Review Lucy Lockett - Brunswick

Nell Bea
Lovely little place to stop for coffee and food, tucked away, but easy to find. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Coffee was excellent. I had 2 poached eggs on whole grain, for $12, was cooked to perfection. My son had the Eggs Benedict, delicious and a very generous serving. Their menu is very varied, and caters for everyone. I loved their book section, use, recycle etc, but it would be great if you could buy the books or book swap when you go in for coffee or food etc. Very highly recommend a visit, and I will definitely go again

Strong espresso, delicious meals with a generous serve and wide variety of vegan, vegetarian, carnivorous and burger options. Decently priced too! I wish staff served as sooner when we sat down but they may have been busy. Food came quick enough after we ordered which is what counts to me. We sat outside, which was perfect for a sunny day, but inside was spacious with a cool vibe. Not too noisy. Plenty of large and small tables or long counter benches to accommodate. The books are a nice touch. I'd add extra points if I could for being a dog friendly cafe. Plenty of parking nearby. Highly recommended for catch up with friends or sitting alone to work or chill.

Great, friendly and extremely helpful staff. They go above and beyond 🙏😊. Great food and coffee. Positive vibes. Books and games available.

Cute little almost-alley cafe. Right on Barkly Road leading to Barkly Square and incredibly easy to miss as it's set back a little way. However you'll probably spot it by the throng of people. Often too busy to sit at we attended on a quiet day and found ourselves a seat at a humongous picnic table sized table (Thank God for a change someone has realised how much people don't like to be squeezed onto a clipboard sized table). We were sitting with perhaps three to five people on other tables, two of whom were already eating. We were attended to within about a minute, seated with menus, cold water and a drinks menu available from the cutlery pot on our table. The confusing part is next. Why is it that our coffee, with only three to five other people (two, as I discussed before, whom were already eating) took about twelve minutes to get to our table? LL wasn't busy, in fact from what I've seen of this gorgeous cafe, this is what I'd consider "Dead" in hospitality terms. Perhaps a new barista, I've never been there before, perhaps just a slow mindset due to the missing usual throng. But anywhere above ten minutes is a bit silly when there's so few people sitting in the cafe. The coffee was delicious but weak, (that's fine- I've never had this blend before so didn't know to ask for strong) and came hot. So no complaints there as the flavour was delicious. The food is where this review picks itself up. A delicious and (Oddly cheap) breakfast roll. Served on a gorgeous black dish with a smear of chilli jam, crispy bacon, perfectly cooked egg and butter. Just.... Wow. Really. Best breakfast roll I've had in a good long time. My partner got the build your own eggs with chorizo. Chorizo was delicious however eggs were a little firm and not so creamy/soft that you love to see with scrambled. But we can't complain about the food- the taste was flawless. We had a great time- and I don't want the timing on coffee to throw this whole review off. It's a -great- cafe with great decor and friendly-ish staff. Not super chatty or welcoming but kind and pleasant. Perhaps just a bad day or tension behind the lines. The cafe is mostly a vegan/vegetarian styled cafe (As you can see on the menu posted) however getting meat clearly isn't a problem for the omni's amongst us. There's options for us too so definitely don't avoid. Would -happily- go again to see if anything changes as I had and still have high hopes.

Good value creative breakfast dishes in a chilled out atmosphere. As you enter from Barkly St, the cafe is generously set out and well decorated. The atmosphere here is laid back, perfect for a weekend brunch. The menu offers a moderately sized range of creative dishes, which are good value for money between ~ $15 - $20. I had the Croissant Benedict, a successful combination of a crunchy croissant with the delicious bacon, poached egg and hollandaise combo that you're used to. With lots of competition in the Brunswick area, Lucy Lockett is keeping up. Will be coming back.

It’s been a while but I went for brunch with my friend and her 2 daughters, and the staff was very friendly with the them! The menu was simple but pretty fresh and good! 😊 Will be definitely coming back!

Best customer service ever! Walked in on New Years Day, shop was super busy and had some staff call in sick too which was affecting the service. Wait staff (super friendly) explained the situation to us before hand and told us food will be late even before we order. Had to wait almost an hour for the food but it was well worth the wait. And in the mean time the staff smiled and talked to us and made us feel welcome and looked after. Definitely coming back.. Also did I mention it’s dog friendly? 🐶

Such a cute venue, attentive service, huge portions, delicious coffee! So nice to sit outside and have a creative vegan brunch. Need to go back to try more of the menu

Went today after checking out the menu on your website (which by the way is still showing the old one) and was disappointed that the menu had been completely overhauled as I was looking forward to checking out the gingerbread pancakes. Ordered the eggs benedict instead and the sweet potato, taro and coconut 'rosti' was very mushy to the point where it tasted like baby food and needed more crisp to it. My sister ordered the Pina Colada hotcakes and it was just so sweet with little relief. I looked around at other tables and noticed that one customer barely ate her hotcakes and another left her avocado smash half unfinished. I have never experienced a 'bad' brunch before in Melbourne and this definitely comes pretty close to it. Portions are too big and it is a very risky move to overhaul an entire menu when the previous menu was a consistent winner judging by reviews. There is a lot of work to be done to fix your food and your menu and I will definitely not be back in a hurry nor recommend it to any of my friends.

Cafe on point today - house chai is great, spinach & corn fritters well worth a try, and vibe was chill and lovely. After 12 months away I'm glad I came back. Also good to see gingerbread pancakes still on menu

Took the family here today and had an absolutely awesome tasty chicken burger, it was mouth watering and full of great tasting herbs and spices. The freshly squeezed passionfruit drink was awesome and refreshing. Was looking at the reviews below and did not experience any of the bad service. The staff were very inviting and great help..the menu is actually enticing and the new management seem to have the customers best interest.

My favourite cafe in Brunswick East. This is my local which i get to as much as possible. There is plenty of space in a light and relaxed environment and the tunes are always good. Service is always friendly and fast. The food and coffee are always top notch. I recommend the Eggs Benedict, delicious!

