Review Bilal Restaurant - Brunswick

Samir Idris
Hello, I went there on the 14th of February for lunch. Ordered: - Dosa - Biryani - Samosa - Samosa Chaat Following is what I found wrong with the restaurant: - Unclean cutlery: I got it changed - Samosa chaat was served in a greasy plate. I asked the waitress to change it, she went back and moved the samosa chaat in another plate and said last plate was greasy cause it was made in the kitchen or something along those lines and kept arguing too. I paid for it but left as it as can be seen in the pictures i.e. paid for nothing - Dosa was not up to the mark - Rude Staff: On showing how bad things were and that this is not how things must be, waitress said, "we serve people every day and know how it should be". A fantastic response :) I can live with sub-par food taste and even unclean cutlery as I know it can be a very difficult business to run BUT staff being rude specially when you are the one that is paying? Thats a big no no. I would not go back to this place even if it was the last restaurant standing in Melbourne. Advice to the owner: Please train your staff. Regards, Samir Idris

One of the best restaurants in Coburg to offer authentic Indian , Malaysian cuisine .. One can experience the flavours of South Asia in this restaurant..

Flavoursome and authentic. We will definitely be back. Eggplant curry is excellent!

The only Indian/Malaysian restaurant worth the time! We are always satisfied with the meals, never left hungry. When we order medium spice it is actually spicey! Our usual order is the Chicken Kondattam, Tikka Masala, plain rice and a plain roti. The chicken is very good quality. It is always juicy and they never use those small, dry chunks of chicken breast like other restaurants do. 10/10

Went this place a lot of times between 2017 -2018.. definitely loved the briyani and roti and curries.. my friend recommended me this one no wonder i also loved it. Product portion was huge tooo. Only thing I want to see is bit of cleanliness in the restaurant… definitely would go back here If i every go to Melbourne again…

Worst food ever. Menu says dry item but ended up with sauce. Its just frozen prawns n fish..simmered in gravy. Not even cooked properly. Avoid this place guys

I give BIlal restaurant AAA+ the front service is exellent and food tastes like as if someone has put so much love into it it feels like comforting home cooking. I hope this bussiness flourishes so much that they cant cope with demands :-) in sha Allah it becomes very successful.

Super tasty! Try the goat masala and butter chicken... Awesome naan bread, super we'll priced and very lovely service. Only bad thing is the TV on...But who cares when the food is so damn good. Oh the mango lassi is extremely tasty.

Excellent Dosa and idly! The best southern style Indian food I've had in Brunswick.
Missy H Maria
Had dinner there. Love the lamb tikka masala, full of flavour! Goes well with the egg roti. Goat biryani n tandoori chicken was yumm!! Will come back for sure!

Ripper local outfit doing great work. 10 outta 10 will eat again.

The masala dosa is excellent. So is the plain roti parotta. We also had the coconut rice which really didn’t taste like coconut, the nasi lemak which was basically spicy and tasteless, simultaneously, and the lamb biryani, which had very dry lamb and was far too spicy. We will definitely be back for the dosa and roti but very reluctant to try anything else.

Great little place for authentic Indian food. Butter chicken and tikka masala is a must for me. Along with their garlic roti and nasi goreng rice! Always a great feed!
Asim Reyazuddin
Ordered the butter chicken and beef biryani. Their butter chicken wasn’t butter chicken, it was something that tasted like coconut spicy chicken curry. I’ve never heard of butter chicken cooked in coconut oil.
As for the biryani, the beef pieces were sort of stale and so hard my teeth hurt chewing them.
YesNoMelbourne
My favourite place for Indian food
Their chicken or fish tikka masala is my favourite and their cheese or garlic naans are the best I've tried in Melbourne
Doesn't look very modern and it usually empty but that doesn't stop me from coming here

I order Biryani but it was horrible it was INSULT to the name of "Biryani" it was full of Ginger and Garlic taste and kind of creamy and Meat was not fresh smells like "STALE MEAT" after eating my stomach was not feeling good with horrible foul burbs.

Chilli Chicken recipe was not that great if the chef googled some good Indian chilli recipes and they have got some better ones.

Beware of STEEL SCRUBBER WIRES in the rice, it might be accidental... but if you have swallowed it, you will be having tough time.

Never ever go after this incident

. Quick service (takeaway, and very early in the evening so restaurant was quiet) but food was not great- the dosa was disappointing- very soggy and oily -the roti was similar, and the eggplant curry was a little bland. Maybe i ordered badly, or maybe it would have been better to eat in.

Having read mixed reviews we decided to order takeaway from Bilal. We are great fans of Singhs in Nicholson Street and felt quite adventurous trying an alternative. It was very easy to order online, and to pay with paypal - with free delivery over $25 we opted for this. We got an SMS with the delivery time (nearly an hour) and it arrived right on time. The menu is large and has some different items to your standard indian restaurant. We had Samosas which had lovely pastry and were very tasty. We followed this with a vindaloo and Tika masala, supported by a potato stuffed roti. All were delicious. The sauces were much lighter than Singhs, but felt like they were freshly made with fresh ground up spices. Having eaten our fill there was enough left for a light lunch the next day. All in all a lovely meal and we will explore more items on the menu.

