Review Barolo - Camberwell

Andrew L
Nice little Italian joint in Camberwell. Pizza was nice. Gnocchi was gorgeous and pillowy. Dessert was a stand out. The panna cotta and creme brulee had a beautiful silky texture. Service was friendly and attentive.

Lovely Cafe restaurant with friendly staff and lovely deco. There is a secret upstairs area for private party! Rather small portion size but just enough if you aren't hungry. Interesting menu but definitely room for improvement. I look forward to coming back soon.

My wife and I had a dinner through there, we ordered garlic prawn and mushroom pasta, food were fatanstic, fresh and yummy. The triple chocolate desert was great my wife really liked it. Staff and decoration are superb. They have happy hours every day 3pm to 6pm, pizza night every Tuesday + wine for 20$, pasta night every Wednesday+ wine 25$ and Thursday night goes for steak + wine or salad for 25$. Don't miss that

4 cheese pizza was really good! Seafood marinara was amazing. Sugar layer of the Creme brulee doesn't "crack" like it should but that doesn't really matter after you put it in your mouth. Conclusion the chef knows his food!

Hmm.. entrees that didn't match description on menu.garlic confit missing from the snails... The pork belly was described as served with crispy noodles and spring onion... . And for dessert. burnt Mille feulle and "lemon tart" that's just a commercially bought bland tart base filled with crème patissiere.... (Sad face)

Well priced for the quality. I came with a group and shared a few dishes, which were all very good. I’m definitely coming back for the mushroom pizza 👌🏻

Food was beautiful, just delicious. Staff were attentive but not over the top so as to make you feel crowded. Entree came out quickly, main took a little longer but we were dining at peak hour and the gentleman serving us came over to check that we weren’t running off to the movies. Gorgonzola gnocchi were like little pillows of cloud, Duck melted in the mouth and fettuccine was aldenté (perfect) the food was certainly worth the wait & dessert was lovely too!

Good night out for a simple date night. I had the risotto and was quite pleased with the quality and flavour. The wait staff were polite and helpful, not leaving us to linger but also not constantly hovering. Good wine list the matched the food and the price range well. Happy to have found a nice little local place for a delicious pre-movie dinner.

The evening started badly with no welcome at all from the staff (the café was almost empty)
We waited for some time to order. The food was rated as poor on our table. The gnocchi had a very plain tomato sauce, the Barramundi had a strange flavouring and wasn’t not finished and the steak Frites ($44) -described as eye fillet medallions, was thin pieces of steak in a creamy sauce followed up with bowls of creamy mushroom sauce, Odd!
The wait staff seemed inexperienced, as plates were whisked off the table whilst folk were eating, including the barely touched mushroom sauce.
Unfortunately, with the Crème brûlée desserts, the custard was hardly set and the ice cream on the side was covered in shredded coconut!
We were loath to tip, but we did so. The wait staff were aware that we were leaving but no-one bothered to farewell us.
They simply carried on their conversation behind the bar. A disappointing evening all round.
NB It is hard to reconcile our experience with other very positive comments. Perhaps the cafe has changed hands

Went with the family and we had the pasta and pizza. Servings sizes average but sufficient. I had the pumpkin gnocchi which was probably the best meal on the table. Gnocchi soft and perfect. Came in a pumpkin sauce so had it like a soup which tasted delicious. Meat lovers and chicken pizza good size but were bland in taste. Pizzas looked sparse as not much toppings . Fettuccine carbonara was average in size and flavour. Service friendly and didn’t have to wait long for meals.

Came here with a couple of friends for dinner. Friendly service but the food was a bit hit and miss for the price charged. Some dishes definitely felt a bit cheap for the price.

What was good:
Eggplant chips
Sticky pork belly
Ragu tasted good but the sauce seemed very watery
Mille fuille - the construction of the dressert was a bit surprising but at least the flavours were good.

We ordered chocolate mousse and got served this at Barolo...which basically sums up our dining experience at this establishment. I wouldn’t rush back.

Exceptionally friendly hosts; very welcoming and entertaining. Broad selection of Italian cuisine for fair prices. Good cocktails and delicious pizzas.

3.5/5
This was quite a cute Italian restaurant in Camberwell that I enjoyed dinner at with a few friends 😍

We ordered the gnocchi Napoli, pizza capriciossa, and fettuccine mushroom + popcorn chicken.

The Napoli was really creamy and soft- I loved this dish!

The fettuccine was unfortunately a bit bland for my liking but still very creamy nonetheless.

The chicken was slightly dry and the batter wasn’t the best but the mayo was really yum.