The staff were absolutely amazing for my birthday brunch. The manager is hilarious and it’s got such a great atmosphere, the food is 10/10. Burgers were delicious

Until today I have always enjoyed this café. Today I feel I was judged by one waitress based on my appearance and clothing. (A large person and not a fashionable dresser.) and therefore treated as inferior. I asked for the same meal as usual and stressed that I wanted the eggs well done I felt she wasn't even listening. The coffee came out without the usual small glass of mineral water yet everyone around me got one, like why bother as if she would know what that's about!! The meal came out. I put my fork into the egg it was runny. I called over the same waitress and mentioned this. She took the meal away. 17 minutes later I got the same now cold meal back (no effort had been made to at least try and warm it up) including the baked on runny egg from previous egg. Upon paying I said I wasn't happy the new girl got the waitress in question who was just as down putting and arrogant as before she took the price of the coffee off my bill. Ironically the coffee was up to it's usual standard. This could have all been avoided if the waitress had not been so judgement in the first place. Remember never judge a book by it's cover.

Amazing service and delicious food!!! My friend had the acai smoothie bowl, presentation was on another level and I had the beef burger, so juicy definitely will be coming back

Just experienced Brunch at the New Lucy Lockett. Opening its doors today with new staff and improved Menu. Food is creative yet familiar, with simple and delicious twists on the classics like "Pope's Blessing" aka Eggs Benedict, but with a sweet potato rosti, smoked salmon and red spiced hollandaise (its little bit of heat is perfect on a winters morning). Coffee is fantastic; smooth, perfect temp and just the right coffee-bitter : creamy milky goodness ratio to satisfy even the most coffee-conscious. Staff are attentive, experienced and confident. Atmosphere is minimalist and relaxed with great art and greenery. Will definitely come back.

Waited for 20 minutes to be served upon being seated at a communal table right under staff noses near the counter. All while other cafe goers sitting at exactly the same table were being offered coffees and food. What made it even worse was the fact staff knew we were there and caught our glimpse on a number of occasions. After getting up to walk out, no apology was offered after mentioning we had been totally ignored. Very, very disappointing as we were looking forward to eating at Lucy Lockett after hearing so many good reviews. Writing this review from Brunswick Foodstore where the service is absolutely first-class.

Fantastic food, great coffee and very friendly staff.

Came to Lucy Lockett on a public holiday Tuesday and it was surprisingly empty - considering how yummy it was, I was surprised by the initial absence of people!

Ordered:
🍆 Aubergine with envy (vegan): miso eggplant, white bean puree, mushrooms, spinach and crispy kale. Served on a slice of sourdough ($18.00)

Review:
Really friendly, engaging service. There was lots of laughter amongst the staff which set a really comforting environment for the customers. Super fun!

The food was really good. Different mushrooms, a good variety of textures from the soft miso eggplant and mushroom to the crunchy fried enoki mushroom strands, crispy kale and the more grittier bread. Really amazing flavours at work too!

Large expansive tables (the biggest I've ever been seated at) and a great place to catch up with friends. I'd recommend Lucy Lockett!

Incredibly generous serves or delicious food, with a huge amount of vegan options. The staff are always friendly, delightful, accommodating to dietaries. A really lovely touch is their commitment to being environmentally-friendly.

I absolutely adore Lucy Lockett. The staff are incredibly welcoming, the food is wonderful, the vegan options are great! I come to Lucy Lockett at least once a week, and have been doing so for the last two years. It's one of my favourite cafes in Melbourne.

Went to this place for the second time today. Loved it. Staff were friendly and so funny! Very welcoming of our dogs and the food is always delicious. The coconut iced latte recommendation was the bomb! New fav spot.
Maria Koleda
The vibe is quite unwelcoming. Just because we asked for the water for the dogs or put up the umbrella in the sun doesn’t mean we should get rude behaviour from the ‘hipster’. We had a great meal at Thunder Road next door. Suggest people keep moving and don’t stop at Lucy Lockett
Selmani39
I’ve been here a few times in the last one and half years. Coffee is always good. The menu has changed once or twice and maybe a different chef. Food is good but not as good as it was with the old menu. Staff aren’t very attentive. Still great coffee and great music
Bob Fernandis
Decent Vegan food at expensive prices, added some most expensive bacon to my vegan meal and paid an overly expensive price of $26 for the meal
Pinch Of Bacon
What a great little find! The food is scrumptious and there is plenty of it. The drinks as yummy - especially the chai latte! Service is also really good.

Seriously one of the best brunch spots in Brunswick 😍😍 Lucy Lockett serving up quality smashed avocado, AMAZING fritters (defs coming back for this) and delicious fresh mango, passionfruit orange juice 👌👌 If you're ever north of the city this is definitely one to try. We've been back for their fritters again and again. Keen to go back and try out some of their other dishes 🙋🙋

This place was a surprise.

It is a catchy and busy venue at Brunswick. The indoor space is vast and the decor is quite modern and they also have an outdoor area that screams chilled and good vibes - they even had a sign with a joke outside!

I came here with a friend and he asked for the classic smashed avocado on toast with poached eggs and I had their special acai bowl with chia pudding.

I had been to places before where there is the option of adding chia pudding to the bowl but I hadn’t been to a place where the bowl already had that!

I must admit that I am not a fan of the bowl and I have some comments about it:

- This bowl had a top layer with the acai and then a bottom layer, in the middle, with the chia pudding and it was quite weird to taste the chia pudding all mixed inside the acai. Obviously this is a personal preference.

- Again, I personally love adding toppings and have more crunchiness into my meals and this bowl was lacking both toppings and crunchy bits.

- The size of the bowl is good and presentation is beautiful, and overall the dish it’s quite filling, due to the chia pudding.

It was an ‘okay’ bowl and I wouldn’t say it is a favourite of mine or that I would have it again. Service was good and the staff came to us 4 times asking if we needed anything - very welcoming and friendly.

I would be keen to give this place another go in the future and see if any of their other meals would be more interesting!

Haven't tried their food yet, but always impress me with good coffee. One of my favorite coffee spot in the area. Friendly staffs. Great ambiance. Greens and books.
フードは食べたことないけどコーヒーは抜群。見た目もかわいくて居心地のいいカフェです。シティからでも出向く価値あり。

I went here for the first time about a month ago and have been back three times since then. It’s a nice space and the food and coffee are both excellent. Numerous vegan options and I can vouch highly for the two I’ve tried, the Boulevard of Broken Greens and the Miso Vegan. Staff are really friendly and welcoming. Struggling to think of anything negative to say about this place. It’s just plain good.

