Review Asia Joe's - Byron Bay

Catriona McNaughton
I love tacos and this place had the best taco I have ever had. Great friendly service and food you can tell is made with love and care. We were only in Byron a couple of nights and it was good enough that we tried to go back the next night (shut unfortunately). Will be my first stop whenever I'm back. Soooo good.

Great Mexican food in an alleyway off the main strip in Byron. Good customer service, fresh + delicious food and loved the margaritas.
Brett Mason-Woods
Best Mexican in the country. We went 2 nights in a row. It’s not cheap, but the food is well worth the price. We had the beef tacos, spicy chicken tacos, char grilled chicken quesadilla and trio of dips with corn chips. Everything was fresh and tasted amazing. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We went right on 5pm for happy hour. Highly recommend giving it a try.

Absolutely awesome staff, even helped me with my butchering of the Spanish language!! A wicked cocktail and mouth watering food... An absolute must if your looking for a great feed!!!

We stumbled across this place on our way back to our accomodation and I’m so glad we did- it was a highlight of our short time in Bryon. Over a week later and I’m still thinking about the spicy margaritas, they were that good (and even better being happy hour!). Food was excellent also, highly recommend giving it a try.
Linda Hammill
Great fresh Food, drinks and service by a lovely friendly waitress. So good not to have to order and collect food at a counter. Had the happy hour $10 Margaritas- perfection ! No skimping on the alcohol here. Dog friendly too, a plus for us travelling with fur baby.
Anuj Timblo
The best Mexican food I’ve had outside North America. The salsa was flavourful, the chicken was perfectly marinated and grilled, the margaritas took me back to mexical days, and the jalapeño poppers & eloté were perfect. The service was quick and flexible too! Wish I could be back here sooner than my next trip to Byron Bay.
Kevin L
Super cool vibe, with an extensive tequila and drinks menu and authentic Mexican flavours! So fantastic to have people actually from the culture serving and cooking! The birria tacos were rich and the consommé was just spot on! The pollo picante tacos had a nice spicy kick, not overpowering at all but rather greatly complimenting the tender and juicy chicken. Washed down with two Arette tequilas, we left VERY happy and plan to return again whilst in Byron!

We love Asia Joe's. They have a great menu, the food is always good, the service is quick and efficient and you can take a bottle of wine and the corkage is only $1.50 per person. You can even take your own beer without charge. They don't take reservations but it's usually a short wait for a table, even in the summer. It's our favourite place to eat in Byron.
Zoe Howarth
Me and my boyfriend eat a lot of Asian food and we hands down just said that was the best Asian meal we have had! So yummy and service is great!! We went for chicken satay and the special coconut and lemongrass dish with prawns! Epic
Sandra Hughes
We have eaten at Asia Joes a few times and always find the food fantastic and very well priced It's a must when we visit Byron 😁
Joshua Dobbie
Hands down most disappointing pad Thai ever ! Tasted more like a flat carbonara than an Asian dish ! Props for offering a point of difference on this popular dish ! but unfortunately for me you guys missed the mark entirely .
Sam Cox
I highly recommend this place! The food is always delicious and fresh, prices are perfect, staff are speedy and friendly it ticks all the boxes. My personal favourite is the yellow curry which I have have multiple times.
Anna Goodman
I had the best Nasi Goreng ever just hit the spot the prawns where fresh spices just right and portion exceeded expectation
Angie Curr
Great friendly service, awesome authentic flavours and no charge for opening our BYO beer!
James Messner
I tried two dishes and they were the best I've ever had. Can't wait to try the rest!
Marina Robinson
Amazingly fresh produce used in our meals, would recommend any day of the week! Thank you Asia Joes
Lloyd Jones
Good food for a good price. Recommended for a healthy lunch or dinner.
Melanie Neumann
Not our first visit and it definitely won’t be our last. Great food every time.
Nikki Williamson
Been coming to byron for 18 years cannot help but come here more than once per trip, amazingly tasty, fresh food and wonderful service
Jame-i Meurant
Absolutely amazing authentic flavours and just bloody tasty - Thank you for preparing a lovey meal Asia Joes crew!
Stephanie Curtis
One of our favourites when in Byron. Always the best meal..... love love love the coconut and lemongrass curry!
Tim Heasman
Great little asian restaurant in heart of Byron Bay. Fabulous food and service....well priced.
Maggie
Not authentic, expensive, poor taste
Orderd the pad thai, nasi goreng and chicken satay skewers. The chicken was pretty good but the mains were horrible (if I’m being honest) and the worst thai meal I’ve ever tasted.

