Excellent choices of sweets. Got a honey ball as a taster for free which was divine, and the rest of the sweets I bought was just as great. The guy who served us was so friendly and great customer service! Love it so much!

After walking in the chilly cold darkness of Sydney Rd last night to hand in security footage of low-lifes who robbed mine and my neighbours apartment bulding into the Police, my partner and I stumbled across this glowing warm lebanese pastry shop.
Coming in off the cold, dark and wet street around 8pm, this place looked like a candy coloured Mecca and smelt like honey soaked everything. We got the most delicious Awwama Honey Balls and Rose water spiked Knafeh, the man even gave us two extra Awwama for free to try!
This little discovery brought sunshine into our grim little evening. I cant wait to return to buy a whole plate of goodies to share with family and friends. Pure sunshine!

Wonderful brown butter taste. Zaytoune has replaced a couple other Middle Eastern sweet shops that have occupied this storefront in the past year. I reckon it's better than the others must have been. Zaytoune is bright inside, has a decent assortment of baklava-type creations and a smattering of other Lebanese pastries. They also do cakes and fancier things. I picked up a small box of stuff to have with my AM coffees at home over the coming week.
The thing I noticed about Zaytoune's sweets that's different -- and wonderful! -- is that the filo dough tastes like it was brushed with browned butter. That's a French-ish cooking technique where butter is brought to just shy of the burning point, which gives it a deeper, nuttier flavour. It gives Zaytoune's pastries an edge over other Middle Eastern sweet shops.
For Arab pastry places on Sydney Road, my heart goes to Al Nada because it's tasty AND vegan, so you know they're running a pure shop, and my lust goes to Balha, because their selection is HUUUUUGE. But I could see coming back to Zeytoune for another baklava fix. Is Sydney Road the greatest Mediterranean pastry place in the Southern Hemisphere or what?