The pizza crust was quite crispy and very fresh ☺️

Shoutout to the waiter who brought over candles for our friends birthday donuts! Was so considerate of him

We decided to come here based on the high star review on many social media platforms.
The food was 3 star worthy, had a lack of flavour and a large variety however I think the large menu with different dishes based off different cuisines affected the outcome of how good the quality could have been.
The staff were very lovely and attentive.
Ambiance was nice however some music would have been good in the background to muffle out all the other tables conversations.
Entree were quite nice the calamari, pop corn chicken and sticky pork belly, all decent servings and flavoursome. However the mains lacked. The Gorgonzola gnocchi was lacking some flavour and the texture and serving size of the gnocchi was off. The fettuccini was too watered down and there was no cheese served with it. The lamb risotto was tough and very bland- had to add a lot of salt.
For sides we ordered the pear and Parmesan salad which was the highlight of our night out. The shoe string fries were nice, but the sauce that came with it was highly questionable ....
Overall good prices for meals served however wouldn’t rush back anytime soon.

Duck Fat Potatoes
The duck fat potatoes were nothing special, to me, it just tasted like regular roasted potatoes. They were kinda shiny probably because of the duck fat but the potatoes didn’t taste fatty at all which was really good. They gave us a side dip for the potatoes which made them taste less plain but overall I think the potatoes are alright, pretty filling though. They also gave us a lot so it took ages to finish so it’s worth $9.

Crispy Lamb Ribs

You must get the crispy lamb ribs! This was my favourite dish out of everything we ordered. The lamb was so crispy on the outside and was crunchy every bite, nicely seasoned. The lamb was a bit fatty as well so the fat around the sides was crispy as well so it tasted extra good. The meat was so tender and had a more strong lamb flavour which I really like. They gave us plenty of ribs as well, pretty much eating the ribs got me kind of full before the main. They were so good I couldn’t stop eating.

Fettucini Duck
The slow cooked duck in the pasta was so tender, it almost melted in your mouth. They were really generous with the duck because there was so much in my pasta! Which is such a good thing. The Napoli sauce was pretty nice but it got pretty boring after a bit, the ducks' flavour was overpowered by the sauce. The parmesan cheese was really good, a bit melty when I got my pasta which was perfect.
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:
+ Spaghetti marinara
+ Meat lovers pizza

There’s a lot to like at this restaurant. The staff are friendly, accomodating and service was quick and efficient. The food was a little “hit and miss”, but there were some highlights. I particularly love the pasta (spaghetti marinara which had loads of well cooked seafood in a great tomato based sauce on well cooked pasta) and the pizza (super soft dough, with loads of tasty cuts of meat). Some of the accompaniments were lacking though. The garlic prawn lacks a punch and was a small serve for what you pay. The saganaki cheese, need more time on the griller, and the potatoes need to be a bit crunchier (although these were well spiced). Certainly will be back for their pizza and pastas though, just need some tweaking to the smaller dishes to make these sing.

Came here for the first time today with my two daughters (3 and 1). Excellent customer service, very accommodating and the food was excellent. (We had the mushroom fetucinne, steak frites and spaghetti vongole). Will definitely come back to to try other dishes on the menu.
JiTe
I think the food is 3.5 stars but the service is certainly 4 stars. Ambience is lively and spacious. Price is reasonable. Love the homemade gnocchi, mushroom pizza and carbonara. Will definitely be back again.
AaronN
Apart from the calamari salad (which was a bit bland), everything else we got here from the calabrese pasta, to the garlic pizza to the desserts was quite tasty. I would recommend it.

There are a lot of choices in Camberwell but it’s hard to go past Barolo for a casual restaurant that is good quality and value.
The extensive menu offers pizza, pasta and the usual main dishes. Service was friendly and timely. The restaurant is located up the hill near the station but well worth the walk if your off to the movies 🎥.

Lovely interior with good table layout
Dishes: Eggplant chips + sticky pork belly + fettuccine duck + capricciosa minus cheese & ham add rocket & onion + shoestring fries
Drinks: Espresso martini + Barolo one night stand + watermelon mojito jug
Opting for the $59 feed me deal for 2 we received 2x smaller plates 2x larger plates and a side. Fantastic value for money. The sticky pork was really lovely and tender and super tasty eggplant chips. The fettuccine was good however the pasta itself was a little bland. Enjoyed the capricciosa pizza but they also missed my onion.
Service was good however the food did take quite a while. A small shoutout to the Barolo one night stand drink, very refreshing and yummy. In the end it was a nice meal however they just missed the bar for quite a few things which resulted in a 3 for us.
If there is one super delicious gnocchi in Melbourne that is by Barolo. We had Gnocchi Gorgonzola last night and it was perfectly done. The owner is very friendly and chatty. His hospitality was great 👍 I would definitely go back.
FoodforThought
Barolo serves a mixture of Italian, French and Greek cuisine, which is great for choice but execution was less than impressive.
For entrees, their eggplant chips were tasty but their escargots were different from the typical French snails and a bit odd-tasting. The lamb shanks were lack lustre, needing more salt and sugar, and the carrot mash was watery. With desserts, the creme brûlée and choc fondant were quite nice except the lemon tart.
While food was a hit and miss but Barolo made up for it with their friendly service and nice ambience (and discount with Dimmi’s).