Pad Thai lacked flavour and was bland. The ingredients were not ones you’d find in an authentic pad thai (broccoli, zucchini and cabbage???). The noodles are actually pho noodles that were dry. Overall, I didnt even finish the dish because it was THAT bad.
Nasi goreng was way too sweet. The flavours just didnt balance and the same vegetables were used. Such a disappointing visit and three dishes cost us $56! Rip off

their vegan yellow coconut pumpkin curry with tofu is
to die for 😍👌staff were so friendly and the restaurant had a great atmosphere. one of the best Asian places I've eaten at outside of Asia
Kristy
Food was nice, my partner loved his soup. Such a Busy place with people lining up.
Found the service a little poor as it was a packed restaurant with people waiting for tables and only 1-2 waitresses. When we asked for water we were told to get ourselves which I think for a dine in restaurant with decent priced food, having water in the table is a given. When ordering the line was so large that if your going out for tea just the 2 of you then the other person is left sitting at the table for quite sometime.
Overall though a good experience, Would give the food a 4 Star, service a 3.
Amysyder
Good food, friendly and quick service, decently priced meals providing good portion sizes. I ordered the roasted cashew, ginger and vegetable stir fry with tofu. It was in the special board as one of the top meals. It was very tasty and the flavours balanced well, however the flavours could have been stronger. Other than that a great place for dinner.

Asia Joes offers cheap and fast Asian fairs.

We had the Nasi Goreng with Chicken and Crunchy Salads with Deep Fried Calamari. Both fresh but average tasting.

The Nasi Goreng is probably too sweet for Asian taste while the crumbed calamari was crunchy and tender, their flavours do not inspire a return visit.
Littleguy11
Fast service, great atmosphere and location, very yummy food that is super fresh and tasty. Couldn't fault anything. We ordered satay sticks, salt and pepper squid, Mee Goreng and Thai salad with crispy fish, then a kids serve of spring rolls. Highly recommend.
Joel
Good quality Asian cuisine tucked away in Bay Lane. From what we ordered, the Nasi Goreng was the pick of the bunch. It is also BYO which is an added bonus!
IJBP
Had to wait quite a while for a table but staff were lovely and accomodating. Had a little mix up with our entrees but it was resolved and it was all worth it as the food was delicious. Vegetarian meals all round with a highlight being the pumpkin and mushroom. Would definitely recommend eating here !
Monica Rose
Had Asian Joes on our first night in Byron.
Food came out quickly and was delicious!! We had the salt and pepper calamari, tofu San choy bao and chicken pad Thai. All were fresh and full of flavour. Also I'm pretty sure can BYO alcohol here. Good price for quality and serving size. Recommend!
Xiaoniaolike
Service is good.

The price is ok in Byron Bay. But the rice shock me. My husband order another rice which costs $4.5. Wa o!

The dishes are ok except Laksa. Barely see noodles, only soup and vegs.
Netkith
Cheapest and best food.
FOOD: excellent food, vegetarian and vegan options, good variety of fresh, stir fried, and curries.
SERVICE: friendly and quick.
AMBIENCE: decent and cosy. Well maintained.
LOCATION: off a busy street, no views.

