Review Fishmongers Byron Bay - Byron Bay

Farhan Riyaz
Fresh fish and yummy food at Fishmongers. Had a Grilled fish with Brown rice and Fish Tacos. The fish was super fresh and tasted good with the brown rice. Tacos was yummy as well. Would definitely eat here again.

Honestly, the best fish and chips I have ever tried. I loved it so much I returned before leaving Byron! First time we got a box for 2. The batter was thin and crispy, the grilled fish was super tasty. The oysters were wonderful, and prawns very gentle and full of flavour. They also serve real tasting and looking potatoes on the side. Second time it was a delicious super loaded fish wrap, presented beautifully on a wood paddle. Always a great service from the ladies with a friendly smile, and I am loving a slightly tucked away location still a minute from the Main Beach. Will be back each time I am in Byron.

We discovered Fish Mongers - Byron Bay .. down a lane way , off one of the main streets in Byron Bay - Jonson St We were looking for a quiet , sit down restaurant / cafe , for fish & chips .. & all other eateries we visited were over occupied or well over priced The meal prices looked reasonable at Fish Mongers - Byron Bay .. so we decided to check out this establishment Our orders were * Fish & Tempura Vegetables * Chargrilled Baby Octopus & Home Made Chips The meals looked delicious Then the total disappointment started * Firstly the bowls the meals were served in .. made eating difficult - specially for the fish ( the taste of the battered fish was ok ) * The lightly tempura vegetables , were well undercooked .. we couldn’t stomach to many * The Chargrilled Baby Octopus , were nicely tender .. however the sauce was way way to salty - I went through a small bottle of water , whilst eating the octopus & then a can of coke * The thick chip were also undercooked & had to much salt .. I was unable to finish half the chip We will surely not return to Fish Mongers - Byron Bay .. as the meals weren’t value for money - as we didn’t eat all our menu orders Nevertheless .. Fish Mongers - Byron Bay was a cosy & a quiet location

We had a byron bay box here. It came with a few calamari, hoki fish and chips with lemon. The grilled fish was delicious. The ambience is good few indoor and few outdoor seating. Friendly staff.. Highly recommended to fish mongers 😁

What an amazing food we had! Maybe the best fish & chips ever!

Just had the fish tacos - SO GOOD! $21 was a reasonable price too so I’m impressed by that. Fresh, really yummy, nice service, food came really quickly. Highly recommend. Don’t pass it by if you’re a fish lover.

Easily the best fish I have had in a long time. Staff was very helpful in recommending dishes & always ensured we have everything we need. Would highly recommend!

I love this place as they make great seafood. I went back there after 7 years, the food was great needs some improvement in particular the calamari was a bit tough. I think the prices are a bit steep. The owner has been running the store for 21 years now. He’s a lovely guy and very friendly with the customers. It’s just that now I am writing the review I feel like I should have mentioned the calamari rings were tough. I really liked the grilled fish and grilled prawns the spices and flavour was amazing.

Service was very friendly. Seafood was fresh but was average fish and chips. All the dishes were served in a bowl which was very hard to eat when you want to cut. Home made chips were like fat wedges which were a bit dry. Salad was very simple lettuce tomato and cucumber with a strip of corn, nothing special. It was quite overpriced for what it was.

Worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. I ordered the kingfish with a side of tempura vegetables. The food was served in a square bowl which was difficult to eat from and did not look appetising at all. Fish did not taste fresh. Also did not appreciate the terrible service. The person at the cashier was not welcoming and had a scowl on his face the whole time. Overall, not worth the money or the meal.
Sonia.bonnici
Just ok. Service was fine however food wasn’t fresh, especially the calamari. Everything except the corn and rice was deep fried. Tempura not great. Didn’t like. Overpriced.
Kirra
A great little fish and chippers with quick service! They offer some healthy options with grilled fresh fishes and brown rice for the little ones which was great! Their kingifiah and other fish caught daily were also great.

