Review Union St Brewers - Brunswick

CO
Rude, the chef was nice and clearly annoyed at the barista's attitude. Bagels were good. However, there was little knowledge about them (all are apparently "white" despite there being multiple types)

A perfect cafe @unionstbrewers just a few minutes walking distance from Barkly Square, where you can catch up with friends to grab quality coffee, delicious bagels, both sweet and savoury, healthy smoothies, or even for a brunch. They have a new menu where you can find a wide range of options for both breakfast and lunch. Although their bagels are the star of their cafe, besides amazing coffee and such a cozy ambiance. What we had: Sun-kissed smoothie, that's so yum and has all the goodness of strawberries, dragon fruit, mango, peach, pineapple, coconut water and coconut milk. Chicken Mixed Bagel, a perfect breakfast bagel that has a bit of everything in it, from chicken to avocados to tomatoes to cheese. An irresistible bagel filling that makes it a wholesome yet a healthy treat. Mushroom Man, is perfect for all those who are a huge fan of stir fried, soft, mushy mushrooms. This dish is made with perfection and served with so many fantastic ingredients, like stir fried mushrooms in a black bean sauce, honey, chilli sauce, sherry, sourdough, poached eggs and Avocados. Would highly recommend it. Besides the good food, the service by the wonderful staff is quick and has ample of clean and hygienic seating areas. Also it's a dog friendly cafe. So why not grab a coffee or a brunch here @unionstbrewers trust me, you'd wanna visit again and again

A wonderful cafe to visit with staff with a exceptionally friendly and have a great attention to detail. I enjoyed having my order promptly taken and being remembered after visiting several times plus it’s a delight to have your water refilled without even asking for it! We ate the avo smash and bagel which is so tasty and incredibly affordable. The coconut pancakes are my favourite, they really need to be tried! I love coming here for a coffee or a bigger bite.

Under new management, possibly due to COVID and unfortunately the quality has seriously gone down hill. While the coffee is still good, the bagels have shrunk to the smallest bagels I’ve ever seen. It wouldn’t be too upsetting if the price hadn’t stayed north of $10. $11 also for a watery smoothie. Significantly underwhelming. Especially considering how good this place was before. I’d highly recommend walking over the railway track and heading to Acustico next door. We won’t be popping in again anytime soon.

Absolutely love the decor! So minimal and so modern with greenery in the corners. Staff were super chill and friendly. When I asked for vegan cheese (purely because of my dairy intolerance) they had come back ensuring I knew that the rest of the meal had meat in it. Very professional and considerate of them. Food - OMG! the red hot bagel (has eggs, cheese and bacon for the veg/vegan foodies) was absolutely delicious! It got a bit messy was but was good I didn't care. The only thing missing is the chilli they claim it has. Definitely would add some more chilli into it. But still amazing! The herb mayo in the bagel was made to perfection and really added the zest to meal. The soy hot chocolate tasted like melted Cadbury. So rich and beautiful! The bashed avo was great! Extremely filling and the flavours blended well. Egg was poached to perfection. Would definitely recommend this place! And would definitely come back!

These guys are currently #10 in Melbourne on their way to #1. I had the baked eggs with lamb hash and it was absolutely delightful. Every mouthful was a pleasurable explosion of flavor and goodness. The stag are exceptionally friendly and service is first class. They are very accommodating to special requests and are all obviously passionate about delivering a great consumer experience. Don't miss this place in your travels.

Affogato Addiction
Nice bagels, with great filling options.

Veggie bagel, $11, had a lot of good tasty layers, but then hard to eat without making a mess.

Affogato, $5, was good.

Good seating outdoors & in, and friendly staff.
Georgia

Our favourite spot to eat in Brunswick! The vegan gyros is so delicious, along with the bagels too. Coffee is great, service is always top, it's our everyday cafe.

Lovely little cafe with friendly staff. The dishes are very good value, they have bagels for around $5. I had smashed avo for $15, with two poached eggs on top. It was lovely!