This funky little cafe in a side street of Brunswick has a cool, relaxed vibe. With delicious food and coffee and friendly staff, it's always a pleasure to drop in here for a bite to eat. With lots of healthy options, and a huge vegan selection; it's hard to believe such tasty food is also good for you. I would recommend this cafe if you are in the area.

Amazing food. Amazing service. Amazing coffee. Hidden gem of Melbourne. Love the variety of vegan options. The chilli tofu scramble hit the spot 👌🏽

Came here for brunch with a friend this morning and was very pleased to find another great brekkie joint! I loved the vibe of the cafe which screamed 'hippie-central' from top to toe but in a good way; with ample sitting out front with tables and chairs at the ready to bask in the sun. The interior is spacious yet very inviting with a few communal tables for bigger groups of couples to share. After perusing the menu we decided to order a cold drip, genmaicha tea, bacon and egg frittata and the bi*ch peas. The cafe was pretty pumping at 10am on a Saturday (whichI assume is the norm) but being my first visit I was bit underwhelmed by how long we had to wait for our drinks (>10-15mins, almost 20!).

Once we got our drinks, food took another 10-15minutes to get to us. I had already had food envy looking at other tables receive their dishes which all looked incredibly delicious. The b*ch peas was awesome and HUGE - I almost couldn't finish it so we shared bits of each others. My friend wanted something small so hence the frittata was akin to a bacon/egg muffin cooked in a muffin tray (in terms of size). Once we finished our food we had to run off, and got a few takeaway coffees on our way out. Again these took abit long but this would be my one criticism of my visit.

Coffee was good as was the food, I'd come back to try some other dishes for sure.

love you Lucy Locket ! We keep going back and trying different dishes on the menu nothing disappoints- just a team of rock stars

What a gem! Lucy locket is run by a team who know what good service is - they are fun cheeky, and preempt your every need - producing high chairs, allowing you space for you pram, water for the dog etc also love that the kitchen team look to be having a good time but are producing some very visually pleasing dishes that are packed full of flavour - great coffee, outstanding menu with lots to eat - all dishes tried left us wanting to come back and eat our way through the rest of the menu -

I heard about Lucy Lockett when I read an article about the best coffee in Brunswick. It is five minutes walk from me and I never knew it was there till this year. I love going there in the early morning when things are quiet and being warmly greeted by Steven, Tom or Leah and having a coffee that lives up to its best in Brunswick reputation. I also love that they have a community lending library and lots of plants. The menu is delicious and diverse with something for everyone.

Hands down my favourite cafe in Melbourne. The service was incredible - lovely staff who were putting smiles on everyone’s faces. They were so fast and had such attention to detail with everything from the food/beverages to the presentation of the venue.

The venue itself is spacious - even on a busy day there was plenty of room to relax. The decor is bright and there has clearly been a lot of love poured into the place. Big fan of the eclectic bookshelf.

On my first visit I tried something savoury and on my second, something sweet. Both meals were the perfect portion sizes - you will not leave hungry. Their menu is inclusive of just about every dietary requirement, and doesn’t lack in flavour and flair. Would recommend both the ‘Benedict Croissantbatch’ and the ‘Not Crepe Pancakes’

If Lucy Lockett isn’t enough reason for me to move to Melbourne, I don’t know what is.

This place is one of my faves! The staff are so much fun, the coffee is always delicious and the food is well priced and tasty. They've just released a new spring menu with loads of vegan, veg, meaty and gf options so there is something there for everyone. If you're after a place that is kind, accomodating and devoted to giving their customers a nice time, then come hang out. I don't live in Brunswick but with staff and a menu like this, I'm happy to drive the extra mile to make it my local. Plus there is a killer op shop right next door! WIN WIN! Thanks mates, see you Monday!

BEST BEST BEST cafe in Melbourne! Found this gem on my way back from my gym and haven't gone anywhere since. The menu is huge and has plenty of options for vegos/vegans. I recently tried the 'Not Crepe Pancakes' and the "why so cereal?" - they did not disappoint. Food was presented beautifully and the portions were generous. And of course, the service is second to none - friendly, relaxed but on to it! Great vibes and always buzzing. Keep it up!

Appealing menu but executed without any love (or skill)
I checked the menu online before I arrived at Lucy Lockett and was looking forward to the lunch of Fritter be Corny (zucchini and sweet corn fritter w/ goat feta, chilli jame, rocket salad and poached egg). What was served was more like 5 large croquettes. They had obviously been cooked in oil which was too hot because the outside were crispy to the point of being black and the inside was gluggy with zucchini and (I presume) flour which hadn't been cooked through. The salad wasn't dressed.

My companion had the Not Crepe Pancakes which seemed to have been slopped onto the plate and were undercooked which made the texture extremely unappealing.

The service was quick when we arrived as we ordered the coffees and our meals but no one followed up with us to take away our empty plates, to see if we wanted a second coffee or anything else.

The place wasn't busy so its not as if they were distracted with lots of customers.

The coffee was ok.

The place itself is spacious and bright.

This place is not cheap and needs to do much better with the food.

Food 1.5*
Coffee 3.0*
Service 2.0*
Ambience 2.5*

I see these guys more than my own family. Always looking after me and catering to my dietary needs. Food and coffee here is as good as it gets (try 'Balls to the Wall' from the new menu). And more importantly (to me), their friendly and personalised service is why I keep coming back, laughs and banter guaranteed.
Missjkenny
The vegan muffins are LEGIT! Also the coffee is great, they are open early and there’s ample seating indoors and out! More than enough to keep me coming back for more!
Simmyeats.Melb
Popped in for a coffee here, cute cafe with lots of seating, light and pot plants. There’s even a book swap here which I thought was a great idea.

Menu looked good, unfortunately the pastries had sold out.

Latte was really good and would like to come back to try the food.
Foodie Heaven
This place is pumping on the weekends. Great ambiance and the music is awesome. Coffee and Food is ok. The menu has been the same for some time now. It would be great to see a menu change besides that I would recommend Lucy Lockett
Lauren Prott
Very good chai latte! Probably the best I've had. The granola bowl was also very good, really like the combo of fresh kewis, raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries with crunchiness of the dried banana, granola, and dates. Bowl was surprisingly filling, thought it looked smaller in pictures but was fairly large. (Forgot to save my picture of the meal, sorry). Staff was very friendly, store was well layout and a chill place to stay at and talk with friends.