Disgraceful. Upon arriving, we waited nearly 10 minutes for a menu and another 10 to order. The service was virtually non-existent. Lamb Korma was bland and mealy and the Kadai Chicken was gristly with an unpleasant, grainy texture. We tried to order some additional rotis, only to find out that "there is no more".

While we were seated, we witnessed other diners lose their patience and leave - I can't blame them. The service is neglectful and apathetic, the decor feels like it's been inspired by a circus, it has the ambience of a public toilet and the food is lifeless and boring.

I really wish I could find something positive to say, but this really was a miserable experience and I couldn't recommend this place to anybody.

Despite the fact that this place looks like the decor hasn't been updated in 30 years, it's pretty good. I guess it adds to the authenticity of it all, because half of the joints I went to in India looked exactly the same.

The first thing I noticed was how cheap the food is. Second thing, the menu looks even older than the decor. Your standard Indian favourites are all here and nothing is over $13. The vegetarian options are all sub $10. We had the Chicken Rendang and the Lamb Korma, which were both pretty good. The food is unpretentious and probably won't knock your socks off, but for under $13 a dish, it's great quality and excellent value. I would describe it as authentically ordinary Indian.

The staff were really friendly and made sure we were looked after.

If you're after good quality Indian that's dirt cheap, you can't really go past this place.

Recommend

I am very happy to have stumbled Bilal! For a Wednesday night, it was just the basic and non-frills meal I was looking for. Good and tasty, the staff very friendly and the decor cosy.

Chicken randang was colourful and hearty, the lamb korma was my favourite despite it initially looking bit funky. Roti was so so delicious, overall it it hit the spot. Including a rice for 2, 2x cokes and 2x vegatable samosas the total was a measly $42. For the price, it was amazing value. i will be be back.

Best find ever! Between four people, we ordered:

- eggplant curry
- butter chicken
- beef briyani
- some fish dish (it was deep fried fish tossed in a slightly spicy sauce)
- roti garlic x2
- roti bom x2

The total bill came to under $57!

Of note, the roti bom isn't what you would expect. The condensed milk was basically poured over the roti, but it was still tasty.

Also, I'm Malaysian and I can assure you our meal was very delicious.

Got takeaway from these guys, also experienced the very stingy portions, containers were half full, and they are the small containers. Food wasn't bad but would need to order 2 main dishes per person to get a proper meal.

We got take-away from here for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I got a chickpea curry, which was SOOO yummy!! apparently the other curries weren't bad either. We came back not long after and ordered a couple of curries and where very disappointed, they where lacking in flavour, my vegetable curry tasted very bland and the vegetables had that frozen vegetables taste and the containers where only half full, seriously stingy. On a positive note, their prices are very reasonable, staff seem friendly and I would highly recommend the chickpea curry. I don't think we will come back here though..

Bilal is Authentic & Tasty!. Such a nice restaurant on Sydney Rd, you wont regret coming down to Bilals. I just loved the variety of the menu which includes nearly everything you'd want from noodles, rice and curries. Bilal even has Dosa! not a lot of places serve so this is a great addition.

I tried the Beef Tikka Masala which was really nice, i usually love hot spicy food but this dish the hotness hit me like wow. Very nice and tasty it may look small but trust me its so filling. Ive tried the Plain Dosa & the Ghee Dosa both tasted like real authentic Dosas and the Ghee Dosa was really nice. The chutney & sambar were a nice side which you can dip the Dosa in.

Service was definitely really fantastic as there were big family groups in the restaurant but the food actually came in early to my surprise which was a huge plus as i was hungry.

Thanks Guys!

I just got takeaway eggplant curry and lamb pilaf. Both dishes tasted very fresh and full of flavour. There were lovely big tender chunks of lamb in the pilaf, just as I had hoped. Service was friendly. Looking forward to coming back one day to try their other dishes, especially the various types of roti, even though I don't live around this area.

Surprisingly perfect. Surprisingly because it looks simple from outside but the food was amazing. We had the paneer curry and 2 rotis. The rotis are perfect and the curry was full of flavour.
Utterly satisfied.
Oh and we walked in at 11 when they close and they served us very happily.
Waitor was very sweet and attentive

I came here for the Chicken Biriyani and was not disappointed - for $9 you really can't go wrong. Staff were very friendly too. Only criticism would have to be that the Gulab Jamun was a bit dry. Overall pretty happy with the place.

The real deal. Beautifully prepared authentic south Indian food, delicious doses, fiery fish curries etc. And the staff are lovely.

Staff was friendly and roti was good but Butter paneer masala was terrible, it is my favourite dish. Could not fill my stomach as dishes of very reasonable taste.

The real deal. There are a few places that you can get real southern Indian parathas in this part of Melbourne now, but this place has the best I've found by a long margin. Light and crispy, they come apart easily, just as they should. I usually have the sambar which is quite good. Last time I had the chili chicken which was rich and tasty, though it could have been a little spicier.

