Review Alasya Turkish Restaurant - Brunswick

Christina Gangemi
Great value and great food. Meat was so tasty and full of flavour. We ordered one of the banquets for two people and had heaps of food left over to take home. Had the next day and was delicious! Would definitely come back again. Service was good too.

Went on a Saturday night and had a great experience! Affordable, family run venue and lovely service. Kebab meat, home made dips (beetroot dip was a stand out!) and unlimited warm and crispy Turkish bread… what’s not to love??

Delicious and very filling. It took a bit if time but it was soooo worth the wait. The lovely waitress was also very nice and helpful when we couldn't finish our meal.
Two Hungry Diners
Alasya Restaurant is a must-try Turkish Restaurant on Sydney Road in Brunswick! We had an absolute feast when we were there and enjoyed all the tasty food we ordered. Our order: 🥘 Spicy Platter, which consists of: 🥖 Unlimited Turkish bread 🥗 Garden Salad - Dolma - Pilaki - Cacik - Babaganush - Hot & Spiy Dip - Bamya 🥩 Chili Rump Strips - Chilli Chicken Strips | Chicken & Lamb Kofte | Sis Kebab ☕ Turkish Coffee and Dessert The starters were all amazing and really helped set the tone for what about to come. The dips were delicious...the hot & spicy dip was our favourite dip and paired with that unlimited Turkish bread, it's just divine. Dolma & Pilaki are must try too. The meat selections were also very tasty and delicious and we can't go past that Chilli Rump Strips and Sis Kebab - spicy, salty, full of flavour, and the meat was also very tender, absolute bomb! And both Turkish Tea & Coffee plus selection of dessert (they gave us 2 baklavas and 1 coconut biscuit) to close off was also heavenly! Overall, we enjoy eating at this restaurant and can recommend to anyone look for something new to try or explore. The price seems very reasonable too and the service is not bad at all. Definitely going back for some more to try the kebab as we hear some good reviews too.

Great food and lovely friendly staff. Foods delicious and good value for the pocket

Have been coming to Alasya for over 30yrs now and every time it has been a treat. Super flavoursome food and the staff are excellent We now live in rural Vic so have to drive 300km for our favourite Turkish food, well worth the drive.. The waiting staff tonight were brilliant and nothing was too much trouble. Can't wait for our next visit.

The sweets and bread were good. The tomato relish they served with the meat has definitely gone off. Every meat is WELL DONE here. What's the point of eating dry, over burnt, hard meat? I could give 2 or 1 star but don't wanna hurt the business. The sweets and bread were good.

We were here 10 years ago, back then, from memory, it was great food. Been living NSW Sydney, then Canberra for a total of 10 years, came back tonight and was seated at the back of the dining room….. and forgotten.. after 12 minutes my partner got up and grabbed staff and we were moved in closer. Eventually got menu’s and prepped to order. Got our food - relatively quickly so promptness wasn’t an issue, but in all honesty, I’m wondering if we actually thought the food was great 10 years ago or did we have very low standards back then? I’m not being critical regarding the quality of the food but after dinner tonight, I don’t think we’ll be back. It’s definitely not what I remembered it to be. The pricing is relatively cheap so it’s not like it’s outrageous but it was a disappointment with what we received to what we remembered it used to be like.

Awesome place. A variety to choose from the menu. Great place for a late lunch. Good place to experience some Middle Eastern food.

Myself and my family had lunch here today. Was very dissatisfied with the service and the quality of food. We have eaten here on many occasions and it's been great. Plenty of food, usually way to much. Not today we had to order extra. We got banquets and an sure they messed up the order. Anyway never mind we will not be going back. Turkish in Keilor Rd niddrie is heaps better.
Tanya Brnjak
The only positive about the place was the food. We were there last night for a birthday dinner and we waited over an hr for our meals. Had to chase up when the meals were coming out. People either got the wrong meal, missed half their meal or didn't come out. We had to chase it up. The customer service was not present. The staff had no idea what they were doing. I will only go back for takeaway. Will never eat in again.

Have eaten here heaps of times good food great staff one of the best in Sydney road.

Beautiful food and plenty of it ; ample parking; good service; comprehensive menu:)

Sweet pastry was drowning in honey ... had to ask staff twice for bread .. did not advice as how to order our meal .. when arrived had to ask the girl to wipe down the table again as it was completely wet...my parents have owned restaurants... and despite this restaurants family history it needs a lesson about current hospitality etiquette ...

Arrived here for a family birthday lunch, customer service was too slow & not very welcoming.. food was nice though. probably won't come back

The staff were very helpful towards my elderly people i look after and everyone really enjoyed their lunch . Thankyou

Amazing food and fast service!

Great food! Friendly staff. Great atmosphere and reasonably priced!!

I wanted to try their garlic Turkish bread and took 3 breads which were 4$ each , to my surprise a single bread was too big for atleast 2 people to complete it. This is more than worth for the money I paid and I just had with my home made curry which I could say is a perfect combo for anything. They had lot of variety of breads and gozleme and Turkish deserts too. Completely a great experience .