VEGANS BEWARE. After visiting Asia Joe's numerous times on my Byron trip, I have exceptionally mixed feelings. On one hand it was an excellent perfect holiday destination- filling, delicious and, most importantly, cheap! The food was delectable and very good value for money. However, my experiences with the staff were downright appalling. I requested extra sides of tofu during each trip, to which I received looks of downright disdain and disgust from the waitresses. The same waitress served me each time and decided to up the price of the tofu from $2 to $3 then $4! On my third trip the chef even came out and said 'seriously, you want two sides of steamed tofu?' condescendingly mocking my order. It made me never want to go back. Good food but clearly not a friendly place for vegans.
Jessica
Fantastic little place in a lane way. Quick food that tastes fresh and full of flavour! Fun atmosphere and I must commend the music, great taste!
HurryDaFoodup
I like the concept but the flavours are off. We ordered the laksa and it it was more of a curry than a soup. We also went with the Szechuan pork ribs which left much to be desired.
Sorry guys this doesn't taste authentic enough.
Helen Stack
I am truly impressed with Asia Joe's nasi goreng. As an Indonesian, I can assure you their nasi goreng is 95% authentic. Initially, I was reluctant to order their nasi goreng as I saw no Asian chef in their kitchen but hey, if I didn't see their kitchen staff, I would think I got the same quality nasi goreng as I am in Indonesia. Thank you for great cooking and keep up the good work.

We waited awhile to get a table, as the shop is small & were already full. However we waited & the food was nice. A little pricey for what it was, not a lot of meat in the servings.
Ricky Zinn
Cheap and nasty. Probably highly rated because it is pretty low cost. Though, it wasn't actually that cheap.
Cashew ginger chicken, tom yup soup and sweet and sour chicken. No flavour. Too much rice.
Slow Eater Peter
Typically you would go for a Massaman beef, Green/Red chicken curry or something similar to asess an asian restuarant like this, and Asia Joe's certainly do a great job of these staples.

However, the absolute standout meal for me was the Sechuan Pork Ribs w/ lime salad (on specials menu).
Falling off the bone pork ribs, incredible salad and dressing, topped off with zesty lime. One of the best meals I had in Byron.
We come to Byron often but have never been here. We though it was a big place but as it turned out, it was two different restaurants. We got there early as every time we have gone past, it's been pretty busy. It's very small and the tables are small also, doesn't really accomodate for shared eating although we made it work well. It would have been better to eat outside but it's very squishy. It's not table service which was frustrating as given it is so small, it's very awkward for customers to get up and down. The service was good and the waiters were very happy and nice. We ordered the Nasi guorang which was incredible, the best we've ever had. We also ordered satay and curry puffs which were very delicious too. In addition we got a beef stir fry which was brilliant. We had the best curry we've ever had being the chicken lemongrass- this is the best Asian dish we've ever had it was absolutely incredible. We had a fantastic meal. Wish they got some new tables and re-organised the interior and exterior so there was more space to move around and I think it should be table service too. But it was a great experience and just the most incredible food. Highly recommend and will be returning
Sarah Elizabeth
Loved this little place during a recent visit! Yes it's small but the atmosphere is great and the service is fantastic. We enjoyed the deluxe tasting plate which had the most delicious chicken sang choi bau as well as a few different mains which were all equally as tasty.
Freakstorm4
The food is fantastic, tasty, fresh.
All the options are great.
The venue is a bit loud and crowded, but you get used to it.
Definitely worth trying.

