Review Thanh Binh Restaurant - Cabramatta

Jimmy Ng. Tr.
I think they have changed the chef. I’m a local and I haven’t been back to this really for 10 years. Today coming back, I’m a bit disappointed. May be it is just my opinion but the taste I got used to has gone. I can see the quality of how the dish being made is pretty average. However, The portion is great, enough to make you full. The service was bad at the time I came in. The guy took a wrong order. However, the foods were delivered fast. Overall I think Thanh Binh just a place to get your tummy full, don’t expect yummy. I hope it will be better next time I come back.

This restaurant is a well known institution in Cabramatta, having been around since 1995. In terms of signature dishes, it’s known for having the best sugarcane prawns wraps (which unfortunately we forgot to try) but also offers a really wide selection on its menu. The beef pho was quite good, definitely authentic, the lemongrass chicken very tasty (although maybe a bit salty), the pancakes were excellent and the rice paper rolls probably the only thing that was average. All in all though it gets full marks for the food and the super efficient service.

When my son suggested we should try some Vietnamese food for lunch we decided to go to the best place we could think of for such cuisine- Cabramatta. Looking around the main streets for a suitable place we came upon Thanh Binh Restaurant on John Street. The large number of locals that filled the place around lunch time suggested that this was indeed a popular place among the locals- usually a good sign. The owner was very helpful when it came to choosing the items off the extensive menu. He even advised us to reduce the number of dishes as he felt it would be too much. He was right. Apart from the usual Pho we chose a pork and duck dish with steamed rice. They were fantastic. My son also enjoyed a Durian Smoothie which was fresh and tasty. The only downside was that there was not enough room between tables but only a minor inconvenience. They only accept cash. Definitely worth a visit.

Service was good! Food were great! Nice and clean, wrapped up cutlery. I had Banh Xoe and that was amazing!

Reasonable price, quick service and delicious foods

Typical Vietnamese restaurant with typical dishes, nothing spectacular but it wasn’t bad.

Really tasty soup! Will come back for sure.

Came here for the Ban Cuon and it didn't disappoint! Fast service and generous portion
AsianTummy
ordered grilled pork noodle, crab stick noodle and spring rolls. Taste was awesome! My favourite was crab stick noodle

We drove up John st for a second time, packed and busy as usual. So we got a park a few shops from this restaurant and decided to get take away as the kids were sleeping.

Ordered 2 broken rice specials and 1 pho special. The servings did not disappoint and we could not finish the meals. They were tasty and packed full of flavour.

We will try and dine in next time.

Ordered: vermicilli noodle salad with grilled pork, sugarcane prawn $14 & stir fry noodles. I’ve come here a lot, food is always pretty good but dishes are much more expensive then they used to be and not as nice.

Had a pleasant and intimate experience dining at Thanh Binh, definitely try the glass noodles! The duck was fresh and juicy however the special rice that accompanied was a little too oily. However, the highlight was the platter of rice paper rolls which made for an immersive and exhilarating eating experience as you are given the 'platter' of rice paper roll fillings and can fill them as you please. If I could I would rate this establishment a 6/5 as the staff there were very patient and more than happy to help!!

One of the best Vietnamese restaurant in cabbramatta, my friends got the special pho and it was really good. The broth was dark but it was savoury and salty. The place was packed, we barely got any seats but fortunately we got seats towards the back. I had the Bo Xao ca ngo (beef fillet with tomato rice). The beef fillet was nicely cooked and it was really tender. Overall I had a great experience dining at this restaurant and I would come to eat again.

A great restaurant to eat out with family. Dishes are well priced (I don’t know why it says $80 for 2 people, that’s not the case at all). Quite a small and packed together place. My favourite dishes from there: banh hoi chau tom, mi xao don do bien

I have eaten here on several occasions. It sits on the main strip of John Street, the perfect location to dive around for great Vietnamese restaurants. I have tried Pho (2.5/5), Rice Paper Rolls with cooked meat (4.5/5) and the regular Rice Paper Rolls with Prawn and Veg (2.5/5). What's nice about this restaurant is that it's a lot cleaner than most of the other restaurants within the area. At every table, there is a hand sanitiser, which is a first for a restaurant that I've been to, as well as fragrances napkins, which you would normally find a fancy Asian reception restaurant.

