Review Sweet Evelyn - Brunswick

Very Chill and Fresh cafe. I got a regular latte, their coffee is a bit weak but very good, I may get an extra shot next time. The chicken sandwich is very tasty. And the most important thing, the staff here is very nice and friendly.

We always had great service and food at Sweet Evelyn, but they went above and beyond 🚀 when we called them to do a gender reveal party at their outdoor space! The backyard is very spacious, green and dog friendly, with a bit of sunshine in the afternoon (super cozy ambiance with heaters). 🌿🪴 The food is always fresh, delicious and well served, and the coffee is consistently brewed with perfection ☕️ And of course, the staff is so friendly and fast! 💕 We couldn’t be happier for choosing Sweet Evelyn to held this special occasion! Highly recommended!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lovely courtyard, lots of options, food for vegans and on a nice quiet street in Brunswick.

Super friendly staff and amazing food. I love the Heuvos Mexicano dish. Plenty of room to dine indoors or at the cute outdoor dining area. Always busy with coffee orders.

Great vibe at this well located accessible cafe. The staff are attentive and obliging.Plenty of well priced delicious breakfast and lunch options. The barista made sensational coffees, I’ll be back for more.

One of my favourite local cafes. Yummy food and friendly service in a cute atmosphere. Their staff go above and beyond! On one occasion our coffee took a while to be made and they didn’t charge us for them (without us requesting this).

I had passed this cafe numerous times and when a friend and I decided to try something new in the area we came here. It was a cold day so sitting outside was not really an option. Unfortunately there were two very loud tables of people screaming with laughter and in a small space this made a quiet morning with a friend difficult. The coffee is nothing special and the toasted sandwiches we both had were very basic, ordinary and lacked imagination. This is not a place I will return to, from my experience there are much better options close by.

Sensational savories and killer carrot cake; sweet Evelyn catered for our party of 100 on Saturday with vegetarian and sausage rolls and a delicious carrot and walnut cake. It was well presented and on time and good value.

Ordered brunch burger today . Tomato sauce in burger and side dish was fizzy, classic sign that it has turned . I was unable to eat the meal . Told this to server , his reply was “ I’ve sold 100’s of these over the past week ! “ I’m baffled how this was , in anyway applicable to my issue , there and then . I’m not 1 to sit there and argue . So shrugged my shoulders and went back to the conversation with those I was dining with . In my 25 years experience in hospitality , working front and back of house , if the customer is unhappy , just fix it . This seemed not to be something this place was interested in doing . A shame as the coffee was good and the Decor was nice too . Was even more baffled when I went to pay for coffees and waters , that I was actually expected to pay for a meal , that I had said was inedible . His reply “ we all tried it and it was fine !” Again , baffled but really can’t be bothered arguing when people aren’t actually actively listening to the issue and just taking immediate offense and assuming they are right . Never have I expected a customer to pay for a meal , That they said they could not eat and no I had not just changed my mind ! Great example of what not to do when dealing with customers and will be able to use this when delivering to my hospitality students . Also signs to look for in spoiled food when delivering food safety certificates!

Sweet Evelyn is our favourite place for brunch!! Delicious selection of food and pastries, great coffee - their iced soy mocha is even made with with soy ice cream! Love the staff and best of all it's dog friendly- not just the front, but also their cozy back yard. Can't recommend this place enough

Finally got to eat here after wanting to for ages... wow... I was not disappointed. Our food was amazing and we will definitely be back soon

Best magics in West brunny! Plenty of dog parking and the place is outrageously chill

Typical Brunswick cafe. The place next door seems much busier... loved the chips for an extra $3. Meals were okay. Staff were friendly enough.

Sweet Evelyn is a hidden gem in Brunswick. Staff were very friendly and explained everything well (as we had a voucher).

The decor is very plain and a bit old style, so don't expect anything fancy, however the food definitely delivers.

I ordered the Smashed Pumpkin which was super tasty and had a huge serving of pumpkin which I loved. I do think the egg should of been included in the dish, not as an extra. However, it was poached perfectly.

My partner enjoyed his Mexican style breakfast as well. All the dishes on the menu are very well priced, so are great value. Sweet Evelyn is worth a visit if in the area.

Sweet Evelyn is a hidden gem in Brunswick! The staff were lovely and explained everything well (as I had a voucher).

The cafe itself is pretty plain so don't expect anything fancy, however the food definitely delivers. I ordered the Smashed Pumpkin which was so tasty and there was a huge amount of pumpkin which I loved. Also so often toast is a bit overdone for my liking but here it was toasted perfectly. The egg was cooked to perfection also, but I think the dish should come with this anyway and not be an extra.

My partner enjoyed his Mexican style breakfast too. Prices are low here which makes the meals great value. Sweet Evelyn is worth checking out if in the area!

I went here with a scoopon deal on a weekend and was very impressed with the food. The service was very good and they accommodated our request to replace some non-veg with more veggies. I tried out the “TomYum omelette” breakky since i haven’t seen that combination before and found it to be very nice. The spicy kick to a breakky in the morning and with a nice hot mocha was a great start to the morning. Highly recommend this place for its service, food and ambience.

