Review Tandoori Nights - Brunswick

Shekhar Ravi
Totally disappointed with garlic nan. They have put a paste of garlic and termeric over tandoori bread. Cheema nan is also not made the way they have made. Kashmiri pulao was ok but didn't match with menu description, no nuts no crunchy. Lamb are good but it was not korma, they made it like a simple masala curry. Taste was disappointed.

AMAZING food, we shared 4 curries and all were just excellent. Also great for our friend who is coeliac - almost everything is gluten free. I used to get takeaway from here as a student 10 years ago and the food is still as good now as it was then. Very glad we went back!

I remember this restaurant being much better quality. But tonight the food was very disappointing. Super oily samosa. The eggplant masala tasted odd - old potato taste, as well something not quite right. Not sure why this restaurant's food quality has degraded so much. But I won't order it again.

Ordered 4 curries, 1 of them being incorrect and inedible due to a dietary requirement. We politely called back and asked for a replacement curry with the one that we originally ordered. The lady was extremely rude and snarky but reluctantly said they'd make the curry we originally ordered and asked numerous times if we were getting it free of charge due to the mix up, which was agreed. When we went to pick it up however, she tried to charge us. We stated that on the phone she said it was free because it was what we ordered originally!!!! She still refused and even raised her voice at us when we were being nice. So strange. No apologies or sincerity at all and ultimately wasted 2 curries to conclude. We will never come back here again. Service was horrible and food wasn't even that great for the fuss we endured.

If I could give 0 stars I would. They gave us the wrong curry in our order. They gave us a meat curry instead of vegetarian so we couldn’t eat it as we don’t eat meat. We specifically asked for vego curry. We called to ask to switch on the phone and the lady was extremely rude and unapologetic and refused to switch the curry but agreed to make a new one. Then when we showed up to get the new one she was trying to make us pay when it wasn’t our fault. She raised her voice at us when we were being nice. So now we have to wast a curry and throw it out because we can’t eat it and we have to pay for a meal somewhere else. Will never come back

I was extremely disappointed with the quality of food at this place! I would not recommend. The chicken was dry and not cooked well, practically pink. The lamb cutlet had no meat on it and was practically fat and bone. Samosa was super oiley. Waste of our money and time

Went here once. Will go here again! Came here at 10:00pm. Nothing else was open, chose this place and glad we did. Very yummy garlic naan and butter chicken. The portions were also pretty large.

The staff were very nice, we walked in an hour to closing time. They served us with a smile even coming to check in on us during our meal. Presentation of the food was simple, but the flavors amazing. We ordered the chicken tikka and the malai kebab as starters, it took me back to India. Will definitely visit again!!

Our go to local Indian restaurant. The butter chicken and paneer staff never let's us down. We also love the cheese and garlic naan is delicious. Generous portions and great price.

Food was incredibly bland and inauthentic. You really get what you pay for here. The papadums were premade and offered as an entre to everyone but I noticed they were all so burnt. Had the eggplant masala and wanted to try an Indian “fried rice” because I’d never seen that before. The rice had iceberg lettuce and strange proportions of other random veggies, i didn’t take any of the dishes home and barely touched them. The staff were lovely but restaurant needs to work on their menu.

Been wanting to visit this place for a long time and finally got a chance to do so. Had high expectations of the place but we were disappointed in the end.

Malai Seekh Kebab - This was the only winner of the night. The kebabs were fresh and marinated well with the spices. It was paired with salad and mint chutney which we enjoyed.

Kheema Naan - This was good although not the best. I enjoyed this with the chutney dip. A good option if you like stuffed naans.

Kadai/ Karahi Chicken - We ordered this dish thinking it would be good considering it to be chef's special. Unfortunately if was not the best even after asking them to make it spicy - it was quite bland. We ordered butter naans with it and didn't feel brave enough to order the biryani we had in mind lest we be disappointed again.

