Review Salt House - Cairns

Andrew Cornale
Absolutely fantastic! We caught some fresh fish on a charter and for a small fee we dropped off the fish on the same day and the chef cooked it up in all different ways for us to try for dinner. Easily one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. Can’t get much fresher and tastier than that! It was delicious! The chef explained it all to us, showed us the kitchen and provided an all round, exceptional service. Would give it 6 stars if I could.

Beautiful location. It's a good idea to book because it gets busy. The king prawn salad was very nice, and so was the gnocchi. The sourdough was fairly average. Nice vibes and nice atmosphere , but very noisy and busy. I had a nice time and the staff were really awesome and kind.
Carlos Gonzalez
Very nice ambiance feeling tropical with a touch of a refined atmosphere. The service was on point we had a Spanish waitress she was wonderful. The food was great, the prawn salad was fresh and light, a must try, the steak dish was well done with a rich sauce, if I was to offer any thoughts it would be the pork cutlet being too dry. If in the area must try. If you like this review please like and share

Had a wonderful lunch at the Salt House. Love the friendly service by one of the service staff Iona and the comfortable dining experience. We enjoyed the barramundi and lamb rump in particular. The chat potatoes were a great side as well. Thankful for the lovely meal.

My partner and I didn’t know about this place until we walked passed it. The moment we do we knew we have to try it because the vibes and interior are absolutely spot on. We ordered the mango sauce barramundi with fritters and its absolutely bang on, A MUST MUST MUST ORDER. Steak and meringue are very good too. The place and food are definitely up to our expectations, it was a beautiful place to spend a wonderful evening with someone special.

Such a great experience. All the staff a friendly. We didn't have a booking but they were able to seat us. The food (pictured) could not have been tastier. All so fresh. That yellow curry was divine. Special thanks to staff member Chloe for being so lovely.

It was an amazing experience from the minute I walked in... The staff are super friendly and super attentive. The food was amazing too, have to check out the desserts next time..... I'm definitely come back to Salt House again, and will recommend this place to everyone.

Food and cocktails were absolutely delicious and flavorsome. The staff were very friendly and lovely! A clean and aesthetic venue. Only complaint is the inconsistency of reordering drinks - would either be a 15+ minute wait before we could flag someone down, or they'd come straight after having just served us something when we didn't need a fill up just yet.

Mothers Day was the worst service and worst food ive ever had. We went for breakfast and asked for a high chair on arrival and ordered drinks for 4 adults. 3 drinks arrived and were finished when we had to ask where the 4th drink was. Still no high chair so i asked again. After the other drink arrived and still waited so long for the high chair we fed bub in her pram. No salt or pepper on the table. So when we asked staff they said they were all on other tables. No attempt to organise any for us so eventually we asked another table for them ourselves. 2 meals were hot. 2 meals were cold. Ordered another drink but it never arrived. I understand its tough when places are busy but when we were there at 8.30 in the morning it wasnt all that busy. Yes it was starting to get busy when we left and i dread to imagine how this place coped then. Definately not a place i will take people to now for a meal like i have in the past

The private dining room was a real treat. Our waiter was fantastic, but I do think that when cutlery is not being used it should be removed as well as wine glasses that are no longer in use. The food could of been a little better, but we have set a high standard for private dining. I would also expect that when you have booked the private room that they would of had at least one bottle of desert wine in the place to finish off the night.

I have read a lot of the reviews and I’m confused with some people’s comments, did they go to the same restaurant!! Staff and management absolutely fantastic could not do enough We had the set menu, best value ever so much food the only one I did not like was the calamari but I don’t like calamari any way so what still had great food in all the other dishes Wine and beer very reasonable priced considering the location Overall will go back every time I’m in Cairns 2/3 times a year 👍🏼😎🍻

Had the $20.00 lunch. Can highly recommend it. Great food, good serving size and the bonus of a drink included. Cannot speak highly enough of our waitress Erin. She was the best. Will definitely be back.

Got food poisoning from the cold seafood platter and ruined my weekend up in Cairns. Was bed ridden for the whole weekend. Will not recommend to others and will not go back after my experience.

Always 5 star and pet friendly too boot so we can take our pups for a walk and relax on the grass with a glass of wine well done guys keep up the great work it's our favourite place on the water
Louise Murray
future customers take note do not waste your time and money as it's definitely not worth it. ... Not only was this the worst meal I have ever had but what was worse the customer service especially from the manager was not only unprofessional but disgraceful. .. i would never recommend this restaurant to anyone

Great place, great staff!! I keep coming back it is by far the best restaurant bar in Cairns!!

On holiday in cairns and disappointed with the Monday buy one get one free from the bar menu Firstly staff didn't seem confident in what was exactly on offer after asking 2 different staff members you can't actually order two meals from the menu !!!!!!!!! After 15 minutes of chaos we left and went to another venue
Krys Smith
There was a group of 14 of us & when some our group complained they were too hot as the sun was shining on them, the staff kindly moved us to another table The $20 lunch special including a drink was good value I had the panko crumbed coral trout which was delicious!
Jenny Meredith
The food quality and atmosphere were great, but couple of times our deep conversation was interrupted but the waitress reaching across our faces to top up water, instead of accessing from the side of the table. It didn’t spoil the night but a little more service etiquette would have made it perfect!
Stephanie Sweet
Food was good when we got it(1.5hrs for pizza) no napkins very slow waitress waited 20mins for our drinks but very cranky as they did not disclose the $15 public holiday surcharge as We are new to Qld and didn’t think that was a fair thing to do coming from a Hospitality background all fees should be disclosed too bad if we only had enough money for the pizza! That would of been embarrassing!!

What a messy end to 2017. Went out for a lovely last meal on Wednesday night with a friend of mine before I had to get on a plane and head back to work. It was okay, he ordered steak, I ordered salmon. We had a lovely view of the water and it was a little romantic. What wasn't so romantic was getting a case of the good old food poisoning, 48 hours of vomiting, and $130 dollars later. so thanks salt house. It's been a shitty end to a shitty year.

