Review The Brunswick Green - Brunswick

Serena Huh
Love the gigs they had there. Astrovillain was the best this Wednesday night. I hope we get to see more of them at the Retreat. Didn't have dinner there, but the menu looked really exciting to me. Will try some sometime.

Good place to go for a drink and catch up with friends < 33

The food is good and the outdoor area is extremely spacious. I was there for a friend's birthday and our table directly under a speaker, which made it difficult to have a conversation. If the volume was reduced, it may have made it less annoying as I don't appreciate having to shout at people to speak to them. Very cool and hop. I may have outgrown these types of places but in my younger years would make this my local. Highly recommend.

Great place, top notch beer garden but you have to know your time slots. Quiet beers and a catch up: during the day. At night it turns into a social club in the best way.

All in the name of the place - every time I come to the retreat I wonder how I got here. The lovely beer garden out back and booths near the bars give life to this place, which is good because I die inside whenever I come here. I love to hate this place but it will always manage to invite my soul.

We ate a simple meal in the bar, on a perfectly ordinary Thursday, and both the food and the beer (a Belgian IPA) were superb. It’s a rare combination in Brunswick. Great service! Get the chips!

My friend organised her birthday party here at the Amelia Shaw Bar and it was awesome! Great service and Kerry was very helpful. An absolute legend.

Quiz night is great, good prices, decent food. Got drunk left my bag there and they kept it till morning. Would recommend

Fantastic pub with awesome staff. Beautiful beer garden. There is no better place in Brunswick!

Really great atmosphere and layout. Good food, great range of drinks. Sadly one of the bar staff made everyone feel really uncomfortable. Spoke down to us, corrected our manners then got peeved when people would request a drink (politely) without first saying 'hi, how are you?' (As indicated by her agressive 'Hi, how are YOU?' when asked for a drink) which was odd because she'd been treating everyone like a giant inconvenience all night. Not okay. If you can't deal with people then stick to accounting. Really put us off ever coming back to an otherwise great place. The other staff were excellent, helpful and had good knowledge of their wares.

amazing place to chill! live music is a must and child friendly!!! YAY!

Recent trip to Melbourne included an arvo visit to this establishment. The bar staff were super friendly and knowledgeable when it came to beer recommendations (very impressed). Tasted some superb beers in the outdoors area which was spacious, clean and an all round relaxing place to catch up with friends. Well done Brunswick Green and thank you. One of my holiday highlights-I will return.
Olivia Jenner
Bar staff are happy to completely ignore you if their mates come in and want to order. Very disappointing

Had a top time here and can't wait to return, few mates and our partners had an awesome experience and James from behind the bar had a great personality ... will be back
Georgia Clark
My new favourite! Fantastic atmosphere, the friendliest and most helpful staff in Melbourne! Beautiful beer garden too.
Eloise Crossland
Great venue, excellent tunes and eclectic decor,..

Super cool pub with great Jazz musicians: Michelle Nicole, Paul Williamson, Frank, Sam Le Mann, ect... Love your guys. Thanks for the great Thursday nights.

Great beergarden, band and atmosphere!.

Cash only?! Are you serious? It’s 2017! Get with the times and pay your fair share of taxes. Tax avoidance is the only explanation for not accepting cards. Well, that and cashing in on the excessive fees collected from the ATM conveniently located next to the cash only bar...

Most of the staff are rude, for instance we went on a Sunday few weeks ago and some guy with long hair and an accent asked my mate to turn his hat around?? He said it was an unwritten rule.. he was very rude about it numerous times, yet others had ridiculous hats on, we drank here once a week till this happened.. so this guy lost your business couple hundred bucks a week from our group.. Other then that great bar and lay out, needs louder music outside though..

Old school Brunswick. Well not as old school as the families and odd balls that settled here many decades ago but good enough for me. Grungy, retro with a good selection of beer, great tunes and good crowd. Love coming in here coz it's not pretentious at all and it's still my kind of cool.

Venue is very nice, lots of room and a great courtyard out the back. Staff were pleasant and service was prompt. However, the food leaves a lot to be desired. The chicken burger was mediocre at best with chips that were not very good. Price was reasonable for the quantity.
Little Pink Piggy
Good sangria. Crap that you can only pay cash!! Which establishment does that in this day and age?? Service was also so so................<br/>.<br/>

The best pub in Brunswick, with a gorgeous green garden. Even can't find a table in the garden, so we have to sit inside. Even though, love the phenomenon there.
Nikki Cikes
Come here for the gorgeous beer garden. The bar from the outside can seem a little shabby and unassuming, but don't judge a book by its cover. Love coming here for a chill night to drink a couple of ciders (decent selection, too) and catch up with friends. There are outdoor heaters above tables too which is great for cooler nights.

