Review Kao Thai - Brunswick

David N
Food: pretty good, tasty, cooked well and comes out quickly. Portions could be a bit bigger though. Service/Venue: staff are attentive and always around for any questions etc. they don’t make you wait too long to take your order Venue is small, but cute. No complaints. Heaps of parking around also. Would recommend checking this place out :) good

Off to dinner for something a bit light and popped into Kao Thai Restaurant on Sydney Rd and chose seewe - stir fried flat rice noodle dish with chicken, egg and capsicum which absolutely hit the spot. Served piping hot, the noodles are so tender and flavoursome, an excellent meal washed down with a refreshing glass of coconut juice. For dessert the roti with chocolate sauce and coconut ice cream took my fancy and it was a pretty good finish to my meal. I like the coconut ice cream which is refreshing, the roti is soft and flaky but a little crunchy and enjoyed with the chocolate sauce and melted ice cream. #ThaiFood #seewe #chicken #ricenoodle #coconutjuice #roti #coconuticecream #icecream #sweettooth #dessert #foodie #melbournefood @zomatomelb #sydneyrdbrunswick

Google brought me here and it didn’t disappoint. Excellent food, very taste and well portioned. The service provided was also excellent, always with a smile. 100% recommended.

One of my fav go to places for Thai food on a Friday/Sat night dinner. It's priced reasonably and has quality. I personally enjoy their Pineapple Fried Rice!

Always a pleasure coming here. Tom Yum Soup (vegetable), Chicken Roll, Pad See Ew with Chicken and Penang Curry ☺️

Despite walking in close to closing time, the staff were friendly and courteous. Everything was made vegetarian without any fuss. The food was fresh and very tasty, with servings more than enough to satisfy one's appetite. There is plenty of seating out the back which is well ventilated, which is good to keep in mind at the moment.

Really authentic food and a great atmosphere. Bustling and postive staff who went the extra mile to make sure they got everything right. House wine was reasonably priced and excellent. Food wasn't under-portioned at all. It arrived really fast and was a good hearty size, leaving us full without the need for an entree. Thai milk tea was fresh and cold. Perfect experience here.

Just dropped in for lunch and was very impressed with how genuine the flavors were...It was as if I was eating at a market restaurant in Thailand. I had the grapow gai with the egg on top (Kia dow) and it was amazing - spicy, basil, salty, chili and the lime. Yum yum. I’m definitely heading back soon to try more of the menu.
StepiiGM
Been missing the taste of pad see ew and this place definitely delivered! Just the right amount of sweet and spicy with loads of vegetables. The crispy pork also had the right flavor. However, it was hard to eat as the meat was tough.

Cheap, quick, and amazing food. True value for money. I love the pad Thai they serve, amazing taste and portion size. Do try, it is on of the best Thai restaurants in Brunswick.

I honestly didn’t feel like it was real Thai food. It was almost like a Thai menu minus the Thai flavours. The curry lacked not only ingredients but also that hit of flavour. The only vegetables we saw were green beans and capsicum (IN LITERALLY EVERY DISH WE ORDERED) We ordered the pineapple fried rice but there was barely any pineapple so it lacked the sweet and tangy flavour. My milk tea was awful and it had a really bad after taste. Sorry but really missed the mark for me

We specifically asked for a non-spicy salad however was served one that was unquestionably spicy (with very visible pieces of chilli). When this was brought to the staff member's attention, she berated us for not being clear enough with our request. Below average customer service, taste and portion sizes were average.

Very fresh produce, good amount and selection of veggies and meat in the dishes, but the satay stir fry and massaman were way too sweet. Front of house also lacked atmosphere. Staff were nice though, with good service.
Yum just yum! We walked past here on a Saturday night unsure of what was around and decided to give it a try. We were really happy with the fast service. House reds were only $6. We ordered vegetarian spring rolls, tofu with peanut sauce, roti with peanut sauce for the entrees, sizzling beef and massaman curry for mains and we were really pleased with all of them. The peanut sauce for the roti was thick and delicious and the curry was beautiful. Highly recommend :-)!

We were drawn to this restaurant from seeing all the high ratings on Zomato, only to be disappointed with our dining experience.

Having ordered their red curry on rice- it was decent but not authentic and it would’ve been a better dish had they served more sauce. Love their coconut rice which was fluffy and fragrant. The guay taew was disappointing. The chilli sauce was tangy, had no spiciness to it and just wouldn’t recommend this dish.