My two friends and I had dinner here last night and I’m only just now able to put into words the amazing experience that we had. The cocktails were perfect (almost too easy to drink!), the food was unbelievable and the service was absolutely stellar - special thanks to our waiter Jack whose customer service was above and beyond. Will definitely be back on my next visit to Cairns.
Jamie Cox
Delightful food and top service by staff. Well worth a visit. Will definitely be back.
Donna Fadersen
Went last night, meat was chewy and tasteless , very low grade food and service for a very high grade price. Couldn’t believe the cost for such low grade. Won’t return.
Julie Millar
Very confusing place to order and collect a simple drink and simple food. Pretty ordinary service for a biggish price and yep, hard to find serviettes and cutlery. Sunday session is far from relaxing with blaring background music. It was a bit embarrassing when I dragged my friend down there for a pleasant evening to be disappointed all round. But it is a pretty spot, so I guess they won't go broke yet.
Eric Michael Harrison
A very stylish and trendy bar.Pretty good atmosphere and music. Advertising 2 for 1 meals on a Monday (the day we were there) but they made the excuse that it is Easter Monday so they are not doing the deal! I pointed out maybe they should change the sign then. Mojitos were nice! Overall pretty nice place.
Lulu Roseman
The pits from hell! I would rather stick needles in my eyes than endure this vile place that has the vibe of a slaughterhouse and the colourful language to match! Not to mention the staff infighting and rude service. Avoid!
Mikayla Young
Had our birthday event here today for a high tea. I really enjoyed it! The waiter was lovely and I think we were catered for very well. Yummy selection of food and drinks, beautiful views and atmosphere! Thank you!
Chris Francesca Wyckmans
Bad service waited so long for our meal. Not a good experience as we had young children with us. Always been happy in the past but we won't rush back.
Mohindra Kumar
Very nice place, lovely environment, great music, good food and drinks. Would love to visit again and again.
Jan Romanowski
Loved the ambiance of the restaurant layout and the food was superb..... I had Atlantic salmon with a red curry sauce.
Natalie Mawer
Great venue for drinks and dancing but the restaurant is overpriced and underwhelming. Stick to the bar menu.
Joseph Winika
I can walk in here any day of the week and always feel welcomed by the staff and management. I do know most of the staff there, but when you have people, who don’t know you, give you the same service and chat as the ones you do know, you get the feeling that’s how they treat all their customers. Keep it up!
Susan Stephens
Very nice food and great service.. lunch menu was interesting and a little different..
Paw Kappel
Terrible barbecue chicken. The chicken tasted as if it was boiled (not completely finished) and the orange sauce that it was drowned in was so sweet that it almost hurt your teeth. Very unflavoured wines at a ridiculous price.
Jonathan Voulgaris
Only had drinks here<br/>But as far as I’m concerned there isn’t a better venue itself in cairns the city<br/>Partner enjoyed her cocktail and I couldn’t go wrong<br/> with a vb<br/>Place had a great vibe and staff were friendly and accomodating <br/>Will come back to eat for sure
Crystal Lee
Good views. Okay coffee. Average brekkie. Mediocre coffee. Lacklustre service. I’d like to come again for maybe lunch/dinner to try the food and enjoy the views again but there are many other better places for breakfast.
Tim
Fantastic views and location down by the water.<br/><br/>Greeted by friendly staff on the way in and given our pick of tables <br/><br/>Recommend getting in for sunset!<br/><br/>Both had the steak special which was a tab expensive when adding sides on but cooked well and filling
Jade Holloway
Great vibe and layout. Pizzeria was a good choice for a Friday night feed with afew drinks. Pizzas didn't disappoint. Highly recommend! Glad I checked this spot out while in Cairns.

Beautiful ambience and great expat crowd is what fills this place up. The cocktails are great and their food options are fantastic too.<br/>We ordered their signature espresso martini - they were slightly bitter but strong enough to get us happy!<br/>For dinner, which took a while to arrive, we had pork belly and fresh catch of the day(barramundi). The pork belly was perfectly booked and beautifully spiced. The fish was slightly disappointing as it tasted stale<br/><br/>Overall a great experience for a perfect fun.dinner with family and friends by the pier.
Ben Xie
excellent service, very fresh food ,nice atmosphere recommend the small seafood plate, totally enough for two, but I did by myself, hahahahha, very good , in front of the sea, anyway, awesome place, how you give them 1 star, those guys???
Teresa
Very cool ambiance. Friendly staff and interesting menu options. The salmon and seafood salad were very good and fresh, and the steak looked tasty.
Travelling-Foodscout
The salmon was cold and the seafood hot pot whilst being very tasty was not good value. The ambiance was good but the staff were spread thinly and the tables were situated very close to each other.
Y
Great food, great vibes and great service. The restaurant is in a great location for food and drinks. It is on the pricey side but you pay for good quality food. We had the rib eye and pork chop both cooked to perfection. Will be back.
World In A Bite
Overlooking the beach, this is a really good place to chillax & soak up the sun over a drink or two. Suitable for singles, couples and family with young kids 🤗
Jtogno
Affordable menu the strength of the place is the quality of the local produce<br/><br/>Good selection of wine by the glass as well, nearly all Australian open New Zealand wines

