Review Roll'd - Brunswick

Lola
Usually when I get the rice bowl it is really good and flavourful, however today when ordered, I was given poor customer service by a young woman who had attitude and couldn’t bother to grab a lid for me, instead pointing at it for me to grab over the counter. I also found upon eating it a black hair in the rice as well as the rice being undercooked and crunchy. Seriosuly dissapointing as I often enjoyed this as a lunch meal.

I ordered takeaway at 7:30pm before their closing time, and waited for 45mins and my order was canceled at 8:30pm without any notice. Of course no phone call answer, no updates. Do not order your food here. There are tons of good Vietnamese on Sydney road. Reply to owner: If you are really sorry and have time to reply on this review, you could've reached out to us first when you canceled our order in the middle of night or answered the phone.

The standards at this Roll'd are indefensible. Produce looked old and sad, kitchen was filthy and only one staff member was there hold the kitchen fort on a busy Saturday afternoon. You just had to look away and hope for the best but what came next was worst than expected. Firstly, pho tasted overly sweet without any broth depth, no herbs and very few tofu. But the worst crime was undercooked pink chicken in a rice dish that carelessly came with an avalanche of rice and a few shreds of lettuce. Fortunately, we got a refund for the chicken but still feeling disturbed as I write this an hour later. Also, using plastic for everything dine in is really not okay in 2022.

Probably the worst banh mi in Melbourne. Served in a hot dog bun? No crunch, chunky fillings, and wildly soggy. The sog factor was just too much for me, I couldn't eat it. Any Vietnam familia's baker would be better than this. Light years away from Nhu Lan. Please try harder if you want to take our money.

The female Vietnamese staff was so kind & lovely, we enjoy the food very much every visit ! Sweet potato fries are super great with the sriracha mayo sauce it comes with !!

The Pho is exceptionally bad, I presume they use pickled vegetables and onions so all I could taste was vinegar. Because of that it smells like it's off so wasn't sure if the ingredients were fresh. Such a shame...

The worst Banh Mi I have ever had. Never thought a pork roll could make me angry. But here we are. Bread was old. Pork was older. Vegetables unspeakable. One star simply for the nice lady who took the order.
Ashley
Wrong change. Fine just a mistake. No urgency in the staff. Bahn mi was pretty bad. I didn’t even expect it to be great but for $9.50. Bread was wrong. Pork was average. Crackling wasn’t much. I asked for chilli but there was no chilli. And two dumb stalks of coriander on top. It’s just so disappointing. You can go to almost any Vietnamese place and get a Bahn mi for $8 and it’s 20 times better. Edit: You don’t need me to email you for you to address the issue. You need to take my feedback, develop a plan and implement it. You have a 2.8 star rating. Many of the other reviews address the same problems I had yet you’ve apparently done nothing to solve it. Low reviews like this don’t come from mistakes or small issues, it comes form a floored system and management. So many roll’d stores have such low rating s. Even lower than McDonald’s. This should be hint enough that what you’re doing, on a fundamental level, is wrong. So let’s go back to the drawing board and figure out a solution. Taking to me and apologising and offering me vouchers or refunds is never going to solve the problems that roll’d in general and especially the Barkley square store has. Your products are average and the service is poor.

I odered the soft shell crab and roast duck rice paper rolls. There was too much vermicelli noodles and lettuce, and not enough filling. I could barely taste the crab (felt like I was eating just the legs), and I could just taste the roast duck which had nice flavours but very thin pieces of meat. The rolls are smaller than other locations making them even more expensive. The service was lovely but I won't go back, not worth the money.

Came here recently for a couple of tofu and salad rice paper rolls. The inside ingredients were edible but the rice paper wraps for both rolls were as hard as a rock! I felt like I nearly lost a tooth. How old are their rice paper wraps, I wonder???

Also, I bought their chicken crispy ribs. Pathetically tiny for approx $5 a box. What a rip off! I'm talking three tiny chicken crispy ribs with each size as tiny as my littlest finger. There were bits of green onion scattered around them. BUT.. what about the red chilli bits as per your deceptive advertising??? They were MISSING. If you run out of ingredients then at least have the bloody decency to admit it to me when I'm ordering at the time.

I felt totally ripped off at this place. No wonder there was no one else eating in there except for me.

