Review Awkward Mike's - Brunswick

IGuideU
Really tasty bacon and egg roll. 2nd coffee was better than the first. Friendly couple of fents serving. There is no kitchen so pumping out the meals with a little griller and hot plate. Not a bad effort.Cosy little place to relax for a while. $$
Take_A_Seat
Cute little family run business. Very warm and welcoming staff. Perfect coffee. The ham and cheese croissant hit the spot! Just what I needed on a cold and rainy winters morning. I'll definitely be back 😁
David
Great coffee and outgoing friendly staff. They didn't have a vegemite and cheese sandwich on the menu but they made it for me anyway. 😍
Heiko RUDOLPH
Cosy friendly coffee shop, food is good too.
Malcolm Young
Value prices, but rather basic dishes. You could definitely pull off most of the menu...

Must be a new owner or chef because our breakfast, although relatively cheap, it was very underwhelming. Bacon was cold and $4 for 1 slice and toast was not toasted, so I guess it was bread 😬. Coffee wasn’t great either, sorry guys need to step up your game :) (the guy was nice and friendly though!!!)

Over the past two years I have been to almost every cafe in Brunswick. Sort of a mission, in a good way. Recently a friend returning from living in Hong Kong asked me to take him on a cafe tour. Why is Awkward's my favourite of all the cafes? Yes, it's small and comfortable. Yes, the coffee is great. However it is the staff that make this place. They are really good at what they do and they put everything into it. Yes, this is my favourite cafe.

Love love love this place. I'm here every week. Delicious food and excellent coffee made by a couple of the loveliest guys, and in great, relaxed atmosphere. They've got great taste in music too :)
Anna Mildner
These two legends are sure to brighten your day! A true testament to old school hospitality, simple, friendly and exceptional coffee! Boy are we lucky to have this. Thanks for your cheerful banter and keeping us caffeinated... this place rocks

Across from the Lomond Hotel it’s one of our favourite cafes because of the two hero’s behind its magic ! Thank you guys - the coffee the food the company is the best!

Awkward Mike's is a refreshing homage to what the cafe scene of Melbourne should have originally tried to be before being hijacked by greedy, green eyed, entrepreneurs. The chill, friendly environment curated by the owners Andrew and Mike, who also happen to be Brothers, is a welcoming change to the pretentious world of coffee making. The coffee rocks, the small, although varied menu is fantastic and full of amazing flavours. And they're jumping into the home made soup winter scene, which I would highly recommend you try. Keep on keeping on gentlemen. You had my curiosity, grabbed my attention and you now have my appreciation.

Whether you're starting your day or finishing it...these lads will make your day. Great energy with unpretentious service which can be hard to find nowadays. Their chutney is to die for and should be on every dish. Yummmo !
Jarryd Fitzgerald

My favourite local! Amazing coffee, food and company every damn day! Does not get any better than visiting these two, super hard working guys for a caffeine fix and brekky. Consistent, quality coffee and produce served with a humble smile! You will not regret visiting Awkward Mike's!

The way a coffee shop should be, chilled, awesome coffee and great snacks... Plus two extremely awesome dudes behind the counter always having a laugh kinda makes it feel like the set of Seinfeld, just way cooler... 5 BOOM rating.!
Nas Kalandos
The best! Their coffee is the best in Melbourne!!!
Libby Neesham
Awkward Mikes succeeds where many Melbourne cafes get halfway. Unpretentious, funky, friendly, exceptional service, great coffee and yum food. Everyone is warmly welcomed and the guys flog their guts out to make it look easy. This is my outright favourite haunt in what is a crazy competitive market. I feel like I cheated somehow and landed the greatest local ever!
Stefan Traj
Awesome coffee and awesome staff, can't fault this place one bit!
Zoë Louise

It's been almost a year since we met these guys, always smiling and a great start to the day. Sorry we had to leave Melbourne :(

This established has new owners,I always like to give them a go as this is my local. I have dropped in twice, the new owner is eager to please,my coffee was not up to scratch despite my instructions. Don’t think that I will be back Totally different vibe

Easily one of the best coffee's I've had in Melbourne/Brunswick. The guys that work there are always super friendly and chatty without the pretentious hipster vibe you get in in the inner north. Have had some breaky items and the reuben and they were delicious. One of my fav cafe's! :)
Vicki
Love these guys - best coffee in Melbourne - brothers Mike and Andrew, always welcoming and good for a chat. Meatball wraps are soooo good!!
Satchmokennedy

10/10 would root again
Get the meatball wrap and a coffee and your golden
Make atleast one reference to something stupid and you've won at life
David Swinson
Gotta love the boys Michael and Andrew. The Brothers are great guys, lots of fun, always good for a chat and a laugh and make very good coffee. Snacks are available. Cakes are a good pick me up at 3:45 with a late Coffee. Highly recommend you drop in and see the boys.