Food was average and expensive and whilst dining two extremely large rats ran through underneath our table and into the dining area. After notifying staff who didn't believe us a third rat appeared and ran under the deck seating in front of staff to which we were told there's nothing we can do they come up out of the ocean continually.
Waz From The East
Went for a drink Thurday ,<br/>Beautiful setting that's where it ends.<br/><br/>Worst Pina Coladas we have ever had and the most expensive, watery and tasteless, utter rubbish.
TotalAwkward
Salt house is a bar & restaurant that sits by the water. The decor is not for the accident prone with sections of water and flame, but pretty cool. It was unfortunate to be greeted at the entrance by the aroma of not quite fresh fish. We had an assortment of platters and bubbles including a pull apart, sweet potato fries, chips, wedges, meat and cheese platter, fried fish, crumbed chicken etc. it's a delight for those who love carbs, fried food and a good 2 for 1 special. <br/><br/>Even on a weeknight it gets quite busy so get there early to secure a spot if you have a larger group. Later, entry requires photo ID band waiting for it to match facial recognition software processed one at a time painstakingly by the bouncer. The drinks were good, including the cocktails costing any where up to $20. <br/>Staff were slammed when we went but service was good.<br/><br/>Also as part of a private group, the set up was a little awkward as the section divider also acted as the main table so we could only have 3/30 people at it at any given time. Random people also approached from the other side and had a nibble.
Butlmadd18
Overall the food was nice but we felt like it was a bit pricey, the waiters were friendly and willing to listen to advice, but they were a bit slow with the drinks. I loved the modern feel to it. If I went there again I would be more wise with my money, and maybe just go there for a light meal.
DianaW
We came here early for a coffee. Ordered flat whites for two hot & strong.  Service was appalling, coffee was plonked down so hard in front of us it spilled in the saucers by the grumpy waiter. Not surprising as the coffee was weak & watery with no body or flavor. Best thing about this place is the situation right on the water or maybe if you want drinks in the evening

Went here for a couple of drinks and tapas food. Happy Hour was good as drinks were $5 and the food was 2 for one plates. We tried the pull apart bread, tuna sashimi, squid and fried chicken. The food was all excellent. The location is great, just by the marina and they have music on Friday nights. We also tried trivia, but it was meant to start at 6 and didn't start until an hour later and the questions were extremely hard. A professional set up and books and powerpoint but poorly executed.

Salthouse has been one of the places I've visited most since I've been up in Cairns. Love the happy hour and Sunday sessions. The cocktails are delicious, food is great, the staff very attentive and friendly. Definitely worth a visit 😊

As we were staying at the Shangri-La, this was an easy destination for dinner. I loved the open plan dining area and was impressed with the service and food (the portion size for Hubby's pork dish was insane). We ended up waiting for our drinks once or twice, but overall this is the perfect spot for a casual meal with friends or family. I thought the prices were all very much in line with the location.

We came here for a drink to watch the sunset, it was such a lovely spot. <br/>The pub is really well done, you truly believe you are in holiday here. <br/>They have a drink special from what I could see every night. All of the staff gave a smile and a warm hello. <br/>

Fantastic! I'm always away for work, by myself, and looking for that perfect spot to have a quality meal and enjoy a nice view and a cool vibe. This was it. One of the top 10 steaks I've ever had, the ribeye on the bone was perfect. Seasoned and cooked as though the chef was in my head and knew exactly how a steak should be. The service was outstanding - I'm a difficult diner but both waiters could tell straight away that i wanted their recommendation and they didn't fail to deliver. They 'got' exactly what i wanted. On top of that, had a lovely chat with the couple who were on the table next to me. A friendly, unpretentious spot that seems committed to excellence. I'll certainly be back on my next trip through

I will go to bar next time I visit. A very nice place however I and my partner ordered steaks they weren't cooked well. We ordered rib and sirloin both medium rare. They came out more like blue not charcoal coated. I ended up vomit outside of the restaurant.
Graeme Clark
Cool decor but that's all they had going for them. Live music from inside the bar and the house music from the DJ outside was constantly clashing. Ordered a Hendricks and Tonic and waited 5 minutes for them to tell me they had no cucumber. What cocktail bar doesn't have standard garnishes? To top it off the tonic was flat. Worst g&t I've ever overpaid for. Avoid.

Went here last night following a recommendation from a friend. I decided to share the seafood platter with my partner. Although the seafood was cooked well, the curry underneath was way too overpowering and salty which ruined the taste. The waiters seemed flustered too- we had 2 different waiters asking us whether we were ready to order, despite already placing an order. Otherwise the ambience was quite nice.
Philippa Buchanan
Great service and excellent atmosphere! The marina location and open air design are perfect. It's a bit on the expensive side for the quality of food provided which is why I gave it 3.5. My cocktail was delicious (though 80% ice).
Food Adventures With AnnaJ
Im a regular at Salthouse for drinks and snacks but a couple of friends and I wanted a nice dinner. The place was relatively busy but it took about 10 minutes and 3 different staff members to decide whether there was a table for us. Once seated we ordered cocktails straight away and had water brought to us immediately. Our drinks weren't on the menu but came out pretty quick and were too notch. My friend and I shared the seafood platter and it was absolutely AMAZING!! Jam packed with about 8 types of seafood, all cooked perfectly and had a delicious thai inspired rice dish along with a nice little salad. So much value for money with this meal. The waiter was trying to be fancy with his plate carrying and knocked a few of the things onto the table, without much of an apology which was disappointing. Salthouse is in such a beautiful location with a great relaxed environment and the food was absolutely on point. Service does not match the standard of the kitchen

Was so excited to have a chance to go to Salt House again as have not been to Cairns for a few years Were not disappointed and ended up having three meals there including lunch Food was awesome Staff very friendly although maybe have just one waitstaff to each table as can get confusing for them and customers Just a great place great location Definitely be back

Went here last night to the bar section for dinner - great food and fantastic value for money. Would highly recommend. Also an excellent atmosphere

Awesome location next to the marina, close to the water and the start of the Esplanade, with superb vibe, awesome fitout, definitely a must visit place in Cairns! There are two areas, the more relaxed outdoor bar area with bar food (2 for 1 Mon-Wed so we got double the pizza and tacos) and the more upmarket indoor seated fine dining area. The whole venue was classy and relaxing. Our food was great, and perfect way to wind down after a day out at the reef!

