Review Taste Of Shanghai - Burwood

Miss Deliziosa
Situated right next to the front entrance of Burwood Westfield. We came on a Saturday night without a booking & waited approx 20mins the line seemed to die down after that suggest to try come before 6pm or after 7pm to avoid having to wait too long. You can also have a drink (alcoholic or non alcoholic) whilst waiting for your table. The food was very tasty & enjoyed all the dishes. Would love to try the fish dish which I saw on quite a few tables if I get to go here again (I think it was fried fish with sweet & sour sauce). Service was also very friendly & attentive. This place is good for small & large tables & looks like it’s kid friendly.

⭐️Taste of Shanghai⭐️ Highly recommended, go to their Burwood store and try their iconic Xiao Long bao dumplings and other Shanghai and Northern Chinese dishes! I honestly loved all the dishes that I ordered, but the one that stood out the most was their new fried chicken bucket with mayo and chilli spices 🌶. Their service was great and the prices are affordable. I will be coming back here again! . . . FEATURED: ⭐️Xiao long bao $12.80 ⭐️Dry fried beef in rice noodles with bean sprouts and dark Soya sauce $14.80 ⭐️Crispy pillow buns with condensed milk $7.80 ⭐️Lamb ribs smoked in spices $22.80 ⭐️Flash fried snow pea sprouts with XO sauce $19.80 ⭐️Crispy chicken nugget bucket $13.80 ⭐️Jasmine tea $1.50pp

Make a booking!! We went on a Tuesday night and has to wait 40mins just for a table of 3. This place gets really busy even later in the night Food was delicious and service was consistent. Ordered way too much, their menu is enormous

Be prepared for a lengthy wait line! We waited for over an hour during a Friday evening. They offer a call back when your table is available or you can wait at the entrance inside. It can get packed while waiting. To help time pass quicker, you can browse the menu and select the dishes you would like. We ordered in total 4 dishes; corn soup, yangzhou style fried rice, fried noodles with pork & vegetables, and xiao long bao. This cost $50.70 which is quite affordable for their generous portions. The corn soup was hearty, however, after a few spoon fulls- the soup quickly became thin. The yangzhou fried rice are customers favourite and there is a reason for it. There was a nice smokiness infused in the rice. The ham also helps compliment the depth of flavour. Unfortunately, the fried noodles was a let down. Too much oil and a heavy taste of sesame oil which did work with the noodle (see the photo attached). The xiao long bao was nice but nothing extraordinary. The meaty broth gave the interior a nice warmth. The dough was perfect, not too doughy or thin. Overall, not a bad experience. The servers were attentive and friendly. Will come back to try more dishes but will definitely book a reservation to avoid a long wait!

Amazing authentic Chinese restaurant! Great for big family gatherings or just a small group. The design is very welcoming and a lively environment. Food is amazing and there are so many dishes to choose. The lobster noodles are huge and delicious. The pan fried buns are super soft with a crispy bottom. Everything is very flavourful and high quality. Service is super friendly and with care.

This was my first time time dining here, I actually had the craving for xiao long bao which I was not dissapointed with. We also decided to try the deep fried barramundi drizzled with sweet and sour sauce and ordered a side of some green veges to go with it. Overall me and the wife was very impressed and will be coming back with friends so we can sample more of the menu.

My family always has a great time at this restaurant. Great food and friendly staff. Even got the membership.

Great food. Great service. Lovely atmosphere. Make sure to book!!! Came here on a Sunday night without booking and waited for 1.5 hours. Had a lot of people waiting without reservations too and they were very impatient. Staff were very kind. The food was worth the wait!

This place seems to be crowded so I finally decided to try it out. Afterwards I couldn’t figure out why it was so packed with people as the quality of the food wasn’t that fantastic and was expensive.

Xiao Bao soupy dumplings were the best out of a bad bunch but it lacked ginger in the filling that you get at speciality places in Ashfield.

The meat in the brisket hotpot was dry and nowhere near as good as you get at other Chinese places where it melts in your mouth. The dish also missing slow cook tendon that is like a savoury Turkish delight.

Worst dish was the wontons in red chilli sauce. The filling look like there was no meat in it and totally bland. Doesn’t compare to what you get in Enmore.

Mint and Lychee cocktail was the highlight of the night. Staff were friendly as well.

