Review Maddox Licensed Cafe & Bar - Brunswick

David Carullo
Fantastic Mocha Coffee and homemade banana bread. Superb customer service. Great value. Definitely good back.
Pippa Mcewen
I had a tastey banana bread! I also had a great experience with a blonde curly haired stuff member! Lovely chat and great service, would recommend 10/10
hannah bambra
One of the best coffees I’ve had in ages. Heaps of vegan and vegetarian options.
Taj Cook
Their egg and bacon roll is delicious highly recommended staff friendly I met a waitress named lulu and she was lovely.
Ronald Koo
The new owner has really lifted this place and I have been here a few times so far. Best coffee on this side of Brunswick (the filters are great). Food is delish and a relaxed lowkey vibe.
Alona Elijah
Absolutely loved the service we received here, the food was also delicious and would recommend everyone to visit the bathroom for the artwork! Great place for brunch!
Buket Bilici
Outstanding coffee. It is so good that I am writing this review with my coffee in hand. Great work not easy to make a coffee this good. We have tried both regular milk an soy. Excellent!!!
Linda Dao
Good vibe cafe. Service was alright. Saw the staff took a pie with his bare. I told him you should have use a thong instead. He said sorry. But I felt like my feedback hasnt been taken yet.
Leila Parker
I did enjoy my lunch last week. Staffs and food are great and very economical. Coffee is a must.
Sarah Lugg
Awesome food, great service, busy on the weekends, lots of space during the week, great for a catch up.
Maureen Ludlow
The food was good and reasonably priced. My poached egg was cooked exactly as I wanted. The staff are very friendly and courteous. The cafe has a good vibe.
Rachel Ray
Great food and staff! Lots of options including vegan and gluten free
Max Mews
Everything here is good. The breakfast trifle makes me die, the staff are so great and the coffee is out of control.
Pe Kanbeei Gomez
As a Barista of many years, I can absolutely say "the coffee was amazing", awesome Barista! The food was amazing, will definitely come back. Thank u for such great hospitality
Paul Gavin
The salmon and avocado is delicious. I own my own home so it's okay to eat avocado.
Faye Mazza
We really enjoyed our Fathers Day brunch with my family. Food was yummy, atmosphere was pleasant, great service.
Kyle Campbell
Great food, run by great people, the specials are always amazing as is everything else on the menu
Natasha Close
Highly recommended, great service, amazing consideration for my little daughter, definitely coming back
Caley Zingerle
Best coffee around, she is an absolute master on that machine! I am there practically every day lately and the staff are always incredible, and the food is delicious. :-)
Ciaran Ardren
Have been meaning to get in forever, finally made it in and demolished a manwich: absolute cracker! The hotcakes are absolutely delicious too.
Stefan Nott
easily the best caffeine on sydney road :)
Karina
Really nice server!!! Great value for money and food was so tasty 🥰🥰
Adrian Montana
Very unimpressed! A simple table order of a few coffees arrived in dribs and drabs over 35 minutes. Five uncoordinated staff behind the counter. An untrained Barista. An extremely cold and unapologetic owner. This place has gone down hill and is not recommended by our family.
Food Boi
Had an $8 Chinese pancake w/ egg, lettuce, pulled pork, siracha and kewpie.. only a special, but I hope they have it more often because it was so cheap and SO DELICIOUS!!

Classical music playing in the background, it’s a good place to do some work. The atmosphere is very peaceful. The food is well presented and tasty, but there is nothing special about it.
Jodie Woodburn
We came in for a coke, a wine and a milkshake. It took 20 minutes for all three to arrive and the place wasn’t even half empty. We were served piping hot glasses straight from the washer. This is a pet peeve for me, just rinse them under the cold tap. Terrible terrible service- many much nicer places in Sydney Rd. Avoid!

Yum!
I’m doing a 5 day yoga workshop close by and needed to grab some lunch. Maddox was the first place I came to and I ordered the portobello mushroom burger. OMG! It was SO yummy.

The café is lovely. A quiet, intimate, little place with cute bits and pieces of bric a brac here and there around the place. The music is quiet, gentle and soothing and the staff are friendly and chatty.