HEALTHY FOOD Options
Love the Lemongrass Coconut dish, normally have it with Chicken
Enjoyed a really simple meal and asked for GF, Vegan and Chilli free and they where happy to do so.
Can get busy and no bookings but it's worth the wait
SpicyVegie
Not ideal seating, seems they put a few too many tables that leave you sitting on top of each other in the outdoor area. Anyway since everywhere is busy and the menu looks good we decide to cram in.
Ordered the spring rolls for entree. 3 generous spring rolls that weren't dry and we nice and crispy.
Main was the nasi goreng with beef and prawns and the Thai style. Both generous serves definitely good value for money.
The Thai style was nice but a bit dry, seemed to lose flavour as the meal went on. Good mixture of veggies in there though. No complaints on the nasi goreng. Good amount of meat and prawns, plenty of sauce and flavour right till the end.
Would recommend again but not the best in the area.
Jade Rose
Yummy food, satay and masuman curry was delish. Sat outside as no seats inside and could not have alcohol as they had no licence. Service was so so not the best but worth it for the food.
Alicia
Quite delicious food and a casual, laid back vibe. However, the surly waitress serving us, and taking our order, killed the mood somewhat. Perhaps it was a language barrier but we didn't feel that welcome whilst placing our order. It was as if she would rather be somewhere else. Try the chicken, lime and lemongrass curry. You definitely won't be disappointed. Better service given at many other establishments in Byron- I'm sure it was just a once-off

I've now had one too many average meals at Asia Joe's and am unlikely to return. I've been coming for years, giving it another chance, but today was the end. What happened to you Asia Joe's? There's NO sign of 'love in the wok' as your walls declare. The authenticity of ingredients and flavours has vanished and the surroundings need a good clean. If you get it together, like the first few years, we'll be back, but for now we'll be going elsewhere. Such a shame.
Anna Sundqvist
Never had a bad curry here. The atmosphere is pleasant and casual, and portions are quite generous too. Wait times during busy periods can sometimes be a bit long, but they let you know in advance if so. The service isn't spectacular but it's still a nice place to go.
Dave Howard
Having to start with cleaning the glasses, even the one I paid to have with corkage wasn't a good start. The experience improved with the Sang Choi Bow and the Thai Salad. Both were fresh and crisp, so fresh that the lettuce still had dirt in it. I think the dish that did us in was the Coconut, Lime and Lemongrass stir fry. Calling it a stir fry was a bit rich as it was more a coconut curry with wiltered Bok Choy. It lacked in flavor and was not impressive. An ice bucket would have been nice and would have softened the blow of going home with warm wine and clenching butt checks. $44 lighter, still hungry and plenty of time spent on the can. Would. Not. Return.
Gastrobitch
A fun, casual BYO eatery with a Thai street food theme that has so much potential but just misses the mark. Unergonomic timber boxes might look cool but do not constitute comfortable seating. The cashier/waitress didn't really seem to want to be there, while she wasn't exactly unpleasant, she didn't do anything to make the experience of dining there particularly friendly or fun. If you live in Byron Bay, there's no excuse not to be a happy person! Service was relatively quick and the satay chicken skewers were tender and flavoursome with the right balance of peanut. Delicious beef massaman curry with good meat texture and spice blend. The crispy snapper was the only dish I tried where I could pick a fault, having an overly 'fishy' taste which dominated over the seasoning and spices, indicating it wasn't fresh fish. And if you're going to charge corkage, don't be too lazy to give us a bucket of ice for the Sauvignon Blanc we brought and make sure your wine glasses are up to scratch and not cloudy. I felt the need to wipe the inside of the glass before pouring the wine, a bit of a no no.
Food 2 Run
Simply amazing the best meal at a great price in BB the chilli crispy beef and noodles the best ever... A must if in Byron Bay..
Juddrose
Went recommended and wasn't dissapointed. Saw it recommended by a Byron Bay chef whilst reading the Jetstar magazine so trusted his judgment. Went for lunch and wasn't disappointed. Only a small place but good atmosphere with cheap food, plenty of options with great flavour. BYO and with a bottle shop right next door makes it an even cheaper option, get on board...
Brittj
Yum!!! Fresh veggies and great flavours! The bikini bowl was perfect
CrazyMelbChick
Did not like it.... Oh dear.... Did not like it....
Oh dear. Its the backpacker interpretation of Asian /Thai food. Flavours were clumsily thrown together, too salty, too sweet, too spicy, lacked any understanding of balance. We were disappointed and left hungry. The service and ambiance was nice and casual... But fod did not deliver. Sorry. Will not be back.
Travellinglulu
Average joes. Had a watery weird tasting curry and a stirfry that had no asian flavour , the serving sizes were small and all this with the bonus of being overpriced and a slack waitress with attitude really topped off the experience..
Sonia
Lots of gluten free options. Delicious and all in group had good things to say. Fresh and quick.
Nicola
Great little busy joint, with a lot of atmosphere. Enjoyed our meals, lots of fresh flavours and ingredients. Could have had more spice and seasoning but a great little local feed.
Fusspot
Very average food & rude service. I love Thai food , have been to Asia & Thailand and eat it very often. This was one of the worst curries I've had and to top it off rude, dismissive service. I honestly don't know why it rates so high ?? With so many other restaurants in Byron Bay including other Thai places, I defintely won't be coming back. It's a real pitty as I really wanted to like this place as has a nice fit out and in a good location etc. I have had better Thai in a food court, and at half the price!
The Speedy Eater
Yum. Quick, friendly, very tasty takeaway. Thumbs up
Sally
Great Food - but better for takeaway!. Asia Joe's is one of our staple takeaway choices when in Byron. The food is really yummy. Also good to eat in during the quieter months - but can get VERY busy and its a very small place. Which is why we stick to takeaway.
Good, clean Asian food. Yummo!
Food Lover
Always consistently good. This place is the epitome of Byron, casual, laid back and an eclectic crowd. Yeah, sometimes you have to wait for a table, and maybe sometimes the service is a little slapdash, but can't ever remember being disappointed in the food. For first timers at Byron, this is a must do.
Em
Enjoyed the food and service was friendly. Good value for money!
Michellebell374
Sang Choi Bau WOW,,,!!!. Simply a must try if you are in Byron.Fantastic