This place is moderately busy with lots of orders for takeout lunch or dinner.I assume the reason we did not enjoy the food was because it was tailored for Aussie spice level which is quite low. 3 stars for service and the seekh kebabs.

Food was extremely bad. Naan felt like rubber. Curries were cooked with old ingredients. Absolute disappointment..

I've eaten here quite a few times over the last year and I've enjoyed every time.

Its not a place that I'd go for a special evening but for a mid week dinner with a friend its perfect.

We tend to order a serve of somosas to start followed by chick pea curry, chicken tikka masala with rice. There is always more than we can eat and its an enjoyable meal.

The service is very friendly.

For a tasty, reliable indian dinner that isn't expensive I'd definitely recommend Tandoori Nights.

Nice Cosy place with friendly staff. Yummy, delicious food, service could have been better but nothing to complain.
Food came fast and it was hot, place was clean and had amenities.

Nice neighbourhood Indian restaurant. Curry was good. Great price (cheaper than some other places nearby). Would be happy to order from again.

Cold nights call for hearty meals - this place was not too busy, had chicken madras, an eggplant curry and a spinach and potato dish, with samosas and garlic naan bread - I had forgotten that they always only seem to have one person working the floor - so expect service to stall, good food, nice staff

I ordered takeaway on a week day after work. With the help of an Indian colleague going through their menu online, I picked Karahi beef, Raita of the Day, plain naan and garlic naan. The guy who took my telephone order was very friendly and courteous. When I picked up the food, the total price $19.10 was lower than expected. It was then I realised the takeaway price was a few dollars cheaper than the online menu. The food is quite nice and I would return.

Monday evening I decided to order some food for a treat. The food took nearly 2 hours.. When the food arrived it was stone cold and the order was incorrect. I called to complain and no one apologised however they did say the correct order was coming. One hour later still no food.. My partner called and asked where it was they said it was on its way.. Again very rude and we were made to feel as if it was our error. The food arrived at 9.20pm (ordered at 6.30) the food had been made so spicy it was inedible. I will never order from here again and will be taking the matter to the health department.

Impressed with the polite customer service at this place. We went with family members and everyone enjoyed the food. The dishes and curries were tasty. Environment is so congested in Sydney road road area bit can be improved. Advice to improve better hand washing area without visibility of the kitchen, sometimes Indian curry kitchen view can be miss fired.

The food here is delicious, just so so yummy. Plus, the staff are lovely. I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant, I have been here many times and have always had a fantastic meal.

Awesome Indian. Best Butter Chicken I've ever had. Really cheap but also really good quality. I've been coming here for 9 years and the quality hasn't dipped at all. Highly recommended!

Do not use this restaurant. I booked takeaway through Menulog. I called 50 minutes later to check on the status, and was told that, after they checked, that my delivery had just left and was on its way. It never turned up. Their phone was unresponsive, and I ended up cancelling the order 2 hours after placing it. Busy Friday nights I can understand. Lying, I cannot.
Teeny Reeny
The food was yummy! I ordered the malai kofta which was tasty and creamy. Everything is very well priced however the decor needs an urgent update.
Steven Joshua-James
I called and called the landline to no avail. I decided to order through the menulog website instead. It took over an hour and a half for the food to be delivered.

We ordered the Beef Vindaloo and the Spinach Paneer with rice and naan. Both dishes were excellent; the Vindaloo had the perfect amount of spiciness and the beef melted in your mouth. We had BYO wine so we were there for awhile after we had finished our meal, but our plates were not cleared. Water was provided as soon as we sat down along with pappadums.

This place seems to be more popular as takeaway and I would usually rate Indian takeout lower than if I was to eat it fresh at the restaurant, straight out of the kitchen.

Avoid at all costs if considering ordering take out. The food tasted ok, however there were several issues that would put me off ordering from them again. We were told it would take up to an hour for food to arrive, it finally arrived after 1.5 hours. When it finally arrived, the food was completely cold, and one item was so poorly packed that when I picked it up, the bottom fell out of the bag and the food spilled everywhere. Really not a good experience, such a shame as the food itself doesn't taste too bad. Very disappointing!