And I just got my coffee. It’s good. Strong, good temperature for drinking... maybe a little bitter for my taste but nothing a tiny dash of extra sugar can’t fix.

All in all a very enjoyable experience.

I just wanted to add that I went back to Maddox twice more. Same great service every time. Smiling happy staff. And the coffee was perfect. I think the little bit of bitterness in the first cup I had must have been a glitch. 😊

This is an older style cafe on Brunswick street. There are some table and seats at the front and in the back of the shop too.

The service was ok. I ordered a piccolo latte for $3.80c. My latte was good but too hot to drink straight away but overall this was pretty good.

Not much more to say really lol.
David Campbell
A very disappointing breakfast at Maddox this morning. The food was delicious, however, I was very disappointed with the service. The staff were unfriendly and very disorganised. It took quite a while to be served even though the cafe was not busy. I ordered a coffee with my breakfast and even after a polite reminder I still didn’t receive it. It wasn’t until I was paying my bill that the staff member remembered the coffee and offered it to me in a take-away cup. Very disappointing.

Clean Ambiance and classic design.

Love their customer service hospitality except the quantity and standard of the ingredients cooked for the price.

Just give a try if you can afford.
MeaganJaye
Stumbled across this place today and was so surprised! Such a cute little place with lovely music in the back round! The food tastes amazing and looks beautiful! They put effort into the presentation and doesn’t go unnoticed lovely staff as well! 100% will be back amazing value and many things I need to try!

A little cafe in Sydney, we came to check out the hotcakes they looked really good on the social mediaand we weren't not disappointed, it was nice and tasty coffee was good as well. recommended when you are in the area 😄
Soymilkisagoodbeverage
wide menu with an interesting selection - the rosti had a well-meditated mix of flavours and the hot sauce added a nice kick to it. bf had scrambled eggs - simple but done brilliantly - which was a generous amount for a good price. coffee was good and strong. staff were lovely and attentive. sat outside since it was a bit loud inside, but interior was cosy, bright and modern.

-------
01/06/19 edit: shoutouts to kelvin, one of the friendliest and on-the-ball baristas in brunswick i've met. love ya work, kelvin

Had breakfast here and found it to be quite delicious! The coffee was good, the food was very tasty, the portions were decent and the waitstaff were attentive and polite. I remember having lunch here a couple of years ago and it was very nice then so all good really - no complaints here and I'll definitely go there again. I thought it was maybe a dollar or two on the pricey side but the food really was pretty good and my girlfriend and I rolled out of there as full as can be.

Another cafe run by a group of guys in Brunswick. Food was well seasoned and had large windows so that it was well lit. Think there was a back area seating too.
Andy
Maddox has a relaxed and chilled type of atmosphere and is situated towards the city end of Sydney Road. Our dishes were prepared quickly and presented very nicely. Coffee is quality with ample meal sizes at very reasonable prices. A dainty cafe with a hip kind of vibe!
Jess
Loved it! Staff are very friendly and amusingly excited (new venture?), reasonably priced and delicious.
The coffee is sublime and perfectly well rounded in flavour.
I had the pulled pork sandwich/burger which I thought was well and reasonably priced, delicious apple slaw on it.
Beautiful vintage industrial decor very pleasant to be in.
I knew the previous incarnation of this place when it was a punk home style kitchen, and while I really miss them I'm pleased to see this new quality offering on the street

I remembered liking Maddox when I came for brekky about 2 years ago. After a short trip to Savers, we came to Maddox for afternoon tea. The first I noticed was they started introducing dumplings on the board outside the door. Next thing I noticed was the lack of healthy house made cakes options (vegan, gluten free) which they used to serve. I went for the chai latte and my parter ordered the flat white, spinach fetta golzeme and almond croissant. Our beverage was quite good. The almond croissant was a bit tiny and lacking feta in the golzeme. The waiter also didn't bring us cutlery and serviette when the food was served to the table.