I visited Lucy Lockett over the weekend and was quite impressed. I loved the outdoor seating at the front (perfect if you want to bring your furry friends)! This cafe isn’t in the hustle and bustle of Sydney road or Barkly street, it’s in the more quiet residential area which is quite nice. I kept it simple and tried the Lucy Lockett Omelette which was one huge omelette that had been cooked and baked in a round pan - this meant it had crispy edges which I loved (I hate runny eggs!). It had cherry tomatoes, cheese, smashed avo, a delicious tomato chutney, herbs and came with crusty bread. I recommend.
Thanks for having me guys!

UPDATE
I was lucky enough to be invited to try the new menu at Lucy Lockett. Thankfully for me the gingerbread pancakes were still on the menu and I finally had the chance to try them more than one year after my first visit. I’m actually kicking myself for a working so long, unbelievably delicious and such a unique flavour. Really interesting combination with the rocky road and I absolutely loved the rich chocolate mousse it all worked really well.
We also had an omelette with came out rather theatrically under a cloche as well as the Japanese fried chicken burger. This was quite a traditional recipe and thus quite salty so the yummy mayo helped as did the excellent accompanying chips.
They also rather impressively boast all their baked goods as house made which looked utterly delectable and I’m already more than regretting not trying the intriguing strawberry jam doughnut muffins but after demolishing the pancakes I couldn’t manage it. Until next time

I live to eat not eat to live and the acai at Lucy Lockett is the sort of thing that makes life worth living. A deliciously thick consistency with plenty of delicious fresh fruit and crunchy granola for added texture. Probably the best rendition I've had and I've easily eaten in excess of 100 acai bowls in my time. Easily. I think the menu is utterly fantastic and would love to come back and try the gingerbread pancakes that everyone so raves about. We sat outside in the beaming sunshine as we debated a post breakfast treat from the cake counter. An absolute treasure of a find

I was lucky enough to try the new menu which had just been released during my visit and loved the unique fine dining twist on brunch.

The space is completely dog friendly which I love and the staff were also extremely warm and welcoming.

The highlight for me was the soft shell crab burger which includes the whole entire crab fixed on top of a bun and slaw.
Thecheftable
a nice relaxing cafe , coffee was great and the service was fantastic. unfortunately, we didn't have good experience with the food was too salty. I will come back for coffee,😃

> Breakky board with mini chia bowl served with smashed avocado on sourdough, a poached egg, beetroot hummus, feta, dukkah + fresh OJ AND Zucchini + sweet corn fritters served on a bed of rocket with feta, tomato salsa, chilli jam + poached egg AND Gingerbread pancakes stacked and served with mixed berry compote, whipped maple butter + maple syrup <

Lucy Lockett is quite a large café tucked away in the backstreets of Brunswick. As well as it being a local café, people travel from all over just to check out their menu. The staff are extremely friendly and very welcoming, even when it is peak time. Their new menu is full of vibrant and filling dishes. We chose a range of meals that we thought would be perfect for an everyday consumer.

The breakky board had quite a variety of elements to it so I was very eager to try that. I enjoyed how the presentation was spread out as it allowed for each little meal to be separated from each other. The mini chia, omg, I wanted to finish the entire bowl but I was way too full. The flavours were so sweet and the texture of the chia was perfect. The smashed avo had a really nice texture and it was basically perfect. The poached egg was perfect for the size of the toast as it just oozed over the entire slice. The beetroot hummus added a bit of sweetness to the dish whilst the feta gave a perfect sour contrast. The fresh OJ just topped the dish off nicely and was super refreshing.

When the fritters came out, I was in awe of how many there were. As you guys know I am such a fritter fan, so seeing so many balls on a plate made my mouth water. The fritters were very thick and a little dry, however, the tomato salsa and chilli jam balanced out this issue. The dish had so much flavour and was super filling. This is a must get dish!

I’m not a massive fan of gingerbread, however, I was really keen to try these pancakes because I have heard so much about them. They were quite dense but thin. The flavour was so strong but really sweet, and not being a gingerbread fan, I was surprised with how much I enjoyed the flavour. The mixed berry compote added a sour contrast to the pancakes and the syrup was super sweet to top it off. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, I would highly recommend trying these!

The breakfastpiggy team

Piggies out, Oink oink 🐷🐷
The Fo0die
Fo0die dined as a guest of Lucy Lockett and as such, the rating does not give any consideration to customer service.

We arrived at 11:30am on a Saturday to find Lucy Lockett located in an unsuspecting residential area. 1P parking is available along the Barkly Street with some 2P spots available in the streets surrounding (although be sure to check the signs as some were 1P). We parked on Lygon Street which was 2P until 1pm on a Saturday (with no limit after that).
Connie
Had a delicious meal here the other day ☺️ really liked the pancakes but I didn't enjoy the fritters as much because they were slightly soggy
2wo Fat Girls
A spacious, backyard-type cafe in the ultra-tredny suburb of Brunswick, Lucy Lockett is a very relaxed and hipster brunch establishment, featuring some of the largest dining tables I’ve seen for two people – making it a very comfortable and perfect Instagram-brunch-spread-photoshoot opportunity. The menu features a range of classic brunch menu choices, with a focus on special market juices, as well as a few pastries and dessert choices. The chai latte and iced mocha we got were delicious in their own right, and the icecream on my mocha made it a perfect thirst quencher for the hot Melbourne day outside.

The atmosphere here is great and there are heaps of tables. The staff was very friendly.

The food tastes amazing. The ginger bread pancake is really unique and was awesome.

We can’t believe we haven’t been here to this little gem before! What a gorgeous little place and the food is absolutely amazing. The stand out dish was the Gingerbread Pancakes which went down well with a fresh juice. This is a place to go when visiting Brunswick.
Being Delicious
Absolutely gorgeous cafe space in the heart of Brunswick! The staff were very friendly and there were so many tasty options to choose from. I got the gingerbread pancakes which were incredible and my friend tried the smoothie bowl which she liked too. The pressed juices are also super tasty and worth trying!