This place is an institution. Always does not disappoint.

10/01/20<br/>Takeaway<br/>Item: yogurtlu chicken doner kebab<br/>The best word to sum up my experience at Alasya is VALUE. The delicious kebab was quickly prepared. What more do you want? I really appreciate that they use Turkish bread in their kebabs, really gives it a hearty taste. If you are in the area looking for a mid night feed, drop by Alasya.

rating 3.5Bought the lamb gozleme for take away, chuck it in the oven for a few minutes. It was crispy and a little chewy. We also had the turkish delight, it was too sweet for us.
Peanuts666
After waiting for over 45 minutes the food was cold and bland, it’s overpriced the staff are rude. I can’t stress this enough this place is HORRIBLE if it was possible to give it a minus star rating I would!

Our go to when on Sydney Rd. The restaurant is spacious, the food is always consistent, tasty and the portion sizes are great! Very family friendly.

It’s been a long time between visits and not much has changed! The food is good, the prices are good but the decor is, well, the same as ever.... old.<br/>we had dips (disappointingly there’s no mixed dips available), a mixed meat plate, a salad and a doner and yoghurt plate... bread is a small bit extra these days but unlimited and yummy!<br/>Five of us spent $60 and walked out full and content.<br/>For good old school Turkish, this is still a great place to go!

I’ve been to Alasya several times now and each visit has been increasingly disappointing. Tonight was Mother’s Day and it was by far my worst (and most likely last) visit. The waiters forgot my main (the mixed grill), brought us the wrong desserts and managed to smack my mum in head with a tray not once but twice. Thankfully we still had a good time but it was no thanks to Alasya.

I took the kids, and I have 5 kids, for lunch few days ago. <br/>We use to go there in the past. Any way things has not changed. The chips were uncooked. The lamb of the spit was over cooked. They used to give bread for free, now they charge for the bread. And when I wanted to pay with a debit card they wanted to charge me a percentage. And that got me mad. I went to get cash from an ATM. IN simple words. Never go there again
Matt
A step back in time to the late seventies. Nothing is offensive but nothing is really inspired. Advantages here are the massive number of seats, long opening hours and the bread. The rest is a bit average. Very Sydney Road.
RAJEEV GULATI
Good thing about this place is wide variety of authentic Lebanese dishes available at reasonable prices till 4am in morning for late night hunger. Bad thing is most of these taste average with few optionally better...<br/><br/>The breads and doner roll is good.<br/><br/>The dips, meats, dolma etc. is average.<br/><br/>The desserts like Baklava etc. is real bad.<br/><br/>We got the food packed for takeaway... so cannot comment on their service. However the girls at cash counter were not courteous whereas the chef was very friendly and eager to serve.
Chewynoms
The Turkish coffee is pretty good! It's different compared to the normal melbourne coffee. I love this more tbh. haha.<br/><br/>Got the sweets and the baklava tasted average, not as flaky and fragrant from Balha's haha. The stuffed turkish delight was really a delight! Chewy and not overly sweet.<br/><br/>Will be back to try more of the sweets. hehe
SohzFoodTrail
I visited Alasya after seeing the reviews. It was worth it and totally authentic Turkish place bustling with people. The ambiance is next door, large specious and regular. The staffs are busy, large menu of food.<br/>We orders the chicken shis and lamb kofte. The food took time to be served and I must admit the taste is heavenly. Very well marinated, filling and fresh. That justifies the time taken. I will recommend this place to everyone.<br/>Will surely visit again.

I used to frequent Alasya more than twenty years ago when I lived on that side of town. A return visit revealed visually not a lot has changed since then! The decor seems much the same and expansion to adjoining shops is obvious, however, the main element, their food, is still really, really good. They have been in Sydney Road since 1978 providing diners with fantastic, fresh Turkish fare which says a lot!
Stu
We came here for dinner the other night and had a great (and large) meal. The restaurant has a no-frills look which is fine given that the food is good. The dishes are great for sharing so I would recommend this for a group booking or if you find it difficult to select a single dish. I would definitely come back.

This one used to be good but not anymore. Place was deserted. Food was expensive and most of it didn’t taste nice compared to other Turkish places.