However, this restaurant is really pricey compared to other restaurants within the area. I bought Rich Paper Rolls with Prawn and Veg which came with 4 rolls that cost a whopping $14.00!!! And when this came, half the rolls were broken! You can find better valued (and not broken) Rice Paper rolls down the street (at Ngoc Duc) for only $5!

Overall, the restaurant is very clean, however, the price here, I do not think I will be coming back for a while.

Ordered the crispy chicken with tomato rice which was great. The rice was balanced in flavour and the chicken was crispy and not too oily. Also had the beef bùn. The beef was tender and came out skewered with a piece of onion in the middle. It was great. The salad, vermecilli noodles and sauce were also spot on. I’ve been to a few Vietnamese restaurants in Cabramatta and this is up there with one of the best.

Amazing service and food. My favourites are the banh canh with crab and sugar cane prawn and the banh tam bi combination. This is definitely a favourite spot amongst locals!

Really enjoyed Thanh Binh took visiting family who have never tried authentic Vietnamese and they enjoyed it as much my family.
We had Bun Bo Hue it was great they could do a less spicy version for the kids and something with a bit more zing for the adults. We also had soft shell crab which was excellent.
My visitors tried Bánh Xèo and Bún đặc biệt which they loved.
Overall they do a great variety of dishes and do them all very well we will return.
One of the best Vietnamese food that I’ve tried ...
Had to share 4 dishes,
1. Beef pho, it was awesome and broth is fragrant and sweet from the beef bone and some aromatic, make the dish is enjoyable.
2. Fried rice, it was a little lack of salt to my liking but it’s a nice dish too.
3. Their signature dish, fresh roll that you assemble your self, come with rice paper roll that you have to dip in hot water before you roll it!
4. Spring roll, it was delish, but a little over fried to me.
Will come back for sure.

Oh man, I love viet food and I miss it so much now that I'm out of the country so every time I'm back, Cabra is ALWAYS on the list. Never disappoints. Caught up with a friend here on a Monday night, loads of seats and fast services.

Got a huge bowl of pho for $14 (ridic right, and they already say the price has gone up...) and it can seriously feed two people if you aren't a huge eater. So much meat and beef balls and soup. So good on a winter's night. My friend for the rice paper rolls... looked good too. I always wish we had more people to share dishes.
Don't worry, will keep coming back for more.

This place is usually quite busy, especially towards the end of the week. They offer a decent range of food to choose from. Service is ok! Price range is average. Portions are a bit small for what you pay. Food quality is pretty good. We ordered the rice paper with sugar cane shrimp, vietnamese pancake and spring rolls with vermicelli noodles. The portions are abit small for what you pay. Otherwise their service is quite efficient.

Came here for my grandfather's, mum's and my birthday. We all ordered the same three dishes that consist of prawn on a sugar cane stick, vermicelli, fresh lettuce, carrots, fish sauce, and many more. My mum just kept ordering and it was so much that I was actually enjoying the food for once.

Came here for lunch with family and ordered the “Banh Hoi Chao Tom” (Sugar Cane Prawns) and “Soda Chanh” (Lemon Soda). The sugar cane prawns were very nice (especially when eating it as a set meal in a rice paper roll (with fish sauce, lettuce, carrots and noodles). The flavour combination was delicious between the sourness from the carrots, the freshness from the cucumbers and lettuce and the tangy and saltiness flavour from the fish sauce. I always enjoying eating this meal at Vietnamese restaurants because it is a light, not messy to eat (can eat if you want a quick lunch) and it has different elements of flavours so you don’t get sick of eating the same thing). For $22, it’s not a bad price for a full meal that makes you full but not feeling bloated.

The lemon soda was refreshing, the taste was quite sour though (perhaps they put too much lemon and it was too overpowering or they did not put much sugar in it?). The staff were very nice (all were quite young so they were very open in making conversations) and service was quite average with the food taking around 20-30mins wait. The restaurant had a nice vibe to it and it had a very open space (it wasn’t busy at the time) so it was a very nice atmosphere.