We got a good scoopon deal to this place and I must say it is a worthy deal. The breaky menu had so much options. I ordered the smash avocado and got such a generous portion of it.
The prana chai was brewed fo perfection. My husband has the time yum omelette and mentioned that it had a unique spice punch to it.
The staff were so friendly and always coming to check on their customer with a smile.
Do ask for their tomato relish on the side.
Highly recommend this place for a good brunch.
Such a fantastic feast this morning and a great deal through a Scoopon voucher! $48 for 4 people to have a breakfast/lunch item and drink, winning! The service was lovely, a cute little cafe with great food and coffee, why not! Perfect start to the weekend 🙌😍👌

Pictured is the Smashed Pumpkin (organic smashed pumpkin, meredith goats cheese, pepitas, pine nuts, spinach, hummus, chilli and organic crispy kale served on organic multigrain sourdough) & Skim Latte

I love this sweet little cafe in Brunswick. Nestled amongst a small row of shops, the area has a village feel. The cafe itself is a decent size, and cutely decorated and it has a comfortable atmosphere. The staff are friendly and welcoming and encourage you to enjoy yourself.

There is a fairly decent food menu, but we actually like to come here for the pastries. The pistachio croissant in particular is flaky with a delicious pistachio frangipane filling. Everything is freshly made, and the cake displays are so tempting. Sweet Evelyn hits that sweet spot of great food and great service, and for this reason, is quite a popular cafe in this part of Brunswick.

Two words: amazing food! Everything was so tasty! The egg was organic and it was presented all so beautifully! The service was friendly and the coffee was made to perfection! Cute place for brunch!
Carla Barro
My food came out cold and when I sent it back, they clearly microwaved and sent back the same plate, with bites missing and the cornbread was soggy and steaming.
As well the batch brew was very strange didn't taste like coffee.

ready for the weekend?
🍓 acai bowl
🍳 chili scrambled eggs
🍄 walnut ricotta and roasted mushrooms
🏚: Sweet Evelyn
📍: Brunswick, Melbourne
.
————————————————————
.
📝: In need for a place to hide away from this rainy day? A stone’s throw from Melbourne’s CBD, you’ll find this warm, homey little cafe nestled in the residential heart of Brunswick.
.
❤️: The range of menu makes it hard to choose 🤤. But we opted with Chili Scrambled Eggs, an Acai Bowl for me, and a menu from the specials board, the Walnut Ricotta and Roasted Mushrooms.

Oven baked 🍄 mushrooms with toasted walnuts and garlic ricotta, drizzled in such aromatic truffle oil and served on 🍞 organic sourdough toast with 🍳two organic free range poached eggs.

Organic free range chilli scrambled eggs served on brioche with micro herbs, Meredith goats cheese🧀, oven baked mushrooms 🍄 and housemade chili sauce🌶. Not spicy, so it’s perfect for everyone, even for those chili intolerants out there!

Then onto my go-to-menu. Blended acai berry, blueberries, pomegranate, goji, nuts, chia seeds,
banana 🍌, topped with fresh fruits 🍓, shredded coconut 🥥 and house baked granola. It was a little too watery and would’ve been better if I could ask for some peanut butter though!
————————————————————
.
.
.

Avoid. Service terrible. Not worth it for the 90 wait. Go next door.

Food subpar. But the treatment of guests is the biggest issue. Not worth anyone’s time of day.

Sweet Evelyn is tucked away in a quieter part of Brunswick but is well worth a visit for their expansive menu full of fun and inventive dishes. They are also really good value with all dishes being a couple of dollars lower than similar cafes in the area.

We dined in the courtyard which was really roomy and pup friendly! We had the Soft Shell Crab Croissant ($16.50), Evelyn’s French Toast ($16.50) and Cauliflower, Mac and Cheese Croquette ($18).

My favourite was the soft shell crab which was incredible value at $16, it was so massive and I would easily expect it to be priced above $22. It was packed with fresh salad, Monterey Jack cheese and spicy mayo so was more like a croissant burger. Super filling!

Also loved the mac and cheese croquettes which came with an addictive mushroom purée, poached eggs and spicy mayo. Again a really filling and delicious dish.

My least favourite was the super pretty french toast which was thick cut brioche topped full of fruits, vanilla mascarpone, berry compote and maple syrup. All of the toppings were really delicious but the actual French Toast was quite eggy.

Overall would definitely return to Sweet Evelyn for their beautiful, massive and fantastic value dishes!

We went here for Brunch on a cold Sunday afternoon.
I had made a booking for seven people however when I arrived they seemed to have no knowledge of it whatsoever.
I ended up standing around whilst the server organised a table for us outside, it took about 5mins and outside was practically empty so I don't know what the hold up was.
Sat outside we weren't attended to other than our first round of coffees and meal orders.
The company I was with would normally order three rounds of coffee in a similar sitting. That did not happen so their lost.
All meals arrived staggered and one not at all.
After an hour and a half they did not realise a meal was not delivered with the excuses being - it's coming soon, and we gave it to someone else.
That's how much attention they paid to us outside.
The food however was quite nice if not on the small side especially for the price.
At the end we got 2 coffees and one meal taken off the bill on top of the one that did not arrive.
After this service we will never return.
We were invited to Sweet Evelyn for breakfast last weekend, and were so excited to try it!! Immediately upon arrival we were greeted by friendly staff, and shown to a table in the back courtyard (which we requested). I love how there is plenty of outdoor seating, both out front and in the courtyard! Plus there are heaters available and blankets! I ordered the chai latte and loved how it came out in a little jug with honey and a strainer etc. Plus it tasted delish and perfect for the cold day we were there! We then shared the Evelyn’s French Toast, the Apple Cinnamon Spice Oats, and the Cornbread and Chorizo. I could not fault the oats, I absolutely loved them. The perfect winter warmer dish!! I loved the cornbread and chorizo dish - it was so different to any other breakfast dish I’ve had. The abundance of salsa was a real highlight, as was the delicious big pieces of chorizo! The French Toast was a delightful little dessert to finish with - just the right amount of maple syrup and the mascarpone was a great accompaniment. We loved our experience and will definitely be back!