The allure of colourful hot cakes on their instagram brought me here as I dined with friends. Orders were promptly taken by staff who were friendly and attentive. For drinks this time I ordered a Chai Latte instead of my usual coffee. It tasted strongly of nutmeg with an absence of cinnamon and other spices. I was not able to add sugar as their sugar can had ants crawling in it. I wanted to mention it to the staff but I forgot.
FoodingAroundMelbourne
Very cool place. Variety of menu options ranging from pancakes to eggs on toast to muesli to burgers. Pancakes seem their biggest seller with their instagram feed being overload with pictures of their Pancake specials.
I had "The Rosti" which was good but either needed a slice of toast or another Rosti -the hot sauce was my fave thing on the plate. The man across from us had the chips with smelt Devine.

What I loved most was the stunning raw timber around the counters.
Syaf
I should've ordered the hot cakes cuz they look amazing. Instead I tried their shredded chicken salad dish called lob gai if I'm not mistaken and it was nice, kinda filling but perhaps I chose the wrong dish. My husband had the pork burger and said it was amazing. Coffee was good too. I will still come back to try other stuff.

Customer service !! Number one
Was having a terrible day until i walked in !
And wow what a beautiful fresh chicken snitzel butger i ordered
Will definitely be back

This place has such great vibes and super friendly staff!! The waiter tried to guess our orders and was surprised that we weren't ordering any of their usual favourites... Guess our choices were unconventional! The service was fast and dishes came out very quickly. Coffee is very nice and good customer service and waiter really patience for us, they give our free sample, it's really delicious.we get special juice today with my friend as well, All of the dishes we ordered were really refreshing, but food worth to waiting.I'll be coming back with my friend :)
Antoinette
This was potentially the worst breakfast I've experienced this year. The meals came out staggered over 30 minutes meaning everyone's meals were cold by the time we could all start eating. The last egg dish to arrive was raw and inedible not to mention the Meredith goats cheese that was meant to come with one of the dishes, was clearly not Meredith goats cheese and it was less than one cube for $4... see photo. All in all, considering the competition in the area this place is simply disappointing.

Dec'16 update - went again with some friends. Service wasn't as good this time, but probably was just that one waitress. Took matcha latte this time which wasn't on the menu. Had the Morrocon salad which was nice but could have done with some more pieces of plum.

Nov'16 - Had to chose a place in Brunswick for brunch. Looked at which spots had good reviews AND where I hadn't been yet. Maddox cafe was where we went. The cafe had good service and a nice atmosphere. We sat by the window, which is great for people watching. I had the mushrooms. It was a nice dish, but I did not like the chickpea chips, they were a bit bland. I read about the matcha latte on here, so asked about that. Then the barista told me he invented an orange chai latte and he reckoned it was better than the matcha latte, so I took that and it was indeed very nice. The orange flavour is very subtle which was nice. Wouldn't mind going back again and trying something else.

Another good find along the busy street. We went there on a Friday morning for lunch and ordered their dish on the special menu of the day. Food was really good and well balanced, will definitely come back again!
J0yy173
Indecision reigned despite the small menu with so many appealing options, but eventually settled on the mushrooms. The babaganoush gives a middle eastern flavour to a dish of wholesome ingredients. Love the chickpea chips! Service was a bit slow as it wasn't busy and the hot chocolate a little too watery for my liking, but still a good vibe and successful experiment.

Had a great brekkie again at maddox. The staff are friendly and the food is delish. Highly recommend. Had the big brekkie, dont know what they put in the relish but its amazing!

Visited here on the weekend with two girlfriends and had an interesting experience. We had a lovely table out the back and the place has such a homely vibe. When the waiter came over I asked if one of the specials was gluten free, to which he responded "oh yeah, it would be", but I realised the croquettes would potentially have flour so I asked him to check with the chef. He did, and lo and behold it wasn't gf. If I hadn't pushed him to check I could have been in some serious pain post breakfast. I decided to go with the black rice bircher which I was so excited to try but was left bitterly disappointed. The menu stated it came with coconut cream but when I had a mouthful of my bircher I almost couldn't swallow it. I had my friends taste it also and they were as put off as I was, it did not taste like coconut cream! Maddox were lovely enough to make another one without that on the top which I ate but was left saying that my homemade black rice porridge is nicer than this one (eek sorry). Maybe it's just my taste preferences but I won't be back.

