Review Rama Thai - Camberwell

Friendly staff and nice food. Massaman lamb is really good with rice.

Beautiful authentic Thai coupled with excellent service. We enjoyed a few traditional dishes, definitely a stand out in the area. We will be back 😊👍

I've been coming to Rama Thai for years. It's a favourite for me as far as the food is concerned, but as far as the service goes, well that's another story. The restaurant isn't huge, and when really busy, it can seem cramped. But they've "modernised" it a little and it's a nice atmosphere. Parking is usually good, as it's on a stretch of Bourke Road where there's only a few other restaurants, and one of them isn't even open at night, so parking has never been an issue. I'd normally order Chicken Curry Puffs, but they only have vegetable ones. So I ordered the Golden Canape, which is deep fried marinated chicken on bread (toast) with a chilli sauce. Let me tell you; these are HEAVENLY. They are SO good. I haven't seen these on any other Thai restaurant menus (and I go to Thai places a lot). They're delicious and I could almost eat them as main meal too, lol. For my main, I ordered the Chicken Fried Rice (of course). This was delicious too and made according to my modification requests. I did find it bad that the waitress didn't know answers to questions about the food on the specials board. That's something staff should be trained in. And the food came out quicker last night than other times, because they weren't quite so busy. But the food is delicious and really tasty and if you don't mind slow service at times, this is a restaurant I highly recommend.

We had such a wonderful experience here for takeaway. Ordered the chicken massaman, pad see ew and grilled pork salad. The salad was exactly what I was craving! A little bit of spice, super tasty and refreshing. There was a small error with the order that we only realised when we got home, and the lovely waitress offered to replace the dish for us - which we gladly accepted the following week. Ordered the exact same thing again because we couldn’t resist! Can’t wait to turn Rama Thai into a regular spot.

Great range of tasty meals. And great value. Been there quite a few times now and quality and service is consistent. The lunch special menu is worth going for. My favourite is the pad ped chicken. The money bags are also great.

We have been going to Rama Thai for years and we have never had a bad meal. The staff are so lovely and go out of their way to make sure you are taken care of and they even remember our usual order. It is a local gem and you must try the chive cakes!!

I ordered takeaway via OZfoodhunter, which is indicated as the preferred method by the restaurant. Unfortunately my order was lost, and I ended up waiting an extra ~40mins than originally told. While the food was very good, the team at Rama need to resolve their operational issues if they hope to retain customers.

I got home delivery from Rama Thai tonight. I ordered a Pad Kee Mao with mixed vegetables and tofu. I was impressed with the range of vegetables included and I was happy with how spicy it was. The meal was delivered faster than expected as well. A perfect meal for a rainy day!<br/><br/>Also it’s cheaper to order off menulog than deliveroo for some reason so keep that in mind when ordering home delivery from Rama Thai.

Always great food and friendly service.   They'll take phone orders for pickup too.  I've bought  lunch there once a month for about 10 years now.

I swear it’s probably the best pad Thai I have ever had, just everything about it is amazing. Will definitely be going back ASAP it’s my favourite Thai place at the moment for sure

We’ve been going to Rama thai with Grandma & Grandpa for years. Best Thai in Melbourne. Pad See Eew and Pad Met chicken are delicious and you can never go wrong with roti n spring rolls!

I work next door so I went there for lunch. The Pad Thai was so sweet that I almost tasted like a dessert but it wasn't even the food that made me rate them 1.5. It was the guy taking orders. He was so rude that I almost left without ordering anything, however I was really hungry and I thought to myself that everyone could have a bad day. <br/><br/>I decided to give them a second chance and went there to order takeway for lunch. This time the guy was even more rude than before. I mean really, I just looked at him practically yelling at me  "YOU WANT TAKEAWAY OR WHAT?!" and I left. What a shame.