This outlet is located out the front of Westfield Burwood on Burwood Road. Consistency is key here as part of this chain dotted throughout Sydney. When we arrived it was fully booked and told it would be a 1/2 hour wait. We were given a number and mobile taken so they could call us when the table was ready. True to their word, they called us under the 1/2 hour wait time given to return back to restaurant. The service was swift and efficient.

The usual favourites were available and their dumplings are always enjoyable. We chose to Steamed Pork And Chives Dumpling, Shanghai Style Steamed Sticky Rice Dumplings, and Black Truffle Xiao Long Bao. All the dumpling skins are delicate and well made. The fillings for all 3 are delicious. The Kung Pao Chicken was flavoursome with a hint of chilli spice. Wok Fried Rice Cakes were chewy tasty bites combined with pork and cabbage.

Like previous review, restaurant did not receive booking through zomato but was really nice in accomodating us (lucky to have a table at 12.30 on a sunday!). Food was decent and good quality just like all Taste of shanghai outlets however the wait for food was a bit long.

Above average Chinese food and solid atmosphere and architecture of restaurant. However, Chinese is an inferior cuisine compared to other Asian cuisines like Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Malaysian etc...
Sandy
I made a booking through Zomato but the staff at the restaurant did not get notice of this hence, I recommend calling up the restaurant to ensure your booking goes through. However, the staff that served me at the door was sympathetic and understood my situation and gave me the next available table. I did not get her name but she delivered great customer service! In fact all staff that I encountered at this restaurant have always been pleasant and approachable 👍🏼

I came here on a Friday at 8pm and it was still packed so it is recommended to book on a weekend. This is also my third visit here and they have always been up to par and never disappoint.

I ordered the xiao long bao dumplings, pan fried pork buns, prawn noodles with xo sauce and the coloured dumplings (I think this is a cny limited time special). The dumplings were all fresh and delicious 🥟 but the prawn noodles were quite oily, still good in flavour but a bit too oily for my liking.

I always recommend this place to everyone, food is delicious and service is amazing!

I give this a 2 star rating, mainly because of the extremely slow service. We got our order, which was basically a plate of fried tofu, 2 bowls of noodles and some rice, and it took them more than 40 minutes to arrive. Asked the servers multiple times what's the status of our dishes and they said they will check up on it, only to forget about 10 minutes later. When we complained of the inefficient service and asked to cancel our order, they said it will arrive in 2 minutes. However, this meal came in 5 minutes instead. They gave us no discounts for the inconvenience, and I strongly believe that a restaurant like this, should have efficient and fast cooking times. I don't think I'll come here again, but I'll give them credit for really good salted egg fried tofu.
Food Is Life
My rating is a 3.5. We had only ordered 3 plates of dumplings and it was enough to keep 2 people full. Overall the food was nice but there was nothing special about it. Maybe next time, I'll endeavour to explore the menu further.

The service was great, but what was a downer was that we were served with dirty glasses of water. It was clearly not washed properly, very foggy and had old food stuck to it. The wait time between the first dumpling served and the next two dishes was a little long, but lucky we were busy chatting away as we waited for our next servings of dumplings.

I would go again because the people were lovely, the food was nice and affordable to an extent. But next time I'll be checking the cleanliness of the glasses and utensils before I used them.

Beautiful Asian inspired dark and moody fit out in this restaurant just outside of westfield. We had the pan fried pork buns. These were crispy on the bottom, steamed on the top and soup filled but be very careful as they are very hot! My kids wanted sui mai but they didn't have the Cantonese style so we had the rice filled siu mai which were full of flavour. The spring rolls were very crispy but the filing was a little bland for me

Delicious! It’s good to go with many friends to share more meals and save money! Besides, it’s more cheaper if you register for the member of the restaurant! I go with 6 people and ordered 8 dishes, we shared around $30 for each and no drinks! I recommend to go with the group or more friends to have more choices and save money! It’s worth to try!

Great seating area, spacious. Gets busy at dinner time.

The small wonton is the best. You could also buy the frozen for stocking up your freezer.

Super delicious Chinese food! I ordered the pan fried pork buns and they were absolutely divine. They were cooked to perfection and the soup inside was amazing. I also ordered the chive and prawn dumplings which were great and the spring onion pancake.