Lots to look at in this quirky bar, chilled vibes, and an array of drinks to choose from. Convenient location near trams and train station on Sydney Rd.

Depends what you're here for. I love the range of beers, always some sort of limited edition craft beer to try and it's a lovely place to grab a drink with friends. Food however is not great. It's cheap and good sized meals, just pretty bland and average. But the staff are lovely and it's a great place

Hands down the best pub in Brunswick. I love this place. The staff are super nice, the beer garden is lush and green and wonderful. Every time I go there I make friends. I've made so many friends there! My best friend and I love this place to bits, and will be loyal weekly customers for as long as we or they are around. Prices are very decent and the food is solid decent pub food, nothing fancy but good tucker and inexpensive.
The Critic's Critic
This is a Brunswick institution. Civilized drinking with civilized patrons in a well presented casual setting. You're not a local unless you've been to the Green. No hoo-ha here, just pleasantry and cool live music on some evenings
Bianca Roberts
Such an understated facade truly deceives this place's pleasant energy. A quirky interior with comfortable plush furnishings opens onto a spacious beer garden, which is always busy but retains a feeling of intimacy as benches are spaced nicely. Food on offer is simple but well done, would recommend the mushroom burger.

Only place in Melbourne I specifically visit for the best Pear Cider! Definitely an iconic place in Brunswick with awesome collection of memorabilia of all sorts! Great for a date night. Interior includes a fancy fireplace and comfortable seating. Service is great! The bartenders are always knowledgeable and accommodating. Will be in again soon, for sure.
Gourmet John
Great beer garden. Average priced drinks. Food is not brilliant. Worth a post work visit. Music is not so loud so you can have a discussion.

I love the green. Good selection of drinks at decent prices, good service from friendly bar staff, lots of comfy and relaxed seating, fireplace in winter and the terrific beer garden for the warmer weather. Great place to relax with friends for a drink.

Won't ever be back.I regularly visited with my partner. When I showed up with a couple of mates we were told that there's enough men inside already and were denied entry. We were sober and well behaved, additionally the pub was half empty which puzzled us. Nevertheless we were told by the ignorant bouncer that it was a decision of the management, none of whom would come and speak with us. Don't waste your time, go to the retreat instead, they welcome both sexes.

You'll KNOW you're in Brunswick when you're here. The Green is a cool place to go if you like seeing ultra-local talent. It's not just musos, but other performing artists, not all of whom are ready for prime time. But hey, it's cheap and who needs lots of polish all the time? I rate it with the Spotted Mallard as one of those places to go if you're really into the Brunshipster vibe. There's an "eye-kitsching" collection of weird stuff on the walls. You might feel like you're drunk even before you sample some of the alcohol. Good selection of wines by the glass in a joint that looks like it would be more a beer-and-cocktails place.
Scott Lopa
The owner makes this place. Yes, staff could smile a little more but drink variety and prices are spot on. Great atmosphere and one of Melbourne's best beer gardens
Eddie
Hit up Brunswick Green, check out the beer garden and you won't be disappointed. Perfect for that warm summer's evening and to catch up with your friends.

Good food and great prices. Would go back.

Unfortunately I didn't have the best experience with the owner. It was my birthday and I had booked a table for about 20 people in the beer garden at 7pm. Most of my friends were there at 7 and three of my friends were late due to other commitments. The owner decided to let two of them in and make the third guy stand outside. When I went to request that my friend be let in, I was told by the owner who was very agitated that he was not going to risk losing his license and that if my "friends respected me" they would have been here at 7pm. He then said that he would only let my friend in once people had left. So I decided to stand out with my friend and keep him company, and after about two minutes the owner let us in. It's pretty terrible being spoken to in that manner and it's worse when someone makes comments about your friends. I've always loved the brunswick green, however I won't be visiting that place anytime soon. This dude was definitely on a massive power trip and it was pretty frightening having him shouting in your face...

