Review Short Black Cafe - Camberwell

Dylan J
One of the best cafes in Camberwell. Excellent coffee (and latte art 👌), delicious meals and great service. Highly recommended.

Excellent coffee, some healthy options in the menu and most importantly, dog friendly. 5 Stars for coffee and 4 Stars for food. Great friendly service. I will try the Barista Breakfast next time

VERY impressed! Stumbled across this hidden gem whilst walking through town. This was my dish, delicious, healthy and filling. Super happy I found this place for lunch!

Collective Espresso was a nice little cafe serving modern Australian brunch meals in Camberwell. We ordered their insta-worthy oreo pancakes and poke bowl. The poke bowl came with salmon and vege that were fresh and delicious though it could do with more rice. The pancake had a nice fluffy texture but overall it was very dry/lacking sauce and the popcorn was stale. Coffee was great and presented nicely with cute latte art. Service was quick and friendly.

Good quality and fresh food! Coffee and beverage are on point! The outdoor seating is pretty good!

Waited >40 minutes for food. We were starved by then. But the food filled us up. Barista still managed to do coffee art for everyone even though it was super busy. Now that’s talent.

The exterior of this coffee shop has good traditional atmosphere. Only got a flatwhite for takeaway due to lockdown, so I'll enjoy some meals for having here next time!

Really recommend great brunch place! Nice environment, quick staff service & friendly!

Service was good and layout of the restaurant was nice. But the food didn’t seem quite there. The banana bread seemed more like banana cake slathered in Nutella. Berry compote was also missing. Partner ordered the big breakfast, poached egg was slightly over cooked. Ice chocolate was a bit too milky. Overall food presentation was not great. With a little bit of work on the food the restaurant could be great! It’s in a lovely location.
100% Honest
Friendly staff, good food, possibly a little too much prosciutto (I know!! How is this a thing) on the pizza. But otherwise great place for a casual lunch or dinner
Lily
Came here for dinner recently with the family. We al ordered the porterhouse. Good cut of porterhouse steak, unfortunately poorly cooked. The cook obviously doesn’t know how to render the fat off a porterhouse, and the grill/hot plate was not hot enough so my medium rare steak was cooked very unevenly. The waitress had little English and/or wasn’t concentrating - she forgot our fries and got my steak order incorrect. Please train your staff better and maybe keep to Italian food - if you don’t know how to cook a steak correctly, why bother serving it?!

Excellent cappuccino and coffee

Would you pay $15 for a basic sandwich? The waiters walked past our table numerous times ignoring the mess that the previous guests had left. Finally we asked for it to be cleared. Lucky there’s not much competition for this cafe in the area.

I visited this cafe with family and the staff were very nice in giving us a large table and looked after us very well. Most of us ordered the big breakfast which was very good however the poached eggs were too over poached for my liking. Overall nice cafe with nice tasty food and excellent staff. Would come again.

Went there last night and tried the $115 for 4 people 3 courses dinner from groupon. The food are amazing and the portions are big. The staff are friendly. Definitely will go back for sure.
Mini Mooi
Friendly staff and fast service. The main meal was very large portion and my Lamb rump stake was very tender and tasty. My husband had pork berry which was very large but he wished they cook longer to get more crispy.

Had the Breakfast board for 2. Overall the food was tasty and a decent value for money. Food was good overall however, the poached eggs were slightly more overdone than I prefer. The level of competition in Melbourne for breakfast is so high though that the rating reflects how this place stacks up against the competition. 3/5 average with no dire issues but no remarkable qualities either

We were shopping in Camberwell for our weekly groceries and decided to have a short break at this little cafe. The cappuccino was nice and frothy but the ice latte was far too milky. We shared a raspberry muffin which was not that great. It was slightly dry and boring. Not a place I would be rushing back to anytime soon.

We went there for lunch today and ordered the cheese burger together with a few other dishes. We were very disappointed when it finally arrived .... The bun looked like something from the supermarket and was cold. The cheese was small and not melted. The pattie fell apart into pieces even before we picked up the bun and was very dry. Overall it was a very poorly put together burger for the price we paid. Will probably not return u fortunately.
Traceorama
Food delivered far later than people who arrived after we did. Cheeseburger did not have much cheese. The bun was literally cold to the touch. Decent fries.
Jane
I ordered an Eggs Benedict, the entire dish tasted of vinegar and the eggs were hard boiled. After I paid I politely gave this feedback at the register so that they could let the kitchen know for future reference. As I had already paid the staff member didn’t care and brushed me off. This was quite possibly the worst meal I have ever eaten so I thought I would post a review as they weren’t interested in hearing from the customer directly!