We were invited by Sweet Evelyn Cafe to dine as guests, and it turned out to be the perfect start to our weekend! They are a cute little cafe located in the hipster suburb of Brunswick. I loved the semi rustic feel of the cafe with the tin roof and huge planter boxes located just before you walk in. This feeling carried flowed through to the inside with the worn wooden floorboards, and vintage style lights. I never got the sense that they’re trying to be something they’re not, instead I got a strong message from them that says ‘this is what we are, and we welcome you’.
Olive Sundays
Brunch at Sweet Evelyn will have your palette travelling the globe whilst still enjoying your classic breakfast ingredients like eggs and toast. The café is located on Union street in Brunswick and as the name suggests they have some sweet treats up their sleeve that will draw you in. Cherry pie anyone?

This was a great, homey spot for a Saturday morning breakfast. The toasty was awesome and the chai was good too. It wasn’t particularly memorable per se, as the dishes were quite predictable. However, that being said, what is on the menu is done well.
Lil Miss Vegan
Cute, cosy cafe with friendly staff. I had the vegan option of the porridge and it was one of the best I’ve had. Delicious, full of fruits and flavour. Perfect!
Can’t wait to come back and try the other vegan options.

Sweet Evelyn Cafe is located on Union Street in Brunswick. It has a very relaxed feel with tables & heaters out the front & a spacious courtyard out the back. We visited on a freezing day so also appreciated the blankets available.

Sweet Evelyn are working towards 100% organic produce & are currently at about 90% which is very impressive especially for the health conscious.

We started with a big mug of latte & a hot chocolate & loved the generous size. We selected a few dishes to share although it was hard to pick as their menu is extensive, the staff were helpful in suggesting their favourites.

The Cornbread dish was delicious & full of flavour. It generally comes with chorizo but they were happy to switch it with bacon for me. The cornbread is baked in house & we loved the fresh avocado, corn & the spicy salsa.

The Cauliflower Mac n Cheese croquettes on the specials menu were heavenly, super rich & cheesy & we would have happily polished off a plate of just these. Absolutely scrumptious.

The Evelyn French toast was presented beautifully, so much attention to detail. The brioche French toast was served with vanilla mascarpone, berry compote & seasonal fruits. A gorgeous dish which tasted as good as it looked.

The staff at Sweet Evelyn were friendly & the service was really fast, especially impressive as they had a full house of happy diners. We really liked the focus on organic produce & in house baked treats, thanks so much for having us.

Blown away by the friendly service we received today at Sweet Evelyn. Our waitress was so helpful and happy, it was wonderful. We enjoyed the Soft Shell Crab Croissant and would say this is the best in Melbourne. The Evelyn French Toast was heaven, that cream with the berry coulis - oh la la! We also indulged in the special of the Mac n Cheese Croquettes with mushroom OMG heaven!!!!

Cute cafe tucked away in a quiet suburban area of Brunswick. The atmosphere was cosy and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. My friend and I came here for a late Saturday brunch and we were delighted by the menu, which offers classic brunch dishes with a touch of fusion, as well as lunch staples like burgers and toasties, not to mention an array of delicious pastries and sweets as well. I had the smashed pumpkin which was creamy in texture and full of flavour. My friend loved the soft shell crab croissant and his 75% dark chocolate drink. Would definitely recommend this place and would love to return again to try out some of the other items on the menu.

Was invited to this cafe located in Brunswick. At first glance, it might appear to be a small cafe, but they had an outdoor seating which was quite spacious. To begin with, we ordered chai latte and matcha latte. The chai latte was fragrant, and they also had a unique way of serving it. We had to pour the chai latte into a cup, to strain the chai tea leaves. The matcha latte wasn’t the best, the matcha flavour wasn’t strong enough. For the food, we ordered soft shell crab croissant and smashed pumpkin. The soft shell crab was too little for the croissant. Ended up eating the croissant by itself. The elements of the dish were quite tasty though. The sauce had a slight spiciness to it, adding a nice kick to the dish. We also added hash browns, which were okay, just average, we’d like it to be a bit more crispy though. It was our first time trying smashed pumpkin. The smashed pumpkin was delicious, too. The bread itself was flavourful. The pumpkin was a bit sweet and salty. They also added cheese inside, which made the dish even better. The hummus also made the dish even tastier. There were also little pumpkin seeds, which added a nice crunch when we ate it. Overall, it was a great experience. The ambience was cozy, it wasn’t too crowded like other cafes tend to be. They also had a wide selection of menu, with some interesting flavour, like tom yum omelette, too bad there were only the two of us.

This cafe is so cute !!!! love their wall art and backyard. their backyard is just perfect for summer days.