Overall, the food was nice but I felt that it was a bit average because the Sugar Cane Prawns can be found at most Vietnamese restaurants and this one had nothing special that makes it different to all the others. The lemon soda would’ve been tastier if more sugar was added however, the food and drink was still tasty.

One of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Sydney. The banh hoi chao tom (sugarcane prawn wraps) are amazing and on par with my other favourite restaurant.

Great customer service by the owner the last time we visited.

Consistently really good food- very tasty and generous servings.
The service is always friendly and prompt, very personable wait staff.
One of the cleanest restaurants in Cabramatta!! Their cutlery is wrapped plastic and they have bottles of hand sanitiser on the table.
The avocado shake is awesome.

over the years Thanh Binh has changed, the food have got better than better each visit. Their famous sugar cane prawn warps, when you smell it makes your mouth water straight away.
The bad side the prices go up as well.

Food here is a 4/5. The prices however have continually increased over the years on one particular dish... the noodle vermicelli with prawn paste. The portion has also reduced by half but I still come here because it's my sisters favourite restaurant..

Came here with friends on friday night. It was quite busy but luckily we got a table. I had a bowl of pho ga and my hubby had a vermicelli dish. Service was quick and sufficient. Food came out fairly quick. Pho ga was flavoursome but less salty. I also tried fish cake in the vermicelli, which was really tasty. All dishes look authentic and reasonable price. Highly reccomemnd this place if you dont want to fail trying other restaurants in cabrra. I cannot wait to try their pho tai next time :)

Love the diy rice paper rolls here! We always get the sugar cane prawn rice paper rolls ($18). Fresh and tasty, and somehow taste so much better than when we try to diy at home. Waiters were happy to top up our basket of veges.

Pho ($12) is also really good. Broth was full of well-balanced, authentic flavours.

Back to the delicious food and we are stepping into the restaurant Thanh Bihn. This restaurant was established by the mother of celebrity chef Dan Hong. A southern Viet restaurant, we sampled some staples being the bahn xeo, a savoury a thin crisp crepe/pancake filled with bean sprouts carrot, chicken and spices. The highlight of this visit was the roll your own rice paper rolls with sugarcane prawn. This was not because of my awesome assembly skills (which, it turns out, aren't so awesome) but because the sugarcane prawns were outstanding.

Service here was lovely. The waiter kindly showed me an alternative to the dish I wanted, which was cheaper and better fitting to eat for one person (I unknowingly wanted a meal intended for two). My and my partners dish were slightly above average. Lots to choose from, you'll definitely find something here!

Yummy prawn meat on sugar cane but pricey.

Thanh Binh offers a traditional Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. It is located on the shopping strip of Cabramatta. This restaurant is known for its prawn meat on sugar cane but because of a government ban on prawn meat in December 2016, there had been a price rise as a result (I only found out about this as the restaurant wrote a `spill' on their reasoning for a price hike and its kept at every table).

As this restaurant is known for its prawn meat on sugar cane, why order anything else? I also ordered a kids bowl of noodle soup as my child wanted 'noodles`.

The kids noodle (flat rice noodles with pho broth- probably twice the size of a rice bowl) had come out first and I wasn't too keen on trying the soup as there was an oily layer on top which left an oily residue on the spoon. Besides that, the noodles were soft and the broth was tasty. It was nicely balanced in flavours with the sweet and salty. I could also taste the star anise which I didn't mind. It also came out piping hot which I personally prefer.

My dish was the highlight. My dish came with x2 prawn meat on sugar canes that was cut in half and spread out on the plate. It also came with vermicelli topped with cooked shallots and something that tasted like fried pieces of fat and pickled carrots. There was a basket of iceberg lettuce, cucumber and 3 varieties of Asian herbs (I don't like raw bean sprouts so I opted to not have it). There was also a plate of rice paper sheets, dipping sauce and a bowl of hot water to lightly soak rice paper sheets. There was also a wet wipe to wipe your hands after your meal. (There is a large bottle of Aquim hand sanitizer on each table which is a great idea but no other restaurant in Cabramatta I've been to offers this).