The best cafe in Brunswick if not Melbourne. Its run by two of the most friendly brothers I've ever encountered. You just walk through the door and they immediately make you feel at home, its a chill atmosphere, the coffees great, and there's always some rad tune being pumped through the speakers. It's a guarantee you'll have a laugh. The foods unreal especially considering the tiny kitchen they whip it all up in. The whole menu is pretty great but the meatball wrap is def a must have! Keep it up fellas, cant wait to come back!
Jamie Woolway
Mike's is my go-to coffee joint in Brunswick. The guys running the shop are great, the coffee is great and they manage to make the most of their little kitchen to produce some dynamite meals. The cafe has been refurbished recently and now looks super sharp, keep up the good work fellas.
Aimee Edwards
Coffee is awesome and the food is even better. Mike and Andy have a way of making you feel right at home.
Haven't had a bad coffee or meal here ever.
Food was fresh and made with love

Would recommend 👌🏽
Odette Lo Castro
Absolutely love love love this place. The brothers are super friendly & accommodating. Food is amazing especially considering the small kitchen, you would never guess from the good they produce. Everything cooked on site. Best coffee in Brunswick! Keep up the good work boys

Pretty happy to have found this little gem around the corner from my new place. The Big Ben Rueben is huuuuge, super tasty and probably the best Rueben I've had in Melbourne! Get it! You wont regret it!
Candice Stothers
Have been here a few times now. Coffee is always solid, food tasty and plentiful and the staff is a bloody delight. Definitely become a bit of a ritual and I reckon you should try it out.
Matt H Kennedy
My home away from my current home-away-from home.
Cheery, hardworking brothers Mike and Andrew doing the cafe thing the old school 'everyone is family' way. No Northern Portlandia-esque pretence here, just proper coffee, hearty food and friendly banter. If you're ever near Triple R or CERES come get some.
Bree
Such a great atmosphere with tasty food to match. The guys are really friendly and genuine and make everyone feel welcome. I usually get the halloumi wrap which is really nice, I have also gotten the vegie wrap and the burrito which are both great as well. It has become a regular place to get lunch.
Yjia64ivan
the brothers deliver excellent service, quality food and fantastic coffee. First time visit.Real homemade food. Nice and simple manu. It's worth trying. 图片里面有个酸菜牛肉夹馍可好吃了
Nawksnai
Only purchased a takeaway coffee, but the guy who served me seemed nice, and the flat white I ordered, which is the only true of espresso-based milk coffee that I order, was a bit better than average.

Also, the food looked outstanding, although I can't comment on the taste! There was a Reuben sandwich on the menu that I was eyeballing like crazy.
Madeleine
Everything was awesome- atmosphere, staff's friendliness and food

I had the Hallumi Roll (Rosemary pumpkin, hallumi, olive tapenade inside a crunchy panini roll) and man, I love it!
Melaniejean13
My absolutely favourite coffee place in the local hood - the guys are always super friendly and make you feel welcome every single time. Plus they happen to make some seriously good coffee and delish food - magic jaffle is super tasty and a must try!
Jessica Panzarino
The food here is absolutely fantastic. All the flavours compliment eachother perfectly. The coffee is spot on. The company is brilliant as Andrew and Michael are clearly top blokes. Will be coming here often!
Will G
Great dudes, great place, AMAZING coffee and now a regular part of my weekly routine. Since the boys took over they've really lifted the vibe of the place and made it somewhere you want to hang out.
Vicky Taleska
Always love coming in here. The guys are so lovely and the food + coffee is always made with love. Gotta love coming in and being part of the conversations taking place in the cafe. Feels like I've dropped into a friends place.

Amazing quality food & coffee, amazing quality service! Get down to visit brothers Mike and Andrew at Awkward Mikes in Brunswick East for nothing short of an excellent experience!
Stephanie Kenny
Discovered awkward mikes today !! Had there famous P.L.T and it was so tasty !! The coffee is in my top 5 in Melbourne ! But it doesn't compare to the hospitality of the boys thanks mike and Andrew for the great service and a good time :)
Adrian Lushaj
This place is a must to who ever has not been down. Awesome coffee, great service from the boys here at awkward mikes.

And don't forget the "BIG BEN RUBEN" just wow
So much flavour in such a simple dish.