The cafe has varieties of menu from asian inspired, Mexican and more. We started off with some green smoothie and fresh juice. They were very refreshing.
Then we had huevos Mexicano, soft shell crab croissant and smashed pumpkin. Our favourite was the croissiant, so crunchy and it has perfect combination. Delicious!

Thanks for having us!

Had the most vibrant breakfast this morning at Sweet Evelyn!

We tried the GREEN SMOOTHIE and BERRY SMOOTHIE. So refreshing!

As for food, we tried the SMASHED PUMPKIN and the SMASHED AVO! Both dishes were SMASHING! Super fresh, tasty and healthy!!

Service was lovely and the courtyard is beautiful too 💚

Sweet Evelyn is a gorgeous little cafe just off the busy streets of Brunswick. It’s a local favourite and it’s always bustling with customers. We were so lucky to be invited to try their food, and everything was beyond exceptional!

The venue is cute and cosy, with a nice and home-y ambience. We sat in the outdoor courtyard, which is brightly lit and very cute - like a back yard! The menu is huge and we wanted to try everything, but in the end we decided to go for the Tom Yum Omelette (as recommended by the waitress), the Huevos Mexicana, and Evelyns French Toast. Every dish was delicious, and the presentation was just stunning!

The Tom Yum Omelette was sensational! I loved how fresh and flavourful it tasted, and the egg was cooked nicely. The Tom Yum dressing was delicious - slightly sweet and sour, and the colour of it was so vibrant!

We chose the Huevos Mexicana as it seemed very unique and a dish we’d never heard of before. It came with crispy potato gems, cheese, avo and salsa, black beans, fried egg, and chipotle mayo! The combination of flavours was amazing, especially with those potato gems which are so addictive! We also added the spicy chorizo which was delicious. A really stunning dish that exceeded all our expectations.

Dessert is always a must when brunching, and the French Toast did not disappoint! The brioche was thick and dense, topped with creamy vanilla mascarpone and seasonal fruits and berries on the side. The berry compote added a nice tartness and freshness to the overall dish. Really delicious, and not too heavy either!

The coffee is also really good too! I got an almond latte to start which was very warm and smooth. I also had a berry smoothie which tasted very light and refreshing, and not at all heavy.

All the staff members are incredibly nice and we were well taken care of the entire time. Overall, I really think it’s one of the gems of Brunswick, and I highly recommend checking them out!
Flying Forward
Quite an unassuming local cafe, but as you walk through, there is a beautiful courtyard out the back.

Interestingly, the menu has a bit of a Mexican theme with offerings like Huevos Rancheros (renamed Mexicano), Mexican Benedict, Cornbread, and Quesedillas. It's a good move from this micro bakery to differentiate themselves from the many cafes around Melbourne.

* Cornbread & Chorizo - The cornbread was buttery and dense with great flavour, however kind of crumbled and fell apart into granules when cut with a fork. The tomato and avocado salsa had a great zing from the chipotle and there was a generous amount of corn served up. I really enjoyed this dish.

* Superfood Brekky Greens w/ Smoked Salmon - A very fresh and light option when you're not in the mood for a full cafe breakfast. The addition of a luxurious poached egg and smoked salmon rounds out the dish perfectly.

* Fresh Orange Juice - indeed freshly juiced oranges, lightly sweet and pulpy. So good!

* Avocado Smooth - one of the specials, it was creamy, lightly sweet thick and filling! Loved it.

I visited at 1pm on a Sunday, so I missed the brunch rush, but I believe it gets pretty busy.
Thanks to the team for inviting me today. Keep up the good work!
Hello. Imnikki
If you're ever at Sweet Evelyn, I strongly suggest that you grab a table at the courtyard out the back. Spacious yet cosy, surrounded by flowers and greeneries, it's a most relaxing spot for a leisurely meal.

Now onto the menu! Decisions, decisions! By deciding to get a slice of that scrumptious cherry pie, I narrowed down my options to savouries. It worked out in the end as the smashed pumpkin that I ordered was amazing. The pine nuts and pepitas mixed into the smashed pumpkin gave it so much texture and bite, and so did the crispy kale. The hummus lent an earthy mellow flavour to the dish, balancing out the richness of the goat's cheese and the spicy kick from the fresh chillies. Throw in 2 slices of buttery sourdough and a perfectly poached egg, and you have yourself a masterpiece.

My partner pretty much ignored the rest of the menu once he laid eyes on the cornbread and chorizo. Can't blame him though, this dish had his name written all over it. A hearty dish that was bursting with fresh and piquant flavours from the spicy chipotle salsa and tomatoes. The avocado added a touch of creaminess, which was just what was needed to go with the punchy flavours of the chorizo. The moist and crumbly cornbread made this a very substantial dish, one that my partner almost had trouble finishing.

Pastries are also a forte of Sweet Evelyn, and the cherry pie and apricot danish were a testament of this. Washed down with an excellent cup of coffee, and the super thick and creamy avocado smoothie, our tummies were full and content.

Sweet Evelyn, you will always be my sweetheart! Thank you for inviting us in!

