Review Dood328 - Brunswick

Joanne Lung
Despite the mixed reviews recently I wanted to experience this place for myself. Wedged between two trendy spots, this place is reminiscent of the old school cafes. The Egyptian Poached Eggs consisted of two steaming and slightly over-poached eggs, resting on a pumpkin and potato rosti, served with a generous sprinkling of dukkah, rocket and chilli jam. The dukkah made the dish so much more interesting while the chilli jam added some punch. This place isn't much to look at but the booths and seats are comfy and the service was on point. There were only three other customers when I entered so there was not much ambiance. There are so many great cafes in competitive Brunswick - for me this place lacks the hook to draw the crowd or repeat visits.

Breakfast with champions at Dood328: Chia Bircher, fruit toast and soy cap.

Bacon and eggs were delicious.... Gluten free options available. Check out the booths in the back with the cool comic books wall paper.

Tasty coffee and friendly staff. The seats on the street get lovely sunshine in the morning

Giving the stars for delicious home made crumpets, caramelised fig preserve, great toast and addictive real proper jam. Love the sunny front, though if you want a retro booth situation that is also the go.

Finally got to visit Dood where's my car in Brunswick. Nice little cafe, but with some comfy seating and even a few booths for larger groups. Service was pretty solid considering there was a first day trainee on the floor. Coffee was OK. Little too hot. Food was pretty good. Had a lot of interesting stuff on the menu, so will have to go back to try them. I think the best part was the price was a lot cheaper than most cafes in Melbourne these days.

Went to go to Ray's next door, but it was insanely packed and the staff were a wee bit cranky (public holiday blues presumably.) Dood328 offered an oasis, an almost empty space despite people spilling out from next door. I'm really shocked more people don't give the Dood a chance when Ray's is busy - the food was lovely, the coffee fine and the staff were really friendly and chilled out. Herbed mushrooms with gluten free toast was absolutely delicious - really herby and interestingly flavoured, with a perfectly poached egg and really good GF toast. The coffee was nothing to write home about but still did the job. Dood definitely doesn't have the hipster ambiance of Ray's, but if you can get past the faux-chandeliers and "My Prerogative"-era Britney on the stereo, it's a really acceptable substitute.

Ordered via Deliveroo. Haloumi and Freekah salad was only half the ingredients advertised. Dressed with a bland oil, no trace of citrus. There was no cranberries at all and a teaspoon of Freekah at most. Decent amount of haloumi, apple and walnuts at least, but overall very disappointing.

Gorgeous hipster food at relatively hipster prices, nice hipster atmosphere for local and non-local hipster visits, could probably do with less direct hipster name calling to "hipster" customers but otherwise a delightful hipster xp. #hipsterpride

I remember going to this place years ago when it opened. Back then it was a little gem even before it was cool to eat out for brekkie in the north And today, it still is a little gem...the food was delish, full of flavour. I had the herbed mushrooms with poached eggs...the Dood behind the counter made me a perfectly smooth soy latte that I had a second. And the service was with a smile. So thanks Dood, I'll be back!

Easter Sunday and it's our 1st wedding anniversary. Having brekkie home delivered was an absolutely amazing way to start the day (and a beautiful surprise for my hubby). Thanks so much! Was the first, but won't be the last time we visit/order in. :)

Fantastic gem of Brunswick. Great food. Lovely service. Definitely making it a regular place to visit. Nice job everyone.

Best coffee in Brunswick and the best guys behind the counter.

Simon can you get me a takeaway to Peru. Hanging for a good coffee

Hey guys just to keep you in the loop. Dood328 is open everyday this holiday period Mondays, Christmas, Boxing Day. Everyday. :) so don't be shy we are here for you. Lol.

So great, so friendly! Very trendy and YUM!

Excellent portion sizes. Zucchini and corn fritters were well cooked - crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside with good balance of ingredients/flavours. Smoked salmon portion very generous compared to other cafes. Fresh ingredients, would come back again.

Food decent (but had a hair in it). Coffee okay (but was spilt on the saucer and not cleaned). Service prompt (but no cutlery or napkins with food). Won't be returning.
Joe
Ordered a espresso.............. received a cup of thin coffee filled to the brim of a espresso cup.
Ordered eggs Benedict.........received eggs Florentine. Average at best.
Told the waiter I wanted to pay for my expensive, tasteless breakfast on a particular bank account. He processed payment on paypass.

Eating a packet of fruit loops with a beer in my car would have been a more pleasurable experience.