Living locally we saw great reviews for the Salt House and we decided to go there for our lunch date.<br/>It was a bad decision and will never go again. It all started with the 23 minutes we waited before our order was taken.<br/>The $16.50 passion fruit, lime and Malibu drink that had so much lime it was not drinkable. There was not even a hint of passion fruit flavour.<br/>After finding out the menu had been changed this month, the food we wanted to order from previous pictures here weren't available. We then waited 26 minutes for our meals in a restaurant that was not even a quarter full! <br/>My DH ordered the cheeseburger meal which he said "Even Macdonalds sells better ones". I had the crispy Duck with Lime & Orange Vietnamese salad. MORE lime, too much lime, with a few pieces of nice cripsy duckThe salad part of the meal was saturated in it and between that, the drink, the cheeseburger worse than MacDonald's, the whole thing was a massive waste of money. <br/>If you want to pay for a nice view, this is your destination, but the service and food is not included.

This place makes you feel like you are in a tropical island paradise - which Cairns in July, when you're coming from Melbourne, basically is! The restaurant part of the Salt House is nice enough - the $20 lunch deal is best as otherwise it can be a bit pricey. I had the corn fritters dish, and my partner had the Thai chicken salad and both were great - with a glass of wine and such a nice location it was worth $20. the best part of the salt house however, is the bar part at the front. The cocktails are great, although a few of them are a bit sweet. The chips are incredible, as is most of the rest of the bar menu. All this, combined with the incredible atmosphere and location makes it the perfect place for lazy afternoon drinks.

Sunday session!!! Brilliant. We found this place by accident and it was great. Lovely set up with a cool bar / lounge feel. Band was great. Cocktails were all very good. Only negative is that they may need a few more bartenders to handle all the cocktails being ordered. It did take a little while at times. But overall will be the go to bar to chill out in Cairns. Reminded me of the Greek Islands.

We dined at the Salt House with a reservation on a Saturday night. The place was extremely busy but despite this, the service was exemplary. Our meals were delivered to the table perfectly spaced and our glasses were refilled without request. The pork belly in particular was a stand out dish. We loved the open sided dining area with views of the evening lit marina.

Went here while visiting Cairns as we were staying at the Shangri La Hotel next door. We had especially made reservations through the hotel as it was my birthday. When we arrived we were told preparations had been made for my birthday, but we never received any. The steak was chewy and when we sent it back, we were told by the waitress it was our fault because we had ordered it cooked medium. The manager was not trained to handle the situation properly and made things worse so we just asked for our bill and paid $135 for one of the worst dining experiences ever. Sent them an email 3 weeks ago and still have not received a response.

Great looking venue in the heart of Cairns. Enjoyed some sweet potato chips and drinks here on a hot Autumn day. Appears to be popular with the locals.
TT
Very nice venue, by the marina, spacious with outdoor sitting area. Great place for contain. Good food and decent service. Highly recommend for visitors of Cairns
Rogeritsbathtime
Really nice food. Had the seafood platter... super tasty and fresh. Maybe not the best i have ever had but by far the nicest i had in cairns. Great atmosphere too.
Alicia Meagher
Firstly I had booked a table for 8:30 I rocked<br/>Up on the dot to then be told that my table had been given away... Luckily they had a table for me to spare. The cocktails were great, we ordered the steak which was lovely the flavour was amazing and chips and salad were great too. I ordered the seafood platter which I didn't enjoy.... The quality of the seafood was quite appalling considering that the restaurant is located right on the water. Within 2-3 hours of me eating the seafood platter I had thrown up. Such a same I had travelled from Melbourne and remembered how great salt house was from my previous visit there.
El
Amazing location and vibe. We were here at 7am on a Saturday for breakfast and it was peaceful. Nevertheless the staff were very attentive. The French toast is to die for!! Very reasonably priced given its location and compared to Perth! Particularly considering there was a public holiday surcharge included too.
Deval Shah
Nice place located across cairns yacht club good ambience and music. Must visit place in cairns. Staff is very friendly and prompt.............

Had breakfast here. Place was amazing food and coffee was great. Worth a visit. Going to have dinner and some drinks later during our stay.

Aleays a great restaurant. Cooks our fish that we caught on our fiahing charter for a great deal! You should ask the head chef for this if you are in the area! Amazing meal!

Incredibly slow bar service when surprisingly only mildly busy. Perhaps the restaurant is better?? Average food. Nice setting/ atmosphere but that's about it.
Mal
Ordered the Sea Food Platter. <br/>The Barramundi was raw<br/>Drinks service was very slow. <br/>It's not a busy night. The beer at the outside bar wasn't cold. I had to wait 20 minutes for an espresso martini.
Carla C
Great location and awesome interior style. Food was good but service really slow. Catered for gluten free and meal sizes were generous. Coffee OK
James Tran
Came here for a Saturday breakfast. Needed a juice and the glasses are very tall! <br/>It's quiet in the mornings and so service was very fast and attentive. Food came out well presented and also tasted well.

Located at Marina Point, Salt House offers stunning views of the ocean, marina and surrounding mountains. Add to that professional service, elegant atmosphere and a $28 lunch set menu, this place makes for a pleasant dining experience.
Charliejas
Great location. <br/>Was hard to read the menu with the lighting Staff were attentive. Found the choices quite limited though. Not too much seafood which you'd expect from this area. Can stay home if I want pie or lamb shoulder. Oysters were nice but not hot enough. I ended up choosing chimichurri prawns but were overcooked and too much rocket in the salad.

