Review Base And Bowl - Burwood

Amber Kelly-Ringrose
Bruschetta was amazing! So many tomato’s, best balsamic vinegar, really delicious = Great value for money!!! Chef was really warm & accomodating. Waitress was quick to bring my husbands glass of ice. Simple but impressed my husband because 95% of places forget it. My pasta was interesting, never had anything like it. Parts I really liked, others not so keen on. My husbands Pizza was well pineapples but had a strong smell. I would also suggest the garlic bread been made in house, rather than the frozen pre-made kind.

Best Egyptian food on secret part of menu. My favourite dessert of all time is their Om Ali - sort of a like a bread pudding

'ate' here recently and was very very disappointed. The Egyptian menu looked ok on other tables but my pesto pasta was inedible. It swam in cheap oil and cream ... And had split/curdled. Lost my appetite after two mouthfuls and was offered the opportunity to take it home to eat later. Best missed.

Came on a quiet Sunday, greeted well by staff at front counter, very friendly welcome, and waitress was very prompt too. Sat in the back area which does feel a little cheap but in a cutely quaint way. Best of all, the pizza was awesome and flourless chocolate cake was just delicious, can't wait to go again.

All I can talk to is the pizza... and take out only - BUT: it is quick, fresh, tasty and 2 large pizzas for $30 pick up is mean. One comment would be that we have found the pizzas a little underdone, so when ordering we ask for them to be "extra cooked" which the team are always happy to accomodate. Over all a nice, fresh and friendly pizza joint.

I have tried several restaurants that claim to serve Egyptian food... they all basically sucked. This one is right on the money. Their Egyptian food is really authentic and absolutely delicious. Tried their shawerma and koushari, everything was the way it is meant to be. Big portions, quality food, very friendly service, and overall great value for money. We left feeling full and satisfied with a hearty meal from back home. We will definitely be coming back.

Awesome pizza and decent sized as well. Reasonable price and friendly service. Accepts card and cash. Didn't seem to have any aircon (it was a fairly stifling day when I visited) and the fans didn't really do enough. Having said that, very pleased with the quality of food and service.

Excellent venue! Have and will keep coming back. The head chef has made the effort to introduce himself and ensure great quality food and exceptional customer service every time I've been. Also both an Italian and Egyptian menu are available, and the Egyptian Foul's bread is made fresh.

Had one of the best pizza's in Sydney today. The Siciliana was to die for. Also the new Egyptian menu stole the show for me. The freshness of the home style Egyptian food made me wanting more. My family enjoyed every moment. Great food, awesome atmosphere, a great night out. Thank you guys - Great Job!!!!

It’s impossible to cook now because we’ve packed our kitchen as we’re moving so Christmas this year would’ve been without all the yummy Egyptian food however I found this restaurant called Base and Bowel that also makes Egyptian food in burwood which meant the kids and us didn’t miss out on molokheya, bamya, fatta, fish, om Ali and lots of other goodies. The owner Adel is the kindest man ever and even delivered it to me even though he doesn’t do delivery to my area because of our situation. I highly recommend you try or if anyone wants to try Egyptian food then send them his way. Such good quality, delicious, authentic home made food. Merry Christmas

This is the gem I stumbled upon through my good friends and what a discovery that was. This is authentic Egyptian food as if my nan is still alive and I have access to a multitude of shops in Egypt. First visit and I am a fan already!!!

We had a great experience at Base and Bowl. The food was awesome, the service was marvellous and the people were nice snd friendly. Their pizza dough is one of the best. Make sure you try their flat bread dips and their Nutella pizzas too, they're to die for....

The best Italian pizza and I loved the flat bread myself and my friends we had a very nice meal and the staff were all very welcomed and the restaurant enviroment is very nice

Great customer service and delicious traditional Egyptian food as an option as well as the Italian!

Definitely the best local pizza and pasta place! Food is amazing, I haven't been disappointed with any of the dishes I have tried here. The staff are very friendly too - always happy to accommodate! The space in the main area isn't huge but there's a big covered courtyard at the back. Keep up the good work guys :)

Egyptian menu is simply amazing, I tried most of it musaka Molokhia koshary kebdah falafel kaware3 all perfect

The service was very slow and bad as I was waiting for very long for them to take my order. Food was okay but nothing special. My experience was not that great and I would not comeback again.