Overall I was pretty happy with brunch at Maddox. The salad I had was fine, needed more lamb though. The drinks seemed overpriced, even for a cafe. The service was very good, no problems with that at all.
FroggyLegs
Excellent food and service. Would be happy to go back. Loved the pancetta and eggs on sourdough. The caper dressing made the dish so delicious.
Emma Heidi
Good food, great coffee (in my top 3 in Brunswick right now - consistently good too). I hope they never get rid of the hot cake special. Topping changes all the time and it's always good. Best thing on the menu at the moment is the mushrooms with 'chickpea chips'. Amazing. Fairly standard options otherwise but I've never been disappointed. Had the chai latte today and it was the best ever!
The whole section out the back is great. I'm always disappointed if I have to sit in the front. You feel really exposed and squished in way too close to strangers. Happy staff which is always a good sign that they're probably treated well.

Just one thing... I have a weird bone to pick about the art. It used to have some stuff that looked like it might be local then one day they changed it to these godawful silver and red flower paintings. At the time I thought 'well, I guess they're supporting local artists and this is just a bunch that's not to my taste'. Then I walked up the street and saw that they're actually from the local $2 shop. This is such a bad choice. They have this beautiful space that a ton of local artists would kill to display their work in. It actually feels like they're shirking a local responsibility and making their cafe look cheap and dodgy while they're at it. If you're a local artist maybe go offer to display your work. Save us all from this $2 shop travesty!

2017
Noticed that has changed of management/ ownership, was planned to visit here for the peanut butter hot cake.

Ended up to try other dishes, the potato rosti was crispy outside, soft inside, but only 1 piece.

Luckily the taste of the food still keep up with the standard.

2016
Matcha latte with maple syrup, yummm...not too sweet, the maple syrup lift up the matcha taste, great combination.

Peanut butter hot cake with banana, yummm... Like the slightly caramelised banana, the hot cake was very soft and fluffy, peanut butter sauce with some crunchy texture elements, not quite sure was caramel or peanut or something else, great taste, one of the best hot cake combination that I ever had, highly recommended.

The mushrooms with feta cheese and chickpeas chip, great combination as well, very special chickpeas chip, soft inside but slightly crunchy. Perfectly cooked egg, york was still runny inside.

Small little kitchen space but managed to cook quality food, great ventilation system considered for small shop space and kitchen was located at the middle of the shop.

The coffee is good, the environment is cozy, but the food is... No comments😅 I can make the food by myself easily, don't think I will be back again

I'm usually more of a lunch/dinner person and didn't have brunch for a while already but this place needs to be on your "eat-out bucketlist"! Had the "Big Deal" breakfast, which comes with super crispy bacon, haloumi cheese and heaps of other goodness on a plate. Of course accompanied the brunch with coffee which tasted smooth and balanced - so I had to order a second. Overall a fantastic dining institution with a well priced menu!
Ramen_Girl
Great quality coffee. My favourite Brunny cafe for an amazing chai. Awesome vibe, friendly staff. Breakfasts are pretty awesome too. Not the hugest breakfast menu, but high quality. A pleasant place to visit for a meal or coffee.
Received menu, salivating!! that’s the only way to describe me after looking at all this food porn.
I love to eat breakfast, it’s the best meal of the day as far as I’m concerned, brunch, eggs, healthy breakfasts, greasy breakfasts, I’m not fussy.

My only trouble is what to choose…
If there is one thing I love, maybe more than most, it’s pancakes they’re perfect for any meal breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert sweet or savoury

That golden exterior combined with the soft and fluffy interior makes for quite the meal

my server was incredible and was always attentive and friendly. Overall, I would say I’m a fan and if you love pancakes, Maddox probably has one of the best in Melbourne
David Facciolo
Really nice and relaxing cafe with a easy breakfast menu and great quality coffee. Embodies a great local feel with a relaxed feel partnered with a simple and quality breakfast.
Melbournemunch
Such a lovely and inviting cafe! Caught up for a coffee with a friend. Coffee was great & service was very friendly.