Great cafe with excellent service. The food is tasty, really well presented and most of the dishes have a culinary twist. And it's lovely to be able to sit outdoors on a warm day and watch the passing parade

Probably one of the best cafes in Melbourne. The food and the environment is just great. The staff are also very cool. I had an Acai that was to die for. Check it out. :)

Dropped in for a quick mid-afternoon snack and was pleasantly suprised by the customer service.Bagels could be more palatable and coffee more inspired. The relaxed manner of the staff definitely gurantees a return visit.

All the best!

Putting our grip to a different use down at @unionstbrewers with their Ruben. Off the main strip of Sydney road in Brunswick, this cafe is fresh - just like their products.

.

The Ruben was very tasty, they make the meats and bread in house. The sourdough 😍👌 Wish there was more pickles!! The coffee is good and staff 👍
Anna
Lovely local - great food which tastes and looks good. I don't drink coffee but their chai is excellent and the staff make a real effort to remember who you are and what you like from visit to visit. Always spotless, nice minimalist decor, open and airy.
Good Food Good Mood
I'm giving an extra points for the $4.5 pressed juice. I didn't know you could get juice that cheap this side of 1980. It's pretty disturbing that $8+ juice is actually the norm to me but let's park that for a moment. Anyway the prices were blowing my mind so I got eggs on toast with three sides (total of $19 SAY WHAT) pulled lamb, smoked salmon and avocado. Yes I have a healthy appetite. Make sure you bring a jacket as it was fairly cold inside and when I asked the waiter if we could close the windows he told me no they get stuck. Weird response but no matter. I just ordered another juice

Union Street Brewers is a fashionable modern cafe situated just before the train station on Union Street Brunswick. The open vicinity is small inside with only a few seats and bar tools near the coffee counter but the cafe embraces the trendy Brunswick lifestyle of having ample seating out the front to enjoy the sun and passers by.

I popped into Union Street Brewers on a sunny late Thursday afternoon for a bite to eat with a friend and upon arrival the place was looking rather empty with only one couple sitting by the window enjoy the great looking food. We where greeted by a super friendly waiter who supplied us with menus and we took a seat at the high wooden table in the centre of the cafe sitting on long bar stools facing the road. The cafe has a very open space that delivers exceptional natural lighting radiating off the wooden panels creating a truely relaxing enjoyable environment. After analysing the tasteful cheap menu the waiter took our orders firstly being a long black and cold drip along with the granola and toasted veggie sandwich.

Our meals arrived looking exactly as they sounded on the menu. Simplistic, yet divine displaying the fresh produce with respect and not disguising it as something to be more classier and overpriced that its own uniqueness as a lot of overpriced cafes do these days.

Once we tucked into our meals I noted that our drinks had not arrived and when I questioned there appearance the waiter was more than apologetic and delivered them immediately. This was of course no fuss as I personally didn’t mind as I too work as a waitress and everyone forgets orders it was really no biggie.
The long black was nice and hot brewed well yet was slightly weak and sour not portraying acidic smooth textures I prefer in my coffee. The cold drip was much better but did lack that light fruity palatable taste.

The toasted sandwich with roasted mushroom, zucchini, dill and cheddar was perfect for a light lunch. The lightly charred sourdough that was generously packed with gooey cheese ensured every bite was delicious. The addition of the dill married the mushroom and zucchini perfectly creating a well balanced meal. The house made granola with vanilla bean natural yoghurt and seasonal fruit and soy milk was plated gorgeously and tasted even better. The freshly cut, banana, strawberry and apple added a great crisp texture to the bed of crunchy granola. The presence of chewy cranberries, roasted coconut, and clusters of sticky maple oats and other goodies kept the taste buds alive. The creamy yoghurt was the perfect addition ensuring the dish was not to sweet.

After enjoying the tremendous atmosphere of Union Street Brewers we thought it was time to pay and when we stubbled over to the counter the amazing waiter didn’t even charge for the coffees as he was so apologetic about them. What a complete an utter legend.

Union Street Brewers is a great little spot for a clam, cool catch up with friends or for a hefty study session in a relaxing inviting environment. The food is simple but good and at such an amazing price. Overall they could lift there coffee game but with staff that are overly generous one can not complain.

Good coffee, watery bad poached eggs, no bacon on the menu, although you can get lamb...very odd. Like I said it's worthwhile stopping by for a coffee, just steer clear of the poached eggs.