We waited over half an hour for 2 main dishes. The salad was oily and meat was burnt. The pasta was blend and there was little Ragu meat. The staff was rude and service was poor. Overpriced menu
Melbourne STARDUST
If you happen to be in Camberwell, you just cannot miss this beauty... No pretence to its food, just great flavours and pure produce... it brought a freshness to the aura .. given that there are so many places out there trying extremely hard to be up there.. we enjoyed a simple meal here and were absolutely amazed, great coffee too.

Serving size: Decent

Decor- Wow this place is so huge and spacious, very bright and neatly arranged. It has a longish persona.

Menu: Rich Deep Robust tones in their coffee and Italian flavours in their food.

Key Focus: to provide a world class exquisite cuisine and experience

STARDUST Factor: 5/5

Quick lunch stop - shared pulled beef panini - was tasty. Had a chai tea, ok too milky & not enough chai flavour for my liking. Service friendly. Squeezed us in as they were busy as it was mother's day.

Four of us went to this Italian Cafe Restaurant with a Groupon voucher. Place is nice and clean. We ordered pastas and beef dishes. Unfortunately the taste was not right, wasn’t taste Italian at all.

I do really like this place, and the interior is amazing! Living in their neighbourhood I’ve watched this place change over time. I know the food here is good, but I really did not enjoy my food unfortunately. My partner has the prosciutto pizza, it was very nice. I had the lasagna, the plate was piping hot (and that’s fine) but the lasagna inside was just warm, the pasta sheets weren’t completely cooked (so it was hard when you bit into it), and when I looked in there was hardly any meat or sauce. It was disappointing as I was craving lasagne! I’d definitely come back again, so I would still recommend this place!

Love this place! They always treat my friends well, and they never mind if we just come here for drinks or dessert. Also, a perfect place during a hot day because of the air con! Thank you for being a great venue! I appreciate that the staff remembered they had forgotten to add the cream onto my friend’s drink so immediately returned it to the kitchen. I have no complaints about this place at all!

3.5/5This a all-round Italian cafe, with ample premises and comfortable seating area, patrons of all ages and a large Italian and Australian classics menu, with generous servings. I had their hand-made chicken gnocchi with wine sauce and they were lovely, perhaps lacked a bit of finesse and were on the pricey side. Their earl-grey tea was great. I enjoyed my visit.

This is a photo of the bottom of my omelette which was burnt and it was dry and tasteless. The salmon it came with was average at best. Service was nice enough but the food was very disappointing. Wouldn’t recommend I’m sorry
Julie
Unfortunately the lasagna we ordered was too salty, the sauce was almost like water (soup in lasagna?), chunk of meats was like left over meats thrown in there, hardly any cheese, no white sauce... it was not good at all and not worth $26 :(

As you enter the place you are welcomed by a magnificent setting, a welcoming and attentive waittress with a smile on her face :) Coffee lovers!!!!!!!!!!must must must definately visit this place for their amazing coffees and coffee art. You will be amazed by different and unique designs on the coffee each day by a great barista with some droolworthy italian dishes. I personally love their Pasta range and risottos. However, there is much more to try :)

If for nothing else, it’s worth stoping by Short Black for their coffees.
Their gorgeous latte art is bound to impress, and paired with such generous portions of Italian inspired cuisine and some of the best prosciutto in Melbourne, why wouldn’t you?

Short Black is a renowned authentic Italian restaurant situated in the prestigious Melbourne suburb, Camberwell. The place is easily accessible public transports (tram, train) as well as plenty parking along the Burke Road and private parking spots at the back of the restaurant. We’re glad to be invited to have food experience in Short Black, Camberwell.
FOOD TRIP
Short Black is a cafe located on the busy shopping precinct of Camberwell. They are conveniently open thoughout the day to cater for all meals from breakfast to dinner. Serving sizes are generous and prices are reasonable. Love the flavours too! Would definitely recommend!. Sweet and pleasant without loosing that great matcha taste ★★★★

Short Black Cafe is a spacious, vibrant cafe in the lovely suburb of Camberwell. With round the clock, bustling vibes, Short Black gives a sense of a casual Melbourne cafe or restaurant that you could easily spend hours just chatting away in, especially over some award-winning coffees and INSANELY delicious dessert! They have quite a large menu, featuring not only simple brunch dishes, but also an extensive Italian feature, from house-made dry aged prosciutto, to pasta and wood-fired pizzas.

Good vibe. Great service. Good food. Yes all of these basics makes this place a very good cafe and restaurant.
Visited this place after months and I believe the new management is doing a commendable job!

I just loved the simple styling and glow about Short Black cafe as we walked up in the rain tonight in Camberwell.

The Italian based menu read very well and it didn’t take long for us to decide on our courses. There was a reasonably good selection of local and imported beers and wines

It was a great start to the meal with warm bread rolls delivered accompanied by a delicious butter of paprika, olive and garlic (butter changes weekly).