I usually come here as on average the food is delicious and spot on. Tonight was a bit dissapointing though. Ordered kashmiri rice but it was actually Coconut rice. Ordered a hot vindaloo and it wasnt even mild and way salty. Bit dissapointed about tonight but as its usually good ill return. 8/10/16 .... I said ill return and I did, service was good but why with the water thin curry!!! If the rent is too high just up the prices instead of skimping on ingredients. Sadly I think ill give it a miss as theres no consistency any more.

Affordable, tasty Indian.

We first got takeaway from here and it was delicious. Ordered over the phone and I brazenly ordered the spiciest butter chicken imaginable but it was in all sincerity, freaking delicious, although I did have to down a litre of milk afterwards and I can usually handle my spicy food.

We've also eaten at the restaurant and the service staff are friendly and attentive. The decor and ambience is nothing to write home about but the food is consistently good and the portions fairly large. We've had leftovers the two times we've eaten there and the staff are always more than happy to provide us with containers to take the food home.

A winner!

The worst customer service I have ever received anywhere!
I Waited for over 2 hours to receive food, which is a 5 minute drive. And then to find out I didn't receive my correct order, I'll say I was very disappointed to find this out as we were extremely hungry after waiting that long.
I called the store yet again, & the restaurant was open for another hour so I presumed I would still receive my order.
In this time of frustration on how they could screw up so so badly, I had The privilege of them hanging up on me for asking what they were going to do for me?
Turns out, no food, no refund & not even a phone call from the manager or anyone to tell me I wasn't going to receive my original order which was feeding 8 people!
Never going back, & people don't waste your time with this place.
I even created this account to leave this review especially. There are better, cheaper, more reliable, sources of Indian food in Melbourne.
Bethany Hooper
My partner and I are regulars here as he adores their indian food, but I have to say what really makes me love this place is the excellent customer service we received one night when eating in.

On my partners birthday I decided to organise a little surprise dinner party for him here. The staff were very accommodating, allowing me to decorate with balloons and table decorations beforehand. The wait service was fast & staff were very friendly. Overall also very cheap!

Would definitely recommend to all - my personal favourite dish is the malai kofta curry

Terrible customer service, and foods were tasteless, salty and greasy. We ordered delivery on Friday night, and it is literally about 5 mins drive from our house to the restaurant, but the foods arrived in 2 hours and 10 minutes!! When we ordered, the guy on the phone said it would take 1 hour, and after 1 hour and 15 minutes, no call from them, and I called up, and asked where is our foods. He said the driver just left, and should be there in 5 minutes, but nothing! After another 40 minutes we were waiting, still no food arrived, and we called up, and said we just wanted to cancel the order, and this is just ridiculous, but the guy said, the driver should be there soon, about 5 minutes, and again, nothing! This guy has lied multiple time, and he could have just told us if there was a problem in the kitchen, etc.. and we should just cancel our order! The foods finally arrived after over 2 hours, and they were terrible too! Salty, greasy, and tasteless, and not spicy as we expected. Just very dissapointing and not worth it! They didn't even once call us and explaining what happened or apologised! If there is a zero rating here, I would definitely give them zero! Just appalling. Definitely we won't be ordering again!

Amazing food and so cheap. We paid $34 for two curries, naan and rice to share, and it was so delicious. Would highly recommend the eggplant vegetarian curry, one of the best i've ever had. It was a Monday night when we went and the service was attentive and ridiculously quick. Definitely one of the better Indian restaurants around Melbourne, will come here again for sure!

