Review Poached Cafe - Brunswick

Mahmoud Khodr
Delightful small shop on Lygon street. On a tram route which makes it easily accessible, the place doesn't look as fancy and the food is nice.. nothing special but the balance between quality and affordability is spot on. Staff is nice and they did make a mistake poaching my child's eggs instead of scrambling which they fixed very quickly.

Love Poached. Nice converted shop cafe done in a pleasant quirky style. My avocado toast with feta was rustic and lovely. My coffee was silky and gorgeous. It was expertly made. I adored the mixed berry smoothy too. Service was lovely throughout. What a terrific local cafe and with such reasonable prices. We will definitely return.

A bit overpriced, however the cauliflower smash with chicken cordon Bleu is delicious! Nice place for a work break or to meet someone over a good cuppa.

Poached, please adjust your hours on Google. It states open Sunday, but alas it's closed! Heaps of different people turning up today to find it closed. You're losing customers to Sugarloaf, two doors down .

Coffee is really nice and the staff were very friendly! Will most definitely try the food next time :)

Oooooooh ma gawd!!! Love love love. We're regulars, and always go in, at least once a week for breakfast/brunch. Can't actually say just how much I love this place. Always satisfying, quick service and lovely staff!

Nice atmosphere, I had roasted vegetables on sourdough bread, very nice, my partners GF toast was small and plain. Our daughters carrot cake was nice. Good coffee.

Great coffee, service and staple range of eggs brekkie & brunch options. Also: do not underestimate their sandwiches, if you are looking for some cheaper food options. Very flavourful and absolutely delicious.

Poached Cafe is one of the best food and value in Brunswick. Great breakfast menu. The meal that you'll enjoy is among the best in Brunswick and priced well below the others. Superior service with the smile. Great coffee, that is always repeatably same (=good barista). Overall, we go there most of weekends, it's always a great treat!

The owner is a lovely lady who never forgets our coffee order. Personal favourite is the ham & cheese croissant. Just a nice, friendly place to be!

Nice food and friendly staff.
Very basic menu but always generous with many different options that also includes the specials of the chef which change every week.
It is a must in Brunswick East!

Generous portions, good prices, friendly service and the chef can make changes according to your dietary requirements. They knew I was pregnant, and asked if I wanted to remove half-cooked eggs for a special order Carbonara (not in menu), and when I gave birth, he asked if I’m god to have the Carbonara as is, with egg! Relaxed great meals without breaking the bank. If you are looking to pay more for atmosphere and fancy-looking food, look elsewhere.

The owner of this establishment is terrible. The way she treats her staff if awful, hence the high turn over. I worked there and the preparation area was extremely dirty, I would not eat there in a million years! She had a go at me because I couldn't write everything exactly the way she was used to on my first shift! Place had a shit vibe too, don't support these a**holes.
I go to Poached for the french toast. They do it gluten free, its super tasty and cheap. Don't go here looking for anything too fancy - the menu is old school standard but the portion sizes are large and the pricing is very reasonable. The atmosphere is relaxed but again nothing too special and the service is fast and friendly. It is cash only so avoid if you've only got card.

Well we are foodies and own a cafe ourselves but this place isn't good and the reviews really don't match what we saw yesterday.
we had 2 breakfasts while these were a good size the cooked cut mushrooms had mould on them, but i think the worst was the Asian lady did not wash her hands while producing cabinet food she put her hands in everything and anything wiped them on her apron and continued to collect money and give change with out washing her hands it was totally gross.
She took pastries out of the display cabinet with her hands it was out of control
this place is so dirty the toilet had 1 foot of gross dirty water marks up the wall, paper all over the floor in the kitchen and dirty as.
The only good thing i saw yesterday was the amazing young girl who was so very nice from the moment we walked in, if she was near our cafe i would employ her in a second.

Poached was where I had my first meal in Melbourne, and I was all perked up by the cosiness of the cafe and the daintiness of its food!

Food consumed: Vegetarian breakfast with poached eggs, mushrooms, hash brown, avocado, sautéed spinach, grilled tomatoes and grilled haloumi
Foodie
Huge serving sizes, yummy and such affordable food. Coffee was yummy also! Not the trendiest place in Melbourne but quality, classic breakfasts, including HUGE big breakfasts and big omelettes! A giant omelette with chorizo, tomato, halloumi and rocket only $14! Will definitely be back.
Adelle Talarico
Food was bland and boring. My partner had the omelette which was cooked with nothing but egg, I had the poached eggs with feta, rocket and sumac and lemon dressing. There was almost no feta on my dish at all and no dressing that i could taste other than oil.