Went last night for dinner (Monday night) The waitresses served is with a fast no messing about type attitude. We weren't offered more drinks until about 35 mins later when the waitress returned to apologise for the wait on our food. The water was topped up then which I was thankful for because by this time I was parched. The food finally came about 50 minutes after we ordered! The food however was amazing!! My partner had the fillet which was cooked to perfection, tender and lean with a unusual but gorgeous mushroom sauce. I had the fish of the day which was crispy skin salmon, again cooked to perfection!! The meals were a bit small and we were left wanting a bit more but decided we'd go because the wait put us off ordering dessert. My partner had been here before and was impressed, which is why we came back. All in all the food was awesome they do however really need to work on the wait times and the service. The atmosphere is fun and fashionable.

Right out by the water, open air and great set up, it was quiet the days we went and had a lovely atmosphere. 2-4-1 bar meals Monday to Wednesday night, food was good, drinks were good.
Norts
Went for drinks a couple of times during our stay in Cairns, didn't eat there but the drinks side of things was good! There is a room near the bar area that they appear to leave the rubbish in, at least that is what it smells like when the staff keep opening the door! On the evenings we were there we saw we were not the only ones that noticed. Plenty of events such as music and trivia to keep you amused there too.
CairnsLocal
Opt for the bar meals- more consistent. The restaurant has always been a gamble with muddled frustrating service, and too many mistakes - eg telling you with gravitas that the tuna will be cooked rare....then it is delivered overlooked, dry and inedible!<br/>The location compensates for the terrible slow service for drinks at the bar too. As I local I take visitors there for the ambience, but have given up on the restaurant
Veggie
Veggies don't go here!. All the meals are tiny and very overpriced. No vegetarian or vegan option at all (and staff grumpy and not willing to accommodate, you'll end up having a tiny side of veggies and going home hungry). Great place for a happy hour drink on the waterfront, but go elsewhere for dinner.
Chris
Disappointed. Service was B grade, paella was raw, took a little long between drinks. Was asked to move on as we were taking too long. Great environment, location and ambience, just can't back it up.
Vanillaslice
A little pricey, but good food and a good atmosphere. Love their cocktail menu :)
Kazbar1981
Food was terrible. This restaurant touts itself as being "fine dining" but it was anything but. I ordered the Vegetable curry, which should be called broccoli with rice. It was tasteless and boring. I couldn't even persevere through eating it. I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt and maybe it was just one bad dish on the menu, so I ordered dessert because I was starving. Can't go wrong with a sticky date pudding...right!? Well, apparently you can. It was so dry I could eat about 2 mouthfuls. <br/><br/>Overall a very disappointing experience. On the positive side, the mojitos were good. I recommended just coming here for drinks, skip the over-priced and extremely disappointing food.
Benjamin Cole
Although the food is good, the prices are expensive. I thoroughly enjoyed my barramundi dinner, and then service was good. However at the end of the night we (as a group of 10 people) were slugged with a $2.50 charge each because we split the bill. This is only a new change, but it is enough to say I will not eat there again while that is in place. As a large group, there would be very few people able to pay $450 outright on behalf of he group so splitting the bill is common. They claim its because it takes too much time to do, but all this charge is going to do is stop people going there. Where nearly every other quality restaurant in cairns allows you to do so, it means I will be looking elsewhere now to dine in big groups. I've never written a review for a restaurant before, but this soured the night for me so I needed to say something. I hope they get rid of this.
Kristin
Simply incredible!. This place was amazing. I had the Angus steak, my husband had the vegetable curry and our friend had the lamb and all of our food was cooked perfectly. Our server was great and my amaretto sour was divine. No complaints. Great ambiance. A must try while you are here!
BonVivantVoyager
Busy place but great service. We had hoped for dinner in the restaurant which was booked for a private function so we had to order from the bar. We were able to run a tab so we were happy. The bar was quite busy but the staff were experienced and friendly so we were not disappointed. The bar menu had some limitations for my gluten free friend but great fries which she could eat so all good in the end.<br/><br/>The atmosphere here is fun and trendy and there was live music earlier in the night. This seemed to be the place to be on a Saturday night in Cairns.

What an amazing spot for a Friday afternoon drink! I loved the atmosphere with live music playing as the sunset on a beautiful Cairn's winters (summer) evening. You must try the Caprioska, it is so delicious. The snack style food that we order was really disappointing though...S&P squid was rubbery and lacked the freshness that we have come to expect. The bruschetta was hard to eat, with massive chucks of everything piled on top of what I considered stale bread. We decided to cancel our late night booking for mains as the snack/share food was prepared by the same kitchen staff. We will definitely return to drink the arvo/night away, however not sure if I would mark it on the 'To Do' list for eating out in Cairns.

Nice setting, poor customer service. Very nice location but unfortunately for us that's where the positives end. Our group was seated in the main dining area, waitress was okay friendly wise however had no idea about any of their drinks- had to come back twice to see if they stocked the drinks we ordered (a wine and a beer pretty basic stuff) & also was unable to recommend any white wines. Several extra people joined us than we had originally booked for and they where unable to fit us in the restaurant so we decided to move out to the bar, as I was paying the bill for our drinks the male waiter then had a go at us about not eating. Ended up eating in the bar area and the food was not bad but overall the whole experience was not what you would hope for from a high end restaurant

Lovely food excellent work by the chefs however portion size on mains is tiny! The worst is paying top dollar for small portions then having to get Macca's on the way home - disappointed!

Great food and great service - Highly recommended. Nothing but praise for the food and the staff. Party of 4 all with different dishes and we could not fault it. Great flavours, well presented with courteous staff on what was a busy night for them.<br/>Best entree of Oysters Kilpatrick, Szechuan Lamb I have ever had topped off with a plate of desserts to die for.<br/><br/>Not sure what the bad reports were on previous posts but highly recommend.

Balinese oasis in sunny Cairns. Every time I go to this bar I am reminded of Bali - lovely relaxed atmosphere, long comfortable couches, beautifully timbered decor, and even reasonably priced drinks (3 mid-shelf spirits cost only $24) The food is always fresh and delicious - I recommend the rice paper rolls!

