Review Ochre Restaurant - Cairns

I love to dine in here so much! Food is always fresh, decent portion and cook and seasoned perfectly. Drink selection and cocktail is great. Waiters and bartender is professional and friendly. My favorite is beef tenderloin and mango madness. Beef was cooked perfectly and cheesecake was not too sweet which is great. I hope seafood platter back on the menu in the future!

This place was amazing. The view out over the water is awesome. All the staff were lovely, the food was delicious! We took the advice of another reviewer and splurged on entrees which was amazing. We had the damper, the carpaccio, the gnocchi and the pork belly. Everything was cooked perfectly. Make sure you visit this place and make sure you save room for dessert! The chocolate trio was to die for.

Excellent location and views at waterfront. Food was delicious and came at good value (3 courses $75). Service was a little lacking during our particular occasion. We were served a different kind of fish for the sashimi plate than what was described on the menu and wait times between meals were very long (almost an hour between entree and mains).

As soon as I found out about this place I just knew I had to check it out. The food was absolutely delicious, using Australian native/bush tucker ingredients to create a truly authentic Australian eating experience! The staff were so wonderful and inviting. I definitely will be going back again.

Amazing Restaurant in Cairns. The best restaurant in the city. Delicious food, very friendly staff, went there on the 31st of Dec. Restaurant was very busy, even though, waitress's looked after us, quick with drinks and food. Not overpriced - fantastic prices for great food and drinks. Would 100% recommend to everyone. Don't miss out while you visiting Cairns. Beautiful views also all around wharf.

Very interesting menu choices, using native ingredients to spice up the plates. Overall good quality of food, with ups (kangaroo was tender, perfectly cooked and delicious) and downs (the oysters, a daily special, were evidently not fresh) and a great final note with the dessert. Can't say much on the views, as it was raining hard!

Caught fresh fish on a charter and dropped them off at the restaurant on my return. Spoke with the chef about how they would be prepared and was overwhelmed by the result. Three separate dishes (sashimi, tempura, grilled) impeccably presented and ridiculously good eating. Was $45/head and having eaten it I would happily have supplied the fish and paid $100/head. One of the best fish feeds I've ever enjoyed.

Located on the waters edge the restaurant is in a great position. The range of food was interesting with lots of local influenced dishes. I sampled a range of the smaller dishes to get a taste of everything and overall is was a very nice lunch.

We had such a great night the first time we returned the next night. The location was great, right on the Boardwalk. The food was delicious we tried the Australian Antipasto, the Salt and Native Pepperleaf Crocodile, the Morganbury beef strip loin, and the lamb rump with chickpea tabbouleh and they were all delicious. But what made us return was the amazing list of cocktails and locally sourced spirits. The standout drink was the Old Fashioned using local Mt Uncle whiskey and torched orange that has been barrelled for 3 months. It was outstanding. I highly recommend Ochre and would love the opportunity to return to Cairns for dinner.

Made a weekend dinner reservation here for one during a trip to Cairns.

Happily sipped on a fun, cheeky cocktail whilst perusing the menu. Chose to order the 'salt and native pepper crocodile and prawns', and then the 'quandong brulee' for dessert. Nice hint of flavours, although portions appeared small for price and missed potential of highlighting the lovely native ingredients.

Smart casual ambience with indoor and outdoor (along the esplanade) seating available. Friendly and efficient service. Prices on higher end.

Overall, an interesting concept (introduction to native Australian foods), however just missing the mark for execution.

3.9 stars for the male server who was absolutely amazing and 0.1 star for the scallops and pork belly.

Australian Platter - boring, mild flavours, no foodgasm here.

Scallops and pork belly - scallops were tiny, sauce was great, pork belly was like fatty heaven.

Mackerel Sugar Cane sticks - the older, meaner cousin of Sugar Cane Prawns. Again, no fireworks in my mouth, just boring old flavours. Sugar cane was flavourless which is a shame because they should still have a tinge of a sweetness to them no matter how you cook it.

Salt n pepper quail - Good flavour but overly salty.

Tempura bugs - Mushy, seemed frozen or pre-cooked before fried.

Salt n pepper crocodile n prawns - Crocodile over-cooked making it too tough and chewy. Prawns were okay. Flavour was acceptable.