For entree we ordered the calamari. These thick strips of calamari where crumbed in a tasty herbed polenta, I loved the coating with the light crunch and the fact that they were not at all oily. The tartare was lovely and fresh, with a real caper zest. (Nailed it).

We chose the Pumpkin and potato gnocchi with mushroom chicken and cream. This luscious rich creamy sauce was oozing with flavour, it paired perfectly with the gnocchi which had a good texture, not too firm and no sog.

We also had the Margarita pizza (we added anchovies to this), and it came out with huge white anchovies and fresh basil, and significant amounts of cheese. The pizza had a delightful base, not too thick, not to thin, with a little bit of chew and bubbles in the crust, perfection, just the way I love it.

To finish our night we had lattes prepared by the award winning barista. I don’t normally drink coffee this late and I’m glad I made an exception in this case. Not only is Aaron a genius with the coffee art, but my coffee was so delicious I couldn’t even tell it was made with soy milk.

Thanks Fabiha for the invite and Emily for looking after us so well.

Lovely decor and lovely staff. The food was presented well and the portions were generous.Unfortunately, the food was quite bland and lacked flavour, the tiramisu desert was far too sweet and was not to my liking. Very disappointing visit.
Amber
I've been here several times now and cannot rave about this place more, we have always been looked after by the friendliest wait staff and the coffee is terrific, Emily our waitress who we've always managed to get was telling us that the barista Aaron is the Latte Art Champion and it shows (sorry we don't have any photos) The food is good, I usually have the banana bread stack and I love it! This is my new weekend cafe and I will definitely keep coming back.
Good Food Good Mood
We were invited to Short Black today and given it’s name I had assumed it was a cafe. Upon entry I realised it offers more than just brunch fare and is open for dinner too. We decided to start with coffee and while their superstar barista who creates unbelievable latte art wasn’t in we still got a great caffeine hit.

We ordered an entree calamari and then the beef burger and lasagne for the mains. I considered getting a pizza but was thrilled with the decision to go with the lasagne as it was one of the most delicious I’ve had. A real hearty and rich sauce with quality chunky pieces of beef rather than a mince and served in a bowl alongside bread rather than by the slice so you can mop up all that yummy ragu- winner.

I also ate a lot of the chips off my husbands burger plate and thoroughly enjoyed the moorish seasoning. The only disappointment was the calamari which we found a little bland. I wish we had the stomach room to sample some of the yummy looking cakes but we couldn’t possibly have eaten more such was the generosity of the lasagne serving.

We observed some lovely staff interactions with what were obviously regular customers and it was really nice to see their banter and the friendly relationships they have. This is clearly the kind of place where you experience real and genuine service.

Went in for lunch today with my friend. Tried chicken parmigiana and Mediterranean pizza. Loved it! The waitress was friendly and helpful.
Would definitely go again.

Just stoped in for a quick bite to eat before heading home the service is impeccable and the place has such a vibrant atmosphere. I tried the gnocchi which is house made and its incredible would recommend to anyone. Also try their coffee, best in camberwell!
DAMMIT JANET I LOVE FOOD
Short Black is THE place to go to if you are after amazing coffee and even more amazing latte art!! We were fortunate enough to have our coffees made by their incredible barista Aaron, who currently holds the title of Victorian Latte Art Champion. We were blown away by this guy's talent! I MEAN LOOK AT THAT WOLF! Coffees aside, this place also serves up some delicious Italian food. We sampled their Lasagna (which contained house made lasagna sheets and large juicy chunks of beef), as well as their Pear and Pancetta pizza (which had a terrific base and was topped off with a nice gorgonzola).

Big thanks to Short Black for having us! Looking forward to our next visit!

What a fabulous cafe in Camberwell. Lovely staff, amazing and award winning barista and food is equally as good. I loved the casoli experience which consists of 24mth aged prosciutto, two poached eggs, fresh pear all on multigrain. What a delicious and fresh brunch meal. We also had eggs on toast and the insta worthy banana bread stack with seasonal fruit, pistachio, flax seeds, nutella & mascapone.
The reason this cafe deserves a 5 is because of the barista, the coffee served was delicious really hit the spot. The coffee art was out of this world, please have a look at the photos attached and on our Insta as well. We will definitely visit again. Thank you Short Black.

3.5 ⭐

Short Black is a refreshing cafe/restaurant situated on the busy Bourke Rd. The moment we walked in we were greeted by the lovely staff in the modernly decorated venue. The bread and the mushroom butter was nice to have while waiting for the food to come out. We started our evening with The tasting plate and the Calamari and were pleasantly surprised by the freshness of the meats. The cook yourself steak option was adamantly recommended and was a unique experience with some nice sides cooked well to compliment the dish. The lasagna was well cooked but felt it was missing substance. Coffee was great and was a great way to finish our meal. I look forward to coming and trying the breakfast option. All in all a nice experience and with some tweaking this place will prosper.