I'm sure if I came on a quieter day I would have had a better service experience than 11am on Saturday. My friend and I got our own menus, needed to wait a while for water & for our orders to be taken. Our coffee came out long before our food did, and I believe we waited around an hour from the time our order was taken to our food arriving at our table. I do understand they were very busy, but it was just a little bit long for my liking to wait for food and there was no communication until I asked that there would be a long wait for food. People around us that came after us, did get their food before we did. The servers were kind & doing their best for the situation they were in. The outdoor sitting area is so lovely, and I highly recommend sitting outside here if you can. The smashed pumpkin was so tasty, I think it’s almost better than smashed avo (unpopular opinion). The pumpkin was sweet & I loved the little pops of pine nuts/pepitas as I ate the dish. The goats cheese added a nice layer of creaminess. Topped with a perfectly poached egg too. I tried a bite of the cornbread & chorizo dish, which was tasty, but cornbread is a little dense for my liking. Our coffees were very nice.

I’ve had to change my opinion on Sweet Evelyn - they have changed hands. The food is still excellent, maybe even a touch better than before (the new chef is very good and generous). The ambience has changed! Not all the new owners are friendly. They have the right the change whatever they like - I can’t get past no batch coffee anymore or the pleasant attitude that disappeared with it. As a result, I’ve decided to explore greater Brunswick in search of my hearts desire; batch brew and filter pour over coffee. Peas out.

The food and ambience at Sweet Evelyn was amazing! I had the baked eggs and the sweet pumpkin smash and it *smashed* my expectations! ;) it’s tucked away in true Melbourne style, and I can’t recommend it highly enough!

I have had breakfast at Sweet Evelyn twice and found that the food here is great. And they also have great coffee and cakes. And the service is great as well.
Ryan
Good coffee is the corner stone to any brunch, and this coffee was a smooth fast onramp to the brunch highway. Solid 4 here, friendly service and breakfasts that punch above their weight in flavor and filling. Great relaxed atmosphere.
Madamcafebeing
This place ticks all the boxes. Great coffee, delicious home baked sweet and savory goods and great menu. Have tried many items - this Tom yum omelette packs a punch in flavor. Delicious 😋 friendly service always

A good breakfast is hard to find but thankfully Sweet Evelyn is the place to find it. We had the shakshuka baked eggs as well as the cornbread and roast vegetables. Both were excellent. The service was relaxed and friendly too.

Updated review - April 2019

Note: many of the recent 5* reviewer have been invited and have been given a review in exchange for a free meal

My unpaid review: Sweet Evelyn used to be a gem in West Brunswick but has moved to new management. The new people tried hard (probably too hard at the start) but we hoped that things would settle down.

It seems we are not on our own with the opinion because the place is often empty when it would normally be bustling. So what has gone wrong?

Two things.

The previous owners were passionate about the food and coffee. Now, the guy who opens up on a morning sees it as a job. After months he still struggles to get the basics right. Luckily they have Liz who holds the fort despite having to deal with someone who makes the job much harder than it should be.

The brand feels mixed up. The owners are doing what they like instead of thinking what the customers like.

In a matter of months they have managed to turn something great into, at best, very average.

Suggest focusing on the basics and getting them right... and look after Liz!!

(Was) Simply perfect!

The sign of a great place is when they can do the simple things really well .. consistently. Sweet Evelyn is such a place. I’ve tried most things on the menu over the years and it’s all delicious.

My favourite part of the week though is to sit down for a great cup of coffee and some toast in the knowledge that it will arrive as it should be .. perfectly toasted.

Lovely little cafe - very friendly staff, tasty food and quick service. The smashed pumpkin is amazing!! Coffee is great too. Our local fave!

The people here are always nice and they make you feel welcome. The coffee is pretty strong... exactly the way I like it. The food is amazing!

My initial review of Sweet Evelyn was a 5 star. I really enjoyed the food and the coffee, but now since Steve and his wife have sold it to new owners, the food is nowhere near as good, luckily the coffee quality is still high. Shame.
Emily
We love this place! The food is delicious, the staff really friendly and accommodating, and a great relaxed vibe. Definitely one of our faves!

Probably one of the best coffees I’ve had in Brunswick. Really well done with a depth of flavours and great extraction. Highly recommended for anyone looking for great coffee. Service was very quick and the owner was great to chat with as well. Lots of seating that’s comfortable and though a bit rustic, understandable for how long it’s been there. Still a very pleasant cafe to relax in with a great layout design.

This buzzing little ubarban cafe in the heart of Brunswick serves great coffee and many delicious breakfast and lunch items suitable to those of all dietary requirements. The serves are not big and only come with a thin slice of bread. Busy on a weekend so be prepared to wait loud inside. Worthy of a visit if you're in #Brunswick

Definitely one of my fav cafes in Melbourne. Very friendly staff! I keep going back and loving it each time. The seating area in the back is amazing on a sunny day and the interior is just as nice!

Sweet Evelyn is a small cafe in the cool and very hip Brunswick. The food was delicious and we now know why they are always busy. The staff are lovely and very chatty with the customers which we love. They also know their menu well and are able to take you through it an recommend the perfect dish for you. If you are in the Brunswick area definitely a place to check out!