We didn’t end up finishing our food in the end because of how disappointed we were, given the great Google Reviews. Our waiter noticed this and asked us if everything was okay; I said “yes, we’re just too full”, I didn’t want to disappoint him because he seemed so passionate about his job. All in all, please do visit if you have ALOT of extra money lying around.

Presentation is about where the quality ends. Great idea using native flavours, only you couldn’t taste them. Bland food, wine list was also unimpressive. Service was friendly. Did feel like we’d wasted shitloads of money on nothing. Very disappointing.

Food was wonderful! The white chocolate and cumin mash was fantastic. Steaks were cooked to perfect. The menu was filled with top quality Australian flavours and produce. The only thing that could be improved on is the service. Staff were friendly but did not match the standard of the food here.

Loved this place. Excellent food which was inventive and well prepared. There was a great value option available for lunch. Would highly recommend. Lovely setting on the waterside too.

Great variety of food and great at meeting my difficult dietary requirements. Maybe a bit pricey but a good place for an sexy dinner. Staff seem lovely and wine list bliss.

Very shit service !!!! Made booking earlier, but give us a shit table. Literally a corner in the restaurant. The manager on duty ( a male person ) should be fired!!! Very terrible experience , won't be here anymore. Strongly don't reckon this restaurant !!!

Ochre is 1 of a few rare restaurants that features Australian bushfood and native ingredients on their menu so I was definitely keen for a visit. I decided to go for salt & pepper leaf crocodile & prawns and wattleseed pavlova. The crocodile & prawns were great but the batter was sooo salty, although the pickles and lemon aspen sambal were able to tone it down a little bit. When I mentioned how salty it was the waitress explained that due to the nature of the native ingredients, it tasted indeed more powerful. The pavlova came out looking like a swiss roll but tasted like a pav! The wattleseed cream has a nutty taste to it and I'm glad the Davidson plum was there to give it a different contrast and texture, otherwise the whole thing would have been very sweet. All in all it was a great experience, my waitress Karly was super friendly and approachable. There are plenty of other things on the menu that I would definitely come back and try next time.

Delicious food and exceptional service from staff.

Favorite light lunch meal was the crocodile spring rolls, and quongdong brûlée was Devine.

Came to try this place as it was heavily advertised. We had the 3 course tasting menu.
Had the Tempura Gulf bugs and Salt & Native Pepper Leaf Crocodile & Prawns for entrée. They were both delightful. For mains Morganbury pork fillet and sirloin..... had asked for the sirloin to be medium done. It was overcooked, once i notified the staff they brought around another ( it was different in presentation aswell) again it was overcooked and tough to cut through, i couldn't eat it and my partner was happy to eat a 2nd main. And then for dessert we had Mango Delice and quandong brûlée. Again both fantastic desserts.
Besides the little main hiccup on the main the rest of the meal was great, staff pleasant and attentive.

We went to Ochre as a group of 12 for a birthday celebration the setting was great and the wait service was very friendly and attentive . Unfortunately the food let it down badly. The entrees were good and tasty but overpriced for the very small portion that you receive . The main meals that we had were very disappointing, my wife's pasta dish was dry and rubbery with over cooked clams and prawns . My main was terrible the seafood was all very overcooked and the laksa sauce was almost tasteless obviously who ever made this sauce has no idea what laksa should taste like and with tough rice noodles the dish was not nice at all. The calamari dish was stone cold .My son inlaw had the $44 steak which was about 1/2 the size of a tennis ball and was gone in 2 bites neadless to say he was still very hungry when he had finished. For the quite expensive prices the food was very disappointing and I would not go back again.
Dave

My family and I had a beautiful dinner at Ochre recently. All of the food was delicious with unique and interesting flavours, and the service was attentive without being overbearing. The pork belly was one of the best entrees I've ever had! I would definitely recommend for a lovely, out of the ordinary meal.

Far from impressed from the dinner we had here. Upon seating and looking at the menu, we were interrupted at least 5 times in the space of 5 minutes by waiters asking us if we wanted to order drinks. It seemed very pushy.