Wedged between two other 'trendy' cafes, we were really happy with our choice to go here. Good coffee, lovely meals, great value for the price. Try the Egyptian eggs. We'll be back

Dood 328 is a small comforting classic indie cafe located alongside the fellow cafe competitor of Rays on Victoria Street Brunswick. This cafe although only being small with a few large tables at the front and only a couple of booths situated towards the back of the cafe near the kitchen creates a friendly relaxed environment, allowing customers to really enjoy the great service and ambiance Dood 328 offers.

Entering this cafe on a beyond freezing Melbourne Sunday afternoon a friend and I where greeted by a lovely waitress who seated as in one of the booths and presented us with menus.
We ordered hot beverages of choice being a long mac and a chai latte that arrived quickly. The Long mac was nice and hot but could have been slightly stronger. The chai latte was defiantly a winner though. The creamy texture of the aromatic drink was balanced perfectly with spice and sweetness.
After determining what our tastebuds craved for the awfully cold weather of the day we ordered classic winter dishes of the Quinoa porridge and the potato and leek soup with charred bread off the specialised board.

Our food arrived looking homely and delicious with steam escaping from the dishes.
The soup was on the salty side and the added cheese on top probably didn’t do the dish any favours yet dunking the smokey crisp bread into the soup certainly did keep the palate excited. The soup was of a good consistency being nice and smooth with no large clumps of potato getting stuck in ones teeth.
The Quinoa porridge cooked in almond milk with poached pear and rhubarb, slivered almond and vanilla yoghurt was certainly the more preferred dish. The porridge was of the perfect consistency not to watery and not at all gluggy. The quinoa was cooked to utter perfection along with the soft poach fruits that maintained there shape when pulled apart. The yoghurt on top added sweetness to the dish to balance the tart rhubarb and the addition of the slivered almonds complimented the dish adding textual crunch.
After the first chai latte being so fabulous we ordered another as we indulged in Dood 328 magnificent food admiring the unique interior walls of the cafe that where lined with comic strip wall paper.
Dood 328 is a lovely cosy cafe that is sure to leave one with a full belly and not burn a hole in your pocket. The more than pleasant staff that occupy this trendy cafe truely ensures that ones dining experience is utterly enjoyable.

Great food & service. Gotta try the chicken snitzel focaccia, it's amazing!!!! 5 people in our group of 10 have it each Sunday! Milkshakes good too.

Read raving reviews of dood328 online. Apparently were in relation to previous owner's efforts. First impressions was just another brunswick cafe. Closer inspection revealed tattered dirty seats, kitchen staff in civilian attire and barista sneezing into his hands and continuing to serve drinks and food without washing. Scrambled eggs rubbery and unseasoned. Bacon burnt and dry. Toast unbuttered and inedible. Ordered the hash browns as a $4 extra, turns out they're straight out of a packet. Disappointing. Won't be going back and certainly won't recommend it to anyone I like!
Notanothercafe
Staff were friendly and food was okay, I ordered the pumpkin and potato rosti, which was a little soggy inside. Hopefully the new owners will get the hang of it soon!
Lida Cheung
Lovely service, decent homey food and nice atmosphere. I ordered a big breakfast, which ticked off everything I love in big brekky - mushrooms, beans, tomatoes, bacon, etc. Can't go wrong with Eggs Benedict either :P

Awesome every time!. Great coffee, great staff and excellent salads!

So good!. Consistently great coffee, and the batista was a real friendly chap! Will definitely recommend it to everyone

TLDR: Make sure you try the awesome onion relish. Why? Because it’s awesome!
Twilighttaggers
Fantastic. Exceptional customer service every single time. Really yummy food although most dishes are huge (could easily be halved and you'd still be full). Definitely keep coming back here over and over!

Fantabulous. Wow, what a great cafe, amazing breakfast. Had the zucchini fritter which was perfectly cooked! The coffee is a winner, had seconds which is rare for me.
Totally recommended. Rupert.

The best in Brunswick, by far!. The best coffee, most amazing food, and friendliest staff! Brunswick's finest! Love this place, it never disappoints! Definitely on top of my Melbourne list of cafés!

Favourite. This is my favourite cafe - love!
Drew
Not pretentious.. Always made to feel like a regular. The doods are cool, not pretentious wanksters, and the food is good. I enjoyed the zucchini fritters with salmon and had a cheeky beer for breakfast. Hip hop tunes and 80's cheese in the background a bonus.
In2food
Will definitely be coming back here...the food is delish and the coffee spot on. Really pleasant staff who make the experience even better - nothing is too much trouble.