Really bad. Absolutely NO idea how this place is getting good reviews. Breakfast experience was one of the worst, and we been eating breakfast out for years up years. We had (i) the Mexican and it was a poor attempt, they tried with aesthetics, but it was just fried potato tots from a bag and a few black beans added with little cubes of veg, sub standard, nothing Mexican authentic. We had (ii) the Thai breakfast. Agree it was risqué, but I've had these though Asia, ended up being an attempted fusion at a baked eggs Thai style, again way off the mark, ended up being a hard baked egg amongst spongy sausage, covered in bacon floss, granted I could salvage some bread and egg from it as a workaround. Never again.
Good staff and ambience etc, coffee was decent, but the breakfast menu, fail.
Pete Thunder
Really like this place, great to go to a place that has the courage to offer something different to the usual breakfast fare. Very cool staff, welcoming, attentive and personable. Good coffee and a non pretentious atmosphere rounds out a very positive experience. Will definitely return 😊

Away from the main shopping and cafe strip lies this local gem. Your taste buds can take a trip around the world with interesting options like Shashuka Baked Eggs, Huevos Mexicano and Thai Breakfast.

Be warned that watching someone else order the Thai Breakfast will cause food envy when it arrives and smells that good. Because it wasn't mine, its flavours were extra awesome when I had a taste. However the housemade Cornbread and Roasted Veggies was so tasty and filling, I was soon fully occupied with combining the different textures into each mouthful.

Speedy service in a simple, functional space. This spot is great for the weekend brunch. Try resisting temptation from the house made pastries and donuts as you leave. This place serves Mork hot chocolate - another big plus in my book.
Good Food Good Mood
Sweet was right. I ordered the mango and saffron pana cotta as I saw on instagram it had just landed on the menu and I figured I better get my fill of the breakfast pana before it’s no longer in vogue. It didn’t really look like the photos I’d seen, there was definitely no visual vibrancy from the saffron and nor could I taste the mango. It presented quite a pale white which I found overly sweet but just manageable when mixed all together. It was technically well executed and had a decent wobble. I asked our waitress what brand the turmeric latte mix was as there’s a couple on the market I don’t care for. I was surprised when she came back with a house made blend and it was pretty well done in my opinion.
We also had a smashed avocado and a couple of chilli scrambled eggs at the table. Everyone raved about the mushroom with the chilli scramble (I’m not a mushy fan so I didn’t try) and commented that the chilli was just the perfect amount. A seriously good looking cake cabinet tempted a few of us on the way out. Ample street parking, no lines and they split bills. Easy like a Saturday morning.

coffee is average, but good service. Overboiled spinach but meet my requirement of no adding oil. Poached eggs are good! Big serve of avocado but only comes with few feta

Came here for brunch today and were met with friendly staff and a bustling atmosphere in a quiet little spot in Brunswick.

I really liked the menu. A balance between the latest food trends and classic brunch dishes- at VERY reasonable prices.
I really enjoyed the smashed pumpkin- the toast wasn't hard as a rock and easy to cut and the ratio of toppings to bread was perfect. It did initially come with an egg, which I didn't order (it was extra) but they happily fixed it up for me.
The brunch burger was also very much enjoyed. Not too big so you have to mentally process how to eat it but certainly not shy on fillings either.
The coffee was really good too which is impressive given how busy the baristas seemed to be the whole morning. So often on a Sunday morning, cafes can very easily let the coffee standard slip when there are several orders on the go. So that was a very big plus.

We did have to wait almost 30 minutes for our food but on a splendid Sunday at midday with a bustling cafe inside and outside (front and back) this could be forgiven.

Will definitely return again as there was more than one dish on the menu that caught my eye, making my brunch decision this morning, very tricky.

Really cute place for brunch or lunch. There's a good selection of baked goods inside, plus a few tables inside. There's a nice patio outside as well. The food was great! I had Shakshuka Baked Eggs ($17.5) which was a bit pricey but worth it! Delicious! My friend got a tasty acai bowl and green smoothie. I would definitely come back here. Good service, too.

Great food and coffee. The chilli eggs and French toast are particularly great. The staff are really helpful and lovely. Favourite place in Brunswick area.

Great setting. The toasties were really good. The food came out quickly with friendly service. The acai bowl was good but the best by far was the French toast. Light and fluffy. Refreshing after some poor French toasts I've had in the past 👍 TheyCallHimX Betty Joy

Absolutely charming cafe on a quiet street in brunswick! I was on a donut adventure day with a friend and this was one of my fav places that we went to.
I ordered the cinnamon donut and a salted caramel donut hole and a mocha! The staff were so friendly! We sat outside and there were heaters and also little blankets provided! I love the little touches.
The food was yum! And the coffee was great, and had nice coffee art :)
And i found out that Sweet Evelyn was named after the owners daughtee, whose name is Evelyn! I really like that :)
Id love to come back here for brunch one day! It already became one of my favourite places, just from this first visit! :)
Great coffee, great food with a wicked variety of choices. Super friendly vibes from all the staff, always! Just a top place that you have to get yourselves to really. (They even sell biscuits for your pups...!!!)

Really delicious food and good friendly service. I had the cornbread with egg and roasted veggies, my partner had the smoked salmon Benedict. Plus we both had the hot chocolate. Will be back.

The best chai latte you'll ever drink!! ♥️ This is my favourite local brunch spot on a Sunday morning, we are always greeted with a warm welcome from the staff. They have good quality food, GREAT coffee and a really cute court yard. A good range of options available on the menu, plus a few specials! It is well reasonably priced, I always leave satisfied and happy. The donuts are also yummy, I will try the croissants next time 😝

Came here on a Sunday for breakfast and waited nearly 2 hours for food. Food was well presented when it did finally arrive. The staff were also really friendly but clearly under the pump. Over all an ok experience.