The entree of tempura bugs with lemongrass and papaya salad was ok. Main of wallaby was badly cooked - some parts were burnt and tough, whilst other parts were uncooked/slightly sweated. The kipfler potato mash was cold and lumpy. The beef tenderloin main was passable, albeit cooked medium instead of medium rare.

The nail on the coffin was when we paid our bill and departed the restaurant. We were chased down after walking 100m from the restaurant by a waitress claiming that they had made a mistake with the billing. With her vague description of the billing error, we were lead to believe they had overcharged us. It was only when we returned we found out that we were actually undercharged and we owed them money. The money owed wasn't an issue, which is why we paid without making a scene. I felt it was extremely unprofessional service.

In Cairns for the TNQ Innovation awards, really inspiring; but wanted a good dinner to finish a very full-on day. I had seen Ochre on Ch7 so decided to give it a go.
Didn't get off to a great start: some confusion over shaking or stirring Martinis. The staff handled it well and the barman hand delivered a really good one, stirred. Then on to a main - roast duck with green-tea soba noodles, kimchee and Davidson plum stock sauce. A surprising, but absolutely great, combination of flavours along with perfectly-cooked duck breast.
All the staff were friendly, helpful and attentive.
My only problem was that my wife was back in Brisbane. This is going to cost me a good night out when I get home!
Very highly recommended.

When in Australia we like to sample Australian food, and the premier restaurant to do this in Cairns is Ochre. This is now our fourth visit to Cairns and the last three times our culinary highlight has been dinner here! Red Ochre as it used to be called, had a great rustic venue in the centre of town with outside seating we loved. Real Oz-iana. Food and service was always sensational, and the menu includes local game such as wallaby, bay bugs, kangaroo and my favourite.. crocodile! Use of local breads (damper), herbs and plants (wattle) just added to the outback mystic of the fare on offer. This time the location had changed and the name shortened. Venue is now a bit formulaic in a long line of similarly styled restaurants and getting us seated was a bit problematic, best to arrive after six when dinner service starts. However the food came quickly and I was soon overwhelmed by my mesmerizing dish of salt water croc and prawns! The wattle seed pavlova was unique and superb!
God Bless Everyone
What a nice place to eat, food was awesome and environment great for dating. Thumb up guys. I would love to comeback here if im in cairns again.

Very disappointed with our meal. Miss 6 had the best meal of all which was crispy chicken, chips and salad. My DH had surf and turf with a sauce that ruined the whole meal and it was so bad he couldn't finish it. I had crocodile and prawns with Vietnamese pickled salad that was inedible by itself but mixed nicely with the prawns. Crocodile was very chewy. The child's meal and my pina colada' was the only thing that made the evening ok. The young male waiter was nice, especially with helping us being heckled by local resident. Sorry but won't be returning.

Very bad service. The manager on duty is not friendly at all. He treated us in a very careless way. He did not make clear where we should sit and did not show us the way (at around 6pm, only a few customers) . When we sat down for a while, he came and asked us to leave the table and go for another table by ourselves, without any sincerity and apology. Terrible! Please Fire this guy. He is not suitable for this restauraunt. For other customers, hope you never meet this manager and good luck.

Booked this restaurant and absolutely loved it. The food was very unigue using Australian sourced ingredients, and staff were friendly and helpful. Definitely worth the price and woukd highly recommend the chocolate desert plate .

On a holiday from sydney with my partner and came to Ochre as it was highly recommended. The waitress was helpful and very knowledgeable regarding wine pairings. Ochre had great service, incredible food using Australian produce and fantastic atmosphere! Highly recommend!

Wonderful service, wonderful food! As we were at the tail end of our Cairns holiday, thus limiting our funds, we used our I-venture card as payment. Due to this the menu choices were meant to be limited to either the Crocodile and Prawn or Kangaroo. As my qife doesn't eat either of these the staff were very accomodating and allowed her to order the Twice cooked chicken instead. Myself and 2 friends ordered the Crocodile and all 4 of us left the restaurant extremely satisfied with our choices, and the chef's expert use of Australian native products.

Highly recommend! And will return. Ocre has joined many other attractions of FNQ in forming part of our love affair with Cairns. Can't wait to return to Cairns and can't wait to sample a wider variety of the chef's wares!