We have been coming here consistently for 12months now food always delish staff always lovely they also do a discount for takeaway which is just another bonus I would recommend <br/>

Good presentation and taste but servings are small and the place really looks good (folded napkins and the jazz). Not for Asians from Asia wanting to have damn good Thai food with proper portions without the fluff

Extremely slow service - don't eat in!Despite this being the closest restaurant to my home, I had never previously been there and I will definitely NEVER be going back! I took my two primary school aged children for an early dinner and after ordering and then getting our entree within a long but reasonable amount of time, we then proceeded to wait 55 minutes from when our entree was cleared for our main course to arrive! My children were starving hungry by this time but were too tired to eat the food that we had ordered and my main didn't arrive until much later again. At no point did the staff offer an apology and it was only after I complained that they suggested that the manager 'might' offer a discount. In the end I asked to speak to the manager, who approached me in very defensive manner and said 'I heard that you don't want to pay' to which I replied 'It is not that I don't want to pay, I just want you to understand what my complaint is' - he then said 'Fine you don't pay' and then walked away. I wasn't sure if he was coming back, so I waited a while and none of the staff returned, so we ended up leaving without paying. I have never in my life left a restaurant without paying before, and in fact was happy to pay for some elements of our meal, but I guess that the takeaway arm of the business is of higher priority to the manager and return local diners are of little consequence. With an outstanding Thai restaurant just down the road at the 'Little Thai Princess' where both the service and quality of food (and takeaway) are far superior, I know where I will be spending my money next time!

Although we live quite near here we had not tried Rama Thai until I recently learnt that they had a dish called Mee Grob on their menu. This is a beautiful Thai dish that is quite common in Thai restaurants in Sydney, but not readily available in Melbourne. We had this and another dish as a takeaway and it was ready very quickly and was delicious and a quite generous serve.<br/>Today we had lunch there and shared a Green Curry with prawns and a Chicken with Basil dish. The food was excellent with beautiful crunchy vegetables. The prices for their lunch menu are very reasonable, the portions again quite generous. The place has a very pleasant ambience. What more could we ask for? We shall certainly return very soon.

I ordered takeaway pork spring rolls and spicy noodles with chicken, chilli and basil and it was delicious. The noodles had the right amount of chilli and soy sauce along with crisp fresh veggies and tender chicken so good! Will definitely go back to try the other dishes.

Mind blown but how good the food here were! Stumbled upon this place on a casual saturday dinner just because we were lazy to cook and was craving for phad thai. Ordered the phad thai seafood, gra pow pork, vege tofu green curry and tom yum soup. They were all above average quality and decent portion as well! Service could be a bit faster but there were just so many takeaways so our orders were on hold for awhile. Very pleased with the food will def come back

Second time dining here because of their good food but what a let down this time around. We came when there's no other customers but the restaurant clearly prioritises take away customers more. Waited so long and seeing 5 other customers get their food for take away was painful to watch when you purposely came early to eat . Hangry !!

Consistent Thai.<br/><br/>Would I say this is the best Thai that I have had? No. But I will say it is good, and consistently delivers good Thai food. I often have Rama Thai as a take out option and I've never been disappointed. The currys are yum, special mention to the massaman. <br/><br/>If you're looking for a good Thai take out spot in the eastern suburbs, this won't disappoint.

Beautiful underrated Thai restaurant! We came here with the expectation of getting a quick cheap meal based on the prices and shopfront and were absolutely blown away with the quality received! The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, dimmed lighting and great ambiance! Our waiter was charming, friendly and so professional! The food was not only presented beautifully but the portions were huge! Very rare to get both and these guys nailed it! To top it all off the food was amazing! Everything you could ever want in a Thai restaurant!

I have been going to Rama Thai for probably 10 years or more and it has always been one of my absolute favorites. That was until a year or two ago, when I thought it had changed hands.... The food was no where near as good and the service was terrible. I didn't want to believe that my favorite restaurant was no more, so we occasionally went back just to be sure- luckily we did! It is back people, better than ever before!!!!!! It turned out that they had opened another restaurant and had taken the staff with them to set it up, but it negatively impacted this one, so they had called it quits before they had lost all of their loyal followers. Now all the original staff are back at Camberwell, and they are doing everything they can to win back their customers! A new fit out, presentation of both staff and food has improved tenfold and quite seriously the food even more amazing than before!! If you are someone who had lost faith (like we had), please go back, you will not regret it, and they would love to see you! They deserve to be full every single night, but I'm not sure people have got the memo that they are back- bigger and better! Spread the love people- you won't regret it!