The girl behind the counter too busy flirting with fellow Asian male staff.

Ohh... and I must make mention that the place is absolutely filthy. The tables were uncleaned, gooey and just yucky.

I wont be coming back here ever again.

Every time I’m come to Roll’d I always order the noodle or rice bowl with bbq chicken or lemongrass beef.
As pictured this bowl is the noodle one with the bbq chicken!! It is definitely very tasty but can be very sweet at times.
Still a regular and even better when there’s a 50% off your first order through their app!!

Used to come here often due to the lack of pho in Brunswick and was always satisfied but things have changed. Gone are the cremaric bowls pho used to come in, to be replaced by plastic... everything! Who uses plastic in this day and age Roll'd when people are dining in?. Portion sizes are tiny. $12.50 for a beef pho should give me a bowl the size of Texas. Take a leaf from Victoria St and step up. 3 bits of chewy beef does not a fulfilling pho make. 3 staff are obviously not enough either. Had to ask for Sriracha. Do yourself a favour and make some changes or your rating will continue to suffer.
George David Michaelides
As far as rolld goes this was as expected the pho was fairly tasty and the bao was fresh which isn’t always a given sometimes at certain venues, thankfully this one was satisfactory but nothing wowed me

Wouldn't come back for the soldiers. They were dry, thanks to being more than half full of vermicelli. Rice paper roll was actually hard and chewy. Meat was okay but you could barely taste it. At $4 a pop, they are not worth the money.

Giving a 5 because of the super nice lazy who worked there today. Very friendly and clean. Keep it up. Food was good as well and quick service.

Really good Vietnamese food. I love the rolls and the noodle bowls! I love the design of the place, it is very appealing. This place is not some where you can go to often though, as it is quite expensive.

I thought this chain in Brunswick was good. Service was quick even though it was busy and good was standard Roll'd quality. I really like the Pho at Roll'd I always order extra chilli.

K: Ah Roll'd. Every Vietnamese person's nightmare. Why you may ask? For $4 a roll or a 'soldier' you could make about 12 rolls at home that taste better, are bigger in portion and quite frankly just much more authentic. I have never been a fan of these Vietnamese food outlets unless they are reputable restaurants and today my low expectations were reaffirmed.

Thankfully the staff at my work were given these to share so I didn't actually spend any money at all, but I feel like it is still worthwhile adding my very blatant yet constructive criticism. The rolls are nice don't get me wrong. The chicken in these rolls was nice and the hoisin sauce worked well but it just lacked true authenticity, flavour, taste, and freshness. To the general public I can see why they are so appealing. Healthy, and a taste of Asian cuisine right? But to the local Vietnamese Australian or even native, these bring shame to our aunties and uncles from the motherland of Saigon.

If you do not have any possible means of trying Vietnamese rice paper rolls then this is a decent entry. But I would recommend any day of the week to make friends with a true Asian for a real experience. You will taste and feel a world of difference. Opt for sushi instead at Barkly Square :)

Food: 3/5
Service: 3/5
Ambience: N/A
Value: 2/5

Overall: 2.5/5

It would seem I'm not the only person having to give this place a bad rap. I went in just before lunch time and waited 10 minutes while two staff members had a chat. When I then complained about the service, the manager argued back claiming he was having a staff meeting with one staff . When someone complains listen to your clients guys. Your rating on zamato could do with a little improvement and if you listen you might find out how. And by the way an apology which includes 'but' is not an apology.
Lscig1980
Save your money and go somewhere authentic!!Bought the beef pho and the beef the chewy and noodles soggy, mushy and cut up! Broth was ok, we were just desperate for pho as an early lunch, regret it!!

Vietnamese fast food, done badly. I had quite possibly the worst Pork Bahn Mi I've ever eaten, bread was old and dry, there was something strange with the pork pieces, no chilli, no flavour, bland and blah. I also ordered two springrolls which happened to be done well, Nuoc Mam and Spicy Hoisin was again very bland and with little flavour however. If you're looking for authentic Vietnamese food, go someplace else.