I had high hopes for this place as it was packed when I walked in. However, the food was too greasy and creamy. It actually tasted off and made me feel sick afterwards.
Sofie
My favourite Indian in Melbourne! The food is consistently amazing and the service is always friendly and fast.
The curries have great flavour and are very good value.
Fallon Arnold
Delicious food but service was questionable. Had the banquet for $26 per person and the food was delicious. However it took nearly half an hour for someone to take our order and after the mains were served, our plates were left in front of us for nearly an hour. Had to prompt the staff to serve us desert. All in all, an enjoyable evening but the staff need to be more attentive.

I don't go out of my way for Indian, ever. But this place has absolutely blown my socks off! Amazing, delicious, authentic, flavoursome food - and it family owned.
I will recommend this little gem to everyone.

Excellent prices, great service, and incredible food. It's not often that I go out of my way to recommend restaurants to people - especially when it's a cuisine I've only recently started to eat.

Tandoori Nights is something altogether different, however. The portions are very generous, cooked perfectly, and coming out at around thirty dollars for a full meal for two (a curry each, naan each, and rice to share) is perfect for a cheap night out while still enjoying great food.

We now travel out to Brunswick every week or two, specifically to eat at this restaurant. Service with a smile and a great price? You can't go wrong with this establishment.

Ten out of ten!

EDIT 24/11/15

Now that Zomato has online ordering, we've used the service to get delivery several times. Not only does the food always arrive hot and fresh, it arrives around 40 minutes earlier than the expected delivery time.

My stomach is very full of delicious chicken madras, rice, and garlic naan. It's tough not to order from here every day of the week!

Amazing food!. I found this place by accident and I'm so glad! It's our new go-to Indian restaurant even when we're on the other side of town.

The food is always incredible, plus it's amazing value-for-money money (especially take away). The staff are quick and attentive and you're never left wanting for anything.

Cant recommend this place enough!

A favourite restaurant in Brunswick. I love Indian food, and so do the rest of my family, and we make an effort to visit Tandoori Nights regularly. They are always willing to accommodate a large group for bigger occasions. Although the restaurant only has a couple of staff working on the floor, we always feel like valued customers and really appreciate the service. The food is absolutely delicious - curries and the tandoori sizzling fish plate are amazing. Although the decor leaves a little to be desired in the 'trendy'-fied Sydney Rd area these days, the restaurant should not be overlooked because its food is brilliant and its prices so reasonable too.

Absolutely love this place. Get it regularly as takeaway and am never disappointed with whatever we choose. Great service and even better food!

Average and a little watery, doubtful I'd return

Went last nite.all diners looked miserable and told me they had been waiting ages. Staff are clueless.food was ok. Tables not cleared.then staff complained to us about other customers. Live v near. Won't return

Regular visitor. Great value, great food. always good service and such an extensive menu.

All the dishes I've ever had here have been quality. The curries are incredibly good and incredibly generous. Whenever my in-laws visit from Sydney we always go here and they are jealous they don't have such a quality Indian restaurant that they know about in Sydney.

If I had to pick dishes to recommend its the Lamb Coconut Fry or Chickpea Masala.
Angiemontana13
Have they changed hands?. I am a regular but on my last visit the food was shocking! I didn't recognise any of the staff and presumed it had changed hands. Can someone confirm this?
It's a real shame because this was my favorite Indian joint.
Lil.grl
Really nice, small, and wen we went it was so warm and stuffy inside, didnt help wen ur eating spicy food! Would be nice if they had some fresh air or something. But good food for the price, u won't b disappointed
Rory
Best Indian on Sydney road( think its also the only one).
Good value for money and friendly staff, what more could you ask for

Excellent curries. This place is an old favourite of mine. I've been going to Tandoori nights for about 12 years. I've never been disappointed. A good variety of curries, their version of korma is delicious. I highly recommend it if you're in the area.
Alabama
Generous portions, succulent meat, great service and super super cheap. If you want authentic Indian with superb service dont go to a place where it is$10 or less a main!! This is great western style Indian food at a great price and also byo beer, which can alwas help pass the time!!
Daz
Wasn't bad Indian, but wasn't great either. Nice and cheap though.
TheBigBadWolf
Great food, good price. Not skimpy on meat like some
Angie
The best Indian food in the north! I regularly frequent this restaurant and the food is always amazing and the service is great. I highly recommend the beef vindaloo. Perfect!