You have to love a place with great staff! The best thing about this place is the staff are great! Great customer service from the management here. We were well looked after service wise. The place is beautiful simply styled. The food however for me didnt quite hit the mark. It missed a bit of love on the plate. Some great elements and well prepared dishes. The location and staff are great so I feel if the food is tweaked a little then the overall experience could have been a lot better.

Came here for dinner tonight and was looked after so well by Danny and Emily, we were walking past and saw a sign for dinner, $45 for 2 people. We tried and it was amazing! The food is great but the coffee is even better. My husband and I had the tasting platter to start and we both chose the pumpkin gnocchi which we were told was made in house and you can really tell the difference. We will definitely be back and thanks again to Danny and Emily for everything and to the Barista as well, sorry we didn't catch your name but your coffee is phenomenal.

Today I was invited to visit this cafe on Bourke Road in Camberwell.

The service was warm and welcoming and I was served by a lovely waitress, Emily. I got there just before the lunch rush and this place was already buzzing.

My coffee was tasty and it comes with a complimentary chocolate chip cookie.

I ordered a vegetarian breakfast lunch which was delicious w fresh tomato, English spinach, toast, mushrooms etc... Yummo

And this may seem odd but given that I saw that this cafe slices it's own ham on site I had to try some ham too lol.

They also wood fired pizzas, pasta and breakfast till 4.30pm, which is great.

With a range of beers and wines including Rochford,I can see this place being even busier at night. But this cafe had a steady flow of people coming in when I was there which was not surprising given the quality of the food. Happy days.

Dined last night with another couple who had bought a groupon voucher. We were advised of our options with the deal which was pizzas and pastas for the mains. When we were ready to order .....pizzas as mains, we were sadly advised that pizzas had got over as they had been so popular through the evening. We were a bit disappointed as we were so looking forward to them ( they looked so good when we saw them being taken to other tables around us).

However the staff member who served us ( not sure if owner or manager), the bearded gentleman then let us order any of the mains even the ones not included in the deal. The entree platter for 2 with the prosciuto was simply too good. the quality and quantity was fantastic. For mains We had the Salmon, I had the chicken(on his recommendation), the gnocci and fish and chips. Dessert was Tiramisu.

The food was AWESOME. The service which we received was even more AWESOME. This staff member went out of his way to make our dinner a fantastic experience. Such a pleasant person. Never once felt that we were dining on a voucher. Nothing was too much trouble. Thank you so much if you read this review.

I would have liked to give it 4.5 STARS but do not know how to do the half....the only reason for taking off the .5 is because they ran out of pizzas.
Will definitely recommend this place. Give it a go, even if you try it on a voucher you will not be disappointed.

Went to lunch with my friends recently at Short Black and the experience overall at this restaurant is fantastic. The staff are friendly and attentive and will do anything for their customers even when they are busy.
I had a simple latte to start and the baristas have such talent for their designs and flavour, I will definitely be coming back for my coffee fix!
The smashed avocado I ordered was moist, flavourful and with the perfect crunch to the bread.
With the eccentric atmosphere with light music to fill the air Short Black is definitely the place to go with friends for a nice coffee and a meal.
Would definitely go again!
Crooked Rain
Great service, delicious food - and very generous with the prosciutto. Order any dish involving prosciutto and you probably won't regret it. Cheers for a lovely dinner!

Just finished breakfast with my partner here and the food, service and coffee was sensational. Couldn’t fault the place.
the service was great & timely, the food was well presented and very good and the atmosphere
I deifinitely come back to have brunch again.

Had a dinner there recently and loved everything about it. The ambiance of the restaurant, the food fantastic and the waiter exceptional. We had the added challenge of ensuring that some dishes were suitable for my girl friend and the waiter could not have been more helpful in following up with the kitchen and confirming what was or wasn't suitable. Was also surprised that the drinks menu was quite reasonable with low medium pricing and we enjoyed a wonderful chicken parmigiana as well as an excellent coffee. With 2 of us and some reasonable appetites I couldn't complaint about the value either. All aspects of the place made it one that will remain on my favourites list

Good food & really friendly staff! I was looking for a better brunch "experience". As a young women, I was looking for a good looking place, but it's pretty simple.. but worth going there for the amazing staff!
Heena Modi
It was a brunch date with my love. The food and flavours were amazing and good in quantity.. we ordered white chocolate and raspberry dome as well. And that was a superhit dessert.
Sab Katerel
A nice, more casual venue for dining than other cafes in Camberwell. A fair range on their menu, however vegetarians who are wary of rennet and gelatin may want to tread carefully as there is not much choice.
Low-key seating and lighting and the music is not too loud or disruptive. Having said that, when I visited, the music being played throughout my visit was the entirety of The Weeknd's 'Starboy' album, so I am not complaining.
Love Food
After some time, we decided to visit this establishment. The ambience was very nice, we are able to enjoy chatting with soft music background.
The staff was very friendly and manager introduced us to few recommendations. I set my choice on the prosciutto pizza w olives. The portion was very generous and prosciutto came on the side. Love the prosciutto!!!!!. Olives gives a different kick to this dish. Waitress came with take away box without being asked. That’s nice.
It was a great meal well spent. $25 for this dish.