Great food, but dont go thirsty. After unsuccessfully trying to book to get into three other restaurants our group of eight settled for the Salt House. We were greeted and seated pretty quickly without too much delay, however none of the waiter staff offered or noticed that we didnt have any drinks. After several attemps we finally caught one of their eyes and summoned them over to the table. Two of the ladies got their wine within 60 sec, but the rest of us waited for at least another 10 min.<br/>The meals were excellent and not too much of a delay considering the place was pretty full, but our second attempt to get another round of drinks was even worse with at least a 15 min delay.<br/>The waiteress apologised prefusely but the bar staff seriously needed a quick up the rear.

Cocktails are good and reasonably priced. Scallops were awesome as was the beef cheek for main course. Service was faultless. An all round winner. Would definitely come back again.

No complaints here. Great spot to sit outside on the lounges and pick at a few tapas while sucking a cold one back. Sampled half a dozen of their tapas and they were all fine. Can't comment on the more formal dining experience people were having inside, but as far as a bar goes, couldn't really fault it.

Under New Management Sign Required. I am not even going to begin with the negatives, because the list is too long. You just have to have a quick read through the historical problems from everyone, disregarding the fake positive reviews via staff and friends. The actual location and venue is perfect as is the view. But that's where the irony is in a view looking out to find somewhere pleasant to dine without the attitude and ridiculous excuses about why the problem is not theirs. Start to listen and ask a few questions and restructure with appropriate staff and you may survive and flourish with great reviews. Very sad and inappropriate service supervisor who could not care less how he treats customers.
Cafesociety
Fabulous location. Lavish decor. Friendly staff. Food was delicious and serves generous. This restaurant has everything except a dress code. T-shirts and thongs drag the experience down.

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL and DISGUSTING!. We had booked a group dinner at the Salt House on Friday night for a birthday. When we booked we were told every single person had to be there on time and that we had to make sure ALL the people ordered mains and drinks. <br/><br/>Anyways, we ordered as a group, some people didn't get entrees some people did. Our bread was completely stale, half not eaten as it was so chewy. Our mains all came out separately, with 10 minutes separating some of our meals. Half were finished before the rest. <br/><br/>I ordered the pasta, ordering a main size whilst my friend ordered the entree size, when we (finally) received our meal (after an hour of waiting) we started to eat, noticing that the entree and main ($10 difference) were exactly the same size. My friend began to eat and noticed a horrible taste in his pasta, 2 minutes later I had the same thing as well. The taste of mortein somehow being sprayed into our mouth. We sent the pasta back and was told that management would be informed. Another friend had ordered a medium well steak, received a half burnt on the inside and raw in the centre steak with incredibly un fresh garlic that was blue and green. <br/><br/>Management or anyone in that fact never came over to apologise or to offer us an ulterior dinner. When we decided that enough was enough we got up to paid, waited 10 minutes in line to pay and then asked for the manager. the manager was incredibly rude, said to us that nobody else complained tonight and still expected us to pay for half of our meals. Every time I had something to say he had an excuse, for example with everyone receiving their meals differently his response was that they went through as 2 different orders, because there was 2 different tables (there was 3 actually) even though he knew we were eating as a group and all ordered at the same time. Absolutely disgraceful service and food. We never wanted to go here, but unfortunately the birthday girl was set on salt house. I've never had a good meal, or ever heard good things about salt house. Save your money (because it's overly expensive, $70 just for a horribly cooked steak) and go to McDonalds. You'll get a much better meal there.<br/><br/>My partner works in the concierge department in the pullman international, they will definitely not be seeing any customers from any of those hotels anymore, as he will notify every head concierge owned by Accor about this experience. <br/><br/>Absolutely unsatisfied, the worst dinner experience of all of our lives..

Booked for a midweek lunch, was busy but not packed. Service was attentive and food was great, especially the lunch specials. But the best part of this restaurant is the open air setting and decor. Great views over the marina and coastline. Would recommend
Jarrad And Kate
Great food, decor fantastic and beautiful views. Service was better than I thought it would be after reading other reviews, maybe it's a pick of the draw with what backpackers are in town at that time. Would visit again but a touch expensive

Kitchen Closed. We really wanted to eat here - I was keen to try their rather interesting steak menu. Being seated at 1.40 by a friendly but apparently distracted waitress and getting menus and water, we were then left for 15 minutes. Since our server seemed to have disappeared we flagged down a waiter who informed us that the kitchen closed at 2pm and we were unable to now order food. <br/><br/>Disappointed we trailed off to other open restaurants!

Beautiful restaurant on the water. Great bar and cocktails. Nice meals. I've had the tuna, salmon and barra- all lovely. One of the only redeeming features of Cairns.

Great cocktail. This place was jumping on a Saturday night! Enjoyed a delicious cocktail - recommend "Mafia Princess". Friendly bar staff too.

Where do I start? Don't know how this place is still open! After dining here Sunday morning for breakfast, we left angry and hungry. As we sat down, we ordered two coffees and a juice. After half an hour we received the coffees, flat white was spilt and soy latte was burnt. No one came to check on us, so we got up to complain about the coffee and ask where the juice was. I asked for a replacement for the latte, eventually another coffee arrived but it was wrong. Finally after 45 mins we get the juice which was 1/4 juice, 3/4 quarters water. After getting up again to ask where the food was, we are told 5 mins. We receive a complimentary fruit platter which was nice of them however the fruit was not fresh. It's been an hour and we finally get the food which we barely ate, it was not good! The bacon wasn't cooked, the bread wasn't toasted, the sausage was pink inside. My sister asked for no spinach, when we turned the bread over it was green so they obviously took the spinach off the dish. We left after 10 mins of sitting there with the food, not happy at all. None of the staff ever asked us what the problem was, they just let us sit there. It was handled incredibly badly and clearly the staff, management and kitchen need better training.