Great value for money! Good service. The red duck curry was delicious and we order a very simple chicken and veggie dish for the kids and it was beautiful full of flavour. Great for a casual dinner

Spicy Hot & Sour Soup is my favourite here, Tom Yum Soup would be my second preference. It is a small cosy place but very busy at peak times, so trying to get a good table is paramount. There are also many take away customers coming in to the bar area, so distracting from a peaceful dinner at times. The food and service are good though, so do not be discouraged to try this one out if you like thai food. Soups would have to top the list on the menu here.

Fairly conventional but well done. Servings and price generous. Excellent stirfries in particular. Would be great if they introduced some more desserts

Best satay sauce that I've ever had! <br/>Beautiful food!<br/>Presentation was 10/10<br/>Nice cozy smallish restaurant <br/>Flavors very balanced but <br/>Coconut rice sticky, maybe bad batch but overall very satisfied with meals :)

"...GOOD FOOD ~ BIT OF A HICCUP WITH DELIVERY BUT WORTH THE EXTRA WAIT..."<br/><br/>Monday night, ordered take-away delivery for 2 from RAMA THAI, Burke Road, Camberwell - they arrived promptly.. but.. had left one of the 3 dishes behind - after profuse and sincere apologies, he hurried off to collect and bring back the missing dish..<br/><br/>We'd had a late lunch - not really hungry, but still wanted something tasty - ordered 2 serves chicken skewers with peanut satay sauce and 1 large container of coconut rice - very much worth the wait - the chicken was freshly grilled and tender - the skewers were generous - 5 per serve - the peanut satay was gorgeous - thick, well-balanced and spicy - not too sweet - the coconut rice was fluffy, well-separated and full-on with coconut flavour and fragrance - we really truly enjoyed it....!!<br/>Cost: $22.50 delivered.. How's that..!<br/><br/>It filled the brief perfectly - Can't wait to order again - This time we're gonna be hungry...<br/><br/>Ordered Monday 14 March 2016 for dinner.

We truly enjoyed our food. Fresh and delicious, delivered as per request. Shame so many other people had a bad experience with the delivery service.

I placed an order through MenuLog at 6:30 and was told it would arrive at 7:15. At 7:35 the order still had not been delivered and I called the restaurant and was told it would be another 10 minutes. At 8:05 the order had still not been delivered, I called them again and was told it would not be more than 5 minutes. Food finally arrived at 8:15. Some of the food was cold.

Had a bad experience with the staff, I was put off by the attitude of the service lady who seemed disinterested in the job she was doing. If they are running a restaurant for my money I'd rather spend it somewhere else who are genuinely running a restaurant with some passion for food. Food was ok, I was a regular to this place until my last experience, never going back again.

Not worth going.. The dishes were terrible, the green curry was tasteless and white, -way too much coconut milk and way too little spices. The beef salad was awful, with too much onions- the main vegetable- and beef was tough +++. absolute waste of money and a night out.
Foodlovesmymouth
For a change thought we'd try pad thai with vermicelli instead of rice noodles! Actually quite nice - love the blend of sweet, salty and sour flavours =) Would be nicer if the chicken breast pieces were smaller so they're not so tough though - like at One Thai =)

Love the crystal pad Thai

Been waiting for an hour and a half, hasn't arrived, got a call from the delivery guy saying he was here but he wasn't even in the street, he was lost. When he finally got here he only had 1 of the 2 mains we ordered and he tried to charge us for both. Completely incompetent. I don't care if the food is amazing, the service has been awful.

New Chef ???. Been going to this place for over 12 years and tonight order some takeaway and in short THE FOOD SUCKED.

