Review The Village Bakery - Brunswick

Soooooo good!!! Amazing custard donut, the texture and density is the best I have had in Melbourne! Very spongy and fresh! Jam donut is too sweet for me but custard donut is perfect with a coffee! The Lotus cronut was so good, very puffy crispy pastry and the layers were well separated! It’s a bit too sweet as well, I like the Oreo cronut better because of the dark chocolate coating and the cookies and cream filling. There were so many items to choose from. There is always a line on the weekend so make sure you go early and prepare to spend sometime waiting! There were 3 staff working on the weekend and they were all very efficient! The coffee was very good too, love that it’s extra hot, perfect for cold rainy morning!

We arrived at 3 and were disappointed to find that they were not making any more coffee for the day (even though they close at 4). We took some takeaway pastries to eat at home and they were delicious. I am hoping to go back and try their coffee. We did go back for coffee several times because it was that good! The only downside is that their dine in isn't the best. You have to ask for cutlery, for sugar, for plates which they don't have and they put everything in a large box! And then we have to go back and ask for individual small boxes to eat out of. How are 3 or 4 people supposed to eat 4 cake slices/muffins/croissants etc from 1 large box? And some of the staff are not very friendly. The cakes and pastries are delicious.

Amazing bakery and highly recommended. I would give it 5 stars - the only flaw is the wait. The line is huge and usually only have 2 (maybe 3) staff at serving. As a result the wait is usually 10-15 minutes. I know it’s good for a business to show they’re busy and the psychological aspect of the wait demonstrates popularity to others. Furthermore, as customers the commitment to waiting enhances the privilege of receiving such great baked goods. However, I would sincerely recommend more staff to attend to customers. I would go here more often and am constantly put of by the long wait. You need at least 4 people serving during peak times. Maybe, it’s due to a lack of staff available however I feel like that’s not the case….

I love coming her morning and afternoon! Staff is always lovely, I had a great experience with tall, short haired brunette staff member, always lovely and greets me with a smile!! Love the cinnamon donut and a coffee or a more special cake slice!!

I see how your place brings in the customers. The fresh bakery food looks amazing. However, I am disappointed in the quality of the coffees we were served. Maybe there should be a focus on making a more holistic service.
Alan King
A great little spot with delicious cakes. We also got coffees that were good and noticed a plentiful supply of fresh baked bread. Friendly staff too. A nice Sunday afternoon out with friends 🍰☕😃

I have been longing to visit this place. Always seems crowded. Best place to enjoy coffee and bread. A bit costly for me though. But the quality seems great. Please do try. For the things that I ordered it came around $18.

I have recently moved to the area and was eager to try the much talked about Village Bakery. I arrived at 10:00 on a Sunday morning and was greeted with extremely loud heavy rock music. It was so loud I noticed many of the customers had difficulty communicating with the staff. I have to ask, who is the music there for? The produce may be good but with that type of atmosphere I will not be returning.

This place used to be amazing! Bought a 6 pack of hot cross buns, not realizing they were $10!! Was expecting some great HCB after this, but unfortunately they were dry and didn't have much fruit. I think I'd rather ones from Coles :/

The Chicken and Mushroom pie is simply the greatest melding of poultry, fungi and pastry ever conceived. Everything else is pretty fantastic, especially their weird af cronuts (banana and poppy seed? just bought one bc it's so pretty, but am curious as to how it'll taste), and the service is lovely. Always love hitting this joint up.

🤤😋 awesome bakery. I am currently craving a cinnamon donut or cronut. The Tsoureki is the best!!

Absolutely best bread corn and chilli I buy it from Yarraville farmers market and a vegan doughnut.... So goood ♥️

Wow!!!!! I wish they had a bakery like this in South Morang. You walk in and you have an abundance of fresh bread and mouth watering sweets. The service and atmosphere is absolutely fantastic. So many choices ...... it was definitely worth the drive. Thanks guys for all your help.

This place is a gem. Perfectly made coffee and such tempting sweets on offer, it's so hard to walk out with just what you came in for!

