Quirky little place, but yummy food, decent coffee and low prices. The staff are charming. The decor makes me feel like I’ve gone back in time, but in a nice way. Worth a visit.
Best place around to get your straight up avo on toast at the price it should be, $10. Served on top notch sourdough at just the right thickness and rightly accompanied with a lemon wedge. Its the simple things 👌🏻 Coffee is great here too. Perfect combo to chill in the sunny courtyard.

Sometimes living in Toorak/South Yarra gets a bit boring. Even despite being away from the area so long nothing really ever changes... so we drove across to Brunswick to try something NEW.
And it turned out great. I don’t know why we don’t come across to this side of town often yet I felt like a pie and saw on urban list it was noted as one of the best pies in Melbourne. Oh it really was!
We were served by lovely staff. Happy and smiling, we ordered a butter chicken pie, burgundy pie, beef sausage roll, a pink cupcake and a jam donut. Added two coffees and a ginger beer and it was $40. Bargain!
My little one scoffed the cake side of the order and wouldn’t share any of it but I managed to get a dot of jam on my knife and it was delicious in that donut.
My beef pie was absolutely stunning. The pastry was crisp and buttery.. great meaty filling with no gristle (my pet hate)
My partners chicken makhani pie was really really good. Indian in a pie is a great idea.
There weren’t many seats inside or out front available as it was full of patrons so we went out back into the most beautiful garden.. sunshine + pies + coffee + happy children was a great lunch.
We will 110% be back next Sunday to try more!
Sugardough has an amazing selection of Breads and very affordable breakfast options. The sourdoughs are delish and always so fresh, great coffee, and their smashed avo is around $10 and so so good. Also try their veggo pie if you’re in a rush - hard to find a good veggo pie these days but they’ve got one.
Haven’t tried any of their pastries yet, but we always come here for the quiches and pies and it’s delicious every time! Really good value for money, especially the quiches as they are quite big. Coffee is great too. Quite a small place so seating can be quite limited, but really cosy atmosphere and friendly staff. One of the gems around here for sure!
Nice hidden gem in Brunswick. I loved the little cookie that came with my latte! Breakfast pie was great value, and it was savory too. Lemon slice was bit sweet for my taste. The place is small but we were lucky to grab a seat. The only downside I noticed was a fly hovering above the desserts...
This is THE best croissant I have ever had. I got the almond one and I can't believe I've lived my life thus far without experiencing this. Also had the granola and it was delicious 10/10 recommend
Busy bakery. French Italian! Nearly always jam packed with people no matter what time of day. A good sign of good food! Everything prepared on premises.
Service can be a bit eratic and slow, however the wait is worth it.
If you are lucky enough to get a table their daily specials, especially the soups, are magnificent.
Nothing seems to have changed here, save and except for the change of management. The assorted vintage bakewares and cutleries still adorned the place, the counter is still brimming with pastries, cakes and tarts, and my cup of latte still came accompanied by a tiny dove (or maybe duckling) shortbread bickie.
The latte was just what I needed for an afternoon pick-me-up. Strong and smooth, a great brew indeed.
Feeling peckish, my partner ordered the prosciutto panini and he quickly found out that you should be careful when you’re eating. The ciabatta bread was a bit tough and overall a bit dry, and made contact with the roof of his mouth. Nothing major as he still managed to quickly demolished the panini.
Would have liked to sit a bit longer to take in the quaint and homely atmosphere, but as they were closing for the day, it was time for us to head off.