While holidaying up in cairns for the week, my boyfriend and I decided to treat ourselves to a fancy Australian meal.
Our waitress was wonderful she made the whole experience so much better for us.
First up was the tempura Mortem bay bugs... This one was a total wildcard we were not sure what we where getting ourselves into.
It was so juicy and tasted somewhat like crab we where pleasantly surprised with this dish.
Next we shared a plate of Wallaby ... It was amazing, it was cooked to perfection and the accompanying sauce and salad complemented the dish perfectly.
Last off we shared a plate of crocodile and prawns, the prawns were good with the right flavours. The crocodile was beautiful but probably my least favourite dish as it lacked a little flavour.

Overall this restaurant was great, but a little but on the expensive side for 2 students on a budget holiday, in total we paid $130 including a beer and lychee cocktail!

Ochre restaurant is pretty average. I've been here many times with work and the food is ok, but pretty average service.

It's mostly good if your a tourist that would like to try kangaroo, emu, crocodile etc!

They do a lot of large groups squished into a very small area. Often is very hot inside as there a/c is not up to it.

I love Ochre! This restaurant has maintained an incredible commitment to local produce and it's great to always find something on the menu to surprise me! I recently took a foodie friend from Melbourne to this place and they said the barramundi was the best fish he'd had in his life. An excellent restaurant all round; service, food, innovation and ambiance.

We had a very pleasant experience at this restaurant! Not only is the foundation of the establishment very unique, the food was excellent! Between my party we got the bugs, kangaroo and fish of the day (which was a snapper) and everything was superb. Each dish was very well paired and cooked to near perfection. Particularly the kangaroo, which can be quite tricky. Only thing preventing it from a 5 was the service, as they have many backpackers coming in and out there were two servers on their first days who couldn't answer simple questions about the dishes or use the credit card machine. Perhaps better training is needed, but they were very friendly so it didn't bother us.

Definitely recommend for a true Aussie experience!

I chose this restaurant for my birthday meal as I wanted to try some of the more exotic Australian meats. We booked a table via their website and the restaurant was mostly empty when we arrived, it soon filled.
For starters we had -
Australian Antipasto Salmon beetroot gravlax, kangaroo terrine – Kakadu plum, emu carpaccio – green ant salsa verde, smoked crocodile – riberry mayo, lemon aspen fresh fried cheese
It was great to try. Miss12 was partial to the smoked crocodile!
For my main I had Wallaby Topside (even though I had patted one that very day) , it was good and the meat was plentiful. My husband had the Char Grilled Kangaroo Sirloin , he enjoyed the experience.
We enjoyed the evening and would recommend the experience.

Appalling Duck was tough an.... Appalling
Duck was tough and tasteless
Service was good

Delicious, fresh, local, and extremely generous portions - a 3 course menu for one was enough to feed two! The waitress explained the menu very clearly to us.

OMG! These guys do it well.. In Cairns for business (as I am several times a year), I left my decision to go out for dinner til after 8 on a Friday evening. Despite an extremely busy night, Carley answered the phone nice and quick and slotted me in to a inside table by the window. The initial greeting was spot on. as I had booked for one person, I was greeted by name on arrival. The atmosphere at Ochre is spot on, relaxed without being cheap and classy without being over the top. My waiter was a rare breed. educated in the menu and wine list, without being a robot and regurgitating the whole menu, which you get a lot in other places. the menu is diverse and intriguing. it was a challenge to decide what to have. Eventually I opted for the roast duck breast with watercrest, shitaki, black rice & mandarin. Well.......its was superb. duck was cooked to perfection, "melt in your mouth" and all the flavors of the dish where sharp, and harmonious. The Verdelho accompanied the dish perfectly. Backing this up was the quandong crème brulee.......OMG! I choose the crème brulee wherever I eat, as a bit of a comparison. Hands down, this is the best crème brulee I have eaten within Australia.
I a nutshell, if you are looking to have a top shelf meal at reasonable prices and courteous, professional service, Ochre is the place for you.
Give Carley a call.
I will be back as soon as I can. thanks for a great dinning experience.

