Review Blue Galangal - Camberwell

Christoph Stangenberg
Nice neighbourhood Thai with a personal service, decent quality food at reasonable prices. It's a small place that may fill up on the weekend, so book ahead for larger groups.

Fabulous original Thai flavours from a small family run restaurant. Love the Cheu Chee(fish curry) and Massaman Beef curry with garlic rice.

Blue Galangal more genuine and deliciously spicy Thai food. My favourite Thai restaurant in the Burwood area after trying them all

Delicious food, and a more interesting menu than standard. Service was friendly and prompt, and the prices are very reasonable. Altogether excellent!

This shop was close permanetly on 2017. So much thank you and very very highest appreciated to all customers who support my restaurant during 2011 till 2017.

Amazingly cheap. Better quality than 90% of the Thai places in Victoria that seem to charge a third more for a main meal.

Magic. I have traveled Thailand more than 10 times and this food is amazing

We came across this place by chance and it turned out to be quite nice! The place actually has a Southeast Asian feel to it, with simple and authentic decor. Perfect for a quiet, cozy meal.
We ordered the Goong Obb and Phat Thai, both of which were served in a short span of time and together. The preparations were simple but rich in flavour. The Phat Thai had generous amount of peanuts and chicken with minimum oil. The Goong Obb was wonderful with perfectly seasoned prawns. Because our dessert of choice wasn’t available, we settled for the chef’s recommendation of Black Sticky rice with Coconut Ice cream. The ice cream seemed fresh and the flavour was mild but pretty good. If you’re looking for aesthetically beautiful dishes or instaworthy presentations, this is perhaps not the place. Food is definitely worth a shot.

Great local spot. Went here for take away. Curries were sooo delicious especially the massaman; however, the serves were small. Pad Thai was tasty too. Would return in a flash and customer service was lovely.

It's a lovely restaurant after all. We ordered the Rice Net Spring Rolls, Satay Chicken, Chu-Chee (fish curry) with rice, Beef Pad Thai and Black Sticky Rice with Coconut Milk for dessert. The Rice Net Spring Rolls and Satay Chicken are the must-eats. They were both very flavoursome. The staff recommended the Chu-Chee (fish curry) and it was very delicious. I'm not a fish person normally and this fish curry was a pleasant surprise. Pad Thai was very wet which was a bit unusual. It tasted like they went overboard with fish sauce. The Black Sticky Rice was the perfect dessert to end the night. The restaurant was decorated like a local eatery in Thailand with the rusty tables, chairs and beautiful pictures of Thailand.

Decent Thai food with a wide selection of authentic dishes and drinks at affordable prices. We liked the Hoi jor entree , Chu chee fish curry and coconut ice cream. Phad Thai was a tad too salty otherwise good service and dining experience.

Thai street food ... one cheery Owner Chef, what more do you need.

Very brightly set up; food poster, a bit about the chef special, a bit of vintage stuff, old cooking paraphernalia to complement this hip-ceiling interior. Small but effective open kitchen, lingering Thai aroma, to complement its name; Blue Galangal.

I ordered Pad Thai Prawns #12.90 to dine in and Pad Thai Chicken $10.90 for take-away; apart from the lack of prawns, only four small shrimps, both are enjoyable, just a bit thick/heavy with the sauce, overpowering that light lime/acidic flavour.

For what it is, it's okay, good average enjoyable food for lunch.

So not worth!! I ordered tom yum soup n some pineapple fried rice for take away .
The soup was so freaking salty that it hurts your throat.
Rice was burnt and dry n hard . When I called them back about the food all they said come back and take your money back . FYI I don't want the money and not interested driving all the way there . I would have appreciated if they had offered another fresh serve of food. Such a waste !

I came here about 1 month ago and was so impressed i have been back every week. The spices and flavours and beautifully authentic. If you like hot food then Blue Galangal will impress. The staff are exceptional and a nice family feel. It makes me feel like im back in Thailand.

Quaint, uniquely decorated Thai restaurant. Although promising menu options, the food itself was pretty ordinary and small in serving size. Good for those wanting Thai who are in the area, but probably not worth traveling too far for it

Food was very disappointing, the Thai green curry was very mediocre and the seafood stir fry really lacked that authentic Thai flavour. Far better Thai places in this area. The roti was supposed to come with peanut sauce, which was also disappointing as it tastes nothing like peanut sauce. Wouldn't recommend this one if you're after authentic Thai, far better Thai places in this area.

We dined in and ordered the phat Thai chicken, vegetarian spring rolls, prawn spring rolls and massaman beef curry. The phat Thai was gluggy and perhaps my least favourite - it appeared to be drowning in sauce!! Massaman curry was good but could've done with a little bit more flavour. The Spring rolls were average. Service was very quick but they forgot our jasmine tea and the curry and noodles came before the entrés. The chef was yelling at the staff and we were privy to this for most of the evening. It was uncomfortable and loud. Will not go back to Blue Galangal.