We’ve always been a fan of this place in Bondi, Sydney and this store is just as good. You can’t go past the tempura vegetables with some lovely grilled fish or salmon.
You Had Me At Haloumi
Ordered the pack for two. Probably the most gourmet fish and chips I’ve had with 2 large deep fried king prawns, a couple of fresh oysters, hand cut chunky chips, the usual battered or grilled fish and calamari sprinkled with sweet potato shavings. Visually very appealing. So not only was this the most gourmet fish and chips but it was also the most expensive fish and chips I’ve paid for. $44!! Thank god im not a local as I’d hate to be paying this much every time I had cravings for fish and chips.

Came here in hope of fresh and nice seafood, sadly got disappointment.
The oysters were minuscule, almost dried out and way too expensive. The fish of the day (barramundi) was ok, the corn tiny. The presentation was not appealing as they serve their food in a black bowl. The place is just overpriced for what they serve.

Most amazing barramundi, well cooked and delicious. Ordered takeaway over the phone and was told they could have it ready in 15 minutes and they were spot on. We go to Fish Mongers every summer when we come to Byron.
CK
Came here instead of fish heads which we were advised was over priced and average. We were seated by a lovely lady and her customer service was spot on. Don’t love the way the share pack for two was presented as it means your trying to dig into a bowl for your food and it’s a bit annoying. Food was ok. I think they were super busy given the peak season and the quality perhaps slipped a bit but it was still good and we enjoyed it.

I have had a lot of fish and chips throughout my life, some good, some bad, but this has to be the worst. If the food was alright then you could slightly get over the fact it cost an arm and leg but it wasn’t alright, it was shit. That is all.
Jalena
Great value for money. Purchased the “for 4” share box and barely managed to finish it with my family of 4. Absolutely delicious! Great to have a fish and chip shop were the potato cakes, chips and fish are NOT predominantly batter! Highly recommend!!!

Really fab food - fresh, tasty and relatively quick! Both the battered fish and grilled prawns were perfect portion size. Would defo go back!
Wandered down Bay Lane and came across Fishmongers. It’s small but neat, clean and inviting.
Seafood menu with lots of fresh options.
You can dine in - self serve cutlery, low key no fuss. Or takeaway.
Order and pay at the counter.
Friendly efficient service. Food fresh and cooked to order.
Music playing in the background....providing chilled ambience.
My calamari were fresh and the hand cut chips absolutely delicious!
I was there late afternoon mid week, it was quiet and very relaxed. Loved it.

My take-home was less than memorable, I understand that it's been a really busy Easter weekend however it's inexcusable not to change your oil & serve chips & potato cakes that you couldn't eat Shame on you for taking advantage of your tourists.

Fish mongers was one of those places you'd go for better and relatively cheaper fish & chips. We came here because we thought the nearby restaurant Fish Heads was a bit pricey (but in the end concluded that while it was pricier, the fish & chips were still better). We ordered the 4 people sharing bowl, and there was a lot to go around so the portion was big! But the fish wasn't as fresh as I thought it would be and the batter was really thick. Having said that, the sweet potato crisps and chips were yummy. There was also nothing to shout about the snapper.
Mrs Foodie
Fresh ingredients salad with fresh fish.
Very busy restaurant but staff were easy to talk to and order took about 20mins. Salad even had sweet potato crisp
Tardar Sauce
$44 'for two pack' came with 2 pieces of fish, 4 calamari, 2 prawns and 2 potato cakes - all fried + chips. The tap water tasted of chlorine and the bowls were square with high sides so it was interesting trying to cut the fish having cutlery on nothing less than a 50 degree angle. Staff were friendly and it's fun to sit outside and watch all the tourists go by.