Had smashed avocado.
Beetroot hummus was really delicious that was my favourite of this dish. It was quiet different with the one I tried in Crux&Co,which tasted like pure hummus.
Poached eggs…as you can see,it was not fresh, but cooked well.
Smoked salmon,average.
Staff was so friendly!

2nd time
Ordered exactly the same thing.
I told the staff that eggs could be poached better and showed him the problem(looked not good and not fresh but cooking time was great)
The staff gave me the green tea for free and said that their kitchen would make some improvements.

Really great cafe on Barkly St. Friendly staff, consistently good food and great vibes. My fave is the mini smoothie bowl with avo toast and a poached egg and fresh squeezed OJ....all for $18! All my favourite things on one plate!

Came here on a Saturday morning for brunch with my partner. We were invited to sit at a nice table and ordered coffees. However, after settling in with our (nice but not amazing) coffees, we we quite abruptly told we had to move so another party could sit at our table. The staff member was apologetic but given that the other groups seemed to have booked ahead, there is clearly an issue with organisation at this place. It was very crowded, but I guess that is typically for most cafes on a Sunday. Still, the staff were stressed and the barista kept yelling for people to bring him more cups and to collect the coffees. Not exactly the relaxing brunch experience we had in mine. The food was good (I had the smashed avo and my partner had the classic eggs benedict). It was more expensive that is typical for similar Brunswick cafes but the portion sizes were huge. Despite the ambiance issues and disorganisation, I might return, but probably on a weekday when things are less busy.
Happy Egg 🍳
This cafe has such a beautiful space that gets a nice stream of sunshine through the window in the afternoon! Service was great, and the person who served me was happy to let me move tables when I asked (since i could feel the cold draft coming in since people kept on coming through the door). In general, the staff were very friendly. I ordered a soy mocha and an acai bowl; both came out quickly and were super delish! The acai bowl was very filling and I was sad that I couldn't finish it all! Overall, this is a great cafe. 😊

First time here and I bought a take away coffee in this cafe in the morning. It tasted good! So I decided to come back during lunch break! I ordered a coffee and sweet corn fritters! The food was so yummy! Excellent service. Friendly and nice! Definitely will come back!

So good to see this cafe buzzing again with great staff and management! What a turn around! awesome coffee too 😉 I'll definitely be back for breakfast soon

I Highly rate Lucy Lockett - Coffees great, Foods great & the service is friendly and overall pretty good too .. The only down fall I've had with Lucy so far is the $6 charge for bacon as an extra and it only comes out with 1-2 'strips' of bacon. I strongly believe this has to be reviewed, bacons life but not for $6

I'm always slightly dubious when my boyfriend, Mr W, suggests a cafe or restaurant for our next outing. But when he mentioned Lucy Lockett, I was happy to oblige. The cafe is conveniently located at the end of our street and we often go past and notice it's always bustling.
A quick scan of the menu revealed they served the Brunswick hipster staple of smashed avo on toast - a must for me.
We arrived and were immediately greeted by a friendly and obliging staff member - I think it might have been the owner . I ordered the breakfast board, which came with smashed avo on toast, a poached egg, feta and a beetroot relish, with a mini acai bowl and a small glass of fresh orange juice. I often want to try more than one dish on a menu so this was great for me, and very reasonably priced at $17.50. Mr W is a sweet tooth and selected the gingerbread pancakes with ice cream, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
The only downside is that the place was a little loud for me and the window benches overlook others eating outside (like right in your face). But that's just me being picky.
I will be back.

Absolutely love Lucy Lockett! I bring every single one of my interstate visitors here for brekky and they are always super impressed. Amazing food, delicious coffee, and the staff are always happy and friendly. Glad to live around the corner from this little gem!

A vibrant, welcoming cafe! Open all through the public holiday period which I loved! Allowing me to catch up with friends, over a delicious meal! I had the Nutella French toast. The toffee on the banana was amazing, only downside was it needed more Nutella! Coffee was great, staff were friendly and everyone was happy with their meals. Home made hash browns were amazing. Will return!

I can't fault this place one bit. Very roomy inside, the tables were large giving me plenty of room to spread my crap on, good service, the food presented beautifully and tasted even better!!!

An Awesome Brunch Place down a hidden St in East Brunswick, but all the best Brunch Places are!

Lucy Locket used to be my closet brunch spot and by closest i mean 2 mins from my house! 1st Moving to Melbourne i found this place and while i had no job i would spend so much time here, The Food Coffee and Service always amazing from my 1st Visit to my last and if i am ever in Brunswick i do on occasion Pop back in.

The Food is so fresh and always seasonal i have almost eaten the whole menu sadly i cannot find many pics to show the times i went here however i do have one from a dish i had about 6 months ago on a weekday morning and it was so good! i am not sure of the name now but it was one of my favorite croissant brunches that i have eaten, server with bacon a poached egg and a complementing sauce.

The Coffee always so good and tasty, and i always got asked if i wanted a second which lots of places do not ask me i always said yes, and all of this was served with a smile and wonderful service. if you live near by pop by and say Hi.

Restaurant Type: Brunch/ Cafe

What a lovely cafe! Bright, spacious and clean with friendly staff. The coffee was so good I had to ask what coffee beans they're using. The waitress told me it was Humble Harry's which I later noticed they do sell the coffee beans too. I ordered one of the "specials"- prosciutto benedict on pumpkin bread. It was really tasty and the eggs are perfectly poached with runny yokes! The berry smoothies was a little expensive for $10 per glass but I guess it's worth the price given the quality ingredients they use. My partner also enjoyed the music they play. We both had a very relaxing brunch, didn't have to queue or felt rushed. They have a lot of healthy options with range of superfoods on the menu too ( gluten free bread, almond milk, kale, kombucha). I'll come back again anytime! Two thumbs up!!

I can only comment about the coffee here. I went this morning and had a soy latte. It was very good. Perfect strength and smooth. I will return to try their breakfast menu.

