Review Kouzina - Byron Bay

Fiona Nelson
An Absolute Gem! Kouzina provides a set 3 course menu for $60 per head, including corkage (BYO only)… excellent value! Although dessert is additional, not everyone would want dessert following a substantial meal. The food was plentiful and delicious, the service friendly, and the setting created an authentic experience. I highly recommend a meal at Kouzina!

We were extremely impressed with the hospitality of the owner, Fiby . What a beautiful restaurant, felt like we were in the Mediterranean. A very authentic Grecian experience. The food was plentiful, fresh and delicious. Would eat there every night if I lived in Byron.

*Set menu for $60 with minuscule serving. I am actually saying, very very very minuscule. *We booked for 6pm, and waited for 1.5hour for all 3 (very small) courses to be served. When we pointed that out, the waitress, instead of apologising, was defensive. She said "The charcoal is wet from the storm." I said .. "Maybe let your patrons know before hand see if they are prepared to wait? " She answered "We didn't know that the charcoal was wet." Surely, after a storm the scale of what the Northen Rivers have received in March 2022, a restaurant that uses BBQ for their "set menus only" will check to see if their outdoor BBQ was good enough to serve food? with about 12 pieces of potato wedges to share between 2 people, and 1 squid tube each, and 2 mouthful of lamb barley dish, plus 2 spoonfull of salad each, and 3 pieces of tiny pita bread with - credit to them - very yummy dips, we left the place hungry. Not the Greek meal we expect. I personally think the worst thing is that after reading so many similar reviews and then we encountered the same thing, it's a shame that the restaurant has not looked for ways to improve their service and food. Also very shocking to read very defensive and rude comment by the owner in one of the reviews below, yes the review was not that great and getting personal, but surely the owner can show some professionalism? 1 star for BYO and some staff there who are smiley and friendly. Thought we could go out to support some small local businesses after COVID and the floods... maybe will go somewhere else. Disappointing.

The first thing you notice when walking in is the smell of the coals and the food cooking on the outside grill. The courtyard is very nice and aptly decorated. That is where the good things stop, even though it is a very simple set menu the first dish of dips took nearly an hour to come out and that was their best dish. The lamb with barley was tasteless and not seasoned at all and the chichen skewer was so burnt it was inedible. The squid skewer on the other hand was succulent. Very inconsistent over all.

Kouzina is a little slice of Greek heaven nestled away from the hustle and bustle of byron. The food, atmosphere and friendly staff make this place unforgettable, and you’ll swear you’ve been transported to a taverna on a Greek island. The menu is set, with a great vego options the Greek salad and calamari skewers are favourites. Don’t forget it’s BYO. Do yourself a favour and make a booking ASAP,

This restaurant is over priced and over hyped. $60 for a set menu with no dessert and tiny portions. When we asked the waitress what was being served as part of the banquet her reply was “we don’t even know what the kitchen is serving!” The food was under seasoned and flavourless and not really Greek. The mezze plate was so small we thought someone was playing a joke on us. Lamb served with no carbs and a watermelon salad with no dressing - a very odd combination. The only reason we didn’t give it one star is because the chips were amazing. And by the way it’s BYO which they don’t tell you when you make the booking. Give this place a miss.