We got the Vietnamese Pork Baguettes delivered to Office today. OMG the Baguettes are so old and meat tasted old too... The tiny piece of crackling there was hardly crackling. Disappointing

Just go for the PHO FURR... MUSHROOM and TOFU... Well made.. LOVED it better than HYPED up CHINESE MALAYSIAN Valueless NOODLEBOX franchise DOWN under...

I thank SHERI the QV MANAGER working indirectly from the company maintaining this place.

Ash the manager was so kind and pro active..

My only concern is the NOODLE quantity not sufficient and not filling for $11.50 price tag.. Feel little less..

HIghly Recommended...

It's ok but pretty overpriced for what is on offer. The pho is pretty bland tastes more of powdered stock that a hearty pho should.

Got rolled on the hand roll at 4.50 each. And not very good. Pho no was ok. But took a while to arrive. All in all it's ok. But not as good as a Viet restaurant where you get a pile of bean shoots and mint.
Simmyeats.Melb
BBQ chicken noodle salad was ordered, the look of the dish spoke for itself. No real flavours here, quite bland and boring. The BBQ chicken didn't seem bbq at all but more just a teriyaki sauce and the chicken was fatty. Definitely not the Vietnamese I am used to down Victoria St and feel that just because it's a franchise shouldn't make the food a lesser quality.

Been here about 4-5 times. Pho always good. Wish they had chilli oil on the table. Did not like the special spring rolls though... very oily, I was there quite early, maybe the oil had not heated up enough yet.

I will go back 👍

Terribly over priced and unfortunately no good value meal deals. Portions are small and not filling. The food itself is rather bland. Also the Staff not very friendly and the premises looks dirty. I'm sorry to say but it's just not worth it.

Had a meal here Friday probably one of the worst Vietnamese food I have had, roll was stale didn't hardly have any coriander or sauce you usually get in a roll lacked taste, and the noodle with vegetables was terrible did not have any taste they appear to run out of ingredients. This is a franchise operation and the Franchisee is not doing his job you can go around the corner into Sydney rd and have a much better roll lots more flavor and lot cheaper. Will not be going back.
RotKW
Isn't Vietnamese food supposed to be rich flavours? The food today was hospital bland.
And everything served in disposable containers. Another hospital-ish quality.

Ew.

Sooo dissapointed. Picked up some rice paper rolls for dinner and when I went to eat them they were so hard and dry. I can't believe they were sold like. What an absolute waste of money and food. Will never go back and will share my thoughts. Fresh is the best!!

The other Roll'd stores in Melbourne are usually fantastic! Fresh and tasty are usually the key components of all their offerings.

The Roll'd in Barkly Square however is disappointing to say the least.
Lack of variety, the taste and execution is just not up to scratch in comparison to the other Roll'd stores.

Have come back a few times as I was hopeful that I had just come on a bad day previously.. Sad to say I won't be returning after 3 misses.

The pork and prawn salad was delicious and a big serving - slightly too much dressing though. The chicken ribs were yummy and meaty - would go back to try the pho

Just another day when roll'd don't have stock. They run out of bread, they run out of pork, they run out of Spring rolls. Get your stock controls right roll'd management because it's a bit ridiculous to not be able to get a roll from roll'd at lunch time.
Sometimes, a big bowl of steamy pho is exactly what the doctor ordered. There is, however, a distinct lack of pho restaurants in the Brunswick area. Luckily, Barkley Square (or as we locals affectionately term it, Sparkly Bear) opened a Roll’d during its revitalisation project about a year ago.

The bakery on Sydney Rd, next to Barkley square entrance, less than 30m away makes better, dress her, fuller bihn mi, and cheaper too. I go there instead now.

Consistently bad, and I have finally given up. They get your order wrong most of the time and the chicken pho has 3 tiny strands of chicken and it's not as fresh. Never again this place and it's a shame because I live close by:(

They have sweet potato fries! Surprisingly hard to find around this area and the rolls are always a great snack. The rebranding that has taken place recently seems mostly good. The service is faster and the food seems to remain at fresh quality.