Its very near from my school and visit here for short break, food and coffee was good good place have a short break on your busy day. Bright interior and friendly staff!
Val
Friendly and nice staff, the food was alright, the place is quiet and nice to hang out. Overall it's an OK value for money given that the food doesnt taste 'amazing'
Belinda
This is a cute little cafe with friendly staff but I didn't think much of anything else here. The coffee was ok and the breakfast was quite boring. We both had the grilled halloumi, which is just 2 slabs of halloumi which have been cut so thick it doesn't cook nicely and is like a rubber brick, with raw cherry tomatoes, cucumber and red onion scattered over toast with a fried egg. The best part was the chermoula and there was barely even a teaspoon of it on the plate. Hopefully other menu items have a bit more thought and creativity put into them, but I don't think I will be back to find out.
Ginelle
I just stopped here for a quick coffee run before catching the train! Also had one of the best cream cheese bagels! Friendly staff and quick service!

The setup and location is Devine
Coffee is good I wouldn't say amazing as there is room for improvement
Food was good
We enjoy catching up with friends at Union

Dined at this place on Anzac Day 2016. Afterwards I'm not sure why you would pick it above all of Brunswick's other options, although the space on a sunny day is nice. The menu sounds impressive but the two meals we had, the Brewers Breakfast and the Avocado dish were both lacklustre. The toast wasn't cooked, let's call it bread. And all the elements seemed like something you would rustle up at home, not pay someone else to cook for you. The real kicker was my partner added a side of Haloumi to the Avocado dish, and it was literally a 5cmx5cm slab of raw Haloumi, like it had just been slid out of the packet. When paying, we brought this to the attention of the waitress, who said she would tell the chef, but didn't offer any apology or discount. Wouldn't go back when there's so many reliable other options nearby. Coffee was fine.

My family and I came here to celebrate mother's day. These guys were so amazing accommodating us, they allowed me to book for 18 people, without a set menu and gave us our own little section. But these were minimal details, the staff were kind, efficient, personal and a delight to deal with. The food was delicious, not very big servings but the taste outweighed that, and the coffee was incredible!
We will DEFINITELY be back!
Thank you Union Street Brewers for a wonderful experience!

Was charged $7 for 3 espresso shots. I can't figure out how they calculated that cost? The coffee is too expensive so unfortunately I won't be back.

This cafe has been around for about a year, and its located under my building. I visited when they opened and found the menu odd and the coffee bitter. As I drive in and out in the mornings after working out, I have seen the rotation of the chefs, floor staff and barista. Over the past few months, the team has been stable, and the joint is full on the weekends. Working from home, desperate for coffee and a muffin, I decide to give it another chance. So glad I did! The coffee (don't laugh at my order) was a perfect hot, large, weak soy latte. Just as good as Wide Open Road (my regular). But the standout was the fresh apple crumble muffin. Muffins are tricky - they are so often tough and artificial tasting. This one was Super yum. Tender crumb, no chemical-lly after taste, lovely apple-ness and just the right amount of crumble on top. I'm definitely going back to explore more of the menu. Plus the fitout is sweetly minimalist and the team were welcoming.

This place rocks! Best chicken sandwich in town and the French toast is delish. Coffee is great and service is super friendly. I found them by accident and will be back on purpose for more!

Cute little cafe where you can sit inside or out. I originally came across this place as it was a part of a list of melbourne's best coffee. I wouldn't say it was the best but it was pretty good. Menu has some good variety. I tried their homemade bagels with cured and baked salmon accompanied by cream cheese and I really enjoyed it. The bagel was super tasty and fresh. Look forward to going back and trying some more items.

Union St Brewers is a relaxed cafe filled with elements of wood and nature, with staff who emit a pleasantly distant, spaced out vibe as is customary with most Brunswick cafes.

Once seated at the table, my keys slip from the table to the floor. As I bend to pick them up, my fingers become smeared with a mixture of butter and salt, which suffered the same fate goodness knows how long ago and is now proud to call the linoleum home.
The Critic's Critic
When the majority of your reviewers have only reviewed once and they're posting a rating 5, you know it's the owner's crew prepping up the place. Coffee is average, food service is slow and food is just ok. It's ok, not great despite what the owners mates tell you.
Hannah Kanjou
Excellent food and service! I am very fussy with my coffee and this place made me the best coffee served as I wanted. Didn't want breakfast but after seeing my mum and sisters plate I couldn't help myself. I ended up ordering the grilled haloumi and it was perfection. Have already planned my next visit.