Amazing coffee, amazing breakfast, "Every little detail" AMAZING

If you haven't visited then you really should get down there!! If you are looking for something different and absolutely delicious this is the place. The coffee is ridiculously amazing, prepared with skill, care & love, and the hipster guys love everything coffee and it shows.
The atmosphere, the handsome guys running this little gem are very friendly and helpful. The menu is awesome. "HIGHLY RECOMMEND" *****

Dropped into Awkward Mike's today for coffee and a working lunch with a friend. I felt instantly comfortable and at home. What a great place, I felt that I could settle in and easily spend hours here... In fact our planned 45 min catch up ended up being a two hour chill out... Loved it! The owners were super friendly and made us feel at home. The coffee was great as was the food! Nice work guys! Only wish I lived closer so I could pop in more often!
Coco Eats
Had breakfast there on the weekend and we loved it! Small and relaxed cafe. The staff were super friendly and attentive, the coffee and food (we had Moroccan fried eggs and the rueben) was great! We will be back!
Chris Falvo
One of the most authentic & unique coffee shops I've been to in melbourne, Located in the trendy brunswick area. The coffee & delicious food is amazing!! its a must for all coffee lovers, owned by 2 down to earth lovely brothers. great experience

5*
Christopher James
Mike and Andrew are a talented brother duo delivering authenticity and quality in bunches. The vibe of this place is intimate and homey as the boys think of everyone as family. Beyond the excellent service is food and coffee that reflect the very same values. These guys are everything that is good about the Melbourne cafe scene, they are innovative, fun and best of all genuine guys who are passionate about what they do.

On such a special day for me today being my birthday, the boys generosity was very welcoming..awesome coffee and company..simply the best boys..
EMMA DUPES
Great place to go for food i recommend the Chilli Scramble it was amazing food, the whole menu is exotic and quirky things that i have never heard of before it was amazing food

Piano Piano, what an awesome little place! It has now been taken over by two brothers who have a passion for making people happy and this is so evident by their charisma and friendliness. They great you upon entry with a smile which I find nowadays is such an important trait to have. The coffee was perfect and the food was amazing! I was told that the two most popular items on the menu were the Saucy eggs and Shakshuka Eggs. WOW! They didn't disappoint! I will definitely be back to try their entire menu! Well done.
Johanna
These guys deserve a big gold star just for having spectacular coffee. Yes, the average quality of Melbourne coffee is excellent, but they far exceed that. A compact but cosy space that's welcoming even if you're just popping in for coffee, and a tempting and (thank you for this) simple menu- I can't wait to go back. Not everywhere is friendly to the "just coffee" customer either, but these guys are. Thank you!
Harvey Richmond
Love everything about this place!!!
The owners (brothers), are awesome if I'm anywhere near here I stop in every time.
Hook turn coffee is awesome.
And the bug Reuben is possibly the best sandwich ever!
Mr. Sasquatch
Our favourite place in Brunswick. The person below who thought the staff were unfriendly must have a personality disorder - it's the friendliest, cosiest place in Brunswick. We love it because it's so unpretentious, and of course the coffee and food is delicious. We always have a chat to the staff. Feels like having dinner at a friend's place. Great for takeaway lunch too - go for the haloumi roll or meatball wrap
Harvey
Awesome coffe. Been staying in brunswick east last few weeks fallen in love with this place.
Great guys (and girls) running the show always really happy.
Always great coffee and if you want a brilliant meal for relatively cheap $ you honestly can't miss this place!
Hellywelly
The Best Coffee. The coffee here is appropriately hot, smooth and sutiably milky. A combination that others get soooo wrong. Food is pretty fab too. Win win!
Jaz20
OMG what an amazing little space. I went there for the first time and I was so surprised at what they can produce in such a confined space, the food was amazing and the coffee was the best I have had since moving from Sydney. The staff were so lovely and welcoming, they really seemed to work incredibly well together and were so efficient with so little space, I was very impressed and will certainly be going back. Jaz

Out local favourite. So good we almost don't want to share it!

Bacon and egg rolls with a twist are my favourite.

Amazing, pure bliss . Defiantly coming back

Worst customer service and bad ventilation.. My partner has been wanting to try this place for a while so we decided to give this place a go.

Upon our arrival, we were not acknowledged, had to get ourselves a seat. We waited for a while at the bar before the barista came to take our coffee order just as I was getting the menu myself from their counter.

The staff spent most of their time talking to their regular customers rather than serving new ones. We did not feel welcome and in fact, we felt like we were intruding on their chat just by being there.

The food and coffee was good, but it was so loud, unwelcoming and we felt like we were a burden to the staff. We will not be coming back.
Grant Baker
Microwaved toasted sandwich? not cool...