Just had lunch here for the first time and we are not impressed. Customer service was not great, waitress was not polite and seemed almost bothered by our presence. <br/><br/>We ordered 2x mixed grills and 2 servings of rice, all of which was mediocre. Mince was burnt and chicken shish was definitely not freshly cooked (seemed reheated) + the entire dish was unnecessarily oily. Nonetheless, we still ordered dessert to take with us and the baklava was very disappointing! <br/><br/>Aside from the waitress that served us, the restaurant has a nice feel to it and is decorated nicely. What could have been a great experience was let down by poor customer service and mediocre food.
Mr Belly Jelly
Used to come here years ago when passing by. The restaurant and the food hasn't changed since forever. Had a mixed doner kebab which are still on the gigantic side and and packed to the brim with meat and salad. Not bad for $10 but at what cost? A few hours after eating it I had to run to the toilet several times and it wasn't pleasant. Dunno if it was the meat, salad or sauces or a combination of all of them, but something was definitely off.
YesNoMelbourne
Yes/no? Yes!!!<br/><br/><br/>Honestly what can I say, Turkish folks are yet to let me down <br/>The moment I walked in, the smell of the meat just made me full of joy <br/><br/>The fresh Turkish bread, the tender meat, the spices, the beautiful sauces and the great atmosphere in combination made a perfect dish! <br/>My dad used to go here like 30 years ago and it’s still amazing <br/><br/>Would definitely recommend
Yumyumfoodyum
Tasty, cheap and open late. Go with a group of mates and order up big. We did and it was less than $30 each. The fresh Turkish bread is amazing and the meats are tasty, especially the lamb sis. The babaganoush is super smooth and smoky, order a big one! Alasya hasn’t changed in years, and is still going strong.
Kendall.phillips
First time here - amazing food and fast service, great value for money too! We had the dips, delicious! Bread was always refilled, fresh warm and soft. The meat was delicious too! Will be back for sure!
Bensuemacdar
Had a birthday party with 40 guests fed with the set menu + 1 vegan + 1 veg. Closed one section off for us. Allowed byo all drinks. Very reasonable price. Staff extremely attentive and provided us access to fridges plus cake serving. <br/><br/>Great venue and cuisine for this kind of function.
Josh Andres
We ordered vegetarian delight, the mixed grill, and some dips (babaganush, humus, ajwar) everything was amazingly delicious - the only thing I would do different is replace the ajwar dip as it's really hot and does not have its own flavour (basically a chilli sauce). Service was excellent, and the style of the place is relaxed and vintage (which is perfect).
George David Michaelides
Wow has not changed in 25 years! maybe even more? <br/>I found the meat to be a little dry and of lower quality here than say compared to Tibas down the road. The four cheese golzeme was a highlight of the day however, do try it!
Fernanda Penso
The food didn’t have any flavour... the hummus was boring, the babaganouj wasn’t good.. <br/><br/>nothing special... for 25$pp.. <br/>It was a deception for us!

We were craving a HSP which wasn’t on the menu but they still served it, with lamb and chicken and a can of Coke for $17. Not bad and full of flavour.

An expansive, family owned Sydney Road institution that has been there for 20+ years! Decor is embarrassingly late 70s/early 80s with the walls covered in retro wood panelling and the overhanging street shop sign lit up by light bulbs, but I've been here many times now with friends and family for both lunches and dinners and have never once been disappointed. Having a huge shop space means Alasya can easily accommodate large groups of diners. Staff are generally friendly and polite, but sometimes might be a bit slow to fulfill requests or slightly forgetful, although it's generally not a problem. <br/>Would highly recommend Alasya; it's my "go to" for Turkish food in Brunswick. The Alasya pide Turkish pizza is a definite must try (especially with a bit of lemon juice squeezed over). The stuffed eggplant/capsicums are also lovely, smothered in the special Alasya sauce. The delicious Turkish bread is always fresh, pillowy and chewy (often comes out served warm) because it's baked daily in-house.

Congratulations, Alasya is my first ever review. Honestly lift your f u c k I n g game! We didn’t come here to lose kilos and maintain health. We ordered a slab of oily spinning meat wrapped in bread and a serve of cancerous chips. Why on earth would you even consider NOT SALTING THE CHIPS. we are eating here to get as close to death via salted chips as possible. Thank you for ruining our cheat night. May as well have stayed home with the steamed chicken and broccoli I have pre made for tomorrow’s lunch. What a fail of an ending to a good night. burn....

Went here today and bought bread and dip. The bread had mould on it and the dip was off. They obviously sell old bread out the front. I threw it all out. Do not go here.

Wtf happened to this place ? I haven't been here for a while and what a disaster!<br/>I'll start off with the food. Terrible. That's it terrible . The only thing that was decent was the chicken and that's it. The felafel was dry and tasteless , the couple other entree that we ordered with mince meat was foul! <br/>Then came the doner lamb . This use to be my favorite but this time around it was not only dry and semi warm but it tasted it was off! <br/>Worst thing part of it was when I told the waitress she didn't even take it when I gave it to her and said she'll speak to the manager which she didn't because we had to ask another waitress!<br/>On top of all of this one of the many other waitresses decides to vacuum at 8:45pm in the middle of the restaurant. Yes you heard me correctly VACUUM! And not just because something was spilt and she wanted to do a quick vacuum , it was vacuuming as she's packing up the restaurant as if it's closing !<br/>It's sad to say this as I really enjoyed coming here but nothing saved it from the disaster that it was.<br/>☹️<br/>Before I forget when I came to pay the waitress didn't even give me the itemized bill she just told me the amount . Seriously.
The Gastronaut
Hands down one of the BEST Kebabs in Town. The portion, the flavors, the break, and the meat - all perfect! The dips are great too. This restaurant never disappoints.
The Other Jenners
Had some super yummy takeaway from this fab Turkish spot in Brunswick. Every dish was a flavour bomb and for the price, it's a bargain! We would definitely recommend!