This is hands down my favorite cafe in Brunswick. The staff are polite but entertaining and the food and coffee is superb. It is refreshing to be treated like a human being, instead of having to face some hipster with a bad attitude (typical of other cafés in the area). I would highly recommend going here, you won't regret it.
MelbourneMiss
Lovely. What a cute little place. I've often wondered how two cafes right next to each other can each do a booming business. I guess the answer is that they are both really good at what they do and are equally busy all of the time. I haven't checked out the neighbour yet (Ray's Cafe), but it's on the list and by all accounts it's great too.
Dood328 has a nice selection of seating and you can see a bit into the kitchen (not fully - but enough to make me very happy - nothing to hide and all that). Service is friendly and prompt!
My long black was exactly what a long black should be - full bodied and not bitter.
I ordered the corn fritters with poached eggs, bacon and onion jam. The fritters were tasty, poached eggs perfect, bacon lean and crispy but the winner was the onion jam. Wow! It had such depth of flavour and totally worked with the fritters and bacon in particular.
All of that, with enough change out of a $20 to get another coffee if you wish. What more do you want?
Highly recommended!
G
We love your all day breakfast, particularly after a very long night... Your coffee is great...
Hannah
Chilled cafe with great value. Got slightly/extremely excited about the amount of veggies these baked eggs came with – pumpkin, tomato, mushrooms, spinach, cauliflower (a very underrated vegetable), and artichokes. Nutrient heaven.
This place is pretty laid back (hence the name, spin off of ‘dude’) – you can adjust the menu, chilled vibe, brilliant music, and is not in any way shape or form pretentious.
Eggs were slightly overcooked but the ability to add some more Napoli sauce fresh from the kitchen, after my meal arrived, more than made up for this.
Staff were friendly, and the long wait between ordering and the generous portions was definitely worth it; the anticipation was reaching max.
This place does have a few steps (2 out the front, and two to get into the bathroom), so semi-wheelchair friendly, and definitely lycra friendly.
Buddha
The Dood Abides. My favourite cafe this side of the river by far.
Relaxed and friendly atmosphere is second to non in these parts and the staff that run it make you feel like your at home.

Food and coffee is amazing and depending on what you got up to the night before the menu always serves you well!!
Gusseting
Ordered veg. Breakfast pan. Uncooked clear egg white. Order sent back for cooking. Still uncooked, and dish smells off, as in old mushrooms or spinach. Kicking self for not simply walking out & going to rays next door, who know both eggs and customer service. Never again.
Izzy
Yum!. Will come here again. Great coffee!
P.S. They are open on Mondays
Kelly Brownlie
GREAT service! :) GREAT coffee :) Highly recommend. Shame they're not open Mondays.

Delicious food, with friendly and attentive staff, will defiantly be coming back!

Great breakfast.

With so much variety and fresh breakfast options, I'm not sure why this place has still such high ratings. Breakfast is very basic. Not terrible, but not good either.
Gabrielle
Waited up to 35 mins for the meal, and therefore they gave us free drinks. The chai and coffee and fresh Apple juice was great
Kopde
Good food and good service. The fritters were quite good, big breakfast was indeed very big. The huge pancake thing actually looked more impressive than its taste, although the ice cream fixed it. coffee was just ok.
HKang
Great location, great service, amazing food! What else can u expect from a cafe!?

Nice. Went to Dood328 this morning for brunch with 4 friends....

I was 10 minutes early. Service initially was great. Ordered a coffee, only problem was I had to ask twice and still no coffee 20 minutes later. Was not impressed!

Food. 4 of us ordered the baked eggs that sounded lovely. Problem was all our eggs were more like hard boiled. To add no taste. Not impressed. 2 of us didn't eat it, just ate the toast.

Coffee. Must say despite the wait was very good. Lovely and creamy and full of flavor.

Gave it a 'like' as despite the wait and food not being great, the overall service was good. The owner did note the coffee wait and did give a coffee on the house.

Would I go back? Yes as although this experience was not fantastic I know we all make mistakes and the owner was more than happy to sort things out. To add the other meals around us did look great.