The restaurant is small and doesn’t provide much space between each tables. I do like that they have an outdoor dining area to accomodate more customers and also looked more lively compared to the interior of the restaurant. We’ll give this one a miss.

I had been here before but many moons ago, recently a friend and I decided to go for a visit.

The restaurant was very quiet initially but this soon picked up which was a good indication of what was to come.

Staff were friendly, good menu and the food fantastic. We shared the curry puffs, beef salad and chicken green curry. The stand out was the beef salad - WOW!! The sweet and sour dressing along with the fragrant herbs and hint of chilli, just scrumptious. The beef was ever so tender, I would go as far to say prob one of the best I have had.

Definitely a must visit if you're in the area and feel like some Thai.

Polite customer service.
Delicious foods.
Ordered a Coconut rice, Chicken and Cashews and Satay sauce beef!!
100% recommended.
Definitely big portions

This is definitely my go-to when I'm feeling like Thai! Their wok-tossed dishes are tasty, packed with plenty of perfectly cooked veges and meat (not oily or greasy at all). My partner gets Pad Thai every time, and we usually order their Tom Kha soup which is probably the most delicious soup I've had in my life. Their flavours are ON POINT with this one. We usually order takeaway but there is plenty of seating and the staff are friendly. The only setback is I do think they could bring the prices down a little, only because it's Brunswick which has a lot of other affordable places to eat nearby.

We'd been coming here since it first opened over 4 years ago. The servings were generous, staff friendly, ingredients tasty, meals came out super quickly, and everything was reasonably priced. Unfortunately as time went on the servings got smaller, the staff unfriendlier, ingredients blander, meals come out super slowly, and everything is overpriced. Very disappointing. Won't be coming back.
Chickpea
Decent Thai food, fairly authentic. Service is really good. All the curries are flavourful with a good amount of spice :) make a booking for Friday or Saturday as its small and gets pretty busy

Ordered through Uber Eats. Stir fry pork belly was pretty low on meat, beef and black bean was decent. Coconut rice pretty good. Roti was cold. But what was with the microscopic portion of peanut sauce that came with the Roti? For $50 I felt pretty let down with the generosity of the good stuff in the portions and given it was a delivery albeit not from very far away, the food could definitely have been warmer.

Ordered prawn meal paid $17+ for 5 small shrimp and a plate full of veggies let hungry and ripped off. 6 prawns is ALWAYS the minimum and KING prawns are ALWAYS expected !!!!
Jeremy K
Went here for the first time and ordered the chicken green curry, extra extra extra spicy.

Hottest green curry I've had in Melbourne. Completely delicious. I temporarily lost hearing in one ear and had the heat sweats all night. Five stars for self-inflicted pain, will definitely come back. This place is legit!
Aashima Thukral
Cozy cafe feeling. ordered green and red chicken curry with rice. Food is pretty decent but the portion sizes are small for the price charged.

Awful service from the waitress and owner (John).

My partner and I were the second couple to arrive today. We ordered within the first 10 minutes and received our food 50 minutes later.
From the confused look on several of the staff members, I could only assume the order didn’t go through. No apology or any form of acknowledgment. They simply didn’t care.

The portions are quite small and over priced.
Would not recommend.
Foodie Is Here
Cozy place to hang out. The food is out of my expectations, especially bbq chicken. It’s so YUM! But the time of waiting is a bit long for hungry girl.

Tried this based on the 4.2 Zomato rating. Sat down and had a little heart flutter because the menu had a few Malaysian crossover dishes and I’m always worried about eateries that try to cover too many bases. We ordered the fish cakes and whilst they were tiny, had the perfect texture and flavour like you’d expect in Thailand. The chicken rolls wrapped in roti and drizzled with satay sauce were also delicious although a tad overpriced at $14 for two. For mains we ordered the green chicken curry and crab fried rice. The curry dish was quite small and I had another little heart flutter when I thought perhaps we haven’t ordered enough. But it was damn tasty and very satisfying! There wasn’t a huge amount of crab in the fried rice but they went perfectly together. This was a really good meal and we were thoroughly happy!