Long Wait. Dined here on a Saturday night with a party of 10. After some confusion with the booking we were shown to our table. First drinks delivered to our table were not our order. Service was slow and our waitress seemed very confused and flustered. The restaurant was very undermanned and music very loud..not the ideal ambience. Drinks took forever, as did the food with an hour wait between entrée and mains. Only savour for me was the food (and company) Had the scallops and pork belly for entrée and the poached bugs for main..lots of flavour. When it came to pay the bill, there were 2 extra drinks which were not ours Would recommend this place if you are happy to WAIT!!

Great food, fantastic ambience. Duck was delicious, lamb was very nice and ginger Creme brûlée was a great end to the night. The staff went to an extra length to for the affogato. A great night all around. Highly recommend it.

There 7 of us rocked up for dinner on Sunday. The place wasn't full and the pathetic guy made looked like it was fully booked. Took him 10 mins to figure out a seat for us. We sat down and the clueless waitress asked if we were ready to order. We said we hadn't gt the menu and she looked very confused. She came back later asked we were ready to order drinks. My sis said we don't have the drink menu can we get one?? The look on her face was confused. We ordered our food and waited an hr for them to come. Not impressed. A table of 2 already walked out. The food were nothing fantastic. My seafood platter was not that great. We paid the bill and was told later that they forgot to include the wine!

We booked Salt after searching for good restaurants in Cairns. I would not recommend this place. Service was as good as backpacker labour can get, with staff that were highly unaware of the food menu and drink menu. After our new waiter came up to inquire how we were and what we ordered. . Service was horribly slow waiting over and hour between entree and mains only to be told that a 300g steak takes a while as an excuse for the delay. Food was ok ambiance was ok. Would not go back.

I dined here a year ago to superb food and attentive service. On My return visit, I dined solo, was seated at the rear of the restaurant, surrounded by screaming children (why anyone would bring 4 children under the age of 5 to an upscale eatery beggars belief). Once seated, the wait staff simply forgot about me, despite several efforts to attract their attention, I was left for almost half hour before I summonsed a staff member to take my order, where I was greeted with 'sorry, love'. Love? If I wanted this affectation, I'd grabbed a burger at the Greasy Spoon. Don't bother with this establishment. It's overpriced, with too much attitude, average food and awful wait staff.

I went to salt house on my weekend visit to cairns. My friends and I enjoyed it so much that we went back 3 times!!! The seafood platter was the best I ever had and amazing value for money. As was the cheese board! A beautiful setting looking out over the marina. Get involved!!!

Best cocktails in town! But that doesn't make up for the fact that the food portions are small and expensive. Some wait staff are extremely helpful, and others pretend they can't see you

New to Salt House. I just moved to Cairns and my cousin recommended we check out Salt House - it is now my favourite venue in Cairns! The space is fabulous with some really cool things such as the day beds or the little pools throughout.<br/>We had the $28 lunch option - 2 courses with a glass of wine - value! <br/>Service was great too. I'm now becoming a regular - can't speak highly enough of my visit.

Fantastic venue. I recently visited Salt House at the pier and what a fantastic place! The venue is incredible inside with pools and lots of open space. <br/>Food was great, tasty and good value for money and the service was friendly and fun. Highly recommend!

Great Night. Wow, just got back from a fantastic night at Salt House. Great atmosphere, sensational food (every course) and despite some of the other reviews the service was some of the best I have ever received. Special thanks to our Belgian waiter Nicholas, he made an already great night even better. Will be going back every time we are in Cairns.

A lovely spot that is looking a bit down at heel. I had to wash my hands after reading the bar menu -- it was that sticky. The 'local' fruit platter I had for breakfast was composed almost entirely of fruits that aren't even grown in this *state* (oranges, apples, raspberries!?) and was sadly missing the local stars (mango, passionfruit, lychees... where where you?)<br/>Still -- this remains one of the best locations in Cairns, and one of the few places where you'll actually feel like you're on a tropical holiday.

Went here about a week ago with my bf, expecting a great dinner<br/><br/>We were seated indoors, even though we asked twice to be seated outside - they said there was no room but we could clearly see empty tables...<br/><br/>The only positive thing i have to say is that the scallop with risotto and the pork belly entrees were delicious<br/><br/>The cold seafood platter for two was very average and when i asked for garlic butter to flavour the bland seafood, i was given whipped butter and roasted garlic with an excuse from the waitress saying that was all they could do - sorry, i didnt know garlic butter was so hard to make...<br/><br/>Some of the staff also was pretty average and not very friendly<br/><br/>Overall i would not recommend this place nor would i return and prices were not worth it
Michelle
Where to start we were placed near the kitchen where the smoke from kitchen is nasty and smelly. We waited 20 mins for drinks another 20 mins for starters and after 45/50 mins for our mains we asked our waiter to cancel our mains and we would pay for what we had he went off and came back to ask if we had had our mains!!! Someone else dealt with our bill and although they gave us a discount we will not go back. If you can deal with the above the food was good

Great looking place and location obviously makes this place busy but that's about as good as it gets, Service is terrible and there cocktail wernt even drinkable. Won't be back, need to lift there game!

Great venue and good food. Waitresses were lack luster though. I couldn't see a hovering manager like a place of this calibre should have. Mentioned cracked beer glass to waitress who didn't say a word when she took it away. <br/><br/>So close yet!

Great food, great service!. Fantastic dining experience! One of the best nights out Ive had in a long time

Great location but over rated. Especially the service and the waiting time is very poor. There is much better value for money in Cairns.