After reading all the great reviews thought I'd try this place out for myself. AMAZING is an understatement. It is so rare to find friendly staff, great food and sensational coffee under one roof!! Will definitely need to make this a regular breakfast hub and try the rest of the tasty menu!
Charlize
Love it...wish it was our local. Fab place - Very friendly staff, great menu, great coffee, great relaxed chilled feel to it! Will def re-visit
Karla
Love it. This my first ever urbanspoon review, but I was motivated to sign up and post this to tell everyone how great this place is. It's become my favourite Saturday morning coffee stop - service is some of the best I have experienced, always smiling and friendly. The coffee is the best I have tasted in the area too. If you are on Victoria Street make sure you give Dood328 a go, you won't be disappointed.
East Side
Waited over 40 mins for brunch. coffees werent anything great. a bit watery. food was ok for the price. Corn fritters were a bit soggy. Hopefully it's better next time

It's cheap, really good and the staff are friendly - what more could you want? We've tried several cafes around this area but keep coming back to dood coz it's so good!
Trinda
Awesome food and fantastic choice. Waiters were funny and provided excellent service . Timing of meals was perfect. Highly Rec. 10/10

Finger licking good!. We ordered the French toast and Corn fritters with bacon and eggs. As soon as the meals were served we both decided to swap halfway thru the meal so we can have a taste of the other. Both were so delish, we cleared our plates to a point where it would pass for a fresh-out-of-the-dishwasher look! The waiter was very friendly and attentive and also overheard him serving some (obviously) regular customer and he knew what type of coffee and how he wanted it done. That's good service!
Anyhow, the ambience was good as well, we got the bucket seating near the kitchen. Great experience altogether. We would rate our experience 9/10. It was a little cold Had it been a little warmer inside we would have felt cosier and rated it a 10/10.

The bald guy is a total babe and he is always super friendly. The guy with hair makes a mean coffee and his artistic abilities are rad.
The tall brunette is smokin' and and man, can she wait a table. Tots be back soon. X

Simmo and Coffee Dood are what cafe doods should be. They remember you, remember your coffee, have a laugh and make delish food. If that's what your into (cool doods and food), stop by.

Best breakfast in melbourne by a country mile! Amazing quality food with satisfying portion sizes served by the friendliest staff. The best way to kick start your day!

Excellent food and service. We had a fantastic experience at Dood - delicious food and very friendly and fun staff. We don't usually go out for brekky as we think most cafes' breakfast menus are pretty standard/boring or overpriced. We're glad Dood changes our perception. The only difficulty I had was to decide what to have cause there were so many interesting dishes to choose from! I had Egyptian Eggs and my husband had Croque Madame. Good portion and we both enjoyed our dishes very much. The potato/pumpkin rosti in Egyptian Eggs was divine. We will definitely be back.
Christine Bruse
Love these guys!! We have breakfast there ever week or so Simon and the gang never disappoint when ever we walk in we are always greeted with a smile. I had my 40th birthday party there in October and everyone is still raving about how good it was.. Had the avocado toast today yum yum!! But best dish of all time would have to be their pancakes :) Thanks Simon for giving us a great place to enjoy!
Molly Thomson
The service was fantastic, the quality was perfect, the atmosphere was vivacious, the food was great value for money. Highly Recommended, Well done guys!

Egyptian eggs, delicious! The coffee was exceptionally good. Service was fantastic. Highly recommend for a cosy, relaxed sun breakfast.
Lucy
Great cafe though bad music. I frequent Dood a few times a week, and have done for years.
Dood is how a cafe should be, we're on first name basis, I simply appear and they know how I have my coffee, no need to order.
Food is consistently good. And service is speedy.

Though their taste of music is bad .. Simon - it's not hard, just easy listening please, especially first thing in the morning.

I just close my ears and read my paper. It's absolutely worthy anyhow.
Lulu
Great service and food. An excellent cafe. Delightful staff are happy to put up with my with my wanky coffee orders, great atmosphere, great food.
Very tasty egyptian baked eggs. Very tasty.
Happy Eater
Went there on the weekend, good location with the morning sun. Had the veggie breakie. Great presentation and food was very nice. Had a cappuccino which was excellent, friendly service.
Samantha Tham
Thumbs up :). I came here with a small group of friends for brunch. As soon as we came in we were greeted by the friendly bar guy.The comic pages on the wall was interesting and fun.