Tried the pho three times - absolutely dissatisfied- the cbd stores put you to shame - broth at your store is consistently Luke warm and pretty light on flavour and you are stingy on the beans sprouts, basil even the onion - I keep going back hoping for delicious Pho but after tonight's disappointment I think I will resign myself to getting good pho at the cbd stoes
Food Glorious....
Always come back for the Pho!. Wow! The previous reviews smell of jealous competitors! I see more people queing for food at Roll'd than the two other food places nearby. I love the Pho, it's tasty, nice and spicy and great value. There always seem to be people eating at tables so can't be too bad. The staff are always friendly and polite.
I've tried their rice paper rolls which could do with a bit more filling (not just noodles) but again, enjoy the variety of sauces that go with them.

Twice disappointed in two months. Cannot believe how much the taste and quality can change between stores. I love the CBD shop but for the second time in two months I have ordered chicken rice paper rolls and on both occasions could not finish them.. Stingy on the chicken, chicken parts were chewy and made me feel I'll when I tried to eat them and I ended up spitting it into my serviet. To top it of the rolls were mainly made up of rice with very little substance.
My partner has has the Pho and the rolls all of
Which were stingy on the ingredients and not tasty at all. Thoroughly disappointed and I won't make the same mistake a third time.
I don't not recommend this place to anyone.

Concept is great. However service in this particular take out store is slow. The menu has changed since opening and has become dismal. Portions are small to for cost.
Simone
Very ordinary pho! The broth was very bland.

Classic pork roll. Today I ordered a pork roll to take away. It was smothered in margarine.

Visited a few times - mixed feelings. I tend to have the lemongrass beef dish which sometimes has been great other times not as good. By saying not as good today I say it because the cold ingredients of the dish were really soggy - noodles, the cucumber and carrot. The beef also had one piece in it that was cut really thick - it was very tough. I've had that before too - thin slices and then a couple of thicker bits.

Also I would recommend the sample picture of the spring roll dish on the wall behind the counter be changed. The spring rolls you serve do not look like that picture.

Really disappointing. Firstly the prawn and pork salad had one prawn in it, no pork .... Basically an expensive salad.

To top it off, staff started to speep up floor around me just as I was about to eat.

Average. Firstly, there are far too many noodles in the rice paper rolls, and hardly any of the other fillings, so it feels like a bit of a rip-off.

Secondly, it wouldn't hurt to add some fresh HERBS - that's what make rice paper rolls so delicious! The Roll'd rice paper rolls are bland.

Thirdly, the stupid dipping sauce containers are too small - you can't actually fit your roll in for dipping.

Overall though, a healthy lunch, reasonable value, if a bit bland and boring. Which is a shame, because Vietnamese food is usually bursting with flavour.

Finally I can have a rice paper roll in Brunswick? Not likely!. I could live on rice paper rolls, so was excited when this place opened. Alas, the rice paper roll was actually impossible to eat. It had either dried out or was never soaked properly in the first place. I have never had this happen before, and I eat a lot of them! My dad had Pho and the look on his face!... he said it was terrible.

Fresh tasty food

I've had this a few times and I've been pleased. I love the classic pork roll. Fresh and tasty. Service and organisation has improved since they opened. Downside is the price. $8 for a pork roll

I bought a tofu soldier and the smell of the rice paper roll put me off. Took one bite and had to spit it out and throw rest away. I must have had a bad one. Had soldiers from other roll'd venues and it was fresh.

Rolls not made freshly, pho ok, logistics poor - staff on go slow or something. Not busy, yet 15 mins to deliver pre made food. Certainly not the service of Street Food in Vietnam!

Roll'd is at the entrance of the Barkeley shopping square and the most popular eating place in the complex. Not that there are many choices. The Vietnamese place has phos and bahn mis and rolls. I had...

Roll'd is suddenly everywhere! The Barkly Square branch opened up towards the end of last year and since then, seems to be doing well. I have visited a few times now ordering different dishes and going at different times of the day or different days. I have two main conclusions, 1) not all Roll'd are created equal, and 2) this place struggles with consistency. So, if it's great one day, might not be so the next but if it was bad, then it might be good the next. It's not a disaster but consistency is a pretty important thing for the discerning Brunswick punter. Let's face it, because it's a chain, no one is going to drive across different suburbs to eat there - they can probably find one closer to them. This is a really small space and really nicely decorated. In fact, it's one of the more trendy looking Roll'd I have seen. It's also very open, with lots of air and sunlight. It's a space for quick and casual dining. They have all the usual 'fast food' Vietnamese style offerings but the