It's hard to find a stand out thai restaurant. Kao thai definitely makes the cut. Great vibe, delicious food and friendly staff. Highly recommend this place.
Lady Masticator
Take away order: paid $16 for a small 500ml tub of mee goreng that I couldn’t even eat. It was about 50% liquid, tomatoes and cucumbers were drenched, found 2 piddly pieces of tofu. It was not only unpalatable - it was totally inedible.
Chicken roti entree - chicken was tough and over cooked. Again, $13 is overpriced for the size and quality of that.
Do not recommend this restaurant

I was looking for a Thai restaurant closer to home, Kao Thai is absolutely as delicious as other reviews suggest.

I ordered take away Chicken Cashew nut stir fry with a side of coconut rice! Best I've tasted in the area.

I agree with other reviewers that the stir fry servings are small for the price. Cannot be shared between two people.
Other than that, look no further, this place is amazing!
HotChipy
I don't know why this place has such a high rating. I was very disappointed with the satay tofu stir fry, I've definitely had far better Thai before.
Joe M. Khoury
The place is nice for a a group of friends to have lunch or dinner, could get a bit loud when crowded, however the food is really good and it's wroth it.

Come here all the time and have never had a bad meal. Delicious curries and pork dishes. Friendly staff. So excited to see they now deliver!
Eric Koh
Fast service, tasty food, a no fuss and affordable meal.

We had the beef soup, signature crispy pork and green curry calamari. Beef soup and crispy pork were standouts, certainly goes well with steamed Jasmine rice.

Would love to visit again in summer, they have a nice courtyard which can cater for a small group.

My friend and I came here for takeaway and ordered the lunch special. We ordered the beef pad Thai with the tom yum soup and the basil stir fry with the minced chicken. I was quite excited to try this place out since I saw that it had a great rating on Zomato. I thought the decor was nice but the waiter seemed a bit quiet? Maybe it's just the culture. I also found the food to come out quite slow whereas other people who ordered after us has received theirs first 🤔 moreover, when we brought the food home I was excited to try the pad Thai because that's a staple dish in Thailand. However, I was quite disappointed. It wasn't as flavourful as I have tried from back home and it was a bit too bland for my liking. The tom yum soup was also a bit too sweet for me. But the basil stir fry was quite delicious, probably one of the better ones that I've tried. I would definitely recommend this place but not to try the pad Thai. I'm looking forward to come back and try the other dishes (:

We had the back room for my boyfriends birthday, the staff were so lovely and accomodating! Everyone really enjoyed their food too. Was great to see so many vegetarian options!

We love Kao Thai - the food is always good and the staff is very friendly. We've tried most of the local Thai and this is the one we definitely prefer.

My how looks can be deceiving. I didn't really think much of this place as I walked in. A lone guy behind the counter, no music and only 2 other people in the restaurant. Boy was I impressed as I left. The service was excellent. It was very affordable and probably the best chicken cashew I've had in north Melbourne. My wife and I had pad Thai chicken and chicken cashew. Both were excellent. It didn't take long before the place filled up and the ambience improved a whole lot. Even with the 1 lone server running around service was top notch. It's certainly not 5 star dining but it's good quality, honest fresh food. Worth a go!!
Mike C
Seriously good thai, I have enjoyed everything I have ordered here, they do really nice fried wok dishes over their curries and I love the prawn stir fry with peppercorns and spices,

Delicious well priced thai that I recommend if you haven't tried it yet .

This place is our favourite go to Thai restaurant. Amazing food quality and taste, service is impeccable and good value for money. Give Kao Thai a go you won't be dissapointed.
Must Be Hungry
There is an abundance of great Thai restaurants in Melbourne, and this is definitely one of them. We ordered the Chicken Cashew Nut with a side of Satay Skewers. It's hard to go wrong with a Cashew Nut dish and they didn't disappoint. The Skewers were okay, will probably try a different appetiser next time I'm in. Friendly service and warm venue, worth a visit!