Hubby and I was in the area so decided to swing by here for brekkie. The Signature Breakfast Board for Two caught our attention and thats what we got. First impression when it came out - light, rustic and fresh! Got poached eggs and scramble - thought we were able to get 2 types of eggs but in fact we were charged as extra. Shame cause althiugh the scramble was light and fluffy, the poached eggs (which took an extra 10min) was watery and plain. The bacon was plenty but could have done woth it being a bit crispier, tomato and mushroom was nicely charred, avacado was just peeled - perhaps smashed with some fetta would have completed the board for me. Cheese and fruit was nice but i almost wished that there was a lil muffin or danish on the board also? As they did mention fruit and sweets as part of the board?

Overall a nice breakfast but lil hit and miss. The Matcha Latte I had was delicious. Creamy and had plenty of matcha flavour.

Nice cafe on main road. Plenty of seats.
Used to come here all the time for the Tempura Fish, unfortunately which I came back the last time they no longer had it due to a change in menu and chefs however still had a great experience and the renovations looked great !
Scrumptious GG
My husband and I had a brunch here on the rainy Sat. We ordered matcha and latte to warm us up, and big breakfast and egg benedict for our brunch.
Matcha was great! Strong, creamy and hot. Latte was gorgeous too.
Something that let me down was my egg bennedict.
Whilst the eggs was perfectly poached, the hollandaise sauce was way too sour. It had a very strong vinegar taste, I had to scrape all the sauce from my poached eggs. What a big dissapointment.
I only tried the sausages from what my husband had, but he said his meal was alright.
Service was good and attentive staff.

If you're looking for a yummy pasta then Shortblack will deliver that for you. All pasta is house-made and it really makes a difference. The pizza we ordered was a little overcooked which was disappointing. The inside of the place is a little run down, however we would go back for the pasta dishes.
Kate
Camberwell keeps changing. While short black has different decor, it has been there for many years. The food is delicious and the smells from the open kitchen are amazing. Basic choices and slow service are what let this star down. They’re quick on the drinks but very slow on the food.
Hanayoridango
My partner and I were pretty excited to go there as we heard they had a renovation. Only the interior has changed but the food menu seems almost same as before. The Mediterranean salad I had was full of lamb and it’s spice was overpowering. Overall experience was not really pleasant and some staff looked quite dull and unmotivated, in particular when a big group came in for coffee and sweets a little before they started closing work. Some food are overpriced.

Great spot for a coffee andcroissant. Service is efficient. Nice music playing in the background. Seating areas - good mix for small and large groups.
Lily
Amazing service, amazing food
Enjoyed throughly and the outside of the cafe looks small however the inside is quite the opposite
Will be back !!

AMBIENCE/ SERVICE: A nice standard cafe. Arrived around 9:30 on a Tuesday morning, it was moderately busy given the cafe can sit a lot of customers (the interior is way bigger than expected!) I think they could’ve done with one extra staff on the floor given there was only one waitress who did a really good job of managing all the tables, but possibly could’ve had faster service with an extra pair of hands. The interior is pretty average; standard “modern cafe” aesthetic I.e. nothing special.
FOOD: my friend ordered the smashed avo with a side of bacon- the portion is generous, with two thick slices of bread and the side of bacon more than enough. Would’ve preferred a multigrain bread but that’s just personal preference and I’m sure I could’ve easily have asked for this.
Didn’t find the flavour to be anything worth commenting on and personally the chutney didn’t really add much.

RECOMMENDATION? Although I wouldn’t go to lengths to rave about this place, If you’re looking for a classic smashed avocado in a standard modern cafe then I would recommend as the service and portions are really good!!!
Foodbaby
Incredible attentive customer service. Food was delicious and value for money. Highly recommend this place!!!!!!! Coffee is beautiful - love the matcha latte 👌👌💯💯💯thank you for the great experience!