I had my 21st catering here, absolutely amazing! This place is my favourite, the food was so fresh. Anastasia made my cake just as I wanted! It was so well priced, I owe these women so much, I love them!!!!
Poppy Evagora Karkanakis
The most delicious tasting tarts in Melbourne, the only problem is choosing from all the amazing flavours on offer!
Maia Matsūchi
Absolutely obsessed with the vegetarian sandwich.
Tay Ray
Best pasties in Melbourne. And rolls. And pastries. And bread. And service!

Great for bread but we need more old Australian style baking for sweets...eg: cream buns, lamingtons and jam & cream sponge cakes. Cut down on the "fancy" doughnuts, cakes & tarts. Let's bring back some basic options. I think Brunswick can do without pretentiousness.

Definitely our favourite bakery. Even though we moved further away from it, we still go out of our way to get something yummy! I have mixed feelings about how popular it's becoming... It's fantastic, cause they very much deserve it - but at the same time my fiance and I liked having this amazing place that felt like a well-kept secret. Ah well, we still plan to have our wedding cake made by their incredibly talented pastry chef and we'll always return for our staples and the occasional creative treat!
Tom Anakos
Still a great bakery but your price increases are getting a little out of hand.

Bought the pies for a dinner party yesterday evening and they were a hit! Full of meaty goodness! I'll be back for sure.
Rose Altini
OMG not sure what to choose I can buy one of everything!

Very humble bakery just like the old day.....mmmm
Rita Zammit
Chunky beef pies wrapped in awesome homemade pastry! YUM!!!

The food at the village bakery is amazing. You can go there and know that you will get something delicious. I didn't like the long queues or that it was a little overpriced. I really like this bakery and it is a great place for lunch. I would definitely recommend this for a meal.
Orla Lee
I love their pastries and sausage rolls. My mum and I always go there when we have an activity near by. One of the best bakeries in Brunswick!
Ricky.katyal86
This place it amazing .you’ve to get it early otherwise you miss out on treats they have for day . Owners are so lovely and always helping around to serve the best and fresh. Love there brownies and almond croissant and must say even spinacopata’s are do simple and Delish <br/>Great coffee’s my weekend breakfast on budget go to

I’ve been searching for a good Cronut for so long, and I finally found it, here at the village bakery. So flakey on the outside and soft on the inside. The Nutella on top was a really nice touch. Size was much bigger than those at Rustica, and was only $6.
Rebecca Rafferty
The food here is great. I might say I’m a bit heavier due to how good the food is. Service can be a bit slow at times but they’re friendly.
Miss T.A
Yummy cronuts. Scrumptious cakes on display. Friendly staff. Delicious meat pies and pizza slices. Casual. Perfect place to eat in or take away

Great bakery in Brunswick West. They serve a variety of breads. I go weekly for a loaf of the dark rye which tastes great for days. I also enjoy their Greek biscuits which you can purchase in small boxes. <br/>They make a variety of rolls and sandwiches. I’m in love with the pastrami on rye. So delicious but it sells out so fast I often don’t make it in time to grab one. Please make more!!!!! Also the sausage rolls and part pies are tasty. I love that the jam donuts are packed full of jammy goodness. There’s also a variety of pastries and hole cakes for purchase.
Pippo
Great place for a mix of food and sweets.. more of a takeaway but plenty of space to eat in ... but unfortunately they don’t provide plates or proper cutlery to eat with only plastic flimsy cutlery. Makes the eating experience difficult ...
Brunswick Foodlover
Great pies and sandwiches from this place. I would have given 5 stars however today my prosciutto roll tasted like it was leftover from yesterday. I have had over 10 of these but today the roll was not fresh! I would appreciate a fresh roll for $10.50.
Esse Elle
Best bakery, just wish they made more pies because they sell out so fast....line is usually out the door by 1 pm. The lamb pie is delicious and I absolutely loce the variety of sweet pastries they have on offer.
Dinermelb
Love this place! Would definitely call this a hidden gem. It's located in an odd spot with no signage and you can't really see into the cafe, but once I entered it was buzzing! Ordered some lamb meat pies which were delicious. But the really star was the strawberry cronut. Perfect sweetness and softness of the entire thing. Custard donut was also quite nice! Would love to come back and try their other sweets and bread.