Not Gluten Friendly. We visited Asia Joe's in September holidays after finding this restaurant on the gluten free website, given that I am a coeliac sufferer. We were assured that it was gluten free only to have myself vomiting 2 hrs later. This took at least 58hrs for me to recover and ruined my family holiday to Byron Bay. I would not recommend this restaurant.
Greedygreedyguts
Terrible service. Avoid.
Jockrose
Be warned, Save your money - go else were. Cooks are obviously backpackers but not Asians unfortunately, therefore the food is what you would expect from a bunch wannabe surfers - crap. The couple sitting behind us left after one spoonfull we tried the pad Thai and chilli beef, seriously it is poor quality food & prep
LC
Yummy!. Great value Asian fare!
Pescitary Veg
It was good. We shared the vegetarian appetiser plate. The tofu san choi boy was particularly excellent and the curry puffs and spring rolls were very good as well. I had the yellow curry with snapper, which I really enjoyed. My wife had the vegetarian pad thai, which she said was ok. Our 5 year old had the chicken fried rice which he seemed to enjoy quite a bit. I'd go back for the veg san choi boy alone.
The Waiter
Don't let the size of this place fool you - the food is terrific and well priced but be prepared to wait as its a popular place - had the yellow curry and bikini stir fry both wonderful and full of flavour
Jason
Asia Joes is a great little restaurant. It is cheap and has very nice food. If you are looking for somewhere casual and good food Asia Joes the is place to go.
Chikitadog
Suvega. Have eaten there many times and really enjoy the meals, I just wish you could use a different rice because the plain white one is just empty calories and no nutrition. Even basmati would be a big improvement.
Fransfam
Have eaten here twice in a matter of a few days very tasty and good vibe and value.
Hux
Great value. Couldn't walk past this place - cute decor and delicious smells! The mixed lunch plate was excellent value for money. Will definitely be back to try the pad thai everyone raves about.
Lindsay
Absolutely the BEST pad Thai I've ever had!! I love the BYOB, cute little storefront & the food was amazing! Fast service too!!
Liz
Our fave in Byron, always amazing!!!
Carrie
The best meal I had in Byron Bay. Great service and fresh delicious food!