Nothing fancy and we've experienced some odd service here - but the food is tasty and it is good value for money

What a pleasant surprise!. One of the simple little treasures that are hiding in plain sight and usually go unnoticed, this authentic Indian restaurant had it all: delicious food in abundance, very satisfying service and a very reasonable price. Strongly recommended!
GregT
I like these guys. I always get it delivered, and its quick and tasty. Not much else to say really. Recommended.
Barbara
This was our favorite Indian but the service has gone right off. They're too busy building up their catering business so restaurant customers suffers. Not coming back.
Sal
Love this place one of our favourites tasty food at a great price. Not too spicy either which I like.
Brunny Girl
Nice, but not spicy. Went recently with some over chilli loving friends. We asked for all the food to be hot and said that we all loved chilli,. The entrees came out very mild so we again said that we wanted the mains a lot hotter. The waiter didn't seem to understand. That said the food was lovely.
We had Fish Tikka, Tandoori Fish, Beef Vindaloo, and Pumpkin Marsala. We shall go again, but come armed with some extra chilli in the handbag!
MissMelburnian
Terrible food marred by terrible service.. There are times you just know its just 'one of those days' for a restaurant, an exception to a general rule where most of the time the food is lovely, the service fairly consistent and the overall experience, pleasant.

But this was one of the times everyone involved came to a unanimous agreement that the entire experience, from the food to the service - or lack of it - came together in a terrible choir of disasters that led us swearing left, right and center never to patronise the place ever again, as well as letting everyone we knew never to visit lest they have their day ruined.

The restaurant interior is a fairly basic put-together mish mash of old and new furnishings - exposed brick walls hung with tapestries depicting Indian characters dressed in traditional garb, before being pierced by a large flat screen television at the end of the room above the doorway leading to the kitchen area streaming Bollywood music videos.

It was to be a birthday celebration on a weekend. The cake was handed to the waiter at the beginning, everyone was seated and we proceeded to order.

We ordered three mains, an entree to share, two sides and drinks for the table, deciding to save dessert for later.

The entree arrived, Tandoori Mushrooms. It was fairly decent and satisfactorily plated. The mushrooms lacked spice or seasoning, and was served with a spiced yoghurt chutney on the side.

We were served our drinks - mango lassis and soft drinks. The mango lassi was the absolute worst lassi I have ever had in my life. The yoghurt was gritty and lacked smoothness, as though it had not been sufficiently blended or even at all. The mango flavour reeked of artificial flavouring you would get from the Coles brand corner of a supermarket.

If this was not bad enough, we ended up waiting an hour and a half for our food to arrive, and watched as everyone else, not surprisingly, white people only tables, were served their entrees, their mains and even their desserts.
The Indians in my group who were somewhat offended but didn't want to make a big deal out of it, but said it was fairly common in some Indian restaurants where there were two classes of service - white service and 'Asian' service. It seemed their observations rang true as we watched the four tables around us, all of whom came after us, enjoy the various courses of their meal.

To make matters worse, our entrees were brusquely whisked from our tables WHILE some of us were still eating.

When we called the waiter over and enquired about our mains. He returned with our mains and sides without so much as an apology.

By this point the mood of the group had fizzled out, and we thought we could cheer up by tucking into an experience we thought would be salvaged by some good food.

We had Malai Kofta (Stuffed potato dumplings in gravy), Prawn curry, Pepper Chicken and two serves of garlic naan and pea pulao.

It was vomit inducing - I'm sorry to use such non-inspiring, ear popping words - but in all my years of enduring bad to excellent Indian food, the food was just absolutely unacceptable.

The pea pulao was coloured rice mixed with peas and had no seasoning. The Malai Kofta was more like stale Gulab Jamun (flour and sugar dumplings in sweet syrup) encased in mashed potato and coated with a generic, slightly sweet sauce that tasted nothing like actual Malai Kofta.