Still quite disturbed that a peace lovin woman of 53 could upset staff here and be told to leave. Take your drinks when your back is turned then complain gently and humorously with bar staff is enough to get the gorillas surround you and escort you out
Belinda De Vos
What disgusting service!. The bartenders were so stuck up and rude. It was almost like we had walked into their private residence rather than into a public bar to spend money. Get over yourselves Ladies!
Mazlin13
Unfriendly. Maybe it was late at night and the two ladies behind the bar were tired.....There were six of us, ages ranging from 40 to 60. We only asked for cocktails and the stern response was "We DON'T do cocktails!" I'm the 60 year old who felt like a naughty little schoolgirl for asking. She reminded me of a British version of Nurse Ratchett from "One flew over the cuckoos nest"<br/>We won't be going back........Ladies, a smile won't kill you!

Brunswick's best pub!!. A great quirky trendy pub that will totally surprise you.<br/>From the front it is a converted shop front, once inside though pass through to the back past walls of rock stars, postcards, spoons, clogs and so much more to a cosy open fire where red wine suits best on a cold night.<br/>Step out the back and find a large beer garden best suited to sun and pints of beer!<br/>The home of Brunswick Bitter in my opinion and a pub that can not be missed.<br/>Check out my YouTube video on the Brunswick Green over at PozmanTV.

Great spot, but needs a menu change. This has been one of our semi- regular pubs for about a year now. The food is reliable and good, not overpriced. Happy pub grub that is tasty and filling. The selection of beers is a little limited in comparison to other pubs in the area, although all in all this pub makes a very good first impression. Atmosphere is great and very tasteful. However, if you live locally and feel like dropping in every so often you WILL get bored with the menu, which has changed little in the year I have been visiting. Food's great guys, but myself and several people I have talked to think it's time to have a freshen up of the food range.
James
Cool place. Really cool bar in Brunswick, good music and drinks
Hayley
Not gluten-free friendly. Not a single menu item is gluten free and the staff member behind the bar was smug and unhelpful. Too bad if you're coeliac, you go hungry. I finished my drink and then went somewhere else.

Can't decide if I like it! Been 3 times in 3 months. 1st was a very busy Sat night - waited 50 mins for our meals, which were small and overly salty. Then went with friends and had a typically standard no dramas pub meal. Then went last week and enjoyed an exceptional fish special - swordfish with some kind of pesto on top and blackened corn on the side. Absolutely stunning. So I really can't decide if I like it or not. One thing which IS annoying is full on heavy metal music while you eat at 8pm... Obviously the place has a full-on pub vibe, and it is a pub not a restaurant, but they could tone it down a bit until the diners clear out. Even the young, hip, heavy tattooed couple next to us were not amused by the music selection!!
Jesspo
Friendly!. The Brunswick Green staff are fantastically friendly - always ready to greet you as soon as you step in the door. A great vibe, fab couches to lounge about on, a nice sprawling beer garden, interesting acts on, and a limited but satisfying menu. Ate a burger here last night with a friend, and left happy and full!

Perfect pub atmosphere. Excellent fit-out inside and perfect beer garden; the place has culture and character, so much better than the over-renovated and modernised pubs taking over. Whoever decides the music playlist has the best taste on Sydney road (although i'll concede this may be subjective).
Glassed
Great choice of beer and cider. Heaps of indoor & heated outdoor seating. Reviews whinging about smokers and rude staff are lame & both should be glassed.

Winter warmers. Brunswick Green currently offering warm cider (Rekorderlig Winter Cider) - delicious for winter
David
Terrible terrible terrible terrible service.. Every person we dealt with was entirely rude.. We were refused the drinks we wanted half an hour before closing because they didn't think we could finish the drinks in time .. Plenty of other great places to drink in Brunswick where you won't feel like your being done a favor while drinking there. The manager in particular needs to find a new career involving minimal human contact!
MelbourneMiss
Great atmosphere. I really like this place. Wonderful atmosphere. Great staff. Bring the repellant however if you are prone to mossie bites (the garden bit is lovely - but attracts mossies).
Maiko Nakamura
I love the place!! very relaxing, friendly service, Food are not too bad. I don't like some bars and pubs where music are too loud. It's the best place for catching up with friends for chat:)
Foodie73
Relaxed atmosphere. Really enjoyed the brunswick green last weekend <br/>sydney road offers a couple of nice places and the BG is one of the more relaxed ones. music is great, not too loud (allowing you to have a conversation without yelling at the person next to you) and also appealing to a bit of an older audience. <br/>beer garden area is nice, food is ok.
Siew-Li Hammond
A great atmosphere although the beer garden isn't great for non-smokers, which leaves nowhere to sit and enjoy a meal. On that topic we came to see the Variety Collective show which was fantastic and I would strongly recommend it!!! We arrived early to have a meal first, the food took twice as long to come out then we were originally told which resulted in it arriving as the show started, instead of letting us eat at the show, the waitress was extremely rude and kicked up an uneccesarily huge fuss denying us entry until we had finished our food. This was frustrating as there were other people already eating in the audience. As a result we had to guzzle our food whilst standing at the bar (as there were no tables). Would recommend the show but would also suggest grabbing a bite to eat elsewhere!