The vegan pizza I ordered was pleasant, but it also wasn't anything special. The toppings were a little stingy which was a shame. My colleagues tried the egyptian food and seemed to have no problems with it, however it was also not particularly memorable either.

Unfortunately this restaurant wasn't for us. We were expecting a little more Italian flavour than what we got. Our pizza was very basic and our pasta seemed as if it was drowning in very watery sauce.

This our second time come here and we were happy again for all dishes we ordered. The beef was a bit dry but still taste good. The highlight dish was creamy prawn with some toasted bread.

I think they have a new management and they add new Egyptian menu but still put up great Italian food.

I decided to try this Italian joint because of the positive reviews. Food was good considering the price. All of us really enjoyed the pizza and marinara. Just one criticism, I was told that the order was $51 over the phone by the girl. But when we picked up it turned out to be $53.60. The waitress said they have changed the advertised pizza deal hence the price increase, which is fine by me. I was just a bit disappointed at the fact that she didn’t admit to take the phone call or offer any apology. Overall the food experience is ok, however there is definitely room for improvement in their customer service and staff training.

Nice and friendly vibe, the garden at the back is cosy, great for a big group gathering.

The price is affordable with the food coming in a generous portion. The pesto pasta I had was nice and rich, but a little bit oily.

We also shared a dessert pizza and it was a lovely conclusion to an overall satisfactory meal!
Everything tasted decent, considering the price we were paying, I'd be happy to return every now and then. Great service as well.

Last night I ordered pizzas from here.My daughter found a long hair on one piece. She was very hungry so said I'll let it go this time but then she found two more hairs and a piece of fluff on the next piece. What sort of place is this?Do they not cover their hair during food prep. or had some ingredient fallen to the floor and been put back on?Disgusting. We will never order from here again!

Came here for my birthday and was pleasantly surprised with the service. The waiters were efficient and had a great sense of humour. I was taken to the back of the restaurant, which was very suitable for larger groups. The decor was nice, as was the food. Would recommend to anyone looking for reasonably priced pizza and pasta.

Four of us went there for dinner last night. Two had different pasta dishes (the penne marinara and the linguini brasciola) and two had Mediterranean dishes (the salad menu and the schewarma). Everything was excellent! The marinara was amazing. You could tell the sauce was homemade and slow cooked to let the flavors develop over hours of cooking. We were very impressed and can't wait to go back!

They may not serve the best pizzas in town but they definitely provide the best value for money dining option in my neighborhood. The pizzas and garlic bread are fresh and warm, the staff is very friendly and we liked the ambiance in the backyard. The kind of place where you can have a meal every fortnight.

Lovely little place - nice food and good service at reasonable prices. Enjoyed sitting out in the back in the open. Pizzas were good and they have sown Egyptian options as well

There are so many great pizza and pasta restaurants in Sydney. Unfortunately this is not one of them.

Gluten free pizza: I was told when placing order that the gluten free base was made in-store. So decided to try gluten free pizza. The topping was nothing to rave about.
Upon paying the bill I was charged $5 for a "bought-in base" - no, not made in-store. You can liken the pizza to a McCains pizza from your childhood.
Prawn risotto, average.
The herb dressing over powered the taste of the salad.
For the price, I would recommend eating elsewhere.

Marinara really really good! Pasta dough is also above average standard. An excellent alternative for non-Chinese dining options in Burwood!

Had a great time here! Service was 10/10 and the food was pretty bomb, loved the mykonos pizza + the size of the risotto was massive. will def come again

Ladies night at base and bowl was a delicious treat. The bread was warm and freshly baked. Pastas were flavourful with homemade sauces and hearty portions and pizza was crispy and has full toppings. Would definitely recommend this restaurant!

Went to Base & Bowl with a voucher and the food was really great. It's a shame that the restaurant is so quiet but it's because it's in on the quiet end of Burwood Rd. The dips with bread was really nice as the bread was hot and really fresh. The pizza was quite nice as well. Happy with the service too!

The best Italian pizza and I loved the flat bread myself and my friends we had a very nice meal and the staff were all very welcomed and the restaurant enviroment is very nice

This place is honestly excellent!!! Its not well known so its never too crowded and it has a secret back section where they occasionally play live acoustic music. The food here is great! Massive servings of pasta, and plenty of flavor. I have been here multiple times and am never disappointed by the food. Im a difficult customer always trying to change around the dish to my liking and the staff are very accommodating to me. Its so good i even forgot to take a photo before we started eating!! Only downside is no table service but its not that big of an issue. Will always choose this place for a quick filling and tasty meal when no one in my house wants to cook dinner! Can't wait to try the desserts they look amazing aswell!