The Prawn curry was supposed to be a main, but had 5 prawns swimming in a curry of chopped onions.

The Pepper chicken, ironically, had very little pepper, and had the texture and taste of boiled chicken. Where were the spices?

The garlic naan was hands down, the worst garlic naan I've ever had in my life. It was like chewing on a sweet meat. There was no aroma of garlic, and if I didn't know better I'd have thought it was similar to a chocolate pizza - that you ate it for dessert.

We later noticed there was not Asian person in that restaurant, save for a very dissatisfied looking Asian couple sitting a few tables from us.

We did not finish our food. We decided we would not let bad service, bad food and a terrible experience dampen the birthday boy's special day - got up, paid the hundred odd dollar bill, asked for our cake and proceeded to troop out in search of a better feed.

Its offensive that someone can open a restaurant in this day and age and insult the average diner's knowledge of ethnic food. With so many truly authentic restaurants out there offering tastebud tingling, spice-rich experiences of Indian fare, perhaps slightly adapted to Australian tastes, why would anyone think of offering the F&B equivalent of food cooked by a tin of supermarket curry powder?

We know our Indian food, and if you want good Indian food, try Namaste on Lygon St, or even budget priced Zam Zam Cafe on Lonsdale St.

The lone waiter on shift that night, on a weekend, had the cheek to ask us how our dining experience was.

The cherry on top of that particular night at Tandoori Nights - was that our cake was returned to us soggy, slightly melted and lukewarm.

I guess someone had decided for us that it would be a just one Tandoori night, thankfully, not many.
Sammy
Best food I ever had in Melbourne best butter chicken in Australia garlic naan yummy
Shel Bee
Really great Authentuc Indian food here. The restaurant is BYO. As another reviewer said, it's not the prettiest venue but the service and food make up for the average aesthetics.

Disappointing service. We have been dining at tandoori nights for about a year now and have recommended it to friends and family. On a couple of occasions we had our orders mixed up, but usually they would get amended pretty quickly. Last night was the last straw unfortunately. We ordered a non-vegetarian dish and landed up with the vegetarian version.

When we raised it with the waiter, he looked at us as though we'd lost our minds and went on to say that it would take 'quite long' to replace to dish. We insisted on having what we ordered and waited for close to an hour for the dish. Everything else we ordered had gone cold by this time.

Other customers were getting their orders (including the same dish we had ordered), even those who ordered after us. We finally gave up and walked out and never received an apology. I think if they stuffed up our order, they should at least make an effort to rectify it ASAP.

It's unfortunate as I'd never recommend this place to anyone else in future. Their food is lovely, but honestly, service was rubbish.

Great Indian. My partner and I had the banquet and were very impressed! The butter chicken was amazing. We'll be back!
Gabby
Best Indian I've had out. I don't usually have Indian when I eat out, so it may sound biased when I say its the best I've had, but honestly it really was fantastic food! I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala with rice for $17.50 and was more than satisfied. I was the last to receive my meal on the table, but the waiter assured me it was on the way so I wasn't left wondering if he'd forgotten my order! I'd definitely recommend giving this one a go, especially if you're a fan of Indian cuisine!

Bring the old owners back!!!. Im absolutely positive there are new owners (maybe 1 year ago?) ..the food used to be the best indian ive ever had! but the food changed dramatically after several years of me eating here ..often!
Its the same menu and same good value prices most things under $10 but ...its like the chef is totally different and we used to see the same waiters in there every time and now its a different waiter every time ...which leads me to believe the owner is new.
I wouldnt say the food is bad but the food has become very average now ...a massive disappointment compared to what it used to be ....bring back the old owners/chef i say! ...untill then im starting to try other indian joints as ive given up on this one!

...for the price maybe give it a go?

Fair enough the place is nothing to look at but the food and the service just amazing!!! Love the place.