Love the authentic flavours of the stirfrys at blue galangal. This is our go to local Thai cuisine takeaway. Such punchy flavours at great prices.

We visited this place because of its great reviews and were not dissapointed. The restraunt is small and unassuming but delivered amazing authentic dishes with rich, fragrent flavours. Friendly staff and very reasonable prices. We'll be back for more.

High ratings on Zomato, but I am absolutely disappointed of their quality of food. Curry lacked in sweetness and wasn't spicy. The plain jasmine rice was very dry. The seafood fried rice only had 2 prawns and 2 pieces of fish flake, 3 beans and one small mushroom. Pad Thai noodles were ok, although there were some noodle pieces that wasn't fully cooked. Food presentation was scrappy and did not closely resemble to what was presented on their menu. Cheap eat but definitely not worth it.

We had a really lovely meal at this smallish dine in restaurant, which also does a lot of takeaway. The prices are extremely reasonable, given the size of the serves. They are Thai-typical smallish (without the added lettuce leaves to make it look bigger) however they are alot cheaper than other venues ($6.90 for Thai beef salad). We started with the Tom Yum (very delicious) and the Poh Tak (which was a refreshing lemony suprise). Then the laab gai, mussels and a spicy chicken stir fry. All were requested Thai Hot. The spice level initially surprised me (haven't had spice for awhile), but it wasn't so over the top that you couldn't taste the food. With all of this between 2, we had to take a whole main home with us. Service was lovely, and always checking if the heat was ok (offers of more chilli if needed). I suggest if you want to dine in, to book on a weekend (there is limited seating space). And say G'day to Moe, the young son of the chef/owner who genuinely cares about his customers.

Went here with friends for dinner and had a great experience. Authentic, tasty Thai food with really good service also. Great little local restaurant we will be sure to return to

Had dinner there with my partner on a weekday night. We really enjoyed the tasty authentic Thai food there and friendly service. Will definitely visit again and try the dessert too ;)

Went there for my dinner with my girlfriend. Didn't expect much but their new lamb dish was very tasty. I normally don't eat lamb because I don't like the smell but I was so surprised that there was no smell at all. I will definitely go back again

Didn't enjoy. Went once and won't go back. As we walked in the door a man (chef? owner?) yelled out "Eat in or take away?" without even greeting us. He could have asked much more politely. The younger man who served us was lovely, but unfortunately this couldn't make up for the poor food. We had spring rolls and chicken puffs for entree, which were fine. However, the mains were not. The phat kee mao had undercooked noodles and very little flavour other than 'spicy'. The stir fried meal had a nice enough sauce (something with tamarind) but the beef was very poor quality and chewy, and there were huge tough chunks of celery stalk in it. Spend the same amount and go to Paradai Thai in Carnegie instead. Worth the trip!

I wouldn't recommend it! T.... I wouldn't recommend it!
The food tastes so authentic and it is so yummy. It is my secret place I go frequently for my Thai food fix. So please don't go ^_^
Vesna.zegarac
The worst Thai ever. I ordered the Phat Thai which consisted of a heap of noodles, one mushroom, one brocolli and two celery pieces. It was completely tasteless as there was no sauce on the noodles. The meal was disgusting.

Simple, tasty, value for money Thai food

AMAZING! Favorite thai food place in melbourne. This place has been our favorite place for many years now, and nothing has come close. Not only are the owners the most polite and friendly people i've seen in my restaurant experiences, but the food is beautifully presented & the flavors are spot on! Anyone who has given this place a thumbs down is insane. Some people have commented that portions are small, its thai 'street' food, thats why it is so cheap, its suppose to be small, this isn't a american restaurant where quantity wins over quality. Perfect place to go and share a few different dishes. And have a big cheap amazing thai feast! Highly recommend! Dont forget to get a green tea with cocnut icecream drink! YUMM

Worst lunch ever. The portions are tiny. Food is flavorless. Wouldn't recommend.

Tasty and wonderful service!. We celebrated a birthday there and the staff were extremely accommodating and friendly, serving us wonderful food. I left very very full! The food was very fresh, and spot on with signature Thai flavours. I highly recommend Blue Galangal, Thank you!

Our Favorite!. This restaurant was recommended to us by friends 2 years ago. We have been dining here on a regular basis since then. The owner & staff are lovely people, & the food is beautiful. If you want somewhere posh it's not for you, but we think it's cute, the food is great & the prices allow us to dine out more often.

Fantastic authentic good value grub. Service ..... Don't expect too much but food more than makes up for

A fantastic little taste of Thailand. One of the few restaurants that specialise in traditional hawker style grills and salads which are as good as any I've had in Thailand. I Highly recommend these lovely people.
George
Bland!. Thai salad was nice, however the phat thai and tom kha were very bland and lacking in all the typical delicious thai flavours, including galangal!I

Lovely food and consistently warm service. Well with a visit.

This owner/chef has nailed the formula for a local Thai place. Tasty, authentic, street-style fare, great value and friendly service.

