Really enjoyed The Backyard. I was a bit hesitant after reading some of the reviews but I decided to give it a go myself. I booked with not much notice and they were more than happy to fit me in. Only a 5 minute walk from my hotel and it's in a really central spot. They were quite busy and I now know why. Service was great - my waiter was excellent and a great asset to the Business. Drinks were great - Lemon Drop Meringue can not be beaten! Delicious! Started off with sourdough & garlic butter - was nice and a big serving but the garlic flavour was not very evident. For my Main I chose Chicken Breast with Potato Gnocchi, Pumpkin and Pine Nuts... It was just excellent, could not fault a thing - yum! And then I got convinced into dessert but once again... no regrets! They were donuts with cinnamon sugar and two dipping sauces. One was lemon and one was a sort of cream. Overall had a great night and will definitely visit again next time I am in Cairns. Loved it and I highly recommend!

We ordered tuna watermelon and king fish as entree. Wagyu rump and surf and turf for main.
The wagyu rump is really yum! Medium rare is just medium rare. It was melting in my mouth! Love it
Since I am not a meat lover but seafood lover. This wagyu rump is really make me satisfied

beautiful food. beautiful company. beautiful times. COVID-19 vaccination certificates required for entry and the staff were diligent at checking. it made us feel safe during these times. i was very impressed and it made me feel like i could relax and be in the moment with my date. very grateful for the dining experience. had breakfast here too the morning after, it was a lovely time, relaxed atmosphere and great selection of hot and fresh food. the pastries! yum! if you're staying at shang-ri la, don't bother going anywhere else, you're sorted food-wise a skip from your room.

We took some interstate friends to The Backyard Cairns last night. The service from start to finish was fabulous. The staff quick and attentive. I had glorious home made Gnoochi with soft pumpkin pieces and pine nuts in a delicious creamy pumpkin sauce. I think it is the best gnocchi I have eaten in Cairns . My hubby had the spicy prawns cant remember what it was called. Absolutely delicious and our friends had fresh Barramundi on a salsa base. Accompanied by white wines- perfect and a great view out over the harbour. We will be back.

Friday 10/6/22 - after a disappointing attempt to have dinner at another restaurant (we left after trying to order for a long time), we wandered into The Backyard, where we were greeted by a very friendly and efficient staff. We didn't have a reservation, but they quickly made room for us.
Although the place was pretty full, they managed to attend to everyone in a timely manner and the food they served was excellent!
Special mention goes to the delicious Garlic Arancini and the Ahi Tuna Watermelon (pictured).
We will definitely return!

What a huge disappointment! We had Melbourne cup lunch upstairs in one of the ball rooms and it was fantastic, but the Back Yard well that’s a whole different story, Not sure if it was because it was a Wednesday and not a Friday or Saturday night or not but, I can only say the whole experience was dreadful, the Morton bay bugs were the highlight of the meals, oysters were old or not stored correctly, the prawns were cooked in freshwater and tasteless, if I didn’t know better I’d say they were imported, but I know they were Aussie ones just not cooked properly at all!, crispy squid, turns out it’s just soggy squid rings, The lobster was over done and chewy, the green vegetables were cooked perfect, not one person asked us how the meal was or “how was everything thing” I can’t see my self going back any time soon! Not what I expect at a Shangri-La, certainly not like the one at Mactan Cebu!

29/12/21 arrived at 1:15 for lunch, not busy at all, ordered & received food 40 minutes later 😡 only to get burnt chicken schnitzel… won’t be recommending this place …

Went with 6 friends. Was recommended. Very disappointed. Ordered the king fish. Bone dry on both dishes. The surf and turf was terrible. If we weren’t all so hungry we would have complained. But we were with the friends who recommended it. Coming from Melbourne where we are used to a very high standard we have come across some great restaurants in Cairns but this definitely wasn’t one of them. Don’t dollop a bit of Greek yogurt on the plate with the fish describing it as something else. Salad wasn’t dressed and even the chips were disappointing.

What an amazing place! Fantastic food, great prices, good array of choices on the menu. Oh almost forgot, the staff were over and above! Well done guys! If your looking at eating here, I strongly recommend that you come down, they won’t disappoint!

Highly recommend having lunch here. Great value, decent size meals and amazing service! I had the Grilled Atlantic Salmon it was delicious. Crispy skin to die for and a great garden salad with juice cherry tomatoes!

Buffet breakfast is the best value for money in town my family and friends always enjoy eating there plus the nice views over the harbour area. I highly recommend it.

Friends and i went for dinner a few nights ago service was awesome but the food was a bit average we orderd a sea food tower for 2 the calamari was stringy and the batter was powdery like it had to much flour the bugs and lobster were over cooked the only good thing were the natural oysters as for the pork and lamb meal we order lets just say i should of cooked my own home.

Went for breakfast this morning arrived at 9.20am to find we couldn't paypass (and I don't carry cards or cash). Then when we did eat about 10mins later, there was very little food left that was not replaced/topped up. What we did eat was very nice; however the whole service area was very messy and dirty. Alexis was your saving grace, he was friendly and attentive. Thank you Alexis you made our visit pleasant.

Service extremely poor, waited 25 minutes to get a drink, asked twice for our drinks after ordering. Food average. When our drinks arrived well after our meal was served, where then told the printer for drinks wasn't working. If we were told that in the first place, of course we'd be understanding. But too be just left there and asking twice for our drinks after previously ordered is extremely poor customer service. As locals l can assure we will never be back and telling other locals to give North a wide birth.... don't go there. In Cairns we are in a very fortunate situation plenty of other restaurants to choose from.

Today we had a booking for our daughters christening for 40 people... we turn up and they have not only ‘lost’ our booking but do not have enough food for lunch for that many people. The manager was beyond rude and we were left without a venue. I have had many functions here and today they ruined our party. Thank god Salt House could accomodate us all!