Food was tasty but a little oily
Took ages (20mins) to get Tempura Veg and grilled Snapper
Very pricey for the quality of the food and service
Fishmonger's prices appeared expensive at first but when I tasted the food I understood why. For 44.00 we ordered a 'lunch for two'. On delivery the MASSIVE bowl was loaded with the freshest, juicy seafood. Beautifully battered, nice and golden. The fish was juicy, the squid tender, the prawns still had a great bite to them. There were even fresh oysters (in shell) in the bowl. Chips were outstandingly crunchy. The salad was also fresh and crisp. You get more than you can eat, and the food is the highest quality. All food = yum. Next time I'm in Byron, I'll definitely drop in again.

Best seafood ever - I had the barramundi on rice and no regrets! Great bang for your buck and awesome for lunch and/or dinner! Take your meals to the beach and enjoy!
Emily
Had the Byron Box - mix of calamari and tempura battered fish with chips. It was loaded - couldn't even finish! The fish was so soft and juicy! Would recommend!
Brendan
Overall, nice seafood, reasonably priced, good service.

We had the seafood basket for 2. The fish was cooked perfectly, the prawns were delicious, the calamari was cooked well and the oysters were nice.

If eating in, the seafood basket comes in a large bowl, which was great, however I didn't like the bowls they gave us to eat from, plates would definitely be better.

Terrible fish & chips on Good Friday... Fish was bland and overcooked. Chips were soggy, floppy, uncooked, unseasoned (ZERO SALT!!!!), not crispy and greasy. What added to our frustration was that the counter lady took down the incorrect order.
Hannah Bayley
Menu was a little confusing, My friend and I ordered just a basic fish and chips they wouldn't let us pay separately. Food came out in bowls which was a little unusual and inconvenient for fish and chips. Price was decent compared to some of the other fish and chip restaurants.

This place is an amazing place for lunch or dinner every day - get down to eat it.

Look for the awesome bowls to eat on the wall - that's where the action is.

Dishes such as Snapper with chilli and lime marinade, salmon encrusted with black and white sesame really top the menu off alongside with barramundi with a macadamia and almond crust. Delicious.

Grab some beers or a bottle of wine at the beachy and settle in and enjoy yourself after ordering at the counter.

Hidden in the backstreet Bay Ln, fishmongers is a great, healthy joint to go to, especially with a family. We got there and it was packed, and so our order wasn't exactly speedy quick but still an acceptable waiting time. I ordered the grilled Hoki fillet with salad, corn and pesto at a modest price of $15.8. The reason this price was so reasonable was because the salad was so fresh, crispy leaves and ingridients and the fillet was flaky, fresh and tasty. Staff were also very smiley and welcoming. All in all very clean food, and I really liked the corn on top. One problem would probably be that it's pretty loud in there so the acoustics aren't exactly great, but nonetheless a great place for a healthy, cheap feed.

We went to this restaurant whenever we went to Byron Bay. It's a tiny eatery. There were constant people coming to dine in and takeaway.
The serving size was quite generous. We ordered 1/2 family pack which could definitely fed the four of us!!! The seafood was fresh except the oysters and the chips were very yummy!
Michael Refalo
Fish, prawns, calamari all cooked perfectly! Grungy facade makes for a cool environment! Suppose this place would sit somewhere between your local fish n chip store & a more refined seafood establishment.
Mari

Hunger consumed us. We had seafood on our minds. We made straight to fish heads by the beach, however the empty shop made for a Mexican stand off style between us and the restauranteur, and ultimately to our quick departure.

Our urban spoon search then sent us down the nearby street housing Il buco, only to be met with a dark menu board offering little appeal. The group hunger was turning into hangry individuals, so we turned a step towards the sign of Mediterranean seafood feast, only to be met with a closed door on Tuesday's. With thai Lucy looking like a long wait, our only other foreseeable option came in the form of Mongers.....a self proclaimed gourmet fish and chip restaurant.

Our building hunger had reached a point where we made the cardinal error of going against the multiple poor reviews of said Mongers.

Once in and seated, we looked over the complicated menu and chose our king prawn, calamari and octopus dishes all with accompanying special signature salads, along with a large serve of hand cut chips to share.