Impressed with taste & service. Last night we had a group of 15 people dine at Blue Galangal to celebrate a 60th. We were all impressed with the friendly and helpful staff, the tastiness of all food and the value was great.. $277 total for 15 people including entrees and mains. Very happy with the team there.

Waste of money and time. All the food ordered appears to have come out a microwave.
Dry and rubber like appearance and taste, I could make much
better at home myself. Went I said something the chef became
hostile amd argued.
No point trying this with the rude attitude and rubbish food....
Jackie Curtis
A bit disappointed.. The food wasn't as tasty as it could have been, pretty average.

Beautiful Thai food that i ever had. We went to this restaurant for dinner with my family for the first times.Waitress did the good job and advice all the food for us.Start with homemade Prawn cake and fish cake then grilled chicken. After the first bite,we were so delight and happy that we made the right decision to try this restaurant food. Then we order curry and 2 stir fried noodle. It was so yummy! We can't finish all food so i asked for take away food by no extra charges as some Thai restaurant,The owner came to say thank you.I can't wait to come back again. It was so delicious!Thank you to make ours enjoy this dinner.

Bloody awful.......dont waste your money. Just had a takeaway dinner from Blue Galangal. It was disgusting. Food was cold. Spring rolls tasted foul. The fried rice was dry and tasteless. An absolute disgrace, cant believe we paid actual money for this.
Yu
Authentic Thai food. The prawn salad we had was fragrant with lots of herbs, stir fried had plenty of vegetables and curry was authentic and good balance of spice and not too sweet which suit our taste.
Happy to have a great Thai restaurant in the neighborhood.

Just had a great meal. Delicious spicy baby octopus and amazing seafood with homemade sweet, spicy sauce. Attentive service. So good to have a good local Thai.

I liked the place until I could see them cooking food in the microwave and then it going straight on a plate and out to us! Sometimes it's nice looking into a kitchen but not this time. The food is good but it put me off.

Great value. Been there about half a dozen times and the food has always been very good - especially like the stir fries and entree selection. Friendly atmosphere, simple, tasteful decor and the kitchen, which is directly behind the cashier counter, looks really clean and well organised.

Great addition to the toorak rd/warrigal rd shops, welcoming staff, great food, cheap just make sure you ask them to hold the chilli some of the dishes are extremely hot!

This place is great! I live close so i come here all the time. The staff are very friendly and the food is great (can be too hot for some i love it though) very authentic thai food and coconut ice cream to cool you down after!! Overall a great little place :).

Blue Galangal. Hi sorry Lady L. I kind of disagreed with you. I live locally, seen this restaurant from the start, chat with them. So have anyone tried any restaurant that do everthing from the scratch, they make curries paste themselve, not from containers (like you can get from the groceries). Using fresh chillies kind of high cost, so when compare the cost and the taste how difference between those two, you should know. The portion, I may agree with you if you paid $ 14 or $15 for a dish and not a Thai food. $ 9.90 I guessed you paid. Anyhow, have anyone tried Nua Dadd Deaw, only $4.90 so yummy and worth more than $4.90 or Nua Yang for only$ 3.50 with traditional Thai dipping sauce. Lady L. or any of you guys, should not miss out of this opportunity:) From Life is so beautiful.

Tasty but not value for money. My parents and I decided to have an easy Sunday night dinner so we got take away from Blue Galangal. We had been eager to try it since it opened up. We ordered a curry and a stir fry dish. They were delish I can admit that but we were so disappointed with the portions! The curry was literally beef and a curry sauce (no vegies or anything) and was in one of those small round containers. The stir fry was also a portion of a meal for one person. This would have been fine if only it wasn't almost $20 for the two of those dishes. Disappointing :(

This place is great! Just what toorak rd needed. The staff are so lovely, the chef came down and told us about fruits in Thailand and they make a fantastic phat tai, so yummy and so so cheap. Definitely worth a visit.

Thai - Simply Thai - You must try!. This restaurant / take away venue opened three weeks ago. We watched in anticipation as the Blue Galangal Thai food signage went up. We have not been dissappointed. We have tried a few of their entrees, salads and mains so far and although we have some absolute favourites, nothing has been dissappointing. A simple concrete floor with simple tables and eclectic collection of mismatched chairs greets you. May works the register, takes your orders and serves you whilst Ming works in the kitchen. The kitchen is in full view and hides nothing from the discerning diner.

For entree you must try Por Pia Puk. Hresh Vegetables wrapped in spring roll pastry. Beautiful and fresh ingredients.

An absolute killer is the Yum Nua. Grilled beef salad with fresh chili, lemon juice and fresh herbs.

Mains we have sampled include; Yellow curry chicken, Phat Thai and Phat Se-Ewe.

We have eaten in three times and taken away once. Prices are very reasonable and the freshness and quality of meat cuts are simply much better than expected.

We have been pretty amazed at the quality of the food here. We love Thai, Malay and other asian foods. If anyone can recommend something amazing for us to try please do.

As for Blue Galangal. I really recommend that you go see May and Ming and give it a try. We cannot see how you will be dissappointed.