A lovely little Italian with yummy pizza, not crazy portion sizes (quality not quantity!), reasonable wait time for food, and excellent prices. For a small gourmet pizza & a can of soft drink it was just $19! I'll definitely be coming back.

Make sure you try to sit in the little yard/garden area out the back. It's really cute with 'grape vines' in the eaves and simple but nice decoration.

Best Food On Burwood Road. This place for me and my girlfriend is the only restaurant on burwood road that actually serves food that taste good
everywhere else you go weather it be Georges cafe or La plaka across the street
it does't have the same vibe as this place with the little outdoor seating area in the back
its a really good feel there

now some peoples reviews on this place are a tad harsh saying its not authentic food..
now as an Italian ive been brought up where all i ate was my Nonnas and mammas pasta!
so as someone who has been eating actual authentic Italian food for my whole life its easy to compare it to a restaurant with Italian cuisine

i ordered the bolognese and my girlfriend had the Gnocchi and both where scrumptious ;) we shared a pizza and the pizza was bloody delicious i dont know how people are giving it bad reviews

we decided wed get the nutella calzone for dessert but the mains where filling! very satisfying

defiantly will be returning.

A tale of 2 stories

I love the food, great! I was impressed with the pizza and pasta
There is a back area and I think a upstairs area but don't quote me on it

I like the ambience here too, modern and funky,

The bad, despite only another group being at the back,it took AGES for the food to come out,30-45 mins wait. If they were busy I would be scared!

Despite liking the ambience I found the front section really squishy,if it was full, it'll be like sardines

Though liking the food I won't be back I can't wait that long for food

Spaghetti Bolognese. Amazing.

-----02 Oct, 2014-----

Best Spaghetti Bolognese I've Ever Eaten.. I ordered 2 of the spaghetti bolognese online for dinner, and they came in a nice plastic bowl. It was also the best tasting bolognese I've ever eaten in my entire life, by far. I'm excited to go into the restaurant now and try their other foods now.

Worth the walk from the Cinema. Food generous and good. Walked up from the cinema and was happy to find a cute little Italian restaurant amongst all the Asian offerings. Great and friendly service even after 9 pm. Nice courtyard at the back for relaxed and group dining.
Home made Ravioli really good, large serve which unfortunately left no room left for dessert! Would go back. Pizza looked good too.

Mediocre. In one sense I admire Base & Bowl for trying to create a funky Italian experience in a heavily Asian-dominated food scene in Burwood.

But, the problem is that like the dozens of average to mediocre Chinese restaurants along this strip, Base & Bowl is an equally average to mediocre Italian experience.

Firstly, the pizzas are below average, no better than what you'd get from the likes of commercial takeaway pizza chains. The base tastes essentially like cardboard and has no flavour, definitely not authentic Italian. The quality of the mozzarella is just as bad. The strategy seems to be to lather the pizza in the stuff, which would be fine if the mozzarella was actually any good.

I had the Poco Prosciutto and you would be hard pressed to find any actual prosciutto, artichoke, goats cheese or sundried tomato on it. It came out covered in mozzarella and not much else.

Then there was the caprese salad. This is a traditional yet simple Italian dish to get right. But the balsamic reduction used to dress it was burnt, and tasted very bitter. Completely put me off the dish.

I didn't have very high expectations of this place other than for the fact that it was something different to try rather than more of the same. Half their problems would be solved by using some better quality ingredients and learning how to make proper impasto (dough).

I really wish this place was better than I experienced because Burwood is crying out for a decent Italian pizzeria.

Amazing fit out and cool place. Really surprised to find this gem in Burwood. Had the pizza which was so tasty and the base was great. The spaghetti was delicious. The staff were also very bubbly and attentive
Honest Sydney
Pizza - Quattro Formaggi. Whist they were happy to accommodate for an order that was not on the menu, it's absurd that this is what a $16 'quattro formaggi' is from Base and Bowl. Surely they could have even looked up the recipe after I specified the cheese ?

In case the picture isn't clear enough, they have sectioned the pizza into four different cheese quadrants ..