A beautiful restaurant with romantic decor. The staff are extremely attentive and service was prompt and perfect! Food was good too, I was not a huge fan of the lamb pizza, it was more on the dry side. Would recommend this place to friends!
Curlsaugogo
This place looks like it's popular with the Camberwell crowd, and yeah, it's fine. The staff are attentive and the food is decent quality. Its bog standard Italian fare, with a snail dish thrown in so that they can say they are also french.
I just can't tolerate the noise though, here and in so many places that don't seem to have given half a thought to that aspect of the environment. Hard surfaces 360. Yelling and my husband across my marinara and constantly straining to hear what he says... just wanted to finish my pasta and get outta there so that we could have a calm conversation. Which we did.
Defiant
Place that wants to appeal to all with classy decor to weekday special posters on the walls. Went for dinner with some friends and could see other tables on dates.

The food itself are the generic Italian pasta and pizza with some mains, so not groundbreaking stuff. My carbonara was a bit small. Friends got another pasta and a few pizzas and they were good. The picture is the panacotta with fairy floss hair.
LiveToEat
Interesting choices of entrees. The ones we ordered were delicious - esp the lamb ribs, sticky pork belly and eggplant chips.

Pastas decently priced but the marinara not worth the extra $. Sadly the steak was a big disappointment - two thin pieces (which was cooked closer to medium well instead of the ordered medium rare). Otherwise I would have no hesitation in giving a 5. Service was efficient, even sas teh crowd began to grow on a pretty busy Friday night.

Take your pick from the desserts - we had the creme brulee, coffee panna cotta and nutella pizza. 3 fantastic choices :)
Criss
Pretty yummy food, although we waited over 40 minutes for our entrees...it was a busy Saturday night I suppose. The manager came over and apologised for the delay which was nice of him. Otherwise, pretty good! :)

Good quality Italian restaurant with clean modern decor. Food was very good quality, I had beef ragu which was rich and tasty, wife had spaghetti marinara which was light and plenty of seafood. Unfortunately portions were on the small side considering the price we paid worth no complimentary bread. Service was friendly and attentive, the owner of the place was a very funny man who mage us feel welcome.
Flaming Goose70
Enjoyed a lovely meal on a Friday night. The restaurant was quite busy. Ordered popcorn chicken for entree and it was very tasty. The pizza was thin base and flavoursome and the chicken risotto also good. The food comes out warm which is disappointing. Especially if you like your food hot. Would come back again.

really love Borolo. have been twice. first time just got Bolognaise and it was great. this time tried a couple other dishes. stand out was Pumpkin Gnocchi! wow. pumpkin sauce is what they are referring to. but the potato gnocchi is probs the best I've had and I don't usually order it. light, so soft and so tasty. the pumpkin sauce is light and flavoursome. kind of like a thick pumpkin soup texture. calamari was also cooked well. lastly, shared Fettuccine Duck. this was very tasty. wouldn't have known it was duck but regardless, the meat was tender!
the place is fairly quiet but its also in a great part of camberwell just near the bridge and the Palace.

My partner is a coeliac which makes eating Italian - my favourite food - very difficult as it can be done quite terribly. Barolo however is an absolute gem that we found while walking past and despite being on the other side of town, it's 100% worth the drive. It's cosy, warm and well appointed and the service is attentive and friendly. The wine list is impressive with good selection of Italian and Australian wines, at a reasonable price. But the best bit is the food - the gluten free pizza and pasta were so convincing, we had to double check. You can tell it's handmade with love and the amount of duck in the ragu impressed my protein-loving partner. My gnocchi Gorgonzola just melted in my mouth and the creme brulee had the perfect crack. We're already planning to go back with our wider family. Only thing that's missing is some light, background music.

We had lunch here and all the food were good, spaghetty with squid, and the pork belly as well. Appetiser we ordered eggplant chips and fries, both were okay. Service by (im guessing) the owner was very friendly and atentive, he asked where we came from and chit chat a bit while serving, we felt very welcomed :) overall a very good experience, and we definitely will come back.