This place used to be one of my favourite places to eat in Brunswick. Good servings, generous use of ingredients and really reasonably priced. Unfortunately in recent months I have noticed things have been really scaled back which is so disappointing. Called in to get a takeaway last night to give it one more try but it was no better. Small servings, very limited use of ingredients and bland. Rather than trying to keep prices low I would rather pay a few dollars more and get something worth paying for. Sorry won't be back - such a shame. :(

Very tasty food! I've only ever had take away several times but it's always been delicious! That's all I really have to say but I have to fill a minimum 140 character quota so there you go, hope you enjoyed the filler.
KatMmm
Fast service, and an even faster kitchen, especially on a busy Saturday night. Good, authentic Thai, for a reasonable price. Highly recommended.
Our Foodie Finds
Its the subtle little accents that add to the experience like the small half size metal gate at the front door, the wooden decor, faux root vegetables and grains hanging from the walls. All of which made it a very Thai-like moment but as far as the overall experience went, the food could've done with some small accents to make it just as great. Dont get us wrong, the food wasn't horrible, it wasn't that it was brought out late in fact it was really quick, it wasn't even that the waitress' were unpleasant but were actually very attentive and welcoming in that warm Thai way, it was that the fact that it just lacked love. The staple Thai dish which we had ordered and happened to come out first is beef pad thai $14.9. Tasted quite bland and under seasoned which was surprisingly disappointing. Having cooked and eaten this dish in Thailand ourselves - we expected it to be much more than what we ate especially with the rating of this place.

Albeit that the staple dish was a let down, we also ordered the pineapple fried rice with chicken $14.9 and the red duck curry $16.9 which were delicious and flavoursome with the fried rice had just the right amount of curry powder complimenting the sweetness of the pineapple. The duck was juicy and moist in the red curry which coupled with the fried rice was a nice match although we much rather have had the coconut rice as a preference.

Prompt and friendly was service provided by our Thai waitresses although we did find it odd that after taking our plates away that there was no offer of any further to eat like dessert, tea or coffee? We would've liked to try it out but decided that we would just leave and get something sweet some where else. A let down? A little 😑 Till next time, this is Our Foodie Find!

Came here like 15mins earlier than when it was meant ro reopen for dinner. When me and my friend arrived at the door we thought it was open, but then I realised that it was the whole team of staff eating before reopening again! The sign even said open and one of the staff walked towards. Embarassed, me and my friend were about to walk off but the friendly staff said they're not open till 5pm but we could go sit inside and wait! How nice!

Looking at the menu, they had pretty interesting things to me, as I haven't eaten at a Thai restaurant in years! I ordered Thai milk tea and also pad thai with chicken. The Thai milk tea was really sweet, was expecting it to taste more like milk but I didn't mind as it was really cheap! The pad thai was also at a good price, it came out looking better then I expected! The ingredients on top were really fresh! When this dish was placed in front of me it smelt weird, but taste wise - it was heaven! It had a combo of sweetness and saltiness which tasted very good! Would definetly eat this again!

It was only at the end of eating that we realised there were more tables outside at the back. It looked amazing and had a tumblr kinda feel and regretted not sitting out there! But next time I will ☺

Super cute courtyard out the back and super fast service. We had the Gapoa Moo Krob, a stir fried crispy pork dish with Thai basil. The basil was delicious, and the aniseed strong, which I really liked. The crispy pork was perhaps a little sweet and tough. Loved the Thai milk tea. The massaman had some good flavours although I was surprised it was beef strips instead of chunks. The wok fried basil dish was a fresh contrast to the sweeter curry dish. And the Jasmine rice was fluffy perfection.

As scored more than 4 in Zomato, I expected Kao Thai to be much better than this. Personally I prefer Green field located across the road much more. The fish was overcooked a lot, which made it quite chewy. The Tom Yum soup tasted pretty OK, but the portion was surprisingly small based on its price. The fried rice was the yummiest one. However, it tasted more like a Chinese dish, instead of a Thai fried rice.

Really glad I tried this place because I'll definitely be coming back here for lunch, dinner and the old go-to Thai takeaway. There were so many things on the menu to choose from that you certainly couldn't tick this place off the list after just one visit.

The meal I had was really good. Tom yum soup was excellent- the mark of a good Thai place really- and the curry I had was also very tasty. All in all, nice flavours and a good amount of spice so certainly no complaints.

Although you can find some very cheap places on Sydney rd and around for your rice/noodle/curry fix, this place offers good quality food for not too much of a jump in price so definitely worth a try !

EDIT: this place is fast becoming our got to for a solution to the 'don't want to cook but need to eat' situation. We've gotten take away from here a few times and had the keemao with vegetables and tofu and it was the perfect take away meal honestly. Spicy and delicious everything you could want when you're avoiding cooking yourself !