Amazing food! The croissant and the pancakes were incredible! Would highly recommend adding a chill and fennel sausage with the croissant. The coffee was great as well, think we had about 8! Would definitely go back

My friend and I met here for lunch on a Wednesday, we were greeted by friendly staff, I ordered the bacon and egg roll without the roll, and my friend the bacon and egg roll with the roll. Both were delicious and service was prompt. I was a little surprised to be charged more for my meal but wasn't too fussed and happy to pay as I did receive a nice meal that seemed to have extra egg. overall a pleasant experience. i will be back for more catch ups with friends.

Back on the food wagon, because of course, stuffing one's face all through the holiday season is a year end tradition that never seems to get old.

Walked past Lucy Lockett on the way to Wide Open Road some time ago and as the good bunch of little Melburnian's we are where eating is a pastime, we added it to the list.

Lucky for Lucy Locket they had to put up with us twice in one week.

Visit Un:

The day after sitting at one of our locals with a lemon sucked face of misery (okay, it was thirty-six degrees, still, and we were indoor without a fan), I dragged my sorry, tired self into Lucky Lockett and was greeted by the loveliest smile. You know that aura of pleasantness that evokes the sense that there must be an invisible halo above the person's head. That.

Service: +1

I had every intention of mauling a plate of Gingerbread Pancakes. Definitely one thing I appreciate about technology when it comes to menus. Yes, I am the one struggles to decide what to eat, with one eye on the menu and one wandering eye on the food coming from the pass.

Well, we were handed the menus and when it comes to baked eggs, all bets are off.

Baked Eggs x 2

Not all baked eggs are equal. Pleasant enough? Yes. Eggs were not overcooked. Chorizo was nice, but the sugo-like sauce err'd on the side of a little too sweet. It should have balanced out, but unfortunately it did not. Toast was... just toast. Now... if it had of been ciabatta or the likes, it may have lifted it a little.

The overall experience was nice.

Visit Deux:

Because one wakes up on Saturday morning with nothing else to do. While the Gingerbread Pancakes were on my mind, I thought I'd get it out of way.

So more cake than pancake. Enjoyable, but didn't pack quite enough of a punch to remind me of Christmas. (It's a weird prerequisite, but we all have our kinks.)

Presentation was pretty (butter concoction on the side, but no maple syrup?). Interesting texture added by some sort of granulated chocolatish sprinkle? (I know, I'm off my game.)

Would I eat it again? Sure, but maybe not as a main dish, more something to share for dessert.

The Croissant Benedict I'm told was just good.

Easy tunes. Haunt for the locals. Child-friendly.

Great friendly, attentive and personal service. Clean and spacious dining space, interesting soundtrack and nice outdoor space for a sunny day. Best coffee in Brunswick!

Lucy Lockett lost her pocket, Kitty Fisher found it. If by pocket, the writer means moolah spent on food. It’s a relatable problem. Once upon a time, two bloggers sacrificed some notes from their dishevelled Gen-Y pockets. You see, it seems we spend all our hard earned dough, on luxuries such as smashed avocado. So much so, we forego paying the unattainable mortgage. What does a white haired partner from KPMG know? The Melbourne cafe scene can reach deep into my pockets, anytime. Lucy Lockett is

Visited Lucy Lockett at the recomendation of a friend & turned out to be great! Cute little place with great interior and super friendly staff.

Checked out Lucy Lockett this Sunday whilst in Brunswick, don't worry about lining up there's heaps of tables available! I ordered the croissant Benedict with Brie, smoked bacon, a poached egg and house made hollandaise sauce. It was definitely good, but maybe a little heavy with Brie, not sure. I would probably order the porridge next time, looked delicious!

Unlike the nursery rhyme for which this cafe is named, there is nothing destitute or impoverished about Brunswick’s Lucy Lockett. On the contrary, it has a warm community feel to it. To one side of us friendly wait staff work with a couple of locals to solve a crossword, on the other side my heart is warmed by a couple of men speaking their native Italian tongue and opposite us sat a lovely lady with her dog who kept my young son entertained while we ate. Nothing felt forced or fake, there was a genuine sense of community where everyone is welcome and warmly greeted as though they were an old friend.

A single-spaced cafe tucked away in a suburban side street in Brunswick, Lucy Lockett patiently awaits. With large-tabled seating out the front and on one side of the cafe, and the front counter and kitchen facing opposite, this venue has a cool, modern vibe. Upbeat tunes play at an appropriate volume, and natural light fills the entire cafe (perfect for us photo-loving food bloggers).

Overall it was a rather enjoyable brunch experience. Portion sizes were more than generous, and ingredients exceptionally fresh and tasty.

While the execution wasn’t flawless, and you may not get the same plating as seen in other photos, you do get to customise each dish to your heart’s content and make it something you would absolutely devour. My customised Croissant Benedict, with added sides, was thoroughly enjoyable and I treasured every last bite.

Absolutely loved our visit to this gorgeous cafe. Not only is their food plated up beautifully, it tastes delicious! Coffee is top notch and staff are super friendly. We had the baked beans which was delicious and the acai breakfast board. Juices were fresh too! We will definitely be back- they've got something special going on and is great for the summer with their outdoor area!

Had breakfast with my housemate here today and although we had to wait a while for our food, it was delicious. Unfortunately the trendy Hipster stone and chopping board our breakfasts were served on made it incredibly difficult to actually eat it. I had to ask for a regular plate when I lost some of my croissant benedict because the stone it came on was so small. And my housemates chopping board made it super hard for her to keep her egg yolk from just running off it. I also had to ask for salt and pepper. The watermelon juice came from a bottle which wasn't awesome but again, the food was 5 star.
Delicious food with a few minor serving issues.
Don't get so caught up on what you're serving on, the food will speak for itself.

Delicious prosciutto Benedict!! Great chai latte also. Staff very friendly!! The atmosphere was great. Would definitely come back here again!

Good food, really nice coffee and friendly staff - just what you need from a local cafe. My go-to is the sauteed wild mushrooms, but my partner really loves a good crumpet.

My family and I just had an amazing lunch and coffees

The ambiance was awsome relaxed freindly and the service was second to none

Thanks guys we will definitely be back again 😎

Lucy Lockett is one of the most charming and welcoming cafe's I've ever been to. The service is not only fantastic, but it is consistently fantastic, every time I visit the staff are attentive and kind, and the food is absolutely delectable with generous portion sizes. Can't speak highly enough! Will always return here!!