Coffee was good though.

Very average. Service is ok. Food is ok. Atmosphere is ok. Not much else to say really. If everything else in the area is too busy you can usually get a table here.

Had to log in and add my comments to those of Surban Uoon, below. I used to work here too. The bullying was shocking. If you sit on the first table in the courtyard, you'll probably overhear it (in the kitchen).

They also underpaid their staff, paid off the books (hence no WorkCover), and possibly misreported business income (hence why it's a cash-only business).

Take your money elsewhere.
Surban Uoon
I used to work here. They treat their staff like total crap, I've never worked anywhere else that treats their staff so shit. Total bullying.
Don't support this business.

Great place. Friendly staff, food cooked to perfection. If you are around the area definitely give it a look. Perfect for a Sunday brunch. Try the Ewing sandwich if you are looking for some lunch. Chuck a hash brown in there as well, your life will never be the same again

Lovely coffee however terribly poor air circulation. Very smoky and unbearable. Would need to rethink my Saturday morning hotspot.
Arnold Keith
Best vegie omelette in Melbourne, perfectly layered with Halloumi cheese, spinach, pumpkins, zucchini & a basil nut paste. It's not on there standard menu but is on the specials menu.

Coffe is good.

A must try when in BRUNSWICK.

We had the poached eggs with Spanish chorizo rocket and feta and it was delicious! The service was good and very good value for money. We couldn't fault the cafe

Good coffee but.... Great coffee but wish they'd get an eftpos machine

Well, I'm satisfied.. I had the Turkish pide. Was not disappointed. Cooked and prepared to perfection. The aioli was a standout. coffee was really good too. And cheap! Would come back.

Really didn't enjoy my last meal here. Great service, but the food was not good.

Love this place, simple & generous. We love this place! After trying lots of places around Brunswick we keep coming back here time and time again. The food is simple, fresh, unpretentious and the sizes are generous. Not to mention the great prices! Very simple decor, nothing fancy but if you are after a great breakfast/lunch at a reasonable price, this is your place.

'80's 90's radio. .... reminiscing
Coffee is ok... bit too hot, but ok.
Breakfast is ok, very cheap! $12.50 eggs benedict.... very very yellow hollandaise.
Waitress needs to tone down her perfume. ....georgio I think. ... way way too heady and strong for anywhere. .. let alone a Cafe.
Cheerful place.
I'll return:)

Great 'old school' fare. On a miserable cold and rainy day their steak sandwich and chips were spot on. Not pretentious in any way. The waitress was simply delightful.
Fozbear
Big breakup was very good. Scrambled eggs with ham terrific. Very good coffee. Good, polite, quick service.
S_Melbourne
Vegetarian breakfast was bland. Only the Haloumi had flavour. No flavoring or herbs, spices, sauce on anything else. Coffee was ok though

Love the freshly squeezed orange juice.. The soy chai latte.. Very friendly staff. I haven't had much food here.. But yummy home made sausage rolls..

Great cafe, always receive a warm welcome. The vegie breakfast is fabulous. Unpretentious, relaxed environment with good service and consistently good food. Recommended!

Pretty average, won't be going back there again. Much better options in the area!
Sandra

Disturbed local. I would always choose a mom and pop restaurant over a trendy spot as there's one that opened up in the neighbourhood. my first time @ Poached instead of going to the new place..as I've seen Poached quite busy most times when passing through.. friendly, clean but the food is hit and miss..I guess I just ordered wrong..only way for a mom and pop restaurant to survive is to maintain that quality and not slip into being something average..sourdough bread was stale and other condiments like the haloumi was tasteless. I would go back again just to try it out once more, but there really should not be any room for mistakes as there's way too many other restaurant options and new ones still popping up in the neighbourhood.

Always good. Poached is local to us and one of our favourite cafes. The service is always friendly and relaxed, the owner remembers all her customers (and their orders) and I have such a hard time deciding between poached eggs (lovely warm, runny yolks) and the amazing French toast which includes marscapone, maple syrup, strawberries, pears and BACON. Recommended.