Barolo is one of the few Italian restaurants on main street, along with cheap family friend eats Sofia, neon blue lit Sauced and two fancy candlelit places that I don't know the name of. What sets it apart from the others is that it's a groupon and dimmi regular, making it more affordable than expected. Located next to Grill'd and opposite Camberwell Station if you visit in the evening park at the station.
I Love Food
Dined here on Friday night. Had a special deal from dimmi booking site – 50% off food bill. We decided to enjoy a bunch of the small share plates. We had the beef meatballs, garlic prawns, chicken skewers and lamb ribs. Felt like we waited a long time to get our food. Food arrived all together which we were surprised by, thought when ordering a bunch of share plates they would bring out 2 first then another 2. All the food was tasty but the temperature of the food was not that hot, either because it was waiting in the kitchen for the rest of our plates to be cooked or because it was served on cold plates. In addition, because all the food came out at once, it did not fit on the table for 2 we were sitting on, we had to move to a larger table to accommodate all the food. This aside we still enjoyed all the small plates we ordered. For dessert we both got the chocolate fondant. Again we enjoyed this, was gooey and chocolatey but the temperature wasn’t that warm/hot. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. Overall we had a good night out, the food was enjoyable and with 50% off our food bill it was a great value deal.

While this place sits mostly empty on a weekday lunch... Sofia's just down the road has a packed house. On entering, I wasn't too sure why... decor is in line with a fine dining establishment... all dark and moody. Service is friendly and efficient. Unfortunately, the meals are quite basic especially for the prices. Schnitzel is fine... chips are very similar to what you'd find at McDonalds... and surprisingly it is served WITHOUT salad. Not worth $20. Also agree... everything is very salty/sweet. Overall, a slight adjustment in the meals and this place will do well!

This restaurant was just wonderful. The owner was extremely friendly and spent lots of time chatting to us. All our food was really good, and my absolute favourite was the home mad gnocchi with Gorgonzola. Will definitely be back, such good food!

Family of 4 on a voucher deal, Saturday dinner. Food was good, we had lamb skewers, calamari, prawn for Entrée. Mains took a while to serve, but to be fair, the restaurant was absolutely packed. The pasta (Marinara, Fettucini Carbonara) was fabulous! The wait staff were patient and friendly, and the Manager, outstanding, made us feel welcome. Overall a happy experience.
Rachael
Came here on a Groupon, the restaurant prices would have been extremely disproportionate if not. Antipasto board was very nice and varied, good balance of flavour and nicely presented. Mains were disappointing, the major issue being the gravy poured on the steak, a shame given how salty the offering was. Marinara was not special or interesting. Wasn't a massive fan of the unbalanced dessert, too much liquor to icecream, please don't present this in a cocktail glass.
Coco
The food at Borolo is simply delicious. We had the antipasto for entree, duck fat rustic potato for sides, beef ragu and spaghetti for mains and the lemon tart for dessert. My partner says the ragu is the best he ever had! I was very happy with my pasta too. Fresh seafood was used and the amount of seafood was generous too despite is using the Cudo voucher for dining there. The duck fat rustic potato was crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside! I'm not usually someone who like lemon tart, but this one's different. The custard was creamy and not too tangy for my liking. The tart case was crunchy.

The staff were very friendly and attentive, giving recommendations what to order and always have a smile on their face.

Ambience was only so so however the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff made up for it. Would definitely go back again.
KH
Typical Italian restaurant, bit finer than your next door sofias. And of course, pricier. But with the livingsocial voucher, is worth every penny. So remember to buy that! Ordered a shared entree which is not bad, worth to try! The beef ragu was quite salty but beef was perfect. The pasta marinara was ok, nothing stand out, just your ordinary marinara. The dessert I had was chocolate fondant and lemon tart. Quite good overall. But with a voucher is all worth for an evening! Otherwise pretty pricey for what you get as dishes are quite small for Italian restaurants at this price.

Great food and very friendly customer service :) I had an almond mylk cappuccino and porridge w apple compote, almonds :) Great atmosphere and good light breakfast options.

A surprise discovery last night and we will be back. Barolo has only been open at this site for a few months but they know how to run an eatery: excellent and attentive service, friendly staff, delicious food. The only this is that it's a modern fitout which made it very noisy. Our calamari, and garlic prawn entres were excellent, the pastas and risotto mains very good. If you see the pork belly on the menu, grab it; it's the best we've tasted. I wish it was on the permanent menu now. Desserts good as well and the coffee smelled delish. Definitely worth a visit or six.