Used to love this place when it was Red Scooter. Now it's got a different name, different menu and a different vibe. Today my partner and I went to brekkie here and was so disappointed. We got seated quickly which I thought was a good sign. It was quite busy as well. The skim latte I ordered was bitter. My partners iced coffee was literally just cold coffee, no ice cream and no sweetness. I asked for the wild mushrooms and was told they had no mushrooms left. I then ordered the smashing avo with a side of baked beans. My plate arrived looking beautiful but tasting average. The baked beans were sweet! Also no salt and pepper offered to us. Quite disappointed.

This is my local which i go to for lunch at least once a week. There is plenty of space to move around and tables aren't squeezed together too tightly unlike other cafe's. I have tried most of the menu at Lucy Lockett however my favourite dish is the Salmon Eggs Benedict. I am not usually one for Eggs Benedict as they can be a bit bland however the Salmon Eggs Benedict here is sensational.

My food and coffee is always delivered quickly, staff are friendly, service is great as are the coffee and tunes.

Highly recommended.

A very unique Melbourne cafe experience; a must-visit for anyone who love waiting at cafes feeling hungry without any coffee or food. Having been here a few times in the last 2 months, we would go again to remind ourselves what disappointment taste like. 10/10 would recommend you to stay at home and make breakfast at home yourself; because honestly it'd be much better.

To start with, you'll have to try very hard to get any attention from the staff to get a menu or order coffee. It was a nice surprise to get abruptly told that you can't order food then because "our kitchen is really busy" though it's barely 11AM and it's not a full house. All's good though, at least you can hope to get some caffeine into your system, right? My recommendation would be to bring along at least 2 seasons of Game of Thrones or your favourite TV show to watch, because you never know whether your coffee (just coffee, not food) is going to be ready in the next hour or not.

Do swing by on weekday morning on your way to work when the place is very quiet. Get a take away coffee & pastry from the display, then awkwardly wait for at least 15 minutes whilst you're welcome to casually observe the inefficiency happening right behind the counter as the staff (choose to?) ignore your order and can't quite work out whether what to do with the pastry. Overall, our three visits here have been a truly well-executed performance of inattentiveness, inefficiency, lack of communication with the staff, kitchen and customers.

Food was amazing, very nice serving size and price. The staff were also lots of fun, it really makes a difference when you can see staff enjoying being at work; good energy. Decor was also tops, but the music was verging on too loud at a few points

Can only think of one word: disappointment

Came for brunch at 11am. Ordered coffee with extra chocolate and froth on top. Came out with neither. Asked for eggs benny croissant got told no croissants left. Ordered wagyu burger. Partner ordered smashed avo deconstructed with toast on the side (multigrain). Also ordered side of sweet potato fries with aioli on the side. An hour later still no food. No drinks offered in the meantime. Asked about food after about 50 minutes and got told another 15 minutes. Saw a wagyu burger sitting on the pass. A waiter carried it around for about 5 minutes not sure where to put it. Put it back on the pass for about 10 minutes until it was finally brought to the table with my partners avo smash which didn't have multi grain bread, wasn't deconstructed and wasn't toasted. Asked the waiter and he said there's no multigrain left which would have been great to know when we ordered it. Took it a back to the chef to have the smash separate from the toast as requested. Then had to request to have the bread toasted as it was still bread and not toast. Sweet potato fries were then brought out with a side of tomato sauce. When asked about the aioli got told they were also out of this (is there anything left that they aren't out of, besides disappointments) so had to run home and grab some from our fridge.

So at this point not in a great mood and we were both tempted to just leave but decided we had to justify our hour long wait by eating the food. My burger was cold but otherwise OK. My partners Avo smash was good despite the bread not being multi grain.

The only reason this scored more than a 1 was the actual quality of the food and the fact the owner discounted our drinks after we complained about the terrible experience.

I mean really, what cafe has no croissants, no multi grain bread and no aioli at 11am on a Saturday which is peak trading time for a cafe!

#soniamdissapoint

The worst service ever. The cafe owner was trying to pick up a girl that was sitting next to me instead of doing his job. I have seen 3 different baristas since they have taken over and the coffee now is the worst coffee that I have tasted here is well below Brunswick standards I wouldn't recommend it at all!!!

Once upon a time Lucy Lockett used to be one of my favourite cafes in Melbourne, but unfortunately that is no longer the case. What used to be a lovely, bright cafe, is now dark and dingy. Why is there cheap Banksy prints all over the walls? Tacky.

The service was pleasant, even though I was given a knife and fork to eat a dessert.

The coffee was disappointing, my long black was watery, insipid and had no body.

I had the bavarois, so many flavours but yet none at all apart from banana. My friend had the eggs bene, said the hollandaise was nice but the salmon was lacking any normal smoked salmon flavour or texture and the rosti was grainy.

So apart from the service, Lucy Lockett was a disappointment. I won't be returning.

Love the interior of the place, funky and fresh with friendly staff.
Unfortunately there were no smoothies available, the only juice they had was apple and pear which tasted like it came out of a can (not very fresh)

Had the jumping jacks, some mushroom dish. Eggs were poached to perfection and sour dough was crisp. But what the hell is all that foam? Was flavourless with a weird texture and ruined the whole dish and made my bread soggy! Mushrooms were also bland.

My partner had the eggs Benedict without salmon instead with bacon and a side of mushrooms. Not your typical eggs benedict. Definitely had more flavour than my dish so I would recommend that.

I very much enjoyed my brunch experience here. Produce was fresh and of a high quality, and the service was good. The cafe atmosphere was also good.
Sarah
Was not impressed. Menu on website didn't match the one in the shop. Coffee was bland and not worth wasting money on. Set up was average as the tables were too large to have a civilised conversation
LillianEvelyn
Food is very average. When there are that many good cafes in Melbourne this place really did not stack up.

burger - meat not cooked (raw inside)
salad - unbalanced quantity of ingredients meant you had mouthfuls of one ingredient without tasting the overall taste. very unappetising

Their professional photos look great, but the taste is far from. disappointing.