Simply was worst Turkish restaurant ever. Meat was not fresh and chewy like a rubber. worst part that there was no person in charge to resolve the issue just some waitresses running randomly. really bad experience although Turkish cuisine is famous with their grills but not this restaurant.
Massacred Snake
'Tis truly was utter trash, where should I begin? I'm with a family of 6 just to highlight that. First of all, the plates still had grime on them when they were served to us, this is especially wrong since they are toying with the health of customers by using stained dishes and the food will also be contaminated by such lazy and unethical practices. <br/><br/>Our waiting time was about 45 minutes, usually this wouldn't be an issue, however in this case it was due to the ridiculous portions of the meals we had received, a small piece of borek on a 10 by 5 cm chopping board, and other pides, which mind you cost about $12 a meal, yes $12 for such a tiny piece of food. You must be wondering about the quality of the food...well here's the news, it was burnt and dry, it tasted like chalk in your mouth. The meat on the other hand was oily and quite rough to be precise. <br/><br/>We weren't even served bread which is a staple in a Turkish restaurant, and often comes free of charge. Didn't apply here whatsoever. Our hunger was not quenched in the slightest and to top it off the bill was $83.10. Goddamn $83.10 for food that was not delicate or of high quality, incredibly tiny, which in itself is a mockery and for 45 minutes of waiting, just for this shit. Would not recommend spending your hard-earned cash here, but hey, that's your choice.
DJB
been a few times<br/>good value when you get set menus<br/>sometimes the staff are slow and slack<br/>food isn't bad Turkish food, not bad serving sizes
Shaie25
The food is top notch, high quality. So expect to get your money's worth, because it's worth every penny. We ordered the meatlovers banquet x2, and man did it taste so good. There was so much meat on our table we asked them to pack it away for us to take home, because we were so stuffed towards the end. Friendly staff, however the decor is wayyyy out of time, reminds you of the 80's. The shop is literally 4 shops that have been opened together, I guess they grew over the years and kept expanding shop after shop. Everything u get is fresh, hand made and taste devine. Treat yourself and the family you won't regret it I can assure you that

We enjoy going to this place for lunch sometimes. The cooking is very old school and reminds me of the kinds of style cooking of my grandma. By no means is this place modern and chic but it doesn't try to be! The service is always good and the food is cozy comfort food for sure and it's yummy which is the most important thing. Portions are good and they do a mean turkish delight. We are just down the road so we'll always go back
Tj
Disgusting and terrible. Go fix your menu, attitude and staff. Would never return even if it was the last restaurant on earth. Since 1978? How...
Rayray
Went there last night for mothers day dinner, the waitresses were not attentive at all. We ordered 4 main meals and some drinks but waited 25 minutes and finally had to ask one of the staff to at least nring us our drinks ( simple orange juice and pepsi). Food was sizzling hot but not tasty at all. Kind of disappointed. :(
Eucalyptus
Alasya has amazing doner kebabs. So big that we would often split one between two people. Well worth trying out if you're in the area and feeling very hungry.
Critic
Great and very spacious Turkish restaurant. Doner plate was tasty with a moderate serving size. Mince borek and pide were very similar in taste. Chips serving was very small - suitable for a toddler.
Gia
This used to be a reliable and cheap place, but the price has gone up and quality has gone down. <br/>Some of the dips are good, but others are bland. The meat is reliable, however the breads and pastries are hit and miss, with some not as fresh as others. Vegetables are usually the stand out dishes, but the special sauce and the dolmas have really crashed in terms of quality and flavour.<br/>The wait time has increased a lot, with under-staffing being an ongoing issue. The waitresses are friendly but the cashier is repeatedly impatient, slow and unfriendly. Don't think I'll go back.
Hemi Rakei Reidy
Does an alright kebab which elevates to N amazing Kebab at 2 in the morning the chicken beats the lamb if your indecisive. And you can order mini Turkish buns in there hundreds for BBQs if you happen to be spitting a lamb!
Matt Malone
Not sure what happened to this joint. Used to be great value for money but seems to be far more expensive because the serving sizes have shrunk considerably AND increase the prices. The value of money aspect has completely deminished.<br/><br/>Don't get me wrong - it's a business but don't increase the price AND decrease the serving size in one whack.<br/><br/>It used to be a trade off that you would have to wait a considerably long time to get your order taken because you knew the value was not in the service but in the food.
John
This restaurant has been around for eons. Been coming here since 2006 and still love coming here. Ita a good cheap feed in the likes of Sofia's. Great for students and unlimited turkish bread!!! Rawr. Best dish ever = Moussaka. The only thing that kinda lets down is the service, they seem to always be understaffed but its forgivable once you start tucking in!
MallyMelbs
I think this is one of Melbourne's best restaurants. It's cheap, fresh food and while the inside is dated, it certainly has its charms. I always bring friends or family who are visiting for a meal. From the fresh house made dips (cheese and carrot is a personal fave!) to the buttery flaky boreks and the quality cuts of lamb and chicken, I really can't fault it. Definitely a must try while in Brunswick.
RAVI KIRAN
Good food.! Tastes good with great ambience. Friendly people Nd attention to detail. Living close by so would like to jump in any time. Bit expensive though compared to Next door restaurant TIBAS.
Ahmed Naufal
Had the chicken HSP. The meat was done really well and the sauces had a really good balance. They add the hot meat onto the cheese so the cheese is melts onto the chips by the time you dig in.