Good quick service, coffee came in 2 min and food came in just in time. Eggs benny was nice but I'd swap the salmon for bacon in there. The muffin was not dry, just crispy enough (unlike in other places that serve dry breadcrumb) and the sauce was good - did not have this overly sour taste to it.

Lovely little cafe with attentive and mostly cheerful staff. We had the chilli scrambled eggs and smashed pumpkin. The food was pretty good and coffees too.

The food was good and we will definitely make a return visit. The coffee was also pretty good. Service was a bit slow and the food took ages to come so it was a good thing we weren't in a rush.

Fantastic food. Love the qusedilla here. Staff are super friendly. my favorite in Brunswick. Having brunch here every weekend despite so many selections out there in the area

I drive 10 minutes from Coburg just to pick up a few of their delicious mini brioche donuts (custard, although the chocolate is obviously not going to disappoint either). Truly delicious, light and just the right amount of sweet. Yum! The service is always friendly and attentive, food from their menu is great too, although nothing could possibly top those donuts!!

You know you're onto something good when you walk in and don't even have to say anything before you sit down, they just start making your coffee. They make the effort to get to know their regulars and are welcoming and friendly to newcomers. The menu is varied enough to cater for all tastes and you can always rely on the specials for something interesting when you want to try something new. The food and the coffee is consistently good, which is what keeps me coming back.

OMG tired of lazy inner city cafes with the same breakfast? Looking for something creative, filling and tasty? Looking to be greeted when you walk in the door? If the answer is yes, yes and yes drop into Sweet Evelyn. So much looked good. I had the pulled pork burger, which was the best burger I have had in 2016 and possibly this decade. Finished off with yummy 5 Senses coffee. Top shelf!

Have been here multiple times now, and keep coming back because there are so many dishes I want to try. The menu offers something different from standard breakfast dishes, but still has some variations of old favourites. Servings are generously sized and priced. Staff are really friendly and even when you think the place is full, there always seems to be a table available.

Favourite dish so far has been the smashed pumpkin, which I got with the egg and side bacon. Delicious!
Queen Of Food
Great selection for breakfast and definitely worth a visit! I had the fritters and they were flavoursome and moist. One of my friends had the hot cakes and they were picture perfect! Service is attentive and friendly. Look forward to returning.

I love this place. So much. The staff are always friendly and accommodating, the food is outstanding, and the place itself is perfect - not too small or too big, not too noisy or too quiet. The coffee is consistently great, the food selection varies from little nibbles to bigger meals, and I cannot praise how wonderful the staff are. Every time I'm here I'm blown away by how friendly they are.

If I was a meaner person I'd give it fewer stars so less people would come here and I'd then have it all to myself!
Andrew
I love this place. Service, food & coffee is absolutely brilliant. Funky and friendly place. 10/10.💪 Next time in Brunswick stop by and give it a go.

Great experience from the moment we stepped inside. Staff were friendly and served us quickly.

They were also real chilled about making alterations to the menu.

Food was delicious and coffee went down well. Can't really fault this place.

Gotta come back during my fatday to try out all the awesome sweets on their menu!

Consistently super friendly staff and lovely food. Almost always busy when I go but the service is fast. Shakshuka eggs are a fave and the pastries are delicious too.

Incredible food and coffee, backyard option with great service. Absolutely coming back to try all the other avocado dishes. We tried the specials and they were insanely satisfying and tasty.

Sweet Evelyn is a comforting homestyle cafe that serves familiar, filling cheap meals and good coffee in a classic, cosy relaxing environment. Entering this lovely cafe on a late chilly Sunday afternoon a friend and I where greeted by a kind waitress who seated us next to the door along the wall on of the cafe. The interior is rather small only seating up to a maximum of 25 people yet there is a courtyard situated out the back that would be a perfect spot to relax in and enjoy the sun on a warmer day.

After glancing at Sweet Evelyn’s simplistic yet diverse menu and attempting to distract ourselves from staring at the gorgeous assortment of macaroons, pastries and other indulgent treats on offer behind the counter we decided to firstly order our hot beverage of choice being a long black and a Prana Chai tea.
Our drinks arrived and I was firstly given a long mac, but when I questioned it was the staff where extremely apologetic and promptly delivered me a steaming hot well brewed dark coffee certainly making up for the firstly mistaken order. The spicy aromas of the tea was very satisfying and everything a good classic chai should be.

After determining what our tastebuds where seeking I opted to order the special that was on offer and was told that it has been very popular being the Apple cinnamon spiced porridge.
The huge heart warming bowl of goodness was shortly placed in front of me with steam escaping from the gorgeously present dish. The Apple cinnamon spiced porridge served with house made berry compote, poached pear, seasonal fruit and toasted hazelnuts made dairy free on request with almond milk was utterly sensational. The dish looked immaculate with a delicately cooked fanned pear in the centre of the dish accompanied by fresh strawberries, raspberries and blueberries scattered on the outside. The crunchy aspect of the hazelnut crumble paired well with the perfectly cooked creamy chewy oats. The strong cinnamon flavours and acidic fresh burst of fruit ensured the dish was not too sweet making for a very filling bowl of goodness. The addition of the fruit compote that was folded throughout the oats ensured this dish was a true flavour explosion.