Amazing service, great food.
Staff were polite friendly and approachable. Food was excellent, although they had sold out of a lot of items when we were there.
Would easily come back

Something has changed here. This dull, average, standard cafe all of a sudden stepped up their game. Pizza that's on par with most in the area, decent fresh pasta, very generous servings, and service that's gone up a notch too. Well done guys and please keep it up!
VegoLover
The shopfront is deceiving as it’s huge inside like Georges with heaps of seating. Really busy during lunch times.
Wanted to try matcha latte but they ran out of matcha. Then my family wanted to tried fish of day but they didn’t have any fresh fish either.
Opted for soy hot chocolate which was ok, a bit sweet.
Grandmother’s recipe on spinach and ricotta cannelloni sounded awesome but it didn’t have much flavour. The serving was very generous with three cannellonis!!
Service took awhile as there was only one waitress which seemed quite inexperienced and overwhelmed with a full house of customers.
Lots of standard pastas and pizzas here but expect to wait for awhile to get service.
Meeohmyohmel
Arrived and was seated promptly and given menus but unfortunately that’s where the positive comments ended.. we waited for over 12mins for service and water but no one ever came over. They seemed very understaffed for weekend service.
BlueberryHill
One of those breakfasts where nothing was wrong but nothing was "oh yeah let's go back there!"'either. Most items good but unremarkable. Mushrooms were weirdly dry. Coffee had good taste but was a bit tepid. We weren't brought water and when we asked we got a bottle but no glasses. We eventually retrieved our own after deciding necking the bottle was a bit gauche. There's a slightly off putting strobing effect from the combo of the downlighting and the ceiling fans.
Sam
I only tried their pasta , the noodle is too soft for my liking .the restaurant is quite clean , the staff are quite nice . It’s a good place to catch up for coffee.
Jean
This place is always busy. Came here for lunch and ordered pizza to share and 2 coffees. After 45 minutes still no pizza so we chased them up and apparently they forgot to put the order in and had just put it in. When the bill came they charged us only for the coffees and we got the pizza free. That is good service.

We dined at Short Black on Tuesday night to celebrate my husband birthday and our Anniversary and the food was superb!

I had eaten lunch there a few times before and I had enjoyed the experience, so decided to try the night menu.

We had the Antipasto Plate first to share and it was delicious .... I just love the smell of fresh cut Parma ham.

I was almost full after the entree, but then I had ordered Pork Belly and Ian had Calamari. The plates were beautifully presented and also large.

I ate half as I wanted to leave room for the Tiramisu and coffee!

The owner gave us an extra glass of wine as it wa a celebration... so nice of him! The girl who served us was so helpful too and very pleasant, which helped make the night!

I would thoroughly recommend Short Black as one of the best Italian restaurants in town but make sure you go there hungry as the food is plentiful.
Mingo
Had the Casoli Experience brekkie and it was good with the 24 months cured prosciutto. But their coffees - latte and moka, were the best I have tasted so far in melbourne!! Impressed me so much that I complimented the burista and found out they showed us their champion award!
Nat
Although the food was good, still nothing to rave about. The carbonara was a slight bit too eggy for my liking, and the lasagne was very rich. Decent size portions and the pasta is home made, however if you want a pasta fix I feel there are definitely some better places around.
Donm
Been here before great Cafe but this time needed lactose free milk which they don’t have. How hard is it to keep long long lactose free milk I’m sure I’m not the only person to ask for it.
Deb
I was very disappointed to find that a number of good breakfast and lunch items have disappeared from the menu. The extensive menu shown on Zomato doesn't seem to exist any longer.
My friends and I used to go regularly to Short Black for brunch or lunch as we enjoyed the generous choice of menu items, like the different types of delicious sandwiches.
On this particular occasion I ended up ordering poached eggs on toast which was nice, but not particularly interesting. However, my waitress was friendly and very helpful.
Couldn't believe my favourites are no longer on the menu, and the limited, mainly expensive menu is the reason I won't be returning.
Just an additional small thing - one of the waitresses was wearing torn jeans which perhaps isn't the best look for staff in a smart cafe.
The management will have to smarten up, because there's plenty of competition from good cafes in the Camberwell- Hawthorn area.
Charlie Daniels (Curious Charlie)
Dinner at Short Black Cafe in Main Street known for their coffee art. Though the artist wasn't in tonight. It's a pizza and pasta place, one of many in the area hence we've never been here or noticed it before. Heard the menu had changed so many reviews no longer relevant. They also had a bloggers event to boost ratings. When you're invited service will be different. Hopefully not too much but it's like being the guest of honour.
Harriet Palmer
Short black has had a renovation which has made a huge difference to the feel of the cafe. The outdoor seating however is still a bid sad and needs some refreshing. The coffee is mediocre but the food can be quite nice; however over priced for the standard.

Thoroughly impressed by the polite service and quality Italian cuisine with the dining experience. Came here for a free birthday dinner (a free dish chosen by the guest). The wood-fired pizzas have a delicious dough base which poofs up profoundly well- and you are even able to watch them use the oven!

The prosciutto is extremely fresh and has been aged for a long period of time, giving a subtle taste- great for those of whom love their deli meats!

Lobster fettuccini was well worth it for the price; fresh seafood and thick noodles of pasta.