I am a return customer, the, Meat Dolma is something I will nip in to just buy takeaway (amazing, simple and delicious). Had a late lunch there today, service was slow, but the Meat Dolma, Russian Salad, was wonderful, the Pilav was nice but not fantastic this time. Shared a Mixed Doner Kebab plate, everything but the sliced beef/lamb was wonderful, the sliced beef/lamb tasted odd, so we left that, after mentioning it to the wait staff., Had some of there AMAZING turkish delight, Rose and Mint flavour,(drools slightly in memory). Sadly I can't eat walnuts, and as all the Baklava, has mixed nuts including walnuts, I can't have that, but my companions did, and loved theirs. So a mix, some was amazing, some missed the mark, wasn't during a regular meal time. I personally like the laid back, simple decor. And well if you havn't gone, give them a go, and try one of there 2 person minimum banquets
Nikki Mier
Saddens to me say, but the food here is not the best quality. The hummus was a sub zero and the aesthetics took me back to 1921 (not in a good way). <br/>It is however a decent feed when nothing else is open.
Maidstone Yana
We walked past this shop on busy Sydney Road and just wanted to grab a quick meal for takeaways since the shop looked so empty at 3pm.<br/><br/>We waited a bit too long for lamb kebab with fries and a can of drink ($14)<br/><br/>Got home, open it, it was mixed kebab. We would still eat it. <br/><br/>Generous portion of food. Lamb tasted good but bit dry and chewy. Chicken was juicy. Fries were nice and crispy. Till we finished the last chip, we saw lot of oil down the bottom of the container. The conversation shift from turkish food to vigorous exercise to burn off extra calories. <br/><br/><br/><br/>
FoodingAroundMelbourne
After hearing great raves about this place, I gave it a go last night and I can say I was unimpressed overall. Service was rubbish, lamb was dry (chicken was ok), bread was good although too slow to come out, the salad came out after a hour or so of waiting, dips were uneventful (truthfully I make better dips at home) and the prawns were like cardboard which couldn't be eaten and were sent back they were so bad. I would be interested to try their range of sweets but wouldn't be back for a meal I don't think.
Eat.y
We waited 25 mins for bread and dips and 45 mins for our meals, which we got only after asking for an update. The service was slow and lacking - we got our own menus after waiting at a dirty table for a long time. When it came out the food was good and the bread fresh, but the service was unacceptably slow considering we were not a large party (3 people) and they weren't busy.
Osman Cobani
I ordered takeaway as I had family over for Ramadan, I ordered containers of lamb (2) and chicken (2). All 15 of our family had a mild case of food poisoning.
E
I really like the idea of this place, and always see other people getting great meals.<br/><br/>However, every time I order here the sides are NEVER what they describe in the menu.<br/><br/>Menu says couscous? You might get rice instead.<br/><br/>Menu says roast vegetables? You're probably getting chips.
Havachatkiwi
We all went here for Mother's Day lunch and were impressed with the food. The meat was tasty and tender, the dips delicious and the service by waitresses attentive even if they were run off their feet. The bill was 100% correct and after reading some of the reviews I was dubious but having now given it our own go, none of us could complain.<br/>PS: We loved the jugs of Pepsi Max - it was fizzy fresh and filled with ice to make it cold.
Awatea Stringer
Horrible horrible horrible...<br/><br/>I've been coming here for the last five years and it has been above par, however tonight has proven why everyone despises this establishment.<br/><br/>I ordered a "donner kebab" take in. I was told I needed to buy extra bread which I did. Upon receiving my order I was given a takeaway dish and which didn't contain ANY salad or bread, which is customary with their advertised "donnar kebab. When I opened up my tin foil box I was "welcomed" to a greasy slimy mess of lamb which was inedible to anyone that could have been remotely hungry.<br/><br/>The main issue aside from the utterly appalling service was having to pay for a meal and being served only a third (of greasy meat shit) was not being given bread or salad.<br/><br/>Alasya will no longer have a place in my heart or late night decisions. I hope your lacklustre efforts on this night will not affect all of your loyal customers.<br/><br/>Not happy...
Monique Olszewski
I have been going to this restaurant since I was 5 years old and it's still by far my favourite place for a meal out! <br/>Yes the decor is a bit dated but the family friendly atmosphere and great staff make this place
Caleb
Who ever wants to try the best kebab in the Melbourne come here they make their on breads and all the other ingredients are very fresh too with finger licking sauces you can't go wrong too bad I live far I can't come here more often .
May Charles
If you want a great feed and value for money, this is the place. The food is reasonably priced and if you do not judge a book by its cover, you will enjoy this restaurant. Staff are friendly and attentive. We travel from Portarlington to eat here, as it has been a favorite place of ours for years.
Judy Quinn
Retro decor and charming staff add to the delightful experience but it is all about the absolutely to die for food!!! The kofte is melt in your mouth juicy and the chicken sis is charry, remarkably juicy perfectly seasoned deliciousness! The rice pilav and sides were excellent - the cabbage dolma was another stand out and every entre is perfect! Just great had to write a review straight away hope this place never goes it's like it's from a golden era!
Vegemite Girl
April: Reasonable price. Dated decor but that's part of the place's charm. Friendly and attentive staff. As much bread as you need, but one eater said that it would be better cut into small sandwich like size.<br/>August: absolute bargain. dips and bread were nice (bread endless). Humus, cucumber and carrots dips. Mediterranean salad was nice with enough dressing. Plated lamb doner was dry. Chicken was well received (i didn't have any). Prawns had freezer burn (uneaten but uncharged)