It's not a place you go to for the decor, but at these prices you shouldn't expect too much. At least it's not a white-neon lit cave, which many restaurants at this price point are.

The staff are very friendly and accommodating. This is rapidly becoming a regular for me, despite being a little out of the way.

Malaysian dishes were OK, but the Indian dishes were really delicious. Fish tikka masala and mutton haleem both excellent. Very friendly service. Recommended!

Great restaurant. My husband, daughter and I have eaten here several times and have never been disappointed. We always try a different dish. Value for money is excellent and the staff are very friendly.

Excellent!. I come to this restaurant with my family quite regularly and we are always very impressed by the food and service. The fish curry is amazing and if your looking for dosa, this is the place to go. The young waiter is always very attentive and polite. The prices are such good value if you ask me they could charge a lot more considering the quality of dishes.

Best place for Dosa. I ususally order from here when i crave a good dosa from eat now.
Although they take forever to deliver the dosa (and mostly south indian food) is really good.
i have tried their butter chicken and chicken manchurian, and to be honest i am not a fan of any of their other types of cuisine.
their chicken (meat) samosas are yum! and ill always be a regular here for their cheese dosas,
Sjmclean
Awful service. Never got to try the food. Went in and were given water and menus, decided what we wanted and waited and waited and waited. The waiter(?) never approached us to take our order just waited at the counter. There was no one else there...( I wonder why?) . We decided to leave and were " thanked" as we left. WTF !
Darren
AWFUL don't be fooled by the high rating.....they've clearly written half the views themselves!
Jenny
Probably some of the worst Indian food I've ever had. Naan was soggy and butter chicken had absolutely no flavour

It has become my favourite takeaway spot since i just live ard the corner :)

Chicken briyani was okay...waiting for my lamb version right now in the restaurant. You get what you paid for at the end of the day.

Should give it a go!

You cant go past Bilal for an authentic tasty Goat Biryani!!. The minute you feel like authentic Goat biryani for dinner...the next thing that should come to your mind is the Bilal restaurant on Sydney Road and you will not be disappointed at all!!!
For a party at home, we had ordered Goat Biryani, Chicken masala, vegetable biryani and veggie masala. The guests just loved it and have decided to use Bilal's catering services for the next party they'd host:) what's more...we had close to 5 serves of biryani left which we freezed and had it for 4 days straight...fresh as..when it first arrived for the party!!

So yes...next time you are planning to throw a party and like to have some spicy Indian food catered...ring up Bilal Restaurant and speak to Deen. Your friends will surely love it

Good place to have proper South-Indian food. The Chicken biryani, roti parata, butter chicken, Chilli chicken, crab masala and lamb tikka masala are the best in had there. And the top of it its the best place to have food as a family. What a lovely restaurant, good food and service and atmosphere, definately hope to go back. All briyani were YUMMY. service at front was good and food are served within buffering time.

Nothing special. Wandered in one evening; the place was pretty empty. I ordinarily avoid places that claim to cover more than one specific cuisine, but I was hungry.

Initially, everything seemed okay. Greeting was friendly, menu & water provided quickly so I was able to order quickly. It was difficult getting service after that point, however.

The vegetable samosa was a good start. Pastry was nice and flakey although it was nicely cooked, the flavour was underwhelming. Definitely more of a "pastie" than a samosa.

I also had the Mee Goreng w Lamb. The lamb portion was mince and it was a decent-sized bowl, but although it was a promisingly firey orange colour, it lacked any significant flavour.

I also had the Chilli Gobi - a "battered and deep-fried cauliflower" dish. It came in an indifferent red sauce but no hint of batter. I asked for this to be looked into and the waitress had to go ask. After a short wait another one was brought out, but it looked fairly similar. There was a little more crusted flower on the cauliflower pieces but that was all. A discussion with the guy running the place confirmed a suspicion - their definition of "battered" differed from mine. Theirs means "coated in flower and dumped in hot oil"... not really involving any batter at all.

Putting that aside, the dish itself was uninteresting and the cauliflower a little undercooked.

So, yet another "Asian/Indian" place with indifferent service and ordinary food. Yay. If you're in the area, I reckon you're better off with Bismi, just down the road.

Excellent Food; Everyone Must try!. I came with my friends and the shop was crowed which attracted me to eat inn, the service was really nice and on top of the food was highlight. Chicken biryani, roti parata, chicken manchurian, aloo gobi and crab masala.. all this food impressed me and my friends.!..

Worst Indian Takeaway !! Co.... Worst Indian Takeaway !!
Cold and the vegetable curry had no vegetables - more a watery soup. The rice was cold and bland and took close to an hour to arrive
David Barrett
Horrible !. Food arrived cold, the sambar was like a watery curry soup with no vegetables or lentils to be found. The rice was overly spicy, especially considering we checked mild for the two curries. Called back to complain about the food and the guy didn't speak English or understand us. Probably the worst Indian take away ever!