Sugar dough Panifico & Patisserie is an adorable little cafe located on Lygon street in Brunswick that serves cheap homestyle meals in a cosy family friendly environment. Although this venue is tiny inside only seating a max of 20 people on minuscular tables for two, there is a garden out the back to accommodate for large parties. The mishmash of cutlery, furnisher and old fashion crockery sprawled on the walls truly makes this cafe one of a kind. Upon entering one is immediately drawn to the squishy counter littered with an assortment of freshly baked cakes and pastries with savoury paninis and pies behind a glass cabinet. The wooden shelves house freshly baked breads with homemade jams and there mighty organic fresh free range eggs. Everything is made on the vicinity and whipped up in style in the small kitchen with ease.
After previously visiting this cafe for a quick takeaway and remembering it to be rather good, we entered Sugardough again on a cold late Sunday afternoon to a moderately busy atmosphere but comfortably got a tiny table for two next to the wall with a perfect view of the blackboard menu. Observing that it was an order at the counter deal we got ourselves comfortable with the Sunday age and pondered upon what to order from the large array of items scribbled across the board. After seeing dishes arrive around us we quickly ordered at the counter deciding to go for the roast vegetable, pesto and feta tart along with the organic granola with yogurt and strawberry and rhubarb compote and a long black.
The long black arrived quickly with there trade mark biscuit of a tiny little duck shortbread cookie. The brew was hot and thick with a lovely dark aroma and was as good as I remembered it to be. Shorty after our meals arrived looking mouth-watering we couldn’t wait to dig in. The roast vegetable, pesto and feta tart composed of oven roasted capsicum, zucchini, eggplant on flaky puff pastry with a side of garden greens and tomato relish was a huge slice of antipasto goodness. The shear size of the tart that was hanging over the plate was utterly delicious. The vegetables where all cooked to perfection ensuring that the thin pastry was not soggy at the bottom. The standout would have to be the tomato relish that was pleasantly sweet and the perfect complement to the flawless tart.
The organic granola with yoghurt and strawberry rhubarb compote served with soy milk was equally as enjoyable and filling. Firstly the granola was littered with every sort of nut one could image toasted to perfection in a sticky glaze. From almonds to walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, macadamias and more this was essentially just a bowl of nuts with a few clusters of oats and seeds. I love my granola chunky and by god was it chunky with whole nuts filling the bowl to the brim. The granola was overly toasted so it was almost on the bitter side just how I like as it wasn’t overly sweet and full of sugar. The thick dollop of creamy tart greek yoghurt was a match made in heaven with the sour yet subtly sweet stewed rhubarb and strawberry compote. The generous serving of soy milk coated the dish pulling all elements of the dish together. This was by far one of the most filling bowls of granola ever consumed due to it being almost only made up of nuts but we pushed on and finished each dish as they were too good not to finish.
Sugar dough is a fabulous humble little cafe that is sure to deliver excellent freshly baked goodies at a dirt cheap price. The food may not appear anything specials but I can ensure you all dishes pack a punch of flavour and the coffee is equally as good. I will certainly be returning to this great establishment as the staff are utterly friendly and the comforting environment is perfect for a relaxing afternoon treat.
Met a few friends here for brekkie before we posted a parcel to a friend (post office next door). Hidden little gem indeed! We all ordered the scrambled egg pannini. They only had a few to start with so you've got to get in quick. The coffee was creamy and delicious. The brekkie arrived quickly and was tasty and cheap at $10 a pannini. Love the use of free range eggs. There aren't too many seats inside so in winter you've got to fight for a table. Quite cramped inside as well. Service is slow due to only one cash register and I think I heard one staff member say that they are cash only which is annoying. Overall a nice experience. Will be back (come early, with heaps of time and with cash)!

Great cafe and bakery. Excellent selection of pastries in the cabinet. Whether your are craving croissants, doughnuts, cake or pies there is always a great variety available to satisfy any sweet craving.
Almond croissant - not the best I've ever had but quite good.
I'm almost reluctant to mention the super cute courtyard at the back, as I'd rather keep it a local secret.
It is a really special bakery cause the desserts are all not too sweet(fairly perfect for me) the highly recommended! Love the croissant and another one made of apple and something (sorry I forgot the name...) anyway, soooo good!

I often wake up with the mother of all hangovers. Well, on weekends. Weekdays I like to keep my mind as sharp as salt and vinegar chips on chapped lips (Chapped from kissing? Probs. Maybe. Def.)
I spend the week crushing menial tasks - coding easy grunt stuff at work and then am busy doing krav maga twice a week and being an administrator on a forum until the early hours of the morn. Although I have been known to indulge a little too hard in some of life's more salacious vices (generally bourbon soaked) - I keep it surgically clean from Monday through to Friday 3pm.
What happens after is a tres different story. After one too many (more like six) liquid disinhibiters and a late friday date, I'm generally feeling and looking not too dissimilar to an anesthetised (alpha)bear. In this state my body needs fat, carbs, sugar and coffee - four things I limit during the week and then I get 'naughty' both gastronomically and socially. I'll sit in a cafe and run through my notes from the night before, if you want to get good at dating you've really got to put in the effort to improve. It's much like a game of strategy without dice (although not always ;) ). I've been on 28 dates this year alone and can recount all aspects of each encounter systematically. It's something I pride myself on.
I got a croissant (it was called like a coronet or similar) from here and it was pretty good.

Amazing food and great prices. My husband and I regularly travel from the eastern suburbs to have brunch here. We love their menu and the homemade, organic, free range options are wonderful. The relish served with their savoury tarts is to die for! Their coffee is also great which is a must for Melbourne. Come give them a try!