Went in on Saturday morning, quite a few people in line. The custard filled donut was the only thing we liked but any freshly made donut tastes good so you can get this anywhere. The Danish, croissant and salami pretzel were bland, and definitely not fresh. The pretzel dough was hard and a mission to chew, no flavour at all besides the salami. Danish tasted like a prepacked one from coles or woolies. The taste definitely did not justify $6 or $5.50 a piece. The coffee is very very weak and not a tasty blend. Tasted like a teaspoon of Nescafé and just warm milk to the top.
Misha
This bakery is delicious, unique, love the pretzels and the spanakopita. Bread is wonderful, really can't fault this place service is always great too. I just wish they would also cater to the little people that live in this area...Don't want them to be a Bakers Delight not just provide an option for the kids pleaseee!!! Maybe a token kiddy biscuit...or a cupcake? Doughnuts are wonderful here but huge!
Gdkf
Occassionally find these guys in docklands serving delectable slices on the sidewalk. Yummy! Everything is fresh and nice variety! Their spanikopita and olive pretzels were especially good! I look forward to trying their actual shop where I will no doubt find many more treats!
Just Jamie
This is a great looking place with an awesome selection of goods however the pastry its self was not to high standards as I'd expect a danish to be, crispy on the edges however in the middle raw dough! <br/><br/>The custard was nice but I can make a better one and finishing with strawberries was a great touch and taste however leaving the stalk in was not a good look or taste. <br/><br/>I would try it again as there was a wide range but not in a hurry!

What a shame. The pastries here are delicious!! Unfortunately that's the only positive comment I can muster. The staff are rude and inconsiderate. The coffee is blah as well. This place could learn from having some delightful staff who smile and greet you and who also serve in turn. I wasn't the only person here who had 3 or 4 other people served ahead of them who had just walked in the door. With an amazing deli literally right next door I won't be back

Absolutely love this bakery at Brunswick West, just opposite Union Sq. Village bakery has a good range of freshly made sour dough bread ( olives, dark rye, multigrain, fennel, pumpkin), tarts, donuts, cookies, pastries and cakes. They also have savoury options- house made pies, sandwiches, ham cheese croissant, quiche. Staff are always friendly and they open long hours 7 days a week! It is not as commercialised as other bakery and you probably will not notice there's a wonderful bakery behind the unassuming shop facade! It will be my regular stopover for fresh sourdough bread and sweets takeaway.
Bellatrixxy
The cinnamon donut and jam filled donuts are both vegan!  Enough said<br/>Pumpkin and cumin bread is also delicious.
Blake Hocking
I have tried a lot of doughnuts around Melbourne and this is a must try bakery for all things doughnuts and cronuts, my favourite is the custard doughnut, this is to die for! I have found the Cronuts change daily, Oreo cookies and cream is a Standout!

Great bread and pastries from here! I love the pizzas! Pies are excellent. Nice cheap yesterday's bread selection. Could do with some more coffee focus but I'd go here for food anyways. Friendly service too :)
Camille Peressini
Amazing cakes for special events! I had my 30th cake made here and it was a massive hit and reasonably priced which was a bonus. The pies are really good too!!
Nick Komo
Firstly have to say i love the pear cinnamon flourless cake!! And not because its flourless...<br/>This bakery has great food. Continental style, rustic bread and fresh. Nice gourmet pizzas, scones, cakes, sandwiches and even famous greek bougatsa! 😊