The prawn meat was soft, not chewy and yummy. It was sweet and salty and was next level yum when wrapped as a little parcel with the fresh herbs, vermicelli, cucumber, carrots, and lettuce and dipped in the sauce. It tasted fresh, crunchy and the combination of flavours was good. If you aren't use to eating Asian herbs, go easy on it as it can be a bit strong in flavour. The dipping sauce was nice with the chilli but I did find it too salty. I like how you can create your wrap however you like to suit your taste buDS. Be careful not to soak the rice paper sheets as it will go too soft and easily rip apart. All you do is dip the sheet in the hot water for a second whilst rotating the sheet, make sure its completely covered, it will feel slightly firm but when you finish wrapping your parcel, it will be soft enough to eat whilst retaining its shape and chewy texture.

It is a bit pricey for $22 but I would come back just for the prawn meat. Staff were friendly. One of a few restaurants offering EFT facilities, otherwise always carry cash when eating/buying in Cabramatta.

We tried the pho tai, spring rolls and lemongrass beef vermicelli salad. Spring rolls were fresh and super tasty and the pho and beef were solid too.
Looking forward to coming back and trying the rest of the menu. Staff and service was also solid.

A word of advice - don't rely on the menu shown in the Zomato app. There is no banquet menu and they don't sell wine (both are shown in the app menu).

I have been going to Thanh Binh since I was a child .. the food was amazing
My favourite was the sugar cane prawn vermicelli and the phó tai .. ever since they have changed management the food hasn't been the same ..
it is a shame

Solid Viet! The food never disappoints and excellent service. It's a couple dollars pricier than the other restaurants in the area, but if gladly pay it. The sugar cane prawns dish is tasty, It's a little tricky at the start but once you get the hang of it, it's easy and fun :)

One of the mainstay restaurants if you're even slightly in the know in Cabramatta, Thanh Binh in Vietnamese circles is probably most well known for their DIY rice paper roll dishes. The combination broken rice in this instance was also flavoursome and also included some kimchi styled veggies.

As other reviewers have commented, Thanh Binh are remarkably (for Cabramatta at least) stringent on hygiene and have a simple yet clean presentation for their store. I would definitely recommend newcomers to the area and to Vietnamese food as a whole make this a high priority pit stop!

Thanh Binh is probably the cleanest restaurant in Cabramatta, that's not saying much, but at least you know it's clean. Today I ordered the sugar cane prawn rice paper rolls, which is their specialty.

The dish comes deconstructed so you need to build it yourself, which is pretty fun!

Let's just say one word fantastic, we were from interstate and arrived just before close and we walked i and they gladly accommodated us just as they would with any one of their patrons I agree with other posters very clean and staff are on the ball service is 10/10 and food was spectacular could not more than highly recommended.

Other restaurants that refused us as we were slightly after close missed out as this is our new local and we will be talking about this to all the people on here and to all our family and friends.

Again thanks to all the team again @thanh Binh

One thing that makes this restaurant stand out from all other Vietnamese food joints in Cabramatta, is cleanliness!
Thanh Binh is most probably the cleanest place I've eaten at, in the area. Their cutlery is even wrapped individually in sterilised sheets.

Food wise- their menu is not overly complicating, but filling. You obviously need to try the pho!

Had a wonderful dinner tonight at Thanh Binh. It had a very nice warm environment which was great and welcoming. As we were handed our menus we were also served complimentary green tea which was a lovely gesture. I ordered with some family and friends so I had some of the chicken corn soup, Pork rice paper rolls and roast duck with rice and bok choy. The food was absolutley amazing. Exactly what you'd want when ordering Vietnamese cuisine, fresh cool flavours of coriander and greens cutting through lovingly prepared warm meats like pork, Beef, duck, etc. The staff were also very polite and committed. I would definitely visit again and the amount of people in there seen through the window prove that this restaurant is definitely a treasure.