We called into this place a couple of weeks ago and after waiting an hour for our food to arrive we had to leave without eating. they were quite apologetic and provided coffee on the house which was a plus on the customer service side.

We went there again today and had a completely different experience. The place was empty so we were served straight away with coffee however trying to get anything else was a challenge.

When we finally attracted someone's attention we asked for some toast with jam... And it was as if we were asking for the most unheard of item. What arrived was 1 small slice a bread on a tiny plate with the tiniest of scraping of butter in the middle and a tiny pot of jam which we were both meant to share. When we asked for extra butter this was again treated as if it was a strange request.

That said.. At least the bread actually had some colour to it.

The service was so different it feels as if it has new owners who are more interested with rearranging the cusions than serving the customers. A very strange experience. Again, with so much choice in the area.. They need to do much better.. Particularly with the basics.

having discovered it’s a rather quick train ride from home for me, i’ve really been enjoying exploring the café scene in brunswick of late… there’s nothing quite like immersing yourself in the vibe and character of melbourne’s suburbs, and sydney road has to be one of the most iconic.

Great little café. Really enjoyed the lamb burger; very tender meat. Also had lovely presentation. The coffee was good, with a few different single origins available, however I stuck with the house blend and it was decent. Very well priced, great value.

I drink coffee here most days. It is always great quality and the food is really good. Takeaways are always really quick. It's a bit windy outside but cosy inside.
HungryRat
The staff are always really friendly and they make great coffees. The baked treats are delicious too. I also love the minimalist decor and the big windows to let the natural light in.
Hello. Imnikki
For a cafe to survive in such a cutthroat industry, two things matter - quality of the food and customer service. Suffice to say, Union St Brewers possessed both these qualities. The servers were welcoming and friendly and seemed to genuinely enjoyed doing their job. After being greeted warmly, the servers continued in engaging in the right amount of conversation to make you feel taken care of and that your patronage is valued. Food-wise, the breakky burger was one of the best I had. The chipotle mayo and spicy chermoula complements the salty and smoky flavour of the pastrami perfectly (an appreciated change from the more commonly used bacon). The pastrami was also the star the reuben; delicious and flavourful to the last bite.

The only slight letdown was the smoothie. Would enjoyed it more if the ratio of avocado and banana was tweaked (more avocado, less banana) in the L.A. Morning for a more balanced flavour. No complains with the coffee though.

Awesome food and service. This place definitely warrants another visit.

Great coffee and customer service!

Staff are always happy to great you and they have the best a cutest cream cheese bagels!

My partner lives across the road so we have built a good re pore with this cafe.

mwa

Union St Brewers is a place just outside RMIT University in Brunswick. They had just opened in November last year and I had decided to check them out. They are a rather cozy open air cafe in which students can do some study in or hold group meetings in. There weren't many people in there after 11am which was good. I was able to ask questions and watch them cook my food and do my coffee.

West of the upfield train line you won't find too many Cafes pumping out quality food and coffee like Union St Brewers. Well located off of the frantic Sydney Rd traffic, this cafe has prime real estate for commuter traffic and a local for families on the weekends.

Food ordered:
Fresh squeezed juices, fresh and delicious. An espresso, I had low expectations (sorry) but they were blown away by this creamy, juicy and flavourful coffee. Great job mr. barista, 1st time tasting Rosso Coffee and I'm impressed. Baked eggs, honestly the chilli beans were very good, I grew up eating chilli and I really enjoyed them. Also the poached eggs added on top instead of baked into the beans is a great choice. The cured & smoked salmon, really fresh flavours throughout this dish which is always a must when it comes to fish, but I ask 2 things: add a big juicy lemon wedge please & pull back on the salt a bit. Otherwise delicious.