I was in the area looking for something for lunch and none of the shops looked very appealing from the outside. I noticed the faint outline of an espresso machine through the tinted front windows and thought <br/>'no... It can't be ? It looks like a warehouse. It's probably just a commercial bakery'<br/>So I went over for a closer look and well... I was stoked upon stumbling across this shop!<br/>Had a delicious sausage roll, a sweet custard donut and one of the best coffees I have had in a long time. I even went back in and ordered some take away sweets for later as the pastries they had on display were burned into my mind and I couldn't stop thinking about them.<br/>Everything was high quality, a thousand times better than what you find at chain bakeries.<br/>On top of that the service was fantastic and I was served by 2 different ladies who were both wonderful. It was a great pleasure finding this gem. It's not local for me but I'll definitely be back.<br/>I can't believe people are whining about the prices here either, you definitely get the quality that you pay for.<br/>
Claire
There's no question, the food is damn good. It's a bread lovers version of heaven and without a doubt the finest cheesecake I've ever had. Brough one to a party, people raved about it, everyone wanted to know where I got it. Just wish the prices were a bit lower, the breads have recently gone up so can't justify buying bread here everyday any more. Plus the door is very unfriendly for pram users, a few time we've been trapped half in and out. (Ouch). On the upside, staff are a friendly bunch..
ChasingSuns
Great food here, pretty much everything I've had here is delicious. Unfortunately they've jacked up their prices now so it's around as much/more as the inner city fancy bakeries, despite being in brunswick west. Service can be crap. I went in there 5mins before close one night. Two girls in front of me bought a couple of loaves of bread and because the young guy serving was closing he said "these are todays but I'll give you the 'yesterdays bread 50% discount'". They paid and I ordered one of the same. Full price. "oh? well...right can I get one of yesterdays loaves then?" he said "pfffft bit late for yesterdays bread mate". <br/>
Kat
This used to be my fav bakery but when I went to order a special cake things changed! I was told to come 2-3 days prior to the day I needed the cake so I thought 8 days would be sufficient. However that is not the case and I was 'rejected' by the so-called head pastry chef. I've never experienced such bad customer service as this and they know full well I'm a regular customer and have spent heaps of money at their bakery and have recommended them to all my friends. Never again.

This place is too good to be a bakery.<br/><br/>Vegie pasties are so delicious I can eat two.<br/><br/>Everything this place has to offer is mouthwatering.<br/><br/>They do close for a week after New Years but... They deserve it.<br/><br/>I'm thinking they should have taste testers- <br/>I would love to try everything they have to offer.

Below average service.  Ordered various pastries for a party, and they called up on the day of the party to say that there was a problem and the order was going to be late.  This issue was resolved, but when the pastries were picked up they were cold so I had to serve cold pies, sausage rolls and pasties to my guests. Not happy.

Had a baguette sandwich (the prosciutto one) there a few months ago and fell in love with the bread. That sourdough. Yum. The combination of fillings in the sandwich was a delight.

CRONUT HEAVEN!!!! I'm not a local to Brunswick but have stored the address in my GPS to find it every time I'm in the area. Different flavour cronuts every day. GET IN MY MOUTH!!!
Christian Kearsley-Pratt
By far the best bakery in Brunswick. Friendly customer service. Excellent selection of meat pies that are all delicious. The cronuts are where it's at though. Have had at least 8 different flavours (they have 2 each day) and each one is amazing. Love this bakery!!
DP
Best cronuts Iv tried ! And they come in so many amazing fresh flavours. ! :)

My local bakery  is always the place to stop when you need something.<br/>Cronuts, Rueben sandwiches, pizza, pies, bread what more could you expect.<br/><br/>The thing that brings me back most is the fact that the product is consistent and always looks mouth watering.

The best rolls of life. Honestly if I could eat one thing for the rest of my life it would be there rolls. This roll taste better than... Just almost anything i've ever eaten before. I can't describe it.. its like there is a party in my mouth and everyone is invited.<br/><br/>HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

This place is full of goodies. The Village Bakery doesn't look attractive at all from the outside, but once in, you won't know where to start looking. They have so much on offer! From savoury quiches to sweet tarts and cakes, artisan breads, Greek pastries, coffee...
Typical Food Blog
I’m glad I found The Village Bakery – it certainly was popular with a queue and the display cakes fast running out at 2pm.
Jessie
Delicious. My husband ordered a berry cheesecake from here for my birthday and it was amazing - as it always is. Love these guys, everything we have ordered from here has been perfect! Highly recommend.