User reviews. A dissappointing service from Rama Thai Ashwood. I had trouble ordering a delivery through menulog so I rang them directly and tried to organize a delivery. On menulog, the min order was $15 and also a 20% discount for the first order. The order I tried to place on menulog came to $21 something but when I placed the same order on the phone i was told it came to $30 exactly. When I asked how much each item was, the lady said the order came to $30 because I only ordered $27 worth so I had to pay for the $3 delivery. I changed an item to try to hit the mark and was told it was now $29, still $1 short. The lady was so inflexible about the rule made by themselves it was unbelievable. So I decided to cancel the whole order and did not bother to try anything from Rama Thai in the end. Quite pathetic really if you know the fact that menulog actually charges restaurants 10% on their sales so a phone order would have been better off for them. Didn't mind so much when they say the 20% discount was for online only but to insist a minimum order of $30 when online was only $15 was just dumb. I guess they prefer $21-$2.10 = $18.9 sales over $29. Wise choice!

HOPELESS!!!!! I ordered onl.... HOPELESS!!!!!<br/>I ordered online at 7pm for an 8pm delivery. I had to call at 8:20pm to see what was going on. They hadn't even cooked it yet and then told me it would be another 20mins. Their excuse was that they have been very busy. HELLO! I gave you 1 hours notice so don't tell me you've been busy. I can handle if it's 10 or even 15mins late but to not even have it started when they've had my order for over an hour. Who knows when I would have got it had I not called. Let's hope the food is good although I haven't got it yet so maybe I never will. If you can't deliver on time don't offer delivery!!!!!!

I had a stir fry noodles takeaway. It came with a lot of gravy, at least that was what I first thought. I poured it on to a plate and to my horror, the said gravy is oil! The whole bottom of the plate was flooded with oil. I threw it away. Very disappointed.

Dissapointing staff. The food was above average, however the lady who served us was not in a good mood for some reason. She never smiled and looked like she was angry all the time. This put us off. Even though the food was good, it was disappointing in the end.

Our favourite place to get delivery.. We've been in this house for almost a year and as we work through our menulog list this restaurant remains the stand out. Always spot on with their delivery time and we lurve the mixed bbq.
Milandro
Disappointing delivery. Admittedly your dinner's never going to be as good when it's been packed up and delivered that doesn't change some of the fundamentals.<br/><br/>Tom Yum soup was sort of there but missing a lot of the flavours that makes Tom Yum so good. Prawns with toast turned out to be prawns with one slice of cheap white supermarket bread, totally untoasted.<br/><br/>The worst thing was one of our hot dishes turning up cold and I mean chilled! The sauce hadn't even seen a pan...<br/><br/>Won't be going back.

A smile? A friendly recommendation? Courteous service? No, you won't find it here. We have been coming here, on and off, for over 10 years and sadly it has gone down, down hill and now lost it. Stir fries that are half warm/half cool, cold chicken, tiny serve of rice for $3 per person...we'll take our business elsewhere thanks.

Delicious food and excellent service. We are regulars at this restaurant and owner always makes us feel welcome. Good size portions and reasonable prices. Highly recommended.

Fantastic!. My brother and I got takeaway from here one night, Pad Thai with Roti/ Peanut Sauce. The peanut sauce was a little sweet however overall the meal was delicious! An absolutely bargain and extremely pleasant service. I have since been back several times and am always super satisfied!

I moved into the area two years ago and it has become our favourite local restaurant. A pleasant ambience, prompt service, food that is consistently good with ample servings (one dish is often sufficient for 2) and low prices for both food and drinks. I love the fried whole fish! Can't get better value!

Excellent. Been going sometimes bi-weekly for about four years now and have never gotten a bad meal. Floor staff can be a bit iffy sometimes but always pretty quick service and very tasty. Know the chef well who is very pleasant. The dishes don't need any additional flavoring or seasoning, such as salt, after being cooked as it is always full of flavor. Been very consistent for the many times my family has eaten there and don't see bad service ever. The warm beef salad is a must

Yummy.. We just returned from a quick dinner at Rama Thai in Glenferrie Road Hawthorn. We live close so the 2.5 k walk to and from there on a balmy night enhances the experience. It also burns off a few of the calories we ate! We shared chive and garlic pastries, chicken satays and roti bread for entrees. I then had a fabulous small prawn tom yum soup. Hot in temperature and taste but a bit salty. Mains were a great green fish curry with aniseed flavours and Evelyn had a chicken and vegetable stir fry, more Chinese than Thai for here as she cannot eat chilli or coriander. Nice fluffy jasmine rice for the sauces. Water glasses constantly being filled which is good as the food was a bit salty. Friendly and helpful service and VERY reasonably priced. Would recommend this to Thai food lovers in Hawthorn area.