Ventured to this place late at night, after some good Vietnamese food and did I find it! Partnered with some friendly and helpful Vietnamese hospitality at affordable prices this place I recommend for all. Had the prawn wraps and it was relish!

Update review: 2/12/16
Ventured here on a 40 degree day since it was the only Vietnamese restaurant which seemed to have its door close (indicative of aircon).
They are the only Vietnamese restaurant I know to package their cutlery is plastic bags!
Also can't forget the ice tea they served!!

With so many choices on John st it's hard to commit to one place! We chose Thanh binh as it had decent reviews and it wasn't as busy as the other locations for a Saturday lunch. The dishes were OK but not outstanding. We chose the Vietnamese pancake which was slightly bland, the deep fried quail which was good but had a side of terrible rice and the BBQ pepper beef which was the best of the bunch. It wasn't terrible but there are better options when in Cabramatta.

Food: Amazing food! from the wonton soup to the fried chicken with fish cakes, everything on their menu that we have tried is amazing and full of flavor.
the menu also offers a diverse range of foods to cater for different groups which i think is good - the more choices, the better!

Although most seafood dishes wont be such generous portion sizes, and may not be worth your buck for the amount of seafood you actually get on the plate.

Price: the prices on the menu are definitely cheap and affordable!

It is also a great environment to have dinner or any dine - outings, the restaurant also offers great hospitality and service.

Was expecting more
My partner found it average her noodle soup with crispy chicken
My broken rice I got 2 pork chops,I thought I was getting the pork patty and pork shreds with my meal, nope! Just 2 pork chops
Had there pork and prawn rice paper rolls,it's ok but the sauce they give with it is pretty weak and light.
Prices a little more than expected
With so much competition at Cabramatta I feel this is on the lower end of the scale

Great place for Vietnamese rice dishes, but their PHO is lacking in flavour. The pork chop rice, Vercelli noodles with combination grill dishes, rice paper wraps DIY are all good.Best bet is to eat grilled dishes with the fresh herbs and salad, great light meal from a Vietnamese store.Rating is based on their grilled dishes :D

Roll your own rice paper rolls at Thanh Binh... -- The Food -- Steam rice noodle and sugar cane prawn with fish sauce --Comes with rice paper, lettuce, cucumber & fresh herbs. Basically lightly wet the rice paper and place lettuce, cucumber, rice noodle and sugar cane prawn and you are ready to roll! The sugar cane prawn is flavourful with a bouncy and smooth texture. The fish sauce gives the roll an extra kick of flavour! Overall, I quite enjoyed this dish as I love sugar cane prawn. Refreshing feeling with the fresh herbs. However, I was quite thirsty at the end of the meal (probably too much fish sauce).

Who knew the Moon Festival at Cabramatta is this hectic? It's my first year at the Moon Fest, and I have majorly under-estimated the size and activities that the festival boasts. Rides and showbag stalls line the streets, and it is festive and fun and all, but the real hunt here is for good pho. Cabramatta is known for their amazing asian foods, pho, restaurants and vietnamese desserts. We stop at every single food store, picking up the boxed desserts and soups, ooh-ing over the colorful jellys and beans. Finally settling on a restaurant, we hustle inside to find that it is just as crowded as the outside. The menus are sticky with food sauces but we order anyway, tummys rumbling. Let's just hope their pho makes up for sticky tables and sticky menus. Beef pho 12 Crispy Chicken with tomato rice 13.50 The pho was delicious, but unfortunately it tasted no different than those in Eastwood or the city, and their Crispy Chicken portion was disappointing to say the least. At Thanh Binh the service is quick and no frills. Take a seat, here's your menu, your tea, and your cutlery. The interaction with your server is minimal, but you have everything you need to enjoy your pho. There is enough flavour in the soup to not need any of the sauces; it is sweet, lightly salted, and has a wholesome meatiness from the beef bones and charred onion. But if you like your broth spicy or with a bit of tang, a few pieces of the thinly sliced birds eye chilli or a squeeze of lemon juice will do the trick. The thinly sliced rare beef could do with a bit of hoisin sauce after it is cooked through in the hot soup, but the beef balls are flavoured, and bouncy with bite. The rice noodles are we