Came here for a quick sit down dinner and while my partner didn't stray from the chicken pad Thai which he claims is the best one ever, I stepped outside the box to try one of their fried rice combos. Now hear me out, fried rice made with green curry paste loaded with all the vegetables you'd normally get in your curry coupled with the fried goodness we all love about fried rice. It was perfect. Didn't know it when I ordered but after the first mouthful I knew it was exactly what I wanted. Do not hesitate to try!
The Beard Eats
Came here tonight to pick up some take away. Curry puffs as an entree, which were great with their peanut dipping sauce. For main the Massaman curry, which was tasty and had quite a bit of potato. As the previous reviewer said, it was thinly sliced beef and not chunks - a little disappointing but very tender. Also got the BBQ chicken with chilli sauce which was fantastic. Would recommend.
Timinmelbourne
I went here tonight based on the 4.2 Zomato rating to meet some friends here for dinner.

I ordered some roti bread and a massaman beef curry and I specifically asked the waitress if the beef was thick beef chunks or sliced beef. The waitress told me that it was beef chunks so I believed her as massaman should be slow cooked beef chunks but that may have been lost in translation?

The roti bread was a small serving and very average, and the massaman beef was thin dry strips of beef as tough as a car tyre! Inedible chewy pieces of rubber.

My friend ordered the duck curry which was liquid with duck slices that looked like processed meat. The curry sauce was watered down and my friend couldn't finish the curry.

My other friends had a Pad Thai and a fried rice dish which they said they enjoyed which is why I give this place a rating of 2.

For the service my friends got their Pad Thai and rice dish freshly cooked within minutes. Oddly enough we were served our entree roti bread at the same time.

After we finished the roti bread my massaman arrived and then about 10 minutes later my friends duck curry arrived after we asked if the dish was still coming.

This food for me overall was cheap and definitely not worth the drive. I'd recommend that you go elsewhere if you want good or even reasonable Thai.

Your choice...

Ended up here by chance after a booking mistake from a different Chinese restaurant across the road, staff welcomed group of 6 of us with no booking required on a Friday night which was lucky!

Meals came out for all other guests, with only 1 mistake of adding chilli after we specified no chilli on one of the dishes, my meal BBQ Chicken did not arrive until 25mins after Everyone else's, this was annoying as everyone else was already finishing their meals by the time mine arrived. I asked the waitresses twice but received poor communication from the staff on what was happening with my meal.

The BBQ chicken tasted good, and the tamarind sauce was nice. Went well with coconut rice.

Overall the service was a let down and the price seems ok, however they stuffed up our bill, putting incorrect descriptions & pricing in the receipt, then adding additional surcharges to make up the price difference which was very confusing when you're trying to split the bill at the end of the night with 6 people. Better customer service/staff training would have bumped up the score by a few points.

One of my favorite Thai restaurants in Melbourne. the curries are great but the pad thai is outstanding. Just the right amount of sauce and chicken.

I was craving for some good Thai food ever since I came to Melbourne. I work in CBD and I have stopped by every thai restaurant I spot to check their menu. Being a vegetarian it was a lil hard to find a good place that caters to vegetarians. I am glad I stumbled across Kao Thai finally.

It is a cozy little place on Sydney Rd with tables a lil too close to each other but well maintained and neat. We played safe and ordered the standard tom yum soup and basil fried rice as it was our first time. Oh did we love our food. The Moscato was just a perfect match and made everything seem more delicious. We enjoyed the whole experience and can't wait to go back again. I would surely recommend it to everyone. 0.5 less is only because the tables are too close n the table next to us ordered some sizzler and the smoke was not appetizing luckily it did not last longer than a few minutes.
Chardos
Tom kha soup, takin me to heaven
I'll order another two, hmm better make it seven
Creamy base with that lemongrass kick
I gave it a slurp, and I gave it a lick
Pork belly left me feelin ecstatic
I'm emphatic, I'm about aromatics

This place was very disappointing from the roti bread (small serving), chicken satay (chewy), curry puffs (no matching sauce) green curry (so sweet) basil beef (beef was like mince) & the house wine was sourced from NQR liquor!!! We deviated from our fav. For something closer and this was highly rated, but I'm sad to say that I would drive further any day of the week to go to xxxx (don't wanna be rude) :(