Inside are wooden floors, walls and ceiling, with a myriad of matching lights hanging from chains of varying lengths, their reflections in the high windows adding further drama to their magical effects. The open kitchen is visible from the restaurant with a huge circular copper extractor above the bench and cooking space, dividing the two area's. The kitchen walls are tiled with fabulous red miniature tiles, and the bench fronts are sheathed in crumpled netting with lights behind them creating another very striking feature. The largest part of the restaurant is outside on wooden decks, overlooking the marina at one end and dense tropical greenery at the side. Cream leather bench seats create a half wall and very comfortable seating and in the centre are dark cane sofas with deep cream cushions. A large bar presides over illuminated ponds, surrounded by cube stools. Batterned ceilings, soft lighting and candles complete the romantic, Balinese atmosphere. <br/>From an excellent menu we enjoyed for starters Oysters Kilpatrick- chorizo, sweet and sour onions, glazed with parmesan cheese, served on a narrow white rectangular plate, displaying the oysters to perfection. Along with a seafood bouillabaisse, herbed local redclaw,  roasted garlic croute, herb oil, micro herb salad. Both these plates were delicious, prepared and presented to perfection. For mains we had a chilled seafood platter, king prawns, moreton bay bugs, natural oysters, sweet cured ocean trout, crab tzatziki and avocado tian, local red claw, wasabi tuna, horseradish and dill aioli, creating a very appealing dish<br/> The other main was, a salt mash herb crusted lamb rack, with potato and rosemary gratin, mustard glazed dutch carrots, mini gel, port & red currant jus, absolutely divine. For deserts we chose a Salt House dessert tasting plate, again a real pleasure for the taste buds. While dinning met a much travelled, Western Australian entrepreneur who believes this place is Cairns' finest.<br/> A stunning location, with fabulous food, ensures the continuing popularity of this establishment.

All the ambience and atmospher you imagine on a trip to FNQ. The setting is perfect. I started off with a cocktail -The Concumbre, a gin and cucumber concoction that I decided I needed to resample (even if the bar staff were a bit cheeky). For dinner I settled for a wagu flank steak, was lovely and also the stuffed mushrooms. The best report however was from one of my companions who had the beef cheeks "to die for, melt in thy mouth, best I've had". Can't wait to go back.

Great night out. Good food, lovely ambience, fab tunes. Nothing bad to say... My favourite night in Cairns. Would go back again.. And again :-)

I love this place. We make sure we come here every time we are in Cairns. Today was perfect(as always). Perfect food, perfect wine and perfect waitstaff!!!!!

Love this venue – choice of bar menu with low stools around the bar area both in & out door seating or the restaurant with generous size tables and sooo comfortable chairs. Sunday special from the bar were $10 mojitos and $5 coronas, coronas not cold enough to stand up to the warm day however the mojitos were GOOD! The kitchen were obliging with some menu changes swapping the crumbed fish with chips & salad ($26) for the fish of day – grilled Bara instead with chips and salad (charged the $32 price fish of the day price). Very generous serve of the chips as a side also. Friends ordered the burger & questioned where the capsicum was however it was a capsicum relish, which was fine, friend had miss-read the menu. The waitress then bought out some slices of capsicum on her own accord to go onto the burger. Anyone could easily spend the afternoon lazing away here! A must visit when in Cairns.

Great professional service, food is really good and is presented very well. Bar is nearby so you can have a few beers/cocktails before or after dinner. Makes for a good night out for an occasion. First on our list when planning a night of fine dining with a drink or two.

A huge disappointment. Waiter got the order wrong and apologized but we ordered the fish for two and got the seafood platter which was also a disappointment. I thought the seafood was border line acceptable.

We were recommended by our friends cousin today to dine here and I have to say it was a highlight of our weekend!! We thought Cairns was tired and just lacked 'something' until we found Salt House. An energetic, livley atmosphere with friendly staff and fresh tasty food. This establishment is a credit to its owners, staff and Cairns and I look forward to my next visit. Well done all.

Great Food and Service. Went in to Salt House for NYE it was hands down the best place in Cairns. Music was amazing the food perfect. Bar staff were all fast and kept up the standards you would expect in a venue like this.<br/><br/>The owners should be proud to have such an incredible team!

Hire some new staff!. We 'dined' here on a whim for lunch and all I can say is that the staff did not do the meals any favours.......To the bar staff, so sorry that we interupted your conversation and so sorry that we wanted to place an order. After 30 minutes of waiting (for 2 burgers......not anything special) we watched our food get cold as it sat on the pass and the staff again ignored it......We had to physically tell them that it was ready, and received an eye roll for our troubles..<br/>sorry, I thought I was the customer and you were employed to serve me? Oh yeah, the fresh seafood arrives frozen...we witnessed a delivery and the crates of pre- cooked prawns and prepared fillets......NEXT!

Went here for dinner on our last night in Cairns on the recommendation of the concierge in our hotel. Turned out to be a great meal - the only caveat would be to avoid here if you need to eat and run as the kitchen were slow in getting the meals out. The menu runs to between 3 and 6 items per course with some interesting items done very well - a refreshing change from some of the mega-menus we saw elsewhere. Seafood was absolutely fresh and the service was attentive. The attached bar ups the pace and volume later in the evening and has a good cocktail menu. Definitely worth a visit.

Great cocktails, good food, free wifi available, ambient. Spent a Friday night here and today worked from the restaurant, mood changes considerably and has suited me.
Natalie Frolla
Do not go here if you're hungry! Takes an hour for food to come out! Plus minuscule servings. Over-priced.

Second time we have eaten here. Great fresh flavors, happy, attentive service and the view is awesome( see photo)

We had a very enjoyable meal here. The seafood was fresh. Good wine list. Service very personable. Price very reasonable. Outdoor setting was really good. Thoroughly recommended.

...as we pondered how long the meal would take to arrive, it surprised us by arriving very quickly! We ordered the Fish and Chips and Lamb/Chorizo Burger -and decided to share both meals. Everything was presented nicely and looked appealing.

Salt House gives the option of choosing your plating option with the side dish selection of your choice, from 5 choices. I choose the mash and vegetable option, but there were some other tempting options too - like wild mushrooms with soft polenta, chives and porcini jus. Choices, choices, choices!