As usual a busy place and tonight was no exception. In fact so busy that they confused the dips with meat platter giving us the meat platter before the dips. The cucumber dip was so fresh one could really taste the freshness of the cucumber.<br/>The meat platter was nice and tasty and not overly salty. Meats were cooked to perfection with the rump strips very eatable.<br/>Although the service tonight was not up to the usual standard one could excuse the waitress as they were run off their feet.<br/>Overall a good eating experience with a few hiccups.

I've never said this in a review before but there are better places to go in Sydney Rd now than Alasya and you would be advised look elsewhere . The place is looking very sad and a travesty of its former glory in the 1980s when it was a part of ones initiation into Brunswick. Last time we went the food was almost inedible and service really poor. Search for an alternative unless you are totally overcome by nostalgia.

Alasya is an old, somewhat decrepit-looking Turkish restaurant on Brunswick's busy Sydney Road. The first thing you notice about it is how huge it is, spanning 2 shop lots.  It also looks like it hadn't been renovated since 1982 with wooden wall panels and furniture looking like the set of Al Bundy's house in Married With Children. There were many large pictures of food on the wall of takeaway counter but no prices. Normally this would ring alarm bells (rip-off?) but I was starving (again)and at 11.45am, nothing else seemed worth eating on the block besides some bakeries and cheap sandwich bars. The waitress seemed friendly enough and seated me at the table and brought me an empty glass, presumably for water. After 15 minutes later staring at this empty receptacle, still no water was brought and I had to call for it. I ordered a Chef's Choice special ($17) on the overoptimistic understanding it was the chef's best choice of grilled meats. Wrong. The lamb strips were overcooked and as tough as shoe leather. The chicken strips fared better, they were reasonably juicy and so was one of the steaks. The other steak was full of gristle and tough, just like the lamb strips. They all lacked salt. I did enjoy the small serve of rice, which was moist, buttery and tasty. Overall, there was nothing in the spicing or presentation to indicate that this food was Turkish in origin and was a little better than anything your average punter could've knocked up on his home Webber BBQ. Probably won't go back but will give it 2 points for its friendly but inept service and the great rice.
Food
Busy busy busy. Came on a Saturday night without a booking, but they kindly squeezed us in, table for 2. we started with dips. ordered 2 dips and received a complimentary 3rd dip which I thought was very kind. dips very tasty loved the hummus the bread was very soft and warm lovley. great start to the evening. then our mains arrived around 1 hour later. the mixed doner was ok a little tight of the lamb serving and but generous with the chicken, taste was nice but have had better. the other main a mixed grill, the lamb chop was tuff and the shish lamb was not edible, I showed this "shish" to the waitress to which she answered what's that? she gave us a discount on that meal.<br/>the service is rushed , not the best customer service , and some even treat you to their lovely attitudes.

The food here is below average. This place came highly recommended by a friend, but it was disappointing. The food doesn't taste very fresh, and the service is average. Will not return

best kebab I've had in my life... The bread is perfect and it's so filling but I ate the whole thing because it's that good! and I've struggled to find the perfect falafel and I have found it at alasya!
Dos Delish
The food here is good. And there is sooooo much! So much to choose from, really generous serves and all of it was really good.<br/><br/>Don't go here if you are looking for white linen service but if you are after quick Turkish fare then this is the one. Serve sizes vary - which means variety is the order of the day!<br/><br/>Some of the highlights - love the cabbage rolls, fried halloumi, spinach dip and the hummus were winners and the lamb doner with yogurt sauce. There is also enough bread on the table to feed a small army.<br/><br/>And you will not break the bank. So cheap it is insane and you can BYO also.... Great for a cheap and cheerful group option.

TIPS ON HOW TO ALASYA<br/>By Cheembert<br/><br/>1. Hunt down a table. Wave someone down for drinks order. This waving down theme should be modus operandi for the rest of your evening. <br/><br/>2. Try to stick to dips, mains and sigara boregi (filo rolls stuffed with cheese or other yummy things). Other menu items should be treated with suspicion, as most are grossly over or under cooked, or over or under seasoned.<br/><br/>3. Do not get offended by:<br/> a) dirty tables<br/> b) crying children<br/> c) 50/50 chance of rude, sassy waitresses<br/> d) daggy decor or<br/> e) strange difference in menu price vs. actual price of menu items.<br/><br/>4. Eat lots of bread. It's unlimited with dips ! !<br/><br/>5. Go with people. Order many dips. Laugh loud.<br/><br/>In summation, Alasya can be so great if done properly. All the best and choose wisely ! !