Thanh Binh – this is another Sydney institution and delivers some of the best authentic Vietnamese food. Classic banh xeo chey – rice-flour pancake with prawns, mung bean, bean sprouts and banh hoi chao tom – steamed rice noodle with sugar cane prawns that you make yourself, are our favourites. But it’s a big menu so you’ll find lots of other dishes to try. As well as Cabramatta, they’re also in King St Newton.
The Random Foodie
Lately it has been a hit and miss such as this occasion but when it's good, it's really good. Hopefully in future visits, the magic is still there. I would also recommend trying the other dishes such as their famous chao tom.

Thanh Bình is a Chinese-Vietnamese restaurant with a branch in Newtown and one in Cabramatta, at 52 John Street, where I had lunch with my friends A and X. X (her real initial) is part-Vietnamese and ordered for us: juicy prawn rice paper rolls, noodles w

The Newtown sister restaurant has been one of my long standing favourites but visiting the Cabramatta restaurant of Thanh Binh has a more cheap and cheerful local atmosphere and provides a few more interesting dishes not found at the Newtown restaurant. T

...how can you go past a ‘Multi-Award Winning Restaurant’, I soon found out, after perusing the menu and dodging the intestines, tripe, tendons, blood jelly and brisket, I picked a Number 70 (their specialty) sugar cane prawns.

Pho Not Hot. Pho served was not hot and meat would not cook in the broth. When I told them they wanted to argue. What is there to argue about?

Generous, vibrant servings. Delicious, wholesome Vietnamese food. What more can I ask for?

This place has great traditional Vietnamese food. The prawn rolls, grilled pork and springroll dish with vermicilli that you can roll by yourself is delicious. It's fresh, healthy and yummy. Must try

Pho tastes sooooo crap compared to other pho places. Crispy chicken skin was good, the noodles in the soup however were effing cheap and terrible! Never going back there again!!!!!

Average service.. Started going to this place after a couple of years of not trying it. Within one month, we came back there three times. The first two times were pretty good, with orders coming out on time and as we ordered. The third time though, ruined the experience.

We ordered the Goat Curry and Pork Meatball (Nem Nuong) dishes. After a long half hour wait, after which the people who came in after us were served before us, they brought out a wrong duck dish that we never ordered. Now, I don't see how it's possible to misunderstand the two. That was sent back and the order corrected. After another wait, the Goat curry was brought out, whilst the other person was left to wait for the correct dish. After another half hour's wait (1 hour in total) we decided to just grab the missing dish as a takeaway and never return.

This is very unfortunate for them. I don't think I've been to the same restaurant regularly because of my previous experiences, and they managed to stuff it up. They've lost a customer in me and those I pass the experience on to.

A ranking for them?
Food: 3/5
Service: 1/5

This place is a hit and miss. I ordered combination crunchy noodle which was delicious and wifey ordered combination wonton noodle soup which was bland. Try to avoid the owner from taking your order he has a grumpy persona.

Fantastic food. Thanh Binh has been a favourite place to go for a bowl of Pho before or after stocking up on essentials from Cabarmatta's great butchers, fishmongers, grocers and fruit and veg shops. We went on sunday at about2pm and the place was typically packed out.
We ordered pig-blood congee, and spicy pork soup, calamari and a soft rice noodle, pork and fired bun dish. All were great, although the congee was a bit flavourless - could've done with a bit more omph in the stock. Mind you, the last time I had it it was in the pouring rain at a roadside stall in Hue. The blood is like a purple tofu - very interesting texturally, but very subtle flavour. The fried calamari was brilliant, esp with the salt and pepper with lemon juice as a dipping sauce.
Since we've been coming over the past 6 years, the prices have increased steadily but that said, it's still a good value meal. We never spend more than $20pp and always walk away more than satisfied. The tea is always lovely too. and the new decor is an improvement, but still captures the traditional style. Ihave tried quite a few other places in cab but keep coming back here!