Will definitely be back to try their food!
Crispymelbreview
Another cool place to pass the day on Sydney Rd, Brunswick with consistently good coffee and cool background music.
Can't wait to try the menu, especially the hotcakes.
Katie Daisy
Excellent staff but very average food. All 6 of us were very disappointed. Love that it's easy to swap to a vegetarian or vegan option but won't be coming back after this below average meal in such a competitive industry.
Gastrology
Maddox Café stands out from the crowd in Melbourne's competitive and crowded cafe scene with delicious and modern brunch offerings. An all-day breakfast and lunch café in the heart of Sydney Road, the café prides itself in using the freshest seasonal produce to create an ever-changing menu bursting with modern flavours. Not surprisingly, it is a popular hangout choice amongst locals and certainly a café worth making the trip to visit for the rest of us.
Maddie Clare
I love this place! It's easy to miss which makes it a little less hectic, away from the weekend brunch madness. The tuscan eggs and ricotta pancakes are my favourite. The coffee and cake options are highly recommended too. Will be back.
BrunchQueen
The hot cakes were to die for! So nice and full of flavour and absolutely loved the passion fruit yogurt on top. I wish I could of finished it all, was so filling!!
Em Belden
There's a place on Sydney road that sits quietly as busy punters drive past, you could miss it in a blink of an eye, but you would be truly mad not to stop in. Maddox Cafe located almost adjustment to the Aldi or the Retreat, with its large glass window grasping the morning sunshine. Quaint and relaxing this small cafe is truly going to deliver some perfect coffees and delicious meals on your visit.
Rachel L
Cute place on Sydney Rd. This cafe has such a great vibe, I really love going there. The coffee is great and the service is so warm. Upon paying one day the barista offered us a smoothie she was working on to ask us our opinion, it was a nice touch to a really sweet little place.
Em Belden
What a lovely and friendly cafe. Gorgeous design with fresh flowers lightening the rich wooden tables, upbeat but not in your face music and great service.
The food is delicious and fresh making for a very enjoyable start to my day
The Critic's Critic
Good food, good staff, good fit out! One of Sydney Road's better cafes! It's very evident there's a lot of love put into this cafe. Every time I have been here, I have enjoyed both the consistent quality of the coffee and food!
Chocmousse
Met some girlfriends for breakfast today, the coffee was first rate-fantastic! I had the scrambled eggs, they were flavoursome and light and absolutely delicious. One of my friends had the granola which was gorgeous on the plate and she loved every last bite. Overall a great experience.
Jasmine
😡 Valentine's Day lunch was a total let down, horrible! What they post on Instagram is not what they serve. + Waiting for food was so long. I ordered smoked salmon dish and I got 4 pieces of cooked salmon, the special pandan hot cakes have no taste at all. We complained about the salmon and they said that's smoked salmon (in my photo) and we are wrong. 👏🏻 If I knew that I didn't order that dish for around $20.
Customer service is 0. The food is 1 out of 10.
Zoe Joune Klemenczuk
Sydney rd has many cafe options. But why I choose to go to Maddox? The coffee, food, service, the sweets and the interior. I love seeing a cafe get creative with a menu and the specials they have make me feel like the most indecisive person in the universe. The only bad thing is that it is shut on my day off. But I highly recommend it.
Lil Miss Vegan
Recently added some extra vegan options to the menu and they are delicious! The moroccan salad is one of the tastiest salads I have had. Not a piece of limp lettuce in sight! Farro with herbs, raisins, beetroot, cauliflower and smoky babaganoush. Yum! The black rice with coconut cream and fruit is another light option. There is also a mushroom dish. The staff are super friendly, and place feels like a cozy little home with awesome artwork. Also a nice selection of cakes at the counter with atleast one vegan option.
Brew Hunter
I enjoyed the Moroccan breakfast salad with smoked Beetroot and babganoush whilst my sister tried the black rice Bircher with coconut cream and fresh fruit. The food is plated tremendously with much care and is packed full of flavour. The staff are really friendly with great service and the coffee is good to. Would defiantly come back some time soon.
Waleedelbaz74
We were looking farwad to having brekky at moddox cafe as we saw some awasome photos in on instagram, so we ordered smoked salmon and the mushrooms plus the hotcake.Unfortunately, we were disappointed, the salmon with riccota was flavourless, its was more of a sandwich than a dish. The mushrooms was bland.the hot cake it didn't taste as good as it looks or our expectation was may be high. However, The servies was great and staff were attentive.
Inlovewithbrunch
it’s not often you can boast about being on the site of the very first café in a suburb. a whilst the name and owners may have changed from ‘kaleidoscope’ to a few other iterations, and even housed a chocolate shop for some time since… the history lingers on in the 100-year old building at 295 sydney road in brunswick that ‘maddox’ now calls home.
Taniacandido
I had the black rice Bircher for breakfast on a Saturday morning around 10ish. My food was nice, it was different and I liked that the cafe are kind of health conscious. It had toasted coconut and fresh seasonal fruit. The portion size was quite big and filling. I also had a chai latte, which wasn't the best but my boyfriend's hot chocolate was pretty amazing. The staff are friendly and positive - they seemed really happy to be there and were welcoming.
Lachlan Chan
Walked into this cosy restaurant where we were seated up the back. It was comfortable little two seater. The service was very good. Ended up ordering the Tuscan eggs and the hot cakes: flavour blueberries which were scrumptious at around $34 all up. The eggs were pretty good but not super spectacular although the mix of goats cheese, pancetta, tomato and rocket flavours was a great mix. Definitely recommend: 8/10. The hot cakes were cooked to perfection and the fruits added a nice touch: 8/10. However the lovely waitress offered us a complimentary pannacotta as they were offering it the next day and they made a tester and gave it to us which just made the visit special. The pannacotta was cooked to perfection, pretty good for a tester, the mix of biscuit crumble on the bottom, custard mixture in the middle and the passionfruit jelly top was delicious: 10/10. Overall this visit was a 9/10 as the food was excellent and the service was top notch. Would come back here if we wanted to splurge on a breakfast again