Delicious! Not massive portions, but enough to fill the belly and its tastiest Thai I've had in a while! Try the Penang curry and red curry tofu stir fry. Oh and the coconut rice is like a dessert!
Sylvia's POV
Kao Thai is one of the small handful of Thai establishments situated on busy Sydney Road.
Interior is clean and minimalist.
Food presention was focussed on more than the food portion sizes, which fits into the hipster-like theme of Brunswick.
We ordered 2 stir fries, one curry and rice (for three) which just managed to reach their minimum eftpos requirement ($50).
Veganopoulous
Last month, I noticed a ‘vegan options available’ sign in the window of Kao Thai on Sydney Road in Brunswick. I went in to check out what was being offered and grabbed a regular menu. I asked the staff there if they could point out the vegan options and I was presented with a separate vegan menu with seventeen dishes to choose from. Not bad! So I made a note to go back asap for a meal. Pretty handy then that my sister chose Thai for her birthday lunch!
I've Bean There
Went to Kao Thai on a random Wednesday night on advice from a relative. The atmosphere was casual and quiet however, got busy after we arrived. Food was full of flavor, generous servings and service was fast and friendly. Well worth the 4.0 rating, definitely worth a visit if only for the crispy pork belly dish
Laura Alejandra Cordero
They now also have a full vegan menu! And it's delicious. The red curry was packed full of flavour. It's hard to find good Thai vegan options down Sydney road - thanks!
Amy Louise
One of the best Thai restaurants in the northern suburbs. I have been there a couple of times and really enjoyed the food. Everything was cooked beautifully and every mouthful was delicious. The food was so fresh and flavorsome. Great portion sizes; I’ve left every time feeling very content. The only downside is that the venue is very small, however the atmosphere is still relaxed and intimate. Reasonably priced too.

Chef must be in love because everything was just overly sweeeet! Felt like I was having dessert for dinner. Need to hold off the sugar for the flavours to be more balanced.
Kirsti Taylor
This is my favorite place to get Pud Satay Curry outside of Thailand. Bonus that its so close to my work and we can have Thaiday Friday every week.
Pud Thai is a little soggy for my taste but overall a great little restaurant (also does takeaway)

I went into Kao Thai the other night for dinner. One of my friends is vegan. Great to see they have gluton free and vegan options!! Keep up the great work guys!

Really really Noisy but decent food: I visited this place for dinner on a saturday night.
The restaurant was really crammped and became very very noisy .Probably the noisiest restaurant i visited in Australia , gave me a headache , never again.
Adam
Value for money, a lot cheaper than many other Thai restaurants. The spicey chicken ribs are amazing. Easy parking put the back of Phoenix street
Teomelvin39
Food: Absolutely agreed with the other food critics that the roast pork was one of the best in town. It was salty-sweet and full of thai-infused herbs. There's nothing to fault this and if I need to, there could be a more generous amount of pork belly.
The vegetarian spring roll was straight out from the fryer, the bold sauce was well-complimented the pork neck (could have done better to get rid of the pork smell). Give the roti a miss.

Service: was friendly and generous.

The restaurant served very bold flavours.

The best crispy pork in town! What a decent place to stop by. I've been finding a good Thai restaurant in Melbourne and this one is number one on my list! A little bit small place and pricey but the foods and service are outstanding. Crispy pork is a must here, my friend she doesn't like to eat pork but after I forced her to try then she just loves it! I will definitely keep coming back here.

Best Thai in Australia! absolutely delicious food, great location and awesome atmosphere! The Thai fried rice is the best i've ever tasted, delicious and full of flavour! same goes for the Pad Thai, amazing! and that beef and black bean, YES PLEASE. the prices recently went up a bit which is a shame, but definitely still worth going! highly recommend

Came here for dinner with byo wine and started with roti with peanut sauce and spring rolls. We then order the papya salad which had a strong tangy chili dressing as well as 4 mains being pad khing with vegetable and tofu, chicken Thai green curry, mussaman curry and calamari strips. The food portions are not very big but they do pack flavour. The restaurant is very small but the seating out the back in the garden area is preferred and the staff are more than friendly. Overall food was rather average and pricey for such small serves.
Sarah Jade Green
We've ordered takeaway twice now and both times the food was delicious! In love with the roti bread and dipping sauce. This time I had the vegetarian cashew nut stir fry with coconut rice. Heaps of veggies and the flavor was fantastic. Yum!

A brief phone call and a quick drive and our takeaway was ready! The restaurant was PACKED!!! I was greeted by a friendly gentlemen who passed over our ginormous bag of goodies: chicken skewers, roti, beef panang, chicken lemongrass and 2 servings of coconut rice.