Thanks for Checking

Barolo's decor is almost cafe-like but comfortable enough.

The food was similar: the dishes lacked invention but were a cut above pub fare and overall, delicious.

The one stand out here was the service - after twenty minutes of non-stop story-telling, I hadn't touched my food and the waitress (bless her soul) worriedly enquired if there was something wrong with the dish. No, no, I was just too busy catching my friends up with my news but so nice that you asked.

That kind of observation is part of good hospitality training (check back on your customer after meals are delivered) but rarely happens. And, if it does, it often comes across as perfunctory. But not this time. I believed this waitress actually cared. So, soon after, I shut up and ate. :) And yes, my meal was delicious.

P.S. Great to see bread and butter pudding on a dessert menu!
Josephine
Let me start off by saying the staff at Barolo are so friendly & engaging. They made sure everything was up to scratch & made the night much more enjoyable. Thoroughly enjoyed the meals. Slightly disappointed that they didn't have the mussels dish on the menu no more. However, the waiter was nice enough to ask the kitchen to prepare us a similar dish with a mixture of mussels, calamari, prawns & clams with the same sauce they used with their mussel dish. The sauce is AMAZING! Cannot fault it. Lamb skewers were slightly over cooked but still edible. For main we ordered the beef ragu (high recommend it), confit duck leg & spaghetti marinara (huge portion!). Definetly will be back to try the other dishes & highly recommend it to anyone in the area.

UPDATE 28/07/2017
Finally for Dinner .... 3.5/5
Food wise;
$18.50, pricey but a great Calamari starter 8/10
MAINS
$24.00 Fettuccini Mushroom is just right, maybe just a little lacking in sauce to my liking. 7/10
$29.00 Spaghetti Marinara in Napoli sauce, pasta is not al dente, a bit overcooked and over-rinsed .... it has lost all that flour "stickiness". 6.5/10
DESSERT
$12.00 Nutella Pizza, not enough Nutella and the Pizza is just not right 5/10.
$15.00 Chocolate Fondant, that's a RE-ORDER item 9/10.

Stick with Dinner in my opinion, and possibly lunch.

PREVIOUS - Breakfast 3/5
$2 Latte, is that possible? Try their Chai Latte .....

I can understand coffee at $2, promo period, etc. and in this case their latte is above average for what they are charging, but a $2 Chai Latte is extremely exceptional and it's very good too.

Another NKOTB on Burke Rd, great location, free 2hr parking on the side, a tad dark, pleasant ambiance set up more for Dinner.
Very limited Menu for Breakfast, they are more a Dinner venue, which we will get to soon.

Breakfast Menu was limited, simple and easy, quite delicious; our Salmon and Smashed Avocado were served on one of the best breads/toasts that we've ever had, crunchy crust and easy to cut.
Good and pleasant service, thank you. JT-13/07/2017.

Nice little restaurant on Burke Rd , very friendly and attentive wait staff / host. Large portion sizes on the pasta dishes ...and a good selection of liqueurs to add to the dessert of choice ...The Affogatto.

Visited Barolo a couple of weeks ago and the food was absolutely delicious. Everything was cooked to perfection, with generous serves and warm staff. the desserts were absolutely divine highly recommend the chocolate fondant - would definitely go back there and recommend to friends and family for good honest tasty Italian fare! Lovely evening all round!

A late lunch of the tuna spaghetti in a deserted Barolo, my first visit. The pasta was delicious, hot, freshly cooked and an ample portion. Couldn't fault it. Would recommend for lunch and dinner. But a breakfast menu which lacks eggs is a concern, so won't be adding it to my early morning list!
Katie
A friend and I had dinner here a few nights ago and really enjoyed our experience; We were well looked after by the kind attentive Staff. The food was delicious we shared a few of the smaller meals from the share menu, the Calamari and Lamb skewers was so perfectly cooked very much recommend them.

I have visited for lunch and had a tuna pasta off the specials which was amazing, a few weeks later took the family there for mum's birthday and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their mains, drinks and dessert! The staff and food both exceptional. A must visit :)

Had a quick lunch here Wednesday, friendly staff, Lunch special BLT baguette was excellent value for money along with the $2 coffee! Cheapest coffee on Burke rd and quite possibly the best.

I follow Barolo on instagram and I came in especially for a salted caramel and chocolate martini, when i got there I found out that it was there cocktail of the week a couple weeks ago. The waitress was lovely and said that they could still make it for me. Food was delicious and the staff were great. I have booked in my birthday dinner for in 2 weeks.