Very attentive and conscientious staff. Quick service. Yummy fresh food tailored to your requests. And affordable!

Shocking service. I bought take away in an order that came to $80+. They forgot to give me my spring rolls. I rang up and they asked me to come pick it up. No apology. When I picked it up they just handed it to me. Again no apology.
BH
Brilliant!. Nicely ambient space, well priced and adequate service.<br/>But the real highlight was that all dishes were delicious, pad thai, pad pow krow and prawn crackers and peanut sauce. Very reasonable prices and generous potions. A winner. Will definately return.

Great food. Went with a group for a friends b'day and was happily surprised by the quality and value. Service was obliging even if one of the wait staff seemed to be having an off night. Overall I totally recommend this lovely little restaurant for great food.

Fresh Thai!. Went to this place during the week for an early dinner. There was only one other table which meant the service was quick. The food was very fresh standard local Thai, nothing spectacular....it is what it is! Took home some pad Thai, it was delicious. Happ to return.

Could do better. This place has decent if uninspiring food. Service, as others have pointed out ca be a bit hit and miss. My biggest gripe is that the staff seem quite miserable if you haven't booked in advance. There are normally no more than two other tables seated. When you ask for a table they always ask if you have booked (fair enough) but seem to frown when you reply 'no'. There is absolutley no verbal interaction with you during a meal and there are no smiles or pleasantries. Generally ok, generally reasonably efficient.....but just too dull. If it wasn't in walking distance i probably wouldn't visit again. They need to visit Trinitas as a customer to see how they should perform.
Athens
Food for the patient if you've got nothing else to do and have hours to wait on your dinner then this is the place for you. We had to wait 30mins after our entree for our main meal. Table next to us was also complaining about wait. Food mediocre nothing exciting. When asked where is our food waitress said oh I thought you weren't done with your entree!? Seriously??? Hmm nothing more to say.
JiTe
Disappointed. We went to its sibling restaurant before and it was a good experience. So we decided to give Rama Thai a go. The ambience was a bit too dim but it didn't bother us too much. The waitress could not even recommend us anything and the reason she gave was because she has been eating it everyday so nothing is special to her anymore - very funny but quite frank (and I think I have the same thought after having the dishes now)<br/> It took them a while to serve our dishes despite there arent that many customers and all the tables had their food served. The Tom yum did not taste like it was made from scratch but it was probably one of the nicer dishes we have ordered. The grill combo was nice but the deep fried fish was a bit too sweet and it doesn't feel much like a Thai dish. The pork skin salad was very dry and sweet too.<br/><br/>Overall the dishes have too much sweetness and too strong flavor. It was out of balance and I felt disappointed. It was certainly not a Thai cruisine that I was expecting....
Heather
Yum yum! Really like this place! And cheap too! Massaman could have had a tad more flavor but otherwise, excellent!
Local
Good food, really reasonable prices. Went for lunch, and the food was really tasty, really well-priced, and the staff were very pleasant. The food took a little while to arrive, but it was peak lunch time on a Friday and all tables were taken, so very undestandable. Would definitely recommend, and will be back regularly.

Service with a smile. A good selection of dishes- Love the deep fried snapper and prawn salad- so fresh and full of flavour with the coriander and lime. Somewhere to visit when the tastebuds are singing for Thai cuisine.
Moon Boots
Just go!. Delicious! The chicken in a basket is divine! Why oh why did I not know about this place earlier!

My parents wanted to take me out to dinner for my birthday on Sunday night. As sweet as they are and as good as their intentions were, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes when they suggested La Porchetta in Greensborough and Supper Inn as two possible dining