Friendly and Consistently Good Coffee!. After trudging through the other cafes in the area and being let down by either them being packed full of hipsters, burnt coffee or terrible customer service, Poached is the cafe we were looking for. While the decor isn't up to speed with the trendy cafes around it, it's almost more relaxing and you feel like you don't have to be dressed in skinny jeans and flannelette shirts to eat there. The staff are friendly, the coffee fantastic (especially when the owner makes it) and there's always a heap of newspapers and mags to paw through peacefully. Our new local haunt!
Dan Da Man
Rural without the rustic charm. So, tacky and not for hipsters, trend-setters or intellectuals. Menu is laminated Comic Sans.

Live in area and keep forgetting about poached and my wife and I finally came here!! Nice place quick service good coffee and food. More smiles would have been nice but apart from that a pleasant experience.
Therese
Love it!. I eat here regularly (living a block away helps) and I always come back for the toasted rye sandwhiches.. perfect serving size and freshly made. Staff are really nice and friendly, and the coffee is good!
Kiss And Eat Up
In terms of breakfast , the food was fairly average compared to it's other brunswick breakfast counterparts. Had bacon ,avocado cheese on rye and was too large of a serving on fairly thick toast . The grilled potato consisted of thickly cut potato slices roughly cooked on a grill which left a lot to be desired. However the service was fast and friendly.

Disgusting.. Only had takeaway from here before. Was considering breakfast until someone (trust worthy, although not naming names) told me they use cage eggs yet still advertise as using free range. I was horrified that anyone could make this decision behind the customers back. Charge extra if you really can't afford free range eggs or take the label off the menu. Never lie.
Fungry Huck
Well made amazing tasting coffee, Great fresh food, quick service, great atmosphere and very well priced. That about sums it up.

Came back to Poached after a 2 year hiatus & after being let down by Small Block... & thank god I did! Fantastic breakfast of perfectly poached eggs with chorizo, slow roasted tomatoes, feta & rocket accompanied by a freshly squeezed juice. Fantastic service and they also have gluten free bread... Stoked!
EggsBenedict
I can't get enough of it!!. Love love LOVE Poached! Have been going here for years and every time I order Eggs Benedict with haloumi on the side. Too delicious. Very reasonably priced and the staff are always lovely and accommodating. The raspberry and white chocolate muffins are to die for and I can never resist getting one to take away! Possibly my favourite breakfast place in Melbourne!

Simply can not get enough of Poaced! Try to make it there at least weekly, outstanding food, coffee and service. I'm always greeted and farewelled with a smile and all of their tasty menu items are delicious and if nothing appeals to you, you can always mix and match anything and everything they have on offer!

I am happy to say that the coffees are perfect....

This is our local and we love it. Can't beat the food, coffee and service. Try the French toast with mascarpone and pear...to die fir or the omlette with chorizo. Good for ppl with kids too. And reasonable prices!
Foodster
Delicious. A buzzing little place with the sound of breakfast satisfaction. The menu selection is great but the standout for me was the mascarpone filled french toast topped with bacon, poached pears, maple syrup with poached pears.

Absolutely yums! A must try.
Jesspo
Outstanding service and friendly, helpful staff. I had the poached eggs with Spanish chorizo - it was to die for! My new local brekkie spot!

Best coffee in Brunswick. Never had a bad coffee here and I have at least one a week Great food and extremely friendly service. Very relaxed and unpretentious - a place you could take your parents!

Coffee Heaven. Great coffee and very satisfying vegie breakfast served with lovely thick slices of toasted bread. Generous portions and good value. Family friendly.

Highly Recommended. Fantastic service and wonderful food. Rocked up with a party of nine, no booking, on a Sunday morning and they happily accommodated us and made room. Food came out fast and fresh and the waitress' were lovely. Everyone was impressed. The poached eggs and chorizo were divine.
Nettie
Basic but nice. This place doesn't look like much from the outside, but the focaccias are lovely and the service is friendly and swift. I just wish they had more muffins.
Ed
Most other places I've been to does poached eggs better than Poached. I guess that says it all.
Linda
Mmmm best french toast i've had in a long time!
Alison
Ummm!. Perfect food friendly staff and great coffee
Robert Rompante
What can I say? This place is great, perfect coffee, excellent food and the staff are awesome. Try the chicken Ewing with artichoke. Delish. All there breakfast dishes are named after the local streets. Very daggy.