Ambience:
The waiters here are very friendly, helpful and love to have a fun chat to get things going. Even from the first time dining here I was pleasantly surprised by the happy demeanour of our server. Its too often that you sit down for a meal only to be met with disinterest and a touch of rude. Fortunately here this is not the case and everyone is very happy to engage in conversation. The cafe itself has a neighbourhood feel, locals seem to stroll in and out and the regulars are greeted by name. The fit out is nice, but not extravagant or super notable, and makes for a relaxed atmosphere to get some work done or have an enjoyable meal with friends.

Obviously I enjoyed it. I will be back for more and take advantage of the wifi (hard to find In Brunswick cafes)!
Em Belden
Clean crisp and organic design leading for a pleasant experience.
Coffee is consistent and the perfect location for commuters in the area being next to the station.
Meals are delicious, their really is nothing more to be said. Delicious sums it up.
Well presented and using fresh ingredients (including from their own vege patch out the front) shows commitment and inspiration to make diners happy.

As I bend to pick them up, my fingers become smeared with a mixture of butter and salt, which suffered the same fate goodness knows how long ago and is now proud to call the linoleum home.

I glance around to see the same story under every other table - this place really needs a good mop.

Feeling slightly icky, I get on to ordering.

EGGS ON TOAST + FETTA
My Occasional Vegetarian, But Easily Pressured Into Eating Meat friend orders the scrambled eggs on toast with fetta.

Slightly gluggy, the eggs do the job on their own but really come out of their shell when combined with the fetta, which holds the creamy saltiness characteristic of high quality produce and becomes the glue which adheres all the flavours together.

The toast is warm, crusty and authentically sourdough - I wonder if it is baked on premises. A smattering of potatoes ups the carb quotient to 'Alarming' for this dish - not one I’d be caught dead eating, but luckily most boys I know don’t care about that sort of thing.

BREWERS BREAKFAST
Always one to go for big breakfasts, I gamely order the Brewers Breakfast with poached eggs, baked field mushrooms, kale, lamb merguez sausage, avocado and sourdough.

I have low expectations after the whole floor incident, and when the dish is placed in front of me, I am slightly mollified.

It is when I bite into the sausage however that the sun beams on my tastebuds; pummelled with garlic and a hint of spice, this sausage is the kind of nirvana one experiences at 4am Drunk Souvlaki time; a sacred space which I never thought I’d experience sober at 11am.

I force my Occasional Vegetarian, But Easily Pressured Into Eating Meat friend into taking a bite. He agrees - this bish is on point. (Blame Instagram for that last sentence).

Funnily enough however, after you reach halfway and the dish cools, the meat almost becomes oppressive - the garlic is all of a sudden unctuously overbearing, leaving the palate desperately searching for some form of relief which surfaces as a messiah in the kale, cutting the greasiness.

Having said that, it still gets points for charming the pants off my tastebuds on first bite.

The mushrooms do little to rouse the palate however the eggs are poached perfectly and form a satisfyingly gooey paste when mixed with the avocado.

CONCLUSION
Light green splashes mixed with light wood and occasional hanging plants, a feature Bonsai plant and fresh herbs on display give Union St Brewers an environmentally conscious, if not slightly mountainous vibe.

The music is loud, overwhelmingly so, that I have to strain to hear my brunch buddy (and it’s not like I’m one of those terribly unhip fuddy-duddies who dislikes boom boxes).

The staff are a little confused at times, not sure of who has ordered what and leaving our juice sitting sadly by itself in a corner for 10 minutes before noticing it hasn’t been served yet.

As a cafe, the fare at Union St Brewers is good enough; as a hangout joint, the chilled-out atmosphere game is strong (OK, deleting my IG account NOW).

Service: 6, Food: 7

Union St Brewers is located at 34 Union St, Brunswick.