Now to the disappointing time of the evening..... Upon delivery of our respective dishes we immediately felt that the required selling of our shoes to pay for the $70 'gourmet feast' had been a mistake.

My king prawns were clearly of the junior school variety, at least half a lifetime away from king status, with all 5 of them struggling to fill a size 0 runway model on a Hollywood fad diet after having downed a burger and fries.

My friends calamari dish resembled some cut off sections of rubber bands with a loose pair of strangely herbed pyjamas slipping off them as they sat up in their bed of tasteless signature salad bed.

My other friends octopus dish made her remember the salty origin of her 8 legged friends, whilst our hand cut chips were covered in so much oil they most likely made any nearby sardines jealous.

Now I have always believed in a fair and reasonable manner of reviewing any type of service or product, so I must ensure i add the positives of the evening. Upon delivery of the large serve of oil laden and artery hardening chips we enquired about some sauce, which we were told cost extra. I'm not sure if it was the look of shock on our side or the feeling of guilt for making us hand over half our holidays savings, however we were given 2 serves of sauce. The other positive was the delicious serving of refreshingly cold water we were able to wash down our order of Mongers food with. Next time @we won't make the mistake of ignoring the people power of urban spoon.

Love this place. Nothing better than a piece of fresh fish cooked to perfection. Served with your choice of salad and topped with grilled corn.
BEST FOR: Healthy meal
Sonia
Great to grab as take away and watch surfers at sunset. The Cajan barramundi was delicious. Husband like good old battered fish and chips. Didn't get the heavy oily after fish and chips effect. Bit pricey but so is everything in Byron.

Tasty healthy seafood. Not much to look at down a lane way, however really tasty grilled fish with a nice big salad. Grab it takes away and eat on the beach at sunset. Perfect!
Nicola
Fantastic little fish and chip shop! We had excellent service, and the meals were so fresh and flavoursome. It was evident the seafood was fresh and the menu was great, a bit different to the usual 'fish and chips'. We would definitely return.

Grilled Baramundi. Best grilled barramundi ever love love love it

Waste of time and money. First the service was minimal. Food arrived in bowls? Not to sure how you are meant to eat vegetable and fish without everything falling apart. Waste of $50

Great, fresh food!. Lovely fresh seafood with some good healthy options. Bring your appetite though, as they're pretty generous servings!

Always Fresh, Always Varied, Always Yummy. No doubt the best seafood restaurant in the region, I literally came here every week for at least 20 weeks straight while working in Mullumbimby.

Come here if you want the freshest barra, salmon, snapper, and other fishes.
CB
Had the barra with macadamia crust, salad, corn & pesto. It came out quickly & was aaaaaamazing!!! Wanted a handful of their handcut chips but it didn't come with what I selected. Very happy with the meal. Fresh & clean.
Andrew
Average at best. Had grilled snapper and chips - snapper ok but chips were overcooked and soggy. My wife had salt and pepper calamari which was very ordinary and we ordered a kids calamari and chips for my daughter - calamari was terrible and chips overcooked and soggy.
Have been to this place a few times before and it has always been good but maybe it has changed hands since then.

Amazing fish and chips!! If you don't like it, you must be a fussy bugger!

This is one of the worst cases of bad customer service I have ever experienced. After ordering a half dozen oysters to my table, they proceeded to bring out a dozen. Confused, my table questioned the amount, and said we had ordered a half dozen. When the server walked away I assumed that I had payed the extra amount for the dozen. As our table was eating the server returned and accused me of saying I had ordered a dozen and only payed for half, I repeated that I had said 'half dozen'. He rudely replied "no you didn't" walked away furious, returned and said "no you didn't" to further emphasise his point. Being accused of lying after a server error was not a pleasant experience to have while eating with friends. I was absolutely astounded by how rude they could be to customers, and left with a bad taste in my mouth. As for the food and prices, neither made for an impressive meal.
GT
Food overrated. Service unfriendly. Have to pay for sauce - in a sit down restaurant - really?!?! Would it cost you much to provide a variety of sauces free of charge? Staff allowed smoking undercover around food. Wouldn't recommend this place and wouldn't return.
Alister Scott
Awesome fish and chips - consistently good. The half family box feeds our family.
FoodAddict
Over-priced, average food. Ordered the red snapper with lemon & herb crust & chips, pretty average food for the price charged ($19.00). Positives were the location was good & the service was efficient, I won't be going back though.