Firstly, the aroma - WOW!!!! We knew we'd be in for a treat! The skewers and roti were both incredible! The cucumber and chicken with peanut sauce...whoever would have thought!

The chicken was steller with fresh lemongrass! Yummo!!! And the beef panang was a little sweeter than anticipated but also a killer dish!!!

Thanks Kao Thai! #1 Thai in Brunswick!!!

Kao Thai is quite the culinary find. The Roti in particular was superb, however being such a small area with mostly hard surfaces made the noise levels truly unbearable, so much so I doubt I'd return which is a real shame. In summary if you appreciate authentic Thai cuisine and you're auditory senses can tolerate the noise levels you'd do well to consider Kao Thai when next in Sydney Road.

Been to Kao Thai twice in recent times and it never disappoints. We found it bustling on a Monday night when other eateries were having their day off. Food came out quickly and was very tasty. Our rookie mistake was ordering coconut rice with the curry. Stick to plain rice since the sweet coconut flavour over powers everything. Nice staff.
Dominique K
Great flavours, speedy & friendly service. Decor and ambience very clean and inviting. Only issue is eftpos payment is $50 minimum, otherwise a $1 surcharge is added ... :/

Oh my god! The food here is too die for! We eat early because we've got small kids and the place was full at 6pm. The food was amazing. Even the littlest fuss pot loved it! Went back later in the week for a $10 lunch!
Michael
This is easily the beat Thai Ive ever had in Australia - and I've eaten a lot of Thai food, both here and in Thailand itself. Yum! I will be back here at least every few weeks or so.
TINA JOHNSON
Authentic Thai cuisine. Since there aren't many good Thai restaurants in this neighbourhood, I am really satisfied with their quality meal. Reasonably priced too. Stir fried dishes are great, rich in flavours.
Sarah
Stopped in here tonight, food was flavourful and fresh and staff were all very friendly. Couldn't ask for much more, will return next time we at in the area.

I have been to Kao Tai since they first opened last year. First they do not remember our faces even though we have been there numerous times. Second, as a personal trainer I am very strict with my diet especially when it comes to rice intake. As I have special dietary requirement I brought my own brown rice and ordered all dishes as per normal. As their business is now doing well they are starting to get cocky and told me off to not bring my own brown rice. (Especially didn't appreciate the rude tone from the Thai lady) I am happy to buy their rice if they could provide brown rice (or healthier carb options). Anyway, you lost a loyal customer and many others that I brought along for a bowl of rice. Hope your $2.5 of rice was worth it. Many other great Thai options in Brunswick. Thai on Street or Thom Phat in Brunswick is highly recommended than this rude bunch of people who don't even remember their customer's faces.

Decent thai food. Not the best 've had. They serve wine here and it's quite reasonably priced. The space tends to get cramped and crowded even during a quite Monday evening. I ordered a tom yum goong and the flavour and kick of the spices were a little lacking. The masaman curry with coconut rice was good. Average food for average service.

Just a few tram stops away, Kao Thai is perfect for when I'm craving some pad thai or larb salad. Really like the masaman curry and Tom yum and the mud crab fried rice is pretty awesome too! Minimum eftpos is 50 but I never have to worry because I'm always with a hungry group! I would probably say this is one of the best Thai restaurants I've been to in this area, will be recommending to my friends!

This place has been incredibly popular since it's opened. I have been there a few times for dinner and I am yet to find out what people find so amazing. Decent thai food, serves wine, reasonably priced. It's not incredibly good or incredibly cheap. Just okay. It's a small space with cramped seating and hard to get a table during dinner time. That said, you won't have trouble finding better thai food within a ten minute walking distance, ie Banna Thai, Brown Sugar thai, Tom Phat

Very impressed with the food here. The noodles and curry were very tasty and the service was exemplary. The price was extremely cheap as well
Out And About
😡 $50 minimum EFPOS (savings account not even a credit card)!
This is extremely disappointing and frustrating. Legally a cafe may pass on charges associates with efpos transactions if they want to. However cafes may not randomly charge $1 surcharges just because they feel like it.
Despite the polite staff and the ok meal our experience was needlessly embittered by this unnecessary tax.

I absolutely love this place. It's a lovely restaurant that serves genuine Thai food, the best I've had in Brunswick so far..! The service is great and the food is delicious. It's quickly become a regular haunt for us.