Only downfall was the fact that the table was super close to other tables where I was seated and due to this it was pretty loud and couldn’t really have a conversation.

I would definitely go again to try out more of their menu! Perfect to go in a small or big group as there’s various seating arrangements and food that’s easy to share.

The Taste of Shanghai in Burwood is a branch that seems to be aiming to be more upscale in terms of their settings, comparing to the other branches. And it does deliver, with nicer presentation of food and a more romantic ambience.

Yes it’s worth the wait! We waited nearly an hour, but food came out quick and service was prompt.
The Xiao Long Bao meat and soup was nice and the skin wasn’t too thick. The wonton and chili oil was one of my fav dishes bursting with flavor.
The black pepper and teriyaki beef was cooked well and a must try. I can also say the same for the shredded eel, but this dish could be eaten as an entree. The good cold steamed duck is rare to find and did not disappoint ! We also tried the cuttlefish ink noodle which has a very interesting taste that I can’t seem to describe, the texture is also quite jelly like...
Alwaysss love their Xiao Long Bao and i think they have the best Wonton in Chilli Oil!! Their other dishes are very delish too and they keep changing their specials which keeps them very exciting! The place could get cery busy towards dinner so make sure to book a table!

The photos are just some of the many dishes ive eaten at this place! Haha.

I used to be a big fan and went again recently but when I compare the food to other places in Burwood, this place has lost its quality in food. Their fried rice were very oily and didn’t taste good and their dumplings were slightly more expensive than other dumpling places though they weren’t as good.

Taste of Shanghai is one of my favourite Shanghainese restaurants. Pictured is xiao long bao, pork soup dumplings. You know you can never go wrong by ordering these babies!
RWfoodie
Beautifully decorated joint located right next to Burwood Westfields. This place is famous for their famous Xiao Long Baos (Pork Soup Dumpling) and Pan fried pork buns. Both very delicious and worth the 10 minute wait!

I have been to Taste of Shanghai in Burwood many times in the past and I have always found the food to be a little underwhelming. Nevertheless, I returned because I needed a quick, easy meal with reliable service. After ordering, I was promptly given a receipt of the meal and was told that after I finished, I had to go up to the counter to pay. That was standard procedure all the other times I had been there, so I agreed and thanked the waitress. About 10 minutes later, I was halfway through my meal and not all of my dishes had even arrived yet, but a different waitress approached my table and asked me to pay there and then. I explained my confusion, since that had never been the case before and I had just been told by another waitress to pay at the counter. However, this waitress, armed with a credit card machine, retorted back, "well I'm here now so you have to pay now". I didn't want to make a scene, so I paid promptly, but this was incredibly rude. Not only was it intrusive to my meal, it seemed to suggest that they didn't trust me to pay. This was confirmed because there were other people eating at the same time and no one approached them to pay as the waitress did to me. Additionally, the food was underwhelming again. I was disappointed with the food, but even more so with the service. I will not be returning here again.

Our favourite Chinese dumpling restaurant !! With dumplings everywhere these days , you have a plethora of places to choose from without having to go very far , Burwood included - it’s really easy to find places. But we pick taste of Shanghai for many reasons , firstly the food . The menu is very interesting , you can pick between dumplings , main meat dishes , veggies and rice. We always order the prawn dumplings and the pork shumai as a staple at any dumpling or yum cha place , so tick! Then we ordered the salt and pepper prawns with crackers and the seafood fried rice . Wow ... we were blown away with how delicious the prawns and crackers were , along with the fried rice which was full of little seafood morsels ... the staff are friendly and attentive , making sure we received everything we ordered and happy to answer questions we had. The atmosphere is also quite cool and you feel like you are taken away into an expensive Chinese restaurant without the dingy feels. We go here every couple of months and always happy!

Hundreds of good Chinese food in Burwood. so people, please don't go to this place.
Cost more than $26 to ordered this Braised pork belly in bamboo shoots for take away. Searched for like 10mins for a single pork belly when we got home. End up we got 3 pork belly and spend all those money for a box of bamboo.
Don't even wanna rate for a single star.
NEVER EVER go there again.

Have been to other branches, best experience by far from this restaurant chain. Even though it was pretty busy on a Monday night, service was still pretty efficient and friendly. All dishes were tasty except the seafood squid ink rice was not as flavoursome. Personal favourite was the deep fried sweet and sour whole fish.