Great cafe. Good coffee, friendly staff, tasty food, very well-priced. Will definitely be back!
Rachel
I wish it was open on a sunday so I could soak up more of the deliciousness that is this cafe. Love the meatball wrap, coffee and cosy atmosphere. Staff are friendly and make you want to return. Satisfying.
Lauren Colbert
Wrap it up. Best meatball wraps EVER. I don't know what it is - the meatballs are so tasty and not too crumbly, but not too dense. There is an abundance of cheese, but not too much that it overwhelms the meal. Just the right amount of spinach (which I usually hate, but actually eat in this!) with a hint of lemon. To. Die. For.
The coffee is super tasty and the right temperature - none of this luke warm crap.

Highly recommend.

(Oh, and the funky barista is lovely!)

Cute and cosy!. This little gem nails it every time! The coffee is ALWAYS spot on and the lovely man with the trendy do is always so chirpy and chatty, it makes for the perfect start to your 9-5 day!

p.s Even the takeaway coffee cups have a cute edge to them!!!! Ahhhh it's the little things...
Mel
Amazing. Great food, great coffee, great service. We had lunch on Saturday and it was amazing, even considering they only had 2 staff on.
Lily
Great coffee, awesome friendly staff, excellently run. We are just new in Melbourne and this is definitely our new regular!
BrunsMelb
Hmmm.... Closed on Sundays and they complain no one goes in there? Please...
Allie
Cute little cafe. Piano Piano seems to be the forgotten middle sister to the tiny New Day Rising round the corner, and the newly expanded Milkwood across the road. It never fails to amaze me that Piano Piano, which serves consistently tasty and perfect temperature coffee, is never as busy as the other two. I don’t know whether it’s the location or the fact that their outside seating bench and crates don’t spill out onto the footpath enough for people to realise it’s open, or whether people actually choose to patronise over-rated dives over nice little cafes with friendly staff.

The staff at Piano are lovely – they’re friendly and welcoming, and adapt their chattiness to that of their customers. I once went in just as they were about to close, and somehow walked out with a bunch of free muffins and pastries.

Unfortunately they’re closed on Sunday, and seem to close on public holidays too. Great little café though.
Dan Da Man
Not open Sunday.
Sparkly Crystal
Great place!. If you've ever spent anytime in Japan then you may be familiar with the concept of the "regulars or hostess bar" a bar where people come along for some chat as well as food and drinks. Piano piano is kind of like the cafe version of this, if you go there a couple of times it likely you'll encounter some friendly banter with the staff and perhaps even other cafe goers. Not to mention that the food and coffee are really great too! I like the down to earth, friendly atmosphere which is why I'd say it's my favorite place in this area.
Denni
Pun alert - Hitting the right notes. Another of the cafes up my end of town. I'm a bit spoiled for choice so took me a while to get as far as this one. Really enjoyed my coffee and my stuffed mushrooms. Himself had baked eggs. Portions on the smallish side but certainly reasonably priced for what you're getting. Good variety on the menu, I fully intend to return to sample some jaffles. Staff are incredibly friendly, scary in a good way. All in all a good option for a Saturday brunch, assuming you're not lucky enough to be able to spare the time for these guys midweek. Not open Sunday, could be to their detriment, as the regulars all squeeze into Milkwood or New Day Rising.
Dr. MAC
Great food, coffee and chai wonderful Atmosphere
PiZzzzzzaa
Better than I thought it'd be. Food is great - the saucy egg far exceeded my expectations; service was prompt and friendly. Only thing I'd change is their exhaust fan - don't expect to leave the place without your clothes smelling of your breakfast for the rest of the day....!
AskAnn
A neighbourhood secret gem!. This place is a neighbourhood secret gem with excellent coffee and fresh treats including breakfast staples along with meatballs wraps and fresh baked slices. A great place in a growing hip area - nearly too good to share!
Caz
Friendly and quick!. I just popped in quickly one day because I was STARVING and about to head off in the car for a few hours. I got a meatball and rocket wrap with some form of chutney and it was amazing. Service was friendly and welcoming which was surprising as I thought it was a 'trendy/hipster' joint which tends to lean towards shocking service. They were super quick and I had my toasted wrap and was out the door in less than 10 minutes.

Definitely high on the list for a breakfast repeat.
Sharyn Honey
Couldnt get into Milkwood (also good), so tried Piano. So glad we did. Great coffee and quick service. The breakfast burrito was fresh and great for a change to the increasingly cookie-cutter Melbourne breakfast menus. Friendly fun vibe to boot.
JuliaGulia86
Amazing organic coffee, fun and friendly staff
Sofia Levin
Piano Piano’s humble décor lend it a comfortable atmosphere with a focus on feed and coffee.