The pastas and risottos are also well made; for dinner, this isn't the cheapest nor most expensive place for to dine, but I would recommend if you're looking for a nice atmosphere and warm, filling food.

Had dinner here, great food, ambience, service. Will definitely come back! Had the fish and chips and chicken risotto, both very fresh, well flavoured and hearty.

Service was bad and staff were rude. Food wasn't great as it came out cold. Coffee was good but that's about it. Won't be returning because there's plenty of nice coffee elsewhere

This cafe was visually appealing to the eyes, but wish I could say the same about all our food and the service. At the start, we were quickly taken to our table, but once we ordered, the service went downhill. We started off with arancini for entree, and I have to admit these were the best arancini I have had for a while - full of flavour and plated up beautifully. We were eager for our mains - spaghetti pescatore and diavolo pizza. The spaghetti was terrible - it was bland without any sauce tossed through the pasta. It was a struggle to get through the meal, and it was a shame that I couldn't finish it but was still hungry afterwards. The flavour was that bad that I stole bits of rocket from my husband's pizza to toss through the pasta to add some taste. It didn't do much as there wasn't enough rocket to spare. The diavolo pizza was very doughy with not enough sauce. I could have achieved a better taste with a slice of bread and salami from my local supermarket. There was no menu for dessert (in fact we weren't even offered dessert) but that was fine, we got up to see what was displayed at the counter and called a waiter over. The dessert was mud cake and apple crumble, both served with ice cream. These were both delicious but very big in portions so we brought it home. As a side note, the restrooms of this cafe does not cater for babies, so I had to change my little one in the open. Overall, this restaurant was good because we had a 50% off food voucher. Will we be back? Probably not.

Decent cafe, the avocado on toast with poached eggs is nice. Iced chocolate is REALLY overly sweet and filling, be aware! The ham and cheese sandwiches are good, especially for on the go. The ambience is a little dark and the tables look really old.

Find us on instagram: loveatfirstbite_aus

A solid local cafe. Eggs are poached perfectly. Like their outside tables as well for when the weather is nice!

Their service also comes with a smile :)

This place has changed their menu and removed several popular dishes. It used to be you'd walk in and see a large club sandwich on every table. Now it's gone from the menu! Also most sandwiches no longer come with chips anymore. It's a shame because this used to be one of my favourite places to eat. Not anymore!

Had heard about this place because of a Barista Legends Smackdown article that had mentioned one of their coffee crew Dongsu Shin who had placed 2nd in a comp, so knew that the coffee would be worth a try. Decided to pop in for a visit one Sunday morning. Unfortunately he wasn't there or maybe had already moved on. Either way the coffee was still very good, so the baristas were definitely well trained and knew how to serve up good coffee.

We ordered the Big Breakfast and Salmon Stack and it was ordinary. Would go back for the coffee more than the food. Constant traffic in though, so it's a popular place.

Sad to say our visit wasn't a pleasant one. We only went here as we were on a deadline and other better options were too busy. The service was quick and friendly but our order of two iced coffees with no ice cream came with ice cream, which we dealt with. However when I (not a huge coffee drinker) thinks it tastes a bit weird, and my partner (an avid coffee drinker) thinks it tastes weird that is not a good sign. The results of this ended up with multiple bathroom trips over the next hour or so. The Spanish style eggs were good without being amazing and my partners croissant with ham and cheese and added tomato was cold, it could of at least been warmed as we asked. Definitely better options in the Camberwell and Hawthorn area.

Pretty impressed! Had a Groupon voucher and the service was wonderful and so was the food. Had the classic summer smasher, you can't go wrong there. Portions were filling, and loved the atmosphere. Pancakes were also super light and fluffy. Great chai latte too. Perfect way to spend a Sunday morning!
Whats On The Grill?
This place felt like e a typical 90's cafe/restaurant. Nice & accommodating staff with very typical, average food. Came with 3 friends and we were put on a good sized table. Dishes were chicken parma, BLT, steak sandwich & pulled pork burger which all were very typical. The pulled pork burger was probably the stand-out and looked more modern in presentation. Drinks were lime milkshake, lemon & lime bitters and an iced coffee (without ice-cream) - all again, average quality.