Disappointing of Shanghai

When we enter the place it looks great, it was busy, it was lively and it was packed and customers. We had to wait for 30 minutes to get a seat and we were excited to eat some food.

We finally got a seat after more than 30 minutes of waiting and we waited for another 20 minutes to get food. The dumplings was the first to come out and I admit it was really good. As we enjoyed our food the waiter came back and told us there's no more chili chicken, there was no chicken feet and we were disappointed so we ordered the kampao chicken.

The food came after another 30 minutes and they gave us a small amount of kampao chicken. It wasn't worth the wait. We ordered 5 bowl of rice, the waiter have us 4 bowl and didn't come back until my brother asked for more.

Desert came last but it was decent, we had mango icecream pancakes which comes in 3 so we half the dessert to share. I honestly think the food is overpriced, specially the kampao chicken. They charge us 25 dollars for one small dish.

Would not recommend this place for dinner.

Had to wait a little for a table but it was alright as there was a waiting area with a significant amount of seats. The food came promptly after we ordered and tasted really good compared to the first time I visited. My highlights were the watermelon juice drink and the pork chop dish I tried for the first time. The flavouring was so addicting to eat! The classic Xiao long bao didn't disappoint and the pot stickers were sooo authentic as well! Was too full to order dessert but their mango pancake is also really good.

Taste of Shanghai provides delicious Shanghai style food in beautifully designed surrounds. The hot pots are a must try and come out with a small burner to keep the food hot. I really like the decor here.

My only gripe is that they don’t let you share tea with others on your table.

I’m actually a frequent taste of Shanghai Ashfield customer, so I was actually really excited when it opened in Burwood. The deco was really nice. However, the kitchen was slow took ages for food to come out. The fried rice cakes were not nice :( it was the turning point for me for taste of Shanghai after having that meal- the rice cakes were oily and gross in comparison to the Ashfield store.

A quite nite with my mum... I was amazed about the deco. Food was fantastic and I’m surprised to find something like that in Burwood... must have the fried rice! I think it’s the one of the best in Sydney~
Sydneyguyrojoe
Good quality food and nice laneway with electric billboards that's a nice touch. But the prices are a little more than other places and there seems to be a time limit before they start asking people to vacate the table

What I am about to write in this blog is something very close to my heart. It’s a type of regional Chinese cuisine I was familiar with long before I came to appreciate fresh sashimi or aged Jamon Iberico, it is the cuisine of my birth city. Since moved to Australia, one of the things I have missed the most, apart from my family and friends, were the dumplings I grew up with, both steamed and pan fried. Visiting a dumpling restaurant was often top of the itinerary whenever I travelled back. But to feast on dumplings no longer took an 11-hour flight every 12 months thanks to the opening of first Taste of Shanghai branch in Sydney’s inner west suburb of Ashfield in 2005.

Huge variety of Chinese-oriented dishes! Was looking forward to trying their mango pancakes the most and they did not disappoint - would definitely return to try more on their menu (all the dishes we ordered for dinner were very tasty) but they do get quite packed after 7pm on weekends so booking a table is more convenient.

My favourite restaurant for Shanghainese cuisine. Always have to order their xiao long bao and pan fried buns. The dishes from their main menu, such as drunken chicken and snow crab are very authentic, great place for family dinners. Finished with the mango pancakes, which was one of the highlights of my meal.

Enjoyed our experience over there. Will definitely go back again. The dishes came very fast. We loved the flavour. The location is very convenient right outside Westfield.

Traditional Chinese food with good presentations, and improved based on westerner preferences. Recommend pork belly and mango pancakes; the pan fried pork buns have slightly thick skin. The food overall tastes like mum's cook, not surprisingly good, but nothing is bad. They have a good range of drinks as well, recommend to who wants to try Chinese food but too scared to try. 😂👍🏼

We received an invite to attend a media launch at the shiny new Taste of Shanghai Burwood restaurant. It is a huge space attached to Westfield shopping centre; with a large open kitchen and modern fit out with decorative reference to Shanghai. This new venue is sophisticated and complete with a bar which is right in front of you at the entrance. There is also a private dining room, complete with two large round tables both with an extravagant marble lazy Susan.