CONNECT WITH ME!
Instagram: @thismodeleatsalot
Facebook: /thismodeleatsalot
Twitter: @modeleatsalot

Had breakfast with the gals here and it was fabulous! The others all went for variations on poached eggs with avocado, which looked incredible. I had the custard French toast and it was TO DIE FOR. Definitely recommend. Very laidback atmosphere and friendly vibes.
Frenchtoastandindiepop
We found their brew to be creamy, bringing out a filter-like flavour at a perfect temperature. This made is very happy customers! Our savoury dish was a baked eggs which we added lamb hash to, and was served with bread. The bread was deliciously fresh and perfect for dipping in the spicy bean mix, a great kick to start your morning. The lamb hash was a good addition, tender meat that melted in your mouth. We are big fans of feta and enjoyed the creamy, slightly salty flavour it added to our eggs. All in all, a very satisfying dish! Next up was their custard french toast with a praline crumb and poached plum. The photo really doesn’t do this dish justice, it was beautifully plated and had a wonderfully warm aroma. The french toast had a lovely cake-like flavour, with a crack creme brulee top, enhancing its custard and vanilla bean accents. They promised us custard french toast and they certainly delivered!
Astrid Koutoulas
To die for!. Amazing!! Best coffee and best food! I strongly recommend the baked eggs (the breadcrumbs on the top are amazing!!) and the house made bread on the side is brilliant! Staff are awesome and friendly and the cafe itself is super cute!

This is my absolute favourite!

Lovely. What a cool place, I had the zucchini fritters with poached eggs today and must say that it was to die for. Definitely a must try.
My long black was packed full of flavour. If I'm correct it was a single origin from Guatemala.
Forgot to mention the great friendly service.
B back for sure

The best french toast I have ever had!!! After hearing all these great reviews, I had to check it out. My husband & I had the french toast & our girls had some crepes & they loved them. Cant wait to go back & try other items on the menu. Fantastic coffee's, friendly & attentive service & the food is amazzzing!!!

I went for a coffee and a bite to eat, and stumbled upon the most heavenly version of the briosch French toast. Great atmosphere and some of the best coffe I've had in a long time. Definitely worth checking out

Definitely worth the trip.. I’m not a local to Brunswick but a friend had recommended Union St Brewers for breakfast and it was definitely worth the trip.

Was so great not to see the same same breakfast menu. We ordered the Lamb Hash, which was a highlight, with perfect poached eggs and the Reuben sandwich that was served in ‘on-site’ made moreish bread. Coffee was also top-notch and the service friendly.
Pinot Grigio
A+ 10/10. I can't really fault this place. The food is always outstanding whether it be take away bagels, pastries from the cabinet or ordering from the menu. The coffee is always on point. The staff are not only incredibly attentative and friendly but also very nice to look at.
I came here in the first couple of weeks of it opening and have kept coming back. I feel like its only getting better.

Great start to the day. Great way to start your day friendly faces , good service and great coffee . Been here 3 times over the last 2 weeks as its my local and i have never left disappointed. Delicious. Came here for breakfast. Excellent coffee. Love the colored China. Amazing modern comfortable fitout. We had crushed avo on house made bread and corn crepes. Absolutely delicious. Wait staff are cool and extremely accommodating. Will definitely be back.

Great coffee, but.... I really want to love this cafe, but it's so vegan unfriendly that I've not been able to try anything on the menu :(

THESE GUYS!. Been to this place a few times now, all different meals ordered and all were as original and tastey as the next.
Not so pricey & quality customer service!
:-)

Really nice food & coffee in the heart of Brunswick. A must for locals & worth seeking out on a lazy Sunday morning for the rest of us.

What a Great Find!. The path less traveled

Sometimes its when you take a different turn to your daily routine you may stumble across something that makes you thank you made that decision. I was trying to avoid the heavy traffic of Sydney Rd when I turned on to Union St Brunswick and noticed Union St Brewers. Bright, clean and inviting I decided to drop in and investigate.

The staff were welcoming and was attended to rather quickly and ordered a latte. The coffee was delicious and couldn't wait for the Reuben sandwich after hearing that the chef was the
former head chef of Auction rooms (one of my favourites). Boy it was outstanding! It was full of house cured pastrami and tasted like no sandwich I have had before.

The cafe is only two weeks young and the professionalism of the team & quality of the product makes it seem like they have been here for longer.

I'm looking forward to the weekend to try the beef cheek tacos, Im sure the wife will order the grilled octopus salad!

What a gem!. What an absolute gem of a place! Tried it for the first time today and I was impressed! Coffee was spot on, I was duly impressed with the avo smash, and the freshly baked bagels were too good! Service was great too, overall the place had a fresh and modern feel.. Just what's needed in Brunswick! Will be back...