...this is my first negative post on urban spoon. I have stewed about this for 3 days and I'm clearly still annoyed about my experience to post this. It's such a shame because i was prepared to have a lovely night out with some close friends and this restaurant ruined the night for us. I was absolutely appalled with the service and food quality. This is on the higher end of restaurant pricing for urban spoon and the meal we chose had a minimum of two people which ended up being the worst seafood platter i have ever come across. The tempura batter on the calamari was cold and greasy like a lot of the other food included in this so called fresh seafood platter. It actually made myself and the other person i shared this dish with ill from the grease. This is not good enough from a restaurant that claims to have the freshest local produce. I'm not normally one to complain but this time I couldn't leave without giving some constructive criticism. I didn't want my money back, I just wanted to let someone know how upset I was with this meal and receive some sort of an apology or empathy. Instead the manager was patronising, which made me even less
impressed (as you could imagine). I was so disappointed I made a list at the table of all the things that were unacceptable with the seafood platter.
Due to the fact that the seafood platter was only available if 2 people ordered, the main meal only had 1 piece of atlantic salmon that we had to try and divide evenly. This was also the case with the green tea soba noddles rolled up on the one chop stick. This meant one of us had to take a bite before the other could then eat the left overs. I expected a lot more for the price. The green tea soba noodles with ginger and black sesame seeds were bland and uncreative for a seafood dish. I completely didn't appreciate the patronising question from the manager of whether i "had tried green tea soba noodles before?" after I explained this to her. I wasn't even sure what place they had on a seafood platter. The meal got served with a basic "pub" salad and chips as a side!
Strangely we had the table set with a lobster fork with no use as we did not receive any fresh seafood to use this type of utensil with. We had to pour our own drinks for the night and after I made the complaint and asked for the bill, the manager took a further 15mins to come to our table. It saddens me that someone can serve this type of food to paying customers. Especially after seeing how many awards the restaurant has been awarded. It was not good enough!

THIS is how Australian Restaurants should be. From the moment we arrived, the staff were attentive and pleasant without being intrusive, pretty unusual in popular Aussie restaurants. The menu is full of interesting local food options with several dining choices, from tasting plates to degustation, 2 and 3 course set menus and a la carte. Very handy when considering how you want your emu, crocodile, roo or seafood served. And the question - does Estuarine crocodile count as seafood?

We sampled the wattle seed damper bread and local dukka with a bottle of fizzy (an O'Leary Walker Hurtle) to start, whilst we lingered over the substantial menu. We had both tasting platters of Australian Antipasto (Thai Roo, Crocodile wanton, Ocean Trout with green ant gravlax, emu and finger lime labnah) and Seafood Compilation (Spiced Calalmari, Pippi's in coconut and myrtle tom yum, oysters natural, with bloody Mary pearls, and tiger prawns). Both dishes were wonderfully presented, explained by our enthusiastic and passionate server. For mains, we had the fish of the day - Wide Mouth Nannygai with a Red Curry sauce and I had the Crocodile and Prawns in a native pepper seed batter with pickled veg and sambal. I do have to say the crocodile was a bit chewy - and I put this down to the nature of crocodiles, though everything was gorgeously presented. It was a surprise to meet staff who were really passionate and knowledgeable about ingredients (including where the chef shops) and the food they served.

The wine list was wide and reasonably priced. Which pleased my Hubby, so we had multiple bottles.

We finished with a Quandong creme brûlée, mainly because I had no idea what a quandong was! Very nice, but quandongs are hard to some by apparently, so won't be using many at home.

All in all, this was an excellent meal, the location is a rather a nondescript corner in the CBD but the outdoor seating is not affected by this as Cairns traffic seems fairly light.

This is what I expect from a highly rated restaurant in Australia and, I was pleased to see other patrons enjoying the level of service and surprise at the fare that I felt. We'll be back as soon as we can.

Disappointment. Decided to bring some overseas visitors to try out some australian food. What a huge disappointment!

Knowing that we are only small eaters, we decided to go with 1 starter australian antipasto to share and 3 mains to share. Our waitress with the short blonde hair was pretty rude. She was initially friendly but when she tried to persuade us to change the antipasto to a main instead of a starter, but we decline, her whole attitude changed! Knowing that we were only small eaters, we decided against it.

Service was really poor.
After more than an hour of waiting, we decided to enquire if the food was even being cooked! Looking around us, there were 80% of the people still waiting for their food. We decided to approach a waiter to enquire if the meals are ready as we had an early start the next morning and it was getting really late. The blonde waitress replies - '1 hour wait is not too long at all'!

