Review Gia Vien - Burwood

Matthew Yong-O'Gorman
3.5 Stars. The Pho is disappointing, the rare beef cuts are tough and they put the bean sprouts and mint in the soup prior to serving which I've always felt is a big no-no. Fresh spring rolls are fantastic, service is hit and miss and it isn't too expensive. There are better pho's, but you'd have to go for a bit of a drive to get there from Burwood.

Everything was delicious and flavoursome! All the dishes were nice and hot too. Great simple service.

Service and food is alright! 3/5 for a quick Vietnamese dinner I bought the typical prawn paper rolls, pho and lotus salad. Plus- prawn paper rolls were tasty, sauce was great. Pho was average but survived so its a minus pass. Minus - turned out they dont have lotus that replace with other herbs and vegs. It’s $18 for the dish I could have not bought this if they were honest!

I'm giving 2 stars because the service at front of house was good. However, the food was not good. We had a takeaway and it was ready suspiciously quickly. It did not seem fresh. The next day my whole family was sick with stomach cramps. I won't be going back and would advise other prospective customers to avoid this place. Their dishes are short on meat and padded out with vermicelli, rice or salad to make up the portion size, probably so they can put a big markup on the food and maximise profits. But the worst thing is the poor quality of the food itself. If you order Vietnamese food, you're doing it because you want nice fresh ingredients. You certainly don't expect to get sick! Apparently there are decent Vietnamese restaurants in Five Dock and Summer Hill, but after this experience to be honest I'll be giving Vietnamese food a miss and going for something else.

Pho soup was hot and tasty but the bean sprouts were all broken (i.e. the ones that you see at the bottom of the packet from the supermarket). Rare beef pieces were all very small and broken too. Just bordering on average overall.

Good spot for a good old fashioned pho. Genuine flavour. Popular with the locals. Quick service and friendly staff do there best to make you smile.

Service was good, they were attentive to details. The place was nice and clean. The food was delicious. Had seafood laksa and beef pho. The fresh spring roll was so good there was no time to take a picture. Their peanut sauce was great especially with the crushed peanuts. Best place to eat during cold winter days/nights. My partner loved the K-pop music in the background.

This is my favourite Pho restaurant. I have been coming here regularly since 2010. Consistently good every time and reasonably priced. Now they have $10 pho Tuesdays which is great! Friendly wait staff and always quick service. Would like to comment on the other food but I'm afraid I can't look past the Pho. I recently travelled to Vietnam and made comparisons. Equally good, if not better than Vietnam.

Like walking into HCMC Great friendly service and food to match

It's a small restaurant with a giant heart. Love it.

Coming here often. Very delicious food and renovated interior.

Visited here randomly with a friend and wouldn’t recommend or come back. Although service was great, a few dishes couldn’t be tailored for or were unavailable which we thought was odd (however excusable due to COVID-19) possibly limiting supplies or availability to source certain ingredients but overall dishes were below average.

One of my favourite locals! Lovely food, prices and staff. The quality has always been amazing and all dishes taste great, especially my favourite the combination vermicelli! Highly recommended!

I was here for dinner on a Saturday night. Nice cosy place with one of the best pho in burwood. We had the chicken and veg pho and it was amazing. It held like you are eating at home. The customer service is top as well. See you soon.

One of the best Vietnamese food I’ve eaten in Sydney so far. Pho is delicious and rich in flavor, beef is tender. Combination rice is good too, a lot of food on the plate.

Gia Vien is Vietnamese restaurant that I go regularly to satisfy my pho cravings when I’m in Burwood. I like their raw beef pho as you can order beef tendon with it.

Best pho in the area. Inexpensive and friendly-staff

The pho is a must try. We had the pho dac biet and pho tai. If you would like combination go for the pho dac biet, otherwise the pho tai has a good portion of beef as well.

Deep fried Spring rolls are awesome.

The fried ice cream is also something to end the meal.

Will definitely recommend and come back again.

I ordered a chicken laksa and they're super generous with toppings here- tons of tofu, chicken, and veges. The pho was nothing special, but tasty enough to satisfy cravings. Service a little slow, but the food came out fast and it was a good experience

After the renovation, Gian Vien feels cleaner and more welcoming than before, and the staff are always polite and friendly. In terms of food, they are alright, nothing special in particular, it is not outstanding but it certainly is decent enough to fulfil some pho cravings. They are also generous with their potion, toppings and bean sprouts.

Agree with one of the previous reviews. This place is a hit and miss. However I probably wouldn't recommend this place to anyone and would've given two stars if it wasn't for the 2 cockroaches I saw crawling up the wall behind the photo frames.

