, ambience and service.....and whilst 2 out 3 in my book ain't bad- it ain't great either - and this pub really has the potential to be great. <br/><br/>The food was fresh and good quality for local pub grub and the service was friendly and attentive. The price was reasonable mains btw $22 and $28 although I thought $5.50 for a pot of coopers was a bit steep. <br/><br/>But what really let this place down was the ambience. The music was like something from a Chinese restaurant circa 1987 and the place felt clean but lacked warmth. I believe they are still in the process of finishing the fit out- or at least that what it felt like- but some pictures on the walls wouldn't go astray. <br/><br/>Overall - I am sure I will wander back in at some stage - but with so many great places offering comparitable food, similar service and a hell of a better environment we wont be rushing back.<br/><br/>Highlights- the Chicken Parma - the best I have had for a long time.<br/><br/>Lowlights - the music and attmosphere.

Renovation is complete. Very nice food. We had the Chicken Parma and Gnocchi. Wine list was good enough for a local (non-gastro) pub. A highlight was how good the service was. Very glad this is my newly reopened local and within walking distance.
Sugarbabe
Grand View Hotel. What a fantastic local pub. I had the Salmon steak and my husband had the Kangaroo which was cooked to perfection. My children had the chicken parmas and fish and chips followed by ice cream. It was so lovely to sit and enjoy our meal in a kid friendly environment. There were other children there and the atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable. We will be back regularly!<br/><br/>Thanks Grand View!

No atmosphere.......... no point.. What a lost opportunity... what could have been a good local ruined by bad (really bad) managment