Gourmet fish n chips. I had the salt & pepper king prawns with tempura vegies and soy dipping sauce, it was delicious! the meals sound expensive for fish n chips, but if you got these meals in a restaurant you would be getting a bargain! Very generous serves, absolutely loved the tempura veg – there was at least 6 or 7 different types of vegies. My partner had the mongers box – i stole a couple of his handcut chips with tartare sauce, so good!
Cs
So so, the oysters were fresh but not really a fan of just the hinge being severed and the oyster still closed. Barramundi was ok, not spectacular and a bit soft and the tempura very very oily and not light, dipping sauce for the tempura so so. Not unpleasant but staring at the back of the ocean beach hotel is pretty average.

To see the chef smell each oyster he opened was a bit disturbing ( the ones we ordered ) my fish was juicy and tasty but burnt on one side. When I asked the Irish ? Girl for a small tub of sauce that was supposed to be with the meal ,.she told me it was in the bowl ! It wasn't . After being advised to look again and her looking into my bowl she reluctantly got me a sauce.
Is it hard to train staff to be efficient , pleasant and friendly ?
Roberto
Fast, excellent tempura batter.

Half family pack between two. More than enough for 37.5$

We had take away fish and chips last night and although pricy the serve was generous as well as delicious. Only waited 15 min for order.
Gillian Dobson
Delicious fish and chips! The calamari is delish. They have some fantastic dishes that are a but different - eg you can have your tempura fish with rice and yummy soy dipping sauce. Highly recommend for fish and chips with a difference!

Excellent!

Great food but don't believe the waitress when she says it won't be long have been waiting 45 min for a takeaway still not here!!

2009 was awesome.....2012 SERIOUSLY DISAPPOINTED

Great fish and chips. Great family meal with chunky chips, dipping sauces, all in a big box with the seafood and fish. Kids loved it, we loved it. Great service: we ate in but would equally take away.

Yum!. A nice little find on a lively strip behind the Beach Hotel. I had the battered fish with a lovely salad of greens and crusty sweet potato curls. The funny-shaped bowl was a challenge but the food didn't disappoint.
Chiipmunk
The 1/2 Family pack for 2 was delicious! Especially the sweet potato flakes.
Carli Mathiesen
Possibly the most amazing fish and salad I've ever had from a fish and chip shop! Love th sweet potato curls om nom nom so good :)
Brisbanista
Great fish on regular menu. If you stay away from the specials, which are more expensive then the regular menu, the price is right. Great fish but the chips are more like big hearty pieces of roast potato. The bowls were useless and I would have preferred a plate to eat my snapper on. Takeaway available.

This place could be good but didn't live up to the things we'd heard. Service front of house was tops, but back of house ....10 mins wait we were told for 2 take aways turned into 30 min on s Sunday afternoon 3 pm. The seafood was ok but would try somewhere else next time.

-----02 Aug, 2010-----

This place could be good but didn't live up to the things we'd heard. The food is fresh, service fast, and the servings generous. At first I was a little overwhelmed with the menu but it soon became clear that each main comes with the choice of three or four side options, as in you can get the BBQ octopus with chips or salad or rice etc etc. We ordered grilled pr awns, BBQ octopus with veggie tempura, salt and pepper squi d, and one of the fish of the day with a p ep per crust. I'm a sucker for sauces and loooved their octopus, the tempura is super tasty and full of nice surprises... corn on the cob tempura... Super duper mushroom Tempura - COME ON GUYS! The serves come with loads of chips so we ended up ord