Terrible Service & Fly in my Donut. The staff working in this shop need some training on customer service. Unattentive and every time i have asked to speak to the Manager they are not available. <br/><br/>Girl behind counter was dragging her feet and attitude not great.<br/><br/>Also found a fly in my donut one day! When i asked to speak to someone about it all i got was attitude and 'it's just a fly, pick it out'. <br/><br/>Noice. <br/><br/>You suck Village Bakery!
Jayne Jackson
The village bakery has been running for many years and it’s easy to see why. It’s not the place to visit if you’re on a diet or giving up sugar! I've tried most things and they have all been good. <br/><br/>Service has been a bit hit and miss over the years but recently it’s been ok.<br/><br/>Most of the food is open to the elements which makes for a lovely display however it also means that flies have a feast through out the day.<br/><br/>I also wonder about the chicken schnitzel sandwiches which sit in the warm air throughout the morning.
Tttjanna
Whenever I come here there seems to be a queue of people. Waiting times however are not unreasonable for the quality of goods on offer!! And very reasonably priced! Love the Turkish rolls, love the brioche buns, Danishes, donuts!!! Great place to pick up a cake if visiting friends and you want to bring desert. The service has always been great! Highly recommend
AH
Shocking service. Will not return purely because of the snobbish and disinterested staff
Sounot1
No customer service. I went in this arvo to buy a dozen sweets & the girl behind counter had not interest in serving, it was if she was doing me favour. She plonked the box of sweets on counter and she seemed annoyed having to serve.<br/>Will not be going again.
Bill.gouliotidis
West Brunswick Diamond. This place has an unbelievable variety of breads and pastries. I love the Greek leaning to some of their pastries but you can also get a cosmopolitan range.

Good price and yummy goodies!. Bought two cakes from here. Looked yummy and tasted even better! Everyone was asking where I got the cakes from. Highly recommended. Even it's out of my way, but will definitely come back to try their bread, pastry and all other goodies!

Mmm. Gimme more

Love this Bakery. From freshly baked bread to pies, quiches, cakes, tarts, baked treats. I have never been disappointed. You have to go there.
Lilgreenwheels
Really, really good bread. Although we often bake bread at home, we still go around the corner to the Village to get loaves for sandwiches and the odd occasion, as well as some spanakopita if one of us is too lazy to make lunch.<br/><br/>The four seed is one of the best seedy loaves I've gotten from a bakery. Their potato and rosemary bread is fantastic, too, though you do have to order it in advance. Another solid choice is their olive bread.
Mishka
Yum, yum, yum! Always get my Greek biscuits here, very moorish!!!
Brunny Girl
Olive bread and more.. Don't let the exterior put you off, this little gem has some of the best bread and pies in Brunswick. They also made my favorite bread, olive bread. Unlike the chain store bakery this is a great chewy loaf filled with olives. The pies are also a favorite at home with the pepper pie being voted as better than Boscastle.
Skinny Glutton
First to be gorged upon was a large flakey croissant. The croissant was airy with a crisp outer crust, best served with a cheeky slice of smoked cheese and toasted momentarily under a hot filament with a freshly brewed coffee. Sunday morning bliss. A lemon tart had my name on it. Playful tangy lemon centre encased in a soft buttery shell – this was devoured in two enthusiastic bites. It was the perfect balance between sweet and tart. I also chose a custard filled donut. Thick, sweet custard injected into a soft donut doused with sugar. At a paltry $2.40, I couldn’t resist buying a jam donut to relive my primary schools day of having bright red jam and sugar smothered around my mouth in the afternoon pretending to be the Joker. Buy a donut filled with thick, creamy custard from The Village Bakery and die happy.