Went here on weekend to try the gorgeous blueberry hotcake. The hotcake tastes amazing, decent price and portion, absolutely love! Tried the tuscan eggs and its great too.

Located on Sydney Road, Maddox is an understated little café housed in one of the pretty old shopfronts that line this busy street. The leadlight front windows are in stark contrast to the exposed brick interior which is styled with recycled timber and industrial pendant lights. Walking past the timber counter, we took a seat in the charming backroom, which was a more refined space than the entrance, with a large restored timber staircase, open fire place and some really eye catching artwork furnishing the walls.
Frenchtoastandindiepop
Among the litany of cafes on Sydney Road you’ll find Maddox. It’s a charming little cafe with some older and more modern touches. The front room opens out into a larger back room with a wonderful staircase wrapping around its edges. There’s some art and furnishing with just a bit of character. We loved the roughed up feel, it’s old school charm that makes us feel right at home. It would once have been a delightful house. We started with lattes. We’ve had nice coffees here previously but this one was too hot and borderline over extracted. A shame really! We also tried the more unusual peanut butter hot chocolate. It was rich, creamy and full of flavour. Not to mention being served with peanut m&ms you could dunk or simply eat. If you’re keen for a unique hot chocolate this may be exactly what you’re looking for! We started our meal with a light granola. It was served with a mix of fruits, including strawberry, apricots and fig. The granola itself didn’t have much flavour but it was wonderful with a mouthful of everything and comfortably filling. We also went for the passion fruit hot cake special. What we loved about this dish was that these were what you always hope you will get when you order hot cakes. They were large, browned and soft without succumbing to a doughy centre or simply being large pancakes. This was a very sweet dish, predominantly a tart sweetness and more of the creamy yogurt would have created a better balance. The presentation was pretty and delicate.

Great little place! The food was delicious
Blueberry hotcakes with banana maple syrup 😍 delicious! And the Morocco breakfast salad was fresh and full of flavour. The passionfruit lime bitters was also delicious! Tastes like a jazzed up version of sprite.
Love this place 😊

Last Friday the State Government of Victoria were at its most popular. Why? The introduction of the new Grand Final Day public holiday had Victorians celebrating a sweet hurray. Never mind the football. It’s an extra day to soak in the sunshine and fit in an extra day of brunch. Maddox is a Brunswick favourite lighting up the otherwise dingy suburb, fast forward a few years and Sydney Road is now a cool kids hang out, likened to Fitzroy and Collingwood. Refitted from scratch by Perth couple Marsha Salam and Brendon James, Maddox is

Lamb salad special here was lovely. it came with candied figs which complemented the lamb well. Lamb was cooked well and seasoned to perfection. The hotcakes here were very good. Thick and fluffy, definitely worth another visit!