Really delicious pastries from here, usually stick with a roasted vegetable quiche which comes with a homemade relish. Haven't tried any of the sweets but they look amazing!
Deliously good for you fruit loaf, beef mushroom pie with tomatoe relish, jam and custard donuts and a caffeine fix, fit for this mamma.
The fruit loaf is stated on the menu as a 'must'. This fruit loaf is as good as Babka's fruit loaf. The differential is there are apples in Sugardoughs. Very nice n crusty.
The beef n mushroom pie has hints of rosemary. So if you like the companionship of beef with rosemary, you will certainly love Sugardough's take of this union.
The custard donuts had a hint of lemon in the custard, so if you love lemony sweets like a lemon meringue pie, then you will love this take.
Coffee was just as impressive with a yummy little shortbread cookie to tickle your palette.

Adding to the above with easy street parking and trams every few minutes, there is no reason not to stop by.

I picked up the most divine loaf of bread this morning for a brunch I was hosting. The Tuscany bread was divine- dense and moist, just as described! The lady behind the counter was smiley and helpful. I will definitely be back again. Their array of pastries looked so damn good. I'll try them out next time I'm not yo yo dieting. Did I mention my loaf of bread was still warm?! Deadly! 👍🏼

Old building, not too much renovation, keeping some its vintage features; footpath, front room and the backyard garden with a big communal table. The front dining area, where the action is can be a little squeezy, not a place for private intimate conversation, to the two young ladies seating behind me, we can hear you.
From the Panini Bacon & Egg, Breakfast Pie, Choc & Raspberry Brulee, OJ, Coffee all good, but we can't try them all, too many good things on offering.
Simple Recipe, quality ingredients, prepared well, on the premise, just have to come back again to enjoy this unique vintage venue.

Visited at around noon on a weekday for brunch. The cafe has a warm, homely feel to it. We were seated on a large communal table at a lovely courtyard at the back. The service was friendly and prompt, and the food is very well priced. My cappuccino was fantastic, and came with a cute little sugar cookie, which was a pleasant touch. My friend and I shared the breakfast tart and a potato pie. Both were tasty, but we both preferred the breakfast tart. The gooey, melted cheese made the tart so divine! I finished off my meal with a large brownie. It was OK, not the best brownie I've had. It was rather hard and dry on the edges from being overbaked. Overall I was very happy with my meal and look forward to returning.

Came here for weekday brunch again. My large cappuccino was accompanied by a cute little duck cookie again, and both were just as good as last time. I had a panini this time, which was very generously filled with scrambled eggs, avocado, cheese and tomato relish. A simple but delicious combination of ingredients! Sugardough is quickly becoming a favourite!

Visited on Sunday at around noon this time. The cafe was the busiest we have seen, but most people were lining up for take away so there was still plenty of seating available. Ordered a beef and barley soup this time. It was a generous serving of hearty broth filled with chunks of tender beef and veggies. Very flavourful and warming. I wish the bread it came with was toasted though. It also came with a huge chunk of butter on the side which I didn't use. I took away an almond cornetto, which made for a delightful afternoon snack! It was light and fluffy and not sickenly sweet, so it did not feel too decadent and didn't leave me feeling overly full.
Wow! What a hidden gem! Amazing little place (+ extra seating out back!) with lots of hustle and bustle (be willing to line up!), all with a genuine vibe. Excellent staff who were friendly and prompt in their service and a series of food choices that were A+. Ordered with a Groupon and the service was fantastic. The coffee was excellent; served in a large glass (with a biscuit) and the menu items were endless! I'd definitely recommend to others. Congratulations to all staff of Sugardough on maintaining a winning formula of great food, great pricing and all round great surroundings; please keep it up!
Had breakfast here with my sister . Had there freshly orange juice and a breakfast pie it's amazing I love it and it's so filling ! Will be back to have it again ! Also they have a lot of sweet baked goods to chose from .
We've been coming here for over 10 years and have never been disappointed. Hearty meals, quality ingredients, great value, lovely staff. They use free range chicken and eggs, organic flour and beef.
Come here for a down to earth approach to food, not for fancy schmancy unpronounceable ingredients at an exorbitant price tag, that leaves you feeling hungry after you've just finished your meal!
Sugardough is a nice cosy cafe and very friendly customer service. I tried the coffee, croissant, and roasted vegetable and feta tart . The food and coffee were pretty good. I thought the egg in the tart tasted very fresh and then found out apparently they use the freshest egg you can get. The price is also quite reasonable. Overall, it was a very pleasant dining experience and would highly recommend this place.