Great authentic food, great friendly service. Definitely worth a visit. Good value for your money. Will come back to try more dishes. Parking at supermarket car park at rear
They are reasonably priced and very friendly and the food is incredible. I would recommend the green thai curry with tofu or the pad thai. They have a very nice garden in the back with seating. They can get pretty busy at times but the service is very good.

Great Thai food on Sidney road. Indoor/outdoor areas are both good options. Reasonable prices and good location make it worth a visit. BYO welcome.
Good Eats
This place is amazing, every dish I've had here is balanced and delicious. The wait times could be improved, mostly I get my rice 10 minutes before I get my main but once the main comes out it's easy to forget.
Such great bbq chicken and the curries are spot on. Every time.

Great food. Ate here last night and the food was really yum, the penang curry was delicious. Service was quick and friendly enough. I would definitely return here.

Amazing thai. Loved the food here, great service & its delicious Thai!
Sweet And Sour Fork
Our plate of Pad Keemao with Beef ($13.9) was rather good. Though the wok-smoke and fish sauce made the rice noodles taste more Malaysian than Thai, the balance was shifted back by the distinct aroma of Thai basil and a small amount of green peppercorns. It was actually very tasty, the mouthfuls of slippery rice noodles going down a treat with the crunch of vegetables and tender sliced beef.

Delight in the complexity of traditional aromatics Dishing up delicious Asian delights, Kao Thai is so much more than it's quaint front of house demure. Owners John and Bee set up shop in late 2012 and have been busy ever since. The renovated space blends old with new and pays homage to Bee's homeland, Thailand. It's a family affair with Bee's brothers, Kin and Top, part of her Kitchen team. The trio know how to pack a punch with bold and subtle flavours and plenty of them. Staff are attentive and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. Among the hustle and bustle of Sydney Road, there is a real authenticity about this place. Bee front of house FOOD The menu is extensive and draws on Thai classics including curries, stir fries, seafood, salads, noodles and more. Ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. If you're after heat and fire, this place delivers on both fronts. All dishes, small and large, are good value and reflect a true understanding of the intricacies of we

What a charming little restaurant!. Having just moved to around the Sydney area we were keen to find a good Thai restaurant. This place did not disappoint! The place itself is small but this simply adds to the atmosphere of the restaurant. We found the service fantastic and the food exceptional...especially for it's very reasonable price. The fact that it was BYO was a great added bonus! Strongly recommended as this really is one of the top Thai restaurants that I have been to in Melbourne.

Amazing!. Great food at very reasonable prices. We love it here, has become our favorite little place to eat out!

Considering this 90% review we went to check it out but i was applauded by the lack of constant non service and the food was absolutely horrible.
The Hangry Chick
Nothing comes close. Hands down the BEST Thai restaurant in the North! Meals are always fresh and staff super friendly. I've recommended it to all Thai food lovers.

Really tasty food - we loved the gado gado and pad thai. Lovely attentive service. Nice backyard setting and really relaxed atmosphere. Will definately return.

Not Great. First time visit last night. Duck dish not great - too bony, too little meat and duck not actually cooked in the sauce. Strange metallic taste in the sauce too. The tod mun pla are tiny for the price. The roti was even smaller for the price and very thin. The pad thai was ok but lacked any acidity and we had to ask a couple of times for a wedge of lemon. At first we were brought lemon juice from a bottle. The staff are not unfriendly but not particularly helpful. 'The Man' who seems to be the money handler (and owner?) was given the opportunity to make amends for the flaws which I very politely brought to his attention when paying, but he was not forthcoming. We won't be going back.

Awsome. We have always enjoyed Thai food, but after dinning at Kao Thai we realized this place is above and beyond, the food amazing, taste, freshness and creativity with flavors amazing a must try! the service excellent.. do book for dinner as it does fill quickly.
Two Fat Cullos
Tried this very little place out the other night had a group of 4. Although small they manage to fit everyone in quite nicely, we sat right in front of the bar but didn't feel squished or in the way. We shared 2 entree's and 3 mains dishes the food was substantial & we left quite full, it came out quick & was very fresh tasting. We enjoyed our time and if in the area would most probably pop in for another visit

No competition. Delicious Thai. Crispy pork belly is my pick. Awesome. $50 minimum on card is just silly though! Just charge .50 for the transaction if you need