I had the Spanish baked eggs which wasn't anything special but it was yummy and the portion was satisfying. If you like Mocha , you should try theirs. I really liked it and overall, Dood328 was a great find ! Try it out :>

La Negra
Amazing!!!. Every time I come here I am never disappointing. The staff is lovely and the food is always great. I am so happy I found this little place. I love it!
Andy
Dood is probably my favourite Brunswick cafe, and there is some serious competition. The food is always good and the service is usually pretty entertaining. If in doubt, go with the Dood scramble.
Teresa Chong
Quaint cafe along Victoria street with simple decor. I ordered the Egyptian eggs which were absolutely delicious. The pumpkin potato rosti was a perfect match together with their homemade sweet chilli sauce. Strongly recommend this dish to all brunch lovers out there.
Pablo Sultan
Love it Dood!. I am glad to call this cafe my local. It covers just about everything you could ask for.
Coffee- long macs are brilliant
Service- personal and remember your coffee order, churn out coffees with no hassle in peak periods, always willing to have a chat, attentive and relaxed
Tucker - the Egyptian eggs are delicious, the pan fried brekkie dishes are absolutely spot on (and a great hangover cure) and even the stock standard bacon & eggs hit the spot
Atmosphere - relaxed, friendly,local, cool
Value - great value for your $ here. Big, tasty meals & a couple of coffees for $20
Britt
Good brunch spot. Great chai latte! Very friendly service. Some interesting menu items that are tasty though not particularly memorable.

Absolutely love it! We had our breakfast there recently. The food is cooked to perfection, even the bread is beautifully touched. Coffee is great & juice is great. Guys are very friendly & attending too.
Cafeaddiction
Friendly service at this local hang out makes this a stan out cafe. The food comes in generous servings, and the chef doesn't mind adapting his meals to our dietary requirements. Coffee is full tasting and caramelly... This is my daily hang!
Thetruth
YUM!!! Googles good food Brunswick, Dood came up with the highest positive reviews, and for a good reason, the foods really good :) will come back for sure
Jesspo
Cool Dood. A few friends told me this place was great, so headed along during the week for a late brekkie. I had the corn cakes, which were ok - but I found them quite dense. Partner had crossiants which he enjoyed. I love the comic book wall paper, the space, and the local feel. The drinks list is quite good, and the service was fantastic. I'll be back, but I'll order something else :)
Russellcru
Great funky little place in Brunswick Great coffee and food. Coffee mugs hand painted by kids gives a nice feeling. Staff are friendly and cant fault the service. Well definitely be back
TR
24.03.2016 new owners are running a great place - I loved Dood when Simon and Joe were here and I'm happy to say it's still my favourite cafe in Brunswick. The new guys have kept the good quality and value breakfasts and have added their own touch with specials and new items. Today we had the French toast with whiskey marmalade & crispy bacon and quinoa porridge with almonds, orange blossom poached pear & rhubarb. Both were delicious and the coffees were great. The sticky black rice with homemade coconut yoghurt and mango is also a favourite. Definitely worth a visit as this is one of the Brunswick gems we should support.
Deborah Pacheco
Super sized portion, value for money & tasty meals. You can share a laugh with the friendly staff. A must try in Brunswick.
Phil Kowalski
Chorizo omelet and poached eggs with avacado, feta and spinach.. The Chorizo omelet is great! Get a side order of toast and share it with a friend.
Anne
Friendly charm & style. I really love this place! Good quality food, extremely friendly service, yummy coffee, stylish decor with a humorous twist and the genuine smile of the barrista.
Try the corn cakes, the mushroom piadina, the Mediterranean eggs or one of their other tasty dishes. Just go for it!
Michelle
Great place, wonderful staff. Happy to let you sit and relax. Corn fritters are awesome. Love this place although don't frequent enough: will have to make an effort this weekend!!
Ed Cook
The best chicken pide I've ever had.
FoodingAroundMelbourne
Service with a smile. Went here this morning. Can't wait to go back. I had the Chirizo Omlete and my partner had the Baked eggs, both were amazing. Big serves. Often even when you ask for a hot coffee it comes lukewarm, at Dood328 it was HOT, just the way it was asked for. Chef has a list of delicious sounding dishes, all of which I can't wait to try.

The other thing about this place is the great decor. MARVEL comics line the walls and I have never sat in a more comfortable chair.

TWO THUMBS UP!!
Dotfox
For a place with such a bad name, this cafe can serve good coffee and food. Atmosphere is pretty bad but the owners make up for it with friendliness.
Jes LittleCoy
Compliments to the chef. Sitting in a booth with it's walls covered in old Marvel comics brought back childhood memories. Ordered Corn Cakes and a Big Breakfast and they were literally big. The big breakfast had baked eggs, huge mushrooms and bacon that came out served in a pan, absolutely delicious! And the Corn cakes are corn pancakes topped with relish and other sauces, yum yum! Some of the food on the menu are Turkish inspired. The plates were wiped clean and a tip offered for the great food and friendly staff. In my opinion I believe their food is far better tasting and with a greater variety than their much hyped about neighbor. I haven't tried Dood328's coffee as yet but will definitely try it next time I come back.