The Italian Hot Chocolate is to die for! So so so deliciously dense! Food is delicious and pretty cheap, considering the location and the quality- great place!
Sourdough is quite the departure from your obligatory bacon 'n' eggs, so if you're looking for something a little left of centre Sourdough is your place. On the downside it's quite compact in size so you may struggle to find a table, but you'd do well to persist as it'll prove to be worthy of the effort. Overall Sourdough comes highly recommended. Expect to part with around $10 ph + coffees :)
This place is close to my house and up until recently, I didn't realise what I had been missing by walking past it each weekend! The coffee is great and the food is well prepared and fresh. The back seating area is cool and I like the great selection of pastries.
My boyfriend and I go to Sugardough AT LEAST 3 times a week. We have four other cafes near us (one right below us) but we always make the trek to Sugardough as we have never been disappointed. We usually each get a pie, a coffee and a dessert and it never costs us over $30. The coffee is the best coffee I've had in Melbourne. The avocado on toast is another winner - they give you a whole avocado! You won't be disappointed.
Love the food at Sugardough! It's now my second visit to the store and have to say the prices are very reasonable for the quality tasting food. It's more than you typical cafe menu, lots of uniqur pastry items. Only improvement I would make is to the layout of the store as it's quite a small space for the amount of customers on a Sunday morning.
I was extremely sceptical when I saw how black my vegan sunrise muffin was on top, as the piece of apple was so burnt. However, once I removed this, the muffin was undoubtedly one of the best I've ever had! It was so moist and with a delicious crust on the outside! Will definitely be coming back for this muffin again and again!
Love this place. Sweet and savoury. Originals and favourites. It never disappoints. Go for the breakfast tarts and the cakes near the register.

I love any bakery cafe but especially one that serves amazing bread and pastries with elegant vintage crockery. It is the sort of place where pretty girls sip tea from bone china cups before picking up a fork to eat a dainty cake on floral plate. At your table you might overhear someone talking about starting a blog about artists they admire. On a weekend you might queue for a baguette, a bombolini or a batard but it is worth the wait. Sugardough offers a perfect experience for all the senses.
Lovely spot, will be back.. Had the breakfast pie and camembert quiche, both delicious.

Sugardough remains a nice casual cafe that is a favourite of the Brunswick locals which offers non-fussed pastry and coffee. There is a wide variety of pastries, hot pies and rolls to choose from, and I would certainly make it a point to make my way through them in future. I’ll be back.

There is something very satisfying about getting a great meal under $10.
Sugardough, a petite café that sits elegantly in the midst of plenty of taste. Good coffee that satisfies the pallets with a warm and pleasant texture to soothe the morning rush. I am led belive the Chai was fresh and with little doubt left, tempered to wish for more. Nothing beats the need to avoid that excess sugar in the coffee/chai when the coffee alone satisfies that craving.
Great place for brekky!. Had the egg and bacon panini with relish. frantastic buzz and atmosphere, friendly staff etc. Would highly recommend trying this place out

Oh. My. God! By far the best hot chocolate that I have ever had! I've tried many, but the Italian Hot Chocolate was so thick, creamy & rich it was absolutely divine! The staff were so friendly & helpful. Very child friendly, even if it's a little tricky manoeuvring the stroller past the tables.

Great little cafe. This place shines in the winter. Warm, cozy, delicious food and consistently great coffee (especially by the purple-haired Brunswick local chick). Chicken Makhani pie is a total winner (make sure you say "yes" to the homemade relish). Always very reasonable prices, and very large selection of lunch items and sweets. Friendly staff always make you feel at home.
Cute cafe. I loved the vegan muffin but was a little disappointed at the vegan sweets range. Great service and enjoyed the sourdough loaf I took home.
Excellent cakes. I've ordered birthday cakes from here twice, and each time at the party the cake would always be completely cleared out, not a piece left. The pastries here are beautiful as well.

Cute!. Bought some cupcakes from them on a voucher and they were great. My colleagues at work gobbled them right up! Staff were friendly too and the other desserts looked delicious.
Not as good as it used to be.... When this place opened several (?) years ago it was brilliant, but standards have slipped... I'm pretty sure it was sold a few years back which may have something to do with it. The coffee has never been great compared to other local offerings. That said, their sourdough bread is terrific, as are the bomboloni and the Bee Sting is sublime... the pies are also worth mentioning - esp the Chicken Makhani It's just sad when a place slips a bit, particularly when it's your local!

Sugardough is a quaint shop, the main feature being a glass cabinet filled with an array of fresh cakes, tarts, brownies, doughnuts and pies / pastries that are made on site. It's a step back in time and brings a smile to your face. We had fresh jam doughnuts and other cakes. Coffee is excellent and staff are happy and attentive. We were really impressed and will return.
Two birds. One stone.. Amazing! Great, friendly, well oiled service! Try the bee sting! But the best is a creme brûlée / tart hybrid... The best of a creme brûlée with its creamy centre & crispy toffee top combined with crumbly, sweet pastry tart base. I died & went to heaven on that combo.