A cool hangout. I feel old saying that I prefer this joint to the Retreat, but this venue is much more relaxed but not because an older crowd hangs out here. Good range of drinks (in bottle), ample space so that you aren't shoulder to shoulder. Order in pizzas as the evening grows longer, and chill out by the water feature.
Fatime
Cheap pizza on tuesdays. The pizzas is pretty good and generous with their toppings However, the place smells rank! Its ok if there's no where else to go.
Brunny Girl
Great courtyard. A great spot for a sunny day. The calamari is always fresh and tender.
Suedy
Veggie friendly pub food! Yay!. I was dubious, but needn't have been. I had the leek and fetta pie here the other day and it was sooooo yummy. Also - cheap drinks to wash it down! The food was cheap too. And the service was friendly. For the pub style of the place I really haven't been able to fault it on any fronts thus far. Definitely going back for a mid-week feed and a drink as regularly as I possibly can.

Best pub courtyard renovation in Brunswick. The brunswick green goes from strength to strength. They must have a good staff hiring policy because over the years I've visited the changing staff have always been hands down the most friendly & easy going in the area. The courtyard renovation makes summer drinking in Brunswick super enjoyable, only thing missing is the old pool tables???
Fake Grass
Cool place. Some of the drinks could be cheaper, eg. the Swedish Cider at $12/bottle is a bit stupid when its $6 at IGA down the road! Bit of an excessive mark-up!
Deborah Pacheco
Great outdoor beer garden area. Music is lazy and great atmosphere on weekdays. Friendly staff. Food ok. Cash only payment.

One of the review's is for a different place. I forgot to add, I am pretty sure gnat's review is about the Green Refectory, a cafe on Sydney road, not the Brunswick Green the pub on Sydney Road.<br/><br/><br/>-----30 Jan, 2011-----<br/><br/>Not bad food, good beer garden. Small but eccentric front bar with a great beer garden if you can get a seat (which we couldn't at 8 pm on a Friday night. The menu is small and dishes were average to good - pizza was disappointing but fish and chips and veg pie were nice (although both dishes could do with a few more chips). Friendly staff.
Amelia Schmidt
Seafood.... The battered calamari with wasabi mayo is pretty incredible, especially with a cider and a nice li'l jazz band playing accompaniment.
Gnat
Good lunch food, terrible design. This popular little place makes great lunch food- soups, sandwiches and a delicious array of homemade pies and filos and great sweet treats. Their sponge cake and vanilla slice are old skool awesome. You'll also get cameos from jelly cakes and other fete-y type treats.<br/><br/>Reasonably priced. Coffee ordinary. Annoyingly crowded due to the most ridiculous design. I cannot believe it hasn't been changed over the years- literally nowhere to stand and wait that isn't in everyone's way, people at tables near the door getting constantly bumped. Grrrr!<br/><br/>They'd do a smashing business putting up an awning, opening to a hole in the wall for coffee and serve take-away-ers on the street, freeing up some room inside. <br/><br/>Considering they have pole position right on the tram stop and the crossing the potential is massive, so long as the barista could make a takeaway coffee in less than 15 minutes...<br/><br/>Long term staff need a holiday. Sour faces despite a sweet work environment cranking out tunes and carrying on like they're out socially with their mates while at work. Indeed it seems customers are a bothersome intrusion to their high jinks behind the counter.<br/><br/>Every time I go I get so irritated I veto it for a few months. But then the sweeties lure me back...

Eating just interupts the drinking. What a cool place..... I know it's been around for a while but only recntly introduced to me by a friend, super friendly owners, happy staff, cold beer...... food what food?
Steve
Potential. A bit of a brief menu but expected since you'd go here more for the nice surrounds and a drink. One of the maybe two Vego options, I tried the Tofu wrap served on a bed of greens and chips. Nice dressing and fresh greens but the chips were tepid and I would have preferred the wrap to be something other than dry Pita bread. My friend seemed to enjoy the Fish and Chips.