5 stars?? you have to be joking. This place is worth six.
Great coffee and latte art. Everything is reliably good. The bruschetta is the best on planet earth.
I often get the eggs al forno, and other tables ooh and ahh - wishing they had ordered the same.
The place is more than a cafe. There is a wonderful head waiter who makes you feel special, and who remembers you have been in before. I hope the boss pays him what he is worth - as he sets this place apart from any other cafe up the road.
I will continue to go to this place -perhaps the no 1 cafe in Melbourne. It is the only place I have ever left a big tip.
Meeee Hungry!
We were having a 'we cant be bothered cooking for ourselves' kinda night. Had a squizz on groupon and found a ripper deal for this place ($39 for 2!) - conveniently just around the corner from home! Started with a couple of proseccos and a plate of prosciutto with garlic and rosemary focaccia. I wouldve been happy to be done just from that! The focaccia was tasty with a great base (not too thick, not too thin) and the prosciutto was fresh and delish and very plentiful. I was tempted by pizza but didnt need it after the focaccia, so went with the pumpkin gnocchi - was pretty good! The seafood pasta was also good! And we had enough leftover for lunch the next day! This feast was followed by the largest piece of chocolate mousse cake ever - so much that it took 3 days to eat! Very rich, but cant complain for a sweet treat at the end of a meal. Very very decent serves and great value for money with the groupon voucher.

We went for dinner on Groupon voucher. The waitress girls were all friendly and warmly approachable, so my 2.5 points are purely to their credits. The 2 main courses we ordered were Lobster Fettuccini (had to pay $5 extra, not mentioned on Groupon at all) and Risotto di Franco. We're then told they sold out fettuccini, so suggested to have spaghetti instead. Italian restaurant ran out of fettuccine, are you kidding? When the mains were served it wasn't spaghetti that was used, it was Asian noodles, what a joke!!! Both noodle and risotto rice were overcooked, soggy and soft, poor quality, not commercial standard. In the end when we ordered the freak shake, we're told they ran out of ice cream. By then we'd already been hugely disappointed, so just ordered coffee and left. 0 point for the chef and management. Will not go back, at least for a long while.
Munching Melbourne
Be sure to try their prosciutto at short black. We would have to say that it's one of the best in Melbourne! It is from Italy and cured for 24 months. The Casoli experience dish was our favourite, the prosciutto paired very well with pear poached in processco. The latte art is magnificent with the barista winning a latte art competition. Service was top notch and waitstaff did a commendable job. Be sure to check out short black, there is something for everyone there!

Swung by for a quick dinner and was pleasantly surprised. The Spagetti Marinara was very tastey and the seafood included was generous. Also shared a pizza which was well made with an impressive and authentic dough. The staff were attentive and polite. Main drawback was the long table which made the restaurant feel a little awkward!

Update December 2019: really great dining experience, my steak was cooked perfectly at medium rare, gnocchi melted in the mouth and the pork belly wasn’t too fatty! Entrees were generous and the staff were attentive.

Previous occasion: Average desserts. Lemon slice was nice by a well distributed company however the panacotta was barely edible. Just felt like it was filled with gelatin/ was really old. Had no fresh taste. Started packing up at around 9pm opening the door to bring in the cold breeze.

Nice place, good service with great portions and visually great food. However the quality of food was very mediocre.
We had a Groupon voucher and had an antipasto share plate of prosciutto and focaccia to die for; a pollo primavera pizza and spaghetti marinara. Both the pizza and past were ok. Pizza was too greasy and pasta lacked flavour. Then we were offered a complementary slice of tiramisu. It wasn't a slice- it was a giant block. Tiramisu would have tasted perfect without the generous dusting of cinnamon sugar on it.
Overall experience was nice as the staff members were very polite and courteous.

Went there as a family of 4. We purchased Groupon the includes 2 course with wine. The portions are huge! Food was quite good. We liked the lobster fettuccine, lots of meat and flavour was good :)

The guys tried very hard on the service and are to be commended, overall the meal was ok but missed something. The couple on the next table had an Antipasto platter that looked fantastic. Will give it another go !

Strong and smooth iced coffee, with quality vanilla bean ice cream. Decadent slice of tiramisu. Great atmosphere and located conveniently along Burke Road. Pricey.

Maybe I came in on an off day but my 'big breakfast' was burnt (see photo). Bacon, sausage and tomato burnt, poached eggs almost solid. The staff simply did not care, more interested in paying for food and clearing the table.

Pretty disappointing, looks like this place is really go Ng down hill.
Tim
Coffee is passable, food has really gone down hill. Nachos..how do you mess that up?Plates were old and dirty and my food had clearly been sitting in the kitchen a while...
Enjoyed a delicious Father's Day lunch with the family. We really enjoyed the variety of meals available and everything was prepared and cooked perfectly. You can tell that Short Black really values what they present to diners. Service was excellent - prompt and timely.

Feeling like some Italian, we headed into short Black Café in Camberwell to dine. Usually known for their brunch's, they also are open for dinner 7 days a week. We were greeted with warm staff and an relaxing venue. Plenty of room for large groups and friends. The menu ramps up for dinner time offering some quality dining options with plenty of sharing options, mains and of course wood fire pizza.

Overall everything was good, a very good experience, the quality of ingredients shows throughout all the dishes. The staff are super friendly and happy to tell you the back story of all the foods and their favourites.