Maddox quickly became my go-to when I am in Melbourne, I actually feel disloyal when I go anywhere else. The food is unlike anywhere else, you'll want to try everything. The menu does change seasonly, whilst it can be hard to say goodbye to your favourites, they always add something equally, if not more, delicious. Not only that, the service and the food are impeccable. Maddox is a coffee lover's idea of heaven. You are spoilt for choice on Sydney Rd, but make Maddox your next stop and I promise you won't be disappointed.
Hello. Imnikki
My partner went into a foodgasm while eating his manwich. That manwich was enough for him to plan a next visit back to Maddox and I am in total agreement. My dish of Arabian eggs was delightful; the spicy labneh was the highlight of the dish, pairing so well with the eggs and onions. Was lucky to grab a PB Nutella doughnut for $1 too as it was late in the day when we visited.

Maddox is a perfect brekkie destination located amongst many cafes in Brunswick! Maddox has the tastiest poached eggs, our fave brekkie are the Tuscan Eggs! Be sure to look into the deserts cabinet by the till for some deciduous Vegan treats or grab some salted caramel fudge for quick sugar fix! The owners and staff are just delightful and extremely welcoming! Highly reccomend and we will be back!

Cute little place offering your standard cafe food. The bacon & scrambled egg focaccia's were fresh, reasonably priced and tasty.. The chorizo round bun was also tasty but a small for the price. We didn't order the breakfast but it looked really good.

Service was a bit below average - one of the waitresses brought other dirty plates to our table so she could stack our dirty plates on top. Some of dirty cutlery then dropped onto our table and some onto the floor. What a farce.

I haven't eaten here as yet ,but did purchase coffee on two occasions and must say if they serve food anything like their Coffee I'm heading back very soon. I'm a short mac lover and a very fussy one, the staff at Maddox on both occasions made the perfect drop .As a manic coffee lover I rate this place well on top of the list.
Called in for midweek brekky. Great choice. Tuscan Eggs and good coffee. Nice feel and friendly staff. Love the decor. Pick of the cafes in the area.

I decided to check out Maddox for lunch after reading about it in 'The Specialty Coffee Book: Victoria' and really enjoyed it. My friend got the Larb Gai and claimed it was delicious (despite leaving the chilli because she couldn't handle the heat!) and I ordered the brisket salad which was perfect. The beef was soft and pulled apart easily and I found the mulberries a pleasantly sweet addition. The long macchiato was just what I needed at that time of the day! I recommend Maddox to anyone down this part of Sydney Road.
Dos Delish
Friendly staff, great food. Great little spot to stop for a quick Sydney Road lunch. Manwich was a highlight and the fries were great.
Dublinese
Amazing. Had the special beef cheek with chickpea chips it was so amazing. Really friendly staff here.

Yes, you're spoilt for choice in this part of town, but make Maddox your first port of call. Great coffee, and the cakes are extraordinary:) highly recommended
Emma
Delicious! Came here for Brekky/Lunch and it was an excellent choice! I had the Tuscan Eggs which were so good! Poached eggs with pancetta rocket and goats cheese.. It was amazing! Reasonably priced and plenty more things to try - I'll be back!
R.tharle
Great Advocado & Salmon dish. Had this this morning I was hungry and it hit the spot healthy and delicious. With a really good coffee. Next time I'll try the fruity desert with flowers.
Annina Nowak
Disappointed. I ordered a soy latte take away, it took 15 minutes and they weren't overly busy (it was a Tuesday at 10am) it cost $4.40 for a small, and I stared at the lady in shock as she put the lid on my coffee which wasn't even filled to the top (about 1cm short of the rim). It was good coffee and usually I wouldn't say anything, but being that expensive I wasn't expecting to wait that long and then not even have a full cup.
Keziah Gillam
They do everything right. Maddox just gets it right - friendly, accomodating staff, excellent coffee, innovative specials, fresh and interesting food that's promptly delivered and an off the hook sweets cabinet with an amazing selection all created in-house. If you want a place for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or take-away coffee, then this place is your best bet. Great atmosphere and fit-out, which is welcoming to the whole spectrum of people that wander Brunswick. In an ever expanding cafe district, Maddox is the cream rising to the top.