I rarely eat at Sydney road but felt like some kebabs before dropping of the Mrs at work. Alasya caught our eye and the Mrs had said she has been before and liked it. Food was alright but the food took so long to come out on quiet day. Fairly pricey as well.

This is the place to go if you want overpriced food served with an attitude. Ordered 4 chefs special which the waitress put through as ONE so after waiting for nearly 40 min, they bring just one main meal to a table of 5! We thought rest were on their way however when nothing came after waiting for another 15 min I got the waitress and asked - their reply--> oh the other girl said you asked for 1 so that's what you're getting .. If u want more than you have to wait longer'! No apologies no compensation.. Just told us to wait and walked away--> over an hour since we came (to an empty restaurant) and the only thing we had were dips & bread!! Don't bother with this place .. Sydney rd has MUCH better places to eat where the waitresses are not rude!!

Always good, Alaysa turned on the deliciousness for us tonight. Sunday night service is fast and friendly. The chicken doner is possibly even better than the lamb, although the lamb is fantastic. And baklava. Yum!

Consistently excellent. I've been coming here for 13 years, and I've never had a disappointing experience.

The most tasteless kebab served with zero love. Spewing because I rarely treat myself to a kebab and when I do I'm not asking for much. I now know to never go back to Alasya (it was one the place on sydney rd) not anymore, what a shame.

About Bang for the buck eatery in Melbourne that dishes up impressive Turkish cuisine. Alaysa is named after the Turkish Cypriot surname of the restaurant owner’s mentor.

A kebab from Alasya will cost you around $8.50, and in return you essentially get two meals in one (it’s a strong and stretchy stomach that can handle one of these babies all in one go). I’ve never seen so much stuffing inside a kebab before, and you can opt for as many different sauces as your hungry heart desires.<br/>

Amazing. Had the iskender and it was the best I've had. Definitely returning for more.

Not worth the trouble. Came in to order take away waiting upwards of twenty minutes on a "ten minute order"<br/><br/>I asked how many falafel in a 3 dollar pack advertised on their online menu and was told six<br/><br/>Upon receiving the order, despite being charged almost fifty dollars for sis yogurtlu, a small baklava container and an entrée size borek, we were told we werent charged for the falafel and had to order again<br/><br/>We were then charged 7.80 for six pieces and told there was no entrée size (which I later found is on the menu for 3.20)<br/><br/>Our receipt said Anju and im assuming this is a name. I am a cashier as well and tried to be sympathetic but this kind of service is truly shocking. She obviously had no idea what she was selling especially after saying that its "$7.20 for the six dollar [falafel]"<br/><br/>No apologies were issued.<br/><br/>After all that, the baklava was syrupy and soggy, the borek was flavourless, and the falafel was drowned in a disgusting bitter tahini. After scraping it off, the falafel itself was severely underseasoned tasting vaguely of cumin and nothing else.

Lunch for four at Alaysia Turkish Restaurant ( more a cafe ) on 7/2/15. I booked Alaysia Turkish restaurant expecting to receive fair value for money, authentic, nice tasting Turkish food that was cooked fresh & appropriately and presented nicely.<br/>Well, I was disappointed and embarrassed as I had booked the place months in advance for a special ethnic food lunch with my cousins. We all travelled a long way in terms of kilometres and time to enjoy our special feast. We had the 2nd and 3rd banquets on the list for just under $26 per banquet. It was not good value when you looked at what we received for paying over $100. The dips were nothing special and were served on bread and butter plates with no spoons ( we had to ask for those ), the salads and starter dishes were very ordinary and nothing about them was particularly enjoyable. So called presentation was lacking and every thing was plonked on the table without serving spoons, The chicken was just satisfactory but quite dry and the beef was a tough as boot leather and I couldn't even get my knife through it!!! It was over cooked, dry as a chip and of poor quality. The only thing I enjoyed was the rolled vine leaf with rice and minced lamb inside. The baked bread was okay! I will never go there again and I will be telling people how bad the place is. Shame on you Alaysia you need to close down if you can't do better.

Worst food. I came here tonight with a friend because almost nowhere else was open. Despite the negative reviews on Urbanspoon, we true to be optimistic. We were very naive. We ordered an assortment of different items trusting that we would enjoy at least some of them. Unfortunately we were sorely disappointed. The food was very poorly presented, barely warm, and tasted very bland. The bread was stale and must have simply been warmed slightly. Whilst the service was prompt, it was far from friendly and no one could manage a smile. The food was cheap and poorly prepared. Frankly, this is amongst the worst restaurants at which I have ever eaten. The only thing worse than starving would be eating at this restaurant.

Not fresh food. Terrible customer service! Terrible Food!!<br/>I asked the hostess prior to ordering if the bread was fresh. She assured me that it was, when the bread came it was stale, all they did was warm it up to hide the fact it was stale. It ruined our dinner and our evening.