Nourishing tasty stir fry menu. One of my favourite places to eat in Byron. The menu is inviting and makes choosing a challenge in elimination. Ingredients are superb, and flavour combinations imaginative. It's good value and service is effective but no fuss.
Gareth Symons
Always awesome for takeaway!!!
Rogue Spoon
Disappointing. First time at Asia Joe's. Have always eaten next door.
Gave it a go.
Food was very disappointing. Worst Pad Thai I have ever eaten. Gluggy mess. Nasi Goreng, not as i remember it, was supposed to have had chicken in it. Roasted Cashew, Ginger & Vegetable Stir Fry, again the chicken was missing in action.
For such a popular place it seems incongruous that the meal was so disappointing.
Alister Scott
Not bad. Quite basic but tasty. Prefer orient express
Global Chef
Absolutely loved this place. The location, ambience and decor were all very appealing. The staff were welcoming and professional. We selected the salt and pepper salad plate and crispy chicken on coconut rice with lime and plum sauce from the lunch menu. We loved the fresh flavors and found the serving sizes very generous. To top it off the have no corkage on beer so feel free to grab some from the bottle shop on your way in. Absolutely suited to the area. I look forward to my next trip down to taste other selections from there great menu.
Carlie
Amazing. What can I say? Service was friendly and fast, prices were great (you need to order up at the counter but not a drawback) they have BYO and the food was absolutely amazing. We had the tofu San Choi Bow, the Pad Thai and the Thai Green Curry with coconut rice. We were full long before the food on the table was eaten but our bowls were left empty. Yum!
Mia
Delicious meal, healthy and fresh.
Christine
Best Place in Byron to Eat. I wish we'd found Asia Joe's on our 1st night rather than our last as we would have eaten here every night!!! My daughter had the chicken and prawn Laksa which was delicious with plenty of chicken, prawn and vegetables. I was indecisive as the menu looked great! I finallly settled on the Bikini Bowl with crispy snapper as I needed a vege fix. OMG - it was delicious and just perfect for the person who can't make up their mind. The staff were very friendly. I would definately HIGHLY recommend for a fresh, tasty, light, healthy food.
Beth
Yum yum yum. Great spot in Byron for a casual dinner- the menu is extensive and there is also a specials board- and lot's of options for GF and some for vegans.
BYO so grab a bottle of wine from the bottle shop nearby and settle into this buzzing little restaurant.
Service might be slow but it's all forgiven because of the good prices and tasty food.
The crispy beef was probably one of the most delicious things i've tasted- a must try!
Sometimes hard to get a table but people move in and out fairly quickly.
Dougal
Great food and flavor. Will be back for more
Trudi Sampola
Yum! This is a top little place to eat at with dishes that were full of flavour and serves that were really generous. It is very casual, doesn't take bookings but has that cruisy Byron vibe about it. It is BYO so grab drinks before u go there. The food is really reasonable price wise and the ingredients fresh and good quality.
Sonik75
The supposed "legendary laksa" was very basic... Watch the pricing also. This was from 13.50 but was really a min of 16.50 if you wanted anything but coconut milk
Macca
A Rare Find. For a taste of Asia in Byron Bay you won't be disappointed to eat here, located at the rear of the Beach Hotel you'll enjoy freshly cooked thai styled foods..the green curry with crispy snapper is worth a drive from Melb........
Sirlunchalot
Good food great service. With a group of 10 guys and no booking these guys were great.accomodated us 2 nights in a row good food BYO was a bonus (bottle shop round the corner) Staff were great. Go there!
Ali
...the variety of vegies in the Laksa was great and there was lots of chicken and prawn...
Eating Brisbane
I love Byron Bay and head there every chance I get whether Summer or Winter. Part of the appeal is that I do not have to think about where I am going or what I am going to do. I just switch off, go into Byron Bay mode and into my favourite haunts. One of