Sweet Evelyn is a great little cafe perfect for old family catch ups and when your in need for some good old classic comfort food. The friendly enthusiastic staff create a relaxing environment, and the large servings of food at great prices is destine to leave one with a full tummy and placing Sweet Evelyn on the list of cafes to return to.

Gluten free cornbread was out of this world, and my almond mocha might as well have been dark chocolate Nutella - sweet and incredible! I will be back!

Delicious food, friendly staff. Everything is done with care and the coffee is the best in Brunswick! Great specials like the poached pear porridge. Yummy!

Healthy lunch today, "super food breaky greens" Great little cafe with all day breakfast menu and variety of other lunch options on the menu. Great staff too.
Breaky had: Kale, Avo, Greens, Radish & Quinoa with nuts, seeds & fire range poached eggs add pulled pork.
Kein
Cosy and conveniently located near heaps of parking space. Had the traditional Thai breakfast, something you don't usually find the typical Aussie cafe. I'd say it's closer to fusion: pork floss with a fried egg, sandwiches on the side and stir fried minced pork. Flavour could be stronger, was expecting a greater mix. Great service, will be back definitely.

Owner is the barista and his wife the baker and they churn out remarkable quality cakes and great coffee. Happy to do substitutions or custom made jobs and they are friendly and welcoming which makes for a great atmosphere. Lovely courtyard out back too which is nice and this is definitely one of the best places for brunch/breakfast in Brunswick!
Cafe Addiction
This awesome cafe has truly earned its success and positive reviews. I remember when it first opened and focused on cupcakes, macaroons and other baked goods. It was a bold choice opening up next to Brunswick institution Miss Marmalade which on weekends had up to a 30 minute wait for a table. In the first year Sweet Evelyn's was rarely full and often was the recipient of Miss Marmalade's overflow.

The food has always been tasty but think it took a while for owners Steve and his lovely wife/chef to focus on their food menu instead of sweets but the payoff is the best cafe in Brunswick with imaginative delicious food, reasonable prices and great service led by the outgoing and cheerful Steve. Now Miss Marmalade struggles to get even half full as Evelyn's is the winner in this side by side cafe battle. Sweet revenge!
Only constructive criticism I'd offer is to rethink the dining area. Majority of stool and chairs aren't comfortable and if you're tall your legs can't fit under the table. I've heard a few customers comment on this. Luckily, this is easily fixed.

Me & my husband Absolutely love this cafe! Service is always friendly, coffee is great & the food is delicious. Definitely my 'go to' cafe in Brunswick!

A really positive first experience here. Service was friendly and food was very yummy. Coffee was good, and there was also great music - relaxing but not too loud.

Best cafe in Brunswick! Great gluten free options. Super friendly welcoming staff. Homey feel, away from the hectic Sydney road rush.
Lovely outdoor area
Best avocado smash on gf bread

Nice cafe right next door to Lady Marmalade on Union Rd Brunswick. Shakshuka was amongst the best I've had and the chai was also good. Friends ate the pumpkin smash and a vegetarian salad, both said they were great.

This review is for their cakes. We ordered the Lemon Meringue Sponge cake and a dozen mixed cupcakes.

The Lemon Meringue cake was delicious. Tangy, not too sweet and beautifully presented. The layers of sponge were a perfect balance to the lemon curd.

Unfortunately the cupcakes were not as nice. Although beautifully decorated, we all thought there was way too much icing. The smell of the mint iced cupcake seemed to permeate through all the other cupcakes.

I would like to add, however, that the ordering process was flawless. I ordered over the phone and the staff member was helpful and friendly. Pick up was also straightforward.

We look forward to trying their other cakes, or even the lemon meringue one again.

Group of 9 had brunch last week & we loved it! Great coffee (I'm a barista myself), the food was so fresh & tasty & the sweets were amazing!!! All baked on the premises we shared macaroons, almond croissants & brioche donuts- OMG- divine!! Owner asked what the occasion was ( 2 family members birthday) staff bought 2 cupcakes with candles to our table. Great service & amazing food- can't wait to return!

The food here is amazing! Such a fantastic menu and the coffee here is undoubtably the best in Brunswick. Highly recommend coming here for Breakfast and don't forget to grab a pastry on your way out!! Yummy!

This is another of Brunswick's outstanding cafes, with great coffee and sinfully good cakes /pastries( I believe baked on the premises) all served by truly lovely friendly staff..

Friendly staff, home made brioche. Just about arm in arm with Miss Marmalade next door.
Only had their brioche French toast this time, which was pretty good.
Eggs benedict looked good.

I think that the coffee here is just mediocre, but I liked the sweets I tried including the cupcakes. I prefer to go to Miss Marmalade next door for a takeaway coffee, but wouldn't rule this out!
Bexchum
Great coffee, good food, and hands down the best almond croissant I've ever had. The atmosphere is friendly, and the free wi-fi and coffee stamp card (which they handily keep on file for you) are added bonuses. Definitely a Brunswick gem

Toasties are topnotch here. Food is always satisfying and well priced. The owner is super nice and down to earth. Would recommend to everyone!

Another cafe serving sour Small Batch. Why do places insist on trying to be something they are not.