Two thumbs down!. Waited for like 30 mins to be served and no waitresses turned up! This happened on a Monday noon when restaurant was pretty quiet and staffs were moving around without taking care of only seated customers! WILL NEVER EVER COME BACK FOR SURE!

Still waiting!!! Worst service!. Nobody served us. We waited for exactly 30 minutes for someone to take orders or bring us a bottle of water, then we walked out. We went there at 3 p.m. Monday, and it was not at all busy. Awful customer service. I DO NOT recommend it

Good Food, Service Disappointing. Have been to Alasya's since I was a little girl and was a fav casual dine in Turkish restaurant of the family's..Good authentic Turkish food at a reasonable price..its a shame Owner Mr Bekir hasn't grasped the concept of "You get what you pay for" in regards to his service staff...pay your staff more than $10 p/hr and 'Quality Customer Service' might actually reappear just like it existed in the early 80's...you'll also find that paying $20p/hr will attract Hospitality Professionals...Professional & Efficient staff also results in half the staff required on the floor, so your not losing out $$ wise...Ahh if only I owned Alasya my fav restaurant as a little girl, I would kick arse!!!

Diner from Adelaide- Regular diner. I cannot describe the authenticity of the meals at Alasya's! It has a great 1970's vibe. I urge all tourists and locals to give this place a try. It won't hurt the pocket either.
MelbFoodie
Ohh man verry rude staff, I am here to pay and eat you are not doing me any favours by serving me guys, NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL

Rude staff!!! They need to learn the basics of hospitality. Plus they always get orders wrong.

For the night owls.. Another one of those 1980's Melbourne, time capsules. Opened in 1979, it doesn't look as if much has changed since 1986. <br/><br/>Food: For the price (which is good), the food is surprisingly good. The selection of dips is excellent, but be prepared for large portions. (8) <br/><br/>Ambience: Kitschy honey pine wood panels the walls, dirty old menu pictures from the 1970's - this is old school Melbourne at it's best. However, it suffers from the same issue most dives in Melbourne have - the bright lighting can be over bearing after a big night out. Fluorescent lighting in restaurants should be BANNED!!! (7 or 3 depending on your sensibilities). <br/><br/>Service: Can be up and down. Sometimes you can be waiting a while for somebody to take your order. Also if you want some of the more "exotic" items on the menu, be prepared for them not to be on that night (I've been going here for years and have found this to be consistent). (5) <br/><br/>Value: Hey, it's Turkish, it's cheap. Plus it's open till very late most nights. Not pricey by any means (8)<br/><br/>OVERALL SCORE: 7/10 or 6/10

Just been to Alasya. Tonight we went to Alasya and although we were a little apprehensive given some of the bad reviews thought we would give it a try for my wife's birthday. There were 17 of us and unfortunately the errors made by the waitress in our order of dips was a clear indication for the rest of the night. Firstly the dips were great but then the rest of the meal was a disaster ! One of the other reviews mentioned the taste of the meat....well the chicken had horrible taste as though it was "off"...and then the lamb had the same horrible odour. Most of the meat was not eaten and after waiting over 3 hours to complete our meal...(due to constant delays in getting our food)......we were glad to be out of the place ! Sadly our we would NEVER return to Alasya....and can't believe a restaurant with such horrible food remains in business given the transparency provided by Social Media !

Disgusting turkish food. Wow. what can i say? <br/><br/>for my work i have traveled and eaten out a lot, often in the third world where hygiene standards and the quality of available ingredients are understandably lower than what we are used to here in the developed world. <br/><br/>suffice to say I have eaten in some pretty dodgy places. so has my wife.<br/><br/>who would've thought we would hit rock bottom, ending up in a dump like this, on sydney road brunswick, of all places.<br/><br/>this is the worst restaurant i have ever been to. i cannot stress how awful the food is, not to mention the disgraceful service, or lack thereof. <br/><br/>a pity. no not just a pity, a scandal.

One time experience !!!!. Nice bred . that's the only positive I can say .<br/>We where tow adults .we had the banquet menu.didnt enjoy nothing from the dips or salads (tin beens in watery sauce. Something that was spouse to be home made yoghurt ) the meat tase like yesterday's left overs.and the service mach the standard of the food. <br/>One time experience !!!

Really enjoy the food, great prices, service good. Keep coming back when food is this good!!

Used to be a regular 7 years ago when I lived in the area and the food was always spot on great. Went in today after a long absence and the food was very bland and no way near the prices they charge. I ordered a kings feast for us, the dips were bland, runny and lacking any original flavour, u get better dips at Coles. The meat was ok, the chicken was nicest of all things, but for the price of $28.50 & the fact that u need to order a minimum of two, makes it even more un appealing. <br/><br/>When I was paying at the register I realised what had happened to this place. The fact that people from the sub continent are cooking Turkish food should have given away the fact that it's not worth visiting anymore. <br/><br/>Don't waste your money if you want authentic Turkish food.

No service. Waited twenty minutes and no-one came to the table. We left, forgotten and unnoticed, and ate at Tiba's down the road