Walked in, walked out next 5 minutes. Such a shame, the staff has been incredibly rude. This place has been our regular takeaway place for many years.

We were only requesting for a bigger table as i am planning to order more than 2 meals. Table was dirty, so I asked him to give it a wipe. To my shock and horror, he refused and rudely answered: "That's a lesson, I asked you to sit there!! ".
He walked away, didn't bother to come back. Thanks for the prompt rudeness, at least we didn't waste time there. Hope your boss reads this so he can ask you to improve your customer service skills!!!

Place is hit and miss. Only thing I would order is there vermicelli. Stay away from the Laska. Was watery and tasteless. The amount of meat in the dishes is stingy as well.

After renovation, this place indeed looks more neat. However it feels like the customers are paying for the renovation. A medium size bowl of pho is makes up to 13 and 15 for combination. It's more expensive than most pho places. Taste.. not the best.

Came here for a quick byte. Ordered Bun Dsc Biet and Rare Beef and meatball pho.

The Bun Dac biet us very nice. Spring rolls pork chop and the sauce are nice. That ssid there is room for improvement in the fish sauce and satay chili department .

Rare beef and meatball pho is also as expected. The beef stock is aromatic enough however the rice noodle is a bit too soft to our liking.

Bottom line : Good food. Good service. Good Value.

Comparing this to Mint up the road, I had the Pho Tai ($13).
I was seated quickly, staff were courteous and food came out quickly.

Food wise, it was ok. Nothing special. I prefer Mint. I find their pho to be more flavoursome. The pho here was lacking some flavour. Could be a new batch of pho soup.

Serving was sufficient size for me though.

COCKROACH IN MY FOOD!!!!!!
I ordered the tomato rice fried chicken dish for takeaway. When I got home, I tipped the contents of the container into a bowl and right on top of the pile of rice was a medium sized cockroach (presumably dead). If you can't serve cockroach-free food, then you shouldn't be in business!

It's been a while since I've been here, they have made improvements with the ambience here and have more staff on. Food wise it has improved than last time I've been here but still not Cabramatta level. The 4 rices dish which is the rice dish with pork chop, egg, pork pattie and pork shreds, not bad but the pork chop was a little dry. Price wise I have to accept that it's the norm now among all Vietnamese restaurants.service wise nil
Issues,no longer a bad option in Burwood

Nice refreshing flavours. Good pho. Not quite as good as Vietnamese in Marrickville but still worth it. Reasonable prices and good value. The decor has been recently updated.

Great chicken lemongrass vermicelli. Fantastic chilli lemongrass prawns but only 4 on the plate and terrible rice. Stick with the vermicelli.
Kyle_wahanui
Great find.. The fresh spring rolls were yummy and then the Special beef soup to follow was delish. Actually all the pho /soup are very good and the deep fried flounder is amazing. Very reasonably priced and quick service.

A handy little Vietnamese place on Burwood, just perfect for a quick lunch or some takeaway. Delicious pho, noodle salads and broken rice dishes. Everything else looks a bit
Lily_nz80
Delicious beef pho. It would've been better if there were more herbs.

Don't know why this place rates so highly. Tomato rice extremely dry and bland. Seafood Pho was OK, but nothing to rave about. Won't be back.

Pho Ga - good as you will get. I was impressed with the Pho here. Although it was more the South Vietnam variety which is sweet compared to the saltier North Vietnamese version, it is as good as you will get here. Most importantly the Pho wasn't overfilled with vegetables and bean sprouts like other places. Pho in Vietnam is not served with bean sprouts EVER! Very satisfactory price, service etc

Disconcerting smell.... Pho No1 has had a minor facelift and now goes by the name Gia Vien. Sadly, the only thing that stood out from dinner tonight was the faint, stale smell in the background. My grilled chicken vermicelli noodles (bun thit ga) was alright but I couldn't really enjoy it due to the odd pong that lingered throughout the night - did not make for a pleasant dining experience.

Great for Lunch during the Warmer Days. For a pleasant lunch which refreshes during the hotter months this is an easy going restaurant with a wonderful blend of vibrant Vietnamese flavours.

While the service was prompt there was a slight issue arising from the language barrier and you really find yourself relying on the pictures and pointing at items in the menu when placing the order.

The surroundings are not exactly top notch but this small restaurant is reasonably priced and the quantities are generous.

Not bad. Lemongrass chicken was spicy, tasty and serving was generous. Pork chop with broken rice was just okay.

Great soup, great value! Check your change when paying, we've been over charged so many times that it's become a running joke to see how much extra they will try and charge at the end!