What kind of attitude is that towards fully paying customers??

After the long awaited meals, only 1out of the 3 meals tasted any good.
The beef was tender and the potato stacks were reasonably nice.
The chicken dish was horribly dry and the wallaby was very tough.

Waiting for the bill was another big nightmare .. Took ages too.

What a great big disappointment to a lovely start to a holiday!
Will never ever recommend you to anyone.

Expensive, judgemental and rude staff.

Good but not great. I dined at ochre this week after several good reviews of this restaurant. The service was pleasant, although I did have to ask the waiter several times to bring more drinks. We chose the seafood tasting plate and the entree impressed. It was sizeable too. Unfortunately the main course was disappointing and heavily featured crumbed seafood. The quality of the seafood could not be faulted, but I think the cooking methods were uninteresting. I don,t feel the prices were too bad, but would not order the same dish if I went back

Great food, poor service. The food here is delicious, no doubt about it. After eating here last night with a bunch of friends, we all tried something different, and all of us loved the dishes we had. The fried bugs were perfectly cooked, the pork with macadamia nut crust melted in my mouth, the pork belly and scallops came with a fantastic sauce, and the wallaby was beautifully tender.

Unfortunately, service was slow and the table staff seemed a bit rude at times, even though there were not that many people at the restaurant that night to justify them taking so long. However, the quality of the food was enough that it overcame the flaws in the service, and I would be willing to go back for more.
Ratt
Don't waste your time! It took over an hour and 40 minutes to get our food and we were only a group of 5. Our meals were small! The pork belly main looked like an entree size and we had too pour our own wines as there appeared to be not enough staff. We are locals and will not be coming back.
Leo Krupps
A staple of mine - the ochre has a fantastic modern Australian menu using fresh and amazing local ingredients. Not only is the food superb, the vibe of the restaurant exudes fine dining and the wine menu is one of the best in the city.
Rachel Wilson
The spiced fries, delicious! I had the chicken prosuitto with pumpkin mash. So yummy, good service and beautiful resturant, can't wait to go back and try some really native Australia food :)
Mike
I really enjoyed the food, especially the bugs (entree) but the service started out being really bad due to a language problem. The manager sorted it after the initial problems.
Mattose
Have been told this restaurant is a must for any food lover..... It lives up to reputation and more! Emma was a waitress that was warm, polite and quite knowledgeable.... Nothing was too much trouble....
The food spoke of vibrancy with Australian native notes married perfectly together.
A must try!
Mouchette Le Bon
We had the Australian Platter for two, which included a wattleseed damper, entree of prawns, crocodile & antipasto platter of emu, wontons etc. Main was kangaroo and wallaby with sweet potato fries and buckchoy. Dessert was wattleseed & hazelnut pavolva. The food was amazing, service great, but by the end we were too full!
Jenny
Had the gnocchi as entree and kangaroo as main, was very tasted and had the most perfect balances of flavours! I can imagine anything on the menu would be also as good. Cocktails also very yummy!
Oyster
Entree Excels. One of Cairns better restaurants situated in a central location near the beaches.

The first thing that struck me was not the food but the great service. The floor manager was very pleasant in a bubbly kind of way.

Antipasto's are mostly great, the duck pate is excellent and probably one of the best I've ever tasted - I have tasted a lot!

Mains have a lot of room for improvement, they are mostly too savoury for my taste. Pork cutlets were overly sweet and the five spice duck was too salty. Food should be about promoting natural flavours, not the other way around.

That's it, good but not the best. Would return here for a casual meal.

A childless night led us to finally get the opportunity to try Ochre Restaurant. To Begin....and I stress that.... Service was smooth and professional, friendly but not overbearing or too comfortable. The entree selection was easy- Seafood Compilation as a Main Course to share. The wine selection was fine, and we choose a gorgeous WA wine.
Amy
Ochre is the most highly awarded restaurant and catering company in Cairns; so much so that it's bordering on a foodie institution. The fresh and creative restaurant has a focus on Australian products and native foods making it a delight and a must for tourists and locals alike. As for Nathan and I, it was the perfect location for our two year anniversary dinner.