Ok coffee average service. Coffee is ok but the service for take away coffee is very very average! Ordered a take away coffee and was instructed by staff to wait outside for it as we were 'in the way', as a paying customer I should be allowed to wait inside like everyone else. If you are going to serve take away coffee you should at least have somewhere for people to wait. The 15 min wait for the coffee meant that I had time to write this review!!!! Will be looking for a new coffee shop now!
Delicious
Unless you want a $5 take-away cold coffee, don't bother.

Amazing Place. To Dee,

I was in there today as well and got the most amazing service from the blonde girl - I overheard and I think her name was Ella?

I hope your review wasn't referring to her as she was absolutely amazing - nothing was a trouble and we thoroughly enjoyed our $1 coffee and brownies.

Good food, terrible service. People were served before us, waitress was dismissive when we asked where our food was and blamed it on the kitchen.
luckily my braised beef was nice.
keep the kitchen staff, replace the wait staff!

Extremely average - Not worth a second chance. So reading the reviews I was looking forward to a great brunch here - but sadly, this was not the case. The Coffee had a pleasant finish and I think a rounded flavour, it was fairly weak, so I could have been imagining this. It was not very full for a Saturday so we got a seat easily (a plus, but perhaps also a give away) and service was fine. However the food - my poached eggs where completely hard, the 'thick' cut bacon I couldn't actually get my knife to cut through, and I believe if you can't even cut it, you probably shouldn't eat it. The remaining sides were extremely average and nothing I would order again so I simply can't understand the prior reviews. If I take away these obvious issues and assume everything was edible, the overall experience would still be very mediocre and not worth the effort.

Legit. Love this place. The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is very welcoming. The attention to detail with everything is spot on. Go here for a real coffee and a good breaky or lunch on Sydney Rd ;)

The vegan friendly meal. I'm starting to write reviews as I want the standard, and quantity of vegetarian and vegan friendly places to eat on Sydney Rd to improve. Given the large numbers of vegans and vegetarians in Brunswick, the offerings are much better in Northcote, Fitzroy and Carlton. If someone opened a vegan or vegetarian place on Sydney Rd, my bet is that it would do very well. Maddox gets the thumbs up as it actually has a vegan brunch menu item listed. Most places in Brunswick don't. Asian mushrooms, tofu and greens on roast potatoes, with the option of adding a poached egg if you want to. It was good. Only down side was that for the price, I thought the proportion was quite small. So thanks Maddox for having something vegan on the menu. If you keep improving and make the portions bigger I will be back.

Sydney Road treat. A lovely Brunswick local just opposite Aldi supermarket on Sydney Road ( just a quick tram trip away), you will find Maddox Cafe. Wonderful warm hospitality serving delicious coffee and some amazing dishes from the petite and talented kitchen. A changing variety of Hotcakes are making their way onto the scene ... see photo ... delish. Some interesting and delicious homemade biscuits and cakes always available ... highly recommend :) We love your work Maddox team :)

-----10 Apr, 2014-----

Great coffee, food and vibe. Brunswick demonstrates another gem. Great coffee, tastee food with flair, and genuine hospitality.

We went there for the first time on Sunday for brunch . The service was exceptional and the food pretty good as well. It's really worth giving it a try if you're in Sydney Road

Delicious food, amazing coffee and great service, not only were we after a vegan & vegetarian option which they had plenty of, the chef came out and made something to suit what we were after. Deffinetly recommend

Must try brunch. Maddox is one of my regular brunch destinations. I love the salmon and avocado with ricotta. The staff are just lovely. The glass cabinet is always stuffed with unusual tasty treats and they do a great coffee. I always sit in the cosy back room with it's classic blend of rustic Brunswick architectural features and modern touches.