There is a new menu now - too fancy & over complicated. The old smashed avocado was the best I ever had. Give the people what they want! Boo 👎🏼
Had an amazing start to my day today with a lovely brunch at Lucy Lockett's this morning.
We were greeted at the door by a charismatic host, Christian, who had an energetic personality which made the whole day lift. The food was absolutely amazing, each dish its own creation full of flavour and a delight to eat!! Coffee was great and fresh, Hot Chocolates fantastic too!
The service was great and overall experience one to remember, as a first timer, I will definitely be going back!

Very lovely atmosphere for brunch dining experience. Took awhile to find the venue as google map lead us to the opposing side of the venue. Food presentation was exceptional with unique burst of flavours combined in each dish.

I had a great brunch experience here yesterday! The food looked and tasted amazing and the coffee was also great! :)
The staff were very friendly and the overall atmosphere was welcoming.
Looking forward to next time at Lucy Lockett! :)

Have been coming here for a few months. Looks like new staff and management so interested to see how it was.
Was greeted by a friendly smile at the door and told that it would be a 30-45 minute wait on food. The menu has changed which was a refreshing surprise. The new take on the classics like the 'popes blessing' (eggs benedict) was nice to see on a cafe menu. As usual, the coffee was to die for. The meal was worth the wait... The king salmon and red chilli hollandaise melts in your mouth.
All in all, a lovely morning. Would have been nice for the food to come out a little quicker but it's to be expected with a whole new staff finding their feet. Will definitely be going back in a few weeks to see how things have come along!
Melinda
Awesome atmosphere and the service is outstanding

Then you order a coffee - WOW! I love a good coffee and this is next level!!!

The food, a modern, nourishing and funky twist on the eggs benny! Absolutely love this place we will be back!

Thanks Christian and team!

Can't believe I waited 1h+ for a burger that's hardly acceptable. Black listed. Coffee came 20min after we ordered. All customers left either angry and hunangry!
Tom S
Went to Lucy Lockett for the first time since under new management today and left disappointed and hungry.
Didn't even bother ordering food with a "1 hour wait", ordered a coffee and after waiting over 20minutes had to cancel it and leave.
Not impressed, miss the old Lucy Lockett.
Andrew Moore
Don't know what happened here but new management and complete staff overhaul. Waited an hour for eggs on toast and was then told there would be a further wait. Forget it.

Great service, coffee was so good and food was perfect, I have specific dietary requirements and they catered to me perfectly without making me feel like a bother :-)

Fresh and New.
The new staff and updated modern menu are great. Fresh new options and flavours with creative twists on the brunch classics.

>> Sweet Potato, Taro and Coconut Benedict, with red spice hollandaise and smoked King Salmon. The potato cakes are warm and comforting, the cool salmon cuts through but isn't overpowering, then a slight spice at the back of your throat from the hollandaise.
B.O.G in my opinion.

>> Five Grain Porridge, with coconut milk, black rice and tropical fruits. Like a warm hug, from a place you would rather be (tropics). A must have for Melbourne's crisp winter mornings.

Most menu items are or can be tailored - V, VG or GF which is a necessity these days.
Coffees meet all expectations, with different a roast for coffee variations. Even the most 'coffee precious' will appreciate the balance of coffee-bitter:creaminess.
The atmosphere is light, sunlit, and not at all noisy despite the minimalist interior.

Will definitely come back again, and again!
Lucy Lockett fell a little short for me. The venue is a gorgeous space, but music a little too loud. The staff didn't seem to be working together well and we felt a little hassled during our visit. I had the falafel dish which all in all was just ok. There wasn't enough liquid with the dish to stop it being dry. Wasn't disappointed, but wasn't left wanting to return. A few tweaks here and there and maybe it could be amazing...

Fritters were good but I was very impressed by my friends pancakes. Next time I'm going the pancakes. I would like to come back when the sun is out and take advantage of their outdoor area.

Went here last weekend for breakfast and it's exactly what I'm after on a Sunday.

The staff are friendly, the tables large and the set up nice.

Eggs cooked to perfection and the coffee was really delicious.

Only a short review this time though I will return.

Smashed avocado with a poached egg, mint and beetroot was in the cards for today's visit. Very well presented and taste as it looked ..... Great!
I'm sure I'll be back😊
Back again and you really haven't disappointed coffee is even better this time round! Your breakfast boards are just great.
Affogato Addiction
The revamped vego focused menu is great, modular so that you can top it with bacon or trout if desired for omnivores.

B*tch peas, $19, delicious and a very generous serving.

Affogato was great, $4.50

(2019)

----

Good affogato, $4.9. Great pastry options.

Friendly staff.

(2018)

---
Great brunch spot. Minimal decor, can get quite loud inside. Interesting menu. Crumpets dish ($16) very tasty, nut butter plus jelly plus bacon, could have done without the choc crumb and marshmallow as sometimes less is more.
(2016)

Yummmmm. Just yum. Gingerbread pancakes were a little dry until I realised thats what the maple butter was for, then yum. The chicken burger was crunchy and cheese, again yum!!
Good coffee and good juices. Wait staff were also friendly.

I have been to Lucy Lockett once on a week day and it was very quiet lovely environment to be in. I had their acai bowl and it was very delicious and very filling. Their service is great and their prices are well thought out.
I have however drive past on weekends and this place gets very very...

Been here a few times over the past few months. Food is always good. Space is smart with clean lines. Coffee is well made. but i must say i never drink the soda water. Upon this visit I had the chicken burger which was woow. Big. Tasty. Sweet potato chips were great -perhaps the kiwi in me- also the salmon with the sweet spot egg. 62degrees i believe. Was good. The salmon a little unevenly cooked. It happens. The one real gripe was 35 minutes for a takeaway coffee. The place is generally busy i know, but 35mins. However very nice choice for brunch or lunch. Certainly try Lucy Lockett if you're in the neighborhood or just go there.

Lucy Lockett has been gradually developing over the last 18 months into a thriving suburban cafe, just off Lygon Street in Brunswick East. When we visited it was a beautiful day, with plenty of people choosing to sit outside and enjoy the coffee in the sunshine. It’s been a cafe that’s been finished gradually, making it an odd mix of charmingly adorned and oddly sparse. Lucy Lockett had really developed since our last take-away and seems like it will keep growing and improving as time goes by. We found the service to be relatively prompt, and polite with our being overly friendly. We started with our usual order of lattes. They had a nice flavour and complexity and an attempt had been made at latte art.
